Her Universe and Mattel Celebrated 10 Years of Geek Couture

Her Universe

The 10th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show, presented by Mattel, electrified this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, captivating a packed audience with a fusion of fashion and fandom. Within moments, the show dazzled as Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein unveiled a groundbreaking projection mapping dress blending technology with 65 years of Barbie fashion, while Broadway’s Michael James Scott ignited the crowd with a vibrant performance. Co-hosts further wowed with geek couture inspired by Mattel icons like Barbie, Polly Pocket, and more.

Twenty-five designers showcased their extraordinary creations throughout the night, drawing inspiration from beloved fandoms and pop culture icons like Barbie, Beetlejuice, and others. From intricate details to innovative designs, each look celebrated the power of imagination and honored milestones like the 65th anniversary of Barbie.

Her Universe

This year’s winning designers will not only collaborate on a collection with Her Universe but also each receive a $10,000 prize to mark the show’s 10th anniversary.

Judges winner – Wes Jenkins, Orlando, FL
Audience winner – Candice Miller, Louisa County, VA

“It’s been my dream to open up the show with a projection mapping look since 2017, but I didn’t have the right team to help me pull it off—until now!” gushed Eckstein.

Ashley Eckstein’s groundbreaking opening Barbie look was a marvel of collaboration, involving over twenty designers, engineers, and artists. A 40,000 lumens projector illuminated a single dress with seven iconic Barbie fashions, celebrating 65 years of the iconic doll.

The fusion of fashion and technology was led by AOA and Live Everyday Studios, who created a life-size Barbie box illusion and custom virtual Barbie fashions. Renowned music team Nathan and Andrea Padgett scored the opening with a moving rendition of “Roar,” adapted to showcase the music of each Barbie era.

Polly Pocket also took center stage with a lobby transformed into a nostalgic Polly Pocket experience. Eckstein even appeared as Polly Pocket herself, emerging from a life-size compact in a heart-shaped skirt.

Other Mattel-inspired fashion highlights included Eckstein and Scott as Totally Hair Barbie and Ken, and in matching outfits made from Uno cards. Scott also sported a custom-made Hot Wheels suit.

Throughout the night, audience members won prizes ranging from Barbie dolls to Uno card decks, keeping the fun and excitement going.

Movie Review: Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a riotous homecoming for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, delivering a much-needed jolt of adrenaline after an eight-month hiatus. Ripping through the multiverse with gleeful abandon, this R-rated romp not only lives up to fan expectations but may be the most exhilarating MCU entry since “Avengers: Endgame.”

Ryan Reynolds’ return as the Merc with a Mouth is a masterclass in manic energy and impeccable comedic timing. At the same time, Hugh Jackman’s reprisal of Wolverine adds a gravitas and world-weariness that perfectly complements Deadpool’s unhinged antics. Their chemistry is electric, sparking off each other with hilarious and surprisingly touching results.

The plot hinges on Deadpool’s quest to save his reality by recruiting a Wolverine, leading him to a version deemed “the worst” by Paradox, a disgruntled TVA employee. This sets the stage for a multiversal adventure that takes full advantage of the MCU’s expansive lore, culminating in a trip to the Void, a desolate purgatory overflowing with forgotten characters from past superhero films.

Her Universe

This “trash heap” of the multiverse is a treasure trove of Easter eggs and nostalgic nods, a veritable playground for fans to revel in. The unexpected cameos are not just gratuitous fan service but woven into the narrative with surprising ingenuity, offering laugh-out-loud moments and genuine emotional beats.

Emma Corrin is chilling as Cassandra Nova, the telepathic twin sister of Professor X, proves to be a formidable antagonist with her mind-bending abilities. Corrin’s performance is a mesmerizing blend of icy composure and simmering rage, adding a layer of menace to the film’s otherwise comedic tone.

Her Universe

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a film that knows exactly what it is and revels in its own irreverence. It gleefully pokes holes in the convoluted multiverse logic that has plagued Phase 4 of the MCU, while simultaneously offering a loving homage to the remnants of 20th Century Fox’s superhero franchises. It’s a self-aware celebration of comic book absurdity, unafraid to skewer the tropes and clichés of the genre.

This is a film that succeeds where many of its Phase 4 counterparts have faltered. It adheres to a tried-and-true formula while simultaneously critiquing and parodying its own shortcomings. It’s a bold, refreshing approach that breathes new life into the MCU, reminding us why we fell in love with these characters in the first place.

