Disney+ “Monsters at Work” takes place the day after the Monsters, Incorporated power plant started harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis, thanks to Mike and Sulley’s discovery that laughter generates ten times more energy than screams.
It follows the story of Tylor Tuskmon, an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer until he lands a job at Monsters, Incorporated, and discovers that scaring is out and laughter is in. After Tylor is temporarily reassigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), he must work alongside a misfit bunch of mechanics while setting his sights on becoming a Jokester.
Produced by Disney Television Animation and inspired by the world of Disney and Pixar’s Academy Award-winning “Monsters, Inc.,” the series introduces new monster characters alongside returning favorites.
Ben Feldman stars as the voice of Tylor Tuskmon, alongside other new cast members including Mindy Kaling as Val Little, Henry Winkler as Fritz, Lucas Neff as Duncan and Alanna Ubach as Cutter. Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their beloved roles as Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan.
“Monsters at Work” was developed and is executive produced by Disney animation veteran Bobs Gannaway (“Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Planes: Fire & Rescue”). Sean Lurie (“Inner Workings”) is producer, and Kat Good (“Big Hero 6 The Series”) and Steve Anderson (“Meet the Robinsons”) serve as supervising directors. The late Rob Gibbs (“Monsters, Inc.”) also served as director on some of the earlier episodes.

The LA Zoo is home to 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles, representing more than 270 different species (photo by Greg Aragon)
When I heard that the Los Angeles Zoo had finally reopened a few weeks ago, I knew it was time for a return visit to one of my favorite local attractions. I then made advanced online reservations, which are currently required for all guests, including members.
My getaway began when me and the family walked beneath the giant, iconic metal zoo sign at Griffith Park and entered the wild wonderland.
Meerkats are playful, foot-tall squirrel-like creatures that live in tunnels (photo by LA Zoo)
One of the first animals that caught our eye was the meerkats, located near the entrance. These playful, foot-tall squirrel-like creatures are members of the mongoose family and are found in arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Their habitat at the zoo is made up of a complex systems of burrows with multiple levels and many entrances and exits. A mob of meerkats may construct several burrow systems scattered over many miles. These burrows are usually lined with grass and include a common latrine.
The meerkats are very outgoing and seem to enjoy posing for pictures as they stand on their hind legs on rocks or termite mounds—using their tails for stability—and scan the horizon for predators such as hawks, eagles, or jackals.
Giraffes are the tallest land animals, growing to 18 feet tall (picture by Greg Aragon)
After the meerkats we hurried to see the Masai giraffes, which can stand 18 feet tall, making them the lookout towers of the savannah. Their six-foot-long necks enable them to eat leaves, flowers, and twigs that most animals cannot reach. Like humans, giraffes have seven neck vertebrae, although each neck bone may be over 10 inches long. The animal’s prehensile tongues measure about 18 inches long and are covered with bumps that protect it from thorns.
While studying these magnificent creatures I learned that female giraffes give birth to babies while standing up and the newborns can weigh 150 pounds and stand up 30 minutes after entering the world.
Our next exhibit was the Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains exhibit. Lauded by primatologist Jane Goodall as one of the finest zoo habitats, this one-acre environment is home to a large troop of chimpanzees. When we got there, the animals were lounging on rocks, grooming themselves and climbing around.
The enclosure is designed to resemble the native environment of Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains in Africa and features mountainous rock formations, waterfalls and streams, palm trees and soft green grass. The facility also features a chimpanzee penthouse with heated bedrooms for the apes and an outdoor playground that has a jungle gym.
The Campo Gorilla Reserve is home to western lowland gorillas, the largest, most powerful great ape (photo by Greg Aragon)
From the chimpanzees, we stopped at Campo Gorilla Reserve. Home to western lowland gorillas, the enclosure is highlighted by a forested pathway that visitors walk along to see the animals living among waterfalls and lush plants. Gorillas are the largest, most powerful of the great apes, a primate group that also includes chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans. They share about 98 percent of their DNA with humans.
The zoo’s gorilla enclosure has two separate troops of gorillas, a family and a bachelor group. The troops are led by a big silverback, who was eating a head of romaine lettuce when we got there. Glassed viewing areas and planted moats are all that separates Zoo guests from the largest primate in the world.
