Theater Review: Fancy Nancy – The Musical

Fancy Nancy

“Fancy Nancy: The Musical,” presented at the Chance Theater in Anaheim, CA, takes everyone’s favorite creative and imaginative little girl, along with her loyal friends, on a journey of growth, self-discovery, and encouragement. The school is putting on a play, and Nancy (Jillian Batt/Kristin Cortines) has her sights set on the undersea role of a beautiful mermaid.

While Nancy’s friends, Bree (Zoe Godfrey-Grinage/Juliet Parker), Rhonda (Fiona Burrows/Cecily Dowd), Wanda (Alyssa Corella/Claire Manson), and Lionel (Elijah Douglas/Matt Takahashi) are cast in dream roles like seahorses and sharks, Nancy obtains the less-than-stellar role as… a tree. Disappointed with the results, Nancy still makes time to play with tea and dress in tiaras and feather boas. Nancy’s mother, Mrs. Clancy (Haley Catherine/Katelyn Spurgin), is there every step of the way to help her daughter navigate those tough emotional moments life throws.

Fancy Nancy

It’s easy to see why the theater has been able to bring back this musical production for children returning for its seventh season to the Chance Theater. Fans young and young at heart are drawn right into the excitement upon stepping inside. The theater’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in the variety of activities available, from tables of books, plush, stickers, and other activities for purchase, to the option to provide tiaras and feathered boas to make the show extra special. The book’s illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser also makes frequent appearances to the show since the production’s inception, further enhancing the sense of community and welcome.

The engaging story appropriately translates a wonderful transition from book to stage. Inspiring young readers to take more of the creative arts into their lives with performance. The actors do a stellar job of bringing characters to life for the target age group. The humor appeals equally to adults and children with its silly innocence, exaggerated expressions, and comic timing. After the one-hour and ten-minute performance (with a fifteen-minute intermission), the audience is invited onstage to meet, greet, take pictures, and sign autographs with the characters.

Fancy Nancy

“Fancy Nancy: The Musical” is irresistibly engaging for an entertaining family event. Fans of the book series will immediately rejoice and be enthralled by the story, characters, and songs. The show’s interactive elements, including some light audience participation from the comfort of your seat, add an extra layer of fun and excitement. Our favorite moment was Lionel’s shark song for the “Deep Sea Dances Ballet”.

Book and lyrics by Susan Dilallo. Music and lyrics by Danny Abosch. Based on the popular “Fancy Nancy” books by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. Directed by Laura M. Hathaway. Music direction by Robyn Manion. Now playing at the Chance Theater on select days until June 9, 2024. For more information and ticket sales call (888) 455-4212 or visit www.chancetheater.com.

The Beach Boys – The Definitive Look at America’s Band

The Beach Boys

Frank Marshall, the well-known producer, and frequent Spielberg collaborator, has quietly been directing some of the best music documentaries to hit streaming platforms in recent years. His filmography includes “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story,” and “Just Call Out My Name,” a documentary on Carole King and James Taylor.

These films showcase Marshall’s talent for capturing the stories behind some of America’s greatest musical achievements. His latest project for Disney+, co-directed with Thom Zimny, tackles the story of the Beach Boys in the aptly titled documentary “The Beach Boys.”

The Beach Boys have been referred to for decades as America’s band, a moniker that originated in the tabloids of the 60s and remains a fitting description of their musical achievements and enduring influence on the industry. The documentary not only acknowledges but emphasizes this fact, primarily through interviews with industry insiders, contemporaries, and a new generation of musicians they’ve inspired.

Co-directors Marshall and Zimny, after extensive research, interviewed a wide range of talent, many of whom proudly cite the Beach Boys’ sound and style as influences. These include Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Lindsey Buckingham, among others. Their interviews reveal not just musical influences but also personal anecdotes about how the Beach Boys’ music changed their lives. In a particularly moving moment, Janelle Monáe recalls being brought to tears as a child upon first hearing “God Only Knows.”