Her Universe

In a genre that often takes itself too seriously, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a breath of fresh air. It’s a bloody, bawdy, and surprisingly heartfelt adventure that will leave you laughing, cheering, and maybe even shedding a tear or two. It’s a must-see for fans of the genre and a promising sign of what’s to come for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Haunted Mansion Holiday Returns to Disneyland with a Virtual Queue Twist

Haunted Mansion

Thrills and chills await Disneyland guests as the Haunted Mansion Holiday makes its much-anticipated return on July 29th! But there’s a twist: the attraction will be accessible exclusively through a virtual queue system.

What is the Haunted Mansion Holiday?

For those unfamiliar with the magic, the Haunted Mansion Holiday is a unique overlay of the classic Haunted Mansion attraction, inspired by Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Jack Skellington and his spooky friends from Halloween Town take over the mansion for a delightfully eerie holiday celebration. From the iconic gingerbread house in the ballroom to the festive décor throughout, this attraction is a beloved tradition for many Disneyland visitors.

Why a Virtual Queue?

While the mansion itself is ready to welcome guests, ongoing construction in the surrounding area necessitates the use of a virtual queue. This system aims to manage crowds and ensure a smoother experience for everyone.

How does the Virtual Queue work?

There are two opportunities each day to join the virtual queue:

  • 7:00 AM: Guests with a theme park reservation for Disneyland Park can request to join the virtual queue through the Disneyland app. This option is available to those with one-park tickets or Park Hopper tickets.
  • 12:00 PM (Noon): Guests already inside Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park (with a Park Hopper ticket) can request to join the virtual queue through the app.

Remember, each guest can only enter the virtual queue once per day.

Tips for Joining the Virtual Queue

  • Download the Disneyland App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Disneyland app installed on your phone and that your park tickets are linked to your Disney account.
  • Be Prepared: Set an alarm to remind yourself of the virtual queue opening times.
  • Act Fast: Demand is expected to be high, so be ready to request to join the queue as soon as it opens.
  • Check for Updates: Keep an eye on the app for updates on your queue status.

Additional Notes

  • A standby queue will not be available at this time.
  • Guests are encouraged to explore other attractions and offerings in the park while they wait for their virtual queue to be called.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday is a must-do for fans of both Disneyland and “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” While the virtual queue system may be a change, it’s designed to make the experience more enjoyable for all. So, dust off your spirit jerseys, grab your park pals, and get ready for a spooktacular holiday adventure!

Theatre Review: CLUE Live on Stage

Clue

Do you think you may know whodunit? Take your vote in the lobby before entering the theater and be prepared for 80 minutes of suspense and laughter (there is no intermission, but you won’t miss it).

If you’re a fan of the 1985 film, the storyline will not come as a surprise. My friend who accompanied me to this production is a huge fan of the movie and was completely delighted at the performance.

The entire show is set in 1954, inside Boddy Manor, a mansion in New England. Six strangers have been invited to the mansion under pseudonyms by the master of the house, Mr. Boddy, for a common factor they will soon learn they share. The strangers, the housemaid, and the butler are quickly wrapped up in a whirlwind of deceit, hilarity, and murder.

Her Universe

This performance was fantastic! The entire production is a farcical comedy, with characters running in and out of rooms, and running in place to convey movement. With the characters having such over-the-top personalities, it was important that they be well-cast, and boy were they. The standout performances in terms of comedic timing and physicality were Mark Price (Wadsworth) and John Shartzer (Mr. Green)—each of them had me laughing until I almost cried.

However, each actor consistently got laughs for their antics, and I was honestly sad when it was over. There are plenty of references to the board game from which this play gets its name and theme, and overall it’s a delightful performance of wordplay, pratfalls, and rapid-fire comedy.

Her Universe

The set design was fairly simple, yet effective. With the entire show taking place within the mansion, there was only one primary practical backdrop. Additional rooms were created by moving other smaller set pieces in and out of the scene.

On-stage lighting with sconces and chandeliers was a very pleasing touch. Costumes were wonderfully designed and distinct, adding a lot to the caricatures being portrayed—each needing a very specific look to represent their namesakes.

Overall, this show is a must-see if you’re looking for a night of mystery and laughs. With some violent themes and the use of weapons, it may not be appropriate for smaller children, but it’s a great show for a night out or with older kids.
