Review: Back to the Future: The Musical Drives In Style

Back to the Future

“Back to the Future: The Musical” makes a heavy pit stop at Hollywood Pantages Theatre for an evening of heartfelt nostalgia, delightful laughter, and spinning tunes. An electrifying experiment in the realm of classic movies translating from the silver screen to stage in fashionable Broadway style. The curious chemistry retains the spirit of the original 1985 “Back to the Future” film that highlights and adapts core moments and story beats into propelling songs and show-stopping dance sequences. Truthful to diehard fans, introducing theater lovers to the story and characters in meaningful ways, and tying everything together with the iconic visual spectacle of 1980s era time travel possibility.

Marty McFly (Caden Brauch) is a young high school student in 1985 Hill Valley. Despite feeling like a loser with his unsuccessful band, his girlfriend, Jennifer Parker (Kiara Lee), sees the good in him. Encouraging to keep playing and show off his talent. Marty meets up with Doc Brown (Don Stephenson) in the middle of the night to help with a science experiment with a time-traveling machine.

Back to the Future

Doc gets into imminent danger and Marty speeds off to help his friend and accidentally travels back in time to the year 1955. More trouble brews as he unknowingly prevented his father, George McFly (Burke Swanson), from meeting his mother, Lorraine Baines (Zan Berube), thus endangering his own existence. As Marty tries to prevent this catastrophe from staying permanent, he has to face the school bully, Biff Tannen (Ethan Rogers).

Alan Silverstri’s iconic score highlights all the heart-pounding moments just like in the movie.  The main theme makes the DeLorean come alive along with the visual and audio components to make the audience believe the time traveling vehicle truly appear and disappear on stage before the audience’s eyes. The careening speed scenes turns and curves in angles that make you want to swerve your body with the action on stage.

Music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard take the story beats of the original 1985 film and uses them to anchor propelling moments to keep the story, conflicts, and characters moving forward. Every number has a place in the show and does not waste any time. “Cake”is a delightful satire on 1950s future living during Marty’s first walk thru Courthouse Square in 1955. Celebrated fan favorite Goldie Wilson (Cartreze Tucker) is a reflection of someone determined to turn their future around giving his “Gotta Start Somewhere” a rousing boost in morale.

Back to the Future

Given the movie’s long-lasting existence, the relationship between Marty and Doc has been in the eye of pop culture in many other mediums and no stranger to parody and satire. One of which, the animated television show “Rick and Morty” may have influenced and played up the role of Doc as more over the top to the movie counterpart. In particular with his fourth wall breaking musical numbers in “It Works”, “Future Boy”, and “21st Century”. This balances out with undoubtedly the musical’s signature anthem in the spiritual “For the Dreamers”.

The show still gives the audience what they want with memorable songs from the movie with “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”, “Johnny B. Goode”, Marty’s band playing “The Power of Love”, and “Back in Time” to conclude the show on a rapturous high note.

Bits of dialogue were small but solid inside jokes to the success of the original movie. Nods to influences that make the franchise a standout icon. Calling out the name of the name of the original car designer was a noteworthy touch. New and old fans will take joy in the sights and sounds of this worthy stage adaptation of the beloved film.

“Back to the Future: The Musical” delivers what the audience could ever need from a nostalgic classic with a musical twist. You couldn’t ask for anything more. The show takes its premise with fun, sometimes over the top, not too serious, and leaves with a kind message. The adaptation from screen to stage by original writer Bob Gale must have been a thrilling opportunity to go back and make sensible adjustments to elements to condense and expand. In particular, for years, Bob Gale has said if he knew this movie franchise would take off the way it dod, he would not have placed Jennifer in the DeLorean with Marty and Doc at the end of the first movie.

Back to the Future

Well, he got just that with this version. In fact, he along with other members of the other cast and crew of the original film were in attendance at the opening night premiere at Hollywood Pantages Theatre. Director Robert Zemeckis, composer Alan Silvestri, Claudia Wells, Lea Thompson, producer Frank Marshall, cinematographer Dean Cundey, and many more. An emotional reunion for new and old fans to see all the people who have professionally contributed to the legacy of “Back to the Future”.