These personal anecdotes, along with insights from contemporaries and industry experts, illuminate the band’s profound influence on American music, the American dream, and rock and roll as a whole. However, the heart of this Californian dream group’s story lies in the band members themselves, and their story is what drives this documentary film.

The film offers an honest look at the lives of all the Beach Boys, each during their time in the band. Each member’s story is told, and the sum of their parts and stories is what makes not only the band but the story of the Beach Boys. The story is one of family, both the family you are born into and the friends who become family along the way.

The band was formed by a group of brothers, their cousin, and a best friend. This is the original group that shot to fame, the kind of dream-like beginning that could only happen in sunny Southern California, and that dream is the story that is told here.

The Beach Boys’ early music, described as feel-good and fun, mirrored their public image when they burst onto the scene. However, as the documentary reveals, things weren’t always so idyllic for this iconic rock band. They evolved beyond their original persona, and the directors masterfully explore this evolution, both of the band and its individual members. The storytelling is so compelling that you realize sometimes fact is indeed stranger than fiction.

Fancy Nancy

The documentary’s use of idyllic archive photos and footage of the band in their early days as teenagers, juxtaposed with images of them gracing album covers, performing on stage, and maturing into a more sophisticated sound and look, is perhaps its strongest storytelling element. The archive footage effectively conveys their evolution, with images sometimes speaking louder than words. It also allows the band to tell their own story in their own words, particularly the Wilson brothers, whose voices might otherwise be lost due to their passing or, in Brian Wilson’s case, his struggles with mental health.

The film honors all members of the band, including Mike Love, Al Jardine, and David Marks, whose interviews offer strong and honest perspectives on their contributions and the full Beach Boys story. Other documentaries may have explored the band’s music, culture, and influence, but none have gotten as personal as this one.

The moving interviews set this film apart. The love and respect between these friends, who have not only played together for over 60 years but also share a deep bond, is palpable. The film doesn’t shy away from the difficulties the band faced but explores them with a personal touch that feels almost healing for those involved. Every interview conveys not just an interest in telling the story but a deep love for the band members themselves.

Family members and friends also contribute to the storytelling, offering support and context for both personal and professional successes and failures. These are handled with such grace that you’ll not only appreciate the Beach Boys’ music and impact but also realize how much they’ve enriched our lives.

While no one band member outshines the others, the film rightfully acknowledges the musical genius of Brian Wilson, the group’s most iconic member. His major contributions are explored alongside the activities of the rest of the band during those times.

The documentary honors his talent while reminding us that everything any member did for the band, including Brian, was done with everyone else in mind. They worked together to make their band and their music work, even when they fell short. The personal and creative struggles they faced are all part of their story, a story worth telling. These legends endured a changing tide in culture and music, as well as in their personal lives, and they did it together to keep their music alive.

“The Beach Boys” reminds us of the profound impact the band has had on the American dream and how much poorer our lives would be without them and their music. It is a testament to their enduring legacy.

The Beach Boys is now streaming on Disney+.

Review: Girl from the North Country at Pantages Theatre

Girl from the North Country

I’ll be honest, I went into Girl from the North Country with little to no experience with Bob Dylan’s music. So much of it was new to me. This show performs more like a play with musical accompaniment than a true musical, with the songs being somewhat parallel to the story more than ingrained in it.

Girl from the North Country takes place in Duluth, Minnesota in 1934, in the middle of the Great Depression. Nick Laine, his wife Elizabeth, their son Gene, and their adopted Black daughter Marianne live in a Guesthouse also occupied by a small cast of characters who are all navigating the Depression together.

Fancy Nancy

The Laines are already grappling with 19-year-old Marianne’s pregnancy, Gene’s alcoholism, and Elizabeth’s worsening dementia—but they are soon joined by Joe Scott, a boxer who was famous in the 1920s, trying to regain his career, and Reverend Marlowe, a grimy Bible salesman. Also living at the home are the Burke family with their non-verbal adult son, and Mrs. Neilsen, a widow who is Nick’s love interest.

