My Fair Lady Theatre Review

My Fair Lady

The Lincoln Center Theater Production of “My Fair Lady” at Segerstrom Center for the Arts blossoms as “lovely” as the elegant flowers it pedals. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote the book and the score, adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s famous play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture “Pygmalion”.

The story follows Shereen Ahmed (“The Sound of Music; “Shrek”) as impoverished flower girl Eliza Doolittle being ridiculed by upperclassmen of higher social and economic stature.  Laird Mackintosh (“The Phantom of the Opera”; “Mary Poppins” as linguistics Professor Henry Higgins conducts a social experiment with fellow highly educated Kevin Pariseau (“Legally Blonde”; “Chicago”) as Colonel Pickering founding the project. In six months time, the two “gentlemen” shape unrefined Eliza to speak, dress, and act like a duchess to the gleeful delight of their own ego.

They gallantly flaunt their prize unbeknownst to the wealthy guests of extravagant social gatherings and to the sorrowful tune of their subject’s objectification.  While Eliza’s personal goal for a new life by improving appearance and linguistics skills, the constant belittling of her sex and upbringing displays the relentless narcissistic personality of Higgins and his less than noble charity work.  This bickering accumulates with Higgins realizing his own setbacks but never admitting them.  Story ends from here. As a young patron unfamiliar and holding no nostalgia for the class act of “My Fair Lady”, the story’s unsatisfying conclusion left me baffled. I later learned apparently I am not the only one with this passionate sentiment.

My Fair Lady

The supporting cast bring parallels and further context to the lives surrounding that of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins. Adam Grupper (“Wicked”; “The Addams Family”) as Alfred P. Doolittle plays Eliza’s father with class parameters and values not so different from that of Higgins despite appearances. Leslie Alexander (“Mamma Mia!”; “The Boy From Oz”) as Mrs. Higgins takes on a nurturing role as a spiritual moral compass.  Sam Simahk (“The King and I”; “Sweeney Todd”) as Freddy Eynsford-Hill is presented as a handsome suitor who shares an unrelenting admiration for Eliza in comparison to Higgins’ misogynistic behavior.

Despite the musical’s longevity and recognition in the theater community, I surprised myself disliking the story’s ending to a point where I find the entirety of the production almost irredeemable if it were not for the professional quality of the show’s exemplary performers, eye-popping set design, and commentary on class distinctions. The character of Higgins is not that of a charismatic jerk but more of a snotty prick you want to punch in the face… played brilliantly by Laird Mackintosh.  Shereen Ahmed carries a range of accents and character changes that is perfectly balanced.

My Fair Lady

You’ll want to root for Shereen Ahmed and boot Laird Mackintosh, respectfully. The vibrant and diverse cast handles the complexity of the characters and story with meticulous ease. The next time I view “My Fair Lady”, will have less focus on whatever connection there is between Eliza and Higgins as that relationship fell apart on me. Perhaps part of the underlying message sees classes and titles are not always as they claim and will continue the stakes with no end in sight.  “My Fair Lady” is a blooming high-caliber revival sure to water the dry ears of a musical audience.

My Fair Lady is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts until January 23, 2022.

My Fair Lady Update

We regret to report that the January 14, 2022 7:30 PM, January 15, 2022 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM and the January 16 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM performances of My Fair Lady are postponed due to positive COVID cases within the company. We apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience this scheduling change has caused ticket holders. Please hold onto your tickets while we work to reschedule the performance.

“The Santa Clause” Series Coming Soon to Disney+

The Santa Clause

Disney Legend Tim Allen will executive-produce “The Santa Clause” (working title), a Disney+ Original limited series in which he reprises the beloved role of Scott Calvin from Walt Disney Pictures’ blockbuster franchise.

Production is set to begin in Los Angeles in March. Award-winning Jack Burditt (“30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” “Frasier,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) is the executive producer and showrunner and Kevin Hench (“Last Man Standing”), Richard Baker and Rick Messina will also serve as executive producers.

The Disney Branded Television series is a production of 20th Television.

Allen won a People’s Choice Award for his portrayal of Scott Calvin, Santa Claus’s proxy, complete with expanding waistline, rosy cheeks and snow-white whiskers in the 1994 film “The Santa Clause.”. He went on to play the role in two sequels, both hugely popular movies, 2002’s “The Santa Clause 2” and 2006’s “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.”

In the Disney+ series, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.  With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.

