Second Trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Blasts Off

Guardians

The second trailer for the highly anticipated tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy, is here, and it’s glorious. Action packed, funny, and full of beautiful looking images, this trailer has it all. Check it out below.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector.

Exclusive Interview: Christopher Shyer from The Book of Mormon Musical

The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards® including Best Musical, will play a limited engagement at Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 13-25, 2014.

The Book of Mormon features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Parker and Stone are the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of the landmark animated series, South Park. Tony Award-winner Lopez is co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, Avenue Q. The musical is choreographed by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and is directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

cs1We had the exclusive opportunity to interview Christopher Shyer who plays the voice of the Missionary Training Center, Elder Price’s Dad, the famous Joseph Smith and the Mission President in The Book of Mormon Musical. Shyer also plays a surprise role that “you have to watch the show to find out who that character is.”

What are the differences between The Book of Mormon musical and other musicals you have done in the past?

This is the most irreverent project, musically speaking that I’ve ever been a part of. I think it’s one of the funnier shows that I’ve had the great fortune to be a part of. The show at times is very heartfelt, about a couple of young Mormon boys who are on their mission to Uganda.

You play various roles in the show, how do you prepare for these characters?

I get to play the founder of the Mormon Faith, Joseph Smith who found the golden plates and then translated them. I did some research on the actual person and watched the South Park episode, it felt almost like an infomercial for Mormonism. I love doing research, that’s a biggest part of why I love being an Actor. The other characters I get to play is Mormon President, which is in the later part of the show. I also play Elder Price’s Father and then I’m Missionary Training Center’s voice and then I play another character that I’m not allowed to say and not listed in the program. It’s considered a gag, this character shows up a few times.

What is it like to work with such a talented group and what is your favorite scene in the show?

The group is amazing. I’m the eldest of 47, but all of the Mormon boys, are fresh out of their University and College Programs. Most of the cast is from New York or LA, and for some this is the biggest show they have ever been a part of and they are excited to be a part of it. One of my favorite scene is playing the Mormon President in the 2nd Act and the Uganda villagers are putting on a a little pageant to tell us their understanding of what they understand of The Book of Mormon.

What advice would you tell someone that want’s to get into acting / theater?

A big part of being successful in this business is holding on to a sense of grace while there is a big dose of resilience. There is a lot of rejection in this business. You are constantly putting yourself out there to get the job and you’re not always the right person for the part. Keep a sense of humility about you while staying focused and remember why you wanted to do this in the first place.

Well Christopher, it has been a pleasure and I wish the best to you and your fellow cast members.

Here is Christopher’s Bio:

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Poster Released; New Trailer Coming Monday

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel Studios has unveiled a new poster for their new sci-fi film, Guardians of the Galaxy, which is set to open on August 1, 2014. The film, which sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding into the cosmos, follows a ragtag group of heroes who are forced to come together to stop a force that could destroy the entire universe. The film is a bit Star Wars in nature, and is one that is going to set the stage for bigger events in the Marvel Universe moving into the studio’s Phase 3 films. Mainly, a force that may be going toe-to-toe with The Avengers in The Avengers 3. A new trailer for the film is set to be released on Monday morning, on Facebook, at 1pm EST/10am PST, and will be proceeded by a live Q&A by stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and director James Gunn.

Guardians of the Galaxy has long been one of my favorite comics of the Marvel Universe, so to say the film is my most anticipated of the year is an understatement. I’m waiting on pins and needles to see this film, and the new poster above just shows me exactly why I love these characters: They’re just fun. There’s a larger than life, space opera feel to the team and their place in the MCU, and I can’t wait to watch the film unfold.

The film stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillian, Benecio del Toro, Michael Rooker, and Lee Pace, with the voice talents of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. The film, directed by James Gunn, is set to be released on August 1, 2014.

New Trailer for 'Interstellar' Is a Sight to Behold

The second trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new film, Interstellar, has just been released, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine. The newest trailer is incredibly beautiful, moving, and awe inspiring, just letting the images and dialogue speak for themselves instead of telling us everything about the film. Check it out below.

It looks so Spielberg in nature, but it has very key Nolan moments as well, and the whole thing is just incredible. This is easily one of my most anticipated films of the year, and I can’t wait to see how it comes together. But it definitely looks like one that is going to pull at our emotions by the time it’s over. What did you think of the trailer? Sound off in the usual place below!

Movie Review: 'Million Dollar Arm'

arm2Disney has a long-standing history of producing sports movies based on true stories. With a catalog that includes “Cool Runnings,” “Remember The Titans,” “The Rookie,” “Miracle” and “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” all of these films chronicle underdogs overcoming tremendous odds. Their newest offering, “Million Dollar Arm,” continues this tradition while also covering new ground. While most baseball movies cover stories about players or teams making a comeback or resurgence that seemed impossible, “Million Dollar Arm” follows complete outsiders to the game of baseball as they develop from beginners to big league contenders. It is a story that no one would have ever believed could come true.

