WAYNE’S WORLD
Synopsis: Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name, Wayne’s World is a wacky, irreverent pop-culture comedy about the adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey).   From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere).   Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra. Director Penelope Spheeris, Myers and Carvey hang a lot of silly, but funny, jokes on this thin plot, and the energy of the cast—as well as the wild pop-culture references—make Wayne’s World a cut above the average Saturday Night Live spin-off movie.

Wayne’s World debuts on Blu-ray with a decent but at times uninspired 1080p, 1.78:1-framed transfer that generally passes for average-at-best high definition material. Detail is adequate, but nothing ever stands out as too terribly eye-catching. Colors are decent if not a bit faded in appearance, particularly during the film’s darker segments that tend to obscure detail, be it in clothing or the objects scattered around the “Wayne’s World” set. However, the transfer suddenly reveals more in the way of color and detail during some later segments of the film, noticeably during a sequence at a garage in chapter four.

WAYNE’S WORLD 2
Synopsis: The success of their TV show allows Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) to finally move out of their parents’ homes, but now they have to figure out what to do with their lives. Wayne’s girlfriend, up-and-coming rock star Cassandra (Tia Carrere), is enjoying a career boost thanks to her new manager Bobby Cohn (Christopher Walker), but Garth thinks that Bobby is more interested in her body than her place on the charts. Meanwhile, Wayne is visited in a dream by the late Jim Morrison (Michael A. Nickles), who convinces him to promote a massive rock festival, “Waynestock,” featuring Aerosmith as headliners.   Garth, on the other hand, is finally relieved of his pesky virginity by femme fatale Honey Hornee (Kim Basinger), though it turns out that Honey has a hidden agenda.   Drew Barrymore, Harry Shearer, and Charlton Heston play cameo roles in Wayne’s World 2, and Jay Leno, Rip Taylor, and Todd Rundgren appear as themselves.

Wayne’s World 2 comes to Blu-ray with a decent Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. From the very first notes over the opening credits, a palpable difference between this soundtrack and that of its predecessor is noticeable, this one heftier and more robust, with a greater sense of warmth and space to it.

MajorLgue_BRD_3D.jpg

MAJOR LEAGUE
Synopsis: She’s beautiful, smart, goal-oriented, and she just inherited the Cleveland Indians.  Unfortunately, she wants to move the franchise to Miami, and a losing season is her only ticket to Florida.   So she signs the wildest gang of screwballs that ever spit tobacco. They’re handsome, but they’re hopeless! Her catcher (Tom Berenger) is a washed-up womanizer who struck out in life.   Her ace pitcher (Charlie Sheen) is a punked-out crazy who struck out with the law. And her third baseman (L.A. Law’s Corbin Bernsen) is more concerned fielding endorsements than grounders.  Throw in a busload of other misfits and you’ve got yourself a hilarious line-up that’s destined for disaster! Or is it?

This Blu-ray edition of Major League makes the call to the bullpen and sends in a fine selection of bonus materials.

Special Features:
Commentary by Writer/Director David S. Ward and producer Chris Chesser
My Kinda Team
A Major League Look at Major League

BlackSheep_BRD_3D.jpg

BLACK SHEEP
Synopsis: Mike Donnelly (Chris Farley) is dedicated to helping his big brother Al (Tim Matheson) win the race for Washington State governor, he turns every opportunity for votes into an embarrassing disaster.   Campaign aide and super slacker Steve Dodds (David Spade) volunteers to baby-sit Mike. Big mistake! When Mike discovers that the incumbent governor is a crook, he dives headfirst into a whole new level of well-intended destruction.   Chris Farley and David Spade, the stars of Tommy Boy, once again show why they are “the comedy team of the ’90s!” (Leo Quinones, KIIS-FM). Directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World) and costarring Gary Busey, Black Sheep is “a crowd-pleaser directed with maximum energy!” (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Featuring an electrifying performance by super Seattle band Mudhoney!

Paramount’s Blu-ray release of Black Sheep delivers surprisingly good results. Presented in 1080p high definition and framed inside 1.78:1 window, the transfer never misses a beat, remaining lively and natural throughout. The transfer reveals above-average levels of detail in most every shot. Bright, outdoor scenes fare extraordinarily well, as the texture of the street pavement, tree trunks, the political banners and signs, clothing, and all sorts of objects are rendered nicely and appear natural and lifelike. This Blu-ray release of Black Sheep offers absolutely no extra content.

WITHOUT A PADDLE
Synopsis:Three childhood friends go into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure.  They take a canoe upriver and everything that can go wrong, does.  Hunted by two backwoods farmers, they encounter death-defying rapids, tree-hugging hippie chicks and a crazy old mountain man played by Burt Reynolds.

