Disney's “Into the Woods” Teaser Trailer

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

Rob Marshall, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directs the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics. Produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, “Wicked” producer Marc Platt and Callum McDougall, “Into the Woods” will be released in theaters Dec. 25, 2014.

Starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine, “Into the Woods” is a humorous and heartfelt musical that follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Incredible Special Effects in Ghost The Musical will leave you a believer

Who would have ever thought of turning the Acadamy Award-winning film GHOST into a full blown musical? Fortunately, the original writer BRUCE JOEL RUBIN jumped onboard and was able to deliver an incredible modern-day adaptation of this beloved film.

GHOST – THE MUSICAL has taken the core of this classic and turned it up a notch with dazzling special effects and illusions leaving the audience in awe while adding impressive dance numbers and new powerful songs that build upon this already heartfelt story.

This Broadway and West End production includes the direction by Tony Award-winner MATTHEW WARCHUS (Matilda, Boeing-Boeing) and choreography by ASHLEY WALLEN. Original music and lyrics was created by a team of Grammy Award-winners, including DAVE STEWART (Eurythmics) and GLEN BALLARD (Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill”). Not to mention, the ever unforgettable “Unchained Melody” performed by THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS from the film, has made it on to the production in an all-new way!

The musical is set in modern day New York City yet remains a timeless fantasy tale about the power of love. The production makes this overly apparent with the overuse of some selfies the stars take onstage, but I digress. Walking back to their apartment one night after a romantic dinner and a show, Sam and Molly are mugged, leaving Sam dead on a dark street. Sam is trapped a ghost between this world and the next and unable to leave Molly, who he learns is in danger. With the help of a phony storefront psychic, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hopes of saving her life.

You may actually be unfamiliar with this relatively new musical. The musical has actually been seen by more than a million people worldwide starting with an original production from Britain and made its way to Broadway shortly thereafter.

The audience can be quickly thrown off by the new direction of Molly. That early 90’s look from DEMI MOORE may not have worked as well for the stage. Replacing the short brunette boyish haircut is a young curly haired blonde. By no means is this a complaint or something that really affected the show, but definitely duly noted.

Molly Jensen is played by the wonderfully cute KATIE POSTOTNIK (Rock of Ages) with her counterpart Sam Wheat being played by the talented STEVEN GRANT DOUGLAS (Rent, Aida, Avenue Q). The two really are the rock of the show with only a couple of supporting characters. Luckily these two are very strong and really carry the show along with who other than Oda Mae Brown, the psychic con-artist that has more talent than she realized, played by the hilarious CARLA R. STEWART (Ain’t Misbehavin’, Grease, Rent). The sleazy untrustworthy friend Carl is played a ROBBY HALTIWANGER whom was also in Rent. Both male leads played Roger once upon a time and I could totally see it, but their voices lend well in this show.

Molly was as adorable as ever and the character really gets to shine with some impressive ballads including “With You” and “Nothing Stops Another Day”. POSTOTNIK gets to some big solo attention and really captivates the crowd with some emotional songs. Sam as well has some strong solos with DOUGLAS really shining in the second act. However, it is their duet “Three Little Words” that helped get this musical going toward the beginning where they play over each other. It is more of song that helps progress the story rather than many of them that builds on the emotion.

In every musical though, there is always that one person that truly shines and helps the show to the next level. In GHOST it is no doubt CARLA R. STEWART as Oda Mae Brown. She’s outrageously funny with perfect timing and just the right amount of over-the-top laughs. She got more applause than anyone else out there. She also has some fantastic songs diving into that gospel sound that would have lent well to Whoopi Goldberg.

The film was highly reliant on many special effects, which created some challenges to creating a stage production of it. PAUL KIEVE has created effects for over 100 international productions. A top notch illusionist would be warranted for such an effect heavy show. This production pulls all the stops with incredible realistic effects including Sam walking through a door, inanimate objects floating around the stage, characters flying away and people disappearing and reappearing right before your eyes.

