Switzerland's Lake Geneva & Matterhorn Region

The New Year is here and it is time to inventory all the exciting getaways lined-up on my 2016 calendar. Some are penciled-in and some are in ink. One trip that falls in the latter category is a return to Switzerland this spring to experience the Lake Geneva & Matterhorn Region.

This fascinating region stretches from the metropolis of Geneva to Lausanne, through the charming Montreux Riviera, across to the iconic Matterhorn and surrounding resorts of Crans-Montana, Leukerbad, Verbier, Saas-Fee and Zermatt. Featuring beautiful lakes, majestic mountains and colorful city life and countryside’s, the area is a veritable microcosm of the country.

Here at the crossroads of Europe, a visitor can find international shopping, world-class culture, famous spas, skiing, vineyards, luxury hotels and charming chalets, and much more. Travelers can also soak in Lake Geneva, the largest freshwater lake in Europe. Famous for steamships that crisscross its waters, the lake is must-see Switzerland.

One of the things I want to do on my upcoming trip is visit the new Charlie Chaplin museum (www.chaplinsworld.ch) that opens this spring in Montreux Riviera. Dedicated to the life and times of the famous American comedian, the museum will boast more than 32,000 sq-ft of Chaplin in a “symbiosis of the scenic, cinematographic, multimedia and virtual world.” The museum will take guests on a tour of Chaplin’s mythical mansion, dubbed Manoir de Ban.

Surrounded by more than 34 acres of gardens, pathways and terraces, the sprawling estate was Chaplin’s home from 1952 until his death in 1977. The entertainer and his wife sold their Beverly Hills home in 1952 and moved to Switzerland after controversy surrounded his re-entry to the US after touring abroad. And while visiting the Chaplin Museum I hope to stay a night at the Modern Times Hotel, which will be part of the museum. Situated in the town of Vevey, the 4-star hotel overlooks Lake Geneva and is scheduled to open next month.

Another interesting gallery slated to open this year in the Montreux Riviera area is the “Nest,” the new Nestlé Museum. The food industry giant is celebrating its 150th anniversary and the new educational and historical complex will stand on the site where Henri Nestlé devised his famous Farine Lactée infant cereal in 1866.

From the “Swiss Riviera” of Montreux, I would like to take a train to Lausanne and experience the renovated Royal Savoy Hotel (www.royalsavoy.ch). An iconic Swiss hotel since 1906, the 5-star hotel reopened last November. The historic structure resembles a castle and sits in the center of the city, surrounded by parks and wonderful landscape views. Later this year the hotel will open a new spa and swimming pool to compliment its luxurious accommodations, gourmet dining options and attractive location.

While staying at the Royal Savoy, I hope to take a train and then a mountain cable car to Glacier 3000 (www.glacier3000.ch/en) to experience the “Peak Walk by Tissot,” the first and only suspension bridge to connect two mountain peaks. Opened in 2014, the 107-meter-long suspension bridge connects the mountain station with the Scex Rouge’s summit at 3,000 meters above sea level. Glacier 3000 is a company that operates cable cars in the Diablerets region. The Glacier 3000 station offers memorable views of Oldenhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and numerous other Swiss mountain peaks. And the “Peak Walk by Tissot” is a great, albeit scary, way to see them.

The Lake Geneva & Matterhorn Region is at the center of an efficient national network of trains, cable cars and turn-off-the-century steamers, providing seamless transportation to every corner of the region. The Swiss National Railway system provides connections to every major city in Switzerland and throughout Europe, and Swiss International Airlines, along with other major carriers depart daily from Los Angeles to Geneva. Blackmarket Bakery's Newest Location Offers Quality, Community and Passion

Socalthrills on Location was thrilled to participate in a sneak preview of the new Blackmarket Bakery on Broadway in downtown Santa Ana’s Artists Village. Housed in the historical Santora Building, the bakery’s 2,300 square foot space had a hip retro feel with art deco elements which harkened us back to simpler times but with a little rock & roll vibe.

We had an opportunity to catch up with culinary mastermind, Chef Rachel Klemek who was inspiring, grounded and has remained true to her roots focusing on quality, community and passion for her craft. Her inspired approach to baking sets her apart from other bakeries. Klemek, owner and chef, firmly believes honest to goodness ingredients like sugar, flour, eggs, butter (all “blackmarket” goods during WWII) is the foundation to her exceptional hand crafted baked goods.

IMG_0988

The menu is a pleasure trip for all palates which includes family friendly favorites like mac and cheese topped with bacon soaked in apple vinegar – a party for the taste buds! The bakery also features a variety of other mouth-watering favorites like the “eggywich” as well as assorted bar bites, craft beers and hard cider floats. Additionally, the bakery features locally roasted Kean Coffee and espresso beverages.

And certainly, this sneak preview wouldn’t be complete without our little indulgence into the made-from-scratch “eggywich,” the meatball bite and a sampling of Blackmarket signature cookies and tarts. We would be remiss in not mentioning our personal experimenting with the hard cider floats and the decadent coffee drinks – as in the hand crafted “Nutella latte!”

