SWISS Air Celebrates New Jets from Los Angeles to Zurich

I took a getaway to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) last week and boarded a brand new Swiss International (SWISS) Air Lines jet bound for Zurich, Switzerland. Once inside the beautiful Boeing 777-300er, I found a 1st class seat and leaned all the way back and dreamed of my upcoming trip to the majestic European Alpine country.

I should mention I wasn’t actually a passenger on this particular flight. I was there as a media guest to help celebrate the inaugural flight of SWISS Airline’s newest flagship jet that will offer regular flights from LAX to Switzerland.

“This is a milestone in the history of SWISS Air,” said Patrick Heymann, SWISS Senior Director for the Americas. “With the new Boeing 777-300ER, we will be setting new benchmarks in terms of our customers’ inflight comfort and overall air travel experience.”

gggg

The new Boeing 777-300er is a sweet ride to Switzerland

Airline officials say the totally-redesigned cabin interior of the new 777-300ER will offer the highest levels of comfort and aesthetics in all three seating classes. “Our First and Business Classes offer much more privacy, personal space with a modular sitting layout, and discretion. In First Class, guests can also enjoy interactive entertainment on a 32-in screen – the largest in the airline industry. All amenities, exclusive onboard meals, and services contribute to fully personalize the inflight experience,” adds Heymann.

The ceremony was held at the SWISS Air gate in LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal. Here we were greeted by a traditional Swiss Alphorn performance, a large cake and representatives from SWISS Airlines and LAX. The festivities began with a gift exchange honoring Swiss culture in which Heymann presented Los Angeles World Airports Chief Executive Officer Deborah Flint with a B777 image celebrating the First Inaugural Flight from LAX to Zurich Airport.

It was then time for me to board the aircraft to have a look around. As one of nine new Boeing 777-300ERs that SWISS Air recently acquired, this jet boasts sophisticated technology, outstanding reliability and high levels of cabin comfort, while accommodating 340 passengers. The plane offers in-flight wireless broadband, with 50MB free Internet access for First Class passengers. And with advanced General Electric GE90-115BL engines – the biggest in the civil aviation sector – the new twinjet 777-300ers will also offer better fuel consumption.

When I take my flight to Switzerland, I hope to be on one of these new planes, sitting somewhere near one of the 8 first class suites. For here, guests will find amenities such as seats that recline a full180 degrees to a length of 80 inches for sleeping; electro-mechanical window shades (servicing all three windows of the seat area at the same time); a push button divider that goes up for more privacy; a 32-inch video screen, the largest in the industry; a dining table; and a second screen with a moving map and a program selection integrated into the handset.

A little farther down the aisle is SWISS Business class, where 62 passengers can enjoy plenty of privacy and personal space. These fully reclining seats offer a table for eating or working on computer, etc; a 16-inch video screen and a second map screen and lots of stowaway room.

In the economy section there are 270 seats that offer the latest seat-cushion technology, more legroom than previous planes, 11-inch touch screens with USB and audio port, leather headrest covers, and cup and smartphone holders.

Swiss International Air Lines is Switzerland’s national air- line, serving 106 destinations in 49 countries from Zurich and  Geneva and carrying over 16 million passengers a year with its 95-aircraft fleet.

An Inside First Look at Disney's "Pete's Dragon"

A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon. “Pete’s Dragon” stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”), Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Karl Urban (“Star Trek”), Oona Laurence (“Southpaw”), Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (“Cedar Rapids”) and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”). The film, which is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”), is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a screenplay by Malcolm Marmorstein and produced by Jim Whitaker (“The Finest Hours,” “Friday Night Lights”), with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Great Gatsby”) serving as executive producer.

Check-out the fantastic New Trailer:

During an exclusive sneak peak and Q & A with Director David Lowery and Bryce Dallas Howard, we had the opportunity to see some amazing clips as well as learn about what it took to make this film.

Lowery presented four scenes and explained that the location is somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, late 70’s early 80’s and a small town. Howard who also saw the clips for the first time was very excited to see Elliot come alive and interact with the animated character. She also went on to say that it was different when she filmed Jurassic World and that a film like that was also special effects heavy.

