Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s “Mulan,” in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
“Mulan” features a celebrated international cast that includes: Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Tzi Ma as Zhou, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Honghui; Ron Yuan as Sergeant Qiang; with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin, suggested by the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.” The producers are Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, and Jason Reed, with Bill Kong, Barrie M. Osborne, Tim Coddington and Mario Iscovich serving as executive producers.
After years of perfecting the recipe and non-stop DMs from Instagram fans, Black Tap will now offer its first fully vegan CrazyShake® with a signature Black ‘N White flavor. Since launching the CrazyShake® in 2015, Black Tap has searched for the right combination of high-quality ingredients that would be globally accessible to construct the perfect vegan shake. The shake will be at Black Tap Anaheim starting on February 1.
“Our original CakeShake is one of our best sellers, so we took that idea and ran with it to create a new shake with a classic New York taste and all vegan ingredients,” says Black Tap Creative Director, Courtney Wright. “We held over 12 tastings with our global team, trying many different shake bases, testing eight different cake recipes, and multiple whipped cream formulas before landing on the final shakes for each market. We wanted to perfect every little component to ensure all the flavors would complement each other, while still offering that rich, indulgent flavor everyone wants in a milkshake. We’re really happy with the result, and are so excited for everyone to try it!”
The Black ’N White CakeShake is a nod to Black Tap’s New York roots and the city’s famed black and white cookie. After a thorough R&D process, Black Tap’s culinary team crafted the shake using high-quality vegan alternatives such as applesauce for a perfectly moist cake, and a non-dairy whipped cream that can pass the test when piled high on the cake. It starts off with a chocolate shake, housemade vanilla frosting and chocolate chips on the rim, and is topped with a slice of black and white cake, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.
“Research shows that veganism grew 600% from 2014 to 2017, but we don’t have to read the stats to know vegan foods are in demand. Our customers ask for them every day,” says Black Tap Owner, Chris Barish. “However, we knew we needed to take our time to carefully craft this shake and not simply put any shake on the menu. Our creative and culinary teams created something truly special, full of craveable sips that will give our guests the awesome Black Tap experience they’ve come to love, whether they’re vegan or not.”
The launch of The Black ’N White CakeShake is the latest addition to a larger vegan menu roll out which includes Black Tap’s take on the legendary Nashville Hot with a fried portobello mushroom twist. Last fall, Black Tap also held multiple focus groups in order to bring a new vegan burger to the menu, and customers unanimously chose the Impossible™ burger patty. In response, Black Tap is now rolling out the Impossible All-American, a plant-based version of their best-selling All-American burger. These new menu items, along with the new Black ’N White CakeShake will soon be available at all locations in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Pricing varies by market.
Gray whales migrate 5,000 miles from Alaska to Bahía Magdalena in Baja California (photo by Greg Aragon)
January through April is whale-watching season along the California coast and into Baja California. Each winter, thousands of gray whales travel about 5,000 miles from cold Alaskan waters to the warm bays of Mexico. When spring comes, the animals turn around and head back.
There are many great places to see this great whale migration and one of the best spots I’ve experienced is Bahía Magdalena in Baja California. This beautiful, 30-mile-long lagoon in the Pacific Ocean is protected by two unpopulated, sandy barrier islands called Isla Magdalena and Isla Santa Margarita. It is about 175 miles north of Cabo San Lucas.
Bahía Magdalena is one of the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystems in Baja California Sur, making it a popular spot for whale watching, fishing, and ecotourism. The diverse marine habitats found here include mangroves, dunes, sand bars, islands, deep water areas, seagrass beds, and numerous canals. The rich diversity is welcoming to many animals, including migrating birds, sea turtles, humpbacks, dolphins, blue whales, orcas, and gray whales
The gray whales migrate southward every January from their summer feeding grounds in the arctic Bering and Chukchi Seas to the warm calving lagoons found in Bahía Magdalena. In late March and early April, they head back up north to return to feeding grounds. This annual round-trip journey is about 10,000 miles and the giant mammals swim almost two months each way.
taking a cruise with Uncruise Adventures is a great way to see whales in Baja California (photo by Greg Aragon)
I discovered Bahía Magdalena while taking a cruise through Baja California and the Sea of Cortez with UnCruise Adventures (www.uncruise.com). The seven-day voyage was aboard a 232-ft-long ship called Safari Endeavor, a relatively very small cruise ship that holds 84 passengers and about 35 crew members. I boarded the vessel in a rustic harbor in Los Cabos, Mexico.
The cruise sailed north up the Sea of Cortez, hugging the rugged coastline, giving passengers a preview of the week-long adventure ahead. There were endless miles of deserted beaches, jagged mountains and hidden coves to explore. And since it was an UnCruise expedition, aboard a small ship, it meant docking in tiny bays, using snorkeling gear, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore the water; and feet to discover uncharted lands.
