Four Men and One Woman Outbuild 13 Hopefuls to Become Newest Model Builders at LEGOLAND® California

Eighteen job hunters competed for the ultimate dream job at LEGOLAND® California today and five walked away with offers to work as Model Builders at the family theme park in Carlsbad. Joel Baker (23) of Seattle, Washington; Brian Heins (35) of San Diego, California; Amanda Jouan (26) of Chula Vista, California; Mark Larson (32) of Chicago, Illinois; and Ryan Wood (25) of Los Angeles, California out built other hopeful contenders to be the newest members of the LEGOLAND Model Shop Team.

The Model Builder Search began with 150 people submitting applications online. More than 25 were selected to compete in the first round of competition on June 25 in which qualified candidates were asked to complete three challenges: a copy build, where applicants had to copy an existing LEGO® model; a team build, where applicants were challenged to build something together; and a creative build where each applicant built a model within just one hour, testing their creativity and time management skills.

The search culminated with today’s final build-off where Park guests watched in anticipation as the finalists had just two hours to build an impressive 3D model based on the Park’s newest area, Land of Adventure. They were judged on their creativity, strategy, ability to build a three-dimensional model and their calmness under pressure.  After today’s competition, all of the finalists got the chance to slide down Dune Raiders, the Park’s newest ride before it opens to the public June 26, 2009. The winners’ models will be installed in Dune Raiders to be seen by Park guests all summer long.

Dune Raiders features six side-by-side nearly 50-foot-long racing lanes and a pair of double-helix corkscrews that are more than 15 feet high. The fifth attraction within Land of Adventure, Dune Raiders is themed in an Egyptian bazaar motif complete with a new gaming area called Thunder’s Quest and new LEGO models including a snake charmer with animated snakes.

Baker, Heins, Jouan, Larson and Wood will not only help with projects within LEGOLAND California such as Dune Raiders, but will help build the thousands of LEGO models going on display in other Merlin Entertainments properties such as LEGOLAND Malaysia, LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Shaumburg, LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Xanadu and LEGOLAND Dubailand as well.

The Model Builders hired today will have 30 days in which to start their new job. There are a mere 24 Model Builders at all four LEGOLAND Parks. Ten of them currently work here at LEGOLAND California.  Coming from various backgrounds and skills, they all have two things in common: They use every ounce of creativity in their daily work, and they’re passionate about it.

With so many talented finalists, LEGOLAND California also offered entry level positions to four of the competitors. Bryan Decker of San Diego, Samuel Swiger of Carlsbad, Eric Christie of Hemet and Dana Bradsema of San Diego will be working on the Model Shop Team at LEGOLAND California as Model Shop Associates.

Movie Review: "Year One"

Columbia Pictures and Apatow Productions (founder Judd Apatow) should have thought about it very thoroughly to change the name to “Year None,” since the movie had nothing to provide to the audience, not one bit of satisfaction. The movie was disappointing to say the least. You have two main characters an awful hunter, Zed (Jack Black) and an awful gatherer, Oh (Michael Cera) who are smitten by two of the women in their tribe Maya (June Raphael) and Eema (Juno Temple). Zed wants to desperately impress Maya that he can be a useful man to the tribe, so he decides to eat a golden apple from the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil. Zed begins to believe that he is becoming a genius but the tribe finds out what he did, so he is forced to leave the tribe. He decides to start his own tribe and as he leaves to explore the other parts of earth he accidentally sets fire to Oh’s house forcing Oh to join his quest. During their exploration, Zed and Oh encounter many biblical people. The first are Cain and Abel, and they witness Cain killing Abel thus forcing Cain to flee with them on their quest. They encounter another civilization where they find out that Maya and Eema have been enslaved and they ploy a plot to release them.