“When the script arrived it was an immediate yes, explained Howard. It wasn’t a straight up re-make and thats what made my decision easier. I didn’t want it to be a copycat movie, she added. Also because I’m a parent and want beautiful films out there that have innocence and be timeless. The kids in the movie were also great to work with, very professional and they adapted to the film set very easily.”

“When a movie has a fantastic concept in it, then you can accept it more easily then if it had a veil of time over it. I like movies that are not dated or have a specific time attached to it. And I wanted this film not too feel contemporary, continued Lowery.”

PETE'S DRAGON

“Shooting in New Zealand had plenty of magic on hand, the weather was great, we would find these locations that were beautiful which made the movie feel more grounded. We have a giant CG Dragon, let’s make everything else real. The Dragon was also based on my cats, we made him furry and wanted to make sure that it’s a character that you really wanted to give a hug to, stated Lowery.”

Lowery commented on the music that there is one song in the movie, but no music from the original, we wanted to avoid that, it’s a great new film about Pete and Elliot.

“The cast and crew was great to work with, especially Robert Redford, he was great to work with. After his first day on set, Redford stated that he’s there to work. I was nervous at first continued Lowery.”

PETE'S DRAGON

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.

Movie Review 'Finding Dory' Bigger Story, Bigger Heart

The exceptionally endearing and adorable sea-life creatures of Pixar’s big blue world return to the silver screen in one of the most jam-packed, fast-paced, wham-bam-snappy emotionally impactful films of Pixar’s collection to date.  FINDING DORY escapes it’s prejudice by making sure the audience is aware from the get-go that this is a heartfelt journey in search for Dory’s parents and forgotten past rather than a search for Dory herself.  Instead Disney and Pixar do what Pixar’s does best and search for the deeper meaning of Dory’s character and tells a meaningful and inspiring story using every possible commonly used theme in the most positive way.  Tear-jerkers around every kelp and under every shell on top of endless laughter helps keep the audience grinning even while eyes are watering up.

Wait. It can’t be! FINDING DORY you say is that good!? YES! I am not listening to anyone else at this point.  I am not even a true FINDING NEMO fan, but I found myself embraced to every absurd circumstance the fish find themselves in.  While the first film was still filled with heart and beautiful scenery, this 13-year-later sequel offers so much more than just banking on guaranteed story structure success from before  The film benefits from a much stronger well-balanced storyline of subplots and sub-themes galore all interwoven together in a continuation story that keeps the bulk of nostalgia from the original along with an addition of a school of creative new characters.  While the first film dependent on a familiar story structure with lovable characters and a stunning waterscape, Finding Dory builds on already cherished characters and finds new lovable, strong characters that help in telling a much larger relatively complex story.

FINDING DORY

Finding Dory isn’t just a retelling of the first film with Dory instead of Nemo.  No.  While sure there is a time where Nemo and his still overprotective father Marlin must search for Dory, this story involves more around Dory’s search for her parents, old friends, and her coming of age.  Still using some of the most popular themes in the industry, the movie never ends up beating any singular thematic moral dead horse.

The story picks up just one year after the popular blue tang fish suffering from short-term memory loss, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) returned back to the Great Barrier Reef with the famous little clown fish Nemo (Hayden Rolence) and his father Marlin (Albert Brooks).  After a brief flashback to meet Dory’s parents Charlie (Eugene Levy) and Jenny (Diane Keaton), this forgetful fishy is reminded of her family during a short stint as the teachers assistant in Rays class.  This prompts pure joy for Dory with her new found memory of her family, but quickly turns into a new epic transpacific adventure search for Dory’s parents to the coast of the California at Monterey Bay Aquarium inspired Morro Bay Marine Life Institute.

Please keep your disbelief at home as I must remind you that you are watching talking fish and sea-creatures journey across the Pacific and manage to at times to pass as human babies or even drive a vehicle.  Expect the outlandishness, but also expect incredibly creative new scenarios that you couldn’t even have dreamt up.  Scenes can become ridiculous, but are done in such a way that you shouldn’t have to think twice as to how this is possible  Just keep reminding yourself these are TALKING ANIMALS!

