Disney+ has revealed the opening title sequence and key art for the original series “Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life,” now premiering Wednesday, July 28. Comprised of three seven-minute stories, each episode follows two tiny troublemakers, Chip and Dale, trying to live the good life in a big city park while having giant-sized, sky-high adventures.
Nervous worrier Chip and laid-back dreamer Dale make the perfect odd couple: they’re best buddies and they drive each other nuts. In their perpetual pursuit of acorns, these ultimate underdogs are joined by Pluto, Butch and other iconic Disney characters as they face down bullies great and small.
Filled with laugh-out-loud cartoon comedy, wacky adventures and heartfelt storytelling, the 12-episode series will debut new episodes weekly on Disney+.
“Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life” is produced by Xilam Animation with Marc du Pontavice as Executive Producer/Producer and Jean Cayrol as Director. Vincent Artaud serves as the series composer.
The newest film from Pixar Animation Studios is Luca, their 24th animated film released by Walt Disney Studios. This is Pixar’s third film in less than 18 months, with Onward being released last March at the start of the pandemic and immediately moving to Disney+, and Soul being released directly to Disney+ in November. Luca is also going directly to Disney+ with a limited engagement at the El Capitan in Hollywood. While Pixar typically releases one film every 12-18 months, in recent years they’ve started coming in closer succession.
Announced just one year ago, the film marks the feature-length directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa. His previous credits include story artist work for multiple Pixar films and as writer-director of the 2011 short film, La Luna, which premiered before Brave. Similar to that short, Luca is set in Italy: a coming-of-age tale about a young boy, inspired by the director’s life growing up in Genoa. But more than a coming-of-age tale, Luca is a “fish out of water” tale, quite literally.
Luca tells the story of a teenage sea monster named Luca Paguro living off the coast of a fictional Italian city named Portorosso. Working on his family’s sea farm as a fish herder, he has always been told to avoid going to the surface. But through his curiosity and discovery of numerous artifacts from the surface world, he meets another teenage sea monster named Alberto Scorfano. Quickly, friends, Alberto takes him up to the surface where he transforms into a human (when dry), and Luca’s view of the world is changed forever.
Alberto shows Luca his collection of “land monster” artifacts, and both of them become fixated on the Vespa scooter. They decide to venture into Portorosso, which is a fisherman’s village that hunts the fabled sea monsters, in order to find their own Vespa to take on adventures. Feeling out of place in their new human form, Luca accidentally tangles with the local bully Ercole Visconti, a pompous older teenager who believes he is admired by everyone.
Moments before being beaten up, they are saved by Giulia Marcovaldo, a local girl who also feels like an outsider. Together as underdogs, the three of them team up to enter the Portorosso Cup, a local triathlon of swimming, eating, and running, for a chance to win prize money.
For Luca and Alberto, it’s an opportunity to buy a Vespa and gain freedom from their sea lives. And for Giuliana, it’s to win respect in her town after previous losses in the contest. But the true challenge will be keeping their identities as sea monsters a secret from Giuliana, her father, and the rest of Portorosso.
Luca features the voice talents of Jacob Tremblay (Room, Good Boys) as the title character and Jack Dylan Grazer (It, Shazam!) as Alberto. Newcomer Emma Berman voices Giulia. Additional voices are provided by Saverio Raimondo as Ercole Visconti; Marco Barricelli as Massimo, Giulia’s father; and finally Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan as Daniela and Lorenzo, Luca’s parents.
Since Pixar has increased the frequency of their films, the end results have been a hit or miss. But let’s start with a positive. The animation in Luca is beautiful. The transitions between sea monster and human form are smooth, the Italian city of Portorosso and its landscapes/atmospheric elements look phenomenal, and the food-induced a pasta craving. It was also clear that the character design was directly inspired by the director’s short film La Luna. It’s a different style than other Pixar films, but one that worked for the story and wasn’t distracting like The Good Dinosaur.
Beyond Luca’s animation, the story felt…familiar. When Coco was released in 2017, with its beautiful animation and authentic Mexican culture references, its plot always felt like a retread of multiple others from Pixar or Disney films (Up, Ratatouille, Zootopia, and Moana specifically). Luca seems to suffer from the very same problem. The story is very simple, but it’s hard not to draw comparisons to several other Pixar films (Monster’s, Inc. / University, Ratatouille, Cars, and Coco, ironically).