The film had too much potty humor that was childish. It took away from the clever humor that these comic genus’s could have provided. The film had wasted talent riding on this film. Paul Rudd and Bill Hader, two brilliant comic actors, wasted their talents on their cameo parts. Bill hader as the shaman was probably the only one that outshined the entire cast, which is sad to say. The ending credits were probably the funniest part of the movie because you got the chance to see the bloopers where the actors were honest in their comedy. The person to blame was Harold Ramis for not having a well-written script and no sense of direction. Ramis’ actors were all over the place without any clear direction to go. In the Abel and Cain scene, Cain (David Cross) did not know what he was doing. Cross is an amazing comic actor, yet he did not have a clear intention in the scene. Cross was just simply trying too hard because he was focused on being funny than being honest. The difference is that being funny is trying to make unfunny jokes funny, which can be Inevitable. Honesty is the key to funny which is as simple as playing your intention with action. At times, Jack Black and Michael Cera had the same problems. The blame really falls on the horrible script that didn’t provide clear intentions. It basically went for the potty humor, which is a cheap shot of making comedy films. Films that do this type of humor is not challenging, it would be understanable if it was half potty and half clever, yet it did not provide that.

Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Isaac) have a common acting ground, they tend to play the same character in every movie. They are one-dimensional actors that have no level of range. It is working for Cera because he does have a unique type of humor. His improvisational skills are very strong and at times can be limitless. Cera does need to take an acting class, which would make him unstoppable. On the other hand, Christopher Mintz-Plasse definitely needs to take an acting class. He is becoming annoying and if he keeps this up his fifteen minutes of fame will be up. He does deserve some credit with Role Models because he did play a role a little different from his Mclovin role from Superbad. In Year One, it seems that he reprised the role of Mclovin, which did not surprisingly fit in this type of film.

The costumes and make-up in the film was very valued for a comedy. The production value was up to par. It should be up to par if you have a budget of 60 million dollars. The gold make-up on Cera was priceless. The amazing make-up on Bill Hader was also priceless. Bill hader was completely unrecognizable. His impressions in the ending credits were great; one in particular was Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood.” His impression alone helped the film get a rating of 5 out of 10. Here is some advice; Judd Apatow is a genus when it comes to directing comedies. Everything he touches becomes gold. He should have directed this one when he read the script because he could have possibly salvaged some things from the awful script. Never mind, when you have a bad script it is Inevitable.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC on Blu-ray and DVD!

SYNOPSIS
When fashionista Rebecca Bloomwood’s out-of-control spending reaches the outer limits of her credit cards, she is forced to find employment to pay for her label-icious wardrobe. Her dream job is a position at New York’s top fashion rag Alette, but she has to settle for a desk at Successful Saving, a struggling financial magazine owned by the same publishing company. With a dogged debt collector (Robert Stanton) hot on her stilettos, Becky becomes the unlikely author of a column on saving money—with a little help from her friends at Google. Her unconventional outlook on money matters attracts the approval of her dreamy boss, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), and Becky begins to think maybe there is a whole new world waiting for her just a few steps away from Madison Avenue.

A flat broke fashion junkie is hired to dispense monetary advice in the stylishly funny romantic comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic, coming to Blu-rayTM Hi-Def and DVD on June 23, 2009 from Touchstone Home Entertainment.  Legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure franchises) presents a lighthearted, feel-good romp based on Sophie Kinsella’s best selling novels about a fashion forward New Yorker who trades frocks for finance and finds fulfillment in the most unexpected place. Available in 1-disc DVD plus 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray editions that include Digital Copy, Confessions of a Shopaholic sports bonus features including bloopers, deleted scenes, and a music video.  The Blu-ray has even more bonus features, including a look behind the making of this season’s must-have accessory for anyone who loves to laugh.

Confessions of a Shopaholic’s strong ensemble cast includes Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Hugh Dancy (The Jane Austen Book Club), Krysten Ritter (What Happens in Vegas), Joan Cusack (Friends with Money), John Goodman (Speed Racer), John Lithgow (Dreamgirls) and Kristin Scott Thomas (The Other Boleyn Girl).  Directed by P. J. Hogan (My Best Friend’s Wedding) with a comic touch as light as the rarefied air of the fashion world, Confessions of a Shopaholic also features costumes by iconic designer Patricia Field (Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada) that give New York’s Fashion Week a run for its money.