FINDING DORY

With such highlights as the hilarious sea lions, Ty Burell as a beluga whale with biological sonar skills that blames his big forehead for the pain he has in head, to the super cute cuddling otters; the clever new cast of hilarious characters are at no shortage.  You will laugh until the credits roll… well even more after. But that’s to be expected.  In between laughs are such emotional feasts, and fears that thankfully never go too… deep.  Such ardor of expression in every face of each character really shows the masterfulness of the animators and creators at Pixar.  While the GOOD DINOSAUR never failed in this aspect, Finding Dory picks up and soars with better story, pace and attention-span.  Kids should be able to stay engrossed in the film more so than much of Disney’s more recent lineup.

While it’s a story of platonic love, acceptance, and friendship, it’s just as much the story of who Dory is inside.  The film is more beautiful than ever and contains possibly more hyperreal scenery than any other animated film.  Humans and animals still remain with slight animated flair.  There are so many comical situations Dory and company get themselves into that one point seem to never end, but it always remains quick at the point.  Finding Dory finds itself at just over 100 minutes, which is shorter than most Pixar epics, hopefully helping assist with any antsy-ness whether your kids or own legs.

FINDING DORY

The name of the film is actually more fitting than you may expect.  Finding Dory explores many more themes that we find in everyday life.  Instead of an action-packed film in search for a fish, we find ourselves finding Dory’s inner self and quite possibly a reflection of ones own self.  Well written, Andrew Statton has done it again telling a story that its setting helps tell the story, but doesn’t take it over.  There was a sense of love and pride in this sequel with a sense they really wanted to tell this story.  Finding Dory fills the deep blue world with love and hopefully will fill some of yours.

DVD Review: Sofia the First – The Secret Library

Chances are, if you have toddlers in your life, you know who Sofia the First is. In steady rotation on Disney Junior, Sofia has become a hallmark of the network. With princesses as popular as ever, this is a character every little girl loves to watch, and one who is destined for television longevity.

After becoming princess of the fictional kingdom of Enchancia, Sofia uses her title to always do the right thing. Embodying only the best values and characteristics, she is a terrific role model for children. With a magical amulet that gives her the power to speak with animals, as well as summon classic Disney princesses (synergy!), Sofia’s adventures are not only fun, but inspirational in the ways of the best children’s programming.

Newly released to DVD, The Secret Library is a collection of four episodes. Two of them are self-contained, and two connect to a new mythological thread involving, as one would guess, a secret library. The two standalone episodes are the “Princess Adventure Club,” and “The Princess Ballet.” The other two episodes are “The Secret Library,” which features Brave’s Merida, and Olaf and the Tale of Miss Nettle, featuring everyone’s favorite snowman, Olaf.

Obviously, the big draw of this set is Olaf. Sure, kids love Merida, but there’s just something special about Olaf, and any opportunity to see this beloved character (voiced again by Josh Gad) is a real treat. By introducing the concept of The Secret Library, the writers have employed a narrative device wherein Sofia becomes the “Story Keeper,” bestowing Sofia with the responsibility of ensuring stories turn out right.

In introducing this narrative arc, the writers feature an extended sequence where Sofia floats down a river that winds through scenes depicting the instantly iconic looks of classic Disney films such as Snow White, Cinderella, Princess and the Frog, Pocahontas, etc. Subtle it’s not, but this definitively reinforces the idea of the world in which this series takes place, and never lets you forget that you are watching a Disney program.

In doing this, the writers have allowed for a great deal of narrative freedom where they can incorporate pre-existing stories into Sofia’s world. They were already doing this with the aid of her amulet, but this is a new approach to keep things fresh, and I appreciate the constant evolution of the way these stories are told, even if they remain somewhat the same thematically.

SofiaSecretLibrary

Overall, these are great shows for kids.  However, these same episodes are rerun on Disney Junior constantly. That being said, it’s still nice to have access at any time, and if your child is a fan of Sofia, these episodes definitely represent what is best about the show. There are no extras, and you’re basically just buying four episodes, but they’re enjoyable, and will be a welcome addition to the library of any family with young children.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa — A Hawaiian Family Paradise with a Touch of Magic

Guests of All Ages Discover the Beauty, Stories and Fun of the Islands

KO OLINA, Hawaii – Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, combines the beauty and spirit of the Hawaiian Islands with the magic of Disney storytelling and guest service to create unforgettable family vacation experiences.