The film also seemed to be lacking two things that are staples of other Pixar films: emotion and revelation. Nearly every Pixar film has that specific moment where the character(s) come to grips with a conflict, and it plays out in a deeply emotional scene. It’s presented as a lesson for both children AND adults and effectively renders the latter into tears. Luca just didn’t have that – the resolution of the film is fine, and there is a conflict that’s overcome. But it lacks a strong message and makes the struggles shown in the film seem not very serious.
Due to pandemic, the film was completed almost entirely at home and although the animation quality did not suffer, the story felt like a short film that had been expanded on a razor-thin plot. There’s a lot of Italian humor and references, but unlike Ratatouille which has a reason to be set in France, Luca is a story that could have been told anywhere with minor tweaks. The Italian accents used on certain characters also made them very hard to understand, or even to remember their names.
In summary, Luca is passable but not memorable. There’s a lot of charm here, but it isn’t something to revisit multiple times. While not a bad or even flawed film, the story just isn’t engaging enough to make you invested in its outcome. With the exceptions of Inside Out, Soul, and even Coco (despite its reused plot points), several of Pixar’s recent films have felt weak or lacking originality. It seems that releasing multiple films in closer succession brings uneven and forgettable results.

The LA Zoo is home to 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles, representing more than 270 different species (photo by Greg Aragon)
When I heard that the Los Angeles Zoo had finally reopened a few weeks ago, I knew it was time for a return visit to one of my favorite local attractions. I then made advanced online reservations, which are currently required for all guests, including members.
My getaway began when me and the family walked beneath the giant, iconic metal zoo sign at Griffith Park and entered the wild wonderland.
Meerkats are playful, foot-tall squirrel-like creatures that live in tunnels (photo by LA Zoo)
One of the first animals that caught our eye was the meerkats, located near the entrance. These playful, foot-tall squirrel-like creatures are members of the mongoose family and are found in arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Their habitat at the zoo is made up of a complex systems of burrows with multiple levels and many entrances and exits. A mob of meerkats may construct several burrow systems scattered over many miles. These burrows are usually lined with grass and include a common latrine.
The meerkats are very outgoing and seem to enjoy posing for pictures as they stand on their hind legs on rocks or termite mounds—using their tails for stability—and scan the horizon for predators such as hawks, eagles, or jackals.
Giraffes are the tallest land animals, growing to 18 feet tall (picture by Greg Aragon)
After the meerkats we hurried to see the Masai giraffes, which can stand 18 feet tall, making them the lookout towers of the savannah. Their six-foot-long necks enable them to eat leaves, flowers, and twigs that most animals cannot reach. Like humans, giraffes have seven neck vertebrae, although each neck bone may be over 10 inches long. The animal’s prehensile tongues measure about 18 inches long and are covered with bumps that protect it from thorns.
While studying these magnificent creatures I learned that female giraffes give birth to babies while standing up and the newborns can weigh 150 pounds and stand up 30 minutes after entering the world.
Our next exhibit was the Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains exhibit. Lauded by primatologist Jane Goodall as one of the finest zoo habitats, this one-acre environment is home to a large troop of chimpanzees. When we got there, the animals were lounging on rocks, grooming themselves and climbing around.
The enclosure is designed to resemble the native environment of Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains in Africa and features mountainous rock formations, waterfalls and streams, palm trees and soft green grass. The facility also features a chimpanzee penthouse with heated bedrooms for the apes and an outdoor playground that has a jungle gym.
The Campo Gorilla Reserve is home to western lowland gorillas, the largest, most powerful great ape (photo by Greg Aragon)
From the chimpanzees, we stopped at Campo Gorilla Reserve. Home to western lowland gorillas, the enclosure is highlighted by a forested pathway that visitors walk along to see the animals living among waterfalls and lush plants. Gorillas are the largest, most powerful of the great apes, a primate group that also includes chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans. They share about 98 percent of their DNA with humans.
The zoo’s gorilla enclosure has two separate troops of gorillas, a family and a bachelor group. The troops are led by a big silverback, who was eating a head of romaine lettuce when we got there. Glassed viewing areas and planted moats are all that separates Zoo guests from the largest primate in the world.
After hanging out with the primates, we walked to see the Grevy’s Zebras, the largest and most threatened of the three zebra species. The animals are wild relatives of donkeys and horses. They inhabit semi-arid and open scrub grasslands in Africa. The colorful creatures were running around in circles and eating grass when we stopped by.
From the zebras we headed to see Elephants of Asia, a sprawling, 6.56-acre exhibit boasting more than three acres of outdoor space, deep bathing pools, a waterfall, sandy hills, clever enrichment opportunities, and a high-tech barn capable of caring for elephants of all sizes and ages. The exhibit is so large, there are four different viewing areas to get a good look at the giant pachyderms.
