Jupiter Ascending Movie Review

Jupiter

“It can be difficult for people from underdeveloped worlds to hear that their planet is not the only inhabited planet.”

It can also be difficult for people to put up with underdeveloped scripts and characters. Jupiter Ascending is a messy, uninteresting film that is void of all personality and substance. The film wants so badly to be the next Star Wars, but it doesn’t take the time to give us a reason to care, which hurts the movie out the gate. Coupled with uninteresting characters, too few action scenes that are impossible to keep up with, the film breaks down under its own ambitious goals.

The Wachowski siblings came onto the scene in a big way with The Matrix in 1999, really bringing science fiction back in a big way. It was an ambitious and beautifully made film that showed us directors with a lot of potential and purpose. But oh how the mighty have fallen. Jupiter Ascending is the next in line of a string of misfires on their resume that is making it seem like The Matrix may have been just a fluke. There was a chance to do something special here, but the Wachowskis spend so much time crafting beautiful films, that they forget how to make anything worth telling inside them.

Every character is a flawed, empty vessel. There’s nothing to latch onto with them, and we really don’t have any reason to care. Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that the leads are played Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, most of us simply wouldn’t care. Kunis’ character Jupiter should be strong willed and fun to watch, and while she’s strong willed, she seems to spend too much of the film being a damsel in distress who is endlessly gullible, playing right into the hands of the villains. Kunis is as good as she can be with the material given to her, but there’s not much for her to work with. The same can be said for Tatum, who tries his best to be good in the film, no matter how stilted or awkward the film gets. They’re the two most likable things in the film, and they’re not enough to carry this mess of a film home.

It’s just too bad that the Wachowskis also manage to get the worst performance out of Eddie Redmayne, who is currently in the running for an Academy Award for The Theory of Everything. His performance is so incredibly bad, it’s almost hard to watch. He mumbles and whispers everything, except for the occasional burst of screaming, and he just looks like he doesn’t want to be anywhere near this film. It almost feels like he feels it’s beneath him, and it shows painfully that he just doesn’t care. He’s laughably bad at all times, cringeworthy almost all the way though, and it really hurts not just the film, but his career as well.

The worst part isn’t even the acting though, because it’s the film’s action and lack of story as well. When the film spends time setting up a story that really goes no where, it gets into bursts of action that really don’t help the film. When it should be fun, it’s just loud and overlong, and it makes it hard to tell what’s happening at all times. There’s not sense of geography to anything, making it frustrating to deal with. There was so much fun stuff that could have been done with the film, and yet it basically squanders all the possibilities by undermining itself.

Really though, the biggest problem of all is that the film tries to over explain everything, instead of letting the world it’s setting up just be. The over explanation of everything starts to become exhausting, making the experience feel dull. Not only that, but the things that are being explained aren’t even what really are the most important parts, so the story just gets very little love or care. So as characters turn on characters, you simply don’t care because you don’t know why they’re turning on each other. It’s such a jumbled mess, that by the time it’s over, you simply feel bored and annoyed by it all.

Jupiter Ascending Is a film that wants to be big and exciting, ushering in a new wave of science fiction and fantasy films. But all it’ll manage to do is hurt the genre, and we can only hope it won’t take the careers of its actors down with it. Tatum and Kunis try as they might to salvage their characters given what they have to work with, but it’s not enough. There’s just no two ways around it, this film is a mess from beginning to end, and outside of its score by Michael Giacchino, it’s better being left in the past and not being remembered. The Wachowskis used to have so much potential, but now it’s clear that they’re more concerned about the spectacle than the story, creating soulless narratives that just don’t matter. There’s nothing worse than seeing talent fall so far, but they have, and Jupiter Ascending is the sad cautionary tale for any director of what not to become.

Dirty Dancing Will Sashay Into Your Heart

IMG_2746

Hot, sensual, campy and fun are words I would describe the musical Dirty Dancing, which is currently playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Everyone is familiar with the movie version with the sexy Patrick Swayze, and now it can be seen live on stage! However, did it live up to its movie counterpart?

In case you’re not familiar the story is about a girl, Baby (played by Jillian Mueller), and her family who go on a three-week vacation at a resort in the Catskills; think of summer camp with the family. There she meets Johnny, (Samuel Pergande) a ballroom dancer who teaches her how to dance. There is an iconic lift in the middle and Baby’s father discovers the blossoming romance and forbids Baby from ever associating with him.

The musical in general stuck very true to the movie; heck they even tried to recreate the scene where Johnny and Baby are in the water attempting a lift, which is probably the most iconic scene of the movie. Overall it was a very pleasant experience.