Set your clocks and don’t be late for “Back to the Future: The Musical” playing at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre from November 5 to December 1, 2024. For more information including ticket sales, visit https://www.broadwayinhollywood.com/

The production will return to Southern California at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa from December 26, 2024 – January 5, 2025.

Disney launches company-wide 2024 Toys for Tots Program

Disney

The Walt Disney Company announced the launch of its company-wide 2024 Disney Ultimate Toy Drive supporting the Marine Toys for Tots Program, which has helped deliver millions of toys to children in need during the holiday season. Good Morning America (GMA) reported exclusively on the new campaign, highlighting three unsung heroes at Toys for Tots: Sergeant Christos Toromanides, GypC Serna, and Staff Sergeant Xavier Montaie.

Sgt Toromanides, a local Toys for Tots Assistant Coordinator in Ohio, is a survivor of pediatric cancer who was gifted a toy from a Toys for Tots Marine during a hospital stay when he was 13 years old. Serna dedicates her time to supporting local children in need as her local chapter’s Coordinator in Texas, and is the daughter of a World War II veteran who organized toy distributions in her community throughout her childhood. SSgt. Montaie has a full-circle story, as he now leads the local Ohio Toys for Tots chapter that once supported him in his childhood. All three volunteers spend their holidays giving back to their communities by volunteering for Toys for Tots.

As part of its efforts to raise awareness among fans and consumers, Disney is offering additional support to Toys for Tots with a new Disney-produced Public Service Announcement, “Dear Santa.” The PSA features a voiceover from Gina Rodriguez (Will Trent, Not Dead Yet, and Jane the Virgin), a special appearance from a Marine, and one young girl’s journey to share the gift of happiness. It will play in rotation throughout the campaign on Disney’s television networks and streaming platforms including ABC, ABC Owned Television Stations, Disney+, Freeform, FX, Hulu, and National Geographic.

“We are proud to continue Walt’s legacy and give the gift of happiness to children and families in need this holiday season with our good friends at Toys for Tots,” said Lisa Haines, senior vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility, The Walt Disney Company. “This year’s Disney Ultimate Toy Drive promises to be one of the biggest yet as our employees, cast members, and fans across the country continue to serve our communities and bring them together with a little Disney magic.”

“Last year, Disney helped Toys for Tots achieve a record year delivering joy and the magic of the holidays to over 10 million children in need,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), president and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Sadly, the need is even greater this year.  However, with the generous support from our friends at Disney, their Ultimate Toy Drive will once again propel needed support in communities throughout the U.S. allowing Toys for Tots to fulfill the holiday dreams of our country’s economically disadvantaged children who otherwise might be forgotten.”

A Fall Escape to Catalina Island

Catalina

Catalina is not just an island paradise; it’s a very close island paradise, making it a perfect getaway for Southern California residents. In fact, at only 22 nautical miles across the sea from Long Beach, the island can be reached by boat in one hour. With this in mind, the family and I recently escaped to the island for a memorable getaway.

Our journey began in downtown Long Beach, at Catalina Express (www.catalinaexpress.com), where we boarded one of the company’s sleek, catamaran-styled vessels for a one-hour trek across the Catalina Channel.

Back to the Future
Pic 2: Cruising aboard Catalina Express is the best way to get to the island

Featuring comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, lots of big windows and a full bar and snack shop, the boat makes for a fun trip. Highlights of the crossing included incredible views of the legendary Queen Mary; the giant, white geodesic cruise ship dome (former home to the Howard Hughes “Spruce Goose”); the beautiful Long Beach cityscape and a few playful dolphins following the boat.

For our crossing we upgraded our seats to the Commodore Lounge, where passengers enjoy priority boarding and check-in privileges, roomier and more intimate seating areas, and a complimentary beverage and snack.

When we reached the island, the captain anchored in the harbor at Avalon. Here we were greeted by schools of bright orange Garibaldi – the California state fish, along with a bustling little town, full of colorful boats and yachts, boutique hotels and shops, and scores of vacationers.

We then walked a few minutes to the Avalon Hotel www.theavalonhotel.com, where we would spend the next three days and two nights.

