Meet the Cast – 'The Big Short' Press Conference

On Friday Nov 13, Paramount Pictures’ film The Big Short hosted a press conference at The Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. After screening the film the night before, press was able to discuss the movie with those involved in creating it. Participating talent included: Actors Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Hamish Linklater, Producer Jeremy Kleiner, Screenwriter Charles Randolph, Author Michael Lewis, and Director Adam McKay.

The Big Short is a movie about a group of lucky Wall Street men who made out big after betting against the housing industry, investing in credit default swaps, predicting the financial crash of 2008. Carell, Gosling, and Bale’s characters are all based on real-life people. Director Adam McKay created an adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine”. McKay began the conference by explaining his desire to share this story on the big-screen.

“I started reading all the books I could get my hands on and a certain point when you are doing that you come across The Big Short. And a bunch of people told me I have to read it…I picked it up around 9:00 and was in bed and just started reading it and couldn’t put it down. It had this page turning energy to it. Yet at the same time it was explaining financial esoteric to me and then at the same time the characters were heart breaking and real and specific…When I was done with it I was just like, this is one of the books of our times.”

Q. For you Jeremy, people have a hard time describing this movie or categorizing this movie. As a producer, how would you describe this film?

A. Jeremy Kleiner:

“I like to describe this film not by using found language used to describe other categories of films but rather to treat it as its own terms. I think the film is a supremely personal expression of a filmmaker in command…I think the cast that is up here today expressed that in the range of their work. I love to talk about the film as Adam’s film that expresses his personal sensibility in a wonderful way.”

Q. Steve, staying on Adam for a second, you have obviously worked with Adam a lot before. What do you think it is about Adam that makes him the right person to write this movie?

A. Steve Carell:

“He’s weird! Smart, weird guy. We’ve known each other since the late 80s… He’s always the funniest person in the room. Every time I work with him he is always the person with the most unique and funniest idea. The idea you wish that you had. The one that when he gives it to you, you hope you don’t screw up. I agree, I think he is the perfect choice to do this. When we first talked about the script, Adam said it is very dense and complicated material but more than anything I want it to be entertaining. And I thought the script reflected that. Ya he is sort of the dream director to work with as an actor.”

Q. Ryan, what was it that attracted you to this particular character and the movie frankly. What made you want to do it?

A. Ryan Gosling:

“The jheri curl. You had me at jheri curl! You know I love Adam’s movies and in some ways they are not even movies, they are like friends of mine or something. I will check in with Stepbrothers and see how it’s doing. I love them and to be able to work with him at all was exciting and then to get this script and see it’s sort of a departure for him and to be a part of that as well has made it more exciting. I have learned a lot from the script, and the book, and the research process. I think Adam and even with a combination of Michael, their work its very unique this film. Its very inclusive and there is no grandstanding. Adam has a way of maintaining a sense of humor about something that is obviously very upsetting.”

Q. Christian, most of your scenes are alone. Is that easier or more difficult to work that way? Secondarily, what was it like to see the film for the first time having not necessarily work with everybody?

IMG_3948

A. Christian Bale:

“I didn’t meet with anybody. I just met Steve last night. Ryan and I have met before. I really love just working by myself. It’s so much fun!…But it’s amazing how much you can get done when there is nobody else. I mean we shot for nine days I think and we just banged out pages so quick. And when you are by yourself there is no real continuity you gotta worry about. So each and every take you can do whatever you bloody want. So I prefer to make every film that way. Sounds great.”

Q. Charles, you were the first person to sort of tackle Michael’s book. How did you approach that task and what was the most difficult part of that process?

A. Charles Randolph:

“Plan B and I agreed early on that we were going to honor the book and the complexity of the narrative in terms of all these characters and all these arcs. It was really a matter of figuring out how to dramatize this information and how to do it in the most entertaining way possible. Adam, added this layer to it that was just genius. His ability to deepen it and make it entertaining on a whole different way. Adams voice brought it all together.”

Q. Michael Lewis, why do your books make such good movies? And secondarily, is there a book of yours that you would like to see turn into a movie?

A. Michael Lewis:

“None of my books were written as movies. I didn’t have in the back of my mind when I decided to write about credit default swaps that someone was going to make a movie of it…I think the books have been lucky in the hands they’ve landed in, in the movie business…It tracks passionate interest. (answering the second part of the question) “Liar’s Poker” was my first and it seems to me the most obvious. And I have actually written a script for it…I think people don’t want to go see a movie about Wall Street. It’s a hard subject to get to a popular audience.”

