Theatre Review: Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire

Having a rough week? Been a minute since you’ve been to the theater? Help is on the way, dearie! Mrs. Doubtfire is now at the Pantages in Hollywood!

Based on the 1993 film, Mrs. Doubtfire is a hilarious and touching story of a father willing to do almost anything to see his children after a tumultuous divorce. Daniel Hillard is a voice actor, as well as a doting and loving father, but his priorities are not ideal in the eyes of his wife, Miranda. She files for divorce, and Daniel’s lack of job prospects and a furnished home results in the court only granting him occasional visitation with their three children: Lydia, Christopher, and Natalie.

With the help of his brother Frank and Frank’s partner Andre Mayhem, Daniel transforms himself into the nanny of Miranda’s dreams—Mrs. Doubtfire. While in character, Daniel gets closer to his family than ever before. He stumbles upon an amazing job opportunity that will give him everything he needs to obtain joint custody of his children legally, but how can he balance being both Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire?

Inside Out

The show begins with “That’s Daniel”, a fun introductory number that not only showcases the characters, but the talent of Rob McClure (Daniel Hillard) who reprising his role from the original Broadway cast. “I Want to Be There” is heartbreaking, as Daniel sings about his children. “Make Me a Woman” is hilarious, a much-appreciated juxtaposition in the story so far.

“Easy Peasy” is absolutely hilarious, almost like a fever dream, the song and dance represent the process of searching the internet for easy dinner recipes and finding videos—very relatable in the most over-the-top way. The second act is somehow even more fun and heart wrenching than the first. “The Shape of Things to Come” received roaring laughs from the audience. “Playing With Fire” and “He Lied to Me” perfectly illustrate how precariously complicated Daniel’s lies have become.

Inside Out

McClure’s performances truly make the show, as his impressions and physical comedy are solidly funny. The topical jokes and jabs felt appropriate, and not over the top, as they sometimes can in musicals. Giselle Gutierrez (Lydia Hillard) and Sam Bird (Christopher Hillard) were certainly standouts in “What the Hell”, Gutierrez is a fantastic singer, and I look forward to seeing where her career spans after this tour. “Just Pretend” was a hauntingly beautiful performance.

Inside Out

Sam Bird is a great singer, but also had amazing comedic timing, seeming to inherit a familial trait of yelling when he’s lying, his performances made me laugh out loud a few times. Aaron Kaburick (Frank Dillard) and Nik Alexander (Andre Mayhem) were a fantastic comedic duo, and Alexander’s stage presence was always a treat.

David Korins’ set design was fairly simple and traditional, using various practical interiors against painted backdrops. Between the set design and lighting, it felt almost like watching the taping of a sitcom. It was perfect for the musical and was reminiscent of the 1993 film. Korins has an exceptional track record with Broadway shows that includes Hamilton, Beetlejuice, and Dear Evan Hansen—this show is no exception to nailing the vibe with the set.

I saw the movie, as most millennials have…so I was hesitant to see this one. It’s hard to go up against such a dynamic Robin Williams performance—but I was impressed by this adaptation. Despite knowing how it ended, I still found myself with tears in my eyes for probably the last 5 minutes of the show. It’s truly a warm and fuzzy show with exceptional music.

Inside Out

If you are considering seeing Mrs. Doubtfire, do it. It was a great show and might be one of my favorite shows I’ve seen at Pantages, well…ever. It has all the most famous one-liners from the film, and McClure truly honors the character the way you hope he would.

Mrs. Doubtfire is performing now until June 30, 2024 at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

Review: Holmes & Watson Get a Clue at Laguna Playhouse

Laguna Playhouse

“Beyond elementary and extraordinary” are words that can properly surmise the brilliance and awe of Laguna Playhouse’s presentation of “Holmes & Watson”. Before the dreaded and flawed 2018 film, the similarly titled “Holmes & Watson” was a 2017 American stage production that opened in Arizona. This faithful adaptation of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective is written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by David Ellenstein.

Expectations are high given the global familiarity and popularity of a long-time favorite literary character able to transcend time, medium, and human expression delving into the lore of mystery and intellect. The hallmarks of the crime-solving detective get wrapped up in his web of intricate misdirection and red herrings. Even if the audience is not up to speed with the source material, particularly with “The Final Problem”, the 90-minute play fills in the blanks with engaging characters, witty dialogue, ominous set and lighting design, and layers and layers of intrigue.