The good:

The dancing! Boy I’ll hand it to all of the actors on stage; they were all fantastic dancers! From the opening scene with a sultry number I knew I was in for a good time. You can tell all of the dancers are well trained; they were all on point and I could not tell of any mistakes. By the time I left the theatre I was ready to sign up for my own ballroom classes (I wouldn’t mind it if it were the actor playing Johnny or Penny). Besides the dancing the music was good too; they had a live band playing and a few of the actors would take the lead. I was completely floored by Jenlee Shallow and Doug Carpenter; their voices are pure gold! Shallow had numbers throughout the show and I was amazed by all of her talent, you could tell she was really passionate. I was ready to jump out of my seat whenever she’d finish her number. Towards the end of the show Carpenter began to sing more; his rendition of “In the Still of the Night” was absolutely phenomenal! Carpenter can sing to me any time he wants haha.

So piggybacking the music, there were only a few actors that would normally sing and this short list did not include the main leads. I was expecting this to be a musical; ie leads and ensemble have songs that are used to carry a story. Boy was I wrong! This is more of an experience with music to help set the mood. It was more of the passion between the dancers. The only flaw of this adaptation are the scene changes; in the film it is easier to switch locations/ scenes just by cutting two and placing them together; however, this is a little more difficult to do so on stage. I appreciated the effort that was made, but at times I was confused when an actor would walk away towards a different part of the stage. It would take me a bit to realize that the scene had effectively changed by the different positions; It did help that there was a screen that projected different sceneries. At times it worked and others were just plain awkward; for example, that iconic scene where Baby and Johnny intent the lift while in the water was unremarkable. They brought down a screen in front of the actors and projected a field and water and the actors would effectively be in those settings. It would have been an ingenious way to recreate those scenes, but the actors were barely visible through the screen that much of the magic was lost.

Overall the show was quite enjoyable. It was campy, fun, and definitely passionate. Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage is highly recommended and it is currently playing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts from February 3rd to the 15th. You do not want to miss this fantastic adaptation and like they say: “nobody puts Baby in the corner.”

El Amerikano Introduces New Menu Items with Rustic, Latin Flair

Fullerton-based El Amerikano, which features a menu of New American Cuisine with a Latin flair, introduces new protein-driven dishes nuanced with South American flavors and brought to life by fresh herbs, house-made rubs, and cheeses. Much like its geographic location in Orange County, El Amerikano is a melting pot of flavors. Notable about El Amerikano’s menu is Chef Konstantine Marougas’ style of blending classic American cooking with non-traditional techniques, and layering each dish with Latin American flavors. New dishes added to the menu include Warm Mushroom Salad, Cucumber Ceviche, Brussels Sprouts with House-Made Chorizo and Imported Cotija; Braised-then-Seared Lamb Shoulder paired with Cabbage Escabeche and Crema Fresca; and Slow Roasted Angus Choice Prime Rib Nachos paired with House-Made Red Chipotle Chimichurri.

“I’m passionate about creating dishes that give guests sensations of both comfort and excitement,” commented Chef Konstantine, who also oversees the kitchen at adjacent sister concept, Kentro Greek Kitchen. “This duality can be seen in my new dishes, which intend to deliver a sense of contentment, but also evoke pleasure and enjoyment.”

At the center of Chef Konstantine’s menu is the El Amerikano grill, which is reminiscent of a Latin American parilla, and its abundance of Asado, which gives dishes a charred and smoky depth. New menu additions include grilled specialties like Chef Konstantine’s signature Asada Brava – angus choice rib eye seasoned with El Amerikano’s own house-made Latin rub. This rustic dish is paired with a take on creamed corn with nuts tossed with cumin, Mexican oregano, and cayenne, and finished with cheese folded in. The Al Pastor Chop, a char-grilled pork chop with Chef Konstantine’s made-from-scratch “al pastor glaze,” sizzles off the grill and is paired with a refreshing, yet spicy farro salad with house-made jalapeno vinaigrette with poblano chilies and sweet peppers. The Rib Eye Picado with tender sliced pieces of Rib Eye, boasts a house-blended Latin Spice, a unique combination of ingredients including cayenne, bay leaves, and paprika in lime. The noted grill also enhances El Amerikano’s Michoacan Caesar, which features crisp heads of romaine, char-grilled then plated with fire-roasted corn, cotija cheese, pepitas and house-made Caesar dressing.

Many dishes also see the addition of a house-made “Latin Butter,” which is whipped with guajillo, pasilla, garlic and cotija cheese. Prevalent in the Madre Rice and Amerikano Fries, Latin Butter complements with contrast by adding a spicy, yet smoky depth to these dishes. This Latin butter is used to coat and season the slow-roasted Rib Eye, which is then sliced thin and used on El Amerikano’s take on a classic American wedge salad.

“El Amerikano is my interpretation of the diverse landscape that surrounds us,”

explained Owner Vasili Kotsiovos, who opened El Amerikano in Spring 2014, after achieving success with his first concept, Kentro Greek Kitchen, which opened in 2011. “The menu is influenced by California’s vibrant and diversified Latin landscape – a blending of cultures and flavors, on a plate.”

