Enemy at the Gates
Synopsis: The year is 1942 and the Nazis are cutting a deadly swath through Russia. Under the leadership of Kruschev (Bob Hoskins), the citizens of Stalingrad are mounting a brave resistance, spurred by the exploits of their local hero, Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law).   An expert sniper, Vassili’s deeds have become legendary – thanks to propaganda produced by Vassili’s best friend, a political officer named Danilov (Joseph Fiennes).  To stop Vassili, the Germans dispatch their best sniper, Major Konig (Ed Harris), to Stalingrad. When Vassili and Danilov both fall in love with a beautiful soldier (Rachel Weisz), As the city burns, Vassili and Konig begin a cunning game of cat and mouse, waging a private war for courage, honor and country.

Enemy at the Gates arrives on Blu-ray with only a few extras. Through the Crosshairs plays as a very basic making-of piece where cast and crew recount the plot, discuss the characters, speak of the themes, and recount the history of the battle itself. Inside ‘Enemy at the Gates’ features cast and crew discussing their preparations for the roles, including learning the history of the battle and firing their weapons. They also speak further on the themes, the making of the film, casting, working together, their favorite scenes, and more. Changing Lanes
Synopsis: Late for court, an attorney weaves in and out of traffic. In a different lane, a father whose right to see his children rests on getting to court on time.   A minor accident will turn these two strangers into beasts.

As a sleeper that suddenly broke out to become one of 2002’s best films, Changing Lanes deserves a look from those who’ve forgotten it existed in the first place. They will see this sensational Blu-ray release and wonder where this evocative, edge of your seat experience has been their entire cinematic life. Others with fond memories or an actual copy of the DVD will have to ask themselves if a slightly improved picture and better sound suffices when it comes to the decision on a double dip. Granted, any advance in technology should be embraced, especially when weighed against the product profiting from it. Paramount’s shift over to Blu-ray gives the film added weigh.

Special Features:
Commentary by director Roger Michell

Paycheck_BRD_3D.jpg

Paycheck
Synopsis: In a futuristic but familiar world, a high-tech engineer whose memory has been partially erased must use a group of unrelated objects, including a wire, a ticket stub and a bus token as clues to discover the truth about his previous identity, and collect a paycheck he had been awaiting.   Based on the short story by science fiction author Phillip K. Dick.

Paycheck is a clever and very well put together mystery that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. Michael must try to figure out how he ended up wtih 20 items in the envelope that he doesn’t recognize, and more importantly, he must learn when to use them at the opportune moment, to save his life. Despite a lack of fondness for Ben Affleck’s acting, he delivers a nice performance, as do Eckhardt and Thurman. Paul Giamatti and Colm Feore are also great in supporting roles. Paycheck is a good, entertaining thiller that will keep you thinking.

Special Blu-ray Features:
Commentary: Commentary by Director John Woo
Commentary: Commentary by Screenwriter Dean Georgaris
Featurette: Paycheck
Featurette: Tempting Fate:

Machinist_BRD_3D.jpg

The Machinist
Synopsis: In this psychological thriller an industrial worker hasn’t slept in a year and is living a nightmare where cryptic notes appear and he has visions of a co-worker no one else can see.   Are these mysteries part of a plot to drive him mad?   Or, has fatigue simply robbed him of reason?

The Machinist represents pure, relatable, and terrifying Horror at its finest, the film punctuated by one of Christian Bale’s great dramatic performance. It manages to get everything absolutely right, from the look of the film and the characters to the subdued yet effective score. With neither a wasted shot nor and extraneous line of dialogue, The Machinist represents subtle yet incredibly effective Horror filmmaking at its peak. Paramount’s Blu-ray release of The Machinist isn’t quite as captivating as the film, but it gets the job done in every area. Featuring a strong video presentation, a lossless soundtrack that reflects the subdued nature of the mix, and a fascinating array of supplements, fans and newcomers alike should be satisfied with this release. The Machinist comes highly recommended.

Special Features:
Audio Commentary by Director Brad Anderson
Manifesting the Machinist
The Machinist:  Hiding in Plain Sight
The Machinist:  Breaking The Rules

VALKYRIE on DVD & Blu-ray!

