Moulin Rouge: The Musical Theatre Review

Moulin Rouge

There is not a shred of doubt to see why “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is the most current recipient of 10 Tony-Awards, including best musical. The cabaret nature of nightclub performances suits very well with the jukebox musical style of a broadway caliber exhibition of “truth, beauty, freedom, and love”.

The most fun cabaret show to come to the Pantages Theatre and Los Angeles, as a whole. The palpable exuberance was translucent between audience and performers. A surrounding vibe of a comforting safe space shared by all in attendance. So powerful in fact, that the returning musical number from intermission alone commands a well-deserving standing ovation. The meticulous set design matches, blends, and highlights with the ornate architectural showmanship of the Pantages Theatre as its host. A time machine for the ages in sight and sound.

Take in the “awe” in the awesomeness of this one-of-kind tour-de-force of song and dance like no other. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” takes Vegas back and shows off how it’s really done. Packed and intertwined with pop music from Sia, Lorde, Beyonce, Britney Spears, and countless more. The show allows the freedom to evolve through time to be forever relevant to the contemporary audience.

Moulin Rouge

The romance story beats remain intact, but manages to get around certain setbacks and far exceeds the original 2001 film. This live spectacular is far superior and a vast improvement to its predecessor. Christian chimes in narrating and bookending his own love story, which gives in to the meta outlook of the show within-the-show the characters are putting together for the Moulin Rouge being invested by the Duke.

In turn this keeps the love triangle between Christian, the Duke, and Satine straight-forward and easier to follow for the audience while making room for the numerous musical showstoppers. You can try to restrain yourself from throwing your arms up dancing from your seat, but that would be near impossible.

Moulin Rouge

The electrifying and sizzling production is credited to the astounding cast and crew. Leading the way is the main cast of characters. Courtney Reed (Disney’s Aladdin, Mamma Mia!) as Satine. Conor Ryan (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert) as Christian.

Austin Durant (Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Much Ado About Nothing) as Harold Zidler. André Ward (Rock of Ages, Escape to Margaritaville) as Toulouse-Lautrec. David Harris (Wicked, The Full Monty) as The Duke of Monroth.

Choc Adventure in The Park presented by Disneyland Resort

CHOC

Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and Disneyland® Resort are throwing a 30th-anniversary party like no other! After 30 years of walking for kids, we have reimagined our annual fundraising collaboration as a fundraising celebration! We are excited to announce the CHOC Adventure in the Park presented by Disneyland® Resort on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022 – an exciting and fun-filled way to support and celebrate CHOC.

CHOC

For one night only, Disney California Adventure® park will come to life with exclusive experiences for CHOC supporters, including access to many of the park’s attractions, dining, and retail locations. Rounding out the night are party keepsakes based on fundraising levels, a DJ, special photo locations, sightings of beloved Disney characters, plus a special viewing of the nighttime spectacular “World of Color!”

CHOC

Starting at 5 p.m., CHOC supporters who raise $250+ and secure their ticket can enter Disney California Adventure® park to mix in with non-event guests and enjoy the park before the party begins. From 9 p.m. to midnight, access to Disney California Adventure® park becomes exclusive to CHOC supporters who have met the minimum fundraising threshold.

Like in years past, everyone can donate or raise a minimum of $250 to get their ticket to the celebration (a seven-hour experience). Other increments above $250 activate certain prize levels. The $50 registration fee goes toward the $250 total, so after someone registers, they only need to raise an additional $200 to get their ticket. We invite all participants to fundraise toward their participation. Fundraising tips and ideas can be found here: www.chocwalk.org/Static/Fundraising-Tips.

CHOC

This party celebration event brings the community together for one single goal: to raise vital funds for healthcare programs, education, and research for Southern California’s kids. At the same time, attendees enjoy nighttime access to Disney California Adventure® park, where favorite Disney, Pixar, and Super Hero stories come alive!

“We are thrilled to commemorate 30 years of walking for kids with a unique celebration in Disney California Adventure® park,” said Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock. “Our longstanding relationship with CHOC is based on our shared vision for helping children and their families in our community, and we are proud to continue this legacy through our support of CHOC Adventure in the Park.”

For CHOC Adventure in the Park event information and fundraising opportunities, please visit www.chocwalk.org.

“We can’t think of a better occasion to reimagine this beloved annual fundraising collaboration than its 30th anniversary,” said Kimberly Chavalas Cripe, CHOC’s president, and CEO. “For three decades, current and past patients, families, staff, providers, and wonderful community partners have come together to support CHOC. We are so grateful to participants, past and present, and I’m certain this heartwarming celebration of love, remembrance, and kindness will be made all the more special in this year’s new and exciting format.”

CHOC

CHOC, a pediatric healthcare system based in Orange County, California, is committed to being a leading destination for children’s health by providing exceptional and innovative care. CHOC’s growing community includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo and a regional network of primary and specialty care clinics serving children and families in four counties. CHOC has been recognized as a Best Children’s Hospital in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-23 rankings. CHOC ranked in seven specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; urology; and neonatology, which earned a “top 15” spot.

