Drag Queens? Check. Over the top musical numbers? Check. A stellar cast of characters? Check. Welcome to La Cage Aux Folles. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents a National tour like no other! Featuring the incredible and uncomperable George Hamilton (Zorro the Gay Blade, Love at First Bite) as Georges, owner of the most sensational live theater house in all the French riviera! The love of his life Albin aka ZAZA played by the scene stealing and incredibly voiced Christopher Sieber ( Spamalot, Chicago). Together they become a magical duo who live life larger than anyone could ever imagine. Enter their son Jean Michel played by Michael Lowney (Les Miserables, Oklahoma) with a wrench to their glitter and ostrich feathered operation.

Meet the soon to be in-laws; M. Dindon played by Bernard Burak Sheredy (The Woodsman, Waiting for Lefty) the head of the TFMP (Tradition, Family and Morality Party) and Mme. Dindon played by Cathy Newman (South Pacific, My Fair Lad) his meek wife as well as the blushing bride Anne played by Allison Blair McDowell (La Cage! Is Miss McDowell’s debut show).

This cast is a miracle to behold, the dance numbers astound, the beautiful “Cagelles” are a sheer bevvy of beauty, grace, and masculinity! The individual characters played by the Chorus give this show its meat and makes it truly an incredible show.

My only critique… Michael Lowney seems a bit green for the roll of Jean Michelle especially paired with the likes of George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber. He seemed cautious in his role and only truly blossomed in his musical numbers. Perhaps it was nerves as well since he seemed to open up after the first few scenes. I sincerely hope with time he will have the opportunity to develop more roles and continue to grow.

And now a bit from the heart… Being the type who beats her own drum and cartwheels down her own path I truly understand the difficulties that come when you just don’t seem to fit into society. But instead of trying to fit in you find that if you create your own special place, peace and serenity follows. Being in love with a man who was also raised by a gay father and who is incredible in every way possible as well as sincere and sensitive to being outside the “norm” our match was made in heaven. Its when you realize that who you are is OK, that it makes you happy and that love surrounds you always you find that you’ve actually fit in all along.

If you love cancan, drag queens (as much as I do), incredible talent, and the most spectacularly, sparkling show you have ever witnessed run and see La Cage this week at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts! You will not be sorry!

Now performing through August 5.
