Disney’s First Cruise Ship, Disney Magic, Offers Guests Brand-New Experiences and Reimagined Spaces

There’s an extra dose of magic coming aboard the Disney Magic, when the Disney Cruise Line vessel relaunches with new spaces, reimagined areas and exciting additions for the whole family. Guests will experience new adventures from stem to stern throughout their journey on the cruise ship that set the standard for oceangoing majesty and family fun.

Atrium LobbyFrom a new grand atrium lobby and a children’s area of “super hero” proportions to a three-story water thrill slide and a spa to stimulate the “Senses,” there are plenty of new and magical surprises in store for cruise guests. The ship features fun new experiences with Marvel characters – the first time Super Hero icons from the Marvel Universe have been introduced on a Disney Cruise Line ship.

“We have always been committed to reinvesting in our fleet and continuously making shipboard enhancements that elevate the guest experience,” said Karl L. Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “What we’re doing with the Disney Magic is yet another step forward in our commitment to delivering the absolute best family vacations at sea.”

“Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do,” says Joe Lanzisero, senior creative vice president for Walt Disney Imagineering. “Walt Disney was a master storyteller and knew how to engage people’s emotions into stories. Our job is to take what we learned from Walt and apply it to the experiences on board our ships.”

Here are some highlights of new “magic” in store for guests aboard the Disney Magic after the “reimagineering” transformation of the ship that takes place during dry dock Sept. 7-Oct. 10, 2013 in Cadiz, Spain:

A Grand First Impression

When guests board the Disney Magic, they enter the grand atrium lobby that is redesigned to be “elegant art deco, inspired by elements of the sea,” according to Lanzisero.

“Filmmaking is the history of our company and in film the ‘establishing shot’ sets the scene,” he says. “This is the same with the atrium, as we begin telling our story.”

The spacious and spectacular three-deck lobby features hand-tufted, custom-made carpet that dazzles in a palette of vibrant coral, blue and aquamarine seashell-inspired designs. The art deco atrium chandelier is inspired by rays of the sun and the glisten of the surface of the ocean. Opulent furnishings, a grand piano and giant portholes recall the days of early 20th century ocean liners.

The lobby’s centerpiece is a cold-cast bronze statue of “Helmsman Mickey,” ever-smiling and keeping watch as guests stroll past. The famed statue, which has stood in the atrium since the ship was launched, will receive a special makeover bringing new luster to its golden hue.

dcl1Disney, Disney-Pixar & Marvel Characters Join the Fun

Disney’s Oceaneer Club, open to 3- to 12-year-old children, is a completely re-imagined area that transports children to the magical realms of brave super heroes, adventuresome toys, fanciful fairies and Mickey Mouse’s club for creativity and fun.

With Marvel now a part of the Walt Disney Company family, this will mark the first time the Super Hero icons of Marvel have been introduced on a Disney Cruise Line ship. Marvel and Walt Disney Imagineers have created a new space for children to enter into the Marvel Universe.

Marvel’s The Avengers will make their presence known in an epic way aboard the Disney Magic, with Marvel’s Avengers Academy calling Disney’s Oceaneer Club its new seaward home. Young crime-fighters will be transported to a high-tech command post used by The Avengers for special missions and operations training.

Throughout the base, displays featuring some of the equipment that helps to make The Avengers the earth’s mightiest heroes – Iron Man’s suit of armor, Captain America’s shield and Thor’s hammer — inspire super hero “recruits” through their academy missions. Avengers Academy is a multi-day, immersive entertainment experience where children interact with Marvel characters and unleash their inner super heroes.

Adjacent to Marvel’s Avengers Academy is Andy’s Room, where stars of the Disney-Pixar “Toy Story” trilogy come to life in a multi-level space. Stocked with all of Andy’s favorite toys, the room features a larger-than-life Mr. Potato Head, a giant version of the lovable piggy bank, Hamm, and a Slinky Dog slide.

Next door is Pixie Hollow, the enchanted land of Tinker Bell and her fairy friends. In this magical forest setting, Tinker Bell’s teapot house serves as a costume closet and children can make crafts while sitting on stools shaped like mushrooms and acorns.

In Disney’s Oceaneer Club guests will find the Mickey Mouse Club, another new children’s area. Inside a room splashed with Mickey’s signature colors of red, yellow and black, kids can create crafts and play games on ear-shaped tables. The club also features Goofy Gears, an oversized activity where kids play with wacky, magnetic spinning gears.