In response to enthusiastic guest feedback, the resort recently completed a major expansion of its recreation area, the enchanting Waikolohe Valley, creating a spectacular infinity pool with a realistic grotto, a new dynamic fun splash zone for smaller kids, and a new location for poolside and beachside dining.

Waikolohe Valley is Aulani’s seven-acre water play area. The overall landscape mimics the flow of a watershed as it moves from the mountain to the ocean. In keeping with the theme of the resort, Disney integrated Hawaiian culture, stories and artistry into the design of the new pool area and restaurant location.

The tropical resort serves as a gateway to the fun and enchantment of the islands, notes Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts.

“This resort is unique and exciting, and it combines the magic and storytelling of Disney with the rich culture and beautiful scenery of Hawaii, says Staggs. “It is the ultimate family paradise with a touch of Disney magic.”

Aulani

Hawaiian heritage and Disney magic
Aulani traditionally means “a messenger of a chief – one who delivers a message from a higher authority.” The name Aulani is fitting, as the resort serves as a messenger of the Hawaiian spirit, people and culture.

“The name ‘Aulani’ expresses a connection to tradition and deep storytelling – and its roots are in this land right here,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president and creative executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, who led the design of the resort.

“This resort destination reflects the vibrant culture that surrounds it. We believe in artistry, in excellence, and in the beauty of a well-done thing. Our commitment to excellence mirrors the cultural values one sees in the arts of Hawaii.”

Something for everyone
Family-friendly resort amenities include the 18,000-square-foot Laniwai, a Disney Spa, with 15 treatment rooms and a fitness center. Many spa treatments draw upon Hawaiian healing traditions.

Aulani features two signature restaurants – the full-service ‘AMA’AMA and the buffet-style Makahiki – each offering foods unique to Hawaii. At the chic, beachside ‘AMA’AMA, ocean breezes soothe the spirit as chefs use fresh local ingredients and island flavors to create distinctive dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The buffet-style Makahiki offers guests breakfast among Disney characters or, in a magical midday transformation, dinner in artful surroundings.

Young guests have their very own kids’ club, Aunty’s Beach House. Here children explore Hawaiian culture through supervised entertainment, including interactive touch tables, wildlife and nature programs, arts and crafts, movies and traditional Hawaiian games.

Guests also enjoy the Waikolohe Stream, the resort’s mysterious (yet fun) tube-floating watercourse. Here guests encounter bubbling water, a cloaking mist and several hundred feet of additional surprises.

For those who love waterslides, Tubestone Curl, the resort’s tube slide, and Volcanic Vertical, Aulani’s tunnel slide, provide thrills galore. Guests will also interact with native Hawaiian fish, including angelfish, butterfly fish and tangs, in the 3,800-square-foot Rainbow Reef snorkel lagoon, the only one of its kind on Oahu.

Looking beyond its own magical grounds, Aulani offers a menu of discovery excursions with the aid of local experts. These include exploring tropical forests, hiking local mountains, sailing aboard catamarans, surfing lessons and more. The excursions are specially designed for Aulani guests by Adventures by Disney and feature a knowledgeable, friendly Adventure Guide.

Disney-Aulani-Ka-Maka-Landing

The leeward coast of Oahu
Set along the beautiful coast of Oahu, Aulani occupies 21 acres of oceanfront property in Ko Olina, adjacent to a nine-acre, crystal-blue lagoon and white-sand beach. Ko Olina is 17 miles from Honolulu International Airport and less than an hour from Waikiki Beach.

Aulani includes 351 traditional hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent villas in two towers, each featuring rooms that offer thrilling views of the ocean, mountains and the magnificent, lush surroundings.

Adventure, conventions and weddings, too
Aulani is the ideal place for events. Groups will find flexible event space, a beautifully appointed main ballroom (which is divisible by six), four breakout rooms and generous pre-function space.