The original Without a Paddle boasts a nice trio of comedy actors with Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, and Dax Shepard. In an offbeat comedy movie like this, having some star power certainly helps add some meat to the entertainment. Known talent separates Without a Paddle with the follow up, Nature’s Calling, which had a much less familiar cast, with a very similar storyline. Though neither movie is a classic, there are some laughs if you are in a lighthearted Friday night mood.

Commentary by Director Steven Brill

For the first time ever, two full-length movies featuring some of the network’s favorite young stars come together in a single disc for one low price! Dadnapped and Hatching Pete will provide viewers with hours of wholesome, hilarious entertainment, as well as a bevy of exclusive bonus features not available anywhere else.

Top-flight Disney Channel talent shines in a pair of the network’s signature productions as Emily Osment, star of the hit Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, and David Henrie of Wizards of Waverly Place headline Dadnapped, an action-packed, thrill-a-minute comedy. Then a pair of tween faves rules the roost when Jason Dolley, of Cory in the House and Minutemen, and Mitchell Musso, of Hannah Montana, star in the screwball comedy Hatching Pete, a tale of fame, friendship and “fowl” play.

In Dadnapped, fourteen year-old Melissa (Emily Osment) is struggling with a unique kind of sibling rivalry. To get her father Neil’s (George Newburn) attention, she has to compete with teenage spy Tripp Zoome, the main character in her father’s best selling novels. Her dad spends so much time on his imaginary son’s exciting missions that even Melissa’s special daughter-dad vacation gets interrupted by a promotional event for Neil’s newest book. But when Neil is abducted by overzealous fanboys and falls into the clutches of a pair of sinister brothers, the fictional Tripp can’t save him and Melissa will have to try to channel her “inner Zoome” to rescue her dad.

A bashful high school student finds fames as a high-flying poultry impersonator in Hatching Pete. Pete’s (Jason Dolley) best friend Poole (Mitchel Musso) wants to keep up his family’s longstanding tradition of playing their high school mascot, the Chicken, but Poole is allergic to the costume. Pete agrees to stand in for his pal, but only on the condition that his identity remains a secret. The anonymity of the Chicken suit gives Pete the freedom he’s always dreamed of and a whole new personality emerges. His unexpectedly outrageous antics make the Chicken an instant celebrity— except no one knows it’s Pete. As Poole reaps the benefits of his pal’s talent, Pete must decide if it’s time to reveal that he’s the man behind the beak.

Fifth Grade Class Wins Disney’s Environmentality Challenge with Wood Duck Conservation Project

Lynda Raquel’s fifth grade John Muir Elementary School class from Stockton won first place in Disney’s Environmentality Challenge with an all-expense paid trip to Disneyland and will star in a parade down Main Street U.S.A. For the winning class project, which focused on the conservation of the Wood Duck, the students restored two vandalized nesting boxes for local Wood Ducks who suffer from a dwindling population in Stockton’s Lodi Lake area.  To drive awareness, they created a web site and “duckumentary” about the cause which they screened in the community.  Proceeds from the screening were donated to local wildlife agencies.

Beth Stevens, senior vice president of Environmental Affairs at The Walt Disney Company, Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Marge Kohler, Acting Deputy Regional Director U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and AG Kawamura, Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture honored the winning students at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. The celebration on Friday May 8, included:

  1. A ceremony honoring the students
  2. A parade down Main Street U.S.A
  3. Q&A sessions with the students and environmental state and federal dignitaries

The educational program, which targets fifth graders in California, Florida, Hong Kong, and the Cayman Islands, encourages environmental stewardship by asking students to take an environmental pledge and complete a class project which targets a real-world environmental challenge in their community. Movie Review: "My Life In Ruins"

From Nia Vardalos, writer and star of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” comes the uplifting comedy “My Life in Ruins.” Georgia (Nia Vardalos) has lost her kefi (Greek for “mojo”). Discouraged by her lack of direction in life, she works as a travel guide, leading a rag-tag group of tourists as she tries to show them the beauty of her native Greece while waiting to land her dream job. Opening their eyes to an exotic foreign land, she too begins to see things in new ways—finding her kefi and possibly love in the process.

The world was first introduced to Nia Vardalos in 2002 with her surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which she wrote and starred in. Vardalos’s infectious charm and love for her characters permeated throughout the film, making it one of the most endearing romantic comedies in recent memory. The film seemed like the perfect career vehicle to establish Vardalos as a mainstream Hollywood actress. Since then, instead of capitalizing on her newfound fame, she keeps going back to her calling card, the misunderstood Greek American. First, she unsuccessfully tried to turn My Big Fat Greek Wedding into a television show, My Big Fat Greek Life, and now has made My Life In Ruins, which is being marketed as “the My Big Fat Greek Wedding girl goes back to Greece.” I am starting to feel this girl is like one of those one hit wonder bands who keep remaking and remixing their only hit over and over again, how many different versions of the Macarena are really necessary? The same applies here.