The difficulty of pulling off some of these effects includes some rather dark scenes and bright lights shining right at the audience in order to adjust their eyes so they can’t see as well. This is definitely something can cause some discomfort at points; it’s needed, but ye be warned.

ghost2

With so many different large scenes needed, a great deal of the backdrops and effects use projections and screens. I am one that quickly gets frustrated when these are used often, especially with over use of scrims. However, it is done tastefully and it works perfectly for this show. Without them, I don’t know how they could have done this adaptation. You’ll be amazed at how fluid and impressive many of these effects are throughout the show.

Of course, special effects should be in support of the subject matter in which in this case they definitely are. Thankfully, this musical offers so much more. The musical numbers are big and welcomed except for a couple that are pretty out there. There is a solid musical consistency throughout, but there are a few songs mixed in between that made me question the necessity of some songs.

The second act remains strong with a great tempo even with the longer than usual running time. I felt for the characters, and I found myself quite emotional. It’s exactly what one should be looking for in an adaptation of GHOST. There are many memorable songs and moments in this show and I know I will be thinking about this one for a while.

GHOST – THE MUSICAL
follows the film pretty closely with only small differences that doesn’t change the plot or characters in anyway, something that is difficult to accomplish in movie to stage adaptations. Fans of the film shouldn’t be disappointed. If anything, audiences should enjoy this new life that has been given to this classic. It’s a story that plays well to everyone that most can find relatable. I don’t mean with ghost encounters, but with the loss of a love one and not getting that last goodbye. It’s that important rule of life that I find is something that I cannot be reminded of enough; live in the now.

GHOST – THE MUSICAL is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts – Segerstrom Hall

It is recommended for ages 13+ for mild violence, mature themes and dialogue.

WHOOSH! Promises a Safe Way to Clean Your Mobile Devices

Let’s face it, our phones and tablets are dirty. They may appear clean on the surface when wiping off the display with our shirt, pant leg, or a random micro-fiber cloth that we share with a pair glasses. However, Time Magazine published an article from the London School of Hygiene & Topical Medicine, University of London stating that “1 in 6 cell phones [are] contaminated with fecal matter.”

WhOOSH

We put these devices to our faces on a daily basis and we “clean” them with a cloth that we share with either our glasses or other electronics we own. Luckily WHOOSH! is there to save us from our fecal infested smart phones and tablets. Fecal matter is not the only culprit that exists on our phones either! WHOOSH! states that, “Over 80% of mobile phones have some form of bacterial contamination!” Nasty right? It makes me want to never touch someone’s phone or tablet again, but that is nearly impossible for me in my line of work.

WHOOSH! was present at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Shows (CES) in Las Vegas in January. As I was approaching their booth, I noticed a large crowed with people surrounding a live demo. People were handing to what I referred to as “The WHOOSH! Ladies” their phones just for a clean to see the magic. Like a Lemming, I handed my phone over as well. I was really glad I did so. My phone had never felt or looked so clean before! Well, it did when it was new. There were no streaks or haze and it glistened like a beacon. I thought to myself, “I have to get some of this!” I was given a sample and I used it all during CES. Sadly I emptied the bottle when I got home because I was cleaning all my electronic screens with it.

consumerwhooshWHOOSH! claims their Screen Shine “is the only screen and device cleaner that is guaranteed safe for all screens, 100% non-toxic, and fingerprint resistant.” I was in OCD overload and extremely satisfied with how this cleaner worked. Luckily WHOOSH! sent us some more samples to use. I noticed that fingerprints were less apparent and my phone and tablet didn’t feel grimy with hand oils. The magic isn’t just in their spray either. The cloth is also part of the equation and each one of their SKUs ships with an “anti-microbial screen cleaning microfiber cloth.”

