LEGOLAND California Resort Celebrates 20th Birthday

Legoland is an entire theme park dedicated to LEGOS and the kids that love them (photo by Greg Aragon)

I never met a kid who didn’t love Legos. The toys are simple, durable and inspire creativity and imagination. So when LEGOLAND California opened in 1999 as an entire theme park dedicated to the little, plastic building blocks it was big news. And now today, as it celebrates its 20th birthday, the destination is more popular than ever and still welcoming families and exciting new attractions.

My family and I recently visited LEGOLAND to check out the new DUPLO Playtown area, the Sea Life Aquarium and a bunch of other cool rides and attractions. We also wanted to experience the park’s mystical Castle Hotel.

Out getaway began when we checked into a wizard’s themed room. The hotel, which opened in 2018, features 250 LEGO Castle themed rooms with your choice of Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess, or Magic Wizard.

The entire hotel is decorated just like a medieval castle and offers many surprises for kids. There are talking portraits and musical seats located throughout, the lobby has a giant “Lego pond,” and there is a new themed restaurant called Dragon’s Den Restaurant & Bar, where the hotel serves free breakfast for registered guests each morning.

All rooms come with a separate kids’ area with bunk beds and LEGO building tables, a treasure chest, and a scavenger hunt. They also boast a big TV, comfortable bed, coffee maker, refrigerator, free WiFi, and a large bathroom with shower and tub. Just outside the hotel is an Entertainment Courtyard with play zones for kids of all ages, and a pool area.

But the hotel’s best feature is its location next to LEGOLAND’s main entrance. This was a great feature, as we were able to have breakfast and then stroll into the park within five minutes.

Once in the park, we were transported into a magical world of Legos. With more than 60 rides, shows and attractions celebrating the iconic toys, the park is an interactive, hands-on experience for families with children 2 – 12. The Resort is also home to SEA LIFE Aquarium and the world’s first LEGOLAND Water Park.

LEGOLAND offers lots of rides and attractions for kids and their families (photo by Greg Aragon)

Our first adventure at the park was NINJAG The Ride, where guests encounter 3D imagery, high-tech sensors as they use hand movements in a striking motion to master their skills before battling a villain called The Great Devourer. We began the ride by climbing in a 4-person car and putting on 3-D glasses. The lap bar senses hand movements, so kids can hurl fireballs, lightning, shockwaves and ice to help fight a host of menacing enemies on a 30-ft screen.

From here we entered MINILAND USA, where roughly 32.5 million Lego bricks have been turned into incredible mini-recreations of some of America’s most beloved locations. Highlights include the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the capital building in Washington D.C., Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Grand Central Station in New York, the Las Vegas strip, and Griffith Park in Southern California.

MINILAND also now includes a Star Wars section, featuring a floating Death Star and seven different LEGO Star War scenes, made of more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks, featuring one scene from each of the movies.

Another fun attraction is Coastersaurus, a roller coaster that takes guests through a prehistoric jungle of LEGO brick dinosaurs. Riders circle around a 1,100-pound Brachiosaurus and whiz by a ten-foot-tall Parasaurolophus scavenging for food.

The park’s newest adventure is DUPLO Playtown, a colorful new LEGO town geared towards children five and under. The area features more than ten whimsical playhouses with hands-on activities, slides and interactive elements that encourage kids to use their imagination and creativity while playing. Children can explore a barn, fire station, grocery store, hospital and maze complete with an interactive scarecrow.

One of the most colorful new attractions is the SEA LIFE aquarium, a multi-level aquarium with over 350 different species and more than 6,000 real creatures swimming around in 16 different interactive zones. There are jellyfish, octopi, seahorses, sharks, rays, a hands-on touching pool, and lots more. SEA LIFE Aquarium admission is an extra $25 with a LEGOLAND ticket.

With summer around the corner, the LEGOLAND Water Park ($30. with a LEGOLAND ticket) is now open, with a myriad of thrilling waters rides and slides, rafts, pools, a lagoon, and more.

LEGOLAND California is located in Carlsbad, CA. For more information and current ticket prices, visit www.LEGOLAND.com or call 760.918.LEGO.

This section is sure to be a crowd favorite, as the film is still considered to be one of Walt Disney’s greatest creations.

