Disney’s Behind the Scenes Look at The Boy & The Octopus

Disney

Disney has released a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the heartwarming original, A Disney Holiday Short: The Boy & The Octopus. Award-winning director Taika Waititi provides exclusive commentary about the magic he experienced creating this short, offering insight into his goals for casting, filming locations, and the emotional connection he wanted audiences to form with this story.

Since its release last month on a variety of platforms, including YouTube and Disney+, The Boy & The Octopus has received over 75 million views worldwide and an overwhelmingly positive response from viewers celebrating the incredible storytelling. (watch the full short below)

“I was struck by just how magical and beautiful the story was. It’s a simple tale of a boy on holiday and he goes swimming and then meets an unexpected friend in the least expected place. I love the idea of these two characters from completely different worlds who are looking for connection,” said Taika Waititi.

Disney

Here is additional information behind the creation of the short:

  • The melodic rendition of “Part of Your World” from the Disney classic The Little Mermaid (1989) that can be heard throughout the short was recorded live by a 60-piece orchestra and mixed in the legendary Abbey Road recording studio specifically for this short. The song has such a flexible melody that it allowed Toby Williams, the music supervisor from Leland, to play with the song in different ways throughout the film to adapt to the range of emotions.
  • This year’s Disney holiday short was brought to life in two stunning locations including a beautiful beach in Mallorca, Spain, which was the perfect setting to capture the warmth and magic of the story’s seaside scenes. Additional scenes were shot in Prague, where the city’s unique character added depth and richness to the short.
  • Blub Blub was the unofficial name given to the octopus by Taika Waititi and the production team.
  • There was an incredible level of detail in the VFX to capture intricate movements and transformations to create an octopus that felt both realistic and emotionally expressive with eight tentacles that could move independently, shapeshift, and even change colors. “Anytime that we’re making a character there’s always challenges. Aside from having eight tentacles, octopuses can shape shift, they can change color on their skin. We built in all sorts of crazy things,” said Adam Droy from Untold Studios, the VFX creative agency for this short.

Moana 2 Makes a Splash! Box Office Records Broken

Moana

With a 5-day domestic debut of $221M, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2” is shattering numerous box office records including the biggest 5-day opening of all time, the biggest Thanksgiving debut and Thanksgiving weekend (3-day and 5-day), the biggest Thanksgiving day, and the biggest Black Friday ever. The film, which reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage, opened in most markets around the world with $165M internationally, bringing its global cume to date to $386M, the second biggest global debut of 2024.

“‘Moana 2’ has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that ‘Moana’ has become,” said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. “We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music. This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve helped make this a record-breaking debut.”

Domestic records include:

  • Biggest 5-day opening of all-time (surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”/$204.6M)
  • Biggest Thanksgiving weekend of all time by far ($221M 5-day, $135.5M 3-day, surpassing “Frozen 2”/$125M 5-day and $94M 3-day)
  • Biggest Thanksgiving debut by far (more than doubling “Frozen”/$94M 5-day and $67M 3-day)
  • Thanksgiving Day of $28M (nearly doubling “Frozen 2”/$15M)
  • Highest ever Black Friday at the box office with $54.5M (exceeding “Frozen 2”/$34.2M)
  • Biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios debut of all time.
  • Disney now holds the top 7 Thanksgiving debuts of all time and 9 of the top 10.

Moana

This is Disney’s third film this year to surpass $150M domestically in its opening weekend, alongside Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($211M) and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” ($155M), marking the three biggest openings of 2024.

“Moana 2” is off to a strong start internationally as well, driven by No. 1 openings around the world.

  • Highest animated opening weekend of all time in France
  • Second highest animated weekend of all time in Italy and Brazil
  • Highest WDAS opening weekend of all time across the Latin American region and in nearly 30 individual markets worldwide, including France, Italy, Australia, Brazil and Mexico

It is now open in all markets except Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong, releasing in all three in the coming week.