Synopsis
“Tom Cruise gives one of the best performances of his career” (Jeffrey Lyons, NBC/Reel Talk) in this action-packed film from the director of The Usual Suspects and X-Men. Based on the incredible true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and his ingenious assassination plot targeting Adolf Hitler, this engrossing thriller reenacts the daring operation to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Co-starring Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and Eddie Izzard, Valkyrie delivers gripping suspense and pulse-pounding excitement from start to finish.

The remarkable yet seldom told true story of the German Resistance’s attempted coup and assassination of Adolf Hitler reveals itself when Valkyrie is released on Blu-ray Disc and Special Edition DVD with Digital Copy on May 19th from MGM Home Entertainment.  Set in Nazi Germany, Valkyrie chronicles the daring and ingenious “July 20 plot” to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known.  Oscar-nominee Tom Cruise* (Mission Impossible, Minority Report) stars as the loyal German nationalist Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the mastermind behind the plot to kill Hitler and overthrow his fascist regime.

Convinced the Nazi leader must die at all costs, Stauffenberg joins with a group of similarly disillusioned officers and civilians whose like minds come together for a common purpose in the face of incredible odds.  Directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects), Valkyrie boasts “…a top-notch international cast…” (Entertainment Weekly) including Academy Award-nominees Kenneth Branagh** (Hamlet, Henry V), Tom Wilkinson*** (Michael Clayton, In The Bedroom) and Terence Stamp (Get Smart; The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert), as well as Bill Nighy (The Constant Gardener, Love Actually) and Eddie Izzard (Ocean’s Thirteen, “The Riches”).

For its theatrical debut, Valkyrie was one of the biggest grossing box office adult movies of the past holiday season.

With over three hours of special features, the Valkyrie Blu-ray Disc includes commentary by director Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more.

MGM/Fox’s Blu-ray of Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie looks sharp and detailed in HD, with crisp aerial shots of staff cars winding their way through the woods to the scene of the assassination, Wolf’s Lair. The battle scene uses real aircraft and thus avoids CGI cartoon effects, all for the better.

Valkyrie is a very compelling story from history, the acting is top-notch, and the obsessive attention to detail brought to the film should have sailed it through. But the rushed set-up of the story and characters makes the pacing feel haphazard. It’s still quite enjoyable after some historical research – especially after viewing the included and very impressive documentary. Still, this is an intriguing story, and the total Blu-ray package for Valkyrie hits more than it misses.

Blu-ray Disc Specs
Valkyrie Blu-ray Disc will be presented in widescreen format with English 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio; Spanish & French 5.1 Dolby Digital; and Spanish, French, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin & Brazilian Portuguese subtitles.  Bonus features include:

LABOU on DVD

Synopsis:
Three unlikely friends set out on a journey to find the dreaded ghost of Captain LeRouge whose treasure-laden ship was lost in the Louisiana bayou over two hundred years ago.  What they find is an adventure beyond their wildest imagination and the magical swamp creature “Labou” whose whistles are rumored to be the original inspiration for jazz.  With the help of Labou, the kids race to stay one step ahead of two crazy oil moguls, but can they find the long lost treasure and save the swamps before it’s too late?

Legend has it the famed pirate, Captain LeRouge haunts the Louisiana bayou where his treasure-filled ship went down after it was struck by a hurricane.  Embarking on the journey of a lifetime, three friends come together to discover that some legends are true in the action-adventure fantasy Labou, arriving on DVD from MGM Home Entertainment.  From the creative minds known best for their behind-the-scenes work in Disney’s The Haunted Mansion, The Country Bears, Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed and more, Labou is about the camaraderie of three children in search of a ghost pirate and his long lost treasure.  Eager to get back at the school bully, feisty Emily and the new kid, Gavin challenge Toddster to explore the eerie and murky Louisiana swamps.  Lost in the bayou after being chased by the ghost of Captain LeRouge, the kids stumble across a lovable little creature named Labou whose home is about to be destroyed by two money hungry oil tycoons.  Determined to save the swamps and their new found friend, they devise a plan and enlist the help of the legendary ghost pirate to rid the wetlands of its imposters once and for all.

Voted as “Best Feature” at the 10th Annual Brooklyn Academy of Music Kids Film Festival in New York, Labou offers positive life lessons about teamwork, friendship and good versus evil through captivating music, inspiring characters and high-octance action that will excite kids of all ages.