The Blu-ray edition of Confessions of a Shopaholic may boast a fairly proficient DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track, but the film’s sound design is as uninspiring and uninvolving as you’d expect from a formulaic romantic comedy. Dialogue is bright and clear, prioritization leaves no line behind, and pans are silky smooth, but rear speaker activity is so maddeningly reserved that the mix fails to recreate the hustle and bustle of New York’s busy streets. LFE support is competent, but usually produces similar results: traffic lacks presence, effects lack weight, and movement lacks the heft provided by the best lossless tracks on the market. It isn’t overly distracting per se, but it does leave the soundscape malnourished from time to time. In all, this DTS-HD MA offering is often as thin and superficial as the film it accompanies. It won’t spoil the experience for anyone swept up in Rebecca’s world, but it certainly doesn’t break the romcom mold.

Disney has at least cobbled together a decent Blu-ray release. It doesn’t offer much in the way of supplemental material, but its attractive video transfer and passable DTS-HD Master Audio track should satisfy genre regulars looking for a solid AV presentation.

The Pink Panther 2 on DVD and Blu-ray!

Synopsis:
Steve Martin returns to the scene of the fun as the brilliant, bumbling Inspector
Jacques Clouseau in this side-splitting slapstick comedy for the whole family!  When legendary treasures from around the world are stolen, including the priceless Pink Panther diamond, Clouseau is assigned to a dream team of international detectives who are under pressure to bring the master thief to justice before he strikes again.  Co-starring Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, Andy Garcia, Lily Tomlin and John Cleese, The Pink Panther 2 will steal your heart…and keep you laughing!

Inspect the unexpected when five-time Golden Globe-nominee Steve Martin*  (Father of the Bride) springs back into action as the blundering French police officer, Inspector Jacques Clouseau, in the all-new The Pink Panther 2 available on Blu-ray Disc (BD) with Digital Copy June 23 from MGM Home Entertainment.  Co-starring Oscar-nominees John Cleese** (Rat Race) and Andy Garcia*** (Ocean’s Eleven), Yuki Matsuzaki (Letters From Iwo Jima), Emily Mortimer (Lars and the Real Girl) and Bollywood sensation Aishwarya Rai (The Mistress of Spices), The Pink Panther 2 is the side-splitting sequel to the worldwide hit The Pink Panther, based on the 1964 original starring the legendary Peter Sellers.  After a thief known as “The Tornado” allegedly steals a variety of precious items, including France’s beloved pink panther diamond, an “international dream team” of detectives band together to crack the case.  Slowing down the process is the team’s leader, Inspector Clouseau, the highly unintelligent officer who has a way of missing the obvious until he somehow stumbles onto the truth.

Packed with amusing adventure for the whole family, The Pink Panther 2 Blu-ray Disc includes a fun-filled three-disc version of the film with bonus disc featuring 27 Pink Panther cartoons and Digital Copy for portable media players.  Fully loaded with all-new bonus features including a gag reel, exclusive behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more.

For something called “The Pink Panther” about a jewel heist, you would expect the Blu-ray release to sparkle, but it doesn’t. The Pink Panther 2 looks rather dull in this 1.85:1 AVC/MPEG-4 high definition presentation from MGM.  It’s like contrast levels were set a bit too low. The picture is also a bit unstable and grain is a little jittery. Flesh tones are far more bronze than they should be at times, as well. The most exciting looking parts of this film, sadly, are the animated opening credits.

The first “Pink Panther” film starring Steve Martin was passable entertainment, but this sequel is a painful disaster as Cousteau bumbles through the film in unfunny ways. I had hoped Martin would have refined his portrayal of Jacques Cousteau for the second outing, but he regressed into a state of absurdity. The Blu-ray release contains less than a half an hour of bonus footage on the Blu-ray disc, but it is technically sound. The only reason I can come up with to purchase this title is for the three hours of vintage “Pink Panther” cartoons contained on one of the bonus DVDs of this three disc set.