The dark side of Disney won’t be left out though, as the “Disney Villains” section. This section will feature the trio of wickedly stylish dresses worn by the Sanderson Sisters in the 1993 Halloween Classic, Hocus Pocus. How to Navigate Your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Reservation

The time has finally come for you to redeem your coveted Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Reservation. The anticipation and excitement have built up for over four years and with the wait finally coming to an end, you must ask yourself: How do I get the most out of my four hour window? Though one blaster size doesn’t fit all, let’s take a look at opening night at Galaxy’s Edge to discover some well worked strategies, tips, and advice that may just be worth your while and hard earned credits.

Check In and Transport to Batuu

To start off with, you’re allowed to check in up to two hours prior to your reservation window. Even if your reservation starts at rope drop, Disneyland has made it possible to enter the Magic Kingdom early to accommodate your long waited trip to Batuu. (If you haven’t had a chance to go over the reservation redemption instructions- Click Here First)

We arrived on our journey shortly after our two hour window for check in began. Walking through to Star Wars Launch Bay, there was already a fairly large crowd in line, stretching out of the building. The entire interior has been converted into a queue for reservation check in, with plenty more stragglers coming in behind. The line does move fairly fast, but just in case you are find yourself in a time crunch, it’s always better to give yourself the full two hour window before your reservation to check in. Your entire party will be checked, issued the proper bands, and then scanned again after those bands have been given.

Wristbands will be scanned after you check in to prepare you for your journey!
Wristbands will be scanned after you check in to prepare you for your journey!

For those curious about bringing a different guest than on their designated list, or trying to smuggle in a rogue traveler, not even a Jedi Mind Trick can save you. Each ID is checked and all names are reviewed alongside your valid park admission. Once you are checked in, you should be informed of your entry gate. When we asked, our entry was near Hungry Bear in Critter Country. The other two entrances were used as exit only, with security preventing any covert operations from sneaking by their shield generator. Once you know your destination, feel free to enjoy the wonders of Disneyland until your window arrives.

We recommend spending time near your designated entry point though, as even though no official queue is allowed prior to your start time, there will be fellow Galaxy’s Edge guests that will hover nearby until they are allowed to go in. Just keep an eye out and whatever you do, be polite and respectful to your fellow travelers as well as the hard working Cast Members who are making your trip to Batuu possible!

Entering Galaxy’s Edge

You are being walked into the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost, you are lining up for your first sights and sounds of Batuu. It’s going to be a beautiful experience. However, make a game plan of what you want to do as you enter. If you are part of a larger party size, make sure you know where you want to end up, as the crowd may separate you upon entry. In addition, make friends with your fellow guests. We all have the same goal, and the bigger the event, the better it is to have a few allies that will have your back in a time of need. Our reservation was for two, and though we had a strategy, talking to other fans in line gave us the opportunity to hear insider tips from other guests that completed their reservation. Here are a few examples:

1. Savi’s Workshop provides a return time ticket when you arrive to prepare for your lightsaber experience. If you want to make to make the most of your time, run over to grab your return ticket and plan your other adventures around that time frame rather than waiting in line for your time to start.

2. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run may have a shorter wait time towards the second half of your reservation. There is also a single rider line if you don’t mind splitting up.

3. Droid Depot has a special Galaxy’s Edge inspired Disney Gift Card that can be purchased and reloaded for use throughout the resort. If you plan on purchasing any larger items, purchase the gift card first, since it requires a $100 minimum. Then use the gift card credit towards your expenses. This way you get an amazing souvenir using money you already planned on spending, making the credit chip virtually free.

4. You can hold a place for your party in line at Oga’s Cantina. If you plan to run over there first thing, take turns going around and exploring the wonders of Batuu. This will allow for plenty of sightseeing while not losing your spot in a possibly longer line.

The excitement builds as we all wait. Make sure to keep an eye out in your designated entry point. Don't get stuck in the back!

The Muppets

In every big event situation, making friends always yields positive results. Don’t be shy, as it may come in handy and save you some valuable time used for more fun in Batuu!

Enjoying Oga’s Cantina

This is by far one of the most exciting things about Galaxy’s Edge and one that is one of the most challenging to complete. If you are able to snag a place in the cantina, please know the venue is built to the scale of an actual cantina and has very limited seating and overall capacity. If you find a spot, keep it, and make sure if you get up to explore, that someone is able to cover your spot. This is definitely important for those standing at the bar. Once you move, someone will be there to take your place, so get comfy and settle in.