“Moana 2” Movie Review

Moana

“Moana 2” sails audiences back into the world of “Moana” from the 2016 original. Three years have passed with Moana’s village accepting and thriving in their wayfinding heritage. But young Moana, Auliʻi Cravalho, remains restless in pursuit of searching for more of their people seemingly disconnected from the rest of the vast ocean. Moana once again answers the call to adventure. Instead of returning a sacred artifact, she must use her seafaring skills to navigate the open water leading a bungling crew to break a curse over a forgotten island. New and familar obstacles emerge including the Kakamora, a giant clam, sea serpents, and guardian of the portal of the gods, Matangi.

Maui, Dwayne Johnson, coincidentally goes on a similar mission as Moana. He’s mostly a motivational speaker to the young heroine. Maui by far delivers the funniest laughs. The demi-god’s catchphrase is incorporated into his new song “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?”. In fact, many story beats and songs are counterparts to the original. “We’re Back” is a successor to “Where You Are”. “Beyond” succeeds “How Far I’ll Go”. Even “Shiny” has a new replacement.

Disney

Matangi, Awhimai Fraser, is a guardian to the portal of the gods. She embodies the visual calling of a sleek villain. After advising Moana to “Get Lost” teaching you don’t have to know where you’re going in order the find what you’re looking for, her story pretty much ended from there. Not unlike Tamatoa, the giant crab from the first movie.

A tidal wave of visually colorful vistas. A sensory treat to see panoramic views of the open sea, mountain paradise, gargantuan sea creatures, peaceful bliss of a starry night sky, and the epic power of Maui actually using his fish hook to pull an island to the surface just as legend depicts him. Gorgeous viewing experience on the big screen.

The first adventure left Moana to sneak off on her secret journey. This new sanctioned adventure not only gets a proper crew, but also a ceremonious send off with a dramatic boat launch. Moana adequately selects her new shipmates based on a variety of useful skills. Rose Matafeo as Loto, the clever boat builder, is a natural choice with a tenacity learning from failures.

Disney

David Fane as Kele, the disgruntled farmer, although grouchy and hesitant later adapts and absorbs new lessons proving you’re never too old to stop learning. Hualālai Chung as Moni, the passionate storyteller, goes beyond telling and retelling stories, gets to finally live and breath in one. The crew is mostly meaningless until the final act when each pulls their own weight. Everyone fulfills a personal gain whether they realize it or not.

Even more new characters play a variety of parts in the story. Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s new little sister, Simea, is irresistibly adorable audiences will immediately fall in love with. Moana and Simea interactions are so genuine and infectious. The voice performances really sell their bond. There is a touching moment when Moana introduces the Ocean to Simea. Just as one would pass down knowledge and experience to a younger generation in a caring and wondrous manner.

Disney

“Moana 2” will split audiences depending on what they’re hoping to see and hear. Those who don’t like much change will embrace the familiarity of this sequel to the original. The other half will dread to find the motivation behind the sequel story starting with its Disney+ limited series origin. The sequel focuses on connections as the emotional draw between family, friends, and community. The film does include a mid-credit scene determined to continue more ocean exploration.

Dive in and get hooked on “Moana 2” now playing in theaters.

LA Zoo

It’s been a few years since we’ve had the chance to check out LA Zoo’s annual Christmas lights celebration, and we’re pleased to report that it has grown into a truly great event.

Filled with stunning 3D light sculptures of animal friends, LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow is bigger than ever, with a growing roster of stunning light displays scattered throughout the park.

Disney

We had a hard time progressing past the butterfly display near the kid’s zoo area. It was so stunning and entrancing we had to remind ourselves there was more to see!

The Conservation Carousel is available for rides during the event (it is an extra cost, $3 per person), and is extra magical at night. Churros, cocoa, specialty cocktails, and more are available for purchase throughout the zoo during the event.

