We have good news for fans of embassy intrigue. Netflix has renewed the critically acclaimed political drama The Diplomat for a fifth season, following the success of the fourth season’s launch on October 15, 2026.

The series, created by Debora Cahn, has been a remarkably consistent performer since it premiered in 2023. Across all four seasons, The Diplomat has spent 13 weeks in the Top 10, reached the Top 10 in 87 countries, and earned over 130 million views. Season 4 opened to strong viewership, reaching number 3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and entering the Top 10 in 63 countries — and it set a new record for owned social impressions within 13 days of launch, the series’ strongest owned social performance to date.

Season 4 finds two marriages threatening to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she is trying to save, while President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. The season stars four Emmy nominees: Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.

The Diplomat’s trophy case is already crowded. The series is a Golden Globe, Emmy, SAG, PGA, WGA and Critics Choice nominee and an AFI honoree, and for Season 3, Keri Russell won the SAG Actor’s Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series while Allison Janney won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, with seven Emmy nominations in total.