One of the most popular spots in Black Spire Outpost!

Also, there is a lot of movement once inside, so make your presence known to your bartenders. They are running around fast enough to challenge the Falcon in the Kessel Run, so if you need something, make sure to flag them down before they get swept up in another drink order. The same goes for coasters. If you want one, best to ask for a spare when you place your order. This will make sure you are able to smuggle one home without the risk of moisture.

DJ R-3X is keeping that intergalactic funk going all night long!

Lastly, you are limited to 45 minutes in the bar, so order your drinks with enough time to enjoy them without having to chug them down. You may only get one shot at this kid, you better make it count. We also recommend test driving their version of Blue Milk. The Blue Bantha is a smooth, non frozen version of the same drink and also comes with a delicious cookie topper. This is perfect for those who want a more traditional drink experience, as both the Blue and Green Milk varieties are a frozen blend drink.

The Secrets of Savi’s Workshop

Who doesn’t want their own custom lightsaber? For Savi’s, that dream has finally become a reality, as you are whisked away by The Gatherers to a top secret workshop to make all your Jedi (Or Sith if that’s your thing) dreams come true! This experience will have a huge demand, so please follow our tip from above, as it will save you a lot of time and effort.

Once there, two people are allowed in per builder, so if you plan on documenting your experience, make sure you have a companion there to take photos, video, or help you with your social media. This will also be a great opportunity for those to spectate and be part of the experience without having to drop $200 on their own saber. Once your color tag is called, as everyone will receive a separate color coded voucher, you can load up in the waiting area around the workshop.

Build your own saber and fulfill your destiny!
Build your own saber and fulfill your destiny!

If you have to use a refresher, now would be the time to do it, since the experience as a whole takes around 20 minutes and you will not get the chance to pause for a quick restroom break. Fortunately, the refresh station is just around the corner, so this should make it that much more convenient for anyone needing to catch a quick moment.

Once the experience begins, make sure to take close note at what’s around you as well. There are some beautiful nods and easter eggs, including a Night Sisters zombie reference from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Soak in the surroundings and enjoy every colorful piece of scenery you come across.

Merchandise and Food Stops

For our first visit, this was a challenge, since you have to pick and choose where you can go and explore. If you want to taste and buy as many cool things as possible, it may work in your favor to divide and conquer. For example, if you are waiting for one of the other experiences, have one of your friends run to the Milk Stand and grab you a Blue/Green Milk. Multitasking is your greatest defense in your four hour window. The same goes for the exclusive Coke Bottles. Try to use your time waiting in line to run off for quick food recon, giving you less time waiting in separate lines.

Fortunately, a lot of the dining options have mobile ordering, so your Disneyland App can also save the day. Make sure to check the times available and punch it to the nearest food. Though, when it comes to merch, watch the lines wisely, as each location will have different register setups. Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, for example, will have two registers.

The legacy sabers of Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities
The legacy sabers of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities

One is designated for the legacy saber area of the shop, while another kiosk with two registers is setup towards the back of the store. If you aren’t buying a saber, you may want to avoid that line, as it ran a little slow in our experience due to everyone wanting to hold and inspect the sabers up close. Though each reservation time may vary in line length, high demand items like the sabers will create a longer line. Keep an eye on the clock, and don’t lag around too long.

Play Disney Parks App Quick Tip

The Play Disney Parks App has a lot of amazing little features, including the ability to hack items, gather valuable intel, and immerse you in the ongoing story of Black Spire Outpost. However, this app requires a ton of battery life. Going in with a fully charged battery wasn’t enough for the time we were there, and as a result, there was less of an opportunity to use the app throughout the evening. Bring a portable charger, or purchase one at the park before you enter Galaxy’s Edge. The app is really fun, so set yourself up for success and don’t follow in our example.

A Quick Crash Course for Smuggler’s Run

This attraction is amazing, and if you weren’t already excited, just wait until you get a chance to peak through the queue. As you walk through the docking bay, you get a chance to look right out at the outer hull of the Falcon. It’s a perfect opportunity to get a unique photo and really soak in the details of the ship!

