Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo Take This Holiday Season by Storm

This holiday season is all about Mario. And Link. And Yoshi. And Samus. And Kirby. And … well, a lot of classic video game characters. That’s because Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the first round of amiibo figures, Nintendo’s first foray into the toys-to-life category, are both now available, right in time for the holiday shopping season. Nintendo’s favorite characters are going to be everywhere, whether on the battlefields of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, on store shelves as must-have amiibo figures or at the top of everyone’s holiday wish lists.

“Launching Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo on the same day kicks off the holiday shopping season with a bang … and a smash,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “With a wide range of amiibo figures to choose from and a new Super Smash Bros. game on Wii U with more features than ever before, shopping for the Nintendo fan on your list will be easy this year.”

With amiibo, Nintendo is letting people experience games in fun new ways. By tapping an amiibo figure to the Wii U GamePad controller, gaming’s most recognizable characters can be used in different ways in many compatible games. Some games, like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, will save data to the amiibo, while other games, like Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors, will give you bonus content just for tapping an amiibo to the GamePad. There’s no need to purchase an additional portal accessory!

When the first round of amiibo launches on Nov. 21, 12 characters will be available: Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby and Marth. Zelda, Luigi, Diddy Kong, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon amiibo will be released in December, with additional figures launching throughout 2015. Individual amiibo can be used across multiple compatible games, a first for the toys-to-life category. For example, players who own a Link amiibo can use it as a fighting partner in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, to get a fun racing suit for their Mii characters in Mario Kart 8 and to access a special weapon in Hyrule Warriors. After tapping an amiibo figure in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the amiibo appears on the selection screen as a custom version of the character in the game. Players don’t control the amiibo character itself; the character acts as the players’ battle companion, fighting alongside or against them. Players can use amiibo as a partner, brawl with them in teams or have amiibo battle each other. In a first for the franchise, a special mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U lets up to eight players battle simultaneously on select stages in local multiplayer. And these battles can be a combination of real-life players and amiibo – one player vs. seven amiibo, four vs. four or even an all-amiibo battle with eight amiibo characters duking it out for victory! As players battle, amiibo gradually level up and learn how to fight through battles with players, other amiibo characters and computer players.

Even without the added fun of amiibo, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is easily the most robust version of Super Smash Bros. ever created. Coming off the heels of the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game, the first portable entry in the series, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U offers even more fun and exclusive content than ever before. In addition to a giant roster of classic video game characters and all the fighting action that fans of the series have fallen in love with over the years, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U offers plenty of new modes and stages that aren’t found anywhere else that will keep fans playing the game throughout the holiday season and well into 2015.

Among the almost-too-numerous-to-count new features in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the ability to use the touch screen of the Wii U GamePad to create custom stages. Players who own the Nintendo 3DS version of the game can even use their Nintendo 3DS systems to control the action on the TV screen, in addition to Nintendo GameCube controller support and a variety of other available control options. (The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U accessory is required for GameCube controller support.) Nintendo recently premiered a video that detailed these, and more than 50 other, new features unique to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Fans who can’t wait to play the game with a Nintendo GameCube controller can purchase the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game bundled with the new GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U accessory and a custom Super Smash Bros. Disney Reveals 'Cinderella' Trailer and Poster!

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). With the aim of enabling safe and comfortable use of apps in cars, the BMW Group was an early driver of smartphone integration and has already certified numerous apps for access in BMW and MINI vehicles. These apps have been optimised for use during a journey, can be operated via the iDrive Controller or MINI Controller without distracting the driver and are viewed in the Control Display or the MINI Centre Instrument respectively.

This app has been specially certified by BMW for safe in-car use. The app uses the BMW Group’s A4A (Apps for Automotive) technology and can be downloaded for iOS-based devices from the Apple App Store. Having connected their smartphone to the car via the USB socket or snap-in adapter and launched the app, users are presented with its various functions via the iDrive Controller/MINI Controller, the Control Display/MINI Centre Instrument and the car’s audio system. To use the app in BMW and MINI models, the BMW ConnectedDrive Services or MINI Connected option needs to be specified.

The Queen Mary Unveils CHILL – The Coolest Place in SoCal – November 21

Hot off the heels of a record breaking year for Dark Harbor, The Queen Mary’s full holiday event season continues as the coolest winter wonderland in Southern California, CHILL, prepares to open on November 21. New in 2014, all CHILL guests can enjoy unlimited access to The Ice Kingdom, ice tubing, ice skating with skate rentals and a visit on the Queen Mary ship with the purchase of general admission tickets.

This season The Ice Kingdom at CHILL will showcase holidays in the Golden State with the magic of a California Christmas theme meticulously hand sculpted by a team of international artists, and made entirely out of 2 million pounds of ice. The California Christmas theme begins with a traditional poinsettia entrance lined with toy soldiers standing over seven-feet tall. Next comes the candy cane forest with ten-foot candy canes that unveil a surfing Santa shredding through twenty-foot tall waves. Guests can gaze at the giant ice Christmas tree with tons of gifts for boys and girls and Jolly Old St. Nicholas on the rooftops with his team of reindeer. A nativity scene, forest of penguins and the fairytale kingdom with the almighty ice queen round out the California Christmas theme in The Ice Kingdom.

The Ice Kingdom is kept at a chilling 9-degrees Fahrenheit to preserve the glistening ice sculptures. Public parkas are available, and guests are encouraged to bring their own jackets, hats and gloves to stay warm while inside the giant igloolike exhibit.

The Glacier Glide at CHILL offers guests unlimited ice tubing down six-lanes made entirely out of ice that stand more than two stories tall and 100-feet long. Guests can enjoy a perfect Southern California evening on a yuletide glide on the CHILL Ice Rink presented by the Port of Long Beach. The world-class 6,500 square foot outdoor ice skating rink gives skaters an awe inspiring view of the majestic Queen Mary, complete with twinkling lights installed just for the holidays, on her world famous stacks. This year ice skate rentals are included with each ticket or guests are welcome to bring their own skates.
