Movie Review: "Gravity"
Every couple of years, there is a movie that redefines modern cinema. A movie that raises the bar with technological advancements in areas like sound, cinematography, and visual effects. More often than not, these movies are in the sci-fi or fantasy genre. Some of the best examples are “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” “Jurassic Park,” “The Matrix,” “The Lord Of The Rings” Trilogy, “King Kong,” and “Avatar.” Last year, the movie “Life Of Pi” pushed the technological envelope yet again, telling a unique story of survival at sea with an unlikely passenger. But 2013 has a new contender for one of the most groundbreaking and challenging films ever made: “Gravity.” Strap on your seat belt moviegoers, and try to remember to breathe.
“Gravity” tells a what-if survival story set in what may be the most difficult environment imaginable: outer space. In her first mission, Dr. Ryan Stone is partnered with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (played by Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney). This fairly routine mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope turns into a nightmare as debris from a destroyed Russian satellite orbit the earth, causing a chain reaction of destruction traveling thousands of miles an hour. The debris field wipes out the Explorer Space Shuttle and the other crew, leaving Dr. Stone and Kowalski floating in space alone, with limited oxygen reserves and no radio contact to Houston. Their only chance is to make their way to the International Space Station, and hope that it has not been severely damaged by this cloud of wreckage. Considering the magnitude of the story, Bullock and Clooney manage to carry the weight of the entire movie. Bullock’s ability to portray fear and courage simultaneously as she struggles to stay alive will undoubtedly bring her recognition come awards season. And Clooney succeeds as the mentor and voice of reason in this time of peril.
There have been countless movies that take place outside earth’s atmosphere, but few have ever been able to capture it this realistically. Oscar® nominated director Alfonso Cuarón decided to take a unique approach to recreating outer space. Most notably, “Gravity” focuses on the vast, open darkness and the chilling silence that truly defines space. And Cuarón is no stranger to taking risks when it comes to his filmmaking style. This is the man that came on board the successful “Harry Potter” franchise and completely reinvented it with the third entry in 2004, “Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban.” That film, which many consider to be the best in the series, took a significantly darker tone and more artistic look than the previous two films. It was a decision that changed “Harry Potter” from a kid-friendly movie series into an adult movie series about emotion, fear, love and loss. Alfonso Cuarón was the best thing that happened to the franchise…he allowed it to grow up. Two years later, Cuarón released “Children Of Men,” which garnered him two Oscar® nominations for Editing and Adapted Screenplay. The film was praised for its art direction and harrowing look at our world thrown into chaos when women can no longer give birth. It showed how savage humans can become when they are struggling to prevent their own extinction.
As with his previous films, Alfonso Cuarón takes on multiple roles on “Gravity,” acting as Director, Producer, Co-Editor and Co-Writer. He shares the writing credits with his eldest son, Jonás Cuarón. He reunited with many of his previous collaborators, and worked with some new ones as well. These include five-time Oscar® nominated director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (“Children Of Men”); editor Mark Sanger (“Children Of Men”); producer David Heyman and costume designer Jany Temime (“Harry Potter” films); production designer Andy Nicholson (“Alice In Wonderland”); Oscar® nominated visual effects supervisor Tim Webber (“The Dark Knight”); and lastly, composer Steven Price (“The World’s End”). This extremely talented group of people set out to create a movie unlike anything ever seen before.
From the opening credits, all the way to the final moments, “Gravity” is expertly crafted on every level. Cuarón clearly tried to make this feel as real as possible, presenting several moments from a first-person perspective inside the space suit. The opening scene feels like a documentary, stretching 17 minutes, all done as one continuous shot. And the use of 3D technology to capture thousands of pieces of floating debris, both out in space and inside the Explorer wreckage and International Space Station, puts the viewer directly in the action. And the way in which the films perfectly balances a lack of sound with an abundance of heavy score makes the tension even higher. I not only expect this movie to receive a multitude of award nominations (including Best Picture), I absolutely believe it will win.
“Gravity” is a blockbuster in every sense of the word. One that immediately grabs you and never lets go. One that has you holding your breath and gripping your seat. Sometimes you honestly forget that you are watching a movie and not a NASA documentary. That is how accurately outer space is recreated, complete with stunning imagery of Earth in the background. And this amazing technology gives the audience several different viewing options. Whatever you do, do not miss this film in 3D. If you want the biggest image around, of course opt for IMAX® 3D. But if you want a completely immersive experience, find a theater that is presenting the film with Dolby ATMOS™. This is without a doubt the best sound system I have ever heard. While IMAX® does an excellent job of surrounding you with massive images and earth-shattering sound, Dolby ATMOS™ utilizes an entirely new sound design, with speakers located above and around the audience. It is the best possible way I can recommend watching “Gravity.” This movie earns my HIGHEST recommendation.

