Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Introduces 13th Roundtrip

The AmtrakPacific Surfliner will soon offer an additional train in each direction between Los Angeles and San Diego, giving customers expanded options for travel along the southern California coast. Tickets can now be purchased for travel beginning October 14.

A schedule change, effective Monday, October 14, features the addition of a 13^th Pacific Surfliner round trip between Los Angeles and San Diego. The new southbound Train 578 will depart Los Angeles at 1:15 p.m., arriving in San Diego at 4:12 p.m. Existing northbound Train 591 will be renumbered to Train 593. New Train 591 will depart San Diego at 5:25 p.m. and arrive in Los Angeles at 8:34 p.m.

“Each of the new trains will fill a nearly three-hour gap in our existing schedule, providing expanded possibilities for business and leisure travel between Los Angeles and San Diego,” said Al Murray, chairman of the Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency, which oversees the Pacific Surfliner service. “We appreciate the support of the state of California, Amtrak, BNSF Railway, and our local member agencies in launching these additional trains, which mark the first expansion of Pacific Surfliner service in the past three years.”

The Pacific Surfliner travels along a 351-mile route through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties, with portions of the route hugging the Southern California coastline. As part of the new schedule, minor changes are also being made to arrival and departure times of other Pacific Surfliner trains to improve reliability and coordination with other trains.

“This service expansion represents the initial benefit of a decades-long, multi-hundred million dollar capital investment by the state of California to add a third track and grade separations between Los Angeles and Fullerton, which will greatly expand capacity and reduce delays for passenger and freight trains on this busy rail corridor,” said Chad Edison, chief deputy secretary for rail and transit at the California State Transportation Agency.

“We look forward to adding additional passenger rail service in the near future, taking full advantage of the new frequencies enabled by the completion of this project.”

With almost 3 million riders in 2018, the Pacific Surfliner is the busiest state-supported intercity passenger rail route in the United States and will now offer a total of 26 trains a day between Los Angeles and San Diego.

All Pacific Surfliner trains feature comfortable, reclining seats with power outlets, Wi-Fi, bike and luggage racks, a free and generous baggage policy, and an onboard Market Café that offers fresh food, snacks, and beverages, including California wines, cocktails, and local craft beer.

“As the second busiest rail corridor in the United States, the Pacific Surfliner has generated significant demand for customers,” said Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson. “The LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency alongside the state of California had the vision to expand transportation and we are thrilled to see that investment realized. With service that connects major cities along the Southern California Coast – this increased service offers a significant benefit to customers.”

El Capitan Theatre presents MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL

Hollywood’s legendary El Capitan Theatre presents a special engagement of Disney’s MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL, October 17 to November 17, shown in brilliant Dolby Vision Laser Projection & Dolby Atmos Sound Technology.

Theatre Review: Miss Saigon

Hilarious and heartbreaking; Miss Saigon at Segerstrom Center for the Arts will take you on a visually stunning emotional journey to the end of the Vietnam War, and some of the lesser-known aftermath of America’s involvement in Vietnam.

Set in Saigon in 1975, we meet a boisterous club/brothel owner called “The Engineer” in his crudely built club called “Dreamland.” The Engineer has been profiting from the Americans who are in Vietnam at war, and the girls hope that they may meet one who will like them enough to take them back to America with them. Kim, a 17-year-old from the countryside, is the newest girl to join the Engineer’s harem. She is modest, still hurting from the destruction of her village, and is not interested in strutting her stuff for Americans. A group of American soldiers stops by Dreamland, knowing that they will not be in Vietnam much longer, to party with the girls. One soldier, Chris, is the only one not enjoying the experience. He seems completely uncomfortable with what is happening around him until he sees Kim and is immediately intrigued. He attempts to pay for her to leave Dreamland, and John ends up buying her for him, misunderstanding Chris’ intent. Ultimately, Chris falls in love with her but finds out they are leaving that week. The whirlwind set in motion by this one fateful night will take audiences on a rollercoaster of emotion through the shady and (nowadays) offensive world of The Engineer, Kim’s life in her village, and the romantic and heartbreaking journey of Kim and Chris.