Special Features:
The Labou DVD is presented in widescreen (1.85:1) format with English 5.1 Dolby Surround sound and English subtitles.  Bonus features include:

• Audio commentary with director and writer Greg Aronowitz, producer Sheri Bryant and actor Chris Violette
• Building Labou
• The Casting Process
• The Making of Labou: Part One and Part Two
• The Music of Labou
• Special Effects
• New Orleans: Points of Interest

The Special Features portion of Labou (especially The Making Of Labou, Parts 1 & 2) is unusually interesting. What began as a low-budget film ended up looking like a far more sophisticated one, and the creativity of Greg Aronowitz and his partner Sheri Bryant and all of their helpers in creating a swamp where there was none, the illusion of a ship hurtling itself across the sky against the background of the moon, and the intriguing animatronics used to create the Labou are absolutely amazing! The entire family can enjoy Labou together, along with the sinister feel of alligators and 12-foot poisonous snakes! They can laugh at the many one-liner jokes in this action-packed film knowing that there are still people who care about the Earth!

The bonus featurettes are fun, fascinating and informative, and also well worth watching!

2009 Taste of Anaheim Coverage

On Thursday May 14th, the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce held their 14th annual Taste of Anaheim at the Shops at the Anaheim GardenWalk.  This was a new venue for the festival as it was previously held in the parking lot at Angel’s Stadium and the Grove of Anaheim.  Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, but who wouldn’t with great food, drinks and live entertainment.

No matter where it was held though, this was going to be a better location than previous years; however it’s still the GardenWalk.  In case you are unaware of this newer mall, the GardenWalk started off with many hardships due to multiple delays in development and lack of tenants.  By the time this outdoor mall got off the drawing boards the economic crisis began therefore making it impossible to fill in the store fronts.

Before I end up giving a full review of the GardenWalk, let me just state that there are a few nice gems like the movie theater with a 21+ section, a wine bar, multiple nice fine dining locations, along with a bowling and entertainment center.  With that being said, it still needs a few more shops to open and some word of mouth before it becomes a place to really consider visiting unless you’re very local. This event will definitely help the GardenWalk as there were many people there that can now spread the word about the place.

As for the Taste of Anaheim, there was some excellent food from many restaurants from around the city, and a few in some cities around the area.  I noticed a great amount of seafood though.  This wasn’t a problem though as it all tasted quite good.  Probably my favorite seafood dish was some white tuna sushi from the Geisha House in Santa Ana.  I can’t even describe how great it was, but it could have just been it was the first thing I ate almost all day! Nonetheless, I went back for seconds.

Some of the restaurants in attendance were Mr. Stox, Anaheim White House, Ralph Brenan’s Jazz Kitchen, Ruth Chris Steakhouse, Alcatraz Brewing Company, Oggi’s Brewing Company, and many more.  One note worth mentioning was that Disney talked about Club 33 (A hidden membership only restaurant in Disneyland Park), Catal, Naples, Napa Rose, and Blue Bayou being in attendance except none were there.  What happened? Either way Disney still had a few restaurants handing out samples. The set-up is nothing special. All that is there, and was expected, are a bunch of booths with different companies and restaurants behind them with an added stage for entertainment.   The only act worth noting was Eli Mattson, which was the runner up on America’s Got Talent Finalist.  I’ll be honest, WHO? Yeah I have no idea who that is.  He was fine, but not my cup of tea.  In fact, I think he kind of slowed things down from the other performers.  Although, there were still quite a few people sitting down enjoying his music.

The whole event was overall very enjoyable and all the visitors seemed to have a very positive vibe. Everyone seemed mellow and was just enjoying themselves while having a bunch of free food, after a ticket fee of course. Why am I telling all of you this though? Watch the video. Just don’t miss next years.

Movie Review: "Angels and Demons"

Angels and Demons sees the return of Tom Hanks as symbologist, Robert Langdon, and Ron Howard distorting another Dan Brown novel. In their first effort, The Da Vinci Code, they turned Dan Brown’s thrilling mystery into one of the most boring two and a half hours of my life. More concerned with retelling the complex narrative, they completely botched recreating the thrilling mystery, which made the book compelling. Nevertheless, Brown fans and those intrigued by the controversial depiction of the Catholic Church, showed up in droves for a great disappointment. Angels and Demons does not come with nearly the same amount of hype and controversy, but what it lacks in buzz, it makes up for with intense action.