After hanging out with the primates, we walked to see the Grevy’s Zebras, the largest and most threatened of the three zebra species. The animals are wild relatives of donkeys and horses. They inhabit semi-arid and open scrub grasslands in Africa. The colorful creatures were running around in circles and eating grass when we stopped by.
From the zebras we headed to see Elephants of Asia, a sprawling, 6.56-acre exhibit boasting more than three acres of outdoor space, deep bathing pools, a waterfall, sandy hills, clever enrichment opportunities, and a high-tech barn capable of caring for elephants of all sizes and ages. The exhibit is so large, there are four different viewing areas to get a good look at the giant pachyderms.
The elephant enclosure features sandy hills, planted forest paths, and built-in enrichment opportunities to encourage exercise and exploration. Water features include a 20-foot waterfall, a mud wallow, two large pools deep enough to allow elephants to fully submerge, and a 16,600-square foot barn.
Crocodiles love to bask in the sun at the zoo (photo by Greg Aragon)
Other cool things to see at the zoo include alligators and crocodiles, hippos, a giant condor, tower giraffes, and Flamingo Mingle.
The 133-acre Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to more than 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles representing more than 270 different species, of which more than 58 are endangered. In addition, the Zoo’s botanical collection comprises several planted gardens and more than 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants.
The LA Zoo is located in Griffith Park, at the intersection of the 5 and 134 freeways. The address is 5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, CA. 90027. Reservations are required to visit. For more information and tickets, visit: www.lazoo.org
As the world finds its way to piece its way back together, Legoland California does the same. But with plastic bricks for the delayed but now open LEGO Movie World. Those familiar with the Carlsbad theme park will recognize portions of the new land as a redressing of Heartlake City that was previously based on LEGO Friends. But the LEGO Movie franchise is far more appealing even to the average LEGO fanatic, myself included.
Same awesome store, new super cool stuff
The Heartlake City Boutique is now The Awesome Shop (with super cool stuff).
Come hone your skill as the next Master Builder
A horse barn themed LEGO brick construction play area under a structure is now a “Build Watevra You Wa’na Build”. That’s literally what this is called. But at least there’s a new snack stand by the entrance. Perhaps the best-themed food item is a star-shaped cookie inspired by LEGO Movie: The Second Part. The snack stand is themed as “Benny’s Rocket Fuel”, which pairs nicely with the newly constructed playground structure in the center of the land.
The vertical structure is well-themed where guests can find Benny himself putting together a rocket. General Mayhem can also be found nearby sitting on a bench. The Heartlake Fountain water play area is saved and also pairs well beside the rocket play area.
The best place to be “horsing” around
Next is a merry-go-round ride previously themed as Mia’s Riding Camp is now Queen Watevra’s Carousel, respectfully. The same horse-themed ride favorite with a new coat of paint.
Unikitty invites you to “drop” a few beats
For a little something new, Unikitty’s Disco Drop Tower is a family fun ride that lifts guests up 35 feet in the air before bouncing down and up to you with giggles. The top of the pair of towers displays the character’s emotional range while entertaining riders.
Soarin’ around the LEGO world
Next door is the crown jewel that anchors the new land, Emmet’s Flying Adventure – Masters of Flight. This simulated flying ride is essentially just like the Soarin’ attraction found at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. Emmet has constructed a triple-decker couch for guests to ride in to win a master-building contest. Unfortunately, the line moves slow and it’s difficult to get a sense of even what you are riding except to immediately compare it to Soarin’.
Perhaps have an oversized blueprint in the queue made by Emmet planning out the steps of building the couch. In fact, it would be nice to have a triple-decker couch as a photo-op outside of the ride entrance to get a clear visual. There’s already a photo-op of LEGO people on benches where guests position their heads in for photos. But for the most part, Emmet’s Flying Adventure is a fun indoor ride that can be easily enjoyed even for non-LEGO Movie fans.
Not all heroes taste “crepes”Amen to ramen
The rest of the land line-up includes more re-theming of previous establishments and carried-over menu favorites. City Park Creperie is now Cloud Cuckoo Crepes. The ramen restaurant appears to have more outdoor seating.
