Blu-Ray DVD Releases For Tuesday, April 14

MeanGirls_BRD_3D.jpg

Originally released in 2004, Mean Girls releases on Blu-ray on April 14th from Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment and Director Mark Waters. Perhaps Lindsay Lohan’s greatest acting, this movie tells the story about a girl raised in the African bush country by her zoologist parents who finds the transition from being home-schooled, to the riggers of public high school, to be her greatest challenge.

Mean Girls is one of Lohan’s best performances, if not the best. It is nice to look back at an earlier role in her acting portfolio. Her youthful, enthusiastic, and healthy personality was much more pleasing and she definitely helped make Mean Girls a fun and entertaining movie. Rachel McAdams is great as a “mean girl” and the SNL elite deliver nice supporting roles.

The Mean Girls Blu-ray includes great special features:

  1. Commentary by Director Mark Waters, Screenplay Writer & Actress Tina Fey, and Producer Lorne Michaels
  2. Word Vomit (Blooper Reel)
  3. So Fetch (Deleted Scenes)

LastKiss_BRD_3D.jpg

The Last Kiss is an interesting comedy-drama movie from the Oscar-winning writer of Million Dollar Baby and Director Tony Goldwyn, that explores complicated relationships and the emotions that are very real for many people. Originally released in 2006, this film is now available on Blu-ray April 14th from DreamWorks Home Entertainment.

The Last Kiss is brilliantly original. The story likely hits home with many people because of its genuine and honest exploration of relationships and the human emotion. Zach Braff is great as the mixed up and then ashamed Michael. Tom Wilkinson and Blythe Banner also give very respectable performances. Jacinda Barrett and Rachel Bilson are solid as Michael’s competing love interests. Casey Affleck also reminds us why he is a great actor. The Last Kiss is a compelling movie because it has moments that are uncomfortably real, and you find yourself rooting for certain characters and hoping for the right conclusions.

Special features in The Last Kiss Blu-ray include:

  1. Director and cast commentaries featuring Zach Braff, Jacinda Barret and Rachel Bilson
  2. Deleted Scenes
  3. Cary Brothers’ “Ride” music video directed by Zach Braff
  4. The Last Kiss – Behind Our Favorite Scenes
  5. Gag Reel

StrngWldns_BRD_3D.jpg

Paramount Studios Home Entertainment released the Happy Madison Productions movie Strange Wilderness on Blu-ray April 14th, directed by Fred Wolf. Peter Gaulke (Steve Zahn) is a dim-witted wildlife TV show host with a band of misfits on his crew. Threatened with cancellation because of low ratings, Peter puts together a plan to track the legendary creature Bigfoot.

Strange Wilderness also stars Justin Long, Allen Covert, Jonah Hill, Kevin Heffernan, Ashley Scott, Peter Dante, Harry Hamlin, Robert Patrick, Jeff Garlin, Ernest Borgnine and Joe Don Baker.

Strange Wilderness is definitely among the more strange productions from Adam Sandler’s company. It is also one of the more crude. There really aren’t even that many laughs. The tough part is to determine an appropriate market for the film. Perhaps a Friday or Saturday night gathering of college friends might be the right fit for this story.

The Strange Wilderness Blu-ray includes these special features:

  • Cooker’s Song
  • The Turkey
  • What Do We Do
  • Reel Comedy: Strange Wilderness
  • Deleted Scenes

ArcticTale_BRD_3D.jpg

Arctic Tale is an amazing new Blu-ray release from Paramount Home Entertainment and National Geographic Films. Available on Blu-ray April 21st, this beautiful and educational film presentation shows off the vast snow kingdom at the top of the world. From the same people who brought us March of the Penguins, this real-life adventure is natural, touching, and personally connected.

Queen Latifah does a nice job as the Arctic Tale storyteller. I was a little cautious at first as to the quality of her voice for such a film, but she brings great personality to the animals and their unique stories. Arctic Tale is a captive tale suitable for the whole family. There are a couple moments that are sad, and of course there are hunts for live food, so be aware if you have especially sensitive children. Though these moments are presented as tactfully as possible.