You may ask yourself, “How safe is this powerful cleaner?” Luckily the ingredients are non-toxic, alcohol & ammonia free, and it’s biodegradable. Furthermore, the Screen Shine is also antistatic, streak and haze free. The prices for WHOOSH! a reasonable and market competitive as well.

WHOOSH! Screen Shine come in 3 packs:

Pocket (.3 fluid ounces) for $5.99
Go (1 fluid ounce) for $10
Duo+ (one 3.4 fluid ounce bottle and one .3 fluid ounce bottle) for $20

Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Review

Guardians Line Up

“I come from Earth, a planet of outlaws. My name is Peter Quill. There’s one other name you may know me by. Star Lord.”

As the superhero genre has taken off over the last decade and a half, there’s no denying at times as fun a the films can be, sometimes they can all feel very vanilla if they’re all telling origin stories. It’s a sad pitfall that many of the films fall into when they’re created on inception. It hasn’t stopped a lot of the films from being good, or even great, but it all starts to meld together. But leave it to James Gunn to shake the status quo and really shoot a shot of adrenaline into the genre, with his brilliant, fun, and rather dazzling new film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy. Set on outer edges of the Marvel’s cosmos, the film follows a ragtag group of scoundrels who must band together as a madman known as Ronan the Accuser threatens to destroy the universe, as he acquires a weapon of significant power that will make planets buckle at their knees, before ultimately destroying them. Faced with terrifying odds, Starlord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot must stand together, when they couldn’t be farther apart, as Ronan’s warpath begins to stampede across the galaxy.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a really exciting, fun, and epic space opera film in the vein of Star Wars, and the fact that film achieves that is a testament to James Gunn, the film’s director. Gunn has been a popular director inside cinephile circles for a long time, with his script for the remake of Dawn of the Dead and his films Slither and Super getting a lot of acclaim. But he had never really broken out into big budget filmmaking until now, but with how he handles this film, you’d think he had been doing it all his life. For Gunn, this film was really a chance for him to be very creative, where he really got to set up a whole new side to the Marvel Universe we had never seen before. There’s so much to take in, as all the planets, people, aliens, and ships have such a unique feel to them, there’s really nothing quite like it. Gunn really uses his budget and his creativity to their full extent, creating a fully realized universe, that you just feel swept away in. It’s honestly the most visually breathtaking film in the entire Marvel universe, which really comes from Gunn and what he has created. There’s so many scenes that just take your breath away, with sweeping shots of space, planets, characters, and action that are so well shot, they just stay with you. Gunn’s action is so fun, and so well defined, you can’t help but feel swept up in it. The film doesn’t have any shaky cam, it’s all beautifully choreographed and put together, really giving you an all encompassing look at everything that’s happening. There’s a real beauty to the whole film, as grim and grimy as some of it may seem, but that comes from the fact that the film has a relative pulpy feel to it. It really lets the fun and excitement take center stage, making it feel very colorful and otherworldly, yet tangible and close to home.

Part of the massive appeal of Guardians of the Galaxy is in its cast, which features the likes of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel, just in the lead roles. One of the biggest, and honestly most exciting parts of the film is the fact that the biggest stars in the film aren’t ever seen on screen, they’re voicing the two standout characters in the film, Rocket and Groot. In a way, Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel’s Groot are the new Han Solo and Chewbacca for this generation. There’s a real fun, bizarre, but sweet nature to their friendship, and the way the two characters play off each other is fantastic. These two absolutely steal the film, with Diesel’s Groot in particular being a very fun and lovable character. There’s a real innocence to the character that makes him so easy to root for, as he grins stupidly through the film, even when he’s fighting. But what’s so refreshing is seeing a film where the cast isn’t made up of A-List actors, really giving new faces a chance to shine, which is absolutely true of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, also known as Starlord. For so long, Pratt was known as the guys from Parks and Recreation and a guy who would do bit parts in comedies like The Five Year Engagement. The fact that Gunn and Marvel took a chance to cast him as the lead in this film, something so different speaks to the film’s brilliance. Pratt is so good as Peter Quill, and he really makes the role his own. It’s so different than anything he’s done before, and that’s what makes it so fantastic. He owns the role of Quill in a way no other actor really could, and he may be the world’s most unconventional hero, but that’s why you root for him. There’s a real everyman quality to his character, which is part of why he is so likable, and it also makes him one of the best heroes in the entire Marvel Universe.