Livin’ it up
Emmet’s Super Suite is where you can meet and greet and take photos with Emmet or one of his friends. It’s not too elaborate with just a small lobby, Emmet’s living room set, and a green screen room to purchase photos. This building was large enough for an indoor LEGO Movie experience as a walk-through attraction of the first movie’s set-pieces.
A similar experience for the second movie is now in the Imagination Zone. So with that in mind, it’s a little disappointing to what became of this space.
Where else can you see a bunny and a banana sitting on a bench holding balloons?
I would almost compare LEGO Movie World to Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure theme park. That land previously known as Paradise Pier brought in a more familiar and slightly broad intellectual property that can be enjoyed by visitors both not familiar and huge enthusiasts of the characters and their world. There’s a lot more to see and do compared to the land’s predecessor.
More colorful settings to immerse into. And there are more familiar LEGO movie characters you’d want to take selfies with. Overall, those families visiting with small children who know what type of experience to expect from previous visits to a LEGOLAND theme park will thoroughly enjoy the new LEGO Movie World while still sprinkled with something a little familiar from the past.
Welcome to a new world
Same awesome store, new super cool stuff

Check out Emmet’s new wheels!

In celebration of World Ocean Day on June 8th, Gameloft, leader in the creation and publishing of games, is thrilled to announce an upcoming fundraiser in collaboration with noted conservation nonprofit Ocean Conservancy.
The fundraiser will take place in Disney Magic Kingdoms from June 3rd through June 18th, 2021 as part of the new Finding Dory event. Players will be able to purchase a new ‘Destiny the Whale Shark’ bundle – and proceeds ($5.59 USD per bundle*) will be donated by Gameloft to Ocean Conservancy to support oceanic conservation with a minimum donation of $120,000 USD/€100,000 EUR, and a maximum donation of $480,000 USD/€400.000 EUR.
Founded in 1972, Ocean Conservancy is a nonprofit environmental organization that is working to protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges. Ocean Conservancy focuses on science-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and the communities that depend on it.
“Ocean Conservation is a cause very near and dear to our hearts at Gameloft and Gameloft Toronto,” said Rebeca Polo, Sr. Product Marketing Manager for Disney Magic Kingdoms. “Bringing together the magic of Disney Magic Kingdoms, Finding Dory, and the wonderful characters of this film in a way that can positively impact oceanic wildlife, including real whale sharks and other species, is a dream for us. Let’s protect the ocean together!”
Players who purchase the Finding Dory ‘Destiny the Whale Shark’ bundle will welcome Destiny to the game. This bundle will also include an adorable Dory Wishable Concession Stand that players will be able to add to their Kingdom, and its price will be $7.99 USD. In addition to this charity bundle, players logging into the game during World Ocean Day (June 8th) will also receive a very special ocean-themed gift – an exclusive Anemone Hat Concession Stand!
“We are so appreciative of Gameloft in bringing the wonder and awe of the ocean to the Disney Magic Kingdoms’ community during World Ocean Month,” said Sarah Humphries, Vice President of Resource Development at Ocean Conservancy.
“We are especially grateful to the Gameloft team and the millions of users playing for supporting Ocean Conservancy through this special ocean month campaign, which will help us tackle the greatest threats facing our ocean, and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.”
More information about Ocean Conservancy can be found here.
Knott’s Berry Farm finally blooms after a year-long closure to debut the delay of their 100th Anniversary of serving up their world-famous boysenberry preserves and chicken dinners. Walter and Cordella Knott founded their business from a small roadside stand in Buena Park where they also grew a legacy with the Calico Ghost Town.
The celebration brings along new changes and characters to the theme park that has seen a vast dedication to improving and preserving the operation and joy of this American stable. The Charles M. Schulz Theatre has respectfully been repainted and renamed the Walter Knott Theater with its intentions to bring back their seasonal ice-skating shows later in the year. Original Knott’s Berry Farm characters will be able to meet, greet, and take photos with guests from Whittles the Calico miner to the troublesome thieves from the park’s rebranded Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair interactive 3D dark ride.
