Twenty years after their show was canceled, the stars of the Galaxy Quest TV series reluctantly cling to their glory years by appearing at sci-fi conventions and electronic store openings. Lynda Raquel’s fifth grade John Muir Elementary School class from Stockton won first place in Disney’s Environmentality Challenge with an all-expense paid trip to Disneyland and will star in a parade down Main Street U.S.A. For the winning class project, which focused on the conservation of the Wood Duck, the students restored two vandalized nesting boxes for local Wood Ducks who suffer from a dwindling population in Stockton’s Lodi Lake area. To drive awareness, they created a web site and “duckumentary” about the cause which they screened in the community. Proceeds from the screening were donated to local wildlife agencies.
Beth Stevens, senior vice president of Environmental Affairs at The Walt Disney Company, Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Marge Kohler, Acting Deputy Regional Director U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and AG Kawamura, Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture honored the winning students at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. The celebration on Friday May 8, included:
A ceremony honoring the students
A parade down Main Street U.S.A
Q&A sessions with the students and environmental state and federal dignitaries
Already in its 15th year, DEC is an annual competition developed by The Walt Disney Company together with the California Department of Education, the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of California Environmental Education Interagency Network, the K-12 Alliance, and the CREEC Network. The educational program, which targets fifth graders in California, Florida, Hong Kong, and the Cayman Islands, encourages environmental stewardship by asking students to take an environmental pledge and complete a class project which targets a real-world environmental challenge in their community. From Nia Vardalos, writer and star of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” comes the uplifting comedy “My Life in Ruins.” Georgia (Nia Vardalos) has lost her kefi (Greek for “mojo”). Discouraged by her lack of direction in life, she works as a travel guide, leading a rag-tag group of tourists as she tries to show them the beauty of her native Greece while waiting to land her dream job. Opening their eyes to an exotic foreign land, she too begins to see things in new ways—finding her kefi and possibly love in the process.
The world was first introduced to Nia Vardalos in 2002 with her surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which she wrote and starred in. Vardalos’s infectious charm and love for her characters permeated throughout the film, making it one of the most endearing romantic comedies in recent memory. The film seemed like the perfect career vehicle to establish Vardalos as a mainstream Hollywood actress. Since then, instead of capitalizing on her newfound fame, she keeps going back to her calling card, the misunderstood Greek American. First, she unsuccessfully tried to turn My Big Fat Greek Wedding into a television show, My Big Fat Greek Life, and now has made My Life In Ruins, which is being marketed as “the My Big Fat Greek Wedding girl goes back to Greece.” I am starting to feel this girl is like one of those one hit wonder bands who keep remaking and remixing their only hit over and over again, how many different versions of the Macarena are really necessary? The same applies here.
My Life In Ruins is a contrived attempt at recapturing the success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and is met with some pretty inept results. Nia Vardalos’s character, Georgia, is a Greek American tour guide in Greece who is frustrated by the quality of her tourists. The film tries to find comedy in her tour group, but misses much more often than it hits. The story tries to incorporate every type of annoying tourist into one bus and the results are just as irritating as they would be in real life. The problem is the film doesn’t have the same affection for these characters’ quirks in the way My Big Fat Greek Wedding does. The organic connection, which brings that film together is completely missing in this jumbled second attempt. The same goes for the love story that develops between Vardalos’s tour guide character and her bus driver Poupi (yes his name is a poop joke) who can’t seem to find a spark. After such a great debut effort, this film falls to the wayside among the countless other romantic comedies without anything truly original to offer.
A haunted amusement park, a dog-napping operation and an ape man who disrupts a movie set are some of the zany predicaments the Mystery Inc. gang encounters on Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Vol. 2, available now on DVDfrom Warner Home Video (WHV). This second collection of classic Scooby-Doo cartoons features four episodes from the original.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! first made its debut during CBS’ Saturday morning lineup and became an instant hit. The series follows the adventures of Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, Velma and Scooby-Doo as they solve cases typically involving ghosts, monsters or other supernatural forces. Hi-jinks always ensue, with their investigations resulting in entertaining chase scenes mixed with catchy musical numbers and comedic antics. This hit program spawned several spin-off series, specials, consumer products and live action films.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!Vol. 2 features the following episodes:
Decoy for a Dognapper – When several top show dogs are stolen, including a pedigreed female dog Scooby falls for, the kids go after a $500 reward offered by one of the dogs’ owners — it is up to Scooby-Doo to be a decoy for the dognappers.
What the Hex Going On? – A friend invites the gang to spend the weekend at her family’s estate, the Kingston Mansion, but a ghost turns up and changes her Uncle Stewart into an old man.