Disney

While the animals are all asleep, live performers, sensory displays, and even Santa himself make this a full night out that’s perfect for any family needing some holiday cheer. We particularly enjoyed the polar bear whack-a-mole game near Santa’s setup. (As a side note, like many malls, personal photos of Santa are not permitted. The only way to get pictures with the big boss himself is to purchase them from the Zoo).

Disney

For guests looking for more reasons to celebrate, these VIP events are a great way to get the party started.

  • Holiday Happy Hours (Dec. 5 & 19), “Ugly Holiday Sweater” Theme: Guests 21 and older are encouraged to don their most festive holiday sweater for exclusive Holiday Happy Hours. Accomplished actor, writer, composer, director, and Tony Award-winner Jason Alexander stars in the coveted dream role as “Tevye” in “Fiddler on the Roof”. Director, Lonny Price, and choreographer, Lee Martino, faithfully revitalize the 1964 Broadway production as a definitive homage to the brilliant work laid out by the show’s original creators that remains a long-standing musical icon.

Tevye the dairy man (Jason Alexander) and his wife Golde (Valerie Perri) live in the quaint village of Anatevka blessed with their five daughters. “Tradition” is held to high esteem among the community of Russian Jews in 1905 but can be as unsteady as a fiddle player on a rooftop with outside influences challenging beliefs held for generations. The three eldest daughters hold on to the tradition of Yente (Eileen T’Kaye) being the “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” to find them suitable men to marry as their devoted husbands.

Tevye often speaks to God reflecting on his poor life and what a dream it would be “If I Were a Rich Man”. After “Sabbath Prayer”, Tevye meets with and agrees to Lazar Wolf the weathly butcher (Ron Orbach) marrying his eldest daughter as a good match. The promising prospect brings the men and other villages to drink and dance “To Life”. Everything seems to be going as well as Tevye could hope.

Despite Tevye’s daughters original desires to be wed in arranged marriages like their parents before them, outside influences show them a different path. They want to be married for love. This would only prove to be the beginning of Tevye’s struggle to uphold everything he lived and worked so hard for only to realize how much of the radical outside world would affect everyone he held dear to his heart and soul. How much of himself can he let go and accept to see to his family’s happiness?

Disney

Childhood sweethearts Tzeitel (Rachel Ravel) and Motel the tailor (Cameron Mabie) pledged each other to marriage. Devoted Hodel (Alanba J. Smith) and Perchik the student (Remy Laifer) seek Tevye’s blessing, but not his permission. Bookworm Chava (Emerson Glick) and Fyedka, a young man (Sawyer Patterson), runaway at Tevye’s disapproval of a relationship outside the faith. To make matters worse, the Constable (Gregory North) warns and brings a violent demonstration of the Russians evicting the Jewish community from their home.

“Fiddler on the Roof” has never looked or sounded better than at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The star studded cast shines not only from Jason Alexander but everyone else on stage as well. The perfect matchmaking cast this production has ever seen and heard. There’s really no other comparison.

Disney

La Mirada and McCoy Rigby has outdone themselves yet again. The lively and festive choreography dances circles around your head. The heavenly sublime vocals can clear gloomy skies any day. Every actor can be seen having the time of their lives. Emotionally tense performances that will leave you in tears. Superb direction honors the original with exquisite precision and careful attention. It doesn’t get any better than this. After a long-spanning prominent career in the arts, Jason Alexander fulfills a life-long dream that exceptionally pays off and plays out tremendously in a tour-de-force performance.

Disney

Surely to be a beautiful and memorably bright highlight not only in the coveted role of Tevye, but to ever be so fortunate to work amongst trusted and talented colleagues. Jason Alexander captivates the audience from the powerful sunrise opening to the dismal sunset closing. This is the definitive production of “Fiddler on the Roof” that will keep the audience engrossed for years to come.

“Fiddler on the Roof” featuring Jason Alexander is playing at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts from November 8 to December 1, 2024.
