SUPERGIRL Season 2 Blu-Ray Review

Supergirl was one of the best shows of CBS’ 2016 slate, offering a fun, bright, hopeful take on the superhero genre. But with only so-so ratings, the series faced a rather bleak future. But when CBS cancelled the series, thankfully WB decided to move the series to their own network, The CW, bringing us a brand new season of Supergirl. And boy are we glad they did, because Supergirl season two is a big step up for it’s freshman season in almost every regard. Instead of falling into a sophomore slump, the series managed to find its feet, becoming one of the best shows on the CW.

Now Supergirl Season Two comes to blu-ray, courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in Supergirl: The Complete Second Season. The new four disc set features all twenty two episodes of the show’s second season, and a handful of bonus features that are sure to put a smile on the face’s of fans. So what exactly do you have in store for Supergirl: The Complete Second Season? Check it out:

“Having left the safety of being Cat Grant’s assistant at Catco Worldwide Media in order to figure out what she really wants to do, Kara Danvers continues to work with Hank Henshaw aka Martian Manhunter and her adoptive sister Alex at the DEO as Supergirl – protecting the citizens of National City and searching for her missing father Jeremiah  and the secret research lab Cadmus. Along the way, she will team up with her Kryptonian cousin Kal El – aka Superman  – to battle new DC Super-Villains both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, as she strives to balance her personal life with friends/allies James Olsen, Winn Schott and more with her busy life as a new Super Hero in Supergirl Season Two.”

Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, you’d be right. Supergirl: The Complete Second Season is a lot of fun, and this set brings all that home to new and old fans alike. While the move to the CW could have been cause for concern for some, the show actually flourished on its move, embracing everything that made the first season so successful, while also forging new life for itself along the way. Though having Cat Grant missing for most of the season is a bit of a bummer, you can’t help but love as the series shifts focus to more of Kara’s friends and family in the series. In particular, giving Chyler Leigh’s Alex her own story about accepting herself for who she is is one of the best stories in the second season. Between that, and Jimmy taking on his own vigilante mantle with the help of Winn, Supergirl Season 2 finds a story for everyone. It’s great to have the characters fleshed out in this way, and the series really put focus on making sure everyone got their due by the season’s end.

But, we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Tyler Hoechlin’s turn as Superman. Many worried that Hoechlin either wouldn’t be able to carry the mantle of The Last Son of Krypton, or that he’d overshadow Melissa’s Supergirl. Neither could be farther from the truth, as Hoechlin brings the bumbling, lovable Superman that Christopher Reeves iteration of the character brilliantly to life here. Not only that, but he’s a perfect addition to the series in his guest stint, and plays off Melissa Benoist perfectly. The two compliment each other so well, and Superman ends up making Supergirl a stronger character without overshadowing her. Of course, as mentioned as well, Benoist is still wonderfully endearing as Kara. She really makes her Supergirl both relatable, as well as fun, and you can’t help but love her. This show lives or dies on if you buy into her as Supergirl, and Benoist hasn’t missed a beat.

Supergirl: The Complete Second is a great set, but there is one small aside that needs to be talked about. The CW had a four way crossover this season between Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, but Warner Bros. has oddly only included the very first episode of the crossover, “Medusa”, in the set. It’s an odd choice, as Flash showing up at the end will have no pay off if you’re watching the series through. It’s also missing the second episode of the series’ crossover with The Flash, “Duet”, which takes place immediately after “Star-Crossed”. This seems like a major oversight, and could lead to a lot of frustration for those looking to see the entirety of the storylines play out.

The set does feature a handful of special features though, which are as follows:

  • Supergirl: 2016 Comic Con Panel: The one thing all the CW shows have in common is you can watch their Comic Con panels from 2016, which is great fun. It’s always great to hear the actors talk about their series, share behind the scenes stories, and tease the newest seasons. Fans won’t want to miss this.
  • Supergirl: Did You Know? – Facts for Fans: This is a simple little featurette that has the cast and crew revealing facts and trivia about the series. Fans will get a bit of a closer look into the show, which is sure to delight them.
  • Supergirl: Aliens Among Us: Maybe the most interesting feature in the set, this takes you on a dive down into the visual effects work done on the series to bring the aliens to life. It’s a great feature that really makes you appreciate the work being done to make Supergirl look as great as it does.
  • A Conversation with Andrew Kreisberg and Kevin Smith: This will probably go down as one of the most informative and fun features in the entire DC blu collection. Fans will get a chance to hear Andrew Kreisberg and Kevin Smith talk about how they’ve gotten to bring both Supergirl and The Flash to life on each respective series. It’s a fun little feature that fans are sure to enjoy.