Q. I would love to ask Steve, Christian, and Ryan if you met your counterparts before you did the movie?

A. Steve Carell:

“I did, I met the person this was based on. We had breakfast and I went over to his apartment and met his family. So ya I got to pick his brain and find out how he factored into this world. And I was frankly surprised to be offered this part. I was very excited. Although I felt like one of these things is not like the other. When you say Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale. I talked to Adam before I started, and Christian was shooting his stuff, and we were talking about characters. And I said, ‘How’s it going’ and he said ‘Christian is unbelievable. It’s incredible. It’s transcendent.’ And I’m like great! I get to follow that! So it was intimidating because this entire cast is full of great actors. Every part really stands on its own.”

A. Christian Bale:

“I did meet with Mike Burry and I just think the guy is wonderful. He is such a charming man and so phenomenally interesting and we talked for hours and hours. And incredibly generous with his time and his thoughts to me. I really wish I could see it with him one day.”

A. Ryan Gosling:

“Yes, I got a chance to meet the guy that my character is based on. The situation was little different in my case as well because the character that I play has a role in the film but he is also the narrator and tour guide through this world and sometimes felt like talk time host. I would have to break the forth wall and introduce a new guest or new segment. I really had to take some liberties with that character because obviously it’s very different from the real person.”

Q. There is a layer of levity I love. I am just curious about your inspiration for some of the scenes where we saw people you would never expect, like Selena Gomez or Chef Anthony Bourdain explaining a very complex financial transaction. How did that come about?

A. Adam McKay:

“Taking these pop icons and familiar faces we are use to seeing everyday, in a fun entertaining format, suddenly telling us real salient financial information. In the case of Selena Gomez, we know her as a pop star and suddenly she is explaining one of the more complex financial instruments you can buy. That was a definite theme throughout the movie. We also knew practically too that there is just no way to explain these complex instruments without some sort of device. When the idea came about with well let’s play with pop icons, let’s play with popular culture, somehow it felt right.”

Q. Sometimes, it’s too much to follow. Do you follow the Wall Street Journal?

A. Christian Bale:

“For me, I am terrible with numbers. It went in one ear and stayed there throughout filming and as soon as I was done filming it went out the other ear again. What I found with watching the film, it’s entertaining first and foremost and so you get it…The industry tries to make you feel dumb and it works. You understood the point and that’s the whole essence of it. I was really surprised and really proud of myself that I did get it.”

The Big Short hits theaters December 11th with a limited release and world wide December 23rd.

Movie Review 'The Big Short' is Nothing Short of Oscar-Worthy Potential

The story of the home mortgage loan crisis leading to the global financial crash of 2008 is something that most didn’t see coming. The Housing Bubble is now something we now know all too well, but most do not truly understand. However, the true story of a few intellectual Wall Street guys Michael Burry, Mark Baum, Jared Vennett, Jamie Shipley and Charlie Geller taking a closer look at the housing and banking industry and making billions off of the heart-breaking loss of millions of jobs, money-loss, and government scandal is a story that needs to be heard. Director and Screenwriter Adam McKay’s film The Big Short left the audience with a feeling of riveting candor to the world we already know, but choose to dismiss. Its play on popular culture, big money, and ignorant bliss is without a doubt enchanting. The filmography and character development is prime.

Adapted from Michael Lewis’ best selling book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine”, the film tackles on some deeply complex real-life characters who saw the crash coming and decided to profit off of it by betting against the housing market investing into credit default swaps. Starring Hollywood’s leading men—Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.

THE BIG SHORT

Christian Bale’s character, Michael Burry, is introduced as an American hedge fund manager of Scion Capital and a stock market investor. His messy hair, glass eye, and old tee are as prominent as his socially awkward behavior. His nonchalant crazed demeanor is shown initially when he hires on a young ambitious interviewee who he asks to review thousands of individual mortgages (which no one does). After reviewing the data, Burry comes to the realization that most of the subprime mortgages are on the verge of failing. It is then where he decides to meet with as many banks as he can about putting billions of dollars of his Investor’s money to bet against the housing market. Christian Bale’s performance is Oscar-worthy and something unrecognizable. Since for the most part he filmed alone, Bale was able to sink deeper into unleashing a spot on portrayal.

With the word on the street being that a foolish man just handed over billions of dollars to the banks, Ryan Gosling’s character, Jared Vennett moved in for the kill. The alpha man who kicks everyone out of the men’s restroom when he is present, decides to steal Burry’s very idea after analyzing that the foolish man was right. After being rejected by a few banks, Vennett heads over to Mark Baum’s team for help.

