Theatre Review: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”

Harry Potter

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” mixes magical ingredients of live theater, mesmerizing illusions, and wondrous choreography. The captivating performances and dazzling production quality is certainly a sight to behold however the visual charm is not quite powerful enough to disregard the problematic story. Uncovering questionable motivations and puzzling characterizations behind the spellbinding feast for the eyes unfortunately fall short of greatness.

Particularly for longtime fans of the Harry Potter series as written by J.K. Rowling. The author shares writing credit to the play alongside Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. The show is exquisitely designed for fans particularly with previous knowledge of the book or movie series. But that will also be the show’s undoing. Anyone walking into the show with little or no knowledge of the series will be less invested and have a harder time keeping up. The opening sequence with a montage through a year at wizarding school was particularly choppy. But dazzles with visual amusement.

Harry Potter

Since debuting in 2016 in London, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is finally on tour in the US after much anticipation. Harry Potter fans are floating in mid-air with pure delight and excitement. It’s been nearly 20 years since Harry Potter (John Skelley) and his friends Hermione (Ebony Blake) and Ron (Matt Mueller) defeated Lord Voldemort. It’s now Harry’s son, Albus Potter (Emmet Smith) turn to depart from train station platform 9 3/4 for his first year in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Albus befriends Scorpius Malfoy (Aidan Close) who happens to be the son of Harry’s old foe, Draco Malfoy (Benjamin Thys). The two students decide to break into the Ministry of Magic to steal a confiscated device that would transport them back in time to save a life from the past in order to prevent a terrible loss from occurring. Being as young as they are, they understand little of the devastating consequences they are about to unleash and undo with their intentions.

Harry Potter

The visual spectacle captivates with astonishing sorcery that sparks the imagination. Magical illusions from gravity defying stunts, seamless body switching, excruciating transformations, and much more performed physically live on stage really immerse the audience into the wizarding world. This more than makes up for anyone expecting traditional musical song and dance sequences or music compositions from the films. Glowing pyrotechnics and a series of billowing capes round out the awe.

The story that unfolds will undoubtedly leave the audience talking. Time travel gets overused and tiresome. Revisiting recognizable sequences from the original series can swing from compelling insight to a crutch to underdeveloped nostalgia bait. Contrived conveniences coincidentally resolve itself. Legacy characters seem to act out of character from their counterparts in established lore.

Harry Potter

Moments in the past squander opportunities for new characters to learn and grow about older characters. Thus going against their previous beliefs that would develop and complete arcs. Age differences amount to discrepancy in unfounded rumors of parentage. An entire alternate universe that hardly reveals what is desperately at stake should startling errors remain unchanged. This Harry Potter sequel story has as much in common with the current slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe and Disney’s Star Wars.

The alluring enchantment into a world where magic is real is too irresistible. Die-hard fanatics and completists will not want to miss their chance to see this show to scratch their Harry Potter itch. You have to see it to believe it. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” performs an extensive stay at Hollywood Pantages Theatre from February 15 to June 22, 2025. Theatre Review: Tick, Tick… BOOM!

Tick Tick

Chance Theater, Anaheim’s official resident theater company, presents a fresh take of poignant themes, electrifying score, and heartfelt storytelling in Tick, Tick… Boom!, directed by H. Adam Harris. Set in New York circa 1990, this semi-autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the creator of Rent, brings a touching tale of creativity, ambition, and friendship. Jon (Luc Clopton) a young composer navigating the challenges of pursuing his dreams while balancing personal relationships with his girlfriend Susan (Lena Ceja) and best friend Michael (Mario Houle). The relentlessly ticking countdown of his looming 30th birthday pestering over his mind. Jon pressures himself struggling to become a successful musical theater composer like his idol, Stephen Sondheim.

Tick, Tick… Boom! offers glimpses of the themes, music, and ideas Larson would later expand upon in his legendary and iconic musical, Rent. After Larson’s untimely death, playwright David Auburn adapted Tick, Tick… Boom! from a one-man show to its intimate three-actor format, preserving Larson’s vision. In 2021, Lin-Manuel Miranda directed a critically acclaimed film adaptation of the musical starring Andrew Garfield.