Three-Disc Blu-ray Disc Specs:

STAY AND PLAY AT SEAWORLD DURING SUMMER NIGHTS

Rhythmic drum beats punctuate the night air.  Red, white and blue lights shine down from atop a 320-foot tower.  Laughter can be heard as silly sea lions and mischievous otters wreak havoc on stage.  Killer whales star in their own rock ’n’ roll concert featuring hot lights and cool tunes. Then, as the evening comes to a crescendo, fireworks light up the night sky over Mission Bay.   It’s all part of an annual tradition called Summer Nights at SeaWorld.

With so much to see and do, guests will want to stay late and play during Summer Nights at SeaWorld Presented by Pepsi.  The marine-life park’s summertime entertainment extravaganza gets under way weekends, May 23–June 7; and runs nightly, June 13–Aug. 30 and Sept. 5–7.  Here’s a look at the 2009 lineup (please note opening and closing dates for various shows):

New this year!
• “Sea Lions LIVE”:  SeaWorld newest sketch-based comedy show, “Sea Lions LIVE,” stars the park’s prankster-loving pinnipeds Clyde and Seamore.  During “Sea Lions LIVE,” Clyde and Seamore poke fun at popular TV shows such as “American Idol,” with their own rendition known as “Sea Lion Idol.”  One of the show’s highlights is “Dancing with the Pinnipeds” (a parody of “Dancing with the Stars”), during which Clyde and Seamore perform a sea lion swing to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and a flipper-tapping tango to “La Cupersita.”  “Sea Lions LIVE,” which debuted in April 2009, is presented during the day year round at SeaWorld; during Summer Nights, guests can enjoy the return of the nighttime seasonal show, “Sea Lions Tonite.”Summer Nights Favorites

• “Shamu Rocks”: The world-famous killer whale takes center stage during Summer Nights in this 20-minute musical journey that transports Shamu around the globe, through awesome natural settings.  Shamu’s visual experience is enhanced by images on four LED screens that move and rotate, dazzling the audience with a rockin’ show.

“Sea Lions Tonite”:  Summer Nights guests won’t want to miss “Sea Lions Tonite,” a hilarious adventure featuring famous California sea lions Clyde and Seamore.  The prankster-loving pinnipeds poke fun at the stars of classic daytime SeaWorld shows, including “Dolphin Discovery,” “Believe,” “Pets Rule!” and “Cirque de la Mer.”

•  “Ignight”:  SeaWorld’s energetic nighttime dolphin show “Ignight” lights up Dolphin Stadium, with bottlenose dolphins performing high-flyin’ behaviors, punctuated by rock ’n’ roll music, lighting effects and pyrotechnics.

•  “Riptide”:  Over at the main stage in the park’s entrance plaza, amazing hip-hop dancers, gymnasts, drummers and rhythmic artists entertain audiences with their incredible talents on a multi-level stage in this award-winning show.  The talented ensemble of 20 cast members combines artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, percussion and hip-hop dancing, all set to a soundtrack of rock, Latin, jazz and Broadway theater music.  “Riptide” opens June 13 and runs nightly through Aug. 30 and Sept. 5–7.

• Fireworks:  “Shamu’s SkySplash” fireworks take place every Summer Nights evening.  Note:  During the July 4th weekend, the park presents “Shamu’s SkySplash USA,” an extended display of fireworks set to patriotic music, July 3, 4 and 5.

• SeaWorld Skytower:  SeaWorld’s iconic 320-foot Skytower will be decked out in thousands of red, white and blue lights starting July 4 and continuing through Sept. 7.

Attractions, rides and more:
• In addition to the special summer shows and activities, nearly all of SeaWorld’s other attractions remain open every evening during Summer Nights, including Shipwreck Rapids, Journey To Atlantis, Wild Arctic, the Penguin Encounter and Sesame Street Bay of Play, a whimsical, two-acre play area for kids with three family-friendly rides and character meet and greets.

Summer Daytime Fun
• “Cirque de la Mer”:  Returning for its ninth summer, this acrobatic odyssey is performed on land, water and in the air at SeaWorld’s bayside lagoon venue, the Amphibitheater.  The popular summer daytime show features acrobats, hand balancers, aerialists, trapeze artists and comic performers.  “Cirque de la Mer” opens May 23 and closes Aug. 16.