Back to the Future
The Avalon Hotel offers boutique luxury with incredible views

Located on a hill, overlooking the ocean, The Avalon Hotel offers 15 luxurious, boutique rooms, all uniquely configured with an assortment of balconies offering sweeping views of town and the harbor. All rooms include comfortable beds, premium linens, flat-screen TVs, a desk, microwave, refrigerator, and private bathrooms. Select rooms include a wet bar and an option of a Murphy bed.

We stayed in Room 101 and the first thing we saw when opening the door was a gorgeous view of Avalon Harbor coming from a large window. The scene was so beautiful and colorful that it looked fake. But it was as real as the rest of this charming hotel.

Back to the Future
Avalon Hotel rooms also offer spectacular views

Our room also came with a huge, open balcony, with comfortable chairs and still more impressive views. Other highlights included a Murphy bed, handmade natural soaps, fully lined bathrobes for guests to use, and a stately bathroom with tub and shower.

Our room was next to the lobby and the lush, peaceful courtyard. Adorned with plants and trees, a trickling fountain, and a koi fish pond, the courtyard is where complimentary breakfast is held each morning.

Once acquainted with the hotel, we walked a couple minutes for a delicious lunch at Bluewater Avalon (https://www.bluewatergrill.com/location/catalina-island/). Located on big wooden piers, overlooking the water, the restaurant boasts a tantalizing menu, specializing in fresh seafood and tender meats.

Back to the Future

Our lunch began with fresh baked bread and a tasty jumbo shrimp cocktail appetizer. I then enjoyed a delicious bowl of cioppino, with clams, shrimp, calamari, local fish and vegetables in a rich tomato broth. Next we shared a plate of light and crispy fish and chips, while the kids had chicken tenders and a hamburger.

Back to the Future

The fresh cioppino and fish and chips are worth a return visit

After lunch we walked next door to tiny Avalon Beach, where we played in the water and made sand castles, and watched people swim back and forth to their boats that are anchored in the harbor about 50 yards offshore. We then headed back to the Avalon Hotel and relaxed on the rooftop deck, admiring expansive views of the beach, hillside homes and iconic Catalina Casino.

Back to the Future
Tiny Avalon beach is perfect for kids and families

Probably the most famous structure on the island, the round-shaped Catalina Casino was built in 1929 as one of the first theater’s in the world to be designed specifically for the new “talkie” movies. The casino was also a popular spot during the Big Band era, when each week hundreds of people would sail to the island to see big bands with the likes of Benny Goodman, Gene Autry and other greats play on one of the biggest wooden dance floors the world had yet seen.

The next morning we enjoyed a healthy and hearty complimentary breakfast in the serene courtyard at the Avalon Hotel. The breakfast included hard boiled eggs, toast and muffins, cereals, coffee and juices.

After breakfast we walked to Catalina Golf Cart Rentals (www.catalinaislandgolfcart.com) for an unforgettable, 90-minute golf cart ride around the island.

Beginning across from the beach, our journey took us up a steep hill, where we encountered spectacular views of the ocean and coastline. We then winded through the island’s beautiful, rugged interior, passing hidden homes and numerous tiny vans and cars. Because the island is so small, golf carts and tiny, imported cars are what locals use for transportation.

Back to the Future
Renting a golf cart is a great way to see the island

At one point in our adventure we came to the base of a hill, where a group of deer walked up to our cart to share our sunflower seeds. If you wanna see the island, a golf cart is one of the best and most fun ways to do it.

After touring in the golf cart, we experienced lunch at Lobster Trap (www.catalinalobstertrap.com). The restaurant is owned by commercial fisherman Caleb Lins, who searches the fertile waters off Channel in his 40-foot boat, looking for the freshest local fish and California spiny lobster.

Our lunch began with fresh Hawaiian poke, with tuna sashimi on a bed of salad. Next we shared a creamy bowl of clam chowder with lots of tasty clams and potatoes. We then sampled fish and chips and a delicious lobster sandwich, while the kids had a burger and chicken tenders.

After lunch we grabbed ice cream at Lloyd’s of Avalon, a Catalina tradition for more than 80 years that is famous for its saltwater taffy and one-time patron, Marilyn Monroe, who used to live on the island. We then spent the afternoon relaxing on the beach.