The Muppets

Once inside the waiting area, which is the holochess main room, you will get about 2-5 minutes before being whisked off to the main cockpit. Be fast, polite, and snap your photos and video. It’s such an overwhelming moment, including the interactive alarm elements. There will be a button towards the back end of the room that needs to be pressed to reset the Falcon’s controls. We didn’t get a chance to press it since another guest sprinted over to press it, but it’s a chance to play around with the ship before the adventure begins.

The Muppets

When you make it over to the ship’s iconic cockpit, make sure you swap any last minute positions in your party. Once those doors open, it’s go time. The entire attraction goes by in a flash, so make the most of your time. Though, if you end up being the pilot, make sure to communicate with your copilot. The pilot to the left handles the ship’s right/left direction while the pilot to the right handles the ship’s up/down direction. Everyone has to work together as a team, so don’t be afraid to give your crew a quick heads up on your next move. Everyone depends on the pilots to get their loot at the end of it all.

Lastly, if you want to be the one to punch it to lightspeed, make sure you are the pilot that goes to the right. It was such a fantastic moment, and one that is so worth the wait. If you have that one hardcore fan in your crew, make sure they get that opportunity. Nothing else comes close!

Final Thoughts

There’s still so much ground we haven’t a chance to cover, and to be perfectly honest, it’s because we didn’t have time to do everything. It’s a four hour window, and everyone is going to be hard pressed to make it all happen. The time flies by, and every experience racks up the time fast. We recommend picking two to three high priority items for your “Must Do” list.

Make a plan, have a backup if something doesn’t pan out, and uses your party size to your advantage. If you aren’t new to Disney Parks, you already know the struggles that come with anything new and exciting. Everyone else wants to do what you want to do. Still, there is no wrong way to do your trip to Galaxy’s Edge. What is important is making time for what you feel is worth your hard earned credits.

The advantage of reservations is that it limits the crowds, making the peak moments more reasonable. If you were lucky enough to grab one, we hope you have a fantastic experience. The time you spend on Batuu is extremely valuable, especially for your return trip once the world opens up to the general public in June. It won’t be long until you have your own dos and don’ts for the next adventure.

We are part of Disney Parks history, and nothing else comes close to the fun and excitement that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge brings. See you out there across the stars. “Til the Spire!”

The Foods of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is an experience all its own, providing a wide selection of amazing food and beverage choices that each share a distinct story. For Walt Disney Imagineering, it’s more than just food, it’s an experience for all senses that combines with the immersive elements of the rest of the land.

As a remote planet, Batuu is one of the lesser populated worlds in the Star Wars galaxy, which gives Disney a chance to provide a unique “farm to table” feel that you would see in more rural settings. Food and drink throughout the land also tie into an ancient culture, passed down from generation to generation of Batuuans. Let’s take a quick look at some of the delicious and out-of-this-world food offerings coming your way at Galaxy’s Edge!

Oga’s Cantina- As the land’s main watering hole and hot spot, guests will get the chance to share their tales from around the galaxy and be part of the cantina’s intimate and vibrant setting. Beverages will include the spicy Bloody Rancor, the foamy Fuzzy Tauntaun, and the fruity Carbon Freeze. Each drink is custom made, bringing all corners of the Galaxy directly to you in a brilliant presentation and smooth taste.

The Muppets

Ronto Roasters- Named for the large pack of animals native to the dessert world of Tatooine, Ronto Roasters is a delicious pit stop for anyone looking to refuel along their journey through Black Spire Outpost. It’s signature pod racing engine fires up the barbecue pit, turning up the heat and turning heads along the way. You will also get an opportunity to encounter the former smelter droid, 8D-J8, carefully turning the spot of meats. The stall’s signature dish, the Ronto Wrap, closely resembles Earth’s roasted pork and grilled sausage. Meanwhile, you can wet your whistle with Batuu’s gourmet twist on iced tea lemonade, the Tatooine Sunset.

The Muppets

The Milk Stand- Sure to be one of the most popular stops among your journey, this location will give you a drink four decades in the making. Here you will get the chance to try Blue and Green Milk, both providing a frozen blend of exotic tastes and sweet fruity accents. Green Milk, as seen in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, delivers more of a zing than its blue counterpart. Don’t miss your chance to give them both a try!