• Daytime animal shows:  All of SeaWorld’s favorite year-round shows can be seen during the summer, including the magnificent “Believe” killer whale show, the hilarious “Sea Lions LIVE” and the always-adorable “Pets Rule!”

Universal Studios Tram Tour Returns to "Courthouse Square"

Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour trips around the famous “Courthouse Square” have returned after over a year of repairs. This historic film set was damaged after the devastating 4-acre fire that destroyed several major film locations and the King Kong section of the tour. The Courthouse Square section has been fully restored first with the rest expected to be finished by spring of next year. King Kong will return in 2010 with all new technology in a brand new facility being built in a different nearby location.

Courthouse Square is the world’s most-photographed town square as it is the site of a thousand movie and TV productions since the 1940’s. The area is best known as the main square from “Back to the Future” trilogy and is currently used for CBS’s hit series the Ghost Whisperer.

The sets are more detailed than before and have grown larger in order to create a more true representation of a town or city. Along with the revamped sets are newly refurbished trams that now feature flat screen TVs and state-of-the-art audio systems. There is still a lot to be completed at the sets in surrounding areas, but it is great to see Courthouse Square back in all its glory.

Take a look at the champagne christening, the USC Marching Band and restored area in our PHOTO GALLERY here.

Movie Review: "The Proposal"

I don’t think anyone seeing “The Proposal” won’t know how this one is going to end. The point is rather how the characters get to the conclusion that makes this a worthy film.

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are at their best, well comedic best, and the two are a perfect cast for this bickering duo. Reynolds is his normal sarcastic self and Bullock looks better than ever! There is everything you would expect from this romantic comedy including the incredibly cheesy lines, the over dramatic perfectly written love saving speeches, and the very touching sweet moments that people go out to see romantic comedies in the first place.

I am not the biggest fan of romantic comedies as in most cases they follow a strict structure and are most definitely predictable. “The Proposal” is no different than others in this genre. Saving this film from a mushy disaster is the laugh-out-loud comedy and great chemistry the film stars have with one another. This wonderfully casted, well written, beautiful film stays true to itself and keeps in mind that this is a fun summer chick-flick.

“The Proposal” starts when Margaret, the wicked queen of a big time New York book publisher (Sandra Bullock), is on the verge of losing her job and being deported back to Canada because she did not renew her visa. In order to save her career Margaret improvises and announces she is engaged to be wed with her executive assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds). The not expecting assistant finds himself faced with a hefty fine and jail time if the two are caught in fraud. Andrew however uses his bosses plan as leverage by bribing her to promise the editor position if he goes through with it. Margaret must visit Andrew’s family to make this marriage appear legit while at the same time she does not comprehend what a toll this will have on her, and possibly her heart.

The film’s main setting appears when the two arrive at Andrew’s home in a cute little dainty town in Alaska, (actually filmed on Massachusetts’s shore). Upon arriving Margaret is quick to figure that Andrew’s family is actually quite successful and a loving family, something unexpected and also obviously missing from her life. It is here that the two must lie to Andrew’s family to make their “business plan” a success. Not expecting to one another, Andrew’s mom has canceled Margaret and Andrew’s hotel plans and the two are now forced to sleep in the same room. Of course it’s the time spent together that makes this one of those “two people that weren’t meant to fall in love…” stories.

Andrew’s family is played by Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson as the parents and the magnificent golden girl Betty White as the blunt grandmother. The family does a fabulous job of portraying a loving family who only wants what’s best for their son. Margaret’s transformation begins with the family. Of course she winds up in outrageous situations that make her see things in another light. Some of these comical bits are extremely funny, but a few are just bizarre or just downright ridiculous.

In one circumstance Margaret runs into Andrew’s grandmother in the woods where she joins in with crazy spiritual chants to free her body, well I suppose that’s what they were doing. It is followed by Margaret chanting an old hip-hop song “Get Low” by Lil’ Jon and Bullock shaking her booty. I don’t see how this really fits her character at all. I understand that she is starting to open up, but it is quite hard to believe that she knows this song word for word due to the way her role is in the beginning of the film. Perhaps she had this secret side of her that no one knew about, but I don’t buy it.

