‘An American In Paris’ is Simply a Must See

The 2015 Tony Award®-winning musical AN AMERICAN IN PARIS lands at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa and is surely not to be missed!  Based on the Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron’s 1951 classic film by the same name, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS lives up to the romanticism of its film counterpart and the popularity of now pop-culture phenomenon La La Land. This new onstage musical cherishes the artistic, abstract vision from musical films golden-age beefing it up with a score that is nothing short of enlivening, and majestic award-winning choreography that will have everyone fluttering to their cars with joy.  AN AMERICAN IN PARIS will wow you in every aspect imaginable and remind you of the glory that is onstage live musicals. Simple put – it’s wonderful, it’s marvelous, it’s perfect!

The show opens in Paris at the end of Wold War II and introduced by a semi-corky American veteran, Adam Hochberg (ETAI BENSION), that has stayed in the City of Lights pursuing a career in composing his own shows.  After some cleverly orchestrated montages and illustrated set transformations, the audience is met with another American soldier, Jerry Mulligan (McGEE MADDOX and alternate RYAN STEELE), that decides to stick around after the war. Jerry later runs into Adam at a cafe who introduces him into his life as a composer. It’s here when the two are met with the girl of the story; a stunning, beautifully talented French ballerina with that goes by the name Lise Dassin (SARA ESTY).

The two men quickly fall head over heals for Lise with Jerry practically chasing after her with a Gene Kelly-like confidence and overdone wooing. Both fail to really leave their mark. As the story progresses the audience is introduced to gentlemen number three, Henri Baurel (NICK SPANGLER), the son of wealthy French industrialists who secretly desires to be an entertainer against his parents wishes. Henri is quickly discovered to be Lise’s boyfriend, but perhaps not the one for her.  The three continue their campaign to court the young lady unbeknownst to each others desires for the same woman.  With many obstacles in the way including another woman interested in Jerry, the three musketeers battle it out in their own way discovering their own passions and what’s really important life.

Audiences on opening night were treated to RYAN STEELE in the role of Jerry Mulligan. Steele has been apart of Newsies, Matilda, West Side Story, and Billy Elliot on Broadway… and while his vocal performance is on par and energy at an eleven, it’s his dance-work that will astound you. His demeanor has a bit of flamboyance that may seem a bit off keen for the role, but it truly comes down to his footwork and energetic ballet medleys that sets this show above all the rest.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is a fitting introduction to the world of ballet as for myself being less than interested in most ballets found myself in shear awe of the pure magic from each dance number.  There are plenty of highlights from each characters performance as well within most of the music numbers, but it’s a 13-minute ballet ballad between Jerry and Lise that will win over any theatergoer.  There is no better moment had onstage than seeing these two in this near-interpretive dance that reminds us of those random film stage sequences of iconic MGM musicals. This captivating piece is performed with such grace and style alongside a masterfully orchestrated number that serenades the audience into amazement and warrants its very own standing ovation.

George and Ira Gershwin’s music and lyrics combined with brilliant orchestrations are instrumental to the success for this musical, pun intended.  The show thrives from nostalgic pieces that are reminiscent of musicals of yesteryear revitalizing that little feeling inside which for moment… for just that brief moment, makes you forget of all your worries and troubles.  This right here is the essence of the entire musical.

Much of Adam’s challenges in his song writing within the show come from his inability to understand the meaning behind much of the pomp and circumstance within the music of the era. The show tunes of those times and nightclub entertainment numbers are all there to brighten everyones day helping them forget about of the aforementioned problems.  This realization helps Adam create his own musical masterpiece.

As wonderful as it is to hear some of the well-known songs from the movie counterpart such as “I Got Rhythm” and some instrumental preludes, the show has some of the most creative, intricate set designs I’ve ever seen. While most projection based backdrops are known to irritate me, Bob Crowley’s set design is nothing short from spectacular. Simplistic at times to whimsical, grand and unique in others, Crowley was able to create a living, breathing set design with an abstract flair that never feels to be lacking from detail. It’s quite fun to watch each scene transform yet allow the choreography and music help tell the story.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS falls nothing short of astonishing. While the footwork remains the star, every element of the show was melded well with each other lending to a near flawless, unique and ultimately refreshing musical. The music, dancing and vocal styling remain to feel so familiar yet so new, and while it pains me to make a comparison to this, it’s what has lead to much of the success of La La Land. It’s no wonder that one of the most popular movies of 2016 was sparked so from this musical, singing around a park bench and all. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS comes with a longer runtime but is something I never wanted to end. This mesmerizing production is simply wonderful. C’est merveilleux.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts until May 7th.