The film wastes no time with introductions and launches right into the heart of the action. We witness the first successful creation of anti-matter at a CERN laboratory in Geneva. For non-physicists, anti-matter is the ying to matter’s yang and if they were to meet the result would be an incredible explosion of energy. A canister of anti-matter is allegedly stolen by a secret society, known as the Illuminati and is then used as a time bomb that threatens to destroy the Vatican. This occurs during the election of a new Pope and the four leading candidates, the preferiti, are kidnapped by the Illuminati. Robert Langdon, an expert on the Illuminati, is brought in to track down the group, save the preferiti and the Vatican all before it is too late.

Robert Langdon attempts to do for symbology what Indiana Jones did for archaeology, but does so with mixed results. The book’s mystery and suspense is wrapped up in Langdon’s ability to solve these puzzles, left for him centuries ago by history’s most influential figures. However in the film, the mystery never takes long to solve and we are quickly sped through the process, leaving us wanting more. What brings the film to life is the eminent doom presented at the film’s opening. The film follows the old Hitchcock philosophy that it is better to let the audience know there is a bomb in the room and watch in suspense, than to keep them in the dark and let the explosion give them a brief shock. Amidst this suspenseful mystery, the film keeps a quick action packed pace that refuses to let up until the end. The film fails to add anything new to its source material, but definitely provides for some summertime movie fun.

WAYNE’S WORLD
Synopsis: Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name, Wayne’s World is a wacky, irreverent pop-culture comedy about the adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey).   From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere).   Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra. Director Penelope Spheeris, Myers and Carvey hang a lot of silly, but funny, jokes on this thin plot, and the energy of the cast—as well as the wild pop-culture references—make Wayne’s World a cut above the average Saturday Night Live spin-off movie.

Wayne’s World debuts on Blu-ray with a decent but at times uninspired 1080p, 1.78:1-framed transfer that generally passes for average-at-best high definition material. Detail is adequate, but nothing ever stands out as too terribly eye-catching. Colors are decent if not a bit faded in appearance, particularly during the film’s darker segments that tend to obscure detail, be it in clothing or the objects scattered around the “Wayne’s World” set. However, the transfer suddenly reveals more in the way of color and detail during some later segments of the film, noticeably during a sequence at a garage in chapter four.

Special Features:
Commentary with Director Penelope Spheeris
Extreme Close-Up

WAYNE’S WORLD 2
Synopsis: The success of their TV show allows Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) to finally move out of their parents’ homes, but now they have to figure out what to do with their lives. Wayne’s girlfriend, up-and-coming rock star Cassandra (Tia Carrere), is enjoying a career boost thanks to her new manager Bobby Cohn (Christopher Walker), but Garth thinks that Bobby is more interested in her body than her place on the charts. Meanwhile, Wayne is visited in a dream by the late Jim Morrison (Michael A. Nickles), who convinces him to promote a massive rock festival, “Waynestock,” featuring Aerosmith as headliners.   Garth, on the other hand, is finally relieved of his pesky virginity by femme fatale Honey Hornee (Kim Basinger), though it turns out that Honey has a hidden agenda.   Drew Barrymore, Harry Shearer, and Charlton Heston play cameo roles in Wayne’s World 2, and Jay Leno, Rip Taylor, and Todd Rundgren appear as themselves.

Wayne’s World 2 comes to Blu-ray with a decent Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. From the very first notes over the opening credits, a palpable difference between this soundtrack and that of its predecessor is noticeable, this one heftier and more robust, with a greater sense of warmth and space to it.

MAJOR LEAGUE
Synopsis: She’s beautiful, smart, goal-oriented, and she just inherited the Cleveland Indians.  Unfortunately, she wants to move the franchise to Miami, and a losing season is her only ticket to Florida.   So she signs the wildest gang of screwballs that ever spit tobacco. They’re handsome, but they’re hopeless! Her catcher (Tom Berenger) is a washed-up womanizer who struck out in life.   Her ace pitcher (Charlie Sheen) is a punked-out crazy who struck out with the law. And her third baseman (L.A. Law’s Corbin Bernsen) is more concerned fielding endorsements than grounders.  Throw in a busload of other misfits and you’ve got yourself a hilarious line-up that’s destined for disaster! Or is it?

This Blu-ray edition of Major League makes the call to the bullpen and sends in a fine selection of bonus materials.