The first stop on the cruise was gorgeous and deserted Ensenada Grande. Located on Isla Partida, Ensenada Grande is part of a protected UNESCO biosphere reserve. With the Endeavor anchored a few hundred feet offshore we passengers took small skiffs to the beach, where we set up camp and went exploring. Along the hike, I discovered desert cactus hiding behind large sand bluffs, pufferfish skeletons along the beach, and clear turquoise water.
Our next stop was Agua Verde, where we found a postcard destination of craggy mountains, turquoise water, and unspoiled beaches. While here I hopped on the back of sure-footed burro and rode through the canyons and mountains to experience the “real Baja.” Along the way, I encountered a desert oasis, numerous types of giant cactus, a lost beach, and listened to our guide sing traditional Mexican Ranchero songs.
From here the ship cruised to Bahía Magdalena in search of gray whales. To get to this whale wonderland, passengers rode in vans two hours across the beautiful Baja peninsula, past mountains, valley, lakes, and deserts full of towering cactus. When we arrived at the bay, we boarded small panga boats and floated into the serene, 30-ft deep lagoon.
In a few minutes, our captain/guide pointed to a “footprint” along the water’s tranquil surface, an indicator that a gray whale was about to appear. And sure enough one did make a cameo, and then another and then a couple of babies arose from the water. Soon, our 20-ft panga was “swimming” alongside a giant, 45-ft-long mother and her 15-ft baby.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance sets a new standard for what a Disney theme park experience can be, as guests become heroes of the Resistance in a climactic battle with the First Order. In one of the most immersive, ambitious and technologically advanced attractions ever created for a Disney park, guests launch into space aboard a transport shuttle, only to be captured by a Star Destroyer and pursued by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren as they frantically search for a way to escape the clutches of the First Order.
This new attraction inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge draws guests into a sprawling Star Wars narrative that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, as jaw-dropping sights brimming with vivid detail create surprises around every turn. In one of the longest Disney attraction experiences ever, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance delivers thrilling action driven by cutting-edge technology and innovative design that gives guests the feeling of stepping inside a Star Wars film.
Guests exploring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge finds the Resistance’s temporary encampment in the forested area along the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost on Batuu. The gateway to the encampment is marked by a large turret. From there, a pathway leads deeper into the forest toward towering cliffs and the crumbling remains of an ancient civilization. Guests weave through low stone walls, timeworn pillars, and tight corridors as they progress farther into the base, hearing military communications chatter along the way. In a makeshift briefing room, Rey – a hero of the cause – appears via holo-transmission alongside dutiful droid BB-8 to welcome the new Resistance recruits. She shares a plan to reunite with General Leia Organa at an off-planet location that must be kept secret from the First Order. Guests then board a nearby Intersystem Transport Ship (I-TS) and have to make their rendezvous quickly to avoid a First Order Star Destroyer on its way to Batuu. They should have a bad feeling about this …
Actors from the current Star Wars film trilogy reprise their roles for new scenes and dialogue in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, including Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux). Many scenes were filmed at the same time “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” were in production.
Poe Dameron’s X-wing is one of several vehicles from the Star Wars galaxy appearing in the attraction.
Disney cast members adopt personalities of First Order and Resistance troops throughout the attraction to further deepen the immersive experience for guests.
Walt Disney Imagineering worked hand in hand with Lucasfilm in writing the attraction’s script, ensuring characters and storylines were properly integrated into the broader Star Wars
The attraction introduces a new featured character: Lieutenant Bek is a Mon Calamari Resistance officer who helps guide the Resistance recruits through their harrowing journey.
Walt Disney Imagineering combined multiple ride systems to tell the story of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. In one sequence, a new simulator experience gives the sensation of falling from space to crash land on Batuu. The trackless ride vehicles in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance are some of the most advanced ever used in a Disney attraction, with a sleek, low profile and the ability to move in all directions. Disney A-1000 Audio-Animatronics figures appearing in the attraction provide a deep level of immersive storytelling through their lifelike and dynamic movements. To fully realize this Star Wars story, Imagineers created thousands of special effects, from slashing lightsabers and whizzing blaster bolts to exploding walls and massive starfields – just to name a few.

Check outabrand-newfeaturette that dives into the legacy of Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow since her introduction on the big screen 10 years ago in “Iron Man 2.”In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.
Set on the Rhine River, Stein am Rhein is one of Europe's most intact medieval villages (photo by Greg Aragon)
In April of 1944, the tiny town of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, was mistaken as German territory and accidentally bombed by Allied planes. The town, which is the only sizeable chunk of Swiss territory on the north bank of the Rhine, survived – just as it has since medieval times.