30 Things to Know About Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

IMG 5355
IMG 5355

In 2014, James Gunn surprised audiences and critics alike with Guardians of the Galaxy, a film on the outskirts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that saw an unlikely bang of misfits come together to save the galaxy from an unstoppable threat. The film surpassed expectations on every level (as I can attest in my own review from that year), had a platinum selling album that reintroduced a new generation to classic rock, and ended up being not just one of the most beloved films of the year, but one of the most beloved comic book films ever released. It’s mix of humor, action, science fiction, and a dash of director James Gunn, made the film feel like something completely new, and was a more than welcome pallet cleanser to the comic book films we’d gotten.

Three years later, and we’re on the brink of James Gunn’s second film in his now announced trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which sees the Guardians facing a brand new threat from a very unexpected placed. The film ups the stakes, brings together new characters, including Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet, as well as bringing back some fan favorites for this epic space sequel. This is a labor of love for Gunn and his team, which was incredibly apparent at the press junket for the film.

This week, in anticipation of the new sequel, I had the chance to sit down with the cast and crew of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and listen to them talk about their experience making the film, and pulled some really cool tidbits of information from them concerning the film, their time on set, and even some hints at what’s to come in the future for this universe. There may be some mild spoilers ahead, but for those really wanting to get some really fun behind the scenes info on this film,

