Theatre Review: ‘Dracula’ Draws Fresh Blood in Westminster

Westminster

Westminster Community Playhouse swoops in and takes a bite into the timeless classic vampire lore in “Dracula”. Directed by Brandon Ferruccio. Adapted into a stage play by Niel Labute with a twisted modern flare. Projecting feminism outlooks, particularly around the characters of Mina Murray and Dr. Van Helsing. Opening new grounds for character development as Jonathan Harker pushes back to hold on to old conservative ways.

With the various scene changes in the alternate past times of Romania and England, the stage is mostly painted a dark black around a coffin-shaped doorway. Minimal decoration of a mirror frame, writing table, window curtain, and cell bars add enough touch to the imagination to set the scenes. Steampunk aesthetics and goth-style costume designs set up a familiar yet new fantastical territory for the audience to embrace. The familiar original novel by Bram Stoker and its black and white film versions gets a new live stage adaptation that challenges the audience and unveils “Dracula” in new darkness.

CHOC

A vocally menacing and devilishly handsome Dracula (Steven Vogel) calls upon realtor turned slave Renfield (Jose Orozco) to his castle in Transylvania to arrange purchasing property in England. Dracula makes clear to the sensual Vixen (Ashley Stewart, also playing the Maid) that he has plans for Renfield as his unwilling servant. Before descending into a mindless downward spiral, Renfield corresponds by letters to friends back home in England.

CHOC

Strong-willed and minded Mina Murray (Caitlin Zinn) foresees a different living for women. Mina is in relations with the dashing Johnathan Harker (Dylan Ginez) whose conservative head remains dismissive of fantastical ways. Mina falls further into a sickly state and dark desires for Count Dracula reminiscent of her departed friend, Lucy. Dreamy Lucy Westerna (Gabriel Myers Prunty) is an innocent free spirit whose life is cut short and doomed to ravage the living. Lucy is in relation with the well-educated gentleman Dr. Arthur Seward (Bryan Edelmann).

CHOC

Dr. Seward runs an asylum at his lofty estate. The group gets a fortunate visit from the highly-regarded Dr. Van Helsing (Candy Beck). Johnathan Harker makes clear that his conception of Dr. Van Helsing as a woman is to be perceived as an unfathomable outline. The good doctor performs deeds as a truly brave and bold vigilante should.  Going so far as to barely resist the mind control of Dracula whose supernatural abilities overpower mortal victims.

Ervin Bolisay plays the Attendant and Captain, respectfully. If the prospect of paying respects to the vampire lore wasn’t enough to sink your teeth into, the conclusion of the play will not be what you would expect. Another twist to the ending will have the audience contemplate what could be next afterward.

CHOC

Westminster Community Playhouse continues to lay new ground for a versatile platform to showcase enduring sophisticated talent from clever casting, memorable performers, and strong direction. “Dracula” takes another stab at Westminster Community Playhouse on November 17 at 8 pm, 18 at 8 pm, and 19 at 2 pm, 2023 before laying to final rest after the weekend’s performance. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Press Conference: “Wish”

Walt Disney Animation

On November 22, Walt Disney Animation Studios will release its 62nd feature film, Wish. Set in the idyllic kingdom of Rosas, where wishes literally come true, Wish tells the story of Asha–a young girl who wants nothing more than to help the handsome and charismatic ruler Magnifico make people happy by granting their wishes. Unfortunately, she quickly learns that neither Magnifico nor her wishes are exactly as she envisioned. She must then decide what to do with that knowledge, aided by her friends, a talking goat, and a star.

“So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this.”
–Asha

A press conference at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank was held on Friday, Nov 10, 2023, and in attendance were Jennifer Lee (Writer/Executive Producer and animation Chief Creative Officer,) Chris Buck (Director,) Fawn Veerasunthorn (Director,) Peter Del Vecho (Producer,) Julia Michaels (songwriter,) and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (Producer) to talk about the creative process, the challenges faced, and the inspiration behind the film’s music, animation, and storytelling.

WISH Press conference with Jennifer Lee (Writer/Executive Producer & Animation Chief Creative Officer,) Chris Buck (Director,) Fawn Veerasunthorn (Director,) Peter Del Vecho (Producer,) Julia Michaels (songwriter,) and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (Producer)

Evolution of the Film:

One question raised during the press conference focused on the evolution of the film, particularly the changes in sequences from the initial reels to the final product. The speakers emphasized the importance of understanding Magnifico’s journey and how modern audiences crave a deeper exploration of characters. The later decision to focus more on Magnifico and open the movie with him allowed viewers to connect with him on a personal level and understand the choices he makes throughout the film.