Never Ape an Ape Man – Daphne’s Uncle Maxwell, a movie director, hires the entire gang as extras in his new film: The Ape Man of Forbidden Mountain. Although the film is shooting on-location, the set is soon closed when a real ape man shows up and wreaks havoc on the set.
Foul Play in Funland – The gang highly anticipates the opening of a new amusement park, but while clam-digging outside of it, the gang see the rides moving not only before the park is open, but with no passengers, as well. Drawn into another mystery, the gang sets out to see if the park is haunted.
The four episodes are familiar and fun-filled, but would rather have all of the show’s episodes in one convenient set. So if you are looking for a few laughs from the original Scooby-Doo series, this release is worth checking out.
The TV series features the blue-suited IMAGINATION MOVERS – Rich, Scott, Dave and Smittyas everyday guy brain-stormers working hard to solve “idea emergencies” in their Idea Warehouse, a place of infinite inspiration. The series introduces preschoolers to the Movers’ energetic rock and roll style of music while emphasizing creative problem solving skills. Through music and storytelling, the Movers encourage kids to exercise their bodies and brains with their motto – “Reach high, think big work hard, have fun!”.
In each episode of IMAGINATION MOVERS Warehouse Mouse Edition, the Movers, along with their friendly neighbor Nina and sidekick Warehouse Mouse, identify an “idea emergency” and then brainstorm problem-solving techniques, test out possible solutions and by the end of each episode, have used teamwork to solve the problem. IMAGINATION MOVERS, Warehouse Mouse Edition features four episodes and an exclusive bonus episode of the upcoming animated Playhouse Disney series Special Agent Oso.
IMAGINATION MOVERS premiered on Playhouse Disney in September 2008, with new episodes continuing to roll out into 2009. The series has been picked up for a second season, which will begin production in the spring. The quartet has won multiple national music awards and were named a Parenting Pick by Parenting Magazine. Most recently, the Movers and the TV series were honored with an award for Outstanding Kids Entertainment by the Common Sense Media Awards, which honors nationally recognized individuals and organization that have made a profound impact in the world of kids and family media. The Movers’ Walt Disney Records release, “Juice Box Heroes,” was selected by iTunes as a 2008 Top 10 pick in the children’s music genre.
BONUS FEATURES *Exclusive episode of upcoming Playhouse Disney Series “Special Agent Oso.”
The fun-filled DVD, perfect for summer vacation fun, features four episodes and a bonus feature starring the entire Clubhouse Gang –Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy and Pluto- on a series of exciting adventures including a day of fishing, a surfing beach party luau and much more. In the new episode Donald’s Ducks, Mickey and Donald rescue ten adorable ducklings in search of a summertime beach. The Mouseketools are put to work in Pluto’s Bubble Bath when Mickey and Pluto each get stuck in a Giant Bubble and start floating away from the Clubhouse eventually ending up back to ground just in time for a fun Tea and Biscuits Party with their friends. In Mickey Goes Fishing, Mickey and Pluto search for lunch for Pluto’s kitten, Mr. Pettibone. While in Pete’s Beach Blanket Luau, it’s the hottest day of the year and Pete decides to put on a Luau down at the lake to cool off.
The DVD also features an all-new game called ‘Fun In The Sun with Mickey and the Gang” that includes fun luau party planning activities and games.
With songs and dances and images known the world over, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse — Mickey’s Big Splash provides to young audience members another opportunity to see the iconic characters. Plus, it’s even enjoyable for adults if they’re willing to give it a chance. And there’s really not much more you can ask for from a preschool series than that.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button represents cinema at its finest. Recounting a simple tale; easing the burden of, but not eliminating, the more weighty and deeper complexities of the narrative; and presented with tenderness and affection for the story, the characters, and the medium of film itself. Though failing to capture the Best Picture Oscar in a year featuring several deserving films, there is no doubt that it will continue to be recognized as a monumental accomplishment in filmmaking for its approach, themes, acting, and special effects. The Criterion Collection presents The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Blu-ray with stellar results, the disc easily one of the best overall packages on the market. This disc easily and enthusiastically earns our highest recommendation.

Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade–it’s an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock ‘n’ roll!

There is no doubt that Grease must be one of the most watched or heard film musicals of all time. It is not a great movie by any means – certainly not at the level of Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, or Evita for that matter. It is however a fun easy kind of movie that anyone can enjoy. It does not take itself seriously, but just seeks to entertain us.If you are a fan of Grease, I would suggest a strong buy for the improved picture and sound quality.