For dinner, we got sandwich stuff at the local market and enjoyed a lovely dinner on our balcony at the Avalon Hotel. As the sun went down, we watched boats bob in the harbor and waves crash on the shore.

Review: ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ is a Fun Musical Not To Be Missed

Kimberly Akimbo

If you’ve never heard of Kimberly Akimbo, its understandable. While on Broadway, Akimbo was playing against big hitters like Hamilton, Six, Wicked, and Book of Mormon. Yet from the tiny Booth Theatre on 45th Street, this show won hearts, as well as the Tony for Best Musical in 2023. If you are wondering about it, I encourage you to buy a ticket to see it while its at the Pantages in Hollywood, California.

I happen to be a big fan of this show, electing to see it in New York, having no idea what to expect. With the story revolving around a 16-year-old girl with a terminal disease that causes her body to age faster than normal, I was nervous that the optimistically colorful poster with a rainbow on it would be misleading…thankfully I was wrong. Kimberly Akimbo is the feel-good musical you need in your life, but its not without a little darkness.

Back to the Future

Kimberly Levaco and her family moved from Lodi to Bergen County in New Jersey in 1999 to escape her maternal aunt and some mysteriously complicated family drama. Kimberly is almost 16 years old, and is trying to navigate a new school, new friends, and boys… though the one caveat is that she looks to be almost 70 years old. While you follow Kimberly in her school adventures, her family past comes back to haunt her.

Her relationship with her parents strains as she grows closer to the end of the average life expectancy of someone with her condition and also, her mom is pregnant. Kimberly’s aunt is a hilariously unfazed criminal who is on the run, and still finds them in Bergen County. Kimberly and her friends need money fast, and Aunt Debra has just the solution…involving a chemical solution.

The show opens in an ice-skating rink with the song “Skater Planet” which is a traditional musical theater number that introduces Kimberly and her eventual friends. Seth, an awkward brainiac who works at the rink, as well as Delia, Martin, Teresa, and Aaron, who are all in a show choir and in an unrequited love square.

Back to the Future

This song is delightful and catchy with amazing harmonies and continues to be a theme throughout the show. Carolee Carmello (Kimberly) was an obvious initial standout, from her initial performance in “Skater Planet” to the more emotional moments in “Make a Wish” and “Before I Go”. My absolute favorites though, were Miguel Gil (Seth), and Emily Koch (Debra), Miguel Gil understudied for Seth on Broadway, and his performance was on par with that of Justin Cooley from the original Broadway Cast.

He expertly made his character awkward and endearing with a great vocal performance, especially in “Good Kid.” Emily Koch is so funny and has phenomenal pitch. While the character could have allowed for some grittier vocal performance, her somewhat softer take allowed for each hilarious word to be heard in the audience. Her voice is amazing, and she did a fantastic job with the physical gags as well.

“Better” was laugh-out-loud funny, between Koch’s performance and the unexpected backing from the show choir. Jim Hogan (Buddy) was also a Broadway understudy, and he was amazing as being Kimberly’s slightly lovable, but mostly hateable alcoholic father. From his comedic timing and vocal performance in “Happy for Her” to his heartfelt performance in “Before I Go”, he was memorable.

Back to the Future

The sets were simple, rotating between Skater Planet, their high school, and Kimberly’s home. Sets were simple, and many of them were taken on and off stage by the performers between scenes. Lighting was simple, yet effective, with a video screen backdrop helping fill in the setting. Notable things about this show is that it features “snow,” and real “ice” skating, utilizing a liquid glycerin technology.

Kimberly Akimbo reminds us to enjoy the time we have while we have it, and to try and have a positive outlook when things get difficult. In a time where there is social media pressure and higher than ever anxiety about the world, its good to pause and enjoy a moment in the time before cell phones and be reminded to “grab life by the balls” and not wait around for your moment to do it.

Kimberly Akimbo has made its Los Angeles premiere at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for a limited three-week engagement, from October 15 – November 3, 2024. The production will return to Southern California at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa from January 21 – February 2, 2025.
Tickets are now available for purchase in Los Angeles at www.BroadwayInHollywood.com or www.Ticketmaster.com. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre box office. For current box office operating hours, please visit the official website.
