Paradise at Bahia Resort Hotel on San Diego’s Mission Bay

Paradise

To some, paradise is a memorable dinner overlooking a moonlit bay. To others it is lounging with your toes in the sand or listening to boats bob in the water from a luxurious suite. To me it’s all of the above, and more, which is why I love Bahia Resort Hotel (www.bahiahotel.com) on San Diego’s majestic Mission Bay.

Set on a 14-acre peninsula in Mission Bay, Bahia Resort is a slice of heaven with a sandy beach, winding paths through lush tropical gardens, a gourmet restaurant, a sparkling pool area, a giant Mississippi River-styled paddlewheel boat, water activities, and lots of fun and games for the whole family.

Bahia Resort is a paradise on San Diego’s Mission Bay

The family and I recently snuck away to Bahia Resort for three days of fun and relaxation in the San Diego sun.

The resort sits on its own private beach

Our getaway began when we checked into a luxurious suite, located steps from the water. Covering more than 600 sq-ft, the room came with a separate bedroom with a large king bed. It also boasted a kitchenette area with a breakfast bar, sink, microwave, and mini refrigerator, a living room area with sleeper sofa, office desk, comfortable lounge chair and lots of storage space.

pic
Bay suites are steps from the sand and the water

The best feature in the suite was the patio, where a table and chairs overlooked gorgeous Mission Bay. From here we had memorable views of the bay and the colorful boats docked about 50 yards from our room. We also had a front row seat to the Bahia Belle, the hotel’s iconic paddle wheel ship.

pic
Resort suites are spacious and luxurious

When not enjoying our room, we strolled along the hotel’s sandy beach, lounged by the pool, or enjoyed resort activities. One of the funnest things we did was rent a surrey bike and pedal around Mission Bay on a well kept walking/biking path. The two-hour journey followed the sand past beautiful, waterfront homes, boats, kayakers, paddle boarders and more.

pic
A bike / walking path allows guest to explore the bay

Along the way we passed a little house where people can adopt a puppy, and rode the bike to a park, where the kids played and we rested our legs. We then pedaled to Catamaran Resort, a sister property of Bahia Resort also set on Mission Bay. Here we bought a smoothie and sat on the sand.

Back at Bahia, we prepared for dinner at Dockside 1953, the resort’s signature restaurant. Situated steps from the beach and marina, the nautical-inspired restaurant spoils guests with a spacious outdoor patio featuring cozy fire pits, a covered trellis, and stunning unobstructed views of Mission Bay and the Bahia Belle, the hotel’s Mississippi River-styled paddle wheel boat.

Our dinner at Dockside 1953 began on the patio, overlooking the bay and an old speed boat sitting in the sand as decoration. Seated next to a firepit, we started with fresh and delicious West Coast oysters, with apple mignonette, cocktail sauce and horseradish; and coconut snapper ceviche, with local Pacific snapper, coconut, ginger red onion, cilantro, lime juice, and plantain chips.

pic
Dockside 1953 offers great food in a fabulous, intimate location

For the main course we enjoyed seared Skuna Bay salmon, with lemon risotto, grilled asparagus, and chive caviar beurre blanc; and a hangar steak, with mashed potatoes, charred broccoli rabe, caramelized shallot, maitre de butter, red wine demi glaze. The kids had a burger and chicken nuggets.

The next morning we walked across the parking lot and rented a beautiful, 20-ft Hurricane power boat from Action Sport Rentals (www.actionsportrentals.com/bahia-resort/), which partners with Bahia Resort. The company is a one-stop shop for boat, sailboat, kayak rentals, and more.

pic
Renting a boat while at Bahia resort is memorable family adventure

Our voyage started with a short safety video and learning how to work the boat controls, which are surprisingly easy. We then hopped in and cruised into the morning sun to explore Mission Bay.

Spanning more than 4,000 acres, Mission Bay is an artificial, saltwater bay that is part of the recreational Mission Bay Park, the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States. It was created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding, and sunbathing

pic

During the trip, we cruised past waterfront condos and houses and past other boaters and paddle boarders and went under a big bridge. We also sailed by Catamaran Resort, where we rented a similar boat last summer. The vessel handled very well and had lots of room and shade for the family to enjoy the ride.

