20 Things We Learned from the xXx: Return of Xander Cage Press Junket

On Thursday, January 19, 2017, director D.J. Caruso and the cast of his new film, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the third film in the extreme spy series. Vin Diesel, Deepika Padukone, Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, and many others sat down to give us an inside look at the production of the film, why Vin decided to return to the series, and why now was the perfect time to return to the xXx franchise.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

  1. Vin Diesel returned to the franchise after so many years away for himself, saying that he wanted to play a character where he could laugh and smile again.xXx: Return of Xander Cage
  2. He felt that it was important to use the film to introduce the world to a much more global cast, while also showing how much fun people could have making the films.
  3. Vin had met Deepika Padukone during a screen test for Furious 7, and when D.J. Caruso saw that screen test, he decided then they had to have her in the film.
  4. After working with Tony Jaa on Furious 7, who Vin has dubbed his good luck charm, he knew the moment he was added to the cast of The Return of Xander Cage that the film would be a hit for them.
  5. Nina Dobrev surprised everyone in the production when she auditioned for the role of Becky. They were so used to seeing her in serious roles, they didn’t expect her to be able to pull off the comedic relief as well as she did. She joked she only got it because Victoria Justice wasn’t available.
  6. Xander’s relationship with Adele, played by Ruby Rose, was built to be a bromance from the beginning, instead of a romance.
  7. They wanted to make sure that all the women were represented as smart, strong women, and they all had different personalities. No one was supposed to be the same, and that was a talk they had early on in production.xXx: Return of Xander Cage
  8. The characters Adele, played by Ruby Rose, and Serena, played by Deepika Padukone, were written to be frenemies, but they had a hard time playing that dynamic because they got along so well. They couldn’t wait to film the scene where they come together and fight, and being stronger together, so they could finally have fun on film together, not just behind the scenes.
  9. Donnie Yen said he came to work every day just to have fun, and that every day for him was like a carnival. He continued to say that Vin was such a warm guy, as well as producer, and he loved being a part of the film.
  10. Deepika and Ruby trained for weeks with their action stunt team to get the choreography of the fight sequences down, and make it look believable.
  11. Nina Dobrev on the other hand had no training for her small action sequence, and it was actually made up on the day of the shoot. Nina begged D.J. to give her an action scene in the film, because she said her friends would make fun of her relentlessly if she was in an action film with Vin Diesel, only to sit in the corner and cry without ever getting in on the action.
  12. Xander’s fighting style was a mix of martial arts and motor bike skills, called MXPX, which they created specifically for his character.
  13. Michael Bisping was someone Vin wanted to have in the film, and said he brought such a great power to the set every time he was there. They said he never took a day off really, because any time he was off, he’d have to keep on his UFC training.xXx: Return of Xander Cage
  14. Vin wanted to use this movie to show global harmony in a lot of ways. He doesn’t want to look at people by where they’re from, but who they are, and their culture.
  15. Donnie is similar to Vin, where he pushes himself to be the best he could be. Vin knows he’s a perfectionist, and that it causes problems on some of his films, but he shared a kinship with Donnie over that likeminded bond. They both pushed each other to be the very best they could be.
  16. D.J. Caruso said that working with Vin was great, because he was a creative producer, and they never worried about how many shots they had left or how much time they had left, they just wanted to get the best product possible together.
  17. Nina said even though her dad was a computer programmer, she wasn’t able to bring any of that to her role, because she never actually learned to fix things on her own when it came to computers, she always had her dad fix it for her. So as much as she wished she could bring more from her past from it, this pushed her to want to learn more after.xXx: Return of Xander Cage
  18. The return of Darius Stone, played by Ice Cube, was something that had been decided early on in the film’s production, but the size of his role always remained in question. It wasn’t until they got to the third act that they realized it was the perfect place to insert his return in the series. They wanted him to steal that scene, and really standout and bring the specific flavor his character had in State of the Union into his appearance here.
  19. They have ideas for the fourth film in the series, should this one do well with audiences, and D.J. Caruso said that he has his eye on a story that is loosely based on one of his favorite Walter Hill films from the 1970s, but he wouldn’t say which.
  20. Caruso would love to film sequences of the next film in IMAX, a format he started to fall in love with, when he started working on the film’s transfer for the IMAX screens. He thinks that the series could lend itself well to using that technology.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage, starring Vin Diesel, Deepika Padukone, Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, and directed by D.J. Caruso, opens in theaters January 20, 2017.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage Movie Review

Xander Cage e1484871090698
Xander Cage e1484871090698

It’s been fifteen years since we’ve seen Vin Diesel in the role of Xander Cage, the character he played in Rob Cohen’s extreme spy thriller, xXx. Much like the The Fast and the Furious franchise before it, Vin Diesel decided to pursue other films, leaving the series with no star, and no real direction to go. A sequel, xXx: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube as Darius Stone, the newest agent in the xXx spy program. The film unceremoniously killed off the character of Xander Cage in a line of dialogue, and never looked back. But the film’s underperformance left the series on ice, and most thought it would go quietly into the night without another word. Hollywood, however, is never one to leave well enough alone, and in a time where many long dormant film series are resurrected, it was only a matter of time before someone took another crack at the xXx franchise with its original star back in the lead.