Disney Cruise Line Brings New Experiences and Enhancements to the Disney Wonder This Fall

Exciting new entertainment and experiences are in store for Disney Wonder guests after the Disney Cruise Line vessel is transformed this fall. Headlining the enhancements are imaginative spaces for children, a jazzy restaurant and an English pub.

Following are highlights of the fun for guests of all ages, debuting on the Disney Wonder this fall.

Marvel Super Hero Academy

The Marvel universe comes to life in Marvel Super Hero Academy. Here, young guests can train to develop the brave and adventurous heroes inside themselves. It’s an exciting addition to Disney’s Oceaneer Club, the engaging and interactive space just for children.

Exclusively on the Disney Wonder, Marvel Super Hero Academy will offer extraordinary adventures in which each young guest plays an integral role. With the mentorship of some of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes, young trainees will learn the value of teamwork, bravery and problem solving through hands-on play and programs.

In one mission, Spider-Man will appear in person to help children hone their spider senses by perfecting their skills of reflex, speed and sharp minds. Children will work on their web-slinging and then get to see themselves in the headlines of the Daily Bugle.

The high-tech command post is also where other Marvel Super Heroes will interact with children via a large digital display, helping them unleash their inner heroes. In one program, kids can control the movement of a character on screen to practice super skills like repulsor blasting.

Throughout the academy, displays will feature equipment that helps make Marvel Super Heroes the mightiest in the universe. Captain America’s World War II shield, Iron Man’s helmet, Spider-Man’s web shooters and Black Widow’s gauntlets will inspire young Super Hero recruits.

More Fun for Young Guests

Elsewhere in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, open to children ages three to 12 years old, kid-sized fun continues with new play spaces and more character interactions than ever before.

  • Frozen Adventures is where fun takes the form of imaginative play and hands-on activities. On the digital screen, Olaf leads summery games with a wintery twist and a sing-a-long of “In Summer.” In another festive activity, young guests prepare for a coronation and receive a truly royal and in-person visit by Anna and Elsa.
  • Club Disney Junior features favorite Disney Junior characters, storytelling and games. During one activity, Doc McStuffins pays a visit to the club to help children diagnose and treat the stuffed animals.
  • Andy’s Room is where kids feel toy-sized in the multi-level play space themed to the Disney-Pixar “Toy Story” trilogy. As a special treat, Woody appears in person to join youngsters in a hoedown and Jessie stops by to join in a scavenger hunt.

These and other spaces provide the perfect settings for children to meet their favorite characters, dance, play and just have fun with them.

A new It’s a Small World Nursery will delight the youngest cruisers with a whimsical world inspired by the style of the legendary theme park attraction.

Tiana's Place Restaurant

Live music will be performed on the main stage, with rhythmic, toe-tapping notes of jazz, swing and blues setting the tone for the French Quarter supper club atmosphere.

Chefs will cook up Tiana’s recipes, drawing inspiration from the flavors and ingredients of the Louisiana bayou. Tiana’s personal touch will be evident in the menu, the entertainment and throughout every detail in the restaurant. From Tiana’s family photos to water lily-shaped candleholders to her framed culinary awards – all will help tell the timeless tale of Tiana’s journey from waitress to frog to princess to proud restaurant owner.

English Pub

Cheers, to an English Pub

The adult district includes a brand-new pub that invites guests to take a jaunt to an authentic English tavern. Dark woods, plush leather furniture and brass accents are reminiscent of a friendly neighborhood pub. Of course, a selection of British and specialty beers create the perfect pub atmosphere, where adult guests can sip a pint or cocktail, or sample a brew made especially for the pub.

Observant guests may discover this is no ordinary pub. Subtle nods to classic Disney films set in London can be found in artwork, props and other bits ‘n bobs throughout the space. Brilliant stories of all sorts will be celebrated at the pub, whether those tales be true, tall or flat-out mad.

Enhancements from Stem to Stern

Throughout the Disney Wonder, other new and enhanced areas include:

The Disney Wonder will continue to sail from Galveston to the Bahamas and Caribbean, until the ship sails to San Juan, Puerto Rico on Jan. 20, 2017. On Jan. 26, 2017, a three-night cruise aboard the Disney Wonder takes guests from San Juan to Port Canaveral, Fla., where the ship will homeport for the spring.