Lee:  “We said let’s let you see him at his best so you can take the entire journey with him.”

SORCERER KING – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” King Magnifico has the magical ability to grant wishes. But when 17-year-old Asha is compelled to challenge the powerful sorcerer, Magnifico becomes a forbidden resource. Featuring the voices of Chris Pine as King Magnifico and Academy Award®-winning actress Ariana DeBose as Asha, the epic animated musical “Wish” hits the big screen on Nov. 22, 2023. © 2023 Disney. The Role of Music:

A significant portion of the discussion revolved around the film’s music, particularly Julia Michaels’ role as the songwriter. Michaels shared her experience of growing up with Disney films and the honor of contributing to the legacy of Disney music. The collaborative process of creating music with the team was highlighted, emphasizing the balance between embracing Disney’s musical tradition and infusing contemporary elements into the soundtrack.

Inspiration and References:

The press conference touched upon the numerous references to older Disney movies throughout Wish. The speakers explained that the goal is always to create an original story, but after that was set in place, the team couldn’t resist incorporating nods (over 100!) to classic Disney films. These references became a collective love letter to Disney’s 100 years of rich history, paying homage to the characters and stories that inspired generations.

CHOC
VERY VALENTINO – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” Asha’s pajama-wearing goat Valentino follows her wherever she goes. Adorable and wise, Valentino could teach humans a thing or two about perseverance. And when his wish to speak comes true—everyone is surprised, especially Valentino. Featuring Alan Tudyk as the voice of Valentino, the epic animated musical opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023. © 2023 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Representation and Character Design:

The design of the character Asha sparked interest, particularly her hair, which was inspired by both her Southern European and North African heritage. The team highlighted the importance of representation in the film and the collaboration with an expert to ensure cultural authenticity in Asha’s character design.

Generational Collaboration:

Directors Buck and Veerasunthorn, coming from different generations, discussed their creative collaboration and how handing down the baton of knowledge to upcoming animators has been a long tradition at Disney. They emphasized the importance of the storytelling and animation techniques passed down from the “9 Old Men” to the new generation.

Buck:  “It wasn’t just how we did the animation, classic Disney animation, but it was also…they were handing down Walt’s storytelling. Walt’s passion for animation and telling stories with joy, magic, and hope.”

ASHA’S PLIGHT – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic musical “Wish,” Asha (voice of Ariana DeBose) and her pajama-wearing pet goat, Valentino (voice of Alan Tudyk), live in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where wishes really do come true. But when Asha discovers a devastating truth about everyone’s wishes, she turns to the sky. Her wish is so powerful, it’s answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Helmed by Oscar®-winning director Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, “Wish” opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023. © 2023 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Empowering Messages:

The film’s overarching message of empowerment and self-discovery, as highlighted in the song “I’m a Star,” resonated deeply with the creators. The press conference revealed that the concept of stars symbolizing interconnectedness and the ability to make one’s wishes come true was a guiding theme from the early stages of development.

Lee:  “It’s that your wish is yours to fulfill, and that journey is important. And it was why wishing for us was fresh in this film because it wasn’t just ‘wish upon a star and maybe great things happen,’ it’s ‘wish and make it happen.’

“Someone asked how is it possible that Star could hear her and come. Because we’re all connected. We’re all made of Stardust. We’re all the same. We’re even all made of the same minerals…that’s the nerd in me.”

Explora Journeys’ Explora I Has Set Sail: Why People Are Flocking to This New Luxury Cruise Line

Explora
Credit: @pazzoperilmare on Instagram

New luxury cruise line Explora Journeys made waves in the cruise and travel industry after its first ship—the Explora I—set sail on her maiden voyage from Copenhagen to Reykjavik in August 2023. Initially revealed by MSC Group in 2021, the Explora I is the first ship of the fleet to begin operation this year, with more cruises launching in the succeeding years.

However, Explora Journeys isn’t the shipping giant’s first venture into the industry. It’s also responsible for MSC Cruises, a popular European cruise line undergoing expansion.

MSC Group’s new luxury cruise line offers a whole new experience compared to its existing fleet, boasting a promise of a premium ocean getaway. A major aspect of the Explora Journeys experience is that it’s beyond a typical luxury cruise; it’s an ocean journey that inspires you to travel further, immerse deeper, and linger a little longer. Unique destinations and tours, an invigorating onboard experience, and a wide variety of benefits have enhanced its appeal to travelers.

