Movie Review: "The Fifth Estate" Tries To Break The Mold

fifth1As soon as the movie gets rolling you will quickly get the sense you have seen this all before.  To summarize quickly, The Fifth Estate is The Social Network with a more political agenda and serious undertone.  Tuned off already?  Don’t be. This may be a formula Hollywood has tested and found success over the years, but the film doesn’t necessarily feel entirely old and tired.  It remains thought provoking whilst going from drama to suspense to a story we have all seen told before.

Not to make light over such a serious subject or a very current news event in our world, but there is something that The Fifth Estate doesn’t shy away from.  Director and producer Bill Condon (Kinsley, Dreamgirls, The Twilight Saga: Break Dawn, Parts 1 and 2) admittedly explained that he and the producers wanted to create more of a sensationalized drama to really captivate the audience and bring a story focused on the larger themes, and a better narrative, to life.

The Fifth Estate is not a docudrama.  Much of the film IS based off of two main books: “Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange and the World’s Most Dangerous Website” by one of the men the film is about, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, and the Guardian book “WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy” by David Leigh and Luke Harding.  These are books that are based off of direct relations with the WikiLeaks guru and creator Julian Assange, but they are just that; one side of the story.

The producers and writer Josh Singer (Fringe, The West Wing) knew just that and make no hidden agendas that this was all based off of true events.  Instead they created something that is based more upon the greater theme of the relationships between WikiLeaks creator Julian Arrange and his volunteer and only friend Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

After a brief explanation of how these two came together, The Fifth Estate stays with a narrative more geared toward Daniel’s point of view while maintaining a little empathy toward Julian and his purpose of the site.  They both care about privacy for the individual and transparency for organizations and government, but it is Julian’s lack of concern for the livelihood of the names mentioned in these documents that set Julian apart from Daniel and the rest of his recruits.

A wonderful aspect of this film is that I felt I was watching the real characters opposed to actors playing the role.  This is supported by using people not heavily known by the masses and/or actors that portray a character that is far removed from themself.  Julian Assange is portrayed by Star Trek’s Benedict Cumberbatch; an actor that I think many want to know more about, but really don’t know that much of as of yet.  His near puppet at times, Daniel  Domscheit-Berg is played by near-nominee Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Bastards, Rush) and was a perfect choice for me.

First of all, Daniel is actually German therefore truly fitting the part.  Secondly, I don’t think many will recognize him much allowing for the viewer to forget completely that it is indeed an actor portraying Berg.  This was by far the best aspect of the film.  Cumberbatch’s performance was more than stellar even with his fake Australian accent.  Of course he being English does help a little.  However, his sense of immense passion for his project brings this character to fruition.  Every monologue and poetic statement he makes brings you closer to him whether or not you disagree in what he stands for, but it’s important that you can understand why he feels that way.

This may be a fault in this film though because it’s not necessarily a true portrayal of any of the characters.  The trick will be if audience can separate what could be the truth from the story the filmmakers wanted to tell.

Many reviews will probably focus on the story of WikiLeaks and classified documents that were revealed along with creation of the software that came to be.  While this is a vital part to the story, THIS story is really about their relationships and moral challenges they will face with the content that is submitted to them.  I could go on and write my own novel just based off the productions notes, but I want to allow the movie to do this.  Plus, I’m just not as savvy with the history of WikiLeaks that I’m sure many of you are.

The film does follow a timeline of events and deals with the consequences put forth by revealing these confidential documents that may cause harm or death to names involved.  It really asks so many questions and dives deep into what is morally right.  Luckily it really leaves the audience to decide what is right even though at times it appears to be heading down a very bias path, but then later catches back up telling a story from different points of views.

This brings other characters into play from other volunteers of WikiLeaks to the men and women trying to take the unstoppable site down.  It brings into play how different news and information is spread in the world today and how the spread of news and information is nothing like it used to be.  Julian created a submission platform where the contributor was protected bringing into play the quote “give a man a mask and he’ll tell you the truth”.

The U.S. response team was based on several U.S. government insiders: White House Deputy National Security Advisor Sam Coulson, played by Anthony Mackie; Under Secretary of State Sarah Shaw, played by three-time Academy Award nominee Laura Linney; and James Boswell, Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs, played by none other than Stanley Tucci.

The chemistry between Linney and Tucci is incredible and both seem believable yet relatable based off of the side of the story we have all seen from the American mass media.  They even bring a bit comedy and light hearted subject matter to the movie with their little badgering.