Disney Dining With an Extra Dash of Pixie Dust

New restaurants and new technology are on the menu for the restaurants aboard Disney Magic.

Animator’s Palate, one of the most popular restaurants on the Disney ships, is updated with all-new, animation-adorned walls and larger high-definition flat-screens to provide the best views of the animation magic that takes place all around.

A heaping helping of entertainment is served up during the brand-new “Drawn to Magic” experience at Animator’s Palate. Throughout this deliciously fresh take on Disney Cruise Line’s much beloved classic dinner celebration, the restaurant’s black and white “blank canvas” explodes into full color as favorite Disney and Disney-Pixar characters, such as Rapunzel from “Tangled” and Remy from “Ratatouille,” come to life right before guests’ eyes.

On every Disney Magic cruise, guests will have an opportunity to experience the tremendously popular “Animation Magic” dinner show that celebrates the magic of Disney animation and allows families to create and participate in an innovative way. First unveiled on the Disney Fantasy, “Animation Magic” invites guests to create their own characters that magically spring to life, become fully animated and join the show onscreen.

The vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro creates an energetic atmosphere in Carioca’s, a new restaurant named after Donald Duck’s parrot pal in “The Three Caballeros,” Jose Carioca. Festooned with lighted lanterns, the restaurant is designed to be “fun by day, elegant by night,” says Lanzisero.

During the day, there’s a festival theme and, when night falls, the atmosphere transforms into an after-hours scene of Rio de Janiero, with city-side windows softly illuminated and lanterns flickering overhead. Carioca’s replaces Parrot Cay restaurant, currently on the Disney Magic.

Another new restaurant to the Disney Magic is Cabanas, a casual dining experience with food and beverage stations during daytime hours and a table-service restaurant during dinner. The Australian setting of the Disney-Pixar animated classic “Finding Nemo” inspires the décor with hints of the film’s fishy and feathered friends throughout the restaurant.

Cabanas, which replaces the current Topsider Buffet, also is expanding. More inside space is being added, increasing the total square-footage of air-conditioned area by nearly 3,400 square feet to more than 9,460 square feet and a total of 455 seats.

Disney Cruise Line’s popular Palo restaurant for adults receives a makeover with stylish fixtures, glass artwork and new stone floors. Red and white striped poles reminiscent of those found throughout the canals in Venice are a design feature.

dcl2Putting more “room” in staterooms

Disney Cruise Line knows that traveling families always need more space, so features are included in each room to provide more usable space. Bed frames are elevated to provide storage space underneath. The bathrooms include the split-bath feature that Disney introduced to the cruise industry — providing even greater convenience to guests.

Sprint paints a bright future with 4G LTE

sprint-4g-lte_logo

The tech@Socalthrills team was invited to, and attended a Sprint event on April 24 to discuss their future with 4G LTE technology.

Among the panelists were John Batter, CEO of M-GO, a new digital content provider; Juan Reyes, CTO of BluFocus, a Quality Assurance and Certification Facility which specializes in entertainment content and technologies; Ajay Shah, CEO of Orange County based TV Plus; Bob Gold of Bob Gold & Associates; Laura Martin of Needham & Co.; and Ken Raaf and Kim Wade from Sprint.

Sprint and company discussed the many changes surrounding the entertainment space over the last several years, including the major shift consumers are having to mobile and tablet content consumption, along with the ways that Sprint’s new technology roll outs will be there to take advantage. Sprint detailed a bit of their Network Vision progress, including what they described as the “pardon our dust” phase, and they say that major improvements to their 4G LTE as well as their 3G networks are coming within the next 90 days or so.

We were able to get a bit of hands on time with the HTC One on Sprint’s 4G LTE network, and a speed test showed a not too shabby download speed of about 7 Mbps in downtown LA. This was in contrast to the basically non-existent coverage of AT&T in the same building.

What say you? Are you ready to join the Now Network now that their 4G network is ready to compete?

2013 Newport Beach Film Festival Movie Review: Rushlights

72824_365940350182693_1848692328_nWhile I can appreciate first-time filmmakers Antoni Stutz’s attempt at a twisty modern noir, Rushlights reeks of rookie mistakes, both in terms of storytelling and production.  There is a good idea at the heart of the film.  Haley Webb (Final Destination) plays Sarah, a woman who finds herself in over her head after being convinced by her new boyfriend to impersonate her dead roommate in order to claim an inheritance.  Unfortunately, this already convoluted setup lends itself to an unneccessarily complicated plot filled with twists that don’t naturally flow out of the story.

