Queen Mary Dark Harbor makes triumphant return as the Halloween favorite meets and exceeds expectations. The highly anticipated scare event brings back what was beloved, tried, and true bringing all the scares and thrills to new levels of entertainment for old and new fans. Five scare mazes, four carnival rides, dance floor, four hidden speakeasies, roaming scare zone, photo opportunities, and refreshments make Long Beach one of the best Halloween experiences in Southern California. This time, it better stay in its home port and never drift away.
The looming sight of the historical ship in the disquieting background makes for a haunting backdrop. Iconic characters like Ringmaster, Captain, Scary Mary, Graceful Gale, The Butcher, Admiral, and more swing back on top of their game. New operating owners Thirteen Floor Entertainment Group ensured fans and the city of Long Beach they wanted to keep the integrity of what made the original popularity of the annual Halloween event stand out again. And boy did they truly keep to that statement. It’s like seeing a dear old friend come back after being lost and drifting in the open ocean unsure if we’d ever see it again. Queen Mary is bigger and badder than ever before.
Five distinct themed areas join the collective port bringing photogenic backdrops, food, bars, interactive characters, and more to the forefront.
Seaside Village is your entry into the event setting the tone of the evening festivities. Be sure to collect your coin for access to one of 4 hidden themed bars tucked away in scare mazes, courtyard, and inside the Queen Mary herself. They’re not too hard to find as the entrance is guarded by a waiting staff member and some marked by a lit symbol.
Use your token any hidden entrance except at Big Top Terror. It was small, lightly decorated, and filled with red lighting. Be sure to take the entrance alleyway all in as the exit will be elsewhere. Not only will the slider shows set up here but you’ll find the entrance to the first and longing maze of the evening here, Breakout and on the Run.

The Midway fills your appetite with flavored popcorn, open-flame grilled meats, fried desserts, frozen treats, cocktail bars, private elevated cabana rental, and illuminating wave swinger ride. This is your entrance to board the ship for the Lullaby scare maze featuring Scary Mary. The in-the-round stage is prepped for the fire and aerial shows. Showtimes are 8:30pm, *9:30pm, 10:30pm and *11:30pm.
Whereas most acts see aerialists use silk rope, the *performer here uses metal chains! Would recommend skipping the 8:30pm showtime in favor of going through the scare mazes when scare actors are in their prime. Be sure to grab a drink and snack and be mesmerized with the standing room only shows. Our favorite view was from the perspective of the cabanas looking toward Voodoo Bayou as flames shoot up in the backdrop.

LA Haunted Hayride gallops back to Griffith Park in Los Angeles for another spooky season of frights. Nestled close to the nearby Griffth Park Merry-Go-Round, general parking and shuttle service can be found at the LA Zoo. After treking your way through security and ticket validation, find yourself at the pumpkin tunnel entrance into the town of Midnight Falls. The cursed town remains in purgatory destined to remain in 1980s era Halloween.
Be welcomed by the townspeople in Town Square with the prom queen, cheerleader, jock, ice cream man, diner cook, maintenance man, and a few others. The town could use more citizens, with more to do. The ice cream man has his truck. And that’s about it. The Halloween celebration offers sporadic Halloween decorations, hay covered floor, hay bale seating, wayfinding sign, and a swing. Photogenic pumpkin decorations include the iconic pumpkin wall and throne chair.
Even after the $45.99 (fees included) general admission ticket for an entry into the haunted hayride and three scare mazes, there are up-charges to other attractions that costs an additional $5-$10 for each experience. The Scary-Go-Round with novel skeleton horses returns to operating order after years of being a static set piece.
A new s’more station offers a tasty kickback. Zombie Splat Gellyball Experience lets guests take aim at undead targets. Take a swing at axe throwing. And Madame Aurora Seance Theatre conjures spirits. Photo opportunities with flat backdrops captures your memory of the evening. The gellyball and axe throwing could use more story to tie into the Midnight Falls story.