Red Concepción really steals the show as the crass, smooth-talking, multi-lingual Engineer. His amazing delivery of one-liners, show-stopping numbers like ‘If You Want To Die In Bed,” and “The American Dream,” absolutely delight. Concepción really lends to the character with his insane level of sustained energy through some very difficult numbers and scenes. Important: Be mindful that this character was not written to appeal to some of the sensitivities of today’s culture. Emily Bautista (Kim) is a beautiful singer, gracing the stage with her amazingly powerful voice and heart-wrenching performance; I only cried twice! Anthony Festa (Chris) has such a clear voice and stage presence, it was no surprise to see that he has also toured with Wicked and Finding Neverland. Other stands out performances were Jinwoo Jung as Thuy, Christine Bunuan as Gigi, and Haven Je as Tam. The set design was just phenomenal; with relatively few actual set pieces, audiences will be transported all over the world in just a moment with the flip of a wall. The famous helicopter scene was amazing as hoped; utilizing projection, lighting, sound, and physical set work to create an amazing sensory experience. Conductor Will Curry did a great job with the orchestration, especially working with all the nuance of The Engineer.

I came to this show with no fond memory of it, having seen it in my younger years and not found it memorable. I was unsure what to expect of this performance despite having technically seen it before. The sheer magnitude of this performance completely took me by surprise. I laughed, I cried, I was a bit uncomfortable. I highly recommend going to see Cameron Mackintosh’s tour of Boublil and Schönberg’s Miss Saigon.

Lobster Ravioli, Kayaking and Luxury Suites in Marina Del Rey

The lobster ravioli was delicious, the Bloody Mary was spicy and potent, and the view of colorful boats bobbing in the water behind my table was incredible. Dinner at Café del Rey was a great way to end a wonderful day in Marina del Rey.

My getaway to the waterfront city began when I checked into a gorgeous suite at The Hilton Garden Inn Los Angeles Marina Del Rey. The hotel, located across the street from the marina and beach, and within walking distance to restaurants, makes a perfect base camp while in town.

My suite at The Hilton Garden Inn overlooked the pool and featured a super comfy king bed, a spacious sitting area with sofa sleeper and two large TVs. Other room amenities included an office desk with complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, and a small kitchenette area with microwave, refrigerator, Keurig coffee maker and sink.

Beyond cozy rooms and luxury suites, the hotel boasts a Jacuzzi and heated pool with marina views, fitness center, 24-hour lobby business center, on-site bicycle rentals, a gourmet restaurant, and meeting/conference rooms.

But the hotel’s best feature is its proximity to the spectacular marina. Built-in the early 1960s at the site of an old salt marsh, Marina del Rey is a modern wonder of construction. As one of the world’s largest man-made small craft harbors, it features eight basins and is home to approximately 6,500 boats.

In spite of its epic marina and charming seaside location, Marina del Rey is still kind of a hidden gem. Located near larger, more famous areas of Los Angeles such as Venice Beach and Santa Monica, the tiny city can be overlooked. But for savvy travelers from around the globe, the place is a waterfront paradise.

“Marina del Rey is an urban waterfront playground that offers tourists resort-like amenities, exceptional hotel accommodations, and dining experiences with breathtaking Marina views,” says Janet Zaldua, CEO of the Marina del Rey Convention & Visitors Bureau.

To get an up-close look at the water and boats, and some of the luxury condos and new developments lining the shoreline, I rented a kayak from the Pro SUP Shop (www.prosupshop.com). Located in the parking lot in front of Mother’s Beach, the company specializes in stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking and offers daily rentals and lessons by professional ASI & WPA certified instructors.

During my hour tour of the harbor, I paddled past million-dollar yachts and old wooden sloops. I waved to small boats passing by and barking seals sunbathing on docks. Kayaking is not only a great way to see the harbor; it is also a good workout and very relaxing. For those looking to get into paddle boarding or kayaking Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey is probably one of the best places in the Los Angeles area to learn.