By the time the two spent a few days together and ran into each other naked in another absurd yet funny scene, Sandra Bullock’s character quickly changes from an evil witch to a caring innocent young lady. She begins to express a little too much heart for such a little amount that has happened. I suppose there is only so much they can show while keeping the audience’s attention. It would have been great to see the two hit a larger climax before their character makes that turn.

For those men out their “forced” to see this movie with their girlfriends, I don’t believe you will be pulling your teeth out. I expect most to get a great laugh out this situational comedy and perhaps be quite pleased with how great Sandra Bullock looks. I’ve never been too attracted to her however there is a great scene for all those guys out there where Sandra Bullock practically shows it all if it wasn’t for a small mitt and forearms. I wasn’t let down. Stay clear if you don’t care for Ryan Reynolds humor, but if you have liked his sarcastic comedy dating back to “Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place”, then this is Ryan Reynolds gold. As for the ladies, you get Ryan Reynolds shirtless and sweaty that you all seem to love, which I am sure will become obligatory for his future films.

“The Proposal” isn’t your stand out movie of the year, but it is your feel good romantic comedy of the summer. I was on the verge to give this a fourth star, but after much assessment I must stick to three. Yes, this delivered everything we are promised from this genre. It executed the story and jokes well. I rooted for them the whole way. However, in the end there is no real purpose to the film. There is no heart or moral to the story. I didn’t feel that anyone felt this story had to be told. It sure made me laugh and entertained me, but what did I take away from it? Maybe this is not required out of a movie to be considered good. It will still be my light hearted comedy choice of the year.

Disney’s Blu-ray edition is admirable as well. Its striking video transfer, potent DTS-HD Master Audio track, and generous collection of special features will finally give fans an excuse to chuck out their well-worn DVD copies of the film. The Greatest Game Ever Played was directed by the multi-talented Bill Paxton (actor -Titanic, Twister, director – Frailty). It features a winningly charismatic lead performance by future Hollywood superstar Shia LaBeouf (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Transformers) in the role of amateur golfer Francis Ouimet, a working-class youth, who shocked the world by defeating golf pro Harry Vardon in the 1913 U.S. Open Championship. The Greatest Game Ever Played on Disney Blu-ray is the greatest way to
experience this classic tale of unexpected sports heroism!

Featuring a fantastic story wrapped up in a fine cinematic technical achievement, The Greatest Game Ever Played makes for one of the best films of its kind, a truly moving and heroic picture that manages to retain plenty of drama and emotion despite the foreknowledge of the story’s resolution. A rare picture that enjoys standout performances from every cast member and plenty of technical know-how behind the camera to take full advantage of the powerful story and fantastic acting, The Greatest Game Ever Played enthralls from beginning to end across the entire spectrum of cinematic delight. Disneyland Resort Announces Significant Renovation of Disneyland Hotel

Beginning in August 2009, Southern California’s landmark Disneyland Hotel will start a significant renovation project that will include major improvements to its guest rooms and considerable changes to the exterior of the hotel. The hotel will remain open during the renovation, which will be conducted in phases, and is scheduled to be completed in 2012.

“We are excited to embark on the largest and most extensive renovation of one of Disney’s classic hotels,” said Disneyland Resort President Ed Grier. “This renovation provides us with the opportunity to bring new magic to this historic hotel, which enables us to enhance the Disney experience that our guests have come to expect. “It also reinforces our ongoing commitment and investment in the Anaheim Resort District – working with the city and area businesses to continue to evolve the District into a world-class, multiday tourist destination,” added Grier.

Significant Guest Room Upgrades, New Room Amenities and Exterior Enhancements
Disneyland Hotel’s renovated guest rooms will feature an all-new contemporary look with exquisite Disney touches woven into the décor. A stunning new headboard that features an artistically carved representation of Disneyland Park’s famous Sleeping Beauty Castle will serve as the focal point in each guest room. The background on the headboard uses fiber optics to create a magical skyline with fireworks – bringing the immersive park experience into the room. Rooms also will feature black and white art that will take guests back in time, reinforcing the nostalgia and history of Walt’s first theme park.