Inside Out

With no intermission, the audience is completely immersed from beginning to end in one of the ultimate battles of wits seen on stage at Laguna Playhouse. The one thing that will never be uncovered is any hint of boredom.

Nearly three years after the final struggle between Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis Professor Moriarty, Dr. Watson (Richard Baird) is drawn to a foreboding island asylum to unravel the mystery and identity of the long-thought-dead detective. Dr. Evans (Nicolas Mongiardo-Cooper) oversees three men claiming to be the only Sherlock Holmes. Holmes #1 (Matthew Floyd Miller) stands up to initial appearances, Holmes #2 (Matt Koenig) strapped in a straightjacket at his request, and Holmes #3 (Christopher M. Williams) is deaf-mute. The asylum is overlooked by the Orderly (Mike Peebler) and Matron (Alice Sherman). Deciphering the identity of an old friend and colleague will not be an easy task for weary Dr. Watson.

The creative cast and crew of “Holmes & Watson” certainly pieced together a wondrous accomplishment respecting the source material and enticing curious minds. A mental exercise in the ever-lasting attraction to solve the case before time runs out. Jumping into the show without studying the playbill what actor is playing which character provides a more enjoyable experience.

Inside Out

The hidden details, double meanings, and stunning revelations keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. A mesmerizing waterfall effect infused within the shadowy windowsill of the deary asylum visually captures the iconic duel between good and evil in different versions of the truth. Deduction undoubtedly sees “Holmes & Watson” as one of the most memorable mysteries put on stage.

Teeming with professional talent on and off stage, this call to adventure can not go unanswered. Grab your magnifying glass and your thinking cap, “Holmes & Watson” is playing on select days now until June 16, 2024. Be warned, theatrical gunplay is used during this production. Review: Disney’s Donald Duck’s “D.I.Y. Duck” Animated Short

Donald Duck

Disney fans, brace yourselves for a hilarious and heartwarming treat as Donald Duck returns in “D.I.Y. Duck,” the new hand-drawn animated short written and directed by the incoming Disney Legend, Mark Henn. Premiering on June 9 across Disney+, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ YouTube, Disney Channel, and Freeform, this short marks Donald’s first standalone starring role since the 1961 classic, “The Litter Bug.”

In “D.I.Y. Duck,” Donald Duck embarks on a simple home repair task that quickly escalates into a series of comedic catastrophes. What starts as an attempt to replace a light bulb spirals into chaos as Donald’s temper flares and frustration mounts. His ineptitude with tools leads to one disaster after another, culminating in an explosive and laugh-out-loud finale. The short perfectly captures Donald’s iconic blend of stubborn determination and short-tempered antics, making it an instant classic.

Check out a sneak peek of the new short:

The charm of “D.I.Y. Duck” lies in its exquisite hand-drawn animation, masterfully crafted by Mark Henn. Recently retired after a stellar 43-year career at Walt Disney Animation Studios, Henn has supervised the animation of beloved characters like Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Young Simba, Mulan, and Tiana. His expertise shines through in every frame of “D.I.Y. Duck,” blending the nostalgic feel of classic Disney animation with modern techniques. The result is a visually stunning short that will captivate both new and longtime fans.

Inside Out

Mark Henn’s direction in “D.I.Y. Duck” is a fitting tribute to his illustrious career. Having previously directed the 2000 short “John Henry,” Henn brings his storytelling prowess and deep understanding of Disney’s legacy to Donald Duck’s latest adventure. This short not only showcases his remarkable talent but also cements his status as a Disney Legend, an honor he will officially receive in August at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

A standout feature of “D.I.Y. Duck” is the inclusion of dialogue by Clarence “Ducky” Nash, the original voice of Donald Duck. Using archival voice recordings, Donald’s vocal gestures and iconic wise quacks are brought to life, adding a layer of authenticity and nostalgia. Nash, who first voiced Donald in the 1934 short “The Wise Little Hen,” continued to voice the character for 50 years, making his presence in “D.I.Y. Duck” a touching homage to his legacy.

Donald Duck’s return to the spotlight, coupled with Mark Henn’s masterful direction and Clarence Nash’s iconic voice work, ensures that “D.I.Y. Duck” will be cherished by everyone for years to come.

Review Star Wars: The Acolyte Episodes 1 & 2

The Acolyte

The Acolyte series begins with an exchange of questions between a Jedi and a would-be assassin. A combative exchange, both spoken and driven by action, sets the tone for the rest of this exciting new Star Wars series. One of the first lines of dialogue in the first few minutes is a question about the antagonist’s force abilities, “who trained you?”. That question drives the mystery at the show’s center as it unfolds each episode. The Acolyte is set before any other live-action story in a faraway galaxy.

