An Early Look at Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red”

Turning Red

On March 11, 2022, Disney and Pixar’s 25th feature film Turning Red by director Domee Shi will release exclusively on Disney+.

Turning Red gives us a look at the trials 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) undergoes as she navigates the treacherous route of adolescence between childhood and teenage years with the additional complications of an overly-attached mother, embarrassing emotional and physical changes, and a new tendency to Hulk out into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited.

Turning Red

Recently, Socalthrills.com was invited to take an early look at Turning Red and hear from some of the filmmakers on a virtual press day.  The session started off with director Domee Shi and producer Lindsey Collins talking about finding the story of Turning Red, building the creative team behind the film, and that most important aspect of tween life:  Boy Bands.

The Story

Shi:  “Turning Red is inspired by my own relationship with my mother.  I was born in Chongqing, China, and immigrated to Toronto, Canada, when I was two years old.  And like Mei Lee in the movie, I am an only child.  I was always very, very close with my parents, especially my mom, since my dad had to go away often for work.

“…Then as all kids do, I started to grow up, I started changing…getting into anime, comics, and hanging out more and more with my friends and less with my mom.  She did not understand why I was obsessed with these fictional characters, and why I drew them over and over again in my sketchbook…I was being pulled one way, but my duty and my love for my parents were pulling me in another way.

Turning Red is inspired by this universal struggle of growing up, and figuring out how to handle that push and pull.  How to handle honoring your parents, but also staying true to yourself.  For Mei Lee in the movie, the red panda is that magical spark that sets off this internal conflict within herself, ’cause up until that point, you know, Mei thinks she has it all figured out like we all did before we suddenly woke up and realized oh, my gosh we’re covered in hair, we grew five feet overnight, we smell, and our emotions are all over the place.  We want to use the red panda as an adorable metaphor for the unadorable phenomenon of puberty.  For all the scary, awkward, and cringy changes that we go through during this age, and more specifically, we really wanted to explore the nuances of Asian parent-child relationships in dealing with change, and of intergenerational conflict, and how it can shape who we become.

Turning Red is quirky and surreal, but at its core, it is a mother and daughter finally embracing change in all of its messy, and furry forms, even if it means saying goodbye to the relationship you once had.”

The Setting

Turning Red

Shi:  “This is gonna be Pixar’s first contemporary tween girl protagonist and I really wanted the world to reflect her character.  I wanted it to feel colorful, chunky, and cute, bold and in your face, just like Mei.

“We decided to set it in Toronto, Canada, during the early 2000s–it’s not just the era when I grew up, it’s also, I feel, the height of teen girl pop mania, the height of boy bands, of pop music, of idols.  Also, we just wanted to tell a coming-of-age story and…tell this story in an environment in a simpler time of-of flip phones, CDs, jelly bracelets, and Myspace.

“We also love the multicultural aspects of Toronto:  The mosaic of different cultures, languages, and traditions in one city, and we really wanted to celebrate that on screen.  Especially for Mei’s friends–we wanted them to reflect the diversity that I saw in my friend groups when I was in school.”

The Team

Collins:  “(One) thing that was really exciting about this was that it was the first time that we’ve actually had an all-female leadership team on a feature film.  I’ve actually been surrounded by incredibly talented women throughout my career at Pixar, so it’s not necessarily surprising that we landed this team, but it was really exciting.  I can’t say for certain if being led by all women had a kind of tangible, or quantifiable effect on the movie we made or how we made it, but I do know that working on it with this group of women…really inspired something unique in all of us, and that kind of spirit of pride and excitement and fun definitely shines through in the movie you’ll eventually see on screen.”

The Music

Collins:  “In terms of the score, we turn to kind of an unlikely but yet totally obvious composer, Ludwig Göransson. He’s a multi-award-winning composer best known for Black Panther, and most recently, The Mandalorian. But in addition to his prowess at movie scores, he’s also a music producer who has worked with Childish Gambino, Justin Timberlake, Adele, and Lizzo, just to name a few.  So he bought a perfect mix of traditional score, but also a deep, early 2000s pop knowledge to the movie.”

Boy Bands

Shi:  “I feel like boy bands are often ridiculed by media, as most things that teen girls are obsessed with are, and with this movie, we really wanted to pay tribute to this cultural phenomenon and not just make fun of it.  We make fun of it a little bit, but we also honor it as well.