Video Game Review: Odin Sphere Leifthrasir PS4

The world of Erion needs your help! Developed by the legendary Vanillaware and published by ATLUS, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, a video game version of a Wagnerian opera, follows the five characters; Gwendolyn, Cornelius, Mercedes, Oswald, and Velvet, as their stories intertwine each dealing with their own notions of royalty, duty, and love. The story masterfully unfolds as you play through the each of the characters stories in entirely before playing the next, such that a protagonist in one story could be the antagonist in another. Originally for the Playstation 2 in 2007, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir has returned in glorious HD as well as with completely redrawn graphics, upgraded combat systems, and more. Fans of the original version of the game are not left out, from the title menu there is an option to select to play in ‘classic mode’ which only has updated graphics.

For those of you that have never played Odin Sphere, it is a game mixing beautiful animations with flowing 2D fighting action. Each character carries a different play style and entirely different movesets. In doing so, it keeps the game fresh every time as it passes through different perspectives in the overall story. As each character is driven through their own storylines, they may find themselves fighting similar enemies, and even other protagonists. Since each character plays differently, one strategy won’t work while playing another. There are, however, some aspects familiar to all their campaigns, such as alchemy and the cooking system.

Highlighting some of the new features updated in Leifthrasir, the alchemy system changes add a bit more simplicity to aid in your dungeon crawls. In its simplest form, alchemy consists of combining a ‘material’ and item(s). As an improved update, alchemy can now be done with an existing potion, so no longer do you have to hunt for ‘material’, instead you can simply repurpose any unused potion to fit your needs. In addition potions can now be combined with each other and/or food to increase the potency. While on your journey you will still discover alchemy recipes, however in Leifthrasir those recipes are no longer needed as you can experiment with different combinations to discover the recipes for yourself.

Another prominent aspect of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is the cooking system. If you’ve played the original or even one of Vanillaware’s other titles, Oboro Muramasa, you’re familiar with the restaurants that exist throughout the game. With just the ring of a bell, the biggest update for the cooking mechanic resides in the rest areas. The touring Pooka Chef Maury, will appear in rest areas and is ready and willing to cook delectable meals, provided of course that you bring your own ingredients and recipes. Ingredients can be found in stores, as drops, or even grown, allowing for a diverse range of recipes. For those that do not wish to dine on location, the dedicated venues of the Pooka Kitchen and Rabbit Cafe are available to provide service in exchange for Valentinian Coins. These meals give you experience, health, and permanent increases to your HP stat. Another bonus feature with Maury is some recipes may even give bonus experience based on how scarcely you’ve eaten them, encouraging you to try all the courses they have to offer, others come with a nice carry-out portion for which you can enjoy during battle.

Overall Odin Sphere Leifthrasir offers a more streamlined experience compared to its classic counterpart. The changes to the battle system and dungeons create a flow that it easier for gamers of all types to pick up and play. Despite these changes, new enemies and bosses are added to provide a new challenge and balance the streamlined combat system that the classic version lacks. Returning players can rejoice that there is no dizzy penalty for using up the entire power gauge. This change allows for a more fast paced combat, and relief from the old ability system, as some abilities are very taxing on power. Some characters have some strengths and additional power sources as well. In the case of Mercedes her normal attacks still use power gauge as in the classic game but he extra skill is that she can pause and reload her bow, filling her power bar. Oswald can utilize a third gauge called Berserk in which he gains great mobility and can dish out huge amounts of damage for a short time.

oSL-glam_FULL

On June 7, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir will be available on Playstation 4 ($59.99), Playstation 3 ($49.99), and Playstation Vita ($39.99). For a limited time, and only at participating retailers, standard purchases of the game will also include a 64-page softcover art book. Additionally a premium version of the game the “Storybook Edition” (Limited to PS4/$79.99) will include a hardcover version of the art book, a special Potion Recipe t-shirt, a metal slipcase for the game, an art print, and premium outer packaging.