After the cruise, we discovered another fun thing to do. Across the street from Bahia Resort we found Belmont Park (https://www.belmontpark.com/), an historic 100-year-old, oceanfront amusement park. Featuring an old fashioned wooden rollercoaster and numerous thrilling rides and attractions, the park is fun for the whole family.

pic
100-year-old Belmont Park is a thrilling waterfront Amusement Park

One of my favorites rides at Belmont Park is the landmark Giant Dipper roller, a coaster that zips and turns up and down at speeds up to 48 miles per hour. Other things to do at the park include a carousel, mini-golf, rock climbing, an intense obstacle course for kids, a huge indoor pool, and Shipwreck Cove, a 30-foot interactive tower ride where guests pull themselves up using a rope attached to the gondola before experiencing a thrilling drop and rotating 360 degrees for a full park perspective.

Back at Bahia Resort, we swam in the pool and soaked in the Jacuzzi.

pic
The resort pool area is fun for entire family

The next morning as fog hovered over the bay, we were back at Dockside 1953 for a great breakfast. I had delicious plate of carne asade chilaquiles, with crunchy corn tortillas, beans, cheese, cilantro salsa, pickled onions, over easy eggs and topped with avocado slices; The wife had the American Breakfast, with eggs, smoked apple bacon, breakfast potatoes, and toast. The kids devoured buttermilk pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries.

After breakfast we strolled around Mission Bay and relaxed in lounge chairs on Bahia’s private beach. With our toes in the sand, we discussed plans for a return visit to this wonderful resort hotel.

Movie Review: Disney’s Lilo & Stitch

Disney

The latest line of Disney live-action adaptations from their animated originals makes a big splash on the big screen. “Lilo & Stitch” keeps the heart, humor, and cuteness of the original while contributing its own enhancements to the live-action real world sensibilities. In contrast to the majority of previous efforts, the contemporary story is a change of pace from naturalist or fantastical settings.

The story is timeless in its story and characters. The movie is suitable and accessible for both long time fans and those unfamiliar with the 2002 original. Dean Fleischer Camp takes over directing duties from original director and voice of Stitch, Chris Sanders. Written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes.

Lilo (Maia Kealoha) is the fiery adolescent who has trouble fitting in the social norms of her Hawaiian community. Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) sets aside her personal goals whilst strugging to balance life between keeping a job and raising her younger sister, Lilo, following the passing of their parents.

LILO & STITCH

It’s no easy task becoming a guardian to your younger sister. The translation of their story from animation to live-action is fitting and prominent as their situation will naturally connect with the audience. Sisterhood, motherhood, family; it’s all here front and center.

Lilo and Nani’s world turns upside down when alien escapee Experiment 626 (Chris Sanders) takes the role of the new family dog. Outside forces in pursuit of the furry blue alien are no match from the real heart of the story: Lilo and Nani’s relationship surfing the unwavering rough waves of grief, sorrow, and togetherness.

The emotional cores of the original film are amplified. Other aspects get a tweak to reflect the real world setting to set apart from the animated version. It all mostly comes together in the best way. Even purists of the original animation would be hard pressed to deny the enjoyment and fun this update offers.

LILO & STITCH

Maia Kealoha is adorable and convincing for such a young child actor. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani confidently stepped up to and completely encompasses the role of sentimental caregiver. Many elements of the original story beats, characters, and motivations are present in this latest Disney remake. But some of those same elements come off as honorable mentions as they inexplicably get either dropped, forgotten, or possibly addressed in a potential sequel. Leaving story arcs from questionably open ended to was that necessary or could that have been told differently? Also, some tension in scenes displayed superior pacing from its predecessor. Oh well, moving right along…

“Lilo & Stitch” is the coolest family movie this summer. Opens in theaters May 23, 2025.

Disney Legend Martha Blanding to Address Cal State Fullerton’s Class of 2025

Disney

Disney Legend, author and Cal State Fullerton alumna Martha Blanding will speak at a CSUF commencement ceremony for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on May 21 at Titan Stadium. She will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree recognizing her groundbreaking achievements during the 8 a.m. ceremony, which is one of 12 ceremonies taking place throughout the week.

As a cast member and later as a senior manager of merchandise special events, Blanding spent five decades with Disneyland Resort, accumulating an impressive amount of “firsts” from 1971 through 2022. Blanding was Disneyland’s first Black full-time tour guide and VIP hostess, first Black employee to retire with 50 years of service at The Walt Disney Co., and, in 2024, the first Black Disney Parks employee to be designated an official Disney Legend by The Walt Disney Co.