Harry Potter

This honorable prelude and after mint to the success and popularity of the musical Rent speaks more volumes to those who are familar with that production. New audiences walking in without the previous knowledge context to the dramatic rock opera or its creator, may have a harder and longer time warming up to this musical of a struggling artist. A girlfriend wanting to get married and move out of the city.

A best friend selling out of a musical theater dream for a career making big bucks. Recognizable elements that provide the building blocks to Rent reach its peak at the very end when everything comes into perspective with Jon’s fate. Life events and choices like these may seem unrelated and question what it all means until the finale.

The Chance Theater conceptualized a refreshing take to a relatively intimate story with a small cast. Such a wide stage is usually reserved for bigger musical productions of wider caliber. But the creative direction utilized its space well with its set design. A dingy apartment, messy workspace, couch for car scenes, and brick-layered rooftop all appearing, closing in, and opening up space as Jon’s mind expands and contracts different moments of his life. As if his sense of time and place merging into one and falling apart with the ticking of descending countdown.

Harry Potter

An open love letter to any artist struggling with their craft. A self-appointed time table may be more relatable for young people in their 20’s and especially in the 1990s. Today’s sensibilities and technological progress may be out of reach and touch with certain audience members. But the show is deliberately left open to appearing incomplete and accessible. Some lessons can only be learned and earned through hardship and not all creators reap the benefits of their success.

The three performers do a respectable and honorable service to the spiritual story and creative mentality of Johnathan Larson. Luc Clopton and Lena Ceja pull much expertise from their respective roles from the Chance Theater’s production of Rent a couple seasons ago. Luc’s intense body and facial expressions translates vividly onstage. Lena and Mario Houle display their acting range with the different characters Jon finds himself with undoubtedly separate from their principle counterparts. A personal favorite amongst the musical numbers remains to be the ironically comical telephone exchange between Jon and Susan in “Therapy”.

Tick Tick

Tick, Tick… Boom is playing at the Chance Theater in Anaheim, CA on select times from February 1 to February 23, 2025. The show’s running time is 90 minutes with no intermission. For more information including ticket sales, visit www.chancetheater.com or call (888) 455-4212.

Jurassic World Rebirth Big Game Spot

Jurassic World

A new era is born. This summer, three years after the Jurassic World trilogy concluded with each film surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, the enduring Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. In theaters July 2.

Anchored by iconic action superstar Scarlett Johansson, Emmy and SAG nominee Jonathan Bailey and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali, this action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the worst of the worst that were left behind.

Also starring acclaimed international stars Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the film is directed by dynamic visualist Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp.

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Academy Award® nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park. There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.

Ali is Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team member; Critics Choice and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis; Emmy nominee Rupert Friend (Homeland, Obi-Wan Kenobi) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Murder on the Orient Express) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

The cast includes Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) as Reuben’s family. The film also features, as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).

Harry Potter

Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by BAFTA winner Edwards from a script by Koepp (War of the Worlds), based on characters created by Michael Crichton. The film is produced by Oscar® nominee Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, both longtime Jurassic franchise producers and of last summer’s blockbuster, Twisters. The film is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Denis L. Stewart and Jim Spencer.

How to Train Your Dragon Big Game Spot

Dragon

From three-time Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, comes a stunning live-action reimagining of the film that launched the beloved franchise. In Theaters June 13.

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.

With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.

As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).

How to Train Your Dragon is written, produced and directed by DeBlois. It is also produced by three-time Oscar® nominee Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land) and Emmy winner Adam Siegel (Drive, 2 Guns). How To Train Your Dragon is part of the Filmed For IMAX® Program, which offers filmmakers IMAX® technology to help them deliver the most immersive movie experience to audiences around the world.

Harry Potter

Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s New York Times bestselling book series, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise has captivated global audiences, earning four Academy Award® nominations and grossing more than $1.6 billion at the global box-office. Now, through cutting-edge visual effects, DeBlois transforms his beloved animated saga into a breathtaking live-action spectacle, bringing the epic adventures of Hiccup and Toothless to life with jaw-dropping realism as they discover the true meaning of friendship, courage and destiny.