Three scare mazes return to LA Haunted Hayride. They’ve all been revamped and feel refreshed. But the scariest thing about them, like the rest of the event, is lack of actors. It’s great to see some upkeep and care in designing the mazes, but for years, the event just can’t seem to hire enough actors to produce a satisfying thrill. That and the lightning package could also use some work. It’s too dark to appreciate a lot of the detailed decorations. And when there is light, the result is mostly flat and dull.
“Monáe Manor” is hosted by music artist Janelle Monáe. The Halloween connection is less through her music but more of her elaborate costumes at Halloween parties. The scare maze takes what was essentially there before, exploring inside the manor then end with an outdoor cemetery. Hallways display portraits of Janelle Monáe dressed in regal affair. A kitchen uses severed human heads as the main ingredient. A greenhouse of roses in raised beds with green laser for whatever reason. Reference to “Alien”?
An out of place recording studio with dresses framed in the walls and Janelle Monáe projection in the sound booth. Navigate within the wall space accompanied by an unknown creeper. Watch your feet as the floor panel was literally springing up from alignment. No joke. A heavy door leads to the morgue then out into the cemetery. Janelle Monáe blends more into the maze more than taking centers stage. At least one actor in the cemetery appeared to have similar facial features to the music artist. After existing past the Hanging vampires, I had to remind myself if this was the scare maze that was supposed to feature the recording artist.
Personally I am not familar with the vocalist’s music, and is ultimately not essential for the experience. Not sure what real fans would have expected. After reviewing some music videos, some reference to Monáe like the skull playing a vinyl record from “Q.U.E.E.N.” or tall black cloaked figures with hooded mirrors from “Tightrope” would have been appropiate.
“Trick-or-Treat: Ding-Dong Dead” has guests as the trick-or-treats trolling through the suburban neighborhood collecting candy on Halloween night. After leaving an unkept home, through the backyard of hanging laundry, and past an oversized doghouse, to start the fun. The iconic feature to actually ring the door bell for tricks or treats make their return. You have to either be in know or brave enough to push random buttons to participate.
A staff member could encourage the first of each group to press the doorbell at the first house to imply the idea. The doorbell themselves could be difficult to locate given the lightning. If you’re lucky, an actor might point the way. Some door bells turn on an electric generator, tilt an overhead sign, or cause pipe to burst. A return to the maze’s former glory. Although they still give out the cheap candy.
“Hellbilly Halloween” is by far the scariest of the three mazes. “Monáe Manor” captures the mood and “Trick-or-Treat: Ding-Dong Dead” is more amusing. “Hellbilly Halloween” takes the grand tour of the farmhouse, backyard of hanging scarecrows, inside the brick labyrinth, back out by the water tower, then a finale through the barn filled with hanging pigs.
Metal chains, cages, chainsaws, and buckets of blood will take the squeals out of guests. Anyone with fear of the dark will get plenty at the indoor portions here. But also portions of rooms are showered in strobes and leave you temporarily blinded. Fair warning to anyone with medical conditions to light sensitivity.

Now for the main event with the haunted hayride. New wooden seating configuration makes for a more comfortable ride in the trailer. Bales of hay still used in the center seat and back half of the trailer. Still enter a cleverly designed gas station with one of two garages. Double loading process has become more refined over time and staff seem to have a better handle on guest control. The tractors still drive continously forward without stopping at show scenes.
After passing by a swarm of monstrous pumpkins and a “Midnight Falls’ billboard, various sights to behold in and beyond the city limits. Down main street of the old west origins of the town. Lake shore with whale bones, shipwreck, glowing inflatable tentacles, and a large anglerfish. Movie theater screen at the drive-in. Shipping containers with head-throwing workers swinging over head. An alien light show armed with dry ice cannons. Less fun when icy projectiles from the cannons nearly blinded me. Greenhouse of quietly staring plantlife. The lonesome roadside diner is missing the revving motorcycles from past set ups. Clowns from a traveling circus hurtles an oversized beach ball. And an explosive finale through a mineshaft.
This year the silent transitions are gracefully filled by a radio broadcast setting up the scene the tractors will endure. The hayride is a slight improvement over last year. The themes are appropriate, but it’s curious decorations come and go over time rather than adding and building up. There is still a noticeable lack of actors in each scene. They all mostly repeat the same growl or silent stare. Plastic water bottles can be seen beside the actors. And many break character as soon as the tractor leaves their area returning to conversations before being interrupted.

The live cover band of Monte Revolta and his Band of the Living Dead still bring life to horror movie tributes. But the stage could use some sort gathering of the townspeople to reenforce the Midnight Falls backstory of the 1980s era to forever relive Halloween. A pumpkin carving contest to go with the pumpkin theme of the event that caters to each character. For more bang for your buck, make an effort to see Monte Revolta.