  • Chris Pratt said his initial thoughts when meeting Kurt Russell were to not “geek out” about him. But he knew it would be better to be honest and geek out about it than pretending he wasn’t a fan, and it made working together that much better. He says that now they’re not fans of each other, but peers of each other.
  • For James Gunn, making the sequel wasn’t harder, because now he knew an audience wanted to spend time with these characters.
  • Gunn also set out to make sure that the sequel wasn’t just the first film all over again, and they tried as hard as possible to stay away from anything that felt too similar, and let this be its own film.
  • Michael Rooker joked that Pratt’s longer shirtless scene was by his request. Gunn then added, jokingly, that it was the only mandatory thing Kevin Feige said MUST be in the movie.
  • Rooker also joked that his shirtless scene was great because he realized he didn’t need to be in shape for it, as his character wouldn’t be in shape, which led him to pigging out after working out extensively for that scene.
  • Originally Kurt Russell wasn’t sure if he should join the film. He loved the first, and didn’t want to join a film that was less well received, and didn’t want to be the reason people didn’t like the movie.
  • Russell also says that his younger version of his character in the prologue was mostly make up, with very little CG. Something that surprised even the CG artists working on the film.
  • For Russell, he said that he really has a special relationship with Disney, but he knew even though with that previous relationship, he couldn’t just land the role in Ego. But he was lucky to run into a team he meshed with and wanted to work with him as badly as he wanted to work with them.
  • James Gunn is still surprised by how much freedom that Kevin Feige gives him with his movies, but they always seem to be on the same page. They only had one disagreement on this film, and they said it’s such a small thing, that no one will possibly figure out what it is. (Gunn than joked that it was having Yondu in the film, which Rooker then quipped, “Thanks for kicking his ass for adding me,” to Kevin.)
  • Yondu’s Mary Poppins quip in the film has several variations to Gunn, including having Rooker using every swear word imaginable for the scene.
  • Rooker also joked that working with Pratt is easy on set, because he doesn’t find him funny at all, so he never has a hard time keeping a straight face.
  • Both Kevin and James thought adding easter eggs, and the possibilities of exploring the original Guardians of the Galaxy characters, was a great idea. They loved adding them.
  • Stallone said that joining this world was a completely new experience, but he loved being a part of it. He joked that he was whipped with wet tails for initiation.
  • Stallone also joked he gave his salary back because Kevin got him out of his house and away from his three daughters, and that was enough for him to take the role.
  • Sean Gunn, who is Rocket’s stand in on set, had a fun, yet strange time playing both Rocket and his Kraglin character.
  • Zoe Saldana says Sean is the perfect reference for Bradley voicing Rocket, and that he really is what gives Rocket his life, and Bradley then colors within the lines.
  • Feige also added that Sean has been working one another one of the recent Marvel films as Rocket, and he can’t wait for people to see Rocket’s interactions with the new characters. He added that Sean is a big part of the process, and everyone loves working with him.
  • For Sylvester Stallone, he says that Joseph Campbell and the idea of mythology is a big deal to him, and that the mythology of the Guardians drew him to the project. He loved going off world, and not being as grounded as his previous roles kept him.
  • That mythology also played a part in why Stallone wanted to join for another reason: He wanted to be a part of this generation’s mythology, and he believe it’ll be the next generations as well. He’s impressed by the storytelling that Gunn and Feige are doing at Marvel.
  • Stallone wouldn’t say how many films he’s signed on for, and jokes that he’ll believe it when he sees it about returning for the sequels.
  • Stallone also joked that he lobbied to not work with Kurt Russell, that he can’t stand him, killing a Tango and Cash reunion.
  • Sean was happy to come back just to work with the cast again, and have a bigger part both as Kraglin, and as Rocket. He loves being with this group of people, and says it’s like a big family.
  • Dave and Drax couldn’t be more different. Drax is so outlandish, yet Dave is very quiet and keeps to himself. It makes some of his more outlandish moments harder, but Gunn always pushes it out of him.
  • Stallone says that he didn’t know much about the comics coming in, saying that it gave him a clean slate to work with. He had no preconceived notions of how to play the character.
  • When the panel was asked how they felt about seeing people cosplaying as their characters, Stallone joked he wanted to punch them in the fact, and that it was copy write infringement.
  • When asked what other sci-fi property she wanted to be in, Zoe jumped to Dune, saying she wants to be a part of it.
  • Feige says that the Stan Lee cameo was a fun nod for fans, as well as something he and Gunn thought would be clever, showing that all his cameos were him playing the same character, and bringing information to The Watchers.
  • Karen loves playing Nebula, and she was so excited to explore the dark side of the character, and really exploring her relationship with Gamora this time around. It was only hinted at in the first, and now they’re really jumping into it.
  • Stallone says he’s amazed by the amount of passion, and talent that Gunn and Marvel had to do the film. It was very welcoming for him, which made him really love being a part of the universe.
  • Kevin Feige hints that Howard the Duck, who once again cameos in this film, will be popping up again in another Marvel film. Let the speculation begin!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Tommy Flanagan, Laura Haddock, with Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russell, opens May 5, 2017.

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand. “

Hanging Out in Huntington Beach, California

Huntington Beach is legendary around the world as one of the best surfing spots. It’s waves and beaches are so great, it is also officially known as “Surf City.” But as I learned on a recent getaway, the town is more than just tasty swells and beautiful white sand; it also boasts gourmet restaurants, luxury, ocean-front hotels, great shopping, and tons of California coastal charm.

My visit to Huntington Beach began last week when a friend and I checked into the Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel (www.shorebreakhotel.com), a surfer-chic boutique hotel centrally located in the heart of downtown, across from the iconic pier. Featuring four-star touches and ocean view guestrooms with modern furnishings, the Shorebreak makes a perfect beachfront base camp.

The Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel is a beach-front boutique luxury

Our fourth floor room came with a colorful beach-inspired décor, two queen beds, large TV with two big comfy chairs, office area with desk, a fridge stocked with goodies for purchase, and a spacious bathroom with a shower big enough to wash your surf board. The highlight of the room was the balcony which overlooked town, the Pacific Ocean and the pier.

Once acquainted with the hotel, we went exploring.  Our first stop was lunch across the street at Sancho’s Tacos. Here we filled up on authentic carne asada and chicken tacos, and nachos. We then we walked across Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Hwy) to the pier to check out classic cars at the 17th annual Beach Cruiser Meet.

Located on the Pier and a few nearby streets, the car show was highlighted by incredibly well-maintained “Woodies,” those old wood-paneled wagons made for beach postcards and surf songs. The event also brought scores of immaculate convertibles, VW transporters and other classics.