The all-new Knott’s Bear-y Tales continues the adventures of the original dark ride that operated in the same space from 1975 to 1986. This is a welcome replacement over the short-lived Voyage to the Iron Reef (2015-2020) as the new adventure includes more practical and scenic environments that make the experience seem like one long continuous journey rather than just jumping from one video screen to another. Guests tour the boysenberry factory where they must use a jelly blaster to stop Crafty Coyote and his mischievous pups from stealing boysenberry pies. The lively and whimsy music, colors, and characters also bring a sense of warm family-oriented fun over the cold and industrial motif of the ride’s predecessor.
Playful photo-ops have been installed throughout the Boardwalk and Ghost Town areas honoring past attractions. For those that remember the Kingdom of the Dinosaurs, Wacky Soap Box Racers, Parachute Sky Jump, and the Haunted Shack. Of all these great nods to the past, the Haunted Shack would be a welcome permanent addition. Not to outshine the original neon “K” sign from the top of the Sky Cabin tower now at eye-level and ready for its close-up.
The seasonal art gallery now themed to “Harvest of Memories” invokes the theme park’s past from trains, pies, chickens, miners, cowboys, and even can-can dancers. Unique and one-of-a-kind artworks are on display and ready to be shared, admired, and purchased. Even old attraction posters have been reprinted for the special occasion.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a fun-filled day at Knott’s Berry Farm without its energetic live entertainment and mouth-watering food. In fact, the Summer Nights food festival makes its return with cover bands and Kirk and the Hillbillies. Be sure to check the Knott’s Berry Farm website for ticket sales and reservation restrictions.
So how do you take a psychotic villain who’s hell-bent on kidnapping Dalmatians and skinning them to design a coat, and make that person…likable? Going into Cruella, it was hard to know what to expect. When Disney released their first trailer in February 2021, the internet reaction was clearly divided. And a number of comparisons were immediately drawn to films like Joker, Birds of Prey and The Devil Wears Prada. But that doesn’t appear to have been by accident.
Cruella actually leans heavily into the themes and styles of these movies, and it’s all the better for it. Whereas 2014’s Maleficent took a fantastic villain and watered her down, Cruella fully embraces that sometimes people are just born bad – and lets us find out why. But let’s go back in time a bit…
All the way back in 2013, news broke that Disney was developing a live-action film based on 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil. Following hot on the heels of the then-upcoming Maleficent, this would be the Mouse’s second exploratory film about a classic villain. And while that filmended up being commercially successful, it was a critical mixed bag.
Rather than retelling the Sleeping Beauty story, they chose to make one of their best baddies into a sympathetic protagonist. Yes, she was sort of evil – but mostly just misunderstood. It was a severely missed opportunity for its fantastic lead casting. Would Cruella follow in the same footsteps and end up a disappointment? Turns out, we were years way from finding out.
After two+ years of no news, Emma Stone was cast in the lead role in January 2016. And for almost three years, a number of writers and directors became involved with the project before departing. It started to seem like the film was going to be scrapped. But finally, director Craig Gillespie boarded the project in December 2018. His most recent film I, Tonya, which explored the life of figure skater Tonya Harding through a darkly comedic lens, had been met with critical and awards acclaim.
By May 2019, writers Tony McNamara (The Favourite) and Dana Fox came on to complete the screenplay. Emma Thompson was cast as the Baroness, touted as the main antagonist of the film who is responsible for Cruella’s change into the villain we’ve come to know. Joel Fry (Yesterday) and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell) also joined as Cruella’s crime duo Jasper and Horace. And finally Mark Strong, Kirby-Howell Baptiste and Emily Beecham rounded out the remaining cast.
At D23 in August 2019, it was revealed that principal photography had begun. Originally scheduled for release in December 2020, the film shifted to May 2021 due to the pandemic. Although it will simultaneously stream on Disney+ with Premier Access, the film faces a much broader theater release opportunity than Raya and the Last Dragon did just two months ago. And it will help kick off the summer box office season after more than a year of non-existent tentpole releases.