This Summer, Disney Cruise Line guests can immerse themselves in the animated hit “Frozen” with exciting experiences inspired by the film, including a spectacular deck party, storybook adventures ashore, a three-song stage show production number, character meet and greets, and more.

A Day of Frozen Fun, Including Deck Party

On select Disney Magic and Disney Wonder sailings to Europe and Alaska, Disney Cruise Line guests are transported to the land of “Frozen” when the ship is transformed into a winter wonderland and a day of frozen fun culminates with an extravagant celebration with friends from the Kingdom of Arendelle.

On one special morning, guests will awake to discover a magical freeze has overtaken the atrium lobby with sparkling icicles adorning the grand staircase, resembling the majestic mountain-top ice palace of Queen Elsa.

Icy adventures and fun for the entire family throughout the day include meet and greets and themed experiences:

  • Memorable moments with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf
  • “Anna’s Chocolate Chase” scavenger hunt for those who share Anna’s sense of adventure, with a special surprise for finishing the game
  • “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” activity where kids take on Elsa’s magical powers to make snow and ice
  • “Oaken’s Maypole Swirl and Twirl” for families to learn a traditional Scandinavian dance spinning and braiding giant ribbons
  • “Frozen” themed dining experience, including a menu inspired by traditional Nordic fare and special dishes inspired by the film

“Freezing the Night Away with Anna, Elsa and Friends” Deck Party

The evening fun kicks off with “Freezing the Night Away with Anna, Elsa and Friends,” a family-friendly interactive deck party featuring the famous royal sisters of Arendelle and their fun-loving Nordic companions. By now, the freeze has spread to the upper decks of the ship, with giant snowflakes, icicles and snow-covered rocks.

The celebration begins with a high-energy line dance, set to the movie’s ice cutting scene, featuring the arrival of Kristoff, impressively twirling his ice picks, and Princess Anna.

Anna and Kristoff’s beloved companions, Sven, the trolls and Olaf, make virtual appearances at the party. Sven engages the crowd in reindeer games like “Sven Says” and the “Troll Stroll,” and Olaf leads a sing along to his signature song, “In Summer.”

Elsa arrives with a snowy gust of wind, calling on guests to sing “Let it Go” with her as she conjures up a wintry spectacle to cool things down for Olaf. In true Disney fashion, Elsa unleashes her magic, sending a chill through everyone as the powerful Academy Award-winning song echoes from the ship.

The evening concludes with more family dancing on the pool deck, followed by fun just for adults in the nightclub featuring dance performances and frozen specialty drinks.

Adventures Ashore in Norway

Disney Cruise Line guests who travel aboard the Disney Magic to Norway, the land that inspired Arendelle from “Frozen,” have the opportunity to join exciting Port Adventures that bring this fairytale setting to life. One signature adventure ashore in Ålesund, Norway, created exclusively for Disney Cruise Line, immerses guests in the splendor and charm of Norway, with the help of Anna and Elsa, in an enchanting storybook village.

Other shore excursions take Disney Cruise Line guests to discover the breathtaking natural wonders, stunning architecture and rich Scandinavian culture depicted in the film. Seven-night voyages begin May 29, 2016, sailing through Norwegian fjords and calling on ports including Stavanger, Ålesund, Geiranger, and Bergen, Norway.

Disney Dreams… An Enchanted Classic

In Summer and Beyond

Adding to the excitement, offerings debuted in 2015 continue this summer and beyond.

Aboard the Disney Magic, Anna, Elsa and Olaf are part of the line up of beloved Disney characters who together teach a young girl the power of her dreams in the Disney Cruise Line original production, “Disney Dreams … An Enchanted Classic.” Scenes featuring “Frozen” characters include renditions of three popular songs: “Let it Go,” “For the First Time in Forever” and “In Summer.” The show segment is a heartfelt, humorous and memorable tribute to the “Frozen” film, preserving its endearing and playful tones with an inspiring message. Special effects are magical, with a snowfall throughout the theatre and a breathtaking transformation of the young girl’s room into her own ice palace.