Allen, whose popularity skyrocketed as the star of the top-rated ABC series “Home Improvement,” earned numerous awards for his role of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, including a Golden Globe in 1994 and The People’s Choice Award for eight consecutive years from 1992-1999. Allen also starred for nine seasons on the hit series “Last Man Standing.”

In 1995, the multi-talented actor lent his voice to Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s first computer animated film, “Toy Story.”  He reprised the iconic role as the arrogant yet lovable space action figure in two sequels, 1999’s “Toy Story 2” and 2010’s “Toy Story 3.” He also appeared as the character in a number of “Toy Story” short films including “Hawaiian Vacation,” “Small Fry” and “Partysaurus Rex.”

He reunited with the creative team from “The Santa Clause” to make Disney’s “Jungle 2 Jungle,” and also starred in the feature remake of a Disney classic,” The Shaggy Dog,” in 2006.

Allen also lent his own voice as narrator to the 2012 Disneynature documentary, “Chimpanzee” and co-starred in the 2007 Touchstone comedy “Wild Hogs” along with the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest.”

In 1994, Disney’s Hyperion Publishing released his debut book, Don’t Stand Too Close to a Naked Man. It topped the New York Times Bestsellers list and led to a second book, also published by Hyperion, I’m Not Really Here.

Marvel Studios “Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness” Trailer Debut

Doctor Strange

As seen in the end credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel Studios has officially debuted the teaser trailer and poster for the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — a thrilling ride through the Multiverse with Doctor Strange, his trusted friend and Sorcerer Supreme Wong and Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives only in theaters on May 6, 2022!

In the teaser, Doctor Strange doesn’t heed Wong’s warning, “Don’t cast that spell. It’s too dangerous.” Strange realizes they “tampered with the stability of spacetime.” Mordo’s voice threatens, “Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished,” as Strange steps out into what appears to be the Mirror Dimension.

Strange pleads, “But I never meant for any of this happen,” as viewers see glimpses of an abandoned Sanctum Sanctorum, mayhem in the streets, Christine Palmer’s wedding to someone other than Strange, Wanda Maximoff’s glowing hands, and a battered Wong.

Doctor Strange

Strange visits Wanda at her new home in a remote area. Wanda declares, “I made mistakes and people were hurt,” not realizing Strange is not there to discuss the events in Westview, as seen in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision. He needs her help regarding the Multiverse.

Doctor Strange

Mordo reminds Strange, “The greatest threat to our universe is you,” just as Strange comes face to face, well, with his face, who smugly states, “Things just got out of hand.”

Review: All That Glitters: The Crown Jewels of the Walt Disney Archives

Walt Disney

Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California debuted the all-new exhibition “All That Glitters: The Crown Jewels of the Walt Disney Archives”. Visitors can get up-close and personal views of jewelry and costume accessories from the library catalog of Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Studios films. The pieces displayed are just some of many significant parts of fitting characters with their costumes and accessories to help tell the story on the big and small screen. The collections have been featured in many fan-favorites ranging from musicals, action, fantasy, supernatural, and adventure genres.

20th Century Studios is well represented in the archives with the Heart of the Ocean diamond necklace from “Titanic”, The Prince of Humbug from “The Greatest Showman”, an oversized ring intended for “Romeo + Juliet”, cross necklace from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, Voltron necklace and ring pop from “Deadpool”, ring from “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”, and Jamie Lee Curtis’ heart necklace from “True Lies”.

Walt Disney Studios has brought epic journeys to life with the frozen and majestic crowns from the “The Chronicles of Narnia” series, cursed Aztec gold coin necklace, Tia Dalma’s crab necklace, and Captain Jack Sparrow’s rings from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, Queen Narissa’s crown from “Enchanted”, Santa’s magic wristwatch from “The Santa Clause” series, Chewbacca’s Medal of Yavin and Rose Tico’s moon necklace from “Star Wars”, and costumes, crowns, medals, and paintings from “The Princess Diaries” series.

The Disney company has also translated animated features into live-action spectacles with the witch’s crown and matchmaker dress from “Mulan”, Danny DeVito’s moon-faced pocket watch from “Dumbo”, Cogsworth’s pocket watch from “Beauty and the Beast”, charms and pendant for Cruella de Vil from “101 Dalmatians” and “Cruella”, rings and crown for the Queen of Hearts from “Alice in Wonderland”, glass slipper from “Cinderella”, and Genie’s costume and the magic lamp from “Aladdin”.