The show revolves around the lives of these people for the short time they are all together at the Guesthouse, bringing laughter and heartbreak through the complexity of their characters and their relationships during a time of immense hardship.

First and foremost, the cast was exceptional! Their collective talent was truly remarkable and unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. Nearly all the actors showcased their versatility by also serving as percussionists at various points during the performance, some even taking to a small drum kit positioned at the front of the stage. Notable standouts included Carla Woods for her captivating vocals, Jennifer Blood (portraying Elizabeth Laine) for her convincingly nuanced portrayal of a woman navigating life with dementia, and Sharaé Moultrie and Matt Manuel for their commanding vocals and skillful character development.

Fancy Nancy

The rendition of “Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love?)” was particularly beautiful. The flow of the show was marked by a remarkable blend of nuance and complexity, making it a pleasure to observe each actor’s performance and the evolution of their characters throughout the songs, most of which were performed away from the main stage, using a physical microphone. Haunting harmonies blended expertly with low, almost sepia lighting, really brought the audience into their depression-era world. The second act felt a bit darker, but the characters are so riveting, and the performances so robust, that it doesn’t feel gratuitous. “Forever Young” was compelling and heartwrenching.

Fancy Nancy

If you are a fan of Bob Dylan, as many audience members the night I attended were, you will be completely moved by the arrangements in this show, and how beautifully they accompany the scenes around them. If you are not well-versed in Dylan, this show will feel like a new musical to you, and maybe the music will resonate differently, which could be a good thing. You will be entranced by the performances and feel for the struggles the characters faced in their short time together. Girl from the North Country is one not to be missed.

Girl from the North Country performs at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for three weeks only, May 14 – June 2, 2024.

Chance Theater Review: Alma

Alma

“Alma” guides the audience on a roller coaster of emotions with the struggling bond between an immigrant mother and her coming-of-age daughter. The tightly packed 70-minute play is presented with no intermission delivering a solid close-knit bond of family in an intimate theater space set in a small apartment complex. Fitted with a living room, kitchen, and doors to bedrooms and a hallway, there is little escape from the confines of stressful occupations of morals, responsibilities, and dreams.

Alma (Marta Portillo) is under pressure as a mother to care for her child’s physical well-being and prospects while dealing with swirling political climates and deportation. Captivating performance as a first-time mother doing her best to maintain control and breathe a suitable life in a foreign country. Angel (Heather Lee Echeverria) is a reluctant youth eager to make her way in the world but on her terms. Wanting to make her own inexperienced choices to grow and thrive without constant supervision. Believable adolescent tendencies are marked by a tender display of truth and discipline.

Fancy Nancy

“Alma” showcases a gut-wrenching and powerful sadness within the immigrant family. The timeless dynamic bond of mother and daughter fits into the timely climate many immigrant families face every day and for many generations. The push and pull between hard physical labor, SAT scores, and redefining the American dream. The escalating situations can be triggering to the sensitive hearts, curious minds, and traumatized souls of the audience. An intrusive interruption between fights comes in the form of a malfunctioning television set.

Fancy Nancy

A similar story device like in the 2006 comedy-drama film “Little Miss Sunshine” with the yellow Volkswagen Transporter van. An audience drawn to dramatic immigrant family stories like “Kim’s Convenience” will certainly embrace this offering. “Alma” is brave and well-suited for Mother’s Day opening weekend which can be a challenging and respectful invitation to open discussion. Relatable, grounded, and thought-provoking.

Fancy Nancy

Chance Theater presents the Orange County premiere of “Alma”. Written by Benjamin Benne, winner of the ATC National Latine Playwrights Award, and directed by Sara Guerrero (Founding Artist and Artistic Director of Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble). Now playing on select dates until May 31. For more information and ticket sales, call (888) 455-4212 or visit www.ChanceTheater.com.