Supergirl: The Complete Second Season is a great blu-ray collection that both new fans and old alike will have fun with. The set has a handful of fun special features, though the lack of the full crossover events does feel like a massive oversight. Still, the season is a lot of fun, and Season Two is a step up from an already very good Season One. Melissa Benoist continues to shine as Supergirl, and she’s surrounded by an excellent cast that help make the show continually fun to watch. This set comes recommended.

Blu Ray Review: ‘The Lion King’ Walt Disney Signature Edition

The Disney Vault is home to some of the most iconic works of animation and storytelling; with films that inspire and live on past their releases into the hearts and minds of families the world over.

For many, childhood is defined by the family’s Disney movie collection. Though that collection looks much different now than years of old, it is still a lasting tradition many hold dear. Now, in an era of digital content and online features, Disney is continuing to share their iconic films with a new generation.

Re releases of many of those films are coming out for an encore performance in the Walt Disney Signature Collection. Starting with the film that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the latest collection line has been a mix of both classic and modern animation. Though titled and inspired by Walt’s personal touch and signature, not all the films in the series have his direct involvement. Very similar to the Diamond and Platinum Editions, this series has a heavy focus on more of the modern era of Disney.

Their latest release, The Lion King, will mark the fourth major release of the film. Originally released under the “Masterpiece” series on VHS, the film has come a long way. Each set builds upon the first, bringing a mix of similar features, along with a new set of gems and footage that have never been seen.

Announced at this year’s Lion King panel at the D23 Expo, this series is fully available digitally and in stores with a huge list of features that cover behind the scenes, cast and crew interviews, music videos, and much more. For a full features list, please scroll down to the bottom of the article. There’s definitely a lot to filter through. For those who have one the previous releases of the film, there are quite a few reminders of sets past.

What makes The Lion King sets stand out are their ability to instill a warm sense of nostalgia. Each iteration has something that is just as memorable as the film itself. Rewinding, literally, you get a sneak peek at Disney’s other major release of that year, Pocahontas. Along with the VHS’ scene trailer, you also received a very heart felt and cheesy advertisement for Walt Disney World featuring Larry and his older brother going over tips and advice for his first trip to the Magic Kingdom.

The film’s DVD release came with the Platinum Edition, which brought us a very unique menu with a ton of features not available during the VHS era. The set also had fun mini games along with a virtual safari with Timon and Pumbaa.

One of the most memorable additions was the “Morning Report”. Originally in the Broadway production of The Lion King, the song was added in a whole new scene that was incorporated into the “Special Edition” of the film’s DVD release. Later removed in the Diamond Edition’s film edit, it was a test done on many of the Platinum line’s films at adding some new musical flair into the original cut. Similar to “Human Again”, which was a part of the Beauty and the Beast release, it was a key feature of the series.

For the Diamond Edition, Disney released the film in 3D, along with a remastered release in theaters to celebrate. Boasting a hefty 4 disc combo pack, along with smaller variations, it’s one of the largest versions on the market. One of the other key components to the set was the “Lion King Blooper Reel”, which can also be found on the new Signature Collection’s digital version.

The Signature Collection will add to the tradition with the “Recording Sessions”, which is an amazing look into the great voice acting done by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Whoopi Goldberg, and so many more. Secondly, the new set also comes with an updated sing along version, archive footage, and more in depth looks at concept art. Overall, the set is a great way to add the film to your home collection or Disney Movies Anywhere lineup. Just like the sets of Lion King Past, this one does a great job at bringing something new to the table, while keeping some of the core features alive from before.