THE BIG SHORT

Moving across Wall Street, Steve Carell’s character is introduced. Mark Baum is a hedge funder who hates the banking industry he works in but feels like he can change everything. His short exploding temper travels within each scene. This then leaves the audience forgetting the 40-year-old-virgin we all know and love. Instead, he becomes a very relatable man working hard and hindering on the realization that it is extremely difficult to make the world a better place, especially when that world is called Wall Street. Baum decides to investigate on whether the predictable housing bubble is truly foreseen. Meeting with rich bragging realtors and mortgage brokers who are profiting over giving out bad loans confirmed Vennett’s prediction, which led Baum to shake hands with his deal.

Actors Finn Wittrock and John Margaro’s characters, Jamie Shipley and Charlie Geller, join the fun by teaming up with retired banking big shot Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt’s character). Rickert plays a humbled environmentalist who got out of the industry because of personal vindication of a corrupt business. Since they became successful in making investments in their parent’s garage, Shipley and Gellar simply want in with the big boys of banking. They wanted more. One banks rejection leaves the, already millionaire, young men hunting for blood. Credit default swaps became their calling and Rickert was their inside man.

Since most banking terms fly over our heads, McKay decided to help us out by dumbing down the confusing terminology with celebrity cameos. For your humor and viewing pleasure, big-screen hottie Margot Robbie breaks down the term “sub-prime mortgages” while in a hot tub naked, sipping champagne. Pop star Selena Gomez explains synthetic CDO’s (collateralized debt obligation) while playing Blackjack. This might seem insane between the midst of a dramatic plot unfolding. However, it was genius thanks to McKay’s mastermind of directing. Pop culture was a definite theme throughout the film using footage of MTV’s The Hills, ads of the introduction of the iPhone, and rap videos. Basically showing society’s blindness to what was really going on.

The end of the film takes a turn from the battle-like sensation of digging for answers to the pure turmoil of being right all along. These investors all had distinct mindsets after winning millions, even billions, of dollars after the crash in 2008. Audience reaction is solely melancholy. We know what already happened, but seeing it on the big-screen somehow made it different. Why? This is how I have come to admire McKay for taking on Michael Lewis’ book and creating a platform where people feel comfortable to sit and understand. Paramount’s The Big Short is the movie of the year to look out for! You can decide for yourself when it opens in theaters December 11th with a limited release and worldwide December 23rd.

Boutique Luxury at The Landsby in Solvang

I just had a memorable stay at The Landsby Hotel in Solvang and I don’t know what I miss the most: the hotel’s luxurious and beautiful Tower Suite that looks over the idyllic Danish-inspired village, or the delicious and eclectic food and drink at Mad & Vin, the property’s signature restaurant.

My getaway to Solvang and The Landsby began last week, when a friend and I took the 101 Freeway north along the coast to Santa Barbara, where we transferred to State Route 154, and drove through the Santa Ynez Mountains, past Lake Cachuma, to our destination. Here we checked into The Landsby’s gorgeous Tower Suite, located on the second floor.

Highlighted by a sitting room with a fireplace and wet bar, and huge Jacuzzi tub for two, the two-story suite is fit for a Danish king or queen. The room, located in the Tower of the building, includes two bathrooms, a comfy king bed, 47-inch flat screen TV, a keurig coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, free WiFi, fluffy bathrobes, a walk-in shower, and a delicious complimentary continental breakfast for all hotel guests.

The two-story Tower Suite at The Landsby is stylish and luxurious

Something else that makes the Tower Suite and the rest 41-room boutique hotel stand out is its stylish design, influenced by traditional Scandinavian aesthetic. This is shown in its modern, clean lines, bright and open layout, and the use of blonde woods, brushed brass accents, and elegant but comfortable hand-crafted furnishings in all guestrooms.

pic C

A highlight in the Tower Suite is the huge, two-person Jacuzzi tub

When not relaxing in the suite or soaking in the tub, we were exploring the Solvang village. Named by Sunset magazine as one of the “10 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the Western United States,” Solvang’s rich history dates back to 1911 when adventurous Danish-Americans traveled across the plains from Iowa to establish a colony and escape harsh Midwestern winters. Since then the city has retained its heritage with numerous Danish-styled structures with windmills and pitched roofs.

The village, located about 125 miles from LA, is also home to a host of Danish bakeries, restaurants, and stores offering comfort food and trinkets to remind one of Denmark. Around town there is a copy of the famous Little Mermaid statue from Copenhagen, as well as a large bust of Danish fable writer Hans Christian Andersen. There is also the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art, one of the few museums outside of Denmark devoted to the Danish culture and the Danish-American experience. Elverhøj preserves and exhibits the history and Danish culture of Solvang and promotes the arts.