We are first introduced to a young Estella in 1964, living outside the city with her single mother Catherine. With her unique black/white hair, love for unique fashion and rambunctious personality, her wilder side is nicknamed “Cruella.”Estella struggles at school and tussles with classmates until she’s expelled. Her mother decides it’s time to move to London and try to start over. But a terrible accident befalls her, for which Estella appears responsible. She attempts to run and loses her only heirloom – a red necklace. Now orphaned, Estella stows aboard a truck and continues on to London.
With no possessions and nowhere to live, she follows two homeless boys (Jasper and Horace) back to their hideout. Realizing the potential of their new trio, they live a life of crime and theft to stay afloat. Growing from adolescents to young adults, bouncing from job to job, stealing when they can and moving on to the next score. But Estella feels she is meant for something more and wishes to pursue a career in fashion.
After securing a legitimate job with a renowned fashion designer known as The Baroness (Thompson), Estella begins to come into her own. But there are connections to her new boss that are yet to be revealed. She learns The Baroness has actually acquired the red necklace she once had as a child, and a plan to steal it back emerges. And whilst working under her, Estella embraces her own designer alter-ego Cruella in an effort to ruin The Baroness’ reign as London’s fashion icon. Thus, a war between designers is born.
Let’s talk about the casting. Glenn Close had an iconic turn as Cruella de Vil in the 1996 remake, and many felt it was going to be hard to match. Fortunately, those fears were all for naught. Emma Stone absolutely crushes it and makes it her own. She subtly changes from Estella, just trying to survive in the world to a confident and devilishly exuberant Cruella, out for revenge. Through her wild outfits, hairstyles and make-up, each new look is more elaborate and little more mad.
Equally brilliant as the adversarial Baroness is Emma Thompson. Comparisons will inevitably be drawn to Meryl Streep’s role in The Devil Wears Prada, but Thompson is even more ruthless. Stalking above her employees in the design studio, taking credit for their work, and inflicting physical harm in some instances. Her interactions with Stone and other characters are sharp-tongued, and often sinisterly hilarious. And her outfits are equally lavish.
The rest of the supporting cast is strong as well. Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser are perfect as Jasper and Horace, the right and left-hand men of Cruella’s bad deeds. Mark Strong also does well per usual playing a subdued but ultimately vital role as the valet to Thompson. Additional supporting cast members Kirby-Howell Baptiste, Emily Beecham, John McCrea and Kayvan Novak all do well in their respective roles.
From a production standpoint, the film is stellar. Firstly, the soundtrack is killer. During the viewing, I found myself adding multiple songs to my music library. Setting the film in 1970s London during the birth of punk subculture was a brilliant move. Costume designer Jenny Beavan (Mad Max: Fury Road) nailed the period and designed some truly stunning pieces.
There were some breathtaking long takes from cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis (I, Tonya) and opulent sets from production designer Fiona Crombie (The Favourite), all of which really added to the mood and time period.
As a prequel/origin story, how well does it tie into the original 101 Dalmatians and Cruella de Vil we’ve come to know? Similar to Joker, this feels like more of an inspired-by-origin story rather than a true prequel. Necessary changes were made to the Cruella character to make her someone you’d root for, but still on the crazy side. Dalmatians are still an important part of the story but in a creative new way. And there are definitely some great call-backs to the original story, especially in the end credits.
The only complaint with the film are some of the montage sequences of Cruella working to overshadow The Baroness. Several of them are overlaid with newspaper headlines showing Cruella’s rise in the fashion world. Stylistically, it was very busy and sometimes too quick, which made it hard to appreciate the outfits being displayed and read the headlines at the same time. While this is a small nitpick, the scenes could have lingered just a few seconds longer or have been edited a bit differently for the same effect.
Overall, Cruella is a damn good time. Standout performances from Stone and Thompson, wicked humor and lavish art direction. While Disney has faltered on some of the live-action recent remakes for either being too similar or too different, Cruella seems to hit the sweet spot.
More than anything, it feels like a grown-up movie too. It’s dark and it has some pretty heavy moments but isn’t too scary for kids. Disney aficionados will be pleasantly surprised by the story and likely find it to be one of their best reboots yet.
Score: 8.5 / 10