“Boy bands represent, for many girls, their first foray into adolescence, into music, fashion, and pop culture and they offer a safe, soft, and non-threatening introduction to subjects like love and relationships and S-E-X.  For Mei, 4*Town represents a new alluring world that is the total opposite of her mom and her home life.  A world that she’s been pushing away until the red panda arrives and brings her passions to the surface.”

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 30: Billie Eilish attends “Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles” Worldwide Premiere at The Grove on August 30, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney)

Collins:  “Billie Eilish was actually relatively unknown but adored by my kids in 2016 when her song “Ocean Eyes” was being played on repeat in my house, so when we started to think about songwriters who could kind of capture the early 2000 sound and bring something fresh to it, Billie’s name came up.  After further research with the Disney music team, we got a better sense of Finneas and Billie and what their influences were, what
their style was, and figured out why not start with our dream choice?

“…Billie and Finneas agreed to do it, and we were so, so happy they did.  Their songs really brought 4*Town to life and Finneas actually even sings as one of the band members himself–he’s Jesse, for those keeping track.  In the end, they wrote three original songs for us in the movie.  We kind of wanted to give them inspiration for the types of songs we were looking for when we talked to them, so the first one we said was called the confidence booster.  That’s the song you sing to one of your friends when they’re feeling down.  Then we want a hit song that everybody knows.

It’s the song you can’t get out of your head and you belt out at full volume in the car and…they delivered massively on that one ‘cause I think we’re all still singing the song.  Then they also delivered us a love ballad which is the kind of song that makes you feel like you just had your heart broken, even though you’re 13 and have never gone on a date.”

Lending their voices to Pixar’s first-ever boy band are Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo and Finneas O’Connell.  One of the three songs written by Billie Eilish and Finneas, “Nobody Like U” is featured in the official trailer:

Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red will debut exclusively on Disney+ on March 11, 2022.

Sofi Stadium added to Legoland CA Miniland U.S.A.

Legoland

Just one month after Super Bowl LVI is held at SoFi Stadium, a 1:50 scale LEGO® model inspired by the first indoor-outdoor stadium to be constructed will make its debut in Miniland U.S.A. at LEGOLAND® California Resort. The LEGO stadium structure will join other top Southern California attractions featured in LEGO form, including the Griffith Park Observatory, Hollywood Bowl and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Legoland

At more than 30 feet long, 15 feet wide and over 4 feet tall, the new SoFi Stadium is expected to be the largest LEGO® stadium in the world. It’s on track to break the Guinness World Record for the largest LEGO® brick sculpture of a stadium, which is currently held by LEGOLAND® Deutschland Resort for a replica of Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Football fans will undoubtedly appreciate the extreme attention to detail that went into creating the final LEGO SoFi Stadium model; for instance, the NFL game that’s played on the field in Miniland is inspired and reflects the Los Angeles Rams’ starting offensive roster! Families may even see a concert or two being held at the stadium, to highlight the talented artists who are scheduled to perform at SoFi Stadium throughout the year.

Legoland

“SoFi Stadium is an architectural marvel and is considered one of the most innovative NFL stadiums in the entire league, making it an obvious choice for our first addition in the expanded Southern California region of Miniland U.S.A.,” said President of LEGOLAND California Resort Kurt Stocks. “The anticipation of Super Bowl LVI taking place at the life-sized SoFi Stadium in February makes this build even more special for us.”

It will take a team of 25 dedicated Master Model Builders more than 6,000 hours and more than 500,000 LEGO® bricks to complete the final model of SoFi Stadium before it’s installed this spring.  SoFi Stadium is the first installation in a series of additions to the Southern California section of Miniland U.S.A., with more LEGO model highlights to be announced in the coming weeks.

Legoland

In addition to exploring Miniland U.S.A., families can enjoy LEGOLAND California’s nine other themed lands, including the new The LEGO® Movie™ World, by booking a Vacation Package, starting at $160 per person. LEGOLAND Vacations include a stay at a LEGOLAND Vacations Hotel (nearby partner hotels) and two-day LEGOLAND Park tickets. Guests can also purchase single-day tickets (starting at $89.99 per person) or annual passes (starting at $179.99 per person) with or without a hotel stay.