An assortment of entertainment at Knott’s Scary Farm reach beyond the realm of scare zones and haunted houses plagued with frightful monsters and demonic entities. For those seeking refuge from terrorizing torments in a disquieting evening at Knott’s Scary Farm, the annual Halloween theme park event has a few other entertainment offerings hidden under its sleeves.
The 2024 season inside the Walter Knott Theater takes a rest from live stage show productions. Instead offering a glorious tribute to its past hosting Elvia: Mistress of the Dark with a ceremonious walk through exhibition. It may not be what fans expect or were hoping to see, but long-time Knott’s Scary Farm and Elvira patrons will get a blast from the past with displays of memorabilia, original props, and photographs from shows that play a significant role in the theater.
In fact, guests are invited up on stage to get the exact view of the audience Elvira had herself while singing, dancing, and sharing risqué humor. Cassandra Peterson may be retired from dressing up as her iconic character, but fans continue to adore her and she in return adores her fans. She’ll be making personal appearances at the theater for signings and Q& A on October 18 and October 20, 2024. “Yours Cruelly, the Elvira XXperience” opens nightly, with the exception of special appearances, on Knott’s Scary Farm nights. Video projections from past shows are also screened on stage and enjoyed from the comfort of open theater seats.

The Birdcage theater returns a collection of weekly magicians waiting to astound curious audience members. “Conjurers” performs nightly during Knott’s Scary Farm evenings.
The Wagon Camp Theater gladly returns the irreverent pop culture show, The Hanging, with its brand of adult-crude humor in “The Hanging: The Errors Tour”. The recent merger of Cedar Fair and Six Flags amusement parks over the past summer provides the ideal story for this year’s show using the power of A.I. to increase revenue for the new enterprise.

La Magnifique Carnaval du Grotesque ropes back in a variety of death defying acts to amaze the senses. Twisting aerial silk swings, suspenseful fire twirling, breath-taking wheel of death, and sharp dance routines are joined by a sultry ringmaster and mischievous clown.

Knott’s Scary Farm returns for the 2024 Halloween season after its legendary 50th anniversary the previous year. Can it possibly get any better? The answer is yes and no. But also depends on what guests look forward to. Brand new haunted houses are worthy additions to their replacements. But the shows do not hold a flickering candle.
The park is all decked out in marvelous Halloween decor from sprawling cobwebs to skeletal surprises. New interactive lanterns get a second version this year available for purchase after making their debut from last year. Updates are promised to be in store at interactive locations including special lighting, sound, and animatronic effects. The time has come to open the Hellgate on Knott’s Scary Farm 2024.
Guests will have no choice but to navigate the treacherous pathways to reach their destinations via the scare zones. All five sinister scare zones make their return with the western streets of Ghost Town, medieval meance of The Gauntlet, gangsters reign in the Gore-ing ’20s, from the watery depths of Forsaken Lake, and the comical clowns of CarnEVIL. CarnEVIL receives a refresh with new costume designs, cast of unique characters, and over the top props. Be sure to stick around any of the scare zones to people watch the fraky frights and playful banter with the costumed actors.

NEW HAUNTED HOUSES
Spiders have overtaken the crumbling home of an elderly woman inviting house guests to “Widows”. Dare to succumb to everything you fear about arachnids. Hairy legs, black eyes, invasive cobwebs, encased bodies, and sharp fangs will have your skin crawling for a way out of draping nest. This was certainly our favorite maze the event and commanded the longest wait time during our visit. Surely to be an audience favorite for design and scare factor. We challenge you not to get caught in its web of fear!

Eight Fingers Nine: The Boogeyman is another new solid winner. The Boogeyman is an ancient being preying on the colonial townsfolk. Emerging from the shadows in search of fresh meat, the Boogeyman induces sleep paralysis to feed on its unsuspecting victims. Keep your eyes open defending yourself from vicious bites and crossfires with monster hunters. Or be lost in a state of submissive slumber never to wake again. New delights in various settings of courtyards, bedrooms, barns, forest, witchcraft, and twisting roots keep the sleep walking alert with terrifying textures, eerie colors, and formidable scares.

The Devil’s Elixir is the new addictive cocktail that is all the rage in the Prohibition-era. But the mysterious glowing green beverage has a toxic effect on the unsuspecting consumers from The Blind Tiger. The source of murderous mayhem may lie somewhere in the Argive Hotel. “Room 13” is part of the link to uncovering the diabolical scandal.