Destination experiences

A significant perk of cruise travel is visiting and exploring multiple destinations in one trip, making the travel experience more varied and exciting. The Explora I is set to offer tours to locations in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and across the Arabian Peninsula starting in 2024. Travelers can marvel at ancient wonders and immerse themselves in rich cultures.

From the golden sands of the Greek islands of Patmos and Corfu, to the sacred sites of Petra and Luxor, passengers on the Explora I can enjoy a unique and diverse itinerary however they choose. After the Explora I, the Explora II is to set sail in 2024, bringing guests to the lively reefs of the Caribbean and the sun-soaked Central America.

Life onboard

Apart from the varied tours, Explora Journeys prides itself on an enriching onboard experience. A feature from Financial Review on the Explora I highlights that the ship’s world-class cuisine and wine, the premium onboard shopping offerings, and the soothing spa and wellness services at sea all aim to ensure guests reach the “ocean state of mind.” This entails that passengers can connect to their surroundings, others, and even their inner selves as they travel by sea. Even the suites have been designed with luxury, complete with a bedroom, living room, a walk-in closet, and a terrace for private outdoor lounging.

Enrichment programs

Other than the essential cruise amenities and provisions, onboard enrichment is also a major part of the luxury cruise experience on the Explora I. One example is talks given by experts on certain topics, such as a short lecture on the work of artisanal accessories and bag designer Stefano Conticelli in The Journey Shop.

Passengers can listen and learn something new onboard while pursuing luxury products from high-end brands. Guests can also listen to talks by baristas about the origins of coffee varietals or discussions from artists about their creative process and works. These enrichment programs allow for a unique learning experience and environment, keeping life onboard continuously exciting and intriguing.

The Explora Journeys luxury cruise line has only launched recently but has already been receiving glowing reviews from passengers and the press, such as Travel + Leisure, Business Insider, AFAR Media, and more. As the brand and fleet continue to grow, it’s likely that more and more people will be willing to invest in the experience the ship offers for their next trip. There’s much in store for Explora Journeys as it begins its first full year of operation in 2024, and hopefully, it will be able to maintain the momentum it has gained.

Apple TV limited series “Masters of the Air” teaser trailer

Apple TV

Apple TV+ has unveiled the first teaser for its highly anticipated, nine-episode limited series, “Masters of the Air,” hailing from executive producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and written by John Orloff. Starring a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa, “Masters of the Air” will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, January 26, 2024 with the first two episodes, followed by one new episode every Friday through March 15, 2024.

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.

Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

“Masters of the Air” is enormous in both scale and scope and depicts a unique and crucial time in world history. A genuine cinematic achievement, the series shot on locations ranging from the bucolic fields and villages of southeast England to the harsh deprivations of a German prisoner-of-war camp.

Hailing from Apple Studios, “Masters of the Air” is executive produced by Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Hanks and Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

Apple TV+ offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all your favorite screens. After its launch on November 1, 2019, Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut.

To date, Apple Original films, documentaries, and series have been honored with 392 wins and 1,631 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy “Ted Lasso” and historic Oscar Best Picture winner “CODA.”

Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” Teaser Trailer Released

Inside Out

The little voices inside Riley’s head know her inside and out—but next summer, everything changes when Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” introduces a new Emotion: Anxiety. According to director Kelsey Mann, the new character promises to stir things up within headquarters.

“Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat,” said Mann. “That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.” A trailer, poster and film stills are now available for what promises to be the feel-good (or feel-everything) film of Summer 2024.

CHOC

Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up.

And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, “Inside Out 2” releases only in theaters in Summer 2024.

Cultural celebrations in Disney California Adventure Park with Disney Festival of Holidays

Disney Festival of Holidays in Disney California Adventure Park draws inspiration from the diverse dishes and cherished traditions of Christmas, Navidad, Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Three Kings Day. Offering a feast for the senses, guests can expect to sample new and returning food and beverages such as southern mac and cheese and a beef brisket slider, accompanied by upbeat music at the Palisades Stage, Sonoma Terrace, and for the first time, the Hollywood Backlot, where Disney Festival of Holidays will also be celebrated.

Festivalgoers may purchase a Sip and Savor Pass, which offers eight entitlement tabs that can be shared among friends and family. Valid for the entirety of the Disney Festival of Holidays, foodies may redeem their tabs for select food and nonalcoholic beverages from several marketplaces and select dining locations in Disney California Adventure.

CHOC

Disney ¡Viva Navidad! will return to Paradise Gardens Park for its tenth season, and this year, guests will be able to taste their way through an all-new menu at Paradise Garden Grill. The Three Caballeros will host a joyous street party, featuring Mexican folklórico dancers and mariachis, Brazilian samba dancers and percussionists, giant mojiganga puppets, and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in their holiday best. Additional festivities will include live music and dancing, visits with beloved Disney characters, and special appearances by Mirabel from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto.”