Get more out of the Arctic Tale Blu-ray with these special features:

  • Making of Arctic Tale
  • “Are We There Yet? World Adventure: Polar Bear Spotting”
  • Theatrical Trailer HD

Observe and Report Movie Review

I went into Observe and Report expecting another filthy, raunchy comedy typical to what Seth Rogen has done before. If you know his prior works, then you know exactly what I am talking about. I am a huge fan of most of the films Seth Rogen and his clan of friends have done before, but unfortunately Observe and Report didn’t deliver anything new. This film was not written by Rogen like many of the films he is featured in even though this film is very similar to his others. However, I am sure director and writer Jody Hill knew the style in which Seth Rogen would make a perfect match. Lately I have seen quite a few comedies with the same type of over-the-top comedy and it may have persuaded my feelings toward this movie. Nonetheless, throughout the entire film I kept asking myself, “Haven’t I seen this before?”

Many critics have already related this new mall cop film to Kevin James’s Paul Blart’s Mall Cop film that came out in January. This is not what I meant by saying that I have seen this before. In fact, I never saw Paul Blart, but rather feel that Jody Hill is just trying to profit off of past successful Seth Rogen’s movies by using the same recipe. Sure, Paul Blart’s Mall Cop has a similar plot with a similar mall cop character, but I wouldn’t be worried about that if you want to see Observe and Report. It’s Seth Rogen doing what he does best except we have seen him do this before with a better screenplay. This time there just isn’t much substance.

Seth Rogen is a mall cop, Ronnie Barnhardt, at the Forest Ridge Mall in New Mexico. He is very proud to be Head of Security as he lets it get to his head. Ronnie loves his authority and thinks of himself as an almighty police officer, but he is actually just another mall cop whose sole purpose is to just observe and report the customers in the mall.“Ronnie takes his job far too seriously,” Seth Rogen stated in an interview. “He’s sees the mall where he works as the world—you get the sense that he doesn’t leave very often.”

Ronnie bluntly is a not-so-smart loser living with his alcoholic mother, Celia Weston, whom he loves very much. There is of course the love story with Brandi, played by Scary Movie star Anna Farris, who plays a “hot” blonde working in cosmetics that Ronnie is deeply infatuated with. Brandi is one of those stereotypical Sorority type party animals that does not know when to stop drinking. When a flasher arrives to the mall and starts terrorizing customers, Ronnie realizes this is his chance to win her over. There is always that other girl too that he doesn’t notice right in front of him the entire time. Nothing new here.

Okay, so the plot is not anything special. Fortunately, there are quite a few laugh-out-loud moments and very memorable scenes. On the other hand, if you thought the full frontal nudity in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was bad; Observe and Report beats that exponentially. This is no CGI blue penis either. I’m talking about long shots of a fat man running around a mall with his tiny package flopping around at every leap.

The cast does a great job working with what they were given though. Ray Liotta fits right in as the detective that comes in after a burglary. Anna Farris executes her character perfectly, and the sidekicks of Ronnie, the other rent-a-cops, do a fantastic job. Although, by the end I still felt like they missed the benchmark.

If you get past the male genitals and the jokes, there is nothing else to this movie. Then again, it is Seth Rogen’s Mall Cop after all. Although I laughed… a little, and I think the 18 to 24-year-old college market will get some enjoyment out of it, I don’t see this being another one of Rogen’s classics.