“Origins: The Curse of Calico” takes the citizens of Calico on a witch hunt for Sarah Marshall, the accused of unsavory witchcraft. The bounty is set and the search is on from the court house, jail house, funeral home, haunted shack, and catacombs. Beware of the rising dead and legendary catawampus before Sarah Marshall uses the Grimoire spell book to seal Calico’s demise.

Campers stumble upon “The Grimoire” book entranced by the powers within. The Grimoire sends all in its wake into another world, another time when the book drew its readers to a grim fate. Spellbound creatures emerge with every word spoken from its pages. The next chapter may just be your last. We love the camping aspect and connection to The Green Witch producing a strong interconnected storyline, but we’re ready for something new to further push the narrative.

“The Chilling Chambers” collects remnants of retired scare mazes to create this tribute experience. A foreboding cathedral opens the portal to the past from some of the best themes of legendary scares. Long-time Knott’s Scary Farm fans can spot favorite props, masks, and sets throughout including coffins, plaques, and tombstones.
Debuting last year for the event’s 50th anniversary, the haunted house decided to drop dead its featured host character completely leaving The Keeper ironically absent in his own home. We could see the longevity of this concept with different rooms changing out every year as haunted houses retire. Would love to see the Kraken battling the giant shark from “The Depths”. The soon to be retired “Wax Works” could also be a fitting home.

RETIRING HAUNTED HOUSES
“Wax Works” abandoned wax museum is home to the most creative body horror figures you can possibly imagine. Beautifully grotesque works of art is ready to inspire. The hardworking artists are always in need of a fresh supply of human flesh to continue practicing their craft. The hot cauldron is ready for the next top model. The molten masterpiece will not go down without a bloody fight to the bitter end. Not only melting beeswax, this ingenious haunted house melts our hearts as well.

“Bloodline 1842” sees the battleground of a steam punk city in ruins with the fight between vampires and monster hunters. Slide through the back door of a tavern and into the hidden armory. From there, war is on with the bloody thirsty stalkers to reach the vampire king to destroy his kind once and for all. An intriguing concept that debuted with interactive laser guns. Thankfully the interactive portion was dropped. But time did not faire well. We’re happily glad to see this haunted house send off into the sunset.

The entertainment offering this year is on the lackluster side compared to last season when Knott’s pulled out all the stops for it’s monumental anniversary. If the live shows are something on your must-do list and you only have one night to spend, this is not the year to focus on shows. However with repeat visitors throughout the season, by all means, take in all the atmosphere.
“Le Magnifique Carnaval Du Grotesque” sticks to what it does best with its ringmaster, dancers, and three death-defying acts. Newcomers may get a little lost with the loosely connected ringmaster subplot from last year. The dancers have all new routines that excites the crowd. The three acts and clown, although new, looks familar. The show itself somehow feels like it has a shorter runtime. If you happen to be walking by the Calico Mine Stage as the show is performing, it is worth a stop.
“The Hanging: The Errors Tour” at the Wagon Camp is unfortunately one of the weakest productions in recent memory. The pop culture parody culture show was a huge letdown. Too much time spent on set up with the Cedar Fair and Six Flags merger. The A.I. generator concept is good, but the lackluster build up could not make the audience care enough. The jokes did not blend and not landing well. Lots of missed opportunities. And a lack of noteworthy fights and kills. A growing number of the audience leaving the theater five minutes into the show is not a good indicator. The supposedly most evil person of the year chosen to be hanged generated cricket noises. Maybe there was a reason why showtimes were not been listed outside the theater. This show might see multiple rewrites and a different person to be hanged by the end of the season. It’s been done before. But time will tell if any effort is made.
The Birdcage Theater returns the magic shows with weekly guests in “Conjurers”. A new illusionist can be something to look forward to every weekend. This also provides a reason for season pass-holders to make a stop taking a break away from the scares.

