“Thought we were in trouble there for a second”

After several months of waiting, undying curiosity, and anticipation, Star Wars fans can rejoice as Solo: A Star Wars Story finally releases a full length teaser trailer. The trailer itself was teased in a short TV spot during the Super Bowl coverage last night.

Narrated by the smuggler himself, we are given the first puzzle pieces to the soon to be canonical origin story of one of the saga’s most beloved characters. Han has been causing trouble since he was 10 years old, was kicked out of the Imperial Academy, and is just as cocky as when we meet him in A New Hope.

We also get an up close look at Donald Glover’s Lando, stylish as ever. Social media has already been blowing up about his coat and fresh looks. New characters also find their way into the mix with Emilia Clarke as Qi’Ra and a first glimpse at Woody Harrelson.

Harrelson, who plays Tobias Beckett, offers Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) a chance to team up on a daring adventure that allows him to test his will and skills to the limit.

The Falcon is fresh, new, and both familiar and drastically different than the scrap metal we meet in A New Hope. That new car smell is definitely going to linger, but how long into the film before that first dent and scorch mark finds its way onto the hull?

In short, the trailer is exciting and gives us all some fresh and very well needed optimism for Solo. So close to the release date, it was hard to determine whether or not we would actually get a substantial preview prior to rushing off to the big screen debut in May.

The real question the trailer brings is, what will this story teach us about Han? What details, characters, and scenarios are going to unfold that are going to share something unexpected?

This project has been under lock and key for the majority of the film’s time in production. Given the directorial changes, reshoots, and lack of previous marketing, Lucasfilm has found themselves in a tricky situation and it’s no mystery that we haven’t had any real details until now because of those challenges. The story concept alone, though intriguing, has created some hesitation from fans and the media alike. The reason for the hesitation comes directly from the source of the story, Han Solo himself.

For the most part, Solo’s character has been taken at face value. He’s a charming anti-hero with witty one liners, a quick trigger finger, and a habit of running into danger. Though his cinematic backstory was never explained in any of the previous films, fans and even Harrison Ford felt that we already have a pretty good understanding of the character.

The new film’s challenge is breaking beyond those preconceived notions and bring us a fresh appreciation of Solo. Now that we have two teasers and new promotional stills, we have a lot to get excited about, discuss, and debate on.