After sports agent J.B. Bernstein fails to make any big signings with his independent firm, he comes up with an idea to look for new athletes in India while watching a game of cricket on television. In a country where baseball is basically unknown, what if he could find a cricket bowler and turn him into a professional pitcher? The idea could potentially attract a new crowd from a population of 1.1 billion people, bringing out competitors from a pool of untapped talent, creating a demand for merchandise and of course, generating more profit. With the financial backing of San Francisco Giants owner William Chang, J.B. decides to create a reality show in India called “The Million Dollar Arm.” The contestants would compete for who is the fastest and most accurate pitcher, with a chance to win $100,000 and the opportunity to train in the US. The deal with Mr. Chang also stipulates that within one year, the first and second place winners will qualify for a big league tryout. Enlisting the help of baseball scout Ray Poitevint, they travel all over India and watch thousands of contestants try (and usually fail) to make the next round of the contest. It is not until they visit an academy that they discover Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, two track and field athletes that are able to throw hard and accurately. After winning the contest, J.B. brings Rinku and Dinesh back to California to begin their training at USC with pitching coach Tom House, where they have to develop years of skill and experience in only a few months. Can they accomplish the impossible?

“Million Dollar Arm” stars Golden Globe Winner Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) as J.B. Bernstein, Suraj Sharma (“Life Of Pi”) as Rinku Singh and Maddur Mittal (“Slumdog Millionaire”) as Dinesh Patel. The film has a strong ensemble cast, including Aasif Mandvi as co-agent Ash Vasudevan; Lake Bell as Brenda; Alan Arkin as Ray Poitevint; Bill Baxton as Tom House; Pitobash as Amit; Darshan Jariwala as Vivek; and Tzi Ma as William Chang. The film was directed by Craig Gillespie (“Lars And The Real Girl”).

arm3WHAT WORKED: “Million Dollar Arm” has a very different feel from Disney’s previous sports films, simply because of the culture and location. I felt as though the film made a serious effort to be authentic and realistic. A majority of the dialogue spoken by the Indian characters is in Hindi, and like 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” the film does not shy away from giving an honest look at the poverty-stricken country. Both Rinku and Dinesh leave their homes and their families, a move that takes an emotional toll as they not only try to learn a game they have never played before, but also adapt to a culture completely unfamiliar to them in California. As an ex-baseball player, I also found that the training sequences and coaching methods displayed were very accurate. The drills may look ridiculous to some, but Disney clearly did their research and made sure these types of details were true to form. I also felt that the acting was overall very good and genuine. Lake Bell was particularly charming in her role as J.B.’s tenant and love interest, Brenda. Her outside view on the situation allows her to give an unbiased opinion, which helps motivate Rinku and Dinesh, while also making J.B. realize his faults. Another actor that stood out was Pitobash, who played the players’ enthusiastic translator Amit. His character came into play by accident, a man that J.B. meets in India that volunteers to help the contest because of his love for baseball. His comedic timing and willingness to help makes him standout in most scenes.

WHAT DID NOT WORK: While this may be an “issue” that is completely out of anyone’s control, J.B. Bernstein is not represented as a nice person in the film. Jon Hamm did a fine job of portraying him, but his character is self absorbed and controlling, putting business first and everything else second. This type of thinking does lead to some self discovery later down the road as J.B. realizes the reasons behind his failures, both on a personal and professional level. But it makes the audience feel a bit disconnected from the lead character. I did not feel myself rooting for his success. Rather I was rooting for Rinku and Dinesh’s success, and perhaps that was the point. The film also ends a bit abruptly, though it has a much different story to follow than the other Disney sports films. There is no rival to overcome, no final match or championship game to win. Just a tryout and the chance for Rinku and Dinesh to prove themselves. It left me wanting more, but I enjoyed the fact that the movie used real footage to end the film, as well as documented footage throughout the credits to show even more about the real people.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Although falling short of the sheer emotion and triumph displayed in some of Disney’s previous films like “Remember The Titans” and “Miracle,” “Million Dollar Arm” is another well done and likable film for the catalog. It has a big heart, and takes a risk in covering characters that are not American and speak no English (at first), which could be a limiting factor for families. But I think taking the grittier and more realistic approach lends to the movie’s unique factor. We get to watch these characters develop athletically, emotionally and personally. And J.B. Bernstein also has his own personal victory, realizing that there is more to life than just work. Although the movie centers around baseball, one does not need to be a fan to enjoy it.