Universal Studios Hollywood Introduces Jupiter’s Claim

Universal Studios Hollywood Introduces Jupiter’s Claim, An Original Film Set from Jordan Peele’s Expansive New Horror Epic, Nope, as a Permanent Attraction on the World-Famous Studio Tour

The original Jupiter’s Claim set from Jordan Peele’s expansive new horror epic, Nope, will be featured exclusively at Universal Studios Hollywood as a new attraction on the world-famous Studio Tour, beginning Friday, July 22, in tandem with the theatrical release of the new summer event film from Universal Pictures and Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.

The impressive and elaborate Jupiter’s Claim set was created by Production Designer Ruth DeJong, then carefully disassembled post-production and transported to Universal Studios Hollywood where it was meticulously reconstructed on site, complete with original props and details from the film.

Jordan Peele, alongside producing partner Ian Cooper and Monkeypaw Productions, is thrilled to bring the film’s fictional theme park to Universal Studios Hollywood as a permanent Studio Tour attraction.  Concepting the integration of the set to the Studio Tour began early in production in partnership with the filmmakers, working collaboratively with Universal Creative at Universal Studios Hollywood to ensure authenticity and accuracy.

The Jupiter’s Claim set – which can only be seen on the Studio Tour – marks the first time that a Studio Tour attraction has opened day and date with a movie release.  It will be staged within Universal Studios’ backlot alongside a host of other iconic movie sets that include Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, the infamous Psycho house from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Courthouse Square from Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future.

“I remember visiting Universal Studios when I was 12 years old and being mesmerized. That experience reinforced my passion and drive to someday join in on the meta-magic of ‘backlot life.’ Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to direct three movies for Universal,” said Jordan Peele. “It is a privilege to honor these collaborations with my studio partners, crew members and cast, and to be able to share Jupiter’s Claim with fans.”

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Jordan Peele and bring a piece of his innovative film to Universal Studios Hollywood for our guests to experience,” said Scott Strobl, EVP and General Manager, Universal Studios Hollywood. “Jordan’s creativity and ingenuity have produced unique, thought-provoking movies, and we couldn’t be more excited to showcase his original Jupiter’s Claim set as a permanent centerpiece attraction on the Studio Tour, giving our guests a front row seat to authentic movie-making magic.”

Jordan Peele disrupted and redefined modern horror with the Universal blockbusters Get Out and then Us. Now, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare. Written, directed and produced by Peele, Nope reunites the filmmaker with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah), who is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers, Alice) and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun (Minari, Okja) as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.

Jupiter’s Claim, set in Southern California’s Santa Clarita Valley, is a family-fun theme park and predicated on the white-washed history and aesthetics of the California Gold Rush. Owned and operated with evangelical pride by former child star Ricky “Jupe” Park, Jupiter’s Claim becomes a pivotal location as the characters seek to investigate mysterious, unexplained phenomena, leading them toward increasing danger and terrifying consequences.

Theatre Review “Pretty Woman: The Musical”

Pretty Woman

“Pretty Woman: The Musical” follows closely to the story beats of the original material of the 1990 film. Many famous moments and memorable dialogue gets played out live on stage. The adult audience will have a better time if they’re already familiar with that popular Richard Gere and Julia Roberts rom-com.

The first act focuses much on dance and choreography. And searching for the Hollywood dream to come true. The colors and set design distract from the adult beginnings of the story. Another element that perpetuate the fantasy dream ideology is the character of Happy Man filling in the smaller roles throughout the show. From selling maps to celebrity homes, to managing a hotel, and matching expensive outfits.  The bellman has sporadic bursts of dance at the spur of a moment. A stroll through “Rodeo Drive” becomes a fashion runway. The second act concentrated more on the emotional grasp of the characters. The tug of war between their feelings based on their actions and occupation.

Not every musical number is a winner. But the ones that are are worth the time it takes to get to them. I thoroughly enjoyed “Welcome to Hollywood”, “Something About Her”, “Freedom”, “You and I”, and “I Can’t Go Back”. I could easily listen to these song highlights all day.

“Welcome to Hollywood” proclaims itself as the land of dreams waiting to be fulfilled. The only way those dreams can come true is to keep believing, even if they don’t come true. Dreaming keeps the spirit alive.

“Freedom” establishes the glamorous life Edward built for himself still leaves him unknowingly empty. What he thought would make him happy, lots of money, is not truly giving him the kind of freedom he thought he would have. The emotional is peeking out over the physical accomplishments.

“You and I” is perhaps the one scene that actually improves upon the movie version. A musical segment of a non-musical movie that turned into a musical segment with the lead character gazing and revealing himself to the audience. The live operatic measures received the loudest applause for good reason.

“I Can’t Go Back” is without a doubt Viven’s anthem song. This is her declaration of empowerment that she is in control of her thoughts and actions. Adapting from her past, striving for the future, while navigating the present.