My Life In Ruins is a contrived attempt at recapturing the success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and is met with some pretty inept results. Nia Vardalos’s character, Georgia, is a Greek American tour guide in Greece who is frustrated by the quality of her tourists. The film tries to find comedy in her tour group, but misses much more often than it hits. The story tries to incorporate every type of annoying tourist into one bus and the results are just as irritating as they would be in real life. The problem is the film doesn’t have the same affection for these characters’ quirks in the way My Big Fat Greek Wedding does. The organic connection, which brings that film together is completely missing in this jumbled second attempt. The same goes for the love story that develops between Vardalos’s tour guide character and her bus driver Poupi (yes his name is a poop joke) who can’t seem to find a spark. After such a great debut effort, this film falls to the wayside among the countless other romantic comedies without anything truly original to offer.

Scooby-Doo Where Are You Volume 2: Bump In the Night

A haunted amusement park, a dog-napping operation and an ape man who disrupts a movie set are some of the zany predicaments the Mystery Inc. gang encounters on Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Vol. 2, available now on DVD from Warner Home Video (WHV).  This second collection of classic Scooby-Doo cartoons features four episodes from the original.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! first made its debut during CBS’ Saturday morning lineup and became an instant hit.   The series follows the adventures of Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, Velma and Scooby-Doo as they solve cases typically involving ghosts, monsters or other supernatural forces. Hi-jinks always ensue, with their investigations resulting in entertaining chase scenes mixed with catchy musical numbers and comedic antics. This hit program spawned several spin-off series, specials, consumer products and live action films.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Vol. 2 features the following episodes:

Decoy for a Dognapper – When several top show dogs are stolen, including a pedigreed female dog Scooby falls for, the kids go after a $500 reward offered by one of the dogs’ owners — it is up to Scooby-Doo to be a decoy for the dognappers.

What the Hex Going On? – A friend invites the gang to spend the weekend at her family’s estate, the Kingston Mansion, but a ghost turns up and changes her Uncle Stewart into an old man.

Never Ape an Ape Man – Daphne’s Uncle Maxwell, a movie director, hires the entire gang as extras in his new film: The Ape Man of Forbidden Mountain.  Although the film is shooting on-location, the set is soon closed when a real ape man shows up and wreaks havoc on the set.

Foul Play in Funland – The gang highly anticipates the opening of a new amusement park, but while clam-digging outside of it, the gang see the rides moving not only before the park is open, but with no passengers, as well.  Drawn into another mystery, the gang sets out to see if the park is haunted.

The four episodes are familiar and fun-filled, but would rather have all of the show’s episodes in one convenient set. So if you are looking for a few laughs from the original Scooby-Doo series, this release is worth checking out.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button represents cinema at its finest. Recounting a simple tale; easing the burden of, but not eliminating, the more weighty and deeper complexities of the narrative; and presented with tenderness and affection for the story, the characters, and the medium of film itself. Though failing to capture the Best Picture Oscar in a year featuring several deserving films, there is no doubt that it will continue to be recognized as a monumental accomplishment in filmmaking for its approach, themes, acting, and special effects. The Criterion Collection presents The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Blu-ray with stellar results, the disc easily one of the best overall packages on the market. This disc easily and enthusiastically earns our highest recommendation.

Grease_BRD_3D.jpg

Synopsis: John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease.  Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta’s naive love interest.   The impressive supporting cast reads like a “who’s who” in this quintessential musical about the fabulous ’50s.   Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade–it’s an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock ‘n’ roll!

Special Features:

  1. Commentary by Director Randal Kleiser and choreographer Patricia Birch
  2. Introduction by Randal Kleiser
  3. Rydell Sing-Along
  4. Deleted/Extended/Alternate Scenes with introduction by Randal Kleiser

There is no doubt that Grease must be one of the most watched or heard film musicals of all time. It is not a great movie by any means – certainly not at the level of Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, or Evita for that matter. It is however a fun easy kind of movie that anyone can enjoy. It does not take itself seriously, but just seeks to entertain us. If you are a fan of Grease, I would suggest a strong buy for the improved picture and sound quality.

FBDO_BRD_3D.jpg

Synopsis: High-schooler Ferris Bueller (Mathew Broderick), his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara), and his best bud Cameron (Alan Ruck) are off on the spontaneous romp through Chicago known as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. You’ll also enjoy righteous bonus materials that give you an insider’s peek at this hilarious comedy hit from John Hughes (Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Sixteen Candles).   So, barf up a lung, forge a “sick note” from the parents, and tag along on the funniest adventure to ever sweep through the Windy City.   What are you still doing here? Save Ferris!