After playing on the water, I walked over to the swimming area for Mother’s Beach. Here I laid out my towel and put my umbrella in the sand and relaxed. I then headed back to my suite for a nap. For dinner, I walked 10 minutes to Café del Rey (www.cafedelreymarina.com).

Set on the harbor, with memorable views of boats and sunsets, Café del Rey is led by Executive Chef Job Carder who has created an exciting menu highlighted by creative seafood dishes, along with top-quality steaks, chicken, chops, and salads. The restaurant has been recognized by Food Network and Wine Spectator.

My meal at Café del Rey began with chilled large shrimp with fresh herbs and cocktail sauce. With this, I had a spicy Bloody Mary and homemade potato chips. For the main course, I enjoyed lobster ravioli with poached lobster tail, lobster mousse ravioli, lobster truffle sauce, mushrooms, peas, and bottarga. While devouring this succulent dish, I watched boats bob in the harbor just outside the window.

The next morning, I worked out at the hotel’s fitness center and then walked around the Oxford Retention Basin, a serene wetland habitat located next to Hilton Garden Inn. The basin is a serene wetland habitat that features a lovely nature walk and a bike path surrounding a small lake full of trees, birds and other wildlife.

After a few strolls around the nature loop, I walked down the street to breakfast at Cafe Buna (www.cafe-buna.business.site), a local favorite, known for its breakfast menu, which is served all day. Here I devoured Juevos Rancheros with flour tortillas, avocado, sour cream, over-easy eggs, ranchero sauce, beans, rice, and cheese.

Theatre Review: ‘Pixar in Concert’ at Musco Center for the Arts

The Musco Center for the Arts located on the campus of Chapman University was the perfect setting for a delightful evening of Pixar in Concert. Performed on September 28, 2019, the concert kicks off the theatre’s season of exceptional music concerts. Was a soothing audio experience that tickled the senses. The live orchestra featured the Chapman Orchestra with special guest artists. A moderated panel discussion preceded the main event that was open to Chapman University students that featured Michael Giacchino. Giacchino is one of the best-known and most successful composers working in Hollywood today. His Pixar contributions include UP, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille.

Chapman University is not the first concert venue that has featured a Pixar-themed concert. In the summer of 2012, the concert was performed in San Francisco and the Hollywood Bowl. And the Music of Pixar LIVE concert performed at Disney Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida in 2017. All variations were merit given the venue they were able to perform. But for patrons who have a real appreciation for music in the movies, Chapman University’s Musco Center for the Arts was the perfect stage to really let the music sweep you off your feet.

The program featured a particular focus on music composers that gave the evening a concentrated look at the different styles each person was able to contribute. The show went directly from one film overture to the next while montage clips of the accompanying movie played on a big screen in the background amongst a blue-lit orchestra. The backlight could have changed colors to match the movie playing, but that’s a minor nitpick and may have to do with visibility for the orchestra. The first half of the evening featured the enduring classics of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc, WALL-E, Cars, and UP. After a twenty-minute intermission, the show resumed with The Incredibles, Inside Out, Cars 2, Monsters University, Finding Dory, Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 3, and concluded on You’ve Got a Friend in Me from the Toy Story franchise. The overtures bounced back and forth between Randy Newman, Thomas Newman, and Michael Giacchino. So music from BRAVE by Patrick Doyle and The Good Dinosaur had little to no mention. Oddly enough, a bugs’ life was advertised but not mentioned even though the music was composed by Randy Newman. Not to mention the recent demise of that movie’s land from Disney California Adventure just down the road.