Zoe Saldana is a known actress, but her character of Gamora is different than any that she has played before. There’s a real elegance to her character, and a real pain underneath as well. She’s so fun to watch, and she gets some of the best action scenes in the entire film, really getting a chance to shine. But it’s really Dave Bautista who surprises as Drax the Destroyer. He’s so charismatic in the role, and he honestly holds his own against everyone else, and stands out many times. His action scenes are definitely some of the best in the film, because he gets to use what he already knows from wrestling, and use on screen. Drax comes off as intense, funny, and badass, and he’s just a blast on screen, and you can see why Gunn chose him. Karen Gillan’s Nebula, who is Ronan’s right hand, is great as well. She’s so fun to watch in the role, because it’s so different for her, and while she doesn’t get a ton to do, she still owns the role and makes it her own. Additionally, Lee Pace, who plays the film’s villain Ronan, is so terrifying to watch. There’s a real scary demeanor to the character, as he’s a extremist who believes what he’s doing is right by old traditions set forth by his people. He’s calm, intense, and commanding, and Pace plays the role eloquently. Many people complain about the lack of screen time or the way the villains have been handled in the Marvel films, but Gunn found a way to make one of the universes strongest, most ruthless villains. He works so well, especially in the context of the film.

A film like Guardians of the Galaxy usually doesn’t have such a cool and varied soundtrack, but music is actually a huge part of this film, as its actually Starlord’s last connection to Earth. His walkman, which is pretty much the heart of his character, features a mixtape that is the last thing that reminds him of home. The tape, which plays throughout the film, features some great music, and it’s so varied. It really gives the film some added character, really giving it personality. With things like Blues Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling or Cherry Bomb by The Runaways plays, it just feels right in the film. Any lesser filmmaker would have put the songs in, but it could have felt shoehorned in, but here, it feels like a natural part of the film. Gunn just makes magic on screen, in the music, with his actors, and in the action. It’s incredible what he was able to accomplish here. The only real bummer is the film is so much fun, it feels like it could be a bit longer. Nothing really feels shortchanged, but just to get the chance to spend more time in this world, with these characters, would be a great thing, and that really comes down to the fact that Gunn has just made a really excellent film.

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best summer blockbuster of the year. It’s fun, exciting, full of great characters and performances, and a fantastic soundtrack. Gunn has brought big budget space operas back in a big way, and it already feels like the second film already needs to be here. This is a roller coaster ride of a film that just fires on all cylinders, making it not just the one of the best summer blockbusters of the year, but one of the best Marvel Studios films period. This is the most complete, exciting, and fresh film they’ve made, and it really opens the door to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we’ve never seen before. Films just don’t get much better than this.

Breaking News! “The Purge: Anarchy,” a New “Halloween horror nights” ScareZone

p2

As the gates to “Halloween Horror Nights” open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, “The Purge: Anarchy,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ new thriller, which scored the highest opening for a horror film this year.

“The Purge: Anarchy” scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie’s premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will be inhabited by average citizens transformed into sadistic felons during this period of government-sanctioned lawlessness. Like civilians in the movie fighting to survive, guests will be at the mercy of cunning wit, luck and speed as they attempt to outsmart and outlive the anarchy brought about by those who believe in an “eye for an eye.”

The Purge: Anarchy, the sequel to last summer’s surprise hit, moves from the confines of a suburban neighborhood to the streets as the government begins its annual 12-hour Purge to ensure that the crime rate stays below one percent for the rest of the year. With all emergency services suspended, it’s the one night when society regulates itself without thought of punishment or fear of retribution. For average people who do not have the means to barricade themselves indoors with a state-of-the-art security system, anarchy rules and no one is safe. In this new story, an unlikely group of five citizens discover how far they will go to protect themselves and, ultimately, each other, as they fight to survive a dangerous night fraught with impossible decisions.