There is nothing like a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Solvang Village

One of the highlights of our Solvang getaway was a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, led by two huge Belgium draft horses that clip-clop through town. Along the way, the driver/guide, who was dressed in traditional Danish garb, gave everyone on board a fun history lesson on Solvang. He also made an exciting U-turn on a small side stree – quite a feat for a long carriage being pulled by massive horses.

After the ride, we headed back to The Landsby for happy hour and a couple hand-crafted cocktails at the hotel bar. On the advice of the bartender we tried the Admiral Ruyter, a potent and tasty drink with vodka, strawberry, cracked pepper, balsamic shrub, orange bitters and lemon zest. For dinner we walked through the bar to Mad & Vin for fantastic culinary journey that is by itself worth a return visit to The Landsby. We began the meal with a perfectly cooked jumbo crab cake with tomato preserve and a marinated lettuce wedges, followed by a savory squash soup, and a farmer’s salad with walnuts, pomegranate seeds, arugula, mozzarella and gem lettuce wedges.

pic E

The food at Mad & Vin is worth a drive from Los Angeles

For the main course I devoured a super fresh and hearty seafood hot pot with Pacific white shrimp, clams, scallops, and sausage in a saffron broth. My friend enjoyed a tender, moist, 8oz flat iron steak, with cheese-stuffed piquillo peppers, pomegranate shrub greens and duck fat fries. Back in our Tower Suite, we concluded the evening with local, Santa Barbara wine and a soak in the Jacuzzi tub.

Award-Winning Composer Michael Giacchino Scoring Disney 'ZOOTOPIA'

Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino marks his first-ever feature collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios for next spring’s big-screen adventure “Zootopia.” Featuring an 80-piece orchestra and conductor Tim Simonec, Giacchino’s score is being recorded this week.

“In a world as vast as Zootopia, we needed someone who could deliver a score that can feel exotic and powerful, but also provide that same emotional intimacy,” said director Byron Howard. “We tell stories with images, Michael tells stories with music. ‘Zootopia’ is a massive film with deep emotional themes running throughout the story, and Michael was the perfect choice to bring the music of this extraordinary animal world to life.”

Added director Rich Moore, “Zootopia is a thriving metropolis inhabited by animals from around globe, and Michael’s music has captured a wonderful international spirit that marries perfectly with the visuals. I’m very excited for audiences to experience this incredible new world we’ve created together.”

ZOOTOPIA

According to the composer, the score is very diverse instrumentally. “There are flavors of world music sprinkled in everywhere. But at its core, the score always follows the emotional story of Hopps and Nick.”

Giacchino’s credits feature some of the most popular and acclaimed film projects in recent history, including Disney•Pixar’s “Inside Out,” “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille,” as well as “Jurassic World,” “MissionImpossible: Ghost Protocol” and “The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” His score for Disney•Pixar’s 2009 feature “Up” earned him an Oscar®, a Golden Globe®, the BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award and two GRAMMY® Awards.

“The process of working with Michael is unique in that it doesn’t feel like a process,” said Moore. “It feels more like visiting with a childhood friend. We started by talking about the film—the themes, the tone, the characters, the emotional moments. We talked about what inspired us, and our hopes for the movie. And from those conversations, Michael began building the score. When we listened to his work together, an amazing thing happened. Michael somehow took those conversations and turned them into music. It’s creative collaboration, pure and simple.”

ZOOTOPIA

Said Giacchino, “We’ve had a lot of fun working together and the directors have been wonderfully supportive of me throughout the entire process, giving me an incredible amount of freedom to really explore the tone and emotional side of the story.

“I am really proud to be a part of this film,” continued Giacchino. “It’s one of those films with a huge heart and wonderfully realized characters set within a story that’s not only incredibly fun and entertaining but takes an honest look at our own world and the important issues we deal with living in such a diverse society. That’s what really attracted me to the film—the chance to write music that reflects these kind of challenges.”

Added Howard, “Michael approaches composing from an intuitive, emotional place that’s so completely personal to him, but at the same time, his themes and musical storytelling are completely universal. You fall in love with the music the instant you hear it.”

'42nd Street' Delivers What You're Wanting

42nd StreetThe energy and dazzle of 42ND STREET has made its way to Segerstrom Center for the Arts with all of its tap dancing glory.  The lively show is truly classic Broadway at its finest.  Fans of musical theater and dance can’t skip this one.  It’s a show full of jolliness and jazz hands that’s reminiscent of the Broadway shows of old.  You’ll be treated to a fast pace bright and cheery non-stop-fun musical experience that’s your quintessential Broadway show, and it’s all right here in Costa Mesa.