"Anything Goes" Cruises through Classic Theater with huge Success
Anything Goes is a fun romp through all the classic musical tropes with mistaken identities, goofy antics, and awesome songs. It’s no surprise that this production won the Tony Award for Best Revival in 2011.
Featuring the music and lyrics of Cole Porter, most people nowadays may likely only be familiar with the titular song… and likely due to its prominence in the opening act of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Other songs may be known to a more seasoned mind (“It’s De-lovely” & “Friendship”). Yet every song is a classic and is performed fantastically by the ensemble cast. I found myself to be unwittingly smiling after several numbers due to the impressive staging, performances, and music.
Anything Goes follows the story of Reno Sweeney (played by Rachel York), a nightclub singer, and her friend/crush, Billy Crocker (played by Josh Franklin) as they board the S.S. American with different goals in mind. Just before the boat departs, Billy runs into the girl he fell in love with just 3 weeks past and decides in a minute to stowaway… with some help from gangsters on the run. When Billy finds out that the girl he loves, Hope Harcourt (played by Alex Finke), is engaged to a Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (played by Edward Staudenmayer), he, Reno, and his newfound gangster friends band together to try and break up the marriage!
While I enjoyed the first act’s numbers greatly, but I didn’t notice the smile on my face until that act’s finale (“Anything Goes”). The incredible tap dancing choreography (done by Kathleen Marshall who also directed) couple with the amazing singing of Rachel York wowed me. The ensemble all came out and tap danced in unison and was a sight to behold. It didn’t quite top the opening to Indiana Jones but it came close!
Two other numbers were memorable, but for different reasons. “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” is a great evangelical number that showcases Ms. York’s talents, as well as those of the ensemble. I couldn’t help but smile and applaud at their energetic and fun performance of that song. Finally, “All Through the Night” stuck out to me for the great singing by Mr. Franklin and Ms. Finke, as well as the set. While the set normally reflected the S.S. American’s deck, this particular scene features their moving cabin sets as well as an incredibly evening scene, as the young lovers sing about their dilemma. The sight of Billy in the brig under the deck, while Hope sings on deck, staring at the stars, is incredible.
I also want to point out the role of Erma, the gangster’s moll, who happens to play the man-crazy comic relief. She only has one song to herself (“Buddie, Beware”), but she sings it well and provides a great deal of laughs with her performance throughout!
The set is simple, amazing, and dynamic at the same time. Ship cabins will roll in and out as needed, portholes will light up with various colors to match the mood of the song, and you’ll be surprised at how well they handle changing the deck of the ship to a nightclub.
It should also be noted that Segerstrom Center for the Arts also has its own performance premiering with this show! Stage & Screen is a new exhibit that will be updated throughout this season to provide background information, videos, and memorabilia pertaining to the shows. For Anything Goes, I noticed a nice overview of the history of Anything Goes, showcasing the various productions and movies and providing little tidbits of knowledge (like how Ethel Merman allegedly did not get along with Frank Sinatra during the filming of the 1954 television production and refused to work with him again!)
The second feature was “You’re The Tap” demo lessons before the show in the lobby. This interactive show has a tap dance artist, Ashley Rentfro, guide the audience through a sample tap dance lesson. I watched for a few minutes and noticed that the participants were having a good time and those gathered around were enjoying the event.
If you are looking for a feel-good show that covers a lot of classic songs, Anything Goes is a good choice. Grab your tickets and catch Anything Goes at Segerstrom Center for the Arts from September 24th to September 29th!

Universal "Halloween Horror Nights" makes this year's Experience Unique
I’ve gone to the last few years of Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, and I was really beginning to worry that there was nothing left they could do to enhance the experience. There’s only so many creature-filled depictions of gore and terror you can see before a feeling of deja vu starts to set in. And yet, somehow, they have once again exceeded expectations and made it feel all new again. It really did feel like each step was into the unknown, and while there are certain unavoidable patterns, the feelings of walking the fog-filled streets and the atmosphere they have created has evolved in such a way to make this year’s experience uniquely it’s own.
First and foremost, the most exciting change came about as a result of the forthcoming Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Now that preparations are officially underway to bring the hit Orlando attraction to Hollywood, maze space is limited in the upper lot. As a result, they have finally done what I’ve been dying to experience for years now. The past several years has had what they call “The Terror Tram,” where the guests are able to walk certain areas of the backlot that have been redressed to the particular theme of that year. However, it’s all outdoors, and the soundstages are completely off limits. This year, “The Terror Tram” is still there, but in addition, there is a different tram that you can take directly to New York street, where you work your way into one of two mazes that are actually constructed in soundstages. After walking through an apocalyptic Hell overrun by “walkers” from AMC’s horror masterpiece, The Walking Dead, you find yourself at a crossroads. You can either go through a maze entitled “The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven,” or a 3D maze inspired by the lyrics from the history of legendary Metal band, Black Sabbath.