The Muppets

Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo- Passerby will notice Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs’ transport shuttle sitting atop Docking Bay 7. The transport acts as a mobile kitchen and restaurant, transforming the hangar into Tuggs’ Grub. Using a variety of exotic ingredients from far reaching systems, this is a perfect stop for any adventurous eaters. Try his unusual dishes like the Kaadu ribs, Fried Endorian Tip-yip, and Batuu-bon for dessert.

The Muppets

No matter where you go, there is so much to try. To help along your journey, Disney’s Mobile Food Ordering Service will be available through the Disneyland App for Ronto Roasters, Milk Stand, and Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. Menu items will be subject to availability.

KEY TERMS

Aurebesh

The written language of the Star Wars galaxy.

Blaster

The term for “gun” in the Star Wars galaxy. These weapons come in two basic forms – pistols and rifles – with a wide variety of modifications depending on use – and user.

Datapad

The Star Wars equivalent of an electronic tablet. When guests use the Play Disney Parks app** on their mobile devices while inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the app interface transforms to resemble a Datapad.

Droid

The term for a robot in the Star Wars galaxy. There are many different types, with a wide range of complexity and specialties. Some are meant to accomplish simple or mechanical tasks, some are deployed in battle, and some can converse fluently with humans.

The Force

The phrase “may the Force be with you” is peppered throughout the Star Wars saga, referring to the mystical energy field generated by all life forms. Some beings in the Star Wars galaxy dedicate their lives to it, while others don’t believe in it. The Force is not good or evil, but it can be used for either – it has a light side and a dark side. Some are able to use the Force for a kind of extrasensory perception and power, moving objects with their minds, choking people from afar and other abilities.

The First Order

Following the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” some members of the Empire escaped into the far reaches of the galaxy, eventually resurfacing as the First Order. Ruling through force and fear, they seek to overthrow the New Republic.

Hyperspace/Lightspeed

Spacecraft equipped with a hyperdrive can travel at lightspeed (faster than the speed of light) and access an alternate dimension known as “hyperspace.” This allows ships to travel hyperspace lanes and traverse great distances across the galaxy in a much shorter time than using sublight engines. The phrase “make the jump to lightspeed” is commonly used in the Star Wars galaxy when referring to accessing hyperspace. Stars stretch into lines of light when jumping to lightspeed, and hyperspace is identifiable by its mottled, pulsating waves of light.

Jedi Order

A noble group of protectors unified by their ability to tap into the power of the Force. The Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy until they were eradicated by Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine during the Galactic Civil War.

Lightsaber

The weapon of a Jedi, it can be used to cut through blast doors or enemies alike. Using the Force, a Jedi can predict and deflect incoming blaster bolts. At its heart is a kyber crystal that focuses energy into a blade; the crystal is attuned to the Force and connected to a Jedi on a deeply personal level.

New Republic

After the Rebel Alliance defeated the Empire at the Battle of Endor in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” the New Republic was formed to help govern the galaxy. Promoting peace and disarmament, the New Republic oversaw 30 years of tranquility but was divided in its response to the rise of the First Order.

Outer Rim

A remote, often lawless region of the galaxy on the edge of Wild Space, far from the more developed and populated Core Worlds.

The Resistance

A small, secretive, private military force founded by rebel hero Leia Organa to monitor the actions of the First Order. The cash-strapped movement relies on credits, ships, and equipment quietly funneled from the few New Republic senators who share her concerns.

Stormtroopers

These elite shock troops are fanatically loyal to the First Order. They wear imposing white armor, which offers a range of survival equipment and temperature controls to allow the soldiers to survive in almost any environment. They wield blaster rifles with great skill and attack in hordes to overwhelm their enemies.

THEATRE REVIEW: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Who can take a sunrise?  Sprinkle it with dew?  Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?  Unfortunately, not the stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s masterpiece “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Following in the footsteps of the common trend of reboots, rehashed plots, and twisted tales, this new musical interpretation of Willy Wonka and his amazing chocolate factory is nothing more than a dripping hot mess.