The annual Beach Cruiser Meet brings out some sweet old cars

After drooling over the cars, we walked a block to the International Surfing Museum (www.surfingmuseum.org), where we examined historic surf boards and memorabilia and  learned about some of the most famous surfers of all time such as George Freeth and Eddie Aikau. The museum also has a life-size recreation of the Silver Surfer from Marvel Comics.

The International Surfing Museum offers great surfing history

From the museum we walked across the street to Huntington Beach Surfboard & Bike Rentals (surfboardandbikerentals.com), where I rented a beach cruiser for the afternoon. It was a gorgeous spring day and the weather was perfect for a ride. With the wind at my back I pedaled to the beach and rode the 10-mile-long paved bike path paralleling the sand. During my trek I passed volleyball players, sunbathers, joggers, and a drum circle. I also enjoyed memorable views of Catalina Island and the historic Huntington Beach Pier.

When I returned to the bike rental shop, I met Sugar, a world champion surfing dog, who was rescued a few years ago from the streets of Oakland. Look her up on Youtube to see some of her amazing moves. When Sugar and her owner Ryan aren’t surfing, they are at the shop to help customers.

Sugar is a champion surfing dog who also works at Huntington Beach Surfboard & Bike Rentals

Back at the Shorebreak Hotel, we joined other hotel guests for the complimentary Wine Hour. The nightly occasions was started by hotel founder Bill Kimpton, who wanted “a gathering place for guests to feel a sense of community and inclusion, and relax at the end of the day.” While sipping local wine, we mingled on the patio and played chess on a giant board.

After Wine Hour we walked a few blocks to Bluegold (dinebluegold.com) for a wonderful dinner, overlooking the ocean. With an open kitchen and an intimate and classy ambiance, the restaurant serves a creative, eclectic mix of California land and sea.

Bluegold serves great champagne and an eclectic mix of California land and sea

Our meal began with warm milk rolls, fresh from the oven, with honey butter and sea salt. With these enjoyed a couple bloody Mary oyster shooters with fried uni chips and a glass of champagne. For the main course I devoured shrimp & crab ravioli with blistered winter beans and brown butter, while my friend had a succulent smoked Kurobuta pork chop with Tokyo turnips and a sweet and spicy tarragon honey sauce. For dessert we split a peanut butter and jelly cheesecake.

In the morning, I walked along the sand until I reached a pedestrian bridge leading to the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach

(www.huntingtonbeach.regency.hyatt.com). At this Spanish-styled, water-front resort I had an soothing 50-minute massage at the hotel’s Pacific Waters Spa. Rated as one of the best spas in Southern California, the 20,000 sq-ft oasis is replete with ponds and trickling fountains. My full-body treatment was rejuvenating and featured a combination of deep and light tissue pressure, along with hot stones.

The Pacific Waters Spa is located in the luxurious Hyatt Regency Resort

I concluded my visit to Huntington Beach with a memorable dinner at SeaSalt Woodfire Grill (www.seasaltwoodfiregrill.com), where the wood fires of Santa Maria meet the fire pits of Huntington Beach. At this hip restaurant, I enjoyed a succulent Pacific Albacore steak, with a side of Brussels sprouts and bacon. While dining, I sipped a cold beer and admired the rustic, BBQ-inspired decor.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Movie Review

GotG4
GotG4

James Gunn’s 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Guardians of the Galaxy, wowed critics and audiences alike, and pulled off what many thought would be impossible: Turning this group of unknown Marvel characters into household names, while simultaneously pushing them into blockbuster status. Now, almost three years later, Gunn and his team have returned, with hopes to win over the audience with a sequel, which as many know, is not an easy feat. Even harder still is finding a way to create a sequel that not only lives up to the first film, but somehow can match it. A near impossible task considering the lightning in a bottle situation that Guardians of the Galaxy is, but Gunn set his sights on success, and has gone full throttle in the second film in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

That full throttle nature is both a blessing and a curse for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which goes down the path of The Empire Strikes Back, which is clearly the film’s biggest influence. In fact, the film is not only structured similarly, but it’s also heavily borrowing from the film’s themes of family, and has an overall darker tone throughout. In some ways, this is one of the film’s biggest strengths, but it’s also creates many of the film’s biggest problems.