When completed, guest rooms will boast new flat screen TVs, mini-refrigerators, coffeemakers, safes capable of holding laptop computers and new state-of-the-art telephone, cable and wireless Internet connections. Upgrades to plumbing, electrical and heating and air conditioning systems also are included in the project.

Disneyland Resort’s original hotel, built in 1955, also will experience a noteworthy change to its exterior.  All of the three towers will feature an updated look, with large windows that will give the outside a sleek, radiant blue tint. The windows will replace the current sliding doors and faux balcony railings and are specially designed to be energy efficient and to extensively filter outside noise.

“The new design for the hotel’s exterior will enhance the existing towers and compliment the Resort as a whole. The windows will feature a sky blue reflective glass that channels the feel of our bright California sky,” said Mike Montague, director of resort development for Walt Disney Imagineering.

The Disneyland Hotel is composed of three main structures – the Magic, Wonder and Dreams towers. Construction will take place in one vertical half of a tower at a time – leaving the rest of the tower open for guests. The Dreams tower will be the first to be renovated and is scheduled to be completed in June 2010.

Popular Choice for Convention Visitors
In addition to being a top choice for vacationing families, the Disneyland Hotel has long been a favorite for meeting and convention planners because of its prime location and size – and direct access to more than 136,000 square feet of convention space.  Anaheim hosts hundreds of groups each year and the renovation will help maintain the city’s premiere position as a meeting destination.

“We are thrilled with Disney’s plans to renovate the Disneyland Hotel,” said Charles W. Ahlers, president of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau.  “With the renovation of the hotel and the expansion of Disney’s Grand Californian, coupled with other new hotel developments that are coming to Anaheim over the next few years, our city will continue to be a premier destination for convention and meeting planners.”

Energy Efficient Enhancements
As with other construction and enhancements that are underway throughout the Disneyland Resort, the renovation will include energy efficient upgrades. The most notable feature will be the hotel’s new windows.  With their reflective capabilities and double-pane glass, the windows will change the look of the exterior of the hotel dramatically, while reducing energy consumption by keeping guest rooms at the desired temperature.

The use of occupancy sensors in guest rooms, low-flow toilets, energy efficient light bulbs and paint low in volatile organic compounds are just a few more of the ways that the hotel will offer guests a “green” lodging experience.

Renovation is Part of Larger Resort Expansion
The Disneyland Hotel renovation is a part of a larger expansion project underway throughout the Resort. Disney’s California Adventure Park is undergoing a multiyear expansion project that includes new experiences, attractions and night-time spectaculars, culminating in 2012 with the opening a brand new land – Cars Land.  The four-star Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is also undergoing an expansion, adding 200 hotel rooms and 50 two-bedroom villas that are part of the Disney Vacation Club, which will make its first West Coast debut when it opens in the fall of 2009.

Disneyland Resort Celebrates Summer Nightastic! With New Shows, Surprises in the Night Sky and Valuable Offers

Disneyland Resort glows like never before this summer with the exciting, after-dark entertainment of Summer Nightastic!: a new fireworks spectacular, “Magical,” starring Dumbo the flying elephant; Tinker Bell’s “pixie magic” in “Disney’s Electrical Parade”; sensational new characters and special effects in “Fantasmic!” – and more.

“This summer is all about new surprises at nighttime,” said Ed Grier, president of Disneyland Resort. “With the sparkling Summer Nightastic! entertainment and our valuable summer offers, Disneyland Resort will be the hottest spot in Southern California this summer for kids of all ages.”

To enjoy all the fun, guests will find special ticket offers and vacation packages at Disneyland.com, including the Summer Fun Pass for residents of Southern California and Northern Baja, and a “2 Nights Free” offer at Disneyland Resort hotels and Resort Good Neighbor hotels. The special hotel deal provides guests five days and nights of Disneyland fun, for the price of three.