Obscure and lesser-known Disney productions get their recognition including the two-way radio wristwatch and Breathless Mahoney’s earrings from “Dick Tracy”, Marvin Acme’s cufflinks from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, Tik Tok’s badge from “Return to Oz”, King Brian’s crown from “Darby O’Gill and the Little People”, Amulet of Time from “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, and the sporks crown from “The Muppets Most Wanted”.

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a plethora of treasures from popular titles like the golden horns from “Loki”, Scarlett Witch’s rings from “WandaVision”, necklace from “Black Panther”, the Eye of Agamotto from Dr. Strange, jade necklace from “Shang-Chi”, and the ten rings worn by the Mandarin in “Iron Man 3”.

Bowers Museum has succeeded once again to bring another sparkling exhibition from the Walt Disney Archives. We hope this partnership lasts dazzles for years to come. The exhibition is respectfully housed in an Orange County museum not too from the Disneyland Resort. So the local area should be quite accessible to not only die-hard Disney fanatics but also admirers of cinema and fashion.

A small selection of shirts, sweaters, and bags are available in the Gallery Store to commemorate your visit to the exhibition at the Bowers Museum. “All That Glitters: The Crown Jewels of the Walt Disney Archives” is curated by the Walt Disney Archives in conjunction with the Bowers Museum. Now open until June 19, 2022.

CHOC Launches 2021 “Deck the Halls” Campaign

Choc

CHOC (Children’s Health of Orange County) wants to make sure hospitalized patients and their families don’t miss out on the magic of the season. CHOC has launched “Deck the Halls,” a unique event created to address some of the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Choc

Disneyland Resort, CHOC’s longest-tenured and largest corporate donor, has magically transformed the entrance and main lobby of CHOC’s Orange hospital into a wonderland of holiday delights and good cheer for the month of December.

Choc

Choc

With the support of valued corporate partners such as Hyundai, Chick-fil-A, Credit Union for Kids, Tustin Toyota, Hill Brothers Chemical Company, and Law Offices of Samer Habbas & Associates, holiday tote bags will be distributed to patients throughout December.

A virtual celebration will be broadcast from CHOC’s in-house Seacrest Studios on December 10, 2021 — bringing activities like Disney holiday cupcake decorating, storytime with Santa Claus, gingerbread house building and more, directly to patients who aren’t able to leave their rooms.

Choc

Due to safety measures set in place by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, CHOC cannot bring certain, highly anticipated, experiences to its young patients—such as the in-hospital Minnie Walk event that brings the annual CHOC Walk, presented by Disneyland Resort, straight to hospital patients. So, the CHOC Community Engagement team conceived of a new, clever, and safe way to support CHOC’s patients and families during the holidays, and that’s when Deck the Halls event was created.

“No one should have to be in a hospital during the holidays. With a little help from our supporters, we hope to add some cheer for those in need of healing and hope,” states Zach Abrams, Assistant Vice President of Community Engagement, CHOC  Foundation. “Our ‘Deck the Halls’ campaign is also an opportunity for all of our friends and supporters to donate in a meaningful way during this season of giving and fundraising for a worthy cause here in our own community.”

How to Support Choc

COVID-19 protocols prevent the “Deck the Halls” event from being open to the public but community members can support the event, and CHOC programs throughout the year, in three ways:

  • Donate toward holiday tote bags and festivities that will help bring the “Deck the Halls” event to life. Donations will go towards items like toys, crafts, and activities for patients and families throughout the month of December.
  • Sponsor decorations to add extra merriment into the hospital halls. Underwriting opportunities include decorating each floor with different holiday themes, lighting up the CHOC “Bridge to Hope,” funding balloon garland, and more.
  • Fundraise to help CHOC create magical moments during its virtual celebration by creating a fundraising page to share on social platforms. Ardent supporters can create their own “Holiday Fundraising Team” to increase outreach and donations by getting friends and family involved.

Choc

Over its 30-year history, the popular fundraising event CHOC Walk in the Park, presented by Disneyland Resort, has raised more than $38.5 million for CHOC, Orange County’s only pediatric healthcare system. These funds support programs and services for CHOC’s greatest needs—from mental health services to child life activities and more. The “Deck the Halls” event and campaign continues the spirit of CHOC Walk in the Park by creating an unforgettable holiday event while raising vital funds for CHOC.