CHOC

Festive décor throughout Disneyland Resort

Décor will make the season bright throughout Disneyland Resort, featuring grand Christmas trees decorated with uniquely themed ornaments in both theme parks, the Downtown Disney District, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disneyland Hotel. Icicles and snow-capped turrets will adorn Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle, and at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, a festive gingerbread house will inspire amateur gingerbread architects with its intricate design. With a bit of Disney magic, “snow” is scheduled to fall every night in select areas of Disneyland Park.

CHOC

Ornaments, lights, and more will also embellish beloved attractions. In Disneyland, a merry boat ride on the wintry waterway of “it’s a small world” Holiday will serenade guests with choruses of jolly tunes. In New Orleans Square, Jack Skellington from “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” redecorates the Haunted Mansion into the very festive Haunted Mansion Holiday, complete with a hauntingly delightful gingerbread house. Guests can gear up for some cheer in Disney California Adventure on Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree, which will both undergo seasonal spins for the “haul-idays.”

Seasonal spectaculars and entertainment

Mickey Mouse and some of his friends will don all-new outfits in Disneyland, putting a spin on the classic red and green with midcentury modern-inspired looks. Through Dec. 24, Santa Claus will pose for jolly family photos, making stops in Critter Country in Disneyland, Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in Disney California Adventure, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disneyland Hotel.

CHOC

“A Christmas Fantasy Parade” will spread holiday cheer in Disneyland Park, starring characters from Disney Animation’s “Frozen,” Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story” and more. The “Believe…In Holiday Magic” nighttime spectacular will illuminate the night sky over Disneyland Park with breathtaking fireworks and sprinklings of snow. For guests who want to add even more holiday magic to their trip, the Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort Guided Tour will offer a hosted experience of select seasonal offerings and reserved viewing for “A Christmas Fantasy Parade.”

CHOC

Multiple times per day, Disney and Pixar characters will march to the festive beat of the Holiday Toy Drummers in “Mickey’s Happy Holidays” in Disney California Adventure. The spirit of togetherness and love will fill Paradise Bay as hundreds of fountains illustrate warm moments from Disney animated films in “World of Color – Season of Light” nighttime spectacular.

For more information or to book a Disneyland Resort Vacation Package, fill out this QUOTE FORM and a Travel agent will get in touch with you soon for a FREE QUOTE.

In addition to holiday shopping and dining in the Downtown Disney District, guests can groove to various “mistle-toe-tapping” live musical performances on select evenings at the Downtown Disney LIVE! stage. On some nights at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disneyland Hotel, live entertainment will create a wonderfully cozy atmosphere.

Boo at the Zoo, is the annual Los Angeles Zoo tradition that brings out families from around the region. We got a chance to take in the sights, do some trick-or-treating, and of course, visit all the beloved animals who call the Zoo home.

The Los Angeles Zoo isn’t as famous or broad as her famous sister in San Diego, but it holds its own with a large, meandering park filled with beautiful animals. Its setting in Griffith Park can’t be beat, and you can spend hours following winding paths through dense foliage to discover animal after animal.

But Boo at the Zoo adds even more fun! Here’s what you’ll get to do at no extra cost while visiting the Zoo this weekend:

TRICK-OR-TREATING (10 AM – 3 PM)

We had low expectations for this but wow were we pleasantly surprised. Mars is the official sponsor of the three candy locations, and they were not shy about piling great candy into every kid’s (and grownup’s) bags! The Zoo warns that free bags aren’t available, but on the date of our visit LA Care Health Plan had booths near every candy station to distribute free reusable bags, suitable for trick-or-treating.

We walked away with loads of great, brand-name candy, and it was free! Our daughter loved getting some extra trick-or-treating in, and costumes are encouraged.

EXTINCT ANIMAL GRAVEYARD

Near the first trick-or-treat station is a kind of morbid display of tombstones showcasing extinct animal species. It was really interesting to look through, and of course, part of the Zoo’s mission is to keep that list from getting any longer!

SPOOKY STORY TIME

At Treetop Terrace, next to the beautiful carousel, there are a couple of “spooky” story readings for kids each day. Check the schedule when you arrive!

Some really fun photo ops were set up in various locations around the park too!

We weren’t able to catch everything going on for Boo at the Zoo, but there are scheduled animal feedings with “seasonal treats,” science demos from NASA/JPL, and more! We can’t recommend Boo at the Zoo enough for your Halloween weekend plans. See you at the Zoo!