From director and writer James DeMonaco (The Purge, Assault on Precinct 13), The Purge: Anarchy stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Carmen Ejogo (Away We Go), Zach Gilford (Devil’s Due), Kiele Sanchez (A Perfect Getaway) and Michael K. Williams (The Wire).

“‘Halloween Horror Nights’ is about taking guests out of their comfort zones and placing them at the core of unimaginable horror,” said John Murdy, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Creative Director for and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “Because the premise of ‘The Purge’ could theoretically happen, our scare-zone elevates that sense of fear and forces you to really watch your back. Imagining how your neighbor, friend or enemy could take revenge on you without retribution because you wronged them takes horror to a whole new level, and we wanted to bring that gut-wrenching terror to every one of our guests.”

“‘The Purge’” scarezone will invade the streets of ‘Halloween Horror Nights’, taking up most of our New York back lot. The chaos that reigns in the film will be replicated nightly, but now our guests can actually attempt to survive the night themselves,” said Michael Aiello, Director of Entertainment – Creative Development, Universal Orlando Resort. “The familiar emergency broadcast will be heard announcing the commencement of the annual Purge, and all hell will literally break loose.”

Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” events have a more than 20-year history of creating incredibly entertaining, horrifying Halloween experiences that are consistently rated the nation’s best. The events on each coast feature highly-themed, disturbingly real, haunted mazes based on everything from films to nightmares – and streets filled with hundreds of specially trained “scareactors” in uniquely themed scare-zones. A Look Into the Guardians of the Galaxy Press Conference

2014-07-19 14.41.44

With just a little less than two weeks before Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy lands in theaters, journalists and film bloggers were invited out to Walt Disney Studios over the weekend to see Marvel’s new film, which opens August 1st, and sit down and get a chance to talk those involved in the making of the film. On hand at the end was the film’s director, James Gunn, and his eccentric cast for the film, from left to right, Michael Rooker, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, and Benicio del Toro. The group shared stories about making the film, what it was like to be taking a massive risk in the Marvel Universe with a fairly unknown property, and much more.

The panel started off with a question aimed at James Gunn, asking him what it was that drew him to the project about this unknown group of characters, and if the fact they were so unknown made the project more daunting or more liberating. Gunn said:

It was frankly liberating. You know, for me, I think I would’ve had a harder time trying to fit into the regular Marvel scheme of things. This gave me a chance to take what I loved about Marvel movies and Marvel comics and create a whole new universe, which is really been the most exciting thing for me, in my entire professional career.

His elation and excitement for the characters and the universe, and the fact he go to build this from the ground up really was infectious, and you could tell how much it meant to him to really get a chance to do this. Gunn had done so many small things previously, so getting the chance to create this vast new side to the Marvel universe was a huge deal for him, and it shows.

Not long after, Chris Pratt was asked what it was like, or what it took, to create the attitude of his character Peter Quill, also known as Starlord. He was very humble about it, saying that it really didn’t come so much from himself, as it did from Gunn’s vision for the character:

2014-07-19 14.44.56

In terms of the attitude, that was something that like, you know, and kind of the whole process for me on this one, was just trusting James, really, and taking big swings and sometimes falling flat on my face. The big challenge for me was to ignore the embarrassment of being an actor. It’s pretty embarrassing what you do, you’ve got people pointing cameras at you and hundreds of people watching you as you’re trying to be great, and often almost every time you’re not. And then, there’s one moment where you are, and the editor will dig through all the s**t to find it, and then put it in the movie. So the challenge is not like finding the attitude, it’s being open and willing to go for it and try new things, and having a director you can trust. So the attitude is not something I intended or created, it’s something James intended and created by getting me to try different things.