Here’s an up close look at the set’s key features:

  • Updated and New Sing-Along Version
  • The Recording Sessions – A special look into the work of all who helped bring life to the characters of the Lion King. Footage Intro by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.
  • Nathan and Matthew: The Extended Lion King Conversation – Nathan Lane (Timon) and Matthew Broderick (Simba) speak about their experiences with The Lion King and remember the impact the film had on their own lives.
  • Inside the Story Room – Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff present archival footage of five original pitches for the story.
  • Audio Commentary – Producer Don Hahn and co-directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff discuss the film during key sequences and moments.
  • Visualizing a Villain – Artist David Garibaldi paints and dances with a core ensemble during Scar’s “Be Prepared” sequence in a very interesting way.
  • Circle of Life – A look at the film’s iconic opening sequence and the colors and power that helped make the scene so memorable.
  • Hakuna Matata – Previewed at the D23 Expo, a special look into the pitch for the film’s pivotal song.
  • Rafiki and Reflecting Pool – Looking hard at one of the film’s stable “pillars” and emotional moments.
  • Simba & Nala – Story meetings about what helped shape the title characters.
  • Simba Takes Nala Out to Play – A closer look at some elements that did not make it into the final cut.
  • Music & More – Musical additions that include the following songs
  • “Circle of Life”
  • “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”
  • “Hakuna Matata”
  • “Be Prepared”
  • “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”
  • Galleries
  • Visual Development
  • Storyboards
  • Backgrounds & Layouts
  • Character Design
  • Digital Only (Classic DVD Features)

There’s plenty to keep you entertained! If that’s not enough, check out this year’s exclusive “Celebration of the Animated Classic” panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim below.

The Legacy of A Goofy Movie Lives On at the El Capitan

When A Goofy Movie debuted in 1995, nobody could imagine that it would become one of the most beloved, revered, and celebrated Disney animated films of the generation. Going up against blockbusters like The Lion King, Pocahontas, and Beauty and the Beast, the film had surpassed expectations and has now generated a loyal following that has spanned two decades.

To help celebrate, The El Capitan Theatre has brought the film back for a limited run, starting this past Friday night with a special opening series of surprises that included a live DJ, costume contest, and discussion with some of the film’s creative crew. Lead by famous  film historian, Leonard Maltin, fans had a chance to listen in to the development and execution of the movie.

One of the key themes of the discussion was the surprise and pride from the team on how well A Goofy Movie has endured over time. It was Disney’s first attempt to have one of their major characters carry a full feature. Director, Kevin Lima, shared his excitement and admiration for Bill Farmer’s work to help make the project a huge success.

Bill Farmer surprises fans with a special video message thanking everyone for their support.
Bill Farmer surprises fans with a special video message thanking everyone for their support.

When the concept was first created, Disney executives wanted to make Goofy more realistic. This idea helped spawn the idea of Goofy having a normal voice. Lima, completely disagreeing with the decision, worked with Farmer to create the demo of the “new” Goofy for the team. After seeing the difference, it was clear, Farmer’s Goofy needed the charm, awkwardness, and distinct voice that has made the character a fan favorite for so many years.

Fans cheer as Goofy performs "The Perfect Cast" during the film's screening.

The core of the film, which can be seen in the full discussion below, is the hard work and passion from all that were involved. The crowd agreed, loudly applauding and cheering throughout the entire performance.

After the show, fans got a chance to meet and talk to Lima, who watched the film for the first time since it came out in 95. As people were leaving, he thanked the crowd, took photos, and voiced his amazement on the singing, cheers, and applause heard from the house during the show.

For those who want a chance to share in the magic, A Goofy Movie will be playing from August 25th-September 4th. Max Goof will host a meet and greet before the show starts, who will also show off his dance moves to some of the film’s signature songs.

Meet Max and bust a move before every screening!

With fall closely approaching, The El Capitan will be hosting a lot of fun events that include some spooky traditions. Both Halloween classics, Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas, will be back on the big screen for a very limited engagement. RIVERDALE: The Complete First Season DVD Review

In a small town where life is seemingly perfect, it only takes one crack in the glass to destroy that illusion. For the folks of Riverdale, that moment comes when the dead body of a local teen, Jason Blossom, is discovered. Jason’s death begins the town’s descent into lies and deception, as the seemingly perfect town’s facade unravels. So begins our journey into Riverdale: The Complete First Season, the brand new box set of the CW’s hit adaptation of the Archie comic line. If you’re wondering if you read that wrong, you didn’t. Riverdale is an adaptation of the family friendly comic series featuring Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica, but through the lens of a Twin Peaks murder mystery!