Special Features:

  1. Getting the Class Together – The Cast of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  2. The Making of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  3. Who is Ferris Bueller?

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off resides among the best the Comedy genre has to offer. Paramount has done right by the film’s Blu-ray releasing, providing a good video transfer, a surprisingly robust and clear soundtrack, and a few extras. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes highly recommended.

Named the “Bueller…Bueller…Edition,” this Blu-ray release of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off isn’t absent special features, but it certainly doesn’t earn an A for quantity, either. Getting the Class Together — The Cast of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ takes a fairly interesting and strong look at the assembly of the cast, told through both classic and retrospective interviews. The Making of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ is another piece the combines both classic and retrospective interviews that this time look at the making of several scenes in the film, accompanied by behind-the-scenes photographs and clips from the movie. Who is Ferris Bueller?  looks at the qualities that define the film’s title character, told through interview clips and film footage.

Now through June 3, Southern California families (zip codes 90000-93599 in California, 21000-22999 in Baja California) will find the best value at Disneyland Resort by purchasing the “Southern California 2fer Ticket,” which enables guests to visit either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure one day, then come back on another day to play in the other park, for free! Information is available at www.disneyland.com or by calling (714) 781-7290.

For those planning a multi-day getaway at Disneyland Resort, there’s the “2 Nights Free” offer. Guests who purchase a three-night summer vacation package – three nights of hotel accommodations and three days of theme park admission – will receive two more nights at the hotel and two more days of theme park admission. That’s a total of five days and nights of Disneyland fun for the price of three. Details on these packages are available at www.disneyland.com or by calling (800) 854-3104.

These travel values are in addition to the first-of-its-kind “Free on Your Birthday” offer – one day’s free admission to a Disneyland Resort park with valid ID. More details and online registration for Free on Your Birthday are available at www.disneyparks.com.

Guests who take advantage of these value offers will find plenty of fun at Disneyland Resort, including new celebration experiences.

At Disneyland: Dancing in the Streets, Roundup and Barbecue at Big Thunder Ranch

The whole family can join the action with two new immersive shows this spring at Disneyland. Celebrate! A Street Party is a dazzling street show featuring a cast of nearly 100 dancers, DJs and Disney characters inviting guests along the Disneyland parade route to celebrate with them as they perform more than a dozen musical numbers in a lively presentation that allows some guests to show off their own dance moves in a conga line or twist party.

The best place at the Resort for hearty mouth-watering barbecue fare is Celebration Roundup and Barbecue, a spot where guests can celebrate their special occasions ranch-style with Woody and Jessie from “Toy Story,” Chip ‘n Dale and festive, country entertainment with live musicians. Located at Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland, Celebration Roundup and Barbecue features family-style table service with a menu of barbecue chicken and ribs, corn cob wheels, ranch beans, cole slaw, cornbread, watermelon slices and a unique surprise dessert.

Food & Wine Festival: At Disney’s California Adventure and Resort Hotels

At Disney’s California Adventure park, guests will enjoy the fourth annual Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival, a celebration of the international cultures, people, food and traditions that have made California one of the most diverse culinary destinations in the world. From April 24 through June 7, the Festival features more than 600 experiences, many of them complimentary, including wine and spirits seminars, culinary demonstrations and a Junior Chef program for children. Food and wine aficionados will get tips from award-winning Disneyland Resort chefs, noted winemakers and celebrity chefs such as Guy Fieri. Unique ticketed events include “World Celebration” dinners, two nights of the gala finale “Taste, Food-Wine-Life” and intimate receptions with stars of the food and wine world. Information and reservations for ticketed events are available at www.disneyland.com/foodandwine.

Even More Ways to Celebrate at Disneyland Resort

Aspiring young princesses (and knights) will get the full fairy-tale treatment at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, new in Fantasyland at Disneyland. Young girls are greeted by their very own Fairy Godmother-in-training who will magically transform them into the princesses of their dreams with a makeover including hairstyles, make-up and jewels. For boys, a magical experience transforms them into gallant young knights.

At Disney’s California Adventure park, guests will find a new lineup at Games of the Boardwalk, along the Paradise Pier Midway. The games, themed to Disney characters for the first time, include “Goofy About Fishin’,” a ball-pitch “Casey at the Bat,” a “Bullseye Stallion Stampede” horse race, and a water-spray “Dumbo Bucket Brigade.”

The Disneyland Resort features two theme parks plus the Downtown Disney District comprised of unique dining, entertainment and shopping experiences. The Resort’s three hotels are the luxurious 745-room Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the magical 988-room Disneyland Hotel and the “day-at-the-beach” fun of the 489-room Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.