While the first Guardians of the Galaxy was very heavily plot driven, with the team on a mission to keep the Infinity Stone away from Ronan the Accuser, the sequel doesn’t really have a plot that thrusts it forward. Instead, the film really doubles down on the characters, using them to be the film’s drive, creating a film that’s much more about the team, and less about the things happening around them. For some, this will be a welcome change to the usual superhero formula. But for others, this is going to come off as an incredibly frustrating experience, because without a real core story, the film sorta just meanders around and does whatever it feels like doing. Of course, this is supposed to be for the betterment of the characters, so you really get to spend time with them, and watch the team continue to grow together, but that’s also mooted by the fact that for much of the film, the team is split up.

This, of course, is so that all the team can shine, as well as giving us time for many of the new characters in the film, but much of the first film’s fun came from the team’s interactions. When the team is together in this film, it’s the strongest the film ever feels, but when they’re split up, much of the film is hindered by it. However, it also opens the door for us to get new relationships between the characters, especially between Rocket and Yondu, which is one of the film’s strongest aspects. That relationship is one of the film’s biggest selling points, and really shines when they’re together. But it’s really Kurt Russell as Ego, Peter’s father, where the film really shines. Russell is fantastic in the film, fitting in naturally with these characters and this world, while also being the ideal choice for Peter Quill’s father. Much of Pratt’s performance as Starlord is reminiscent of Russell’s performance as Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China, so it only made sense to have the man who brought Jack Burton to life be his father within this film.

Thankfully, the character work really is great in the film, and spending time with these characters is always fun. If it wasn’t for the character’s interactions, the first film would not have been nearly as successful as it was. Gunn really loves the characters, and he just wants the audience to spend as much time with them as possible to watch their relationships flourish. It’s a noble endeavor, but it’s too bad the story lacks focus until the third act of the film, which unfortunately suffers from the typical third act issues of many superhero films face, with the impending doom of a planet or galaxy, chaos all around, and only the characters can stop it. The whole thing just feels a little too cliche, especially as many superhero films have tried to move away from this. It’s unfortunate Gunn went this route, because the film seems perfectly set up for a more scaled back and intimate final act that would have fit better overall thematically. The only reason it gets away with it, is the film becomes surprisingly emotional towards the end of the final battle. That emotional push ends up being the film’s strongest overall story and arc, and really gives the film a fantastic finale that feels earned over the two the films.

With the film’s story issues aside, the humor and heart, as mentioned above, is fully intact. Without that, this film wouldn’t really function, which is really the biggest issue here. Throughout, the cast is excellent, the movie is wickedly funny, the action is great, but without a story, it just mulls around with the characters. The film also features what may be one of the strongest openings of any Marvel film, and it’s one that for many, will go down as their favorite part of the film. That opening sets the tone for the film, which really is endlessly fun and entertaining, which is amazing considering the film is also incredibly dark in moments, again pushing The Empire Strikes Back vibe it has from the outset. So much so that one of the film’s third act reveals is upsetting for audiences, as it should be, but never drags the film down. It’s a much needed dark note that pushes our characters to their brink, and strengthens them as characters. All that works, even with the film being light on story, which continues to be the biggest sticking point for this film.

One thing that isn’t a sticking point though is the choice of music Gunn has used for Awesome Mix Vol. 2, the tape Peter’s mother gives him within the film. Much like the first, the soundtrack is almost a character itself within the film, and it many ways, the soundtrack is more important to the film than the first. Every song is not only at the right place at the right time enhancing the scene, but every sound is the DNA of the scene it’s in. Every lyric matches the moments, ever strum of a guitar feels like it was made for this specific film. It’s amazing to that these songs weren’t written for the film, that’s how well used they are, and that’s the biggest compliment Gunn can be paid for what he’s pulled off here.

With more humor, more heart, and more guardians, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 not only matches the first film in many ways, it surpasses it. But in other ways, the film falters, dragging it down. Even with those faults, the movie ends up being not only being incredibly entertaining, but another fantastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn has proven that he not only loves these characters, but he truly understands them. His orchestration of the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is truly a stroke of genius, and it’s great to see Feige giving him to make the film he wants to make. This isn’t a perfect sequel, but it’s still a good film in its own right, and more than worthy of your time.