Synopsis: High-schooler Ferris Bueller (Mathew Broderick), his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara), and his best bud Cameron (Alan Ruck) are off on the spontaneous romp through Chicago known as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. You’ll also enjoy righteous bonus materials that give you an insider’s peek at this hilarious comedy hit from John Hughes (Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Sixteen Candles). So, barf up a lung, forge a “sick note” from the parents, and tag along on the funniest adventure to ever sweep through the Windy City. What are you still doing here? Save Ferris!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off resides among the best the Comedy genre has to offer. Paramount has done right by the film’s Blu-ray releasing, providing a good video transfer, a surprisingly robust and clear soundtrack, and a few extras. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes highly recommended.
Named the “Bueller…Bueller…Edition,” this Blu-ray release of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off isn’t absent special features, but it certainly doesn’t earn an A for quantity, either. Getting the Class Together — The Cast of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ takes a fairly interesting and strong look at the assembly of the cast, told through both classic and retrospective interviews. The Making of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ is another piece the combines both classic and retrospective interviews that this time look at the making of several scenes in the film, accompanied by behind-the-scenes photographs and clips from the movie. Who is Ferris Bueller? looks at the qualities that define the film’s title character, told through interview clips and film footage.

Cartoon lovers would be crazy not to get their hands on a copy of the upcoming feature-length release, Looney Tunes Movie Collection: Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie, Now on DVD from Warner Home Video (WHV). This rollicking and rambunctious collection features a compilation of classic Looney Tunes shorts produced by legendary animator, Friz Freleng.
The ear-repressible Bugs Bunny takes top billing in this rip-roaring feature-length romp through some of the wackiest cartoon classics. Titled, Looney Tunes Movie Collection: Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie, this film is cleverly comprised of three parts. Each portion features a collection of legendary cartoon shorts that are bridged with new material. The result is a seamless work of animated art that takes viewers on a mad cap adventure a la Looney Tunes style!
Part one has Yosemite Sam strike a deal with the devil! Sam winds up in hell, after he’s crushed by a safe dropped by Bugs Bunny. Satan however agrees to give Sam another chance so long as he brings someone else to take his place. Sam sets his sights on none other than his nemesis, that “wascally wabbit” and sets out for his capture.
Part two finds Bugs Bunny as a police detective who goes after a group of gangsters. The mobsters, Rocky and Mugsy, who in spite of being captured numerous times, always manage to free themselves due to some loophole in the law. Rocky and Mugsy capture Daffy Duck after they learn he’s capable of laying golden eggs and go so far as kidnapping Tweety Bird for ransom.
Part three, the finale, showcases a vicious and entertaining satire of the Oscars. Bugs Bunny turns Hollywood’s glitziest awards ceremony into a cartoon-star-studded disaster zone called The Oswald Awards. Bugs hosts the ceremony in which the nominees are the wolf from Three Little Bops, Sylvester and Tweety and himself. Daffy Duck however, gripes about not being nominated. When Bugs wins the award, Daffy is furious and challenges Bugs to a talent showdown.
Classic cartoons featured on Looney Tunes Movie Collection: Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie include Hare Trimmed, Devil’s Feud Cake, Roman-Legion Hare, Sahara Hare, Wild and Wooly Hare, The Unmentionables, Golden Yeggs, Catty Cornered, Three Little Bops, High Diving Hare and Show Biz Bugs. Academy Award winners Birds Anonymous and Knighty Knight Bugs are also included in this collection.
The release will also include three bonus cartoons: Box-Office Bunny, From Hare to Eternity and Pullet Surprise. Box-Office Bunny follows the story of how a massive movie theater gets built over Bugs’ rabbit hole. From Hare to Eternity tells the tale of how Pirate Yosemite Sam digs up a treasure chest which belongs to Bugs Bunny. Finally, Pullet Surprise covers the action when Pete Puma tries to raid the henhouse Foghorn Leghorn is guarding.
“Looney Tunes Movie Collection: Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie is really unique in the sense that it presents viewers with classic, legendary cartoon material set within a fresh, new context,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing. He added, “Kids will be entertained with this movie because it features all their favorite Looney Tunes characters and adults will appreciate the film’s hilarious satirical references. We are delighted to offer consumers this enormously entertaining film.”

Volume 1 Experience the classic Marvel® legacy as the X-Men animated series finally explodes onto DVD for the first time. Featuring stories adapted directly from the original comic books, this collection is a piece of Marvel history and a must-have for every X-Men fan. Discover the origins of your favorite characters and uncover the secrets of Magneto and more of the world’s most diabolical villains in X-Men: Volume 1.
This Volume 1 set contains 16 episodes. Season 1 contained 13 episodes, so this set also contains the first 3 episodes for Season 2. The beginning of Season 2 reintroduces a new character and covers the marriage of Scott and Jean.
It’s a great start to the series, but since they cover such important storylines in this and the second season, the remainder of the series feels slightly disjointed or less important. They got the best out of the way early and were left with a lot of single stories later in the series.