This uncharted period in galactic history, a first in television, commences with a compelling exchange between two characters, each representing a different side of the force. This marks the beginning of a fresh narrative for every character, set in a new era of stories within the vast Star Wars galaxy. The Acolyte can be best described as a murder mystery, a unique twist set against the backdrop of the Star Wars universe. The term’ space opera’ aptly captures the essence of this new chapter in the Star Wars saga.

Inside Out

This show is undoubtedly about the Jedi and what they were like before we met them in the prequel trilogy. The emotional stakes and character exploration here focus on or surround the Jedi characters and their actions. The stakes are seemingly high for this character-driven TV show while also not being able to be so easily dismissed as cheesy storytelling as previous Star Wars projects have been largely described as.

To see the Jedi Temple and the Jedi Order itself in all its glory is just one way this show draws you in from the start. In addition to featuring some of the most compelling Jedi relationship dynamics ever seen in a Star Wars story, those explored are more familiar to Star Wars fans. The relationships explored throughout are mostly between a master and an apprentice. That relationship explored is familiar to the Skywalker saga and the story of the Jedi order across Star Wars storytelling, all while still feeling fresh.

The Jedi bonds as they appear in the show appear natural and with conflict that is not acted dramatically but tactically and marked by good direction thanks largely to a great series script. For the first time, satisfyingly, there is an exploration of the human experience that comes along with being a Jedi and makes the story and its characters more accessible to its viewers, something that live-action Star Wars shows surrounding some of our classic fan-favorite characters have had a hard time executing.

New characters in the large Star Wars universe, from the Mandalorian and his adopted son, Cassian Andor, and now the cast of characters of the Acolyte, will surely resonate with old and new fans due to the performances throughout.

Inside Out

A component never fully explored in previous Star Wars projects was a focus on Jedi order at its height. The show goes much deeper and explores themes surrounding a Jedi’s commitment to the order while also other characters have elected to leave the Jedi order. The Acolyte Makes for a great Star Wars story in that it explores what George Lucas intended these stories to tell, that there is the simple choice between choosing to do the right thing or to make the good choice over the bad thing or the wrong choice.

We all have a choice to do what is keeping us on the light side or leading us to the dark side. Decisions are made that drive that most important choice in every Star Wars story: the choice of how to use the force. The force and all that it means in The Acolyte makes for some of the best Star Wars moral storytelling since the story of the Chosen One.

The groundwork is laid for the eventual fall of the Jedi in words reminiscent of hermit Luke Skywalker when he speaks of the hubris of the Jedi in a particular Star Wars film. There is an ill intended cover up attempt involved from the very first episode that is sure to become a norm for the Jedi for generations to come. That is when the Jedi order is likely to be brought into a political game, the Jedi tend to cover up their mistakes and short sightedness. A cover up is a great component of a murder mystery and adds to the one unfolding in the Acolyte.

The show’s murder mystery element is reminiscent of the storytelling from the golden age of television, where those were popular at the time. Usually said shows would center around a simple case of mistaken identity that would unfold in a series long drama to discover the truth. The Acolyte is interested in discovering that same familiar truth while keeping the viewer engaged with the finest looking Jedi order. There is even one scene which pays homage to the fugitive movie and the famous waterfall scene but instead of Tommy Lee Jones it is a Jedi master pursuing a fugitive on the run.

The world that makes up The Acolyte is familiar and is truly Star Wars but this show does not simply play it safe with familiar character design but introduces a world and range of characters reminiscent of the feeling when the phantom menace introduced us to the world’s explored throughout the prequels. The Galaxy feels as wide as the Clone Wars tv series did over the course of its seasons, and these whole new worlds keep the viewers engaged and feeling immersed into this Galaxy Far Far Away.

The Star Wars tropes of scene swipes in editing ,make for some of the best scene transitions in recent Star Wars storytelling. The familiar storytelling also supported by a return to what makes Star Wars so unique, is its aliens. A familiar Alien species appears early on in the first episodes and reminds you why you love the characters design in Star Wars.

The Acolyte is a Star Wars story that is trying to tell a whole new story in a whole new world all while feeling familiar to the Star Wars mythos. The series feels familiar to the world building any fan would know while also challenging your view of the force and just what stories can dare to be told in a Galaxy far far away.

The first two episodes of The Acolyte are now streaming on Disney+.