Created by the mind behind Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, Greg Berlanti, along with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, have crafted a stylish and fun murder mystery series that brings new life to Archie and his pals. Riverdale could have easily flown off the rails early on, but thankfully strong writing, and a great cast, makes Riverdale a hit out the gate. While the idea of a grounded and gritty murder mystery set in the town of Riverdale seems like a stretch, it actually ends up being the perfect property to try this with. Much of what fans know of Archie and his gang is here, but it’s a bit updated, a bit more scandalous, and quite a bit darker. But, hey, the Archie gang has been fighting the zombie apocalypse in the comics, so anything is possible with these characters.

Riverdale: The Complete First Season comes home courtesy of Warner Bros., and features all thirteen episodes of the show’s first season. For new comers to the series, buckle up and get ready to binge, because the moment you put the first disc in, you’ll be hooked immediately. Riverdale has one of the best pilots in recent memory, with the show laying the groundwork early on for the twists and turns that it’ll eventually take. It’s hard not to fall in love with the series as it goes along, and over the course of the series thirteen episodes, you fall in love with the cast, the world, and the mystery of it all. The best part of it all is that at thirteen episodes, the show has no chance for filler episodes, and instead is breakneck in pace from it’s opening moments to the finale’s shocking ending. This is, by no exaggeration, one of the best inaugural seasons of TV in recent memory, and we’re lucky to have it.

The thing that really makes Riverdale special is its cast. From Trevor Stines, our victim Jason Blossom, to KJ Apa, our All-American Archie, Lili Reinhart as the girl next Betty, Camila Mendes as the mysterious Veronica, Cole Sprouse as the reclusive Jughead, and Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, each plays a specific part in the show’s narrative and build. Without them, the show wouldn’t work nearly as well as it does. Each brings their characters to life in vivid and unique ways, with each character having specific ticks and mannerisms that become calling cards for them. In particular, Cole Sprouse’s sardonic Jughead is one of the show’s bright spots, while also being our eyes into the world. Jughead is the show’s narrator, so we have to trust in him that what we’re seeing is the truth, and not some form of it. Sprouse delivers that in aces, and it’s hard not to love him in the role.

Of course, no DVD set is complete without special features. Riverdale comes with a handful of features that are sure to make fans happy. They are as follows:

  • Riverdale 2016 Comic-Con Panel
    – The cast and crew visit Comic-Con to tout the show before the first season launch, previewing the series to the Ballroom 20 crowd.
  • Gag Reel
    – No special features set is complete without a gag reel. Relive some of the best comic moments behind the scenes of the series, which you’re going to wish was longer.
  • Riverdale: The Ultimate Sin
-Dive into the making of the show’s production, and how the discovery of Jason Blossom changes Riverdale forever.
  • These Are the Moments I Remember
    – Relive Archie, Veronica, and The Pussycats as they performed together in the season, now as a special feature!

Riverdale is, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding first seasons of TV we’ve had in sometime, so it’s not surprise that Riverdale: The Complete First Season is worth the pick up. The set has a handful of fun special features, but most importantly, it features all thirteen episodes of the show’s inaugural season. With a fantastic cast, a great story, and a helluva mystery, Riverdale will grab you from its opening moments, and then won’t let go until the closing moments. When it’s all over, you’re going to be begging for season two to begin right away. Riverdale: The Complete First Season comes highly recommended.

Filmmaker Eli Roth Makes His Commercial Directorial Debut for Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” 2017

This year, filmmaker Eli Roth – acclaimed director of blockbuster horror films such as Hostel and Cabin Fever – makes his commercial directorial debut with Universal Studios’ new “Halloween Horror Nights” television spot, entitled “The Mourning After.”

With Roth’s creative direction and filmmaking expertise, the compelling 30-second commercial becomes one of the most cinematic, horror-film-inspired, “Halloween Horror Nights” commercials ever created.  “The Mourning After” spot follows a group of friends as they attend an unusual Halloween costume party and unfolds with a series of suspenseful twists and turns that begs for more.

Viewers will see an array of hidden references woven throughout the spot that pay tribute to the horror films and television-themed mazes guests will encounter at this year’s “Halloween Horror Nights” events.  These include FX’s critically-acclaimed, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning television series, “American Horror Story,” Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror film, The Shining and the upcoming SAW: The Games of Jigsaw movie.