Gunn was quick to give Chris credit though, saying he really did bring the character to life, and it wasn’t so much his direction as it was the way Chris just was in the role. Pratt than began joking about the press conferences themselves, and how he really didn’t know how to handle it, and he’ll get better at them eventually:

I’m going to get better at this. I’m never done this that much. So uh, acting is something I’ve learned how to do through trial and error, you know? And I’m sure press conferences will be the same thing.

This was followed up with a question that came up to the fact that Chris is so perfect for the role, and how did he go to get it, and did he see himself as the perfect fit for the character:

Umm, I guess, uh, I didn’t…people probably didn’t see me, I’m not even sure I saw myself in this kind of a role, but what’s really kind of nice about this movie, and I believe this, is that we did something with this movie that’s never been done before. I think this is unlike anything thats ever been done, and I think anyone who has seen this movie would agree. I’ve never seen anything like this movie before, and uh, so I don’t think I was right to do anything similar to whats been done before, you know, I wouldn’t have been right to do other movies. So maybe people wouldn’t have seen me in this role, but that’s because they maybe weren’t able to have the vision that James had for what this would be, you know? He just told me during the audition, “I’m just looking for someone to come in here and own this and do their thing,” and at the time I was sort of having an identity crisis as an actor, I didn’t know what I was, like an action guy, or a comedy guy, and I thought maybe I could do a combination of both. There’s nothing out there that’s like it, maybe I can develop something, and my manager kept saying, “Guardians of the Galaxy, man!” And I finally said maybe you’re right, lets go meet on it. And then James said I just want someone to do their thing, and part of me thought, “OK, well then I’ll just do my thing, and if it’s not right, that’s OK.”

Gunn than continued from there, talking about how he initially didn’t even want to see Pratt for the role, because he didn’t think the chubby guy from Parks & Rec would fit:

We had screened test at least twenty people, actually screened test these twenty people. Big stars, no names, looking for the right person, because I really wanted somebody who could embody this character, and take it beyond what was on the page, in the same way Robert Downey, Jr. did for Iron Man, essentially. And nobody blew me away. Some people were really good, maybe some people were great, but no one blew me away. Sarah Finn, our casting director, really deservers the credit for Chris in a lot of ways, because she kept putting his picture in front of me, and saying, “You know, what about this guy? Why don’t you meet with him?” And I was like, “The chubby guy from Parks & Rec? You’re stupid.” And she kept doing, and kept doing it, and finally she like, really, I don’t even remember agreeing to see Chris. I just remember her saying, “OK, after this guy, Chris Pratt is here.” I was actually kind of mad, thinking I didn’t want to see him, but you know, then Chris came in, and he started to read, this is one hundred percent true, that within twenty seconds I was like, “Holy s**t, that’s the guy! That’s who we’ve been looking for.” He had this thing that was himself, and sometimes a role and a person are just meant for each other, and that’s what I felt this was, and I turned around and Sarah Finn was sitting behind me, and I was like, “He’s the guy. Chubby or not, if he’s chubby the world’s going to have to get ready for the first chubby superhero, because he’s still going to be better than all the
other people still!”

One of the biggest parts of the film is actually tied to Starlord’s walkman, one of the only things he has left from his life on Earth, and the mixtape that he has had since he was a kid. The music on the tape is pivotal to the film itself, and Gunn was asked how he seamlessly added the music into the film, without it feeling tacked on.

Yeah, well I mean for me, I started the script, there’s a script for my script, and then it didn’t one hundred percent speak to me, so I wanted to make some pretty major changes, and I rewrote the whole script. And the very first thing I thought of was this idea of the walkman and the cassette tape, which is really this character’s connection to his home planet of Earth. And that was the emotional center of the film. If the MacGuffin of the film is this orb that everyone’s chasing after, the emotional center is this walkman, and so it was just a natural part of the screenwriting process. All the songs that you see in the movie, Hooked on a Feeling, Redbone, Come and Get Your Love, were all written into the film, and were part of the screenplay, so they were from the ground floor up.