Theatre Review: Million Dollar Quartet

Million Dollar Quartet

“Million Dollar Quartet” is the Tony Award-winning smash-hit musical inspired by the true story of the legendary recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for the first and only time back on December 4, 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis, TN.

With live performances at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts until Sunday, February 13, 2022, you’ll see exactly why this dramatization was one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions to have ever materialized.  The amazing pool of talent brought together to recreate and relive that moment in music history features more than 20 timeless and enduring classic hits including “Blue Suede Shoes”, “That’s All Right”, “I Walk the Line”, “Great Balls of Fire”, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”, “Hound Dog”, “(Ghost)Riders in the Sky”, and “See You Later Alligator”.

Million Dollar Quartet

It’s the kind of jukebox musical that ties rockabilly and gospel influences together tightly-nit with very real behind-the-record drama. Bringing the heartfelt and soul-enriching characters to life not just by covering high-energy songs perfectly, but capturing the real life counterparts mannerisms and behaviors that the audience can easily get absorbed into emotionally.

Walking into this production blind, I came with the assumption the show would just sugarcoat and make all the songs, artists, and producer shine and sparkle like a fairy-tale. The production does so in the best way, but also surprisingly acknowledges the uphill battles, sympathetic drama, struggling backgrounds, sensitive controversies, and uncertain futures, sharing that human and vulnerable element that the audience can relate and retain attachment. These are not just legends of their time. They parallel timeless themes of living. There’s still a strong relevance that transcends age.

Million Dollar Quartet

The enduring cast engulf the stage with live music, natural chemistry, high-energy, and irresistible charm. Jacob Barton brings the incomprehensible swagger of “Elvis Presley”. Steven Lasiter as “Johnny Cash” with that signature deep vocal. Trevor Dorner is a riot as “Jerry Lee Lewis”.

Showcasing the best of his signature moves like Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future”. And Nathan Burke as “Carl Perkins” brings to light what it is to remain in the dark. Then there’s Sean Casey Flanagan as “Sam Phillips”, music producer of Sun Records, the proud man of the hour fighting his way to the top by discovering the best.

Million Dollar Quartet

Taylor Kraft as “Dyanne” as Elvis’ lady friend but more importantly sliding in her sultry rendition of “Fever” to the testosterone filled recording studio.  And, of course, Justin Bendel as “Brother Jay” and Jon Rossi as “Fluke” on cello and drums, respectively. Not to underplay these non-dialogue characters, but they do play a large part in the entertainment value behind all the main players. There wouldn’t be a show without them. Be on the lookout for their moments to shine sporadically throughout the 2 hour show.

“Million Dollar Quartet” is the best of Broadway and Vegas combined. The passion and raw high energy wasn’t just beaming out from the burning lights and loud speakers, they were shining through this star-studded cast.

Million Dollar Quartet

Million Dollar Quartet

Performances on select dates and times until Sunday, February 13, 2022. My Fair Lady Theatre Review

My Fair Lady

The Lincoln Center Theater Production of “My Fair Lady” at Segerstrom Center for the Arts blossoms as “lovely” as the elegant flowers it pedals. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote the book and the score, adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s famous play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture “Pygmalion”.

The story follows Shereen Ahmed (“The Sound of Music; “Shrek”) as impoverished flower girl Eliza Doolittle being ridiculed by upperclassmen of higher social and economic stature.  Laird Mackintosh (“The Phantom of the Opera”; “Mary Poppins” as linguistics Professor Henry Higgins conducts a social experiment with fellow highly educated Kevin Pariseau (“Legally Blonde”; “Chicago”) as Colonel Pickering founding the project. In six months time, the two “gentlemen” shape unrefined Eliza to speak, dress, and act like a duchess to the gleeful delight of their own ego.

They gallantly flaunt their prize unbeknownst to the wealthy guests of extravagant social gatherings and to the sorrowful tune of their subject’s objectification.  While Eliza’s personal goal for a new life by improving appearance and linguistics skills, the constant belittling of her sex and upbringing displays the relentless narcissistic personality of Higgins and his less than noble charity work.  This bickering accumulates with Higgins realizing his own setbacks but never admitting them.  Story ends from here. As a young patron unfamiliar and holding no nostalgia for the class act of “My Fair Lady”, the story’s unsatisfying conclusion left me baffled. I later learned apparently I am not the only one with this passionate sentiment.