In this stage adaptation, it’s clear to see that the changes made had good intentions, but they never seem to come to any fruition, making it that much harder to justify changing things around in the first place. In this stage show, Willy Wonka disguises himself as “The Candy Man”, opening up a new shop not too far away from Charlie Bucket. Still, there were good elements worth noting, such as Charlie’s unchained imagination and passion for delectable candy. His ideas are larger than life, and it’s definitely strong motivation to seek out Wonka’s golden ticket. You actually want to see Charlie succeed, but despite all that, a lot of the character development with the entire cast feels lopsided and incomplete. From Mrs. Green to Grandpa Joe, the end result just had too many missed opportunities.

Each of the golden ticket winners are respectfully showcased, using a musical montage that establishes their personality, mannerisms, and treatment of those around them. As you’d expect, each winner falls short, though unlike the darker fates we have seen in past adaptations, this production never seemed to hint at the grisly endings that each winner finds themselves victims of.

The set designs also do not feel consistent, with two completely different shows put together through the first and second act. The first act relies on featured physical set pieces that revolve independently while the second act focuses on screen projections to make up the factory. The jolt between one medium to the other leaves the show empty, charmless, and frankly flat. The magic that comes with this story was nowhere to be found on stage. Even the Glass Elevator looks more like something found at a museum with a sign that reads “Do Not Touch Glass.”

The Muppets

The humor doesn’t make things any better for this chemical mixture, as it either goes right over your head or feels like it flashes by before you can really understand what’s going on. Despite being a musical, nothing really sticks the landing, and as a result, the production limps through with barely enough steam to make it to the final curtain.

Overall, the show is enjoyable under its own right, but could have been so much better considering the rich center of its original source material. The production is covered with flakes, sprinkled with sweet talent, and topped with swirls of agitation. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A New Musical” is nothing more than a marshmallow-filled chocolate bar that leaves you wanting more the moment you take a bite: Unfulfilling and quick to fizzle out.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Now Open!

Thank the maker! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has finally opened, bringing with it a frenzy of interstellar proportions. After being announced at the 2015 D23 Expo, fans have anxiously waited for their first glimpse of the new expansion for over four years and with this week’s epic opening dedication, it’s safe to say it’s been well worth the wait.

In just the first few days, we’ve already been receiving more images, video, and content than anyone could’ve possibly imagined. Batuu looks beautiful, filled with intricate details that would make any Star Wars aficionado swoon. Every stone, pathway, and blaster burn tells its own story.  The Millennium Falcon being the center piece of it all, towering over the masses against the iconic Star Wars landscape we have all grown to love. It all leads to the exciting new attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. SoCalThrills managed to smuggle one of its own in to get a full mission briefing, so make sure to check out this exciting data entry for yourself!

Yet, the highlight of it all came from the touching opening ceremony that featured Star Wars legends Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Billy Dee Williams, and creator, George Lucas. As seen in the video above, each of them shared a touching moment with the fans and were just as much in awe over Galaxy’s Edge as everyone else. The land is the ultimate dedication to all they’ve worked so hard to create within the Star Wars universe over the past 40 years. Of course, as Mark Hamill said himself, none of this would be possible without the fans.

Still, the saga of Batuu and Black Spire Outpost is just beginning. There are still so many surprises left to uncover and a whole galaxy of possibilities to reveal. Stay tuned, as we will be there every step of the way. Reservations will be required to visit Galaxy’s Edge from May 31st to June 23rd. After June 23rd, reservations will not be required, but the land will still be subject to capacity. You can learn all about how to redeem your reservation by clicking here.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run Complete Mission Briefing

You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. It’s outrun Imperial Cruisers, brought freedom to the galaxy, and is now waiting to board for its next great adventure. Prepare for the full mission briefing, but be forewarned, what lies ahead contains spoilers for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. If you’re ready, let’s punch it!