Both mazes are terrifically scary, with the Walking Dead taking you through some of the greatest moments of the show. Your tour takes you through the prison, the town of Woodbury, etc. This is your opportunity to come face to face with Walkers in faithful recreations from not only the locations from the show, but specific set pieces. Whether it’s the epic scale of the helicopter crash, or the intimacy of the Governor’s torment involving his daughter, this is a maze that really gets under your skin. The purposes of these mazes aren’t just to scare you through shock effects. Universal has perfected the art of transporting the guests into another world, making you feel as if you are in the actual locations being depicted, and creating a sense of dread beyond simply jumping out at you.
As for Black Sabbath, I was completely blown away by the use of 3D in this maze. I tend to find 3D mazes distracting, but in this case, the 3D actually becomes a part of the experience rather than a simple gimmick. They have utilized the 3D to create an unsettling space in which you never feel completely secure with your surroundings. I’m not completely familiar with Black Sabbath, so the specifics of the maze felt a little disjointed. However, the audacity of the performers in conjunction with the tone set through the music and set design made this another standout experience.
Another highlight of the night was the maze for “Insidious: Into the Further.” I loved the first movie and haven’t yet seen the sequel. However, your familiarity with the source material isn’t really relevant to the fact that this is a fantastic maze. Great set pieces combined with some of the most dedicated performers of the night made this a standout. The actors gave it their all in this one, not only having perfected the art of timing the perfect scare, but the artistry of scaring without doing much at all. Some of the creature movements felt like a cursed ballet, with the fluidity of the motions proving scarier than any sudden jolt ever could.
Don’t get me wrong, not all of the mazes are perfect. I was relatively underwhelmed with the maze based on the new Evil Dead film, finding that to be simple recreation. I was also confused by “El Cucuy: The Boogeyman,” a maze supposedly based on a “mythical, shape-shifting monster.” I am not familiar with the legend, and the majority of the narration was in Spanish, so I just found myself confused throughout.
Universal Horror Nights are more than just mazes however. The rides are all open, including the fantastic new Transformers ride. There’s also the infamous “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure,” a recurring show every year that skewers the year in pop culture through extremely risqué comedy and music. This year’s show had some of the best production numbers I’ve ever seen, especially a sequence themed to Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby. Unfortunately, the script itself was slightly subpar, with many of the jokes feeling forced and the narrative unusually thin. Of course, you don’t go this show for the story. While not my favorite year for Bill and Ted, it was still a great show and definitely worth checking out.
Worth noting as well is the Scare Zones. Walking from maze to maze is an experience in and of itself thanks to these locations. Featuring areas based on the recent film The Purge, and areas themed to clowns, scarecrows, etc., these are great locations to let yourself just get scared. This is where the creatures really get to spend a lot of time directly interacting with the guests. They put some great performers in these areas, and they are fantastic at making you truly uncomfortable.
Overall, Universal has pulled off another successful year. Production design is top-of-the-line as always, and they are masters at creating an atmosphere of fear. I had a great time, and highly recommend this event to anybody with the guts to let themselves be truly scared.

Disney's Live Action "Cinderella" Begins Production. Coming to Theaters March 13, 2015!
Walt Disney Pictures announced that principal photography has begun at Pinewood Studios in London, on “Cinderella,” Disney’s first-ever live action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale.
Directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Jack Ryan,” “Thor”), the film stars Lily James (“Downton Abbey,” “Wrath of the Titans”) in the title role, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) as the Prince, Oscar®-winner Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) as the infamous stepmother Lady Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”) as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday Grainger (“Great Expectations,” “Anna Karenina”) and Sophie McShera (“Downton Abbey,” “Waterloo Road”) play Ella’s stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella, respectively. Stellan Skarsgård (“The Avengers,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “The Grey”) play the Arch Grand Duke and the Prince’s loyal friend, the Captain. Tony® Award-winner Derek Jacobi portrays the King.
“Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Jack Ryan”), from a screenplay by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).
The filmmaking team includes three-time Academy Award-winning production designer Dante Ferretti (“The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (“The Aviator,” “The Young Victoria,” “Shakespeare in Love”), director of photography Haris Zambarloukos (“Sleuth,” “Thor”) and Academy Award-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Clash of the Titans”).
The timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.
Director Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”
The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.
Production on “Cinderella” will take place at Pinewood Studios and locations throughout England.
“Cinderella” will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 13, 2015.