My Fair Lady

The supporting cast bring parallels and further context to the lives surrounding that of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins. Adam Grupper (“Wicked”; “The Addams Family”) as Alfred P. Doolittle plays Eliza’s father with class parameters and values not so different from that of Higgins despite appearances. Leslie Alexander (“Mamma Mia!”; “The Boy From Oz”) as Mrs. Higgins takes on a nurturing role as a spiritual moral compass.  Sam Simahk (“The King and I”; “Sweeney Todd”) as Freddy Eynsford-Hill is presented as a handsome suitor who shares an unrelenting admiration for Eliza in comparison to Higgins’ misogynistic behavior.

Despite the musical’s longevity and recognition in the theater community, I surprised myself disliking the story’s ending to a point where I find the entirety of the production almost irredeemable if it were not for the professional quality of the show’s exemplary performers, eye-popping set design, and commentary on class distinctions. The character of Higgins is not that of a charismatic jerk but more of a snotty prick you want to punch in the face… played brilliantly by Laird Mackintosh.  Shereen Ahmed carries a range of accents and character changes that is perfectly balanced.

My Fair Lady

You’ll want to root for Shereen Ahmed and boot Laird Mackintosh, respectfully. The vibrant and diverse cast handles the complexity of the characters and story with meticulous ease. The next time I view “My Fair Lady”, will have less focus on whatever connection there is between Eliza and Higgins as that relationship fell apart on me. Perhaps part of the underlying message sees classes and titles are not always as they claim and will continue the stakes with no end in sight.  “My Fair Lady” is a blooming high-caliber revival sure to water the dry ears of a musical audience.

My Fair Lady is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts until January 23, 2022.

My Fair Lady Update

We regret to report that the January 14, 2022 7:30 PM, January 15, 2022 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM and the January 16 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM performances of My Fair Lady are postponed due to positive COVID cases within the company. We apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience this scheduling change has caused ticket holders. Please hold onto your tickets while we work to reschedule the performance.

“The Santa Clause” Series Coming Soon to Disney+

The Santa Clause

Disney Legend Tim Allen will executive-produce “The Santa Clause” (working title), a Disney+ Original limited series in which he reprises the beloved role of Scott Calvin from Walt Disney Pictures’ blockbuster franchise.

Production is set to begin in Los Angeles in March. Award-winning Jack Burditt (“30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” “Frasier,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) is the executive producer and showrunner and Kevin Hench (“Last Man Standing”), Richard Baker and Rick Messina will also serve as executive producers.

The Disney Branded Television series is a production of 20th Television.

Allen won a People’s Choice Award for his portrayal of Scott Calvin, Santa Claus’s proxy, complete with expanding waistline, rosy cheeks and snow-white whiskers in the 1994 film “The Santa Clause.”. He went on to play the role in two sequels, both hugely popular movies, 2002’s “The Santa Clause 2” and 2006’s “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.”

In the Disney+ series, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.  With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.

Allen, whose popularity skyrocketed as the star of the top-rated ABC series “Home Improvement,” earned numerous awards for his role of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, including a Golden Globe in 1994 and The People’s Choice Award for eight consecutive years from 1992-1999. Allen also starred for nine seasons on the hit series “Last Man Standing.”

In 1995, the multi-talented actor lent his voice to Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s first computer animated film, “Toy Story.”  He reprised the iconic role as the arrogant yet lovable space action figure in two sequels, 1999’s “Toy Story 2” and 2010’s “Toy Story 3.” He also appeared as the character in a number of “Toy Story” short films including “Hawaiian Vacation,” “Small Fry” and “Partysaurus Rex.”

He reunited with the creative team from “The Santa Clause” to make Disney’s “Jungle 2 Jungle,” and also starred in the feature remake of a Disney classic,” The Shaggy Dog,” in 2006.

Allen also lent his own voice as narrator to the 2012 Disneynature documentary, “Chimpanzee” and co-starred in the 2007 Touchstone comedy “Wild Hogs” along with the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest.”

In 1994, Disney’s Hyperion Publishing released his debut book, Don’t Stand Too Close to a Naked Man. It topped the New York Times Bestsellers list and led to a second book, also published by Hyperion, I’m Not Really Here.