And Klemek’s hand wasn’t the only one involved in the resurrection of the facility. Inspired by the buildings 1920’s architecture, her husband David, hand welded the apple tree, charmingly positioned in the bakery’s window front, exquisitely hand stained the tabletops and designed the striking wrought iron staircase which served as a backdrop and reminder to the uniqueness of the bakery and her creators.

Over the next several months, they will be expanding their menu and introducing additional hand crafted items as well as brunch on the weekends. For more information, visit http://www.blackmarketbakery.com

Hunter Fan Company Blows Away Competition with Wi-Fi Enabled, Apple HomeKit-Enabled Ceiling Fans

Hunter Fan Company, the leading manufacturer of ceiling fans, enters the connected home space by debuting two Wi-Fi enabled fans at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Named Symphony and Signal, the fans boast support for Apple HomeKit technology and seamlessly interact with other HomeKit-enabled products to create an automated suite of comfort, security and energy efficiency.

“Our ceaseless innovation is why Hunter Fan is the industry leader, and these new Wi-Fi enabled fans, with added support for Apple HomeKit, are a testament to our heritage of progress and originality,” said Hunter Fan CEO John Alexander. “They’re beautiful, affordable, high quality pieces of decor that bring state-of-the-art Wi-Fi technology where it might not be expected: the ceiling fan. As we celebrate 130 years, we have several exciting developments to share with our customers, and are proud to kick off 2016 at CES with Symphony and Signal.”

Apple HomeKit technology requires iOS 8.1 or later and allows users to control each fan – or a group of fans – using Siri on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Apple Watch. Users can also create custom scenes with other HomeKit-enabled products: for example, one could create a scene to automatically turn on the fan’s light, lock the doors, close the garage door and set the thermostat to the desired temperature in just one step. Users can also set up HomeKit-enabled products to work together based on triggers, such as having the fan’s light turn on the moment the fire alarm detects smoke. HomeKit technology provides advanced security with end-to-end encryption and authentication between the fan and the iOS device.

Symphony (PRNewsFoto/Hunter Fan Company)
Symphony (Hunter Fan Company)

Symphony has a graceful, modern design and comes in fresh white, while Signal, with its satin nickel housing and reversible wood-finished blades, is a contemporary blend of sleek design and classic finishes. Symphony’s MSRP is $329; Signal’s MSRP is $379. Both fans are available spring 2016 at: HunterFan.com; Amazon.com; Build.com; BestBuy.com; HomeDepot.com; Lowes.com; Menards.com; and in lighting showrooms nationwide.

Joining the connected home space was a natural extension of Hunter Fan’s business, and the company is exploring various opportunities for Wi-Fi enabled designs. “When we first had cameras on our iPhones, we didn’t immediately envision the ability to deposit checks with them. Similarly, we know that these fans enhance energy efficiency, home security and convenience, but we believe we’ve just scratched the surface of their full potential,” says Hunter Chief Marketing Officer John Neilson.

Symphony and Signal were developed in collaboration with industry leaders Ayla Networks and Marvell Technology Group Ltd., which will feature the fans in their respective displays at CES. For more information, please visit http://www.hunterfan.com/hunterconnects.

Withings Unveils Thermo, an Ultra Fast Wi-Fi Connected Temporal Thermometer

Withings, a leader in the connected health revolution, has extended its therapeutic areas of expertise with the unveiling of Withings Thermo – a Wi-Fi-connected temporal artery thermometer with a revolutionary 16-sensor array that provides one of the fastest, most accurate, non-invasive temperature readings available. Withings is also thrilled to announce the Withings Thermo is honored with 2 CES Innovation Awards, Best in Fitness, Sport & Biotech and Tech for a Better World, showing Withings’ continued commitment to inventing products that have a positive impact on people’s health.

Reinventing temperature measurement with a revolutionary sensor

Withings Thermo measures the temperature from the temporal artery at the side of head, the new gold standard for temperature measurement, which provides one of the most accessible and reliable images of body temperature, while ensuring a comfortable and sanitary process. Withings Thermo boasts the new HotSpot SensorTM Technology: a sophisticated sensor array of 16 independent infrared (IR) sensors that can quickly locate and measure the IR signature and heat being emitted.

With just a point in the direction of the artery, without requiring any motion or scanning, the sensors take 4,000 measurements in 2 seconds while a specially-designed algorithm automatically corrects for biases, such as skin heat loss and the ambient temperature. The hottest point is then determined to ensure the most accurate and reliable single temperature reading.

The first Wi-Fi connected thermometer to monitor the health of the whole family

Thermo automatically sends temperature readings to your smartphone on the dedicated application, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing a seamless synchronization. As Cédric Hutchings, CEO of Withings, said: “We invented the first Wi-Fi connected health device, Withings’ smart scale, to enable users seamless access to their data to take control of their weight. Withings Thermo was designed to have a similar impact on the family’s health routine.”

The app gives the ability to better control and manage fever episodes for multiple users, by following the temperature trend and getting a clear fever status at any time. It also allows users to provide contextual information associated with readings, such as logging symptoms or making notes of any administered medicines. In addition, notifications can be set to prompt parents with measurement reminders to better monitor fever episodes. All collected data can be easily shared with a physician at any time.