Nighttime entertainment, always an exciting part of summer at Disneyland Resort, appears in a whole new light – bigger, bolder and brighter – during Summer Nightastic! Dumbo makes his debut in the sky above Sleeping Beauty Castle in the “Magical” fireworks spectacular and Tinker Bell leads the way in “Disney’s Electrical Parade.” New creatures will thrill guests in this summer’s “Fantasmic!” show, rockin’ bands and DJs heat up a great new dance club in Tomorrowland and the fairies of Pixie Hollow play under the lights for the first time. Later this summer, a new, 40-foot-tall dragon will breathe fire across the Rivers of America in “Fantasmic!”

Summer Nightastic! continues nightly through Sunday, Aug. 23, at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks. “Magical” fireworks continue through Labor Day weekend.

A BOLDER “FANTASMIC!”: Guests will enjoy new thrills at the popular “Fantasmic!” spectacular on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. Special effects in this new version of “Fantasmic!” create a spine-tingling adventure with Mickey the Sorcerer and famous Disney villains. Ursula the Sea Witch from “The Little Mermaid” introduces her pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, who slither into the show with surprising speed. Favorite Disney characters practically leap off the giant mist screens, thanks to cutting-edge video projection technology. And later this summer, the evil Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty” will transform into the fully animated, 40-foot-tall dragon.

AN EXPLODING CELEBRATION IN THE SKY: “Magical” is a new Disney fireworks spectacular created especially to celebrate Summer Nightastic! at Disneyland. The familiar image of Tinker Bell lights up the show, only this time she’s joined by a surprising Disney character, Dumbo the flying elephant, who dances across the night sky. Acclaimed puppeteer Michael Curry, whose credits include Olympic opening ceremonies and “The Lion King” on Broadway, has created a Dumbo with lifelike movements that are accentuated by the show’s marvelous melodies. Tink then waves her wand to awaken a fantastic array of Disney’s most magical characters: Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, and the Three Good Fairies from “Sleeping Beauty.”

NEW FLOATS BRING NEW MAGIC TO “DISNEY’S ELECTRICAL PARADE”: Everything about “Disney’s Electrical Parade” has a new glow as Tinker Bell leads the way, waving from the basket of a magical balloon aboard a new float that leads the parade. The parade’s beloved music and floats feature more electrifying audio, plus new lighting technologies that create a pixie-dust effect on all the floats. Snow White and Pinocchio return to the parade this summer, riding bright new versions of their classic floats.

AN EXCITING NEW DANCE CLUB ‘IGNITES THE NIGHT’ IN TOMORROWLAND: Tweens, teens and families will dance the night away at the TLT Dance Club, on Tomorrowland Terrace at Disneyland. Dazzling décor includes an illuminated DJ console where the TLT Dance Club DJ spins dance tunes guaranteed to keep Tomorrowland rockin’ all night. Live bands and DJs from the hottest Southern California radio stations will appear on selected nights throughout the summer. Plus, guests can text their favorite tunes to TLT Dance Club for the “Top 8@8” countdown.

PIXIE HOLLOW ENCHANTMENT: Tinker Bell and her friends have been welcoming guests into their Pixie Hollow home, tucked into the glen near the entrance to Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, since fall of 2008. This summer, for the first time, Pixie Hollow and the nearby pond come to life at night in iridescent light shows. Pixie dust cascades across the landscape and radiates into the pond. Even the water becomes enchanted as playful fountains spring to life, pop jets perform with whimsical precision and sparkling strobes shine throughout Pixie Hollow.

“WHAT WILL YOU CELEBRATE?”: Guests continue to mark their special occasions in all sorts of fun ways at Disneyland Resort, including the daily “Celebrate! A Street Party” along Main Street, U.S.A. The exhilarating spectacle of music, dance and guest participation includes an energetic cast of dancers and Disney characters. … For those special occasions that call for food and entertainment, Celebration Roundup and Barbecue in Frontierland at Disneyland offers a hearty ranch-style barbecue meal, traditional western music and appearances by Sheriff Woody, Jessie the Yodelin’ Cowgirl and Bullseye from “Toy Story.” … Aspiring young princesses and knights are getting the full fairy tale makeover treatment at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, located in the Sleeping Beauty Castle Courtyard.