New Attractions to Be Unveiled This Summer at SeaWorld San Diego

The next generation sea-life experience arrives for this generation at SeaWorld San Diego.

Forging a futuristic vision for animal lovers to experience the dazzling world of creatures beneath the waves that few can ever witness – SeaWorld San Diego will unveil the largest attractions’ debut in its history.

And millions the world over who ponder the ever-changing and largely unexplored underwater universe that envelopes more than 70 percent of the earth, won’t be disappointed.

“What we’ve done is gather some of the world’s most distinctive aquariums, ocean exhibits, and oceanographic exploration experiences and fused them with the latest advances in technology,” said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld’s vice president of theme park experience and design. “The result is what we think is the most unique way to experience the mysterious creatures that dwell in a submerged universe most will never see.”

The three attractions debuting this summer represent the highest level of investment since the world-renowned park’s opening more than half a century ago.

Ocean Explorer will immerse families in an underwater world of deep-sea discovery. This extraordinary new attraction will combine multiple aquariums, exciting rides and digital technologies designed to engage park guests in an experience centered on exploration and adventure.

Check-Out this teaser Video:

Submarine Quest, the attraction’s signature ride, is an interactive adventure intended to encourage guests to explore and act to protect wildlife in the future. This three-minute, digitally enhanced experience boasts the world’s first use of “smart-play” technology enabling riders to guide their mission of oceanic exploration.

Climbing out of their specially designed exploration mini subs, guests will then roam one-of-a-kind aquariums, some featuring 360-degree viewing experiences enabling younger guests to enter a splendid saltwater world without getting wet while being awed by many of the mightiest marine animals on earth. Among those are the rarely seen giant Japanese spider crab, the world’s largest arthropod; dozens of slithering eels lurking in the shadows; and imposing giant Pacific octopuses spying with black-sapphire eyes from their rock-encrusted caves.

Also debuting this summer is the all-new, inspiring Orca Encounter. It represents an important evolution of how SeaWorld guests will experience killer whales. Presented in a documentary-style format featuring a three-story, first-of-its-kind infinity screen, Orca Encounter features state-of-the-art integration of verbal and visual storytelling.

“We are fortunate to be able to share these magnificent creatures,” said Morrow, “their social structures and communication, their physical attributes and hunting skills, and their unique relationship with mankind.”

Orca Encounter combines a live orca presentation in a most natural setting complete with a rugged coastline backdrop featuring towering pines and picturesque waterfalls with an extraordinarily enhanced and augmented digital environment. The result is an astonishing learning experience that will engage guests on an unprecedented educational and inspirational level seen nowhere else in the world.

Capping off SeaWorld San Diego’s spectacular new attractions will be Electric Ocean, the only nighttime experience of its type in the United States. Electric Ocean will transform the entire above-the-ground park to the look of the deep bioluminescent ocean below.

“When the sun goes down, the vibrant colors of the world’s oceans are going to come up,” Morrow said. “Big time.” The entire SeaWorld park under the nighttime stars will be re-imagined as a place where guests will feel like they are actually walking through moving currents of the undulating ocean.

New entertainment showcased in ways never before seen will surround the guests—ranging from a school of neon-like fish passing by as guests stroll through the park to a dance club seemingly pulsating in the midst of life-like florescent coral reefs to exotic shopping opportunities to cirque-like performers in specially outfitted LED suits, to acrobats, to gravity-defying aerialists and futuristic power glide stilt walkers mimicking the movement of darting denizens of the deep.

Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego’s park president said, “We are incredibly excited about bringing our amazing visions of the future to our guests today.

“These extraordinary new attractions not only ratchet up the fun and exciting atmosphere our guests have come to love and expect at SeaWorld, but maintain our company’s focus on animals,” she continued. “We are thrilled to entertain and also inspire current and future generations of people to take action to help protect wild animals and wild places.