Blanding recently released her best-selling memoir, “Groundbreaking Magic: A Black Woman’s Journey Through the Happiest Place on Earth.” Cowritten with Disneyland Resort and CSUF alumnus Tim O’Day, the book shares Blanding’s success story and unique journey showcasing personal resilience through five decades of cultural transformation at The Walt Disney Co.

Martha Blanding August BlogPost

“Martha Blanding is a trailblazer who has broken barriers and built bridges throughout her distinguished career,” said CSUF President Ronald S. Rochon. “From a tour guide to an executive leader at Disney, Martha’s journey is a powerful story of perseverance, brilliance and bold ambition. Her career and leadership exemplify the very best of our Titan spirit and values.”

Blanding grew up in South Central Los Angeles with three siblings and graduated from John C. Fremont High School. She was a CSUF student when she began her role as Disneyland’s first Black full-time tour guide in 1971. Within a year, she earned a role as a VIP hostess, hosting such celebrities as Diana Ross, Elton John, Cher, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and Bob Hope. Blanding was also the designated hostess for U.S. government officials and international delegates.

By 1975, Blanding became the first Black woman to work in management at Disneyland. She started as an associate buyer and later became the first Black female merchandise buyer for Disneyland and all Disney Parks. Blanding progressed to become the senior manager of Disneyland’s merchandise special events, where she produced events with notable figures Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones, Kurt Russell, Annette Funicello and Walt Disney Imagineers and animators.

In the early 1990s, Martha helped produce the official Disneyana Convention, a predecessor of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. She co-founded PULSE, a business employee resource group for Black Disneyland cast members, at a time when many companies lacked official diversity groups.

Martha Blanding August BlogPost

“I’m incredibly humbled and so very proud of this honor from my alma mater, Cal State Fullerton,” Blanding said. “In addition to so many fond memories of my days living in the CSUF dorms and taking classes that served me well in my professional life, it’s also where my Disney career was launched when Disneyland was on campus to recruit students to be cast members. It’s hard for me to convey how much this honor means to me, and I’m grateful for this opportunity to return to CSUF on such a special occasion for me and all the graduates.”

CSUF’s commencement ceremonies take place May 19-22 at the university’s Titan Stadium and intramural field.

With its decades-old throwback sensibilities, Mel’s Diner idyllically captures the essence of Back to the Future, serving up such menu options as the Flux Capacitor Patty Melt, Time Machine Pastrami Melt, Doc Brown’s Chicken Pot Pie, Outatime Cookie, Time Traveler’s Milk Shake, Flux Capacitor Mocktail and Wake Up Juice Cocktail.

  • Guests and fans of Universal Pictures’ blockbuster Wicked will have a chance to rejoicify with popular characters, Elphaba and Glinda, when they step out in style to greet guests at the theme park’s existing vibrant Wicked themed photo op, located adjacent to the main entrance.
  • A sculpted dimensional photo op of Toothless from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks’ live action movie How to Train Your Dragon opening in theatres on June 13, will take center stage within Universal Plaza. This lifelike, 730-pound, larger-than-life sculpted dimensional dragon will tower at nearly 6’ in height, measuring 24’ in length and 8’ in width. Surprised guests posing next to Toothless will no doubt be able to imagine themselves soaring with their favorite dragon within the Isle of Berk.

A dedicated food cart within Universal Plaza will serve scrumptious treats that only a dragon could devour, such as Toothless and Light Fury cookies and a Toothless popcorn bucket.

  • As construction continues on Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, Universal Studios Hollywood’s first-ever, high-speed outdoor roller coaster opening in 2026, the theme park will offer guests an exciting sneak peek at one of the ride vehicles for this all-new adventure. The Dodge Charger ride vehicle, designed to look like Dominic Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger, will park within Universal Plaza for guests to enjoy as the theme park races towards the roller coaster’s grand opening next year.

Disneyland Turnstiles Upgraded to New Entry Gates

Disneyland

For so many, it’s a rite of passage to head through the entry gates of Disneyland park for the first time, allowing them to enter a world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy in a truly unforgettable moment that they will always remember.

Yet the next step once passing through those gates is up to them as they enter this ultimate family destination, whether they are looking to board a classic attraction like Haunted Mansion, snack on a legendary Disney treat or pose for a picture in front of an iconic location like Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Whether Southern California locals, visiting from out-of-town or staying at one of the three Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, we know guests can’t wait to enter the parks as quickly as possible.