To make matters worse, Stutz’s direction is amatuerish, to put it politely.  The editing is often confusing, crosscutting between elements of the story in a way that makes it very difficult to follow what is happening.  In addition, the soundwork is sloppy, with the sound effects often overpowering the dialogue.  There is very little in the mix that sounds natural.  The film especially suffers when a sound cue is supposed to provide a story point, such as when a character hotwires a car.  This person gets in the car, you hear some sort of quick electrical sounds and the character is driving off.  It took me a moment to realize what had just happened, and it is these sort of mistakes that can make the film feel like a chore to sit through.

I wish I could say that the acting made up for the rest of the problems, but everybody involved appears to be phoning in their parts.  There is no chemistry between the leads, and the random cutaways to their sex life does nothing to validate the relationship.  With a cast that includes Beau Bridges, Josh Henderson and Aidan Quinn, I was really expecting more out of this film.  Bridges fares the best, appearing to have some fun in his role as the town sherrif, but his work just isn’t enough to salvage the film.

The sort of film that features characters explaining the plot to each other as it’s happening, this exposition heavy mess of a story could have been improved with a rewrite or two.  The setting of the film, Tremo, TX, is an interesting location.  This dirty, backroad town feels like it could be home to any number of twisty characters and stories.  As the story evolves, things get more and more convoluted, but always without focus.  For a first time feature, it’s an admirable effort in need of focus.

Jabra Vox Headphones Review

51w8tOgEBeL._SL1114_In an age of oversized headphones with garish logos on them, the Jabra Vox in ear headphones with in-line mic are a breath of fresh air.

Design:
Black with red accents, the Jabra Vox are a 2013 red dot design award winner. The buds themselves are curved and fit the contours of our outer ear very well while the EarGels™ fit very snuggly and comfortably in our ears. The cord is a black tangle resistant rubber with a reinforced Y where the cord converges. The 3.5mm plug is a right angle design with a thin amount of insulation so they fit all of the cases we tested without issue. SnagIt™ magnets keep the right and left ear buds from tangling and make unwinding them a cinch. It is obvious Jabra paid attention to details when they made these because they exhibit a truly thoughtful design. The in-line controls are curved and pleasing to the touch, however during our review here the buttons simply wouldn’t respond unless you clicked a few times or in just the right spot; a disappointing note on an otherwise stellar design.

41Kh5hV7UdLSound Quality:
Overall, the buds performed well. High and midrange tones were clear and crisp in each of our tests. Low end tones were sometimes muddy and overwhelming in absence of an equalizer. The in-line microphone worked pretty well, though we were told on a few occasions that we sounded tinny. The Jabra Vox comes with an activation code for the Jabra Sound App, specially designed to work with Jabra’s different lines of headphones. The app integrates Dolby Digital Plus sound along with a graphic equalizer to help you customize your sound according to the audio source. The application itself worked reasonably well, though it lacked some of the intelligent design of the stock players we tested it against.

Conclusion:
For a pair of sub-$100 earbuds, the Jabra Vox are definitely a great choice. They offer intelligent design, comfort, and above average sound quality for an affordable price.

Pros:
Stylish & compact
Snug fit reduces exterior noise
Tangle resistant cord

Cons:
Finicky controls
Low end tones were sometimes muddy

Review: Tiffen Dfx 3.0 Video/Film Plug-in

dfxboxTiffen is a well known name in the film and video world by almost everyone working in the industry. Tiffen is mostly known for their lens filters and other equipment such as Steadicam. However, beyond their camera equipment, they also have a software division that has peaked interest in the post-production world. There are many different software that Tiffen offers such as plug-ins and standalone software. For this review, I’ll be focusing on Tiffen’s Dfx for Video/Film software.

If you’re trying out Tiffen Dfx for the very first time, it’ll be handy to have the user guide open. You can do this by pressing F1 (or fn+F1 on a Mac) on your keyboard. I found myself going to this guide when I was unsure what a plug-in or affect did.

The Tiffen Dfx software has a lot to offer to many people but with it’s price point of $599 it probably wont be the first choice for many. There are other similar softwares on the market that are much cheaper such as CoreMelt, FxFactory, Technicolor CineStyle.