“Pretty Woman: The Musical” shows off the right curves for the soft rock concert you’ll want to spend the evening with. The songs are well produced and performed like a rock concert. But only a few will have an everlasting effect that can connect with the audience on a personal level. Those shining gems burn bright and earn its staying power in the classic tale of overcoming self-doubt and defying norms. Music and lyric contributions by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Bringing the late ’80s, early ’90s soft rock flair of the era that helps set the tone for the show.

The stunning cast is composed of Broadway’s best and brightest when it comes to powerful rock vocals. Olivia Valli (Wicked, Jersey Boys) as Vivian Ward. Adam Pascal (RENT,Chicago) as Edward Lewis. Jessica Crouch (We Will Rock You) as Kit De Luca. Kyle Taylor Parker (Kinky Boots, NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar LIVE) as Happy Man. Matthew Stocke as Philip Stuckey.

Garry Marshall directed the original 1990 film and eventually blended his passion of live theater into writing the book for the stage musical adaptation alongside original screenwriter J. F. Lawton.

Pretty Woman: The Musical

Performing now until July 17, 2022 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Tuesdays-Fridays at 7:30 pm. Saturdays at 2 and 7:30 pm. Sundays at 1 and 6:30 pm.

Disney Collaboration with The House of Givenchy

Disney

For the second chapter in its long-term collaboration with Disney, the House of Givenchy is pleased to unveil a limited-edition capsule collection starring beloved characters from the iconic 1961 animated film Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. The collection will be accompanied by custom animation created by the legends of hand -drawn animation at Walt Disney Animation Studios featuring a special appearance by supermodel Kate Moss.

Designed by Creative Director Matthew M. Williams in collaboration with Disney, the Disney x Givenchy 101 Dalmatians capsule celebrates love and loyalty in high style as Pongo, Perdita and their pups set out for fun and adventure in the City of Light. Playful references abound in Disney prints portraying dalmatian puppies frolicking about on Givenchy’s 4G emblem or romping over the balconies of the Hôtel de Caraman, the House’s landmark address on the Avenue George V in Paris. Cruella De Vil is also in town, sweeping through Paris’s Golden Triangle with shopping bags over her arms.

Covetable, collectible pieces for women and men span ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, small leather accessories and fashion jewelry.

For her, signature separates in light pink, black and white include a t-shirt with puppies climbing through Givenchy lettering, a print of Cruella De Vil sauntering by the windows of the historic Givenchy headquarters in Paris, or a black and white varsity jacket bearing a charming portrait of Perdita wearing a G-Lock collar — an homage to the love locks adorning the bridges of Paris.

For him, a black, white, and red palette showcases a stern-looking Pongo, also with a G-Lock, separates with black or white spots, or tailored black suiting with a U -Lock closure and white accents. In a more casual vein, ripped and repaired denim pieces feature dalmatian-like black spots.

Disney

Leather collar necklaces fastened with G-Locks; wallets, card holders, and caps printed with favorite characters; bob hats, a Pongo cross-body bag and a black backpack with a castle silhouette. Women’s footwear, from slides to high- and lowtops mingling the 4G emblem with Perdita and her pups round out the lineup.

As a finishing touch, statement jewelry in silver-finish brass and enamel blends the worlds of Givenchy and 101 Dalmatians: heart-shaped rings, earrings and pendants speak to the universal themes of love and loyalty, embellished with 4G motifs on one side, and dalmatian spots with the 4G logo on the other.

Disney

To further the creative storytelling between Givenchy and 101 Dalmatians, Givenchy worked alongside Disney animators at Walt Disney Animation Studios to create a custom animated short featuring the playful pups on a fanciful adventure throughout the streets of Paris. The animation culminates at Givenchy on the Avenue George V where the dalmatians, accompanied by Matthew M. Williams and supermodel Kate Moss, admire the collection display in the store windows. Their moment of bliss is briefly interrupted by a surprise appearance from the notorious, Cruella De Vil, but she quickly flees after Pongo and Perdita stand their ground with a protective growl.

The animated video for this Disney x Givenchy 101 Dalmatians collection was overseen by Eric Goldberg, the renowned Disney director and 2D animator who brought to life such diverse and unforgettable characters as the Genie in Aladdin, the satyr Phil in Hercules, and Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator in The Princess and the Frog.

Disney

“To have the opportunity to tell a story and create new animation with the characters from 101 Dalmatians, through the imaginative and playful lens of the House of Givenchy, was an absolute dream. It was a true delight to collaborate with such talented creators to bring these beloved characters back to life in such a unique way,” said Eric Goldberg.

The “101 Dalmatians” luxury capsule will launch in select locations worldwide on July 1, 2022.

Disney

Prices for the “101 Dalmatians” range from $400 to $4,200 for ready-to-wear; $230 to $1,665 for accessories, and $335 to $575 for jewelry.