The elephant enclosure features sandy hills, planted forest paths, and built-in enrichment opportunities to encourage exercise and exploration. Water features include a 20-foot waterfall, a mud wallow, two large pools deep enough to allow elephants to fully submerge, and a 16,600-square foot barn.
Crocodiles love to bask in the sun at the zoo (photo by Greg Aragon)
Other cool things to see at the zoo include alligators and crocodiles, hippos, a giant condor, tower giraffes, and Flamingo Mingle.
The 133-acre Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to more than 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles representing more than 270 different species, of which more than 58 are endangered. In addition, the Zoo’s botanical collection comprises several planted gardens and more than 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants.
The LA Zoo is located in Griffith Park, at the intersection of the 5 and 134 freeways. The address is 5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, CA. 90027. Reservations are required to visit. For more information and tickets, visit: www.lazoo.org
As the world finds its way to piece its way back together, Legoland California does the same. But with plastic bricks for the delayed but now open LEGO Movie World. Those familiar with the Carlsbad theme park will recognize portions of the new land as a redressing of Heartlake City that was previously based on LEGO Friends. But the LEGO Movie franchise is far more appealing even to the average LEGO fanatic, myself included.
Same awesome store, new super cool stuff
The Heartlake City Boutique is now The Awesome Shop (with super cool stuff).
Come hone your skill as the next Master Builder
A horse barn themed LEGO brick construction play area under a structure is now a “Build Watevra You Wa’na Build”. That’s literally what this is called. But at least there’s a new snack stand by the entrance. Perhaps the best-themed food item is a star-shaped cookie inspired by LEGO Movie: The Second Part. The snack stand is themed as “Benny’s Rocket Fuel”, which pairs nicely with the newly constructed playground structure in the center of the land.
The vertical structure is well-themed where guests can find Benny himself putting together a rocket. General Mayhem can also be found nearby sitting on a bench. The Heartlake Fountain water play area is saved and also pairs well beside the rocket play area.
The best place to be “horsing” around
Next is a merry-go-round ride previously themed as Mia’s Riding Camp is now Queen Watevra’s Carousel, respectfully. The same horse-themed ride favorite with a new coat of paint.
Unikitty invites you to “drop” a few beats
For a little something new, Unikitty’s Disco Drop Tower is a family fun ride that lifts guests up 35 feet in the air before bouncing down and up to you with giggles. The top of the pair of towers displays the character’s emotional range while entertaining riders.
Soarin’ around the LEGO world
Next door is the crown jewel that anchors the new land, Emmet’s Flying Adventure – Masters of Flight. This simulated flying ride is essentially just like the Soarin’ attraction found at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. Emmet has constructed a triple-decker couch for guests to ride in to win a master-building contest. Unfortunately, the line moves slow and it’s difficult to get a sense of even what you are riding except to immediately compare it to Soarin’.
Perhaps have an oversized blueprint in the queue made by Emmet planning out the steps of building the couch. In fact, it would be nice to have a triple-decker couch as a photo-op outside of the ride entrance to get a clear visual. There’s already a photo-op of LEGO people on benches where guests position their heads in for photos. But for the most part, Emmet’s Flying Adventure is a fun indoor ride that can be easily enjoyed even for non-LEGO Movie fans.

The rest of the land line-up includes more re-theming of previous establishments and carried-over menu favorites. City Park Creperie is now Cloud Cuckoo Crepes. The ramen restaurant appears to have more outdoor seating.

Emmet’s Super Suite is where you can meet and greet and take photos with Emmet or one of his friends. It’s not too elaborate with just a small lobby, Emmet’s living room set, and a green screen room to purchase photos. This building was large enough for an indoor LEGO Movie experience as a walk-through attraction of the first movie’s set-pieces.
A similar experience for the second movie is now in the Imagination Zone. So with that in mind, it’s a little disappointing to what became of this space.
Where else can you see a bunny and a banana sitting on a bench holding balloons?
I would almost compare LEGO Movie World to Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure theme park. That land previously known as Paradise Pier brought in a more familiar and slightly broad intellectual property that can be enjoyed by visitors both not familiar and huge enthusiasts of the characters and their world. There’s a lot more to see and do compared to the land’s predecessor.
More colorful settings to immerse into. And there are more familiar LEGO movie characters you’d want to take selfies with. Overall, those families visiting with small children who know what type of experience to expect from previous visits to a LEGOLAND theme park will thoroughly enjoy the new LEGO Movie World while still sprinkled with something a little familiar from the past.