Roth is a long-time fan of “Halloween Horror Nights” and has previously served as a creative consultant for the event, including a Hostel-inspired maze.  He said the commercial gave him the opportunity to combine a love of horror films with how those films are brought to life within “Halloween Horror Nights.”

“I first got involved with ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ as a fan – I felt that I was in a horror movie and I didn’t want it to end,” said Roth. “For this spot, I wanted to pay homage to these brilliant and scary films, and yet put my own spin on it.”

Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” is the ultimate Halloween event. For more than 20 years, guests from around the world have visited Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood and Orlando to become victims inside their own horror film. The streets of each coast’s event are transformed into highly-themed scare zones where menacing “scare-actors” lunge from every darkened corner. Multiple movie-quality haunted houses are erected throughout the event, based on everything from iconic slasher films to hit horror television series to haunting original stories.

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 2 Blu-ray Review

Last year, the CW introduced their third show in their ever expanding Arrowverse, Legends of Tomorrow. The show took many of the popular supporting characters from both Arrow and Flash, including The Atom, Captain Cold, Heatwave, Sarah Lance, and Firestorm, bringing them together into one show. Led by Captain Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), the new group of heroes and villains must band together as they travel through time, trying to fix anomalies in the timelines that threaten to destroy our existence. Through the show’s first season, the cast was always fun, but the show had a hard time landing its footing, giving us a fun, but at times disjointed first season.

Thankfully, Legends of Tomorrow season 2 is not only a step up from the first season in almost every regard, but it quickly became the best show in the ever expanding Arrowverse. What the show’s creators Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg did so well with season was shake up the status quo they’d set up in the first season. Rip Hunter is gone, leaving the team a bit broken, but finding their true purpose without him. With the addition of two new members, it gave the new season new life.

It’s not just the status quo shake up that makes this second season of Legends of Tomorrow so fun though. No, the best thing about this season is that the Legends are going up against a group of really fun, likable villains, and they’re all characters we’ve known from the other shows! Malcolm Merlin, Damian Darhk, and Reverse Flash come together as the Legion of Doom, who are continually a thorn in the side of the Legends. You can’t help but love every time the Legion is together on screen, because their presence is just so much fun. John Barrowman, Neal McDonough, and
Matt Letscher have amazing chemistry, and you can tell they’re having a blast working together, throwing witty one liners and jabs at each other at every turn. The Legion gives the show a great villain, and a much needed shot of adrenaline that makes this the strongest season of Legends of Tomorrow yet.

The new blu-ray collection of the complete second season of Legends of Tomorrow does the show justice as well. The set features has all 17 episodes of the series’ run, as well as a handful of bonus features. Though, there is one odd thing that should be mentioned. Every year, the CW does a crossover event across all the Arrowverse shows, and this season set doesn’t feature all the episodes from the Invasion event. So if you aren’t caught up with Supergirl, The Flash, or Arrow, the crossover episode is going to feel very jarring for the viewer. Especially considering that this was the final episode in the four part crossover. It’s a weird choice that doesn’t make a lot of sense, and something that should be rectified on season sets moving forward.

The Legends of Tomorrow blu-ray features four special features, which are light, but will give fans a good eye into the series. They include:

  • DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: 2016 Comic-Con Panel
  • Allied: The Invasion Complex (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow)
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag-Reel

The best feature on the set is easily the Comic-Con 2016 panel, which has the cast and crew previewing the new season, as well as generally having a good time on stage with each other. It’s a fun addition to the set that will leave fans happy. Also, the gag reel is something fans will definitely want to check out, because this cast is has so much fun on set, so the hilarity that comes from that when people mess up on set is hilarious to watch unravel. There’s also a handful of deleted scenes that are great for those who want to get a little more from the series, but none of them are truly noteworthy.

Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Second season is probably the best Arrowverse show on the CW right now, and the new blu-ray release is great for fans and collectors. The Invasion quibble aside, this set is definitely worth a pick up. If you’re a fan of time travel, or superheroes, this is definitely going to be up your ally. Recommended.

DEATH NOTE Movie Review

It’s frustrating when an adaptation of great material, like translating a book to film, fails to really connect with the source it’s based on. When key parts of a story are changed, sometimes it works, but unfortunately many times it backfires. Adam Wingard’s new Netflix adaptation of Death Note, based on the Japanese manga of the same name, falls into that rocky world of trying to adapt material for a new audience. Unfortunately in the process it loses much of what made the story, in all its various forms of media over the years, actually work. Instead, the film feels like a 1980’s horror/thriller that doesn’t quite come together thanks to odd tonal shifts, and a weak script that never really delves enough into the morality of the material it’s playing with.