Luckily, there is a 15 day free trial for Tiffen Dfx so you actually play with the software and decide it’ll be something to add to your toolkit.

Pros:
• Very simple and easy to use
• I like how you can make simple changes in the inspector in FCPX or launch the Dfx
editor to fine tune the effects
• The presets in the Dfx editor are nice as well because I can simply place them on the
still image of the clip and get an idea of how it’ll look on the clip while making small
adjustments to make it my own.
• The side by side, vertical split, and horizontal split comparisons in the Dfx editor are a
nice touch since I can easily compare the before and after of the effect applied
• There are a lot of presets to choose from so if you have an idea in your head of what
you want it to look like, there is probably a preset for it or one that is fairly close and you can adjust it. To add to this, you can also click on different parameters to see the different variations for the possible outcome for your clip
• You can favor presets, so if you like a certain preset or use it a lot, you can favorite it so it’s easier to find the next time you need to use it.
• There is a 414 page user guide with images and it’s simple to get to with a keyboard short cut.
• The ability to use dual monitors and have your presets and variations on one display and your viewer and parameters on the other.
• There are seven groups of effects broken down into easy-to-understand categories
• I loved the ability to work with Gobo and Lights. It’s easy to add gobos to your clips
and the amount of gobos to choose from is outstanding. With dfx i no longer need to create a gobo in Photoshop and place it in FCP, I just have to add the affect to my clip(s) and adjust the gobo in Dfx.
• Tiffen Dfx package are several image repair tools, including DeBand, DeBlock and DeNoise.

Cons:
• Doesn’t use meta data so it has to render each time you make a change
• Cannot play or scrub the clip in Dfx while fine tuning the effects, it’s a still image so I
have to save the change then switch back to FCPX to see how the effect looks on the entire clip. Other plug-in softwares do actually allow you to scrub the clip to see how the effect works with entire clip.
• You can only select two parameters at a time to see different variations. It would be nice to be able to click at least three parameters.
• The gear at the top left means done, which I thought was a settings menu and I’m sure first time users will think this as well.
• The Price is hefty at $599 however if gets you the installer for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut and Motion and Avid.

Blu-Ray Review: Wings of Life

wingThe previous Disneynature films tended to focus on the most exotic locations and epic wildlife the world has to offer.  With Wings of Life, they have taken a slightly different approach, toning down the epic for something a little more intimate, but just as beautiful.  Rather than focus on a single animal group (lions, chimpanzees), this film takes the viewer into the world of butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, bats and flowers, focusing on the interconnectedness of these creatures and the links between them that make up part of the great invisible design of life.

As always with Disneynature, the film is a technical marvel, utilizing multiple cameras with varying frame rates to capture the minute details of every activity on display.  For example, a droplet of water becomes a thing of sheer beauty, reflecting the image of the flower it trickles down.  The filmmakers must have an almost inhuman amount of patience to capture the images on display, having to sit and wait for these beautiful moments of routine to present themselves.

While the film is a gorgeous accomplishment, I have to admit that it isn’t quite as captivating as there other works, probably due to a complete lack of narrative.  Meryl Streep narrates the film in what I’m sure is meant to sound like a soothing tone, but it almost comes across as if she is just bored, keeping things too low key.  At the beginning of the film, she identifies herself as a flower who is going to explore the creatures named above from her perspective.  It works as a way of bringing the narrator into the film, but there isn’t a true purpose to this angle.  The film would have worked just as well if she had simply narrated the film as is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VRvhFLRCk0

Of course, as the film progresses, we learn about the dangers humanity presents to the creatures we have just witnessed.  The film does get a tad manipulative, and rather than just focusing on the majesty of the world we have just seen, tries to shoehorn in a message.  I suppose that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it did feel a little forced.

Unfortunately, there are no extra features on the recently released Blu-Ray and DVD combo pack beyond a look at the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund and a quick preview of what there next film, Bears.  I would have liked to see the methods they utilized in order to capture some of these images, but for some reason they left the behind-the-scenes footage out this round.

This one’s a mixed bag for me.  It’s visually stunning as expected, but all rather dull.  It was a neat idea, trying to get away from some of the more extreme wildlife and show us a sampling of the world that secretly exists right under our noses, but they didn’t entirely pull it off this round.  Still, it’s effective enough for what it is.  This is an unusual but worthy entry into the Disneynature family.