There was plenty to appreciate for the one-time performance. For those sitting nearest the orchestra, you can really feel like strings plucking on violins, the boom of wind instruments, and beat of the drums. The sight and sound quality give off the appeal of imagining being in a soundstage recording these great pieces of instrumental classics. The Chapman Orchestra doesn’t tell but shows you why Pixar is a master at its craft. To be able to hear the audience’s reactions to the musical humor behind Monsters, Inc., and WALL-E demonstrates the power music has on a movie even with no dialogue. WALL-E was even designed as a silent movie character, so alive to film music concert was made for this film. The audience could take its time admiring the instruments play during the slow and emotional moments like in the opening to UP. The wide shots and sweeping angles over Paris and driving through Ornament Valley in Cars take you to a whole new world. Then the thrill-a-minute action from The Incredibles turns up the heat and you’ll really see the orchestra take flight.

Marine Toys for Tots 2019 Christmas Holiday Campaign Kicks-Off

October 1, 2019, marks the official kick-off for the Toys for Tots 2019 holiday campaign running through Christmas. U.S. Marines and volunteers will be conducting 812 local toy collection and distribution campaigns in all 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Toys for Tots, a 72-year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to disadvantaged children during each Christmas holiday season. The toys, books and other gifts collected and distributed by the Marines offer these children recognition, confidence and a positive memory for a lifetime. It is such experiences that help children become responsible citizens and caring members of their community. Last year the Marine Toys for Tots Program fulfilled the holiday hopes and dreams of 7 million less fortunate children in over 800 communities nationwide. Since 1947 over 258 million children have been assisted. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a not for profit organization authorized by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of Defense to provide fundraising and other necessary support for the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. There are an estimated 15 million children living in poverty in the U.S. The mission of Marine Toys for Tots is to bring the joy of Christmas to less fortunate children with the goal to deliver a message of hope that will inspire youngsters to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. Exploring Autumn in Disney’s “Frozen 2” a World Uncovered Production Design

Much like the first film, which was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s 1845 fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” “Frozen 2” embraces the tenants of fairy tales, mythology and similar stories that were often written to explain the inexplicable. The all-new story takes place three years after the conclusion of the first movie: Elsa is queen and Anna is happy to have everyone she loves Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven under one roof. But, there is an underlying current of unrest which ultimately leads to a great adventure one that will bring clarity to everything we know about these characters. “‘Frozen 2’ is even bigger and more epic than the first and most importantly work together to form one complete story.

During a recent trip to the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, the Production Design team discussed what it took to create this new autumn look in the movie.

David Womersley, art director of environments, says that since Arendelle was designed for a mostly winter environment, his team had to ensure it would look good in autumn. Not only did we have to remove the snow from those we wanted to reuse, they had to be adjusted to look good against a new backdrop that included not just trees and leaves, but fall decorations.

When “Frozen” debuted in 2013, it largely reflected the icy ideas with cool tones, snow, and ice, despite the fact that it took place during summer. But “Frozen 2” is rooted in change, Anna and Elsa go on very specific journeys and they both grow and mature in the process.

Lisa Keene, co-production designer mentioned that since Frozen 1 takes place in the snow, it was a challenge to bring Fall to Arendelle. One of the challenges with the fall palette is, as you can imagine, are all those beautiful colors that we needed to experience. It can get chaotic very quickly. So, we had to make some very discreet choices about how we were going to take the world from “Frozen,” use the experiences that we had with our palette, and take that palette and move it into the new film.

According to Giaimo, the new palette in “Frozen 2” embraced the colors of autumn, which is often symbolic of change. A fall palette means an incredibly vibrant environment with striking colors that initially concerning and that it would pull focus from the characters, or look like a new place and time. But the team was able to create a ‘Frozen’ version of fall that still felt cool. The yellows in favor of oranges, orange-reds, and red-violets were minimized.

The film is set, in part, in an enchanted forest, a location filled with foliage, but underscored in magic. “It is a beautiful place that’s entirely surrounded by a wall of mist,” says Giaimo. We differentiate what fall looks like inside the enchanted forest versus outside, there are no blue skies in the enchanted forest. And since there is a wall of mist, there are deep layers of atmosphere that are filled with mystery.