Theatre Review: The Book of Mormon

mormon2

For a production that takes great pride in it’s shock value, The Book of Mormon is a far funnier and sweeter play than I was ever expecting.  Sure, the hype would have you believe that you’ll go to Hell just for watching, but behind the blasphemy is a genuinely engaging and even emotional story.  Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker (South Park) are experts at walking that fine line between grossing you out and making you care about what it is that is grossing you out.  But in all honesty, it’s really not even that offensive.

There’s really only one moment that might have gone too far, a musical number cursing God.  In context, it feels completely appropriate considering the situation these characters find themselves in.  However, the number just builds and builds to a point where you could feel the tension as so much of the audience was squirming behind the laughter.  Other than that sequence, this is a production no more shocking than your standard R-Rated comedy.  I suppose people could take offense at the religious backdrop of the story, but as a Mormon myself, I found the story to end up being more pro-faith than not.

Yes, they make fun of some of our beliefs, and even more specifically, the notion of blind faith.  What they don’t do is insult those beliefs.  It’s all played with what appears to be genuine respect for the church.  The story itself revolves around two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent to Africa for their mission.  One of them, Elder Price, is convinced that he is destined for something incredible, and plans to be one of the greatest missionaries ever.  The other one, Elder Cunningham, is a slovenly, goofy “follower” who is seemingly incapable of fending for himself and has a penchant for lying when under pressure. When they get to Africa, they find themselves trapped in the middle of a tribal war, bringing out sides of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham that they never knew were in them.

In telling this story, there are a great variety of musical numbers.  I have never been able to say this about a musical before, but I honestly loved each and every one of these songs.  Covering several musical genres, each number is masterfully written and performed.  This is a high energy show, beginning to end, and the cast gamely gives it their all.  David Larsen and Cody Jamison Strand play the two lead Elders with such conviction that they feel like real people as they are thrown into some ridiculously over-the-top situations.

While the musical numbers are great, I really must emphasize the great writing across the board.  There are genuinely funny jokes throughout, played with expert comic timing from a brilliant ensemble.  Whether it’s the African’s depiction of “text messaging,” the unbelievable role that frogs end up playing in the story, or the antics of the closeted gay missionary, the laughs are non-stop.  Beginning to end, this is one the most purely entertaining plays I’ve seen.

The production is amazing on the technical side as well.  They manage to depict the poverty and misery of this village while keeping it visually interesting, and never depressing.  The opening number is relatively minimalist, which makes it even more surprising when the world is opened up and we see just how much work went into designing everything.  They even create Hell itself for one sequence, creating a depth on stage that just seemed to envelop the ensemble.

I really can’t emphasize this production enough.  Whether religious or not, easily offended or not, there is no reason not to go into this with an open mind.  It subverted all of my expectations, and has deserved all the accolades it has received. Running at Segerstrom Center for the Arts through May 25, this is a show you won’t want to miss.

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.

A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Thor,” “Hamlet”) and starring Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “Elizabeth”), Lily James (“Downton Abbey”), Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham-Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”), “Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) and David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”). The screenplay is by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).

“Cinderella” will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 13, 2015.

MALEFICENT New Featurette and Movie Clip

“Maleficent,” the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty,” reveals the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora, only to later realize that the child may hold the key to peace in the land.

See Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning discuss the world of Maleficent in a brand new behind-the-scene featurette.

The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

“Maleficent” is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Michael Vieira, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay. “Maleficent” opens in U.S. theaters on May 30, 2014.

Princes Aurora pricks her finger on the spinning wheel and falls into a sleep-like death.

Disney Interactive & Harmonix Reveal "The Capsule" from Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved

Disney Interactive and Harmonix Music Systems are taking a fantastical interstellar journey in the upcoming “Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved” with the announcement of the game’s newest realm, “The Capsule.” Set in a modular space station orbiting around Earth, the latest realm will feature Elton John’s “Rocket Man” and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” as playable songs.

Previously announced realms “The Hollow” and “The Haven” have taken place in forest environments; “The Capsule” is the first to be set in space, introducing a new sensory experience for users that extends the vision and legacy of the original Fantasia film. At the center of “The Capsule” lives a lone astronaut monkey who is cut off from all forms of communication. What begins as a claustrophobic, deactivated space station, transforms into a fully-powered, living machine as players perform “In Your Eyes” and “Rocket Man.” These songs were originally announced at PAX East last month.

“Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved” is a breakthrough musical motion video game inspired by Disney’s classic animated film “Fantasia,” and will be available for Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Kinect for Xbox 360 in fall 2014. Featuring over 30 tracks – including contemporary hits, classic rock, classical music, and more – “Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved” transports players to a breathtaking world where music and magic combine to transform extraordinary interactive landscapes in entirely new and creative ways.

“Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved” will be available in fall 2014 and is currently not rated by the ESRB.
