It’s been a few years since we’ve had the chance to check out LA Zoo’s annual Christmas lights celebration, and we’re pleased to report that it has grown into a truly great event.

Filled with stunning 3D light sculptures of animal friends, LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow is bigger than ever, with a growing roster of stunning light displays scattered throughout the park.

We had a hard time progressing past the butterfly display near the kid’s zoo area. It was so stunning and entrancing we had to remind ourselves there was more to see!

The Conservation Carousel is available for rides during the event (it is an extra cost, $3 per person), and is extra magical at night. Churros, cocoa, specialty cocktails, and more are available for purchase throughout the zoo during the event.

While the animals are all asleep, live performers, sensory displays, and even Santa himself make this a full night out that’s perfect for any family needing some holiday cheer. We particularly enjoyed the polar bear whack-a-mole game near Santa’s setup. (As a side note, like many malls, personal photos of Santa are not permitted. The only way to get pictures with the big boss himself is to purchase them from the Zoo).

L.A. Zoo Lights is an affordable, welcoming, and inclusive celebration, offering themed nights reflecting the diverse community it serves.

  • Sensory-Inclusive Zoo Lights (Dec. 3): A serene evening with sensory accommodations for all guests, which includes smaller crowds, quieter music, sensory bags available on a first-come first-served basis, reentry options, and more.