So, when you’re building an organic environment, like a forest, it can get pretty chaotic pretty quick because you’re using all of the inspiration that was brought back on our research trips. We have specific plants and trees that we’re going to be using, added Keene. But how do you populate an entire world with this stuff, and do it in a designed, organized way?

Sean Jenkins head of environments mentioned that too really kind of keep it consistent across the entire film, we started building up our library, our library of trees, and bushes, and rocks that we would then be able to populate across a large region. We had, like, tens of thousands of trees there. And it’s tricky because of the autumn palette, you don’t want them to distract too much from the story that’s happening, and because you’re in an organic area, there’s a lot of kind of shot by shot hand placement of, this tree trying to steal the show, and it’s right behind the characters.

in addition to the forest, the movie was going to be spending and traveling through the village a whole lot more. There’s a song set in the village, which takes place across multiple areas of Arendelle.

So, there is a moment of then taking those opportunities to really kind of adding all of the little details throughout the village, which meant that for pieces that were already there, we needed to add a little bit more fidelity, or a little bit more detail, including statues, which were always there before.

Giaimo joined directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter Del Vecho and director of story Marc Smith on an epic trip to Norway, Finland, and Iceland to study the landscapes, people and cultures. They spoke to historians, authorities in the local customs and cultures, and environmental experts and botanists. And naturally, their trip was scheduled during autumn.

Review: Disneyland’s Resort Oogie Boogie’s Bash 2019 is fun for the entire Family

After a couple of years of Oogie Boogie from Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” played host to Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort, the moment has risen for our favorite bug-filled villain to officially bring the popular private Halloween party to Disney California Adventure. Mickey’s Halloween Party is now “Oogie Boogie’s Bash-A Disney Halloween Party”. Let’s not waste any more time to see all the tricks and treats offered for this family-fun evening. Don’t forget to wear your best Halloween costume; it’s encouraged!

New for 2019!

DescenDANCE Party

The party is just getting started in the Hollywood Backlot Stage as the Descendants crew from the Disney Channel Original Movie dance-off. Guests can dance along with the DJ or follow choreographed dance moves. A special surprise may just pop up at the end of the show before the dance crew returns back to the Isle of the Lost. This is a really fun dance party with an energetic team that gets your groove on.

World of Color Villainous!

World of Color finally sees the debut of a new Villains themed show in the park’s lagoon. Oogie Boogie reads from a storybook about a little girl named Shelley Marie as she tries to figure out if she wants to dress up as a villain or princess for Halloween. Shelley uses the Magic Mirror where she is thrust into the presence of various Disney villains encouraging her to dress up as themselves. The Evil Queen shares the cauldron with the skeleton dance, Ursula has her high-pitched garden slugs (reminiscent of the Oompa Loompa songs from Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), Dr. Facilier’s floating tarot cards, Hades’ Underworld with its light humor, and Maleficent rounds up the remaining villains with a rendition of “Night on Bald Mountain”.

While visually spectacular with plenty of uses of lasers, pyrotechnics, and imagery, the music, and pacing of the story can be a bit jarring upon first viewing. The music has more of an electronic dance vibe that doesn’t totally flow with a night-time spectacular. And especially with Oogie getting boogie with dance moves to a disco ball at the finale, the show is both a hit and miss.

Villains Grove

Think of this as those Winter Holiday Light displays at your local park or the zoo illuminating the trails and overhead trees with brilliant lighting effects and thousands sparkling beams of light. But the twist here in Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is the theme belongs to the villains. Frollo’s area is covered with colorful lights that would shine through a stain glass window of Notre Dame amongst flickering candelabras. Maleficent casts her spell in the forest with a manifesting briar patch. The Red Queen’s rose garden transitions between red and white with the Chesire Cat lingering above. Join Scar’s hyenas as you march through the elephant graveyard. Dr. Facilier conjures up a demonic spell with his friends from the other side. Now here is where it gets tricky. While the lightning on the trees followed by a crackle from the thunder and Old Hag looks sets the mood just right, the trail transitions into what most would expect from a winter light display rather than anything spooky or creepy from Halloween. The wisps from PIXAR’s “BRAVE” hover in the trees with a growing flower bed on the side of a fallen log. Then the trail ends as you walk towards a bright light with… warm and wholesome music.