No doubt The Fifth Estate brings phenomenal acting to the table and some powerful moments. The story is fascinating even though the relationship story is something we have seen portrayed in The Social Network, the creation of Apple, or the like.  If you couldn’t care less about the story of WIkiLeaks and the people behind it, then this may not be the film for you.  In fact, if you care more about the actual documents that were released, this film is not for that either.  This film brings to attention the moral questions raised by the mission of WikiLeaks and focuses on how it got to where it is today.

There are many underlining concerns that come into play that really take hold of the last quarter of the film.  I’m not even going to attempt to try to go through them all.  However, there are many questions that are important even more so today with recent current events.  The largest question remains who should be judge of which secrets we need to know and which are too dangerous to share?  Bill Condon directs it well leaving these answers more or less up to the view rather than taking a political agenda and telling us what to think.

I was pleased with the The Fifth Estate and the story it told while not pretending to be something it’s not.  The story flows even though many timespans are condensed or expanded.  The art direction with the challenging task of making messaging on the screen intense and captivating is creative and smart.  Even each shot is made more gorilla style with no blocking creating a more documentary feel to it while still having a look of a big-budget film.  It was an enjoyable time at the movies and is subject matter that is quite intriguing.  Just remember that this is just that, a film, a fictional film at that.  Well, for the most part.

Blu-Ray Review: The Little Mermaid

mermaid1In 1989, Disney Animation unleashed The Little Mermaid upon the world, ushering in another Golden Age of animation for the long struggling company.  This was the exact right film at the exact right time, and without it, we might never have been blessed with films such as Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin.  Having come off of a string of box-office failures, this film came at a critical moment for the company.  With an instantly iconic soundtrack, breathtakingly beautiful underwater animation, a healthy dose of humor and instantly compelling story of heroes, villains, and of course, true love, this film rightfully went on to dominate the box office, and eventually secured it’s place as a timeless classic that is still beloved almost 25 years later.

The newest addition to Disney’s Diamond Edition Collection, this is a must-own for all families.  No matter which viewing method you choose, the film has never looked better, thanks to a remarkable digital restoration.  It’s as sharp as the film has ever looked, and really enhances the artistry behind the animation.  There are 3 discs in this set, and all are fantastic ways to view the film.  If you have a 3D tv, the 3-D Blu-Ray is included.  While the film was obviously not initially designed for 3D, the underwater landscape of the film lends itself to a spectacular conversation process.  However, if you don’t have a 3D TV, you can also view via Blu-Ray or DVD.  Also included is a Digital Copy of the film, and a 10 music track download.

Included in that download is Part of Your World, as performed by Carly Rae Jepsen.  The music video to this track is one of the many extra features on the set.  Other features include a look inside Disney Animation today, including interviews with several animators who tell their stories of being inspired by The Little Mermaid as children.  This feature includes a tour of the facilities, a segment featuring their annual April Fools’ Caricature competition, and provides an overall feeling of what it would be like to work for and create art for such a historic company.

There’s also a fascinating documentary about the live-action reference footage shot for the film.  From the beginning, Disney Animation has brought in actors to perform the roles in their animated films.  The animators watch this footage, and use this as a guide in order to create movements as realistic as possible.  Their is a great deal of classic footage from films such as Alice In Wonderland and Snow White, as well as a significant amount of footage from the live-action reference footage from The Little Mermaid.  It’s a fascinating insight into the process.

Other features include a lecture given by composer Howard Ashman, a tour of the new Fantasyland in Disneyworld by the voice of Ariel herself, Jodi Benson, a deleted scene featuring a nerdy Merman named Herman, and Crab-E-Oke, which as you can probably guess, is karaoke hosted by Sebastian.

Overall, Disney has provided another terrific addition to their Diamond Collection.  Even with no extras at all, this would be a terrific release thanks to the beautiful restoration they performed on the film.  The film looks as if it just came out this year.  However, the features are a terrific bonus, both insightful and informative.   It doesn’t matter how old you were when it was released, The Little Mermaid holds a special place in the hearts of all those who have seen it, and will continue to do so for generations to come.  This is a great release for a timeless film.

