La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts & McCoy Rigby Entertainment presents a newly restored and reimagined production of the beloved, smash-hit, award-winning musical, Come From Away. Based on the remarkable true story of how, unexpectedly, the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world.

What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, we’re diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11, 2001.  Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.

There was, truth be told, some uncertainty of how this show would play out. Having such a significant moment of American history be relived can bring out various levels of sensitivity two decades later. How much focus of the doom and gloom can the audience withstand? Fortunately, “Come From Away” draws its attention to highlight the spirit of generosity and community in the aftermath of a disaster that stopped the world and put the human population on edge. The passengers of the world making a full stop somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Coming from a part of the human condition seeming to be less and less prevalent as time goes by. Regardless of religion, nationality, ethnicity, or language, the deepest fragments of the human soul was able to show itself with the residents of Gander.  Indeed, frustration spreads across the stranded airline passengers. Communication with loved ones amidst fear and doubt. But not all hope is lost. Some connections are made to grow were it not for the world that stopped moving. How people choose to handle and react to their predicament is not respected by all companions. Relations fall and other begin.

While the mini-stories and following up with the progress of characters is enduring throughout, the music is what really brings the light from darkness. Not only is there a live band performing and highlighted in the background, but many of the main players pick up an instrument to join in the unbridled festivities. A masterful and delightful runway of dramatic and musical talent bestows the stage.

Surrounded by a well crafted and dimensional set design of luggage, welcome signs, and sky view, “Come From Away” takes flight and grounds the show to an all new altitude of genuine beauty from tragedy.  Hold your tears as some turbulence to be expected, but prepare for a smooth landing into the heart and soul of the human spirit.

Book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, musical direction by Sam Groisser (Tina, Tootsie), and direction and Choreography by Richard J. Hinds (Company, Disney’s Newsies).