During the Star Wars Celebration in Florida earlier this month, Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II will release on November 17, 2017 worldwide. Building upon the foundation of groundbreaking visuals and authenticity of EA’s Star Wars Battlefront, DICE, Motive and Criterion are teaming up to deliver one of the most expansive Star Wars games to date. Star Wars Battlefront II will allow players to experience the untold story of an Imperial elite special forces soldier in an all-new single player campaign. In epic multiplayer battles, players will be able to pilot a First Order TIE fighter through intense dogfights in space, and play as ground troopers or iconic heroes and villains, such as Yoda and Darth Maul, across all three Star Wars eras.

“In Star Wars Battlefront II, we all wanted to really capture the essence of being heroic and how in Star Wars, anyone can become a hero,” says Matt Webster, Executive Producer at Criterion. “Whether that’s playing as an iconic character like Rey or Luke, as a front-line trooper or fighter pilot in epic multiplayer battles, or playing through a new Star Wars story that bridges the gap between Star Wars™: Return of the Jedi™ and Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™, you will become a hero in Star Wars Battlefront II.”

Featuring new characters created by Motive in close partnership with the story group at Lucasfilm, the Star Wars Battlefront II single player campaign will deliver a new exciting story to the Star Wars universe. Taking place in the 30 years between the destruction of Death Star II and through the rise of the First Order, the single player story introduces Iden Versio, the leader of Inferno Squad, an elite special forces unit of the Galactic Empire, who are equally lethal on the ground and in space. In addition to Iden, players will also encounter and play as other iconic Star Wars heroes and villains like Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren during the campaign.

“EA has assembled an incredible set of developers to create a Star Wars gaming experience unlike anything fans have ever experienced,” said Douglas Reilly, Senior Director, Digital & Franchise Management. “Star Wars Battlefront II will offer everything players loved about the last installment, and adds new modes that we know the fans want, including an entirely new story developed in partnership with Lucasfilm.”

“We wanted to create a campaign that told a story we haven’t seen before in Star Wars,” says Mark Thompson, Game Director at Motive Studios. “It was important for us to tell a new authentic story, one that gives players a brand-new perspective. By putting players in the boots of an elite member of the Imperial forces, we can show them what the battle was like from the other side.”

In addition to the all-new single player campaign, the team at DICE is evolving the game’s multiplayer to become the ultimate Star Wars battleground. With modes supporting up to 40 players, Star Wars Battlefront II takes fans through a wide range of iconic locations from all three eras: prequel, classic and new trilogy, including new in-game locations such as Yavin 4’s jungle canopies, the spaceport town of Mos Eisley, and Starkiller Base. Players can choose from an array of land and air vehicles and master their own hero’s journey, with customizable character progression across heroes, villains, troopers and starfighters.

As one of the most requested fan modes, galactic-scale space combat is also brought to life in Star Wars Battlefront II. Criterion, with a deep history of creating some of gaming’s fastest and intuitive vehicles, has built space combat from the ground up with refined handling, weapons, and customization options. Players can drop into the cockpit of the galaxy’s most iconic ships, weave between asteroid fields and fly through imperial dockyards in high stakes dogfights.

Fans who pre-order Star Wars Battlefront II can join the excitement of the theatrical release of Star Wars™: The Last Jedi™, with content inspired by the upcoming film including exclusive* Kylo Ren and Rey themed looks†. Players can also equip both characters with epic ability upgrades in multiplayer. Additionally, when taking the fight to space, players can upgrade to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Millennium Falcon and a new First Order ship.

Players that order the Star Wars Battlefront II: Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition will not only have access to all the Star Wars: The Last Jedi inspired pre-order content, found in Star Wars Battlefront II: The Last Jedi Heroes, but can also dominate the battlefront as the ultimate Star Wars elite trooper. Every trooper class will receive upgrades, delivering superior firepower, deadly weapon modifications and epic combat abilities. Deluxe Edition owners will also get a head start on the battlefront, being able to jump into the game up to three days early.

Star Wars Battlefront II will be available worldwide on November 17th, 2017 on PlayStation®4, Xbox One™, and on Origin for PC. Players looking to get into the game earlier can do so with the Star Wars Battlefront II: Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition starting on November 14th, or through the Play First Trials on EA Access and Origin Access‡ starting November 9th.