Disney Junior: Mickey’s Trick or Treat

A Mad Scientist is joined by Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy as they sing and dance their way to candy while telling spooky stories. The cast of characters is dressed as a vampire, witch, mummy, and werewolf for Halloween fun.

Immersive Treat Trails

What sets Disneyland Resort apart from other theme parks, is the massive treat trails, that guests of all ages can have fun trick-or-treating for fun treats. Here are some of the newest treat trails that debuted at the new Oogie Boogie Bash 2019.

While there are plenty of trick-or-treat trails to go around, there are five specific locations that feature a specific character to interact with you. Mad Hatter, Evil Queen, Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, and the host of the evening Oogie Boogie make appearances. Oogie himself taunts guests inside the Animation Building where the lobby projections make it feel like home.

Frightfully Fun Parade

This returning favorite is essentially kept intact from Disneyland’s parties. The Headless Horseman still appears in the pre-parade with Ichabod Crane leading the way. The Chesire Cat takes his rightful spot at the finale float replacing Vampirina. Although there is only one showtime, the parade is long enough to be enjoyed during the night.

Characters Meet and Greet

Photo opportunities include Kingdom Hearts (Donald and Goofy), Disney Afternoon (Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers and Baloo with Don Karnage), Disney Channel (Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable with Phineas and Ferb) and other rare Disney Villains such as Shan Yu and the Big Bad Wolf. Please note during our visit, the characters did not make it out until well past the first hour of the party start time. And they’ll rotate about every half an hour.

Attractions

Returning for another round of seasonal Halloween overlays include Guardian’s of the Galaxy-Monsters After Dark in Hollywood Land and all of Cars Land is decorated including Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween and Mater’s Junkyard JamBOOree.

Overall

This new exclusive Halloween party is a fun family event for everyone to enjoy and be sure to bring your own large bag for all the candy waiting to be collected. Or invest in a reusable Halloween bag, available for purchase from various locations. Hopefully, the future we will see more decorations and additional parade floats. The Sunset Showcase Theatre would make a prime spot for a Halloween overlay. And there surely must be a demand for an official “Hocus Pocus” offering as high as the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Celebrates 10th Season with terrifying haunt

Welcome aboard the 10th season of Queen Mary Dark Harbor in Long Beach port! Navigate your way past the county fair food, performers, lounges, swing ride, 4D movie, and endless bars. That’s right, Queen Mary expanded its bar locations from last year with both public and secret bars inside the mazes. So be sure to interact with as many creepy characters to earn a coin to grant you admission. Best to leave the guide maps behind as they are frustratingly unhelpful. Keep to your gut and follow your instincts to the three mazes aboard the Queen Mary herself and three mazes onshore.

Rogue

You are amongst a troop of soldiers aboard the Queen Mary during its years as a wartime vessel. A rogue wave crashes into the ship causing confusion and fear. This “brand new” maze is essentially a reworking of the Deadrise maze design. The main difference is an added dome structure and added storyline of the Captain steering to safety, or perhaps a watery grave. The “capsizing” effect is achieved with projections, running water, and slanted walkways. There was an upside-down room that was not very clear upon walking through. The secret bar is inside the dome and can be clearly seen from an overhanging lifeboat. Thankfully intoxicated bar patrons do not get the option to blast bursts of water into innocent bystanders’ faces like last year. That was a huge safety concern from last year.

The finale seems to have guests “swimming” through a bubble filled exit. Fun, but can be slippery on the concrete floor. If that is the case, the actors need to communicate guests are swimming for our lives.