For guests wondering about the easiest ways to enter The Happiest Place on Earth, we’ve got plenty of answers about the upgrades to the entry gates at the entrances for Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park.

Where Can I Find the Entry Turnstiles at the Resort?

Located at the main entrance to both Disneyland and California Adventure, guests can enter the parks through the esplanade located between both theme parks. They have seen turnstiles located at these entry points over the years but will see modernized new entry gates.

Pro Tip: Select guests with valid theme park admission can also skip the main entrances by entering at three other locations:

Aboard the Disneyland Monorail via Downtown Disney District station: Guests with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disneyland park can travel straight to Tomorrowland on this highway in the sky.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa: Hotel guests at the Disneyland Resort can soon discover Disney California Adventure by entering the park near Grizzly Peak with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disney California Adventure park.

Near Pixar Place Hotel: 30 minutes prior to park opening until 12 p.m. PST, hotel guests at the Disneyland Resort can enter Disney California Adventure by entering the park near Goofy’s Sky School with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disney California Adventure park.

How Do I Use the New Entry Gates at Disneyland?

Once they are ready to start the fun, guests can head over to the entrance gate of your choice. Every gate is ADA compliant, allowing all guests with ECVs, wheelchairs and strollers to use and pass through them with ease!

  • Step 1: To enter each park, guests will scan each ticket using screens present at individual entry gates.
  • Step 2: Once each ticket is scanned, every guest in the group will then use the screen to take their own picture by pressing the camera icon on the screen to capture their photo. And don’t worry about the kids: each entry gate is equipped with camera technology that will automatically adjust to each guest’s height while snapping the photo!
  • Step 3: Once each ticket is scanned and the photo is digitally attached to guests’ tickets, the entry gates will automatically swing open for their party to head into the park together.

What is the Entry Process Like?

Many guests want to kick off their early morning at the resort by quickly scanning their tickets at the entrance gates so they can pick up their food and beverages they mobile ordered from Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe or head toward a popular attraction like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

At each entrance gate, guests will be able to scan their tickets and take their own pictures to attach to their tickets. If they have a multi-day ticket or a Magic Key pass, they will only have to take your picture linked to your ticket one time, making this process smooth for returning guests!

While this new process allows guests to scan their tickets by themselves, a nearby cast member will also be there to help so guests can get to their next ride or make your lunch reservation in time.

What is New About This Entry Experience?

These updates at the entryways to Disneyland and California Adventure aim to improve the arrival experience with even more gates than before.

While a cast member will still be present at the park entrances to validate tickets and photos and welcome guests to the resort, newly accessible gates will open automatically after guests scan their ticket and take a photo, including for guests with ECVs, wheelchairs and strollers.

The updated entry gates will also have an access point to tap guests’ MagicBand+, allowing for easy and hands-free access.

How Does My Toddler Enter the Parks?

All guests under the age of 3 do not need a valid admission ticket or theme park reservation to enter either park, though all guests ages 3 years old and above must have both. Guests over the age of 3 will follow the same process of scanning and capturing a photo when entering, with an adult’s help of course!

Can I Use the Disneyland App or MagicBand+ to Enter?

Once guests purchase their tickets and made theme park reservations, they can open the Disneyland app and select the menu (the three horizontal lines in the bottom right of the navigation bar).

Then, once tapping “My Tickets and Passes” loading tickets to the app by selecting “Link Tickets & Passes,” they will be all set to head toward the entry gates to scan their tickets and enter the park. Guests can use the Disneyland app or tap your MagicBand+ to the access points to enter!

With additional planning tools, exclusive content and park updates including ride wait times and showtimes, the Disneyland app is everyone’s new best friend when visiting the resort over the course of their stay.

Are There Any Disney-Inspired Features?

Each entry gate features animated clips of beloved characters welcoming and eventually bidding farewell to guests upon entering and exiting, with Mickey Mouse at Disneyland and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit at California Adventure!

How Do I Re-Enter the Parks?

Whether trying to catch the dazzling nighttime return of the upcoming “Paint the Night” parade in Disneyland park or looking to take in the sights and sounds of “World of Color Happiness!” in Disney California Adventure park, the process remains the same for all guests when re-entering the parks with a theme park reservation and a valid ticket for the same day. They just scan their admission media and come on in!