Temperature taking made easy and convenient

Measurement is made via an incredibly simple gesture. Users gently place the device on their forehead, click the button, and they get the result instantly. A vibration tells the user when the measurement is complete, and along with displaying the reading in either Celsius and Fahrenheit, the device will also provide instant color-coded feedback via a LED display that will glow Green for normal, Orange for moderated, and Red for elevated temperature levels. With Thermo, taking the temperature of a sleeping child, and evaluating its fever in the dark is incredibly easy.

Thermo operates on two AAA size batteries that can last up to 2 years, making the device exceptionally portable – easily moved from the household medicine cabinet to a mother’s purse or father’s pocket.

Leading the connected health revolution

The Withings Thermo is a Class IIa Medical device and with appropriate fillings for FDA-Cleared status in the US and CE Medical Approved status in the EU. Thermo is joining the Withings health devices ecosystem, which already covers fitness, activity, weight, baby, security, air quality, sleep and cardiovascular health with devices such as the Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor that revolutionizes the way users take their blood pressure at home. By expanding into this important health measure, Withings is further delivering on its mission to reinvent personal health management and is paving the way for a new patient-physician relationship where accurate and meaningful data allows for better care.

For the past 6 consecutive years, the Consumer Electronics Association has recognized Withings new devices for their cutting-edge technology and design: Withings Thermo has been honored with 2 CES 2016 Innovation Awards, in the categories Fitness, Sport & Biotech and Tech for a Better World.

Availability

Withings Thermo will be available in Q1 2016 for a MSRP of $99.95 and will be supported by a dedicated app for both iOS and Android devices.

Blackmarket Bakery To Open New Location in Historic Downtown Santa Ana

Chef Rachel Klemek will be extending the reach of her award-winning made-from-scratch baked goods when she opens a new outpost, Blackmarket Bakery on Broadway, on Saturday, January 9th, 2016 in the downtown Santa Ana’s Santora building in the Artists Village (211 N. Broadway). Chef Klemek’s inspired approach to baking has set her apart within the county’s culinary landscape. Staying true to its roots, the new Santa Ana neighborhood bakery will highlight pastries made from her token “blackmarket” ingredients – butter, flour, sugar, and eggs.

3BabyCakes_0a909c58-29ba-41cf-9037-6a8827c94eff_1024x1024

Built in 1928, the Santora building houses the bakery’s 2,300-square-foot space, adding a “retro” feel with art-deco elements, reminiscent of simpler times. As the largest Blackmarket Bakery yet, the Santa Ana location remains family friendly as it sees the addition of new menu items, including craft beers and hard ciders. The menu will also feature a new lineup of savory “bar bite” offerings, sandwiches made with fresh-baked breads, seasonal salads and sweet and hearty brunch items (the latter of which will be coming this Spring). Like its Costa Mesa counterpart, which opened in 2012, the Santa Ana restaurant focuses on its made-from-scratch daily retail offerings such as Chef Rachel’s artisanal breads and now-famous “eggywiches,” as well as delectable desserts, including the Total Eclipse Mousse Cake, Cookie Monster Bread Pudding, and her famed Black Widow Tart. Guests will have the opportunity to indulge in Blackmarket signature cookies, including Walnut Mudslides, Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, and the Classic Two Tone.

“Expanding into the Santa Ana market will allow us to serve even more of our community,” explained Chef Rachel, who opened her first Blackmarket Bakery in an industrial park in Irvine back in 2004. “The addition of craft beer and hard cider, as well as an expanded menu of family friendly favorites, gives our Santa Ana location a little something for everyone.”

Blackmarket Bakery Santa Ana will offer Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner daily, as well as a Happy Hour offered Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. During this time, guests can look forward to enjoying small plates to get their evening started. Coming in the spring, guests can also enjoy a relaxing brunch, offered on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p. m., featuring home-style, made-from-scratch offerings including a spin on Eggs Benedict, Oven Pancakes, and Biscuits & Gravy, inspired by Chef Rachel’s Southern upbringing. Daily breakfast and morning pastry service will feature Kean Coffee, Blackmarket will feature locally roasted Kean coffee and espresso beverages, as well as its signature cold-brew iced coffee. The Santa Ana location will begin to accommodate catering for small and large parties in the months following its opening.

Brand new trailer for ZOOTOPIA featuring the all-new original song “Try Everything!”

Celebrate Zoo Year’s Eve with the brand new trailer for ZOOTOPIA featuring the all-new original song “Try Everything,” written by singer-songwriter Sia and songwriting duo Stargate, and performed by Grammy®-winning international superstar Shakira. The single will be available everywhere 1/8.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything.

But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy.

SUPERSTAR — Revered worldwide by herds of fans, Zootopia's biggest pop star Gazelle is a socially conscious celebrity with equal parts talent and heart. Shakira lends her Grammy®-winning voice to the phenom. Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Zootopia" opens in U.S. theaters on March 4, 2016. ©2016 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.