https://youtu.be/cgigrkyvuUA

ARRIVAL

As you enter Black Spire Outpost on the distant planet of Batuu, you turn around the corner of Oga’s Cantina, and there you get your very first glimpse of THE Millennium Falcon.  This modified YT-1300 Corellian light freighter was piloted by the daring smuggler Han Solo and his Wookie copilot Chewbacca, taken to the edge of the Battle of Endor by Lando Calrissian, and through the harrowing escape of Crait from the clutches of the First Order by Rey.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, is Disney's largest single-themed land expansion ever at 14-acres each, transporting guests to Black Spire Outpost, a village on the planet of Batuu. Guests will discover two signature attractions. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (pictured), available opening day, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, opening later this year. The moment will take you buy surprise, just like Luke Skywalker when he first stumbled upon the “piece of junk” at Docking Bay 94 in Mos Eisley. The Falcon looks absolutely breathtaking and is even more stunning than you’ve ever imagined. The details really come alive. Every inch of the ship hardened through carbon scoring, mechanical modifications, and certain parts in desperate need of repair. This ship has seen better days, but deep down, that’s what gives this ship it’s character. Though, you didn’t come all this way to just stare blankly into its hull. It’s time to take your chance and hop aboard!

QUEUE

Inside the caverns, guests ascend ramps inside the Ohnaka Transport Solutions repair shop.  It seems that space pirate, Hondo Ohnaka, has taken up residence at the docking bay to set up a new business opportunity.  His operation was so hastily pieced together, even the attraction warning signage shows signs of the previous docking bay’s occupant.  As you take a look around, you will get a chance to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings.

The garage prepares an anchored engine for Hondo’s next big smuggling mission. The engine isn’t without its flaws though, as it experiences a few hiccups. Shipping containers are also laid out on the floor, with droids being used as trash cans, old scout trooper helmets scattered as buckets.

The Muppets

It doesn’t take long to wonder what’s going to happen next. What is Hondo smuggling exactly? Still, the question fades away for a brief moment, as from upstairs you will get amazing view that looks down at the Falcon. Any die-hard fan could spend hours overlooking the stunning details of the ship.

PRE-SHOW

Guests are divided into two separate groups as they prepare for their adventure. The airlock door slides open, revealing Hondo himself at the control tower, orchestrating his smuggling operation from high above. With no hesitation, you get the chance to join his crew. In return for a big smuggling job, you may get a chance to split the profits…if Hondo doesn’t keep it all for himself. Thanks to Chewbacca, the Falcon is on loan, providing you with the perfect opportunity to take the controls.

As you prepare your crew, the video showcases the ship repositioning itself for the mission ahead. Then, you receive your assignments. The crew of six is composed of two pilots, two gunners, and two engineers.  For the most part, the brief description of each role is “pilot flies the ship”, “gunners shoot at targets”, and “engineers keep the ship in one piece”.  There’s a little more to it than those simple instructions.  You’re also told by Hondo’s crew to “push the flashing buttons when they light up”.

THE CHESS BOARD ROOM

If you’ve gotten this far and take Hondo’s offer, you are guided down a narrow hallway that leads to the ship. Guests will then be split up into teams, including any “solo” riders. From this point, you are given the essentials, which include a boarding pass, brief role descriptions, and your team color. Keep an eye out for Chewie, as he may be hard at work getting you ready for your big mission!

This is the moment many Star Wars fans may start choking up and bursting into tears.  Now, be forewarned, you may not get as much time in the chess board room as you would like.  Get ready to snap your pictures, especially while sitting at the chess holoboard itself.  The dispatch interval is quite quick.  We wouldn’t want you disappointed if you get called away too soon.

The famous main hold lounge is one of several areas guests will discover inside Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run before taking the controls in one of three unique and critical roles aboard the fastest ship in the galaxy at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. For the nerdy couples, the room does include an area with the same background where Han Solo first kisses Princesses Leia in “The Empire Strikes Back”.  You can visibly spot the “X” and “O” lighting on a wall panel (this symbolizes the love scene).  However, it’s in a corner that is used as an alternate route to the cockpit, so kindly request a quick photo so you can go about your business.

You’ll want plenty of time to inspect the smaller details and easter eggs such as animal cages for capturing Porgs.  Speaking of which, a few of them collected pieces of wiring and created nests throughout the ship. You will also catch references from both Episode IV: A New Hope as well as Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Bonus points if you can point them out!

The Muppets The Muppets

There are plenty of fun details to uncover, such as the Falcon’s alarm. Every few minutes, the lights will turn red and crew will shout out for someone to push the red button. Any guest can then approach the wall with the red blinking light and reset the ship’s system. Make sure to keep an eye out for other buttons as well, as there are plenty of subtle ways to prepare yourself once you get a chance to go to the cockpit.