El Amerikano is located in Fullerton (100 South Harbor Blvd., Suite D) and is open daily from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. More information is available online at http://elamerikano.com/.

FANTASTIC FOUR NEW Teaser Trailer Released!

F42

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.

Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

It’s very interesting taking in this new teaser. The first thing of note is how different it looks stylistically from Fox’s first two Fantastic Four films, which may be a blessing in disguise. However, there’s a small worry that maybe the tone of the film is too far in the other direction this time around, being incredibly serious and gritty, moving too far away from the campy nature of the first two. Hopefully it’s just the way the teaser plays out, and the movie doesn’t feel as bleak as the teaser shows. It really gives a very strong Interstellar vibe, and this really does feel different than any other comic book films out there right now.

The one thing that I will say is it feels like it’ll be a nice compliment to Fox’s X-Men series, which will be great if they manage to merge the two brands together down the line. It’ll be interesting to see if they manage that, because I like what Trank seems to have envisioned here. The film looks gorgeous, and his cast is fantastic. There’s so much great talent in front of and behind the camera, that this could end up being one of the biggest surprises of the year. We just have to hope that everything comes together, and all those rumors of behind the scenes turmoil were false, because this film could end up being very special.

Fantastic Four, starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell, is set to be released on August 7, 2015.

Kingsman: The Secret Service Movie Review

Kingsman

Spy movies are a dime a dozen. There’s so many, you have to be truly unique to standout for the audience to take notice. Matthew Vaughn has not only taken the challenge, but he may have just made every other spy series obsolete with Kingsman: The Secret Service. The film has the DNA of the Roger Moore era James Bond films, turning the tropes level up to 11, and letting the violence and insanity of it all play out in a way we’ve never quite seen before. It’s a loving send up to the spy genre in the same way that Vaughn similarly did to the superhero genre with Kick-Ass, but this really feels like the stronger film.

Vaughn has a very particular eye and outlook, and his films always feel different than all the others around. Kingsman feels like it has caffeine flowing through its veins, because from its opening moments, the movie doesn’t stop, never lets up, and just gets crazy. There’s a frantic nature to it that actually feels similar to that of what Wright did with The Cornetto trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and that nature really carries the film. The self aware nature of it all really helps as well, because it really gives the film the chance to be over the top, cheesy, and completely ridiculous, but we completely buy into it all. Even if there’s absolutely no way that the most over the top scenes could happen, Vaughn made the film so dynamic and fun, it feels like it could happen in this world.

But this also has a fantastic cast that helps flesh out the world as well. Colin Firth is having a blast as Harry Hart, and the role is so different than what we’re used to seeing him in, which makes it that much more fun. Seeing Mr. Darcy shooting people and causing mayhem makes it all that much sweeter. This film really belongs to Taron Egerton, who plays Eggsy, a charming and fantastic relative newcomer who turns out to be one of the film’s biggest highlights. He’s very charismatic, manages to go toe-to-toe with Firth, Jackson, Strong, and Caine, and still shines. He’s definitely a rising, and it’s great Vaughn discovered him. His character learns and grows so much, really getting fleshed out by the time the credits close, and his transformation is feels natural, as well as earned.

A good spy movie is only as good as its villain though, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Valentine and his henchwoman Gazelle are two of the most fun villains in some time. Jackson’s Valentine character is the stereotypical Bond villain, but he has a small quirk: he hates violence and blood. It’s hilarious, and it makes the character so much fun to watch. It helps that the cheesy nature of the character with the lisp and his whole outlook is just insane, you can’t help but love him even though he’s completely crazy. Gazelle has a great presence as well, thanks to Sofia Boutella and the character’s cool sword legs. These archetypes are so fitting from what we expect from a Bond film, seeing them being so overdone is absolutely ridiculous and fun.

Really though, you can’t talk about a spy film without mentioning the action, and Vaughn brings that in spades here. Kingsman features some of the most well put together, exciting, and flat out fun set pieces that have been on film in some time. There’s just a real crazy nature to it all, and every action scene is different, well choreographed, and memorable. The actors really throw themselves into it all, and you can tell they had a blast. It’s that feel that also gives the film it’s semi off kilter humor, which should be expected from any Vaughn film.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is violent, offensive, funny, and absolutely crazy, everything you could want from a Matthew Vaughn spy film. The film is an almost satirical look at the Bond series, and it works so well. Filled with spectacular action, a great cast led by Firth and Egerton, this is one of the best surprises in some time. Vaughn has continually proved what a spectacular filmmaker he is, and this may be his strongest offering yet. This movie deserves a lot of love, and it’s great to see a hard R rated action film in theaters again.