Zoe Saldana, who plays the beautiful but deadly Gamora, talked about what it was like coming into the film, and how she came up with the sort of fighting style she thought the character should have:

I wanted her fighting technique to be very, very different. Obviously when you show up, and you’re sort of the last person cast, and everybody’s just ready to go, the stunt coordinators have already designed the fights and they’ve helped the stunt woman working on what you’re going to do, and you sort of come in and just add your last little tweaks. I just didn’t want Gamora to look like any typical action person thats just like very martial artsy, and just does those Underworld jumps and lands on the ground and the ground breaks and s**t. I wanted her to be a little more graceful, and more antique, with a very classy way that she fights. My husband, one of his colleagues, was showing us, as I was sort of doing research for the role of Gamora, she was showing us her last collection of work she was going to do, that wasn’t ready for the public. But she basically recorded this bullfighter from Spain, dancing a duel, a fight, and leading this bull with his sword and his cape. She shot it at 60 frames per second, so it’s very slow, and I’d never seen anyone move so, so smoothly, and it’s just such a seductive dance, and I thought, “That’s Gamora!” She’s a woman, and she just has to be very seductive in the way that she tricks her enemy into falling into their own death.

It’s pretty cool seeing how much thought she put into how she wanted Gamora to fight and come off. The fact she drew inspiration from bullfighters makes the character so much more interesting, and you can definitely see what she means in the film’s final product.

When Vin Diesel was asked about what it was like to join the Marvel Universe, he opened up quite a bit about how it happened, and how it actually helped him heal a lot after the the loss of his close friend Paul Walker:

I’m new to Marvel. I guess this whole thing started for me through a social media thing that was adamant about me doing something with Marvel. There wasn’t really a six month window to do a character at Marvel, so when Kevin Feige called me and said he and James were talking about me playing a role, I had no idea what role it would be. And they sent over a book of conceptual art, and I went into the living room with my kids and I opened up the book and asked the kids what character they wanted daddy to play, and they all pointed at the tree. I knew that was a good sign. It was at a, uh, for me it was at a very important time when I did this movie. Because it was in December, and it was the first time I was around humans again, and it was the first time I was working again, and there was something very therapeutic about it in my personal life, and I guess in my professional life too, dealing with death, and then playing a character who celebrates life in a way that Groot celebrates life. Something really beautiful happened in playing this role, something as an actor I could have never imagined, and that is when my kids see trees, they refer to the trees as my brothers and sisters. The idea to be associated with the trees like that is remarkable, it’s so much more gratifying than you could ever imagine. I was really lucky that that specific role came up.

Gunn than went on to praise Diesel, and his work as Groot:

I’ll just say real quick you guys, no one will ever, ever understand from the bottom of my heart how much Vin Diesel brings to that role. Because I sat and watched that movie a billion times with my voice in there, my brother Sean’s voice in there, and when he came in and said, “I am Groot,” it really filled out that whole character, and it’s really quite incredible. It made that character, who was a CGI character, suddenly complete. Ant it still doesn’t sound like Vin to me, it sounds like Groot! There was a weird sort of, you know, strange energy in the room when he was doing it, and I think a lot of people have felt after they’ve seen the movie that Groot is this emotional character. We even felt it when we were shooting. But I’m really eternally grateful to him for that performance, and a little freaked out by it.

The way the cast and the director of Guardians of the Galaxy talk about the film is really full of passion and love for this project that is very rare these days. It’s great to see people who genuinely love the characters, the universe, and about how the film came together, and how happy they were to be a part of this. This was very apparent from the way the panel talked about their time on the film, and their characters, and their co-stars, and we can only hope the film does well enough to see them return to the big screen sooner rather than later.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens on August 1, 2014, and check back later this week when our review for the film goes live on July 24th!