I visited Schaffhausen last spring, at the start of a tour around the Swiss section of beautiful Lake Constance, Europe’s third-largest lake.
My journey began in Zurich, with the purchase of an invaluable Swiss Pass, which allows visitors to travel on all trains, trolleys, buses and numerous boats. The pass even gets you into hundreds of museums and a myriad of other Swiss activities. In an efficient mass transit country like Switzerland, the pass is gold.
After overnighting in Zurich, I took a train 45 minutes north to Schaffhausen, where I checked into the Sorell Hotel Rüden (www.rueden.ch), set in a guild house from the 14th and 15th centuries. The 30-room hotel, which has been had been faithfully restored to reflect the building’s long history, features modern furnishings, newly renovated bathrooms, and elegant accommodations.
The property is in the middle of the pedestrian zone of picturesque Schaffhausen Old Town. It is three walking minutes from the Main Train Station and a short jaunt from historic Old Town Schaffhausen, where there are plenty of shops, cinemas, restaurants, and bars to experience. The Rhine River can also be reached easily on foot from the hotel.
Highlights of Schaffhausen include the 16th-century Munot fortress, a casino, Schaffhausen Theater, numerous Gothic and Renaissance buildings, wineries and the spectacular Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. Though only 75 ft. high, the falls manage to push an incredible 25,000 cu.-ft. of water per second through massive river boulders, creating a thunderous roar heard throughout the countryside.
From Schaffhausen, I boarded a small ferry for a trip down the Rhine to Stein am Rhein, one of the most intact medieval villages around. Founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 11th century, the village is highlighted by ancient framed houses, painted with flamboyant frescoes. The paintings were not only a sign of wealth, but many were also meant as stories and warnings for townspeople who couldn’t read.
After touring Stein am Rhein, I caught another boat down the Rhine to the town of Kreuzlingen, where I got my first glimpse of Lake Constance. As the multi-level boat drifted down the historic river, I relaxed on the deck with a plate of stroganoff, a cold beer, and a front-row seat to a classic Swiss countryside speckled with rolling hills, marshlands, charming hamlets, farms, chalets, colorful harbors, and the distant white peaks of the Alps.
After stops in both Swiss and German towns, the ferry arrived in Kreuzlingen. Here I flashed my coveted Swiss Pass and boarded a train to the tiny town of Arbon, where I checked into The Restaurant – Hotel de Charme Römerhof (www.roemerhof-arbon.ch/en/), a charming little hotel with 11 guest rooms, a gourmet restaurant, two historic halls, and a cigar Lounge.
Located in a building built in the 16th century, the hotel is in the center of the old town of Arbon, steps from Lake Constance. All rooms are comfortably furnished and feature a private bathroom, writing desk, telephone, hairdryer, safe, Nespresso coffee machine, internet, and TV. Besides elegant accommodations, the hotel is known for its restaurant that serves classical French cuisine with a mix of world flavors and local touches.
Beyond the hotel is the historic town of Arbon, located on the southern shores of Lake Constance, near Bregenz, Austria. The medieval city is highlighted by a big, beautiful castle, lots of green spaces and a 1.8-mile-long lakeside path that is a haven for walkers and cyclists. A variety of markets, concerts, and festivals take place throughout the year in Fischmarktplatz (Fish Market Square).
The best feature of The Restaurant – Hotel de Charme Römerhof is its proximity to Lake Constance. The lake, Europe’s third-largest, shares 162 miles of shoreline with Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Because of language and close proximity, the peoples of the lake region share a proud historical and cultural bond.

Blue Man Group at Segerstrom Center for the Arts was a hilarious and energetic adventure into the bizarre.
This show is chock full of mind-blowing tricks, innovative musical instruments, comedy, and audience participation. Lead by Blue Man Captain Meridian, there are three additional Blue Men on tour; Mike Brown, Steven Wendt, and Adam Zurich. The Blue Men do not need to talk to tell a really amazing story. Their voiceless antics are reminiscent of silent film era comedy, relying on silly gags and body language to get the audience roaring.
The music is enchanting, done almost entirely live. The core focus is on percussion, with the Blue Men playing imaginative instruments made from PVC pipes and other various items, accompanied by a drummer (Corky Gainsford) and an instrumentalist (Jerry Kops). The level of talent in this group is just awe-inspiring.
If you have already seen the Blue Man Group, or are not sure of whether or not you will enjoy this, go see it. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and that’s it’s a charm. It’s a party where you came in knowing no one and left with lots of new friends, and maybe… some confetti in your hair.