42nd Street began on Broadway in 1980 with its on-stage adaptation of the 1933 movie musical of the same name featuring now near classic jazz standards from Harry Warren.  It has since become the 14th longest running production on Broadway featuring a Tony award winning revival show in 2001.  Today’s touring production still contains the spirit, endless music and flashy dancing you’ll be attending for, but lacks some of the grandioseness set and production value from the revival. However, if I never knew there was any type of scaled back set-design, I’m sure I would have never noticed an issue.

The more-or-less simplistic story tells the tale of a starry-eyed innocent young dancer named Peggy Sawyer (Caitlin Ehlinger) who leaves her Allentown home and comes to 1933 New York to audition for a new Broadway musical produced by the legendary Broadway giant Julian Marsh (Matthew J. Taylor).  The bulk of the story follows Peggy on her journey to becoming a cast member of the new production, Pretty Lady, but faces her own struggles in believing herself.  When opportunity of becoming the shows leading star comes knocking at her door, she must overcome her personal battles to help save the show from ending its run short.

2

While the shows plot may seem simple and more a tale as old as time, 42nd Street is not as much about the plot but rather the dancing and phenomenal performances.  Many of the songs do feature tap dancing or a large choreographed large number.  Many songs may be somewhat familiar even if you aren’t already knowledgable of the show, which can help man casual theater goers entertained.

Songs such as the ridiculous yet well-loved “We’re in the Money” and “Lullaby of Broadway” eclipse any faulty foot work and lack of top-notch singing by featuring countless dancers and intricately designed choreography that can get the audiences hootin’ and hollerin’ finishing with an abrupt thunderous applause.  Much of the show features such moments with many highs are only a couple of lows that are only for the nitpickers.

There’s the appropriate level of humor strung around mostly from the Pretty Lady’s production runner Maggie Jones (Britte Steele), which is her own character gravitating from all sorts of slapstick humor and overacting that plays to the audiences perfectly, but never annoying.  The interactions from all the actors contain a portion of overacting that plays well for this show and feels more like an early 1900s musical production. Fitting.

3

Matthew J. Taylor who plays Julian Marsh is the breakout character in my opinion.  His Howard Hughes ‘30s accent is done superbly yet still has a touch of over-the-topness to make it truly standout.  It’s comical, but is exactly as one would imagine in this romanticized version of 1930’s Broadway.  His forced upon star of the show Dorothy Brock (Kaitlin Lawrence) has the greatest vocal chops in the show even though she was supposed to play a character that practically paid her way into the starring role of Marsh’s show.  I suppose I would rather have to listen to ill-fitted incredible voice than a forced dumb downed vocal performance.

However, there is the star of the show, Peggy, who is played thru the innocence of Caitlin Ehlinger.  Her role couldn’t have been casted any better for this cute naive young inspiring actress character, except for one vital part, her singing just never got there for me.  She is supposed to be the savior of the show and the cast fully believes in her, but she never felt stronger enough for the leading lady she is supposed to represent.  Ehlinger is extremely talented and an absolute delight, but only for the first half of the play.  I hate critiquing in this area as I am not one to judge, but it’s worth noting her presence didn’t feel right as the leading lady in the show within the show.

Regardless, this is an ensemble cast with probably the most people I have seen on stage at one time.  It’s a true site to behold during the larger numbers of the musical.

1

The focal point also holds true for the set production as your attention will be focused on the countless beautiful tap-dancing legs onstage.  Some may know I adore lavish sets and big set pieces, yet I was still perfectly content with this shows overall set design.  Featured are mostly well-done large “painted” back drops and a rare moveable set until the latter half where larger “wow-factored” set pieces are presented.  It helps build the show consistently and never gets in the way of enjoyable dancing and singing.  Something can be said for its design as it establishes a tone of being a classic musical feel to combat with the over-the-top sets and productions we can see in shows of today.

42nd Street is one of the liveliest and brightest shows you’ll ever see on stage.  Benefiting from a mostly positive light hearted show, it’s just a good ole’ time.  Never dull or a bore.  42nd Street will have you cheering and smiling throughout and wont leave you in any awkward dark moments or deep conversations after the final curtain draw.  This is Broadway entertainment and after all, exactly what the show bills itself as.

42nd Street is playing at Segerstrom Center of the Arts in Costa Mesa until November 22nd.