On all four Disney ships, Olaf is giving warm hugs alongside Anna and Elsa. Children and families have the opportunity to meet and take photographs with their favorite “Frozen” friends on their royal tour of the Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.

The Extraordinary Wines of Rioja

Last week we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the Rioja Wine & Tapas Festival in LA celebrating the wine regions deeply rooted history and even more remarkable selection of wines. This famed wine region of Spain is nestled between mountains and numerous rivers delivering a dynamic range of grapes and flavors. Many may not be of aware of these wines as they haven’t received the same commercial success in the states as such other popular wine types, i.e. Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etc. However, the D.O.Ca Rioja (Regulatory Board) would like to change that. With more than 30 wineries showcasing their superb blends and grape varietals, it was no wonder why the region is so eager to have others enjoy their exquisite selection.

Rioja is Spain’s oldest and most prominent wine region producing tremendous flavors along with great values. While it’s said the area has beautiful scenery, a welcoming culture, extraordinary architecture and great cuisine, it’s a bit unfortunate these wines are more prevalent in our local restaurants and stores. After a brief meeting with the representatives of from The Consejo Regulator of the D.O.Ca Rioja, it was on to the tastings!

Rioja Event-25

This years event was held at the timeless and gracious Union Station, something most of us probably don’t get to visit often enough. Entering underneath the newer and stunning glass domed roof, visitors must walk through the corridor of train and bus stations in which will lead to the original 1930s Union Station. The structure combines the styles of Art Deco, Mission Revival and Streamline Monerne with elements of Dutch Colonial Revival architecture. The giant arm chairs for waiting passengers help build the atmosphere giving off an impression of being in the romanticized era.

Event tables and tastings were set-up within the original ticketing lobby with food and further wine tastings taking place in one of the garden courtyards. This all added up to quite the event. If only there was away for myself to have this wine all the time!

Like many wines of certain regions, wines from Rioja require a DOCa seal to ensure it meets the strict qualifications required to be claimed an authentic Rioja wine. Each label describes the tastes exactly to what one should expect using a classification system based on aging in oak barrels and bottles and the types of varietals used.

Cosecha
Younger wines in their first or second year. The label is also used in a minority of wines which fall outside the below categories. Considered great sipping wines, they pair well with cheeses and simple pasta dishes.

Crianza
Wines which are at least in their third year, having spent a minimum of 1 year in cask and several months in a bottle. For white wines, the minimum cask aging period is 6 months. Red Crianza wines are known as Rioja’s wine of choice on a daily basis. These contain a distinctive Tempranillo character of cherry and spice and pairs well with most foods.

Reserva
Aged for a minikin of 3 years, with at least 1 year in cask, these wines are selected from the best vintages that have good aging potential. For white wines, the minimum aging period is 2 years with at least 6 months in cask. These wines are known best for their deep and complex flavors pairing well with braised dishes, grilled foods and game.

Gran Reserva
Selected wines from exceptional vintages, these wines are required to have spent at least 2 years in oak casks and 3 years ing a bottle. For white wines, the minus aging period is 4 years with at least 1 year in cask. Made only in exceptional vintages, these offer an intense depth of flavor with hints of cedar and wild berries.

I am no wine sommelier nor amateur, but rather a novice. While I know I had some superb wines that matched my pallet well, I wont be able to go through them all. Throughout the tasting room were some delectable cheeses and meets. Iberia Club provided their Jamon de Bellota, which is ham from free-range pigs that roam oak forests (called dehesas) along the border between Spain and Portugal, and eat only acorns during this last period. No words can describe this fatty delicacy.

Outside we were treated to a small variety of tapas or appetizers/snacks that pair perfectly to their complex wines. Needless to say, the event was lovely. The lines got a little long for food, however it was never a challenge getting wine. Now if the trains would just have a better weekend schedule for longer commutes, then we would be in business!

I am excited to get my hands on some more wines from the Rioja region and look forward to their ongoing success. Definitely keep an eye out for them with a personal suggestion for a Reserva with many strong tannins. These well-balanced tannins and spicy characteristics may surprise even the most soft pallets out there. Such flavor, such complexity and depth, gives a new benchmark for all other wines.

Enjoy some photos from the event!