Commentary by Writer/Director David S. Ward and producer Chris Chesser

BLACK SHEEP
Synopsis: Mike Donnelly (Chris Farley) is dedicated to helping his big brother Al (Tim Matheson) win the race for Washington State governor, he turns every opportunity for votes into an embarrassing disaster.   Campaign aide and super slacker Steve Dodds (David Spade) volunteers to baby-sit Mike. Big mistake! When Mike discovers that the incumbent governor is a crook, he dives headfirst into a whole new level of well-intended destruction.   Chris Farley and David Spade, the stars of Tommy Boy, once again show why they are “the comedy team of the ’90s!” (Leo Quinones, KIIS-FM). Directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World) and costarring Gary Busey, Black Sheep is “a crowd-pleaser directed with maximum energy!” (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Featuring an electrifying performance by super Seattle band Mudhoney!

Paramount’s Blu-ray release of Black Sheep delivers surprisingly good results. Presented in 1080p high definition and framed inside 1.78:1 window, the transfer never misses a beat, remaining lively and natural throughout. The transfer reveals above-average levels of detail in most every shot. Bright, outdoor scenes fare extraordinarily well, as the texture of the street pavement, tree trunks, the political banners and signs, clothing, and all sorts of objects are rendered nicely and appear natural and lifelike. This Blu-ray release of Black Sheep offers absolutely no extra content.

WITHOUT A PADDLE
Synopsis:Three childhood friends go into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure.  They take a canoe upriver and everything that can go wrong, does.  Hunted by two backwoods farmers, they encounter death-defying rapids, tree-hugging hippie chicks and a crazy old mountain man played by Burt Reynolds.

The original Without a Paddle boasts a nice trio of comedy actors with Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, and Dax Shepard. In an offbeat comedy movie like this, having some star power certainly helps add some meat to the entertainment. Known talent separates Without a Paddle with the follow up, Nature’s Calling, which had a much less familiar cast, with a very similar storyline. Though neither movie is a classic, there are some laughs if you are in a lighthearted Friday night mood.

Special Features:
Commentary by Director Steven Brill
MTV’s Making the Movie: Without A Paddle
13 Additional Scenes with Optional Director Commentary
6 MTV Interstitials

Dadnapped and Hatching Pete on DVD

Fans get double the laughter and two times the fun when Disney Channel Original Movies Dadnapped and Hatching Pete arrive on DVD on May 12, 2009 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. For the first time ever, two full-length movies featuring some of the network’s favorite young stars come together in a single disc for one low price! Dadnapped and Hatching Pete will provide viewers with hours of wholesome, hilarious entertainment, as well as a bevy of exclusive bonus features not available anywhere else.

Top-flight Disney Channel talent shines in a pair of the network’s signature productions as Emily Osment, star of the hit Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, and David Henrie of Wizards of Waverly Place headline Dadnapped, an action-packed, thrill-a-minute comedy. Then a pair of tween faves rules the roost when Jason Dolley, of Cory in the House and Minutemen, and Mitchell Musso, of Hannah Montana, star in the screwball comedy Hatching Pete, a tale of fame, friendship and “fowl” play.

In Dadnapped, fourteen year-old Melissa (Emily Osment) is struggling with a unique kind of sibling rivalry. To get her father Neil’s (George Newburn) attention, she has to compete with teenage spy Tripp Zoome, the main character in her father’s best selling novels. Her dad spends so much time on his imaginary son’s exciting missions that even Melissa’s special daughter-dad vacation gets interrupted by a promotional event for Neil’s newest book. But when Neil is abducted by overzealous fanboys and falls into the clutches of a pair of sinister brothers, the fictional Tripp can’t save him and Melissa will have to try to channel her “inner Zoome” to rescue her dad.

A bashful high school student finds fames as a high-flying poultry impersonator in Hatching Pete. Pete’s (Jason Dolley) best friend Poole (Mitchel Musso) wants to keep up his family’s longstanding tradition of playing their high school mascot, the Chicken, but Poole is allergic to the costume. Pete agrees to stand in for his pal, but only on the condition that his identity remains a secret. The anonymity of the Chicken suit gives Pete the freedom he’s always dreamed of and a whole new personality emerges. His unexpectedly outrageous antics make the Chicken an instant celebrity— except no one knows it’s Pete. As Poole reaps the benefits of his pal’s talent, Pete must decide if it’s time to reveal that he’s the man behind the beak.