Knott’s Scary Farm is open on select nights September 19 – November 2, 2024. For your consideration, be sure to look for special event bag and chaperone policies. For more information and ticket sales, visit https://www.knotts.com/events/scary-farm
We’re always excited to find a new Halloween event, especially one that’s not too scary so our four year old can join in. Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns fits the bill perfectly: young and old alike can move at their own pace to enjoy thousands of perfectly carved and lit pumpkins in a witchy, foggy, spooky path through Whittier Narrows Recreation Area.
Other jack o’lantern events have come and gone in years past, but this one definitely stands out. Not only are the displays elaborate, with choreographed lights and music to enhance each exhibit, but halfway through the trail, an oasis awaits: the Fun Zone (which is an additional $5 charge per person).
Our kid was definitely ready to blow off some steam after patiently gaping at so many gourds, and the Fun Zone was just what the doctor ordered. Several gigantic inflatable bounce pads, slides, and obstacle courses were there for all ages to enjoy (just take off your shoes).
For those who are maybe past the age where bounce houses hold charm, an open air bar was available nearby (and without an additional admission charge). Wine, beer, cocktails, and the real star of the show – s’mores kits. Available for $8 each, the s’mores kits include a branded marshmallow, mini Hershey bar, graham crackers, and a skewer to use at one of the multiple fire pits. It was fun just watching so many people do something they probably haven’t done in years – try to keep their marshmallow from burning up!
After bouncing and s’moresing, we pressed on to the second half of the trail, which held even more spectacular sights. The big finale was a series of ocean themed vignettes, including a massive inflatable kraken.
Timed tickets start at $29.99 for adults 13+, $24.99 for kids 12 and under, with skip-the-line anytime access starting at $44.99. Add-ons can add up – the Fun Zone is worth it for anyone with kids, and who can resist roasting your own s’mores? The Pumpkin 3D glasses ($3.99 a pop) are a safe skip, but are a fun novelty. Preferred parking is available for $20 (free parking means a bit of a walk). If you think you might want digital copies of the photos they’ll take of you upon arrival, that’s $5.
Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns runs September 26 – 29, most nights in October, and November 1 – 2. Arrival times do sell out, so if you want to make sure you’re not forced to arrive at 9PM, buy your tickets well in advance. They’re available here.
Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group is the world’s leading Halloween-themed entertainment company. Other event is Los Angeles include, The Queen Mary Dark Harbor and Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.

“Waitress” is the newest musical on the menu for a limited time at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The Southern California regional theatre premiere is cooked up by McCoy Rigby Entertainment. Book by Jessie Nelson. Music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles. Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly. Musical direction by Jennifer Lin. Choreography by Cost n’ Mayor. Direction by Abbey O’Brien. Abbey has been with the initial Broadway production as an Associate Choreographer.
Jenna (Desi Oakley) is a skillful pie-maker who dreams of leaving her rocky marriage to an abusive Earl (Brian Krinsky) from a small American town in the South. Jenna works as a, you guessed it, waitress at the local diner along with her friends timid Dawn (Rianny Vasquez) and headstrong Becky (Dominique Kent). Unsuccessfully pushy Cal (Brian Cali) keeps the close-knit trio in line while in the steamy kitchen. Businessman and fussy owner Joe (Cleavant Derricks) is a frequent customer himself enjoying Jenna’s aptly named daily pie specials.
Jenna’s reflection of unappetizing life and heartful soul raises scrumptious concoctions of creatively crafty handmade pies. Pies are good enough to earn the prize-winning money from a nearby baking contest. An unexpected pregnancy pushes those plans even further. A spicy affair with charming obstetrician Doctor Pomatter (Ben Jacoby) becomes the secret ingredient neither of them knew they were hungry for.
“Waitress” cooks up a sweet menu of flavors you can’t get enough of. Desi Oakley, Rianny Vasquez, and Dominique Kent is the sugar, spice, and everything nice blend of harmonious voices that will make you crave than humble slices. The perfect trio who push and pull with humor and heart. To have Desi return to the role she originated in the first national tour in 2017 and in West End in 2020 is a special treat not to be underestimated. Her extensive expertise of the character and story stands out.
Brian Krinsky’s Earl showcases toxic hope turned rancid. Cleavant Derricks’s Joe displays the warm nature hidden behind the crusty exterior. Jared Gertner as adorable Ogie, Dawn’s love interest, and his bouncy serenade “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me” was a delightful show-stopping number bringing contagious smiles and uncontrollable laughter. Dawn and Ogie’s robust romance as well as Becky’s willful antics draw parallels to Jenna’s predicament that complement their dynamic friendships.
“Waitress” substitutes the lavish Broadway style for a piece of the real American pie through quaint choreography and nourishing vocals. One part humble, two parts spiritual, three-part zest. And nothing but heart. I’d call this wholesome musical special the “Down to Earth” pie.
No more waiting. Order up on “Waitress”, now serving on select days September 20 to October 13, 2024. Cast talkbacks on September 26 and October 10. Open caption on October 5 at 2 pm show. Content advisory as the show contains mature content and language with implied domestic violence. For more information including ticket sales, visit https://lamiradatheatre.com/current_events/waitress/