2013 CHOC “Walk In The Park,” at Disneyland Resort is Sunday Oct 13.

Before the sun rises on Sunday, October 13, Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, will be filled with thousands of people coming together in support of the health and well-being of children. CHOC “Walk in the Park,” presented by Disneyland Resort, is the largest and most unique single pediatric walk event in the U.S.

choc1

Now in its 23rd year, the popular event benefits CHOC Children’s, a regional pediatric healthcare system serving children and families in Southern California and beyond. The 2013 walk covers three miles through Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park where “CHOC Walkers” get a special peek behind the magic before the parks open to the general public. At the end of the 5K walk, the event continues in the resort’s Downtown Disney District where event sponsors, hospital support groups, shops and restaurants have special offers for Walk participants.

Among the event’s estimated 15,000 walkers are participants from across the U.S. and around the world, including walkers from Canada, Mexico, Australia and South Korea.
Nearly 800 teams are expected, and include current and former patients and families, as well as doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. Walkers come together to celebrate the lives of children saved by CHOC Children’s, and to honor the memory of those children who bravely lost their battle against serious disease or illness.

It’s the biggest yearly fundraising effort for CHOC. Monies raised by the event support a variety of patient and family programs, including education, research and the adoption and utilization of the latest technologies to advance the health of children.

Last year’s event raised more than $2 million, and since its inception in 1990, the Walk has raised more than $21 million.

choc3

In order to help CHOC reach its goal of providing quality healthcare to the region’s two million children, each CHOC Walker must raise a minimum of $50 to participate in the Walk. Everyone can register at http://www.chocwalk.org and receive up-to-date event information at CHOC Foundation on Facebook and Twitter.

For the past 12 years, CHOC “Walk in the Park” has been held at the Disneyland Resort but the Resort’s commitment to CHOC began more than 50 years ago when Walt Disney himself championed the need for a children’s hospital in Orange County. Since then, the Disneyland Resort – executives, Cast Members, VoluntEARS and beloved characters – have contributed funds, time and tenderness to enhance CHOC’s environment of healing.

The Magic of Creating Snow for Disney's upcoming Animated Film "Frozen"

To celebrate the upcoming release of Disney’s animated feature film “Frozen,” the studio invited members of the press to see about 30 minutes of the film, which included the original song “Let it Go,” featuring Idina Menzel. The comedy-adventure follows Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), who sets off on an epic journey to find her sister, meeting Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven along the way. Elsa (voiced by Menzel) has used her powers to trap Arendelle in an eternal winter, and Anna and her new friends must battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

Throughout the day we had the opportunity to learn about the animation process and how the filmmakers used state of the art technology to create some amazing animation special effects.

snow1

One of the workshops we attended was The Character of Snow. We had the pleasure of meeting with Evan Goldberg (Animation Technology Manager), Dale Mayeda (Co-FX Supervisor), Marlon West (FX Supervisor) and Andy Selle (Principal Software Engineer), who were very excited to share their experience on working with “Frozen.” Walt Disney Animation has created some new tools for generating trees, adding snow, doing snow simulation, having characters walk in that snow and be able to behave in an art-directable fashion that they fit a certain aesthetic. Creating animated snow was a challenge since each snowflake is unique because it travels in different ways. So Disney decided to create their own snowflake generator which creates over 2000 snowflake shapes. The work they do at the Walt Disney Animation studios is not about realism but more about believability. Also there is a certain amount of homework done to create the magical worlds we see on screen with research trips to various locations.

frozen2

The team at Disney was excited to work on a film like “Frozen” and using that new technology to make the film even better. So why is snow so hard to work with? Characters have to interact with the snow, digging into it, get covered with it and walk in the snow. It’s always difficult because this really gives the audience a chance to see it close up without seeing all the usual FX Tricks.

Some other technologies that were used in “Frozen” include special motion cameras that are equipped with LED Lights that can track motion. It can put the FX Animations in the virtual world. Using a camera rig setup with motion sensors, the animations can track movements and use various types of camera angles to follow the animation sequences. Instead of using traditional 3D Animation software like Maya, which are hard to navigate around with a mouse and keyboard, this system allows smooth movement frame by frame. This also creates natural movement.

Check-out this Snow Demo that was created by Walt Disney Animation Studios exclusively for Socalthrills! This will give you an idea how detailed and textured the snow is.

It was fun to see these animators use computer technologies to bring to life a movie that is sure to please all ages. “Frozen” hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 27, 2013. For more information, check out Disney.com/Frozen, like us on Facebook: facebook.com/DisneyFrozen and follow us on Twitter: Twitter.com/DisneyAnimation.

We will be posting more behind-the-scenes of “Frozen” in the coming weeks. So be sure to come back and visit Socalthrills.com often!