Circus

Walk past the enduring circus campsite and directly into the funhouse. Memorable elements of the circus remain but rearranged in different sequences with a deceptive mirror maze, rotating tunnel, moving floorboards, shuffling in a colorful ball pit, unravel a twisted spider lair, revealing dressing rooms, and a brightly lit infirmary for the finale. Be forewarned with the ball pit for anyone with mobility issues.

The carnival barker and his spinning wheel of misfortune appear to be sadly omitted. When you come to a choice between the left and right doorway, one side includes an animal cage scene while the other side leads to an empty hallway with uneventful framed holes on the side. But it does lead you to the same secret bar like last year. Oddly enough towards the end of the night, guests were being directly guided to the secret bar for unknown reasons.

Intrepid

Guests board the Intrepid Express with non-stop service to Hell! Appears to be unchanged from last year. But still provides some of the best scenes as spirits follow you down train interiors, lively graveyard, outdoor church, green laser bog, and candle-lit corridors.

You can’t go wrong with the Iron Master bellowing out his hateful monologue in the finale.

Lullaby

Sneak by Scary Mary’s nursery, dressing room, and childish games before she taunts you with her teddy bear for extended playtime. This season reversed the directional flow of the footpath and promised a new scene that invoked the feeling of being underwater of the ship’s pool.

The final disappointing result looked more like a spiritual blue laser light that just hovers above your head in a shower-like space. Upon a second try, we did notice a “floating” body in the ceiling with the blue laser touching the edges. The scene may be more effective if the laser moved like a wave or ripple, the “floating” body closer to guests eyesight, smoky bubbles, and possibly a life ring with “Scary” painted in blood-red between the name “Queen Mary” painted on its side. The talent here was top-notch and on their game throughout the evening with their blood-curdling screams and maniacal giggles.

Essentially the same format as last year. A detective has been murdered and we are on the search for the killer. Samuel the Savage may not be too far away.

The most notable change is the exclusion of the show stop at the beginning of the experience with an audio recording explaining the story. Guests still crawl under the bed and turn around in the laundry room. Thankfully an area by the exit is clearly blocked by oil drums so we were not misdirected into the wrong part of the ship like last year.

Feast

The majority is about the same as in past years. You arrive late to your shift aboard the Queen Mary and so must face the wrath of the chef. Escape in meat lockers, ovens, and meat grinders before being served up as the next entree.

The actors attempt to convey that immersive experience, but may indirectly confuse guests on the actual storyline. The best part of this maze is ending in the engine room! Which happens to include a bar and lounge.

Overall

The secret bars must have really worked their magic for Queen Mary last year given the expansion of bar locations this season. If drinking is what you need to get your scare on, then, by all means, go at it. The atmospheric music is absolutely perfect, bringing up the sense of scary danger from around dark corners.

Be sure to find out the times for the stage and Slider show so you don’t miss out. The stages are designed with enough ample viewing that can be appreciated by casual bystanders. The Sinister Swing ride from Neverland Ranch and the 4D movie, Panic, return and remain to be up-charge attractions.

If you’ve been to Queen Mary Dark Harbor before, you have a basic idea of what to expect. But the highlight goes to access in the ocean liner’s engine room in all its glory. It’ll be amongst one of the more memorable experiences from a maze inside the ship alongside being able to view the underwater propeller. So weigh anchor and set a course to Dark Harbor on select nights from now until November 2, 2019!

Knott’s Scary Farm 2019 is Fun And A Scary Good Time

The fog has rolled in once again for Knott’s Scary Farm. The 2019 season brings with it two all-new scare mazes and a brand new improv show…with puppets!

New Scare Mazes

The scare mazes from this annual Halloween tradition keeps seeing the quality of work escalates every year with more details and visual scares to dazzle your senses. While “Wax Works” replaces the long-standing “Trick-or-Treat” maze, “Origins: The Curse of Calico” replaces “The Red Barn”, respectfully.