For those unfamiliar with the material, it’s about a high schooler named Light (Nat Wolff) who ends up with a Death Note. The Death Note can be used to kill anyone whose name is put inside it. Aided by his Death god named Ryuk (Willem Dafoe), Light decides to name himself Kira, and begin killing people across the world. But when Light goes too far, a man named L (Lakeith Stanfield) becomes bent on catching the mysterious Kira. Caught in a cat and mouse game of life and death, Light now must try to outsmart one of the world’s best detectives in the hope of keeping his secret hidden.

This is the kind of material that begs to question the morality of what being able to murder in this way could do, not just to the user, but to the world at large. While the film tries at times to do that, it unfortunately seems more obsessed with the damage the Death Note can cause. It’s that change that really plays against the film, as well as Light himself. One of the odd things about the film is that Light reveals his power almost immediately to a girl he’s crushing on in school, Mia Sutton (Margaret Qualley), and she becomes obsessed with the power he possesses. This immediately takes away from Light solely making the decision to murder these people, therefore taking away the full blame of his actions. This makes the moments later in the film where he’s grappling with his actions feel worthless, because he’s never really showed any sort of regret before. Instead, he was just a horny teenager who wanted the girl, and tried to show off by killing people.

In a lot of ways, it seems like those behind the film are more bent on tackling this as a remake of Natural Born Killers, and less as an adaptation of Death Note. While it definitely bares some resemblance to the source material, the biggest problem is that the core relationships in the film don’t quite work. As previously mentioned, it feels like the relationship between Light and Mia is based off Natural Born Killers, which is just odd. It takes away Light’s sole responsibility for the chaos he’s causing as Kira. But that’s not the only broken relationship in the film, as it’s really Light and Ryuk’s relationship that doesn’t work at all. In fact, Ryuk really doesn’t serve any purpose to the film, and feels completely out of place in the world they created. It’s frustrating, because Dafoe is fantastic in the role, but with no bigger purpose in the film, it just feels like a wasted opportunity for stunt casting. Light is warned, through the book, not to trust Ryuk, but they never do much with it. There’s one moment where Light threatens to try and kill him, but it’s never touched on again, and then Ryuk basically disappears until the third act.

Unfortunately, a lot of what is talked about above that is really the biggest problem overall with the film. It really doesn’t work in any discernible way because the film is trying to do too many things. L is great, and Lakeith Stanfield plays him very well, but much of his part feels too over the top for the film it’s in. There’s a very 1980’s horror/thriller vibe underneath, so with L being very over the top and exaggerated, it doesn’t quite work. We’re also led to believe that L is an incredible detective, and there’s moments it feels like he might be, but we’re never with him enough to explore it. There’s also the issue of Light’s father, James Turner, who is played by the great Shea Whigham. Whigham is superb in his role, but the problem is, as a great cop helping L on the case to catch Kira, he should really be able to figure out early on that Light is the man he’s trying to catch. The movie does mock that at one point, thankfully, but up until that moment it’s amazing that James hasn’t figured out his son is the killer.

While the film doesn’t really come together, it is at least stylishly directed by Adam Wingard, and for those familiar with his work, his personal flourishes are all over it. From the bright neon colors to the synthesizer score, this is clearly a Wingard film. There’s moments throughout that feel very much like his film The Guest, and those are some of the strongest moments in the film. But the script is just so scatterbrained throughout that no amount of flair and fun can save the movie from imploding on itself. No matter how great it looks, the story just bottoms out quick, and we’re left with a mostly hollow shell.

Death Note should have been an easy home run for Netflix, but despite some great performances, and a strong direction, the movie doesn’t come together as a full experience. Instead of being a great adaptation of fantastic material, we’re given a far too swiftly paced film that tries to jam way too much into a ninety minute run time. On top of that, the film really doesn’t feel like delving into the relationships of the characters, or the morality involved in the use of the Death Note. What could have been a dark, twisted take on the abuse of power instead feels like a cheap ripoff of a Final Destination film, with nothing really to say. What a bummer, because this could have been something very special.