At long last, Hondo’s team members call out for your group.  You are briefed one another time about your roles for your mission.  It is here where your boarding passes will be collected and you get your chance to walk up to the cockpit.

The Muppets The Muppets

Hondo will transmit your mission details, which call you back to the Falcon’s homeworld of Corellia. From there, you will be tasked with flying past a squadron of TIE fighters guarding a transport shipment of precious coaxium.

Work together as a team to find glory and create the foundations for a solid crew. Drift apart, and you may be in for more than you bargained for. Choose your roles wisely!

PILOTS

The mission requires two copilots, each controlling their respective direction (Left, Right). Each pilot will also be given control of the ship’s boosters and brakes. Just make sure to keep an eye on the control panel. Once the blinking begins, it’s time time push that button to activate a special function that will help you in your mission. The outcome also is determined on your reactions, so don’t get cocky!

The Muppets

The right pilot has a lever to control the up and down movements of the ship.  Just like with real pilots and in video games, pull down to go up and push up to go down.  The pilot also gets the coveted role of pulling a green-lit lever that will send the ship into light speed.  The ship is on a predetermined path, but the pilots still have enough control for the ship to crash into spires or fly under catwalks and cranes.

Don’t be afraid to really push the levers to the limit.  This will help get you adjusted to the sensitivity of the controls. You will also get a practice run over Batuu, so take advantage of every chance you get to hone in your skills. Just make sure to fly casual, as your gunners will need your flying skills to get their targets in range.

GUNNERS

Once you power up your controls, you are given the option of selecting automatic or manual mode for this experience. Automatic mode will set your blaster to one position, while manual allows you to control the direction of your fire. Each gunner will receive different color lasers, indicating who’s who. Whether you are a young padawan in need of a fun training session or an ace sharpshooter going for a high accuracy mark, this position will get you all fired up. Don’t get too excited though, as Hondo will charge you for every blaster shot you fire!

ENGINEERS

Whenever the ship experiences a crash or is taking on blaster fire, the cockpit reacts, creating an opportunity for the engineering crew to take action. When these impacts occur, the team will be instructed to press buttons and keep up the health of the ship. If the engineer does fail to keep up with damages, the ship may experience technical difficulties, such as jumping out of hyperspace too early.  It’s best to keep your hand in the center of your panel so that you may quickly activate emergency buttons.  Hint: You’ll most likely have to push something if the ship crashes into something.  Air also bursts on the engineer during impacts as well.  Engineers sit in the last row, they get a great advantage point of all the action from their perspective.

The Muppets

Overall, your mission gives you the chance to create a great shared experience that will produce memories that will last a lifetime. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run is designed to keep you coming back for more, with outcomes constantly in flux pending on your crew. Now it’s time to see if you have what it takes to make the likes of Han Solo and Chewbacca proud. We will see you at Black Spire Outpost!

The Magic of Disney Cast Members and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Name Tag in English and Aurebesh. Photo Courtesy of Russell Tom

All Disney Parks fans know that Cast Members are just as important to the magic and the story of the lands they inhabit and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is no exception. Though, this time, Disney is bringing the world of Star Wars to a whole new level, giving Cast Members the opportunity to create a customizable character that goes beyond anything any of us has ever seen.

The most obvious mark of this comes from the costumes, which are modular for this experience. The cast can pick from a variety of options to create the look that best fits their personality and storyline. Walt Disney Imagineering spent 3 years developing the costumes, with endless variations that include tunics, wraps, vests, and much more. Accessories are not sold short either, as various pieces of jewelry, scarves, hats, and other outerwear are considered to complete the look.

The Muppets

With the outfit comes the ability to create a unique identity. Cast Members are encouraged to develop a back story, enriching their persona and giving guests the most realistic experience during interactions. Though the guidelines may exist, Disney Cast Members now have the tools to bring their guests into a world entirely their own.

When considering other interactive features, such as the Play Disney Parks App, the effort put forward by everyone involved in bringing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to life becomes clear. This is a fully immersive experience, one that will set the tone for the future of theme park attractions not only for those who visit but those who work to keep the hyperdrive motivator running.

The Muppets

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at the Disneyland Resort on May 31st for reservations and to the general public beginning June 24th. Guests can also venture to the world of Batuu and Black Spire Outpost at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World starting August 29th.