Wax Works

Bloodcurdling screams echo through the halls of the wax museum. Dare to enter to help victims before they become a permanent part of the collection, or you could be next. Someone could be hiding amongst the set pieces that recreate famous artworks. A boiler room prepares to make old bodies into new bodies. Melting wax drips down from dimly-lit candles. If you’ve seen 1953 or 2005’s “House of Wax” movies, you’ll get a general idea. A scary walk-through with gory visuals and foreboding lighting. Wax Works will surely melt any horror fan’s heart.

Origins: The Curse of Calico

Discover the birth of legendary Ghost Town monsters. This is by far the best use of the Wilderness Dance Hall this space has seen in a very long time. Even with past treasures like “The Doll Factory”, “Pinocchio’s Revenge”, and “The Red Barn”, the pathway here feels fresh and not just a copy and paste of overlays on top of previous layouts. There is also enough visuals to distract you for a sneaky scare from an actor. Long-time fans may recognize an outdoor scene may be reminiscent of a scene from a previous maze called “The Gunslinger’s Grave”. Even so, it works and blends so well in this new environment. The Green Witch curses at guests down below her circular flight path, farming tools float in mid-air, and giant hands reaching for your soul. One unfortunate hiccup has been the misconception of the live Catawampus legend mistaken as “Groot” from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Returning Scare Mazes

Many from previous seasons have made their glorious returns with some minor enhancements to maintain interest. “Dark Ride” has a new exit through the gift shop scene. But the space given seems more like an after-thought and most people are not going to notice as they exit the maze. “Dark Entities” has added more gore and alien debris in the dark corridors.

“The Depths” brings in an elevator shaft element to simulate descending deep in the earth’s core. “Pumpkin Eater” and ” Paranormal Inc” seem to be closely intact from last year. “Shadow Lands” and “Special Ops: Infected” will officially make 2019 its last season of operation. So if you really like your samurai demons and dispensing headshots to a hoard of zombies, this will be the year to come to Knott’s Scary Farm.

Scary Farm Shows

The Hanging

This annual parody show reflecting on the past year’s pop culture events has always had its ups and downs. Will the new twist on this show that connects The Hanging with Ghost Town and “Origins: The Curse of Calico” in its own universe work? Not quite. The show begins with a story background of witch-hunting in Calico. Then the Lawman and Hangman are brought up next to be hung by the necks. The rest of the story becomes muddled with disconnected random antics and celebrity cameos. The finale was so quietly passive, attendees were unsure if the show had concluded or not and slowly dispersed. There were plenty of Disney gags, good ones too. There were moments that matched pretty well such as Elton John and The Lion King and then there’s Captain Marvel with Shazam. In the end, the show provides and couple giggles, but is not very memorable.

Brian Henson presents Puppet Up – Uncensored

This outrageous show features a combination of improvisational comedy and the magic of puppetry performed by world-class comedian puppeteers from The Jim Henson Company. Personally, I was amazed and floored that this was even considered a possibility to have at a place like Knott’s Scary Farm. But at the same time, appropriately exciting to have it at the Charles Schultz Theatre.

Normally, when this show plays The Jim Henson Company in Hollywood, tickets instantly sell-out. So for those of you taking advantage of the Scary Farm Season Pass, definitely go back to this show as often as you can to see what kind of show you’ll get. I just hope it doesn’t repeat the improv group from last year where the same situations, slides, and clips are used each night even though they are all still respectfully different shows. Puppet Up seems like they will bring their A-game every night and keep everyone entertained with their brand of puppet humor. It’s refreshing to see live-special effects of puppeteers playing with the camera yet allowing the audience to see how the magic is made as if you were in a closed puppet soundstage.

Conjurers: Magic and Mirth

Magic acts return to the Birdcage Theatre to amaze guests with illusions, comedy, and tricks. Check back to see who is performing the night of your visit. This show may be skipped if you are on a tight schedule.

Overall

A scary and fruitful evening to be had with the season’s lineup. Enough new offerings to keep repeat visitors entertained. And there is enough of the oldie but goodie for fans to enjoy their favorite experiences once more. If there is one show to try out, that would easily go to Puppet Up. And we hope they make another return for 2020.