Doubt comes to DVD and Blu-ray

Synoposis: Set in 1964 at St. Nicholas Church in the Bronx, Fr. Brendan Flynn’s (Philip Seymour Hoffman) progressive views and charismatic presence have won him the respect and admiration of the congregation. At the parish school, principal Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) keeps her students in line with old-fashioned fear and intimidation. When young Sister James (Amy Adams) shares with Sister Aloysius her concern that that Father Flynn has “taken an interest” in twelve-year-old Donald Miller (Joseph Foster), the school’s “first Negro student,” the older nun launches her own investigation. Determined to protect every one of her charges, Sister Aloysius attempts to use the evidence she discovers to have Flynn removed from the school. John Patrick Shanley’s finely shaded script takes audiences through a spectrum of truth, emotion and belief, and asks if any decision is ever free from doubt.

From producer Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men) and Miramax Films, Doubt, one of the most riveting and talked about films of the year, comes to DVD and Blu-ray™ Hi-Def on April 7, 2009 from Miramax Films. The recipient of five 2009 Academy Award® nominations and on over 50 top 10 lists, Doubt brings to blistering life a battle royale between old guard and free thinker, played out in a crucible of sexual politics and religious piety. Its razor-sharp, whip-smart story and top-notch cast will have viewers buzzing long after the credits roll. Academy Award winner John Patrick Shanley (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Moonstruck, 1987) was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for a script based on his Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play.

Two-time Oscar® winner Meryl Streep (Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Kramer vs. Kramer, 1979; Best Actress in a Leading Role, Sophie’s Choice, 1982), Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Capote, 2005), Amy Adams (Junebug) and Viola Davis (Nights in Rodanthe) deliver fierce, unflinching performances in a story defined by the quest for truth, the forces of change and the devastating consequences of blind justice in an age defined by moral conviction.

Doubt’s subtle balance of humor, drama, intrigue and world-class performances drew unparalleled praise from critics across the country. The film is “Brilliant, riveting, even thrilling,” says FoxNews.com. “Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams perform with uncommon grace. Meryl Streep is chilling, fierce and Oscar-bound,” raves Elle.

Some Thoughts on the DVD:

The new three-disc collector’s set is made for diehard fans of the film, but Brolin’s unauthorized behind-the-scenes featurette has its funny moments as Brolin and Bardem reveal the negatives of working with the Coens, in candid interviews that may or may not be put-ons. There also are Q&As with the Coens and a fascinating “making of” documentary. The third disc is a digital copy that can be downloaded to watch on the go.

Lilo & Stitch 2-disc Big Wave Edition is a nice upgrade to the original 2003 release. The additions of the audio commentary and massive documentary are more than enough to warrant a purchase. If you’ve ever been a fan of the movie this is the version to own, but with that being said the lack of a presentation is disappointing especially considering how Disney is producing out Blu-ray discs lately. Even so, this release of Lilo & Stitch is better all around and is definitely worth picking up whether you already own the original or not. Consider it very highly recommended.

The Kite Runner on Blu-ray

Synposis:
Amir is a young Afghani from a well-to-do Kabul family; his best friend Hassan is the son of a family servant. Together the two boys form a bond of friendship that breaks tragically on one fateful day, when Amir fails to save his friend from brutal neighborhood bullies. Amir and Hassan become separated, and as first the Soviets and then the Taliban seize control of Afghanistan, Amir and his father escape to the United States to pursue a new life. Years later, Amir – now an accomplished author living in San Francisco – is called back to Kabul to right the wrongs he and his father committed years ago.

A bestselling novel before being produced for film, The Kite Runner does not shy away from showing the violence, misogyny and intolerance that marks Afghani culture. But Hosseini does so with a message of redemption, humanity and brotherhood, and those themes translate well to the motion picture. Rarely can a film transport an audience to the other side of the world in a multidimensional way that contrasts the past and the future, the old world and the new and ultimately injustice with justice. But The Kite Runner succeeds on all counts. It does so with urgency and grace. Its relevance is only magnified with this DreamWorks’ Blu-ray release.

Special Features:

  1. Commentary with Marc Forster, Khaled Hosseini and David Benioff
  2. Words from The Kite Runner
  3. Images from The Kite Runner
  4. Public Service Announcement with Khaled Hosseini
  5. Theatrical Trailer