Flash forward twelve years, Vin Diesel is back as Xander Cage for xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the third entry in this spy series, this time directed by D.J. Caruso. But Vin isn’t alone, as he brings series regular Samuel L. Jackson back, mixed with an incredibly exciting diverse cast from across the world, including famed martial artist Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, Deepika Padukone, and Nina Dobrev. In xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the world is once again threatened by a mad man, and the only person who can stop him is the long thought dead Xander Cage. But Cage can’t do it alone, and assembles his own team of the bad, the extreme, and the completely insane, to take on forces no one else can.

If the plot synopsis feels like something you’ve seen before, you’d be right, and normally that’s to the detriment of a film. But in this case, it’s honestly better that the film’s synopsis is so straight forward and easy going, because the film’s focus isn’t on the story, but the characters and the situations they get into. It’s got a real throwback feel to the action films of the 1990s, and in a lot of ways, it feels like a film Jean-Claude Van Damme would have made at the height of his career. Not only that, but the film has an incredibly self aware nature, and never takes itself too seriously, which is the film’s biggest asset. With so many movies so set on being grounded and realistic, this film throws logic to the wind, and lets itself be crazy, ridiculous, and over the top, all while winking at the camera.

xXx: Return of Xander CageA lot of this can be attributed to Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage, a character Diesel clearly enjoyed returning to. Unlike Dominic Toretto, Diesel’s stone faced and serious Fast and the Furious counterpart, the role of Xander is a lot more light hearted, and a much more over the top figure who spouts one liners, simply because he can, and kicks ass while doing it. He really seems to have made peace with the character, and his place in the franchise, and his return is certainly a welcome addition. It’s almost even more impressive that the film never really tries to explain why Xander has managed to hide so long. For someone that is supposed to be dead, the CIA has an incredibly easy time finding him. Yeah, this film has next to no logic throughout, knowingly so, and it’s that big, dumb grin it has on its face that makes it work so well.

Pulling a page from the last three Mission: Impossible films, Return of Xander Cage also makes the wise decision of not laying the film squarely on Diesel’s shoulders, and instead surrounds him with so amazing talent. The film’s ensemble nature certainly makes the proceedings throughout more exciting, as each actor brings something fun to their role, though some much more than others, with Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, and Ruby Rose as the film’s biggest standouts. Yen, who was just seen in Star Wars: Rogue One, is someone who many may recognize, but haven’t truly gotten to see at his very best, as many of American films haven’t given him the platform to show off his martial arts. But Caruso and Diesel wisely use Yen’s talents fully here, with his character of Xiang being a force of nature, and being in many of the film’s best action sequences. It’s nice to see Yen really getting to show off just how talented he is in a film like this, as many of his previous films have sadly gone overlooked by western audiences.

Deepika Padukone and Ruby Rose are both similarly used here in their roles of Serena and Adele, two of the film’s big female action heroines. It’s great to see a film that lets women be kick ass, as well as smart, and both bring that to life here. Their frenemy relationship is a bit unnecessary, but when the characters come together in the final act of the film, it’s really a joy to see them together. This also leads us to Nina Dobrev, who plays the quirky tech geek, Becky, this film’s equivalent of James Bond’s Q. Dobrev takes the reigns of the role of the late Michael Roof, who played Agent Shavers in the previous films, but makes it her own. She’s quirky, and ultimately a very fun presence throughout the film. Though at times the character comes off as a little much, she’s so likable it’s almost enough to look past, as she works so well with the team and adds to the film’s already over the top and light nature.

Unfortunately, the rest of the supporting cast isn’t as lucky, as most are used so minimally, you wonder why they’re there, instead of just fleshing out the characters in the film that we’ve already come to like. One character who is used minimally, but effectively, is Ice Cube’s Darius Stone, who returns in the film’s third act. The only problem is, once he appears, you realize he should have been in the rest of the film as well. He’s such a great presence, that it could have only strengthened the rest of the film. It’s just great to see that the series hasn’t left the second entry completely out, even after its lackluster performance, and it’s something I think other franchises could take a note from. Use the past, no matter how ugly it may be, learn from those mistakes, and build off them. This doesn’t mean repeat things from previous entries though, which is the biggest flaw of the film overall, and its use of Samuel L. Jackson’s Gibbons. It’s such a waste of a great character, it’s too bad they couldn’t find any other way to use him.

Director D.J. Caruso, best known for Disturbia and Eagle Eye, does a fine job behind the lens of the camera, filming some compelling action sequences that are a lot of fun throughout. Xander’s introduction in the film in particular, as he skis through the mountains, and then skateboards down a winding hill, is a lot of fun, and Caruso does a fantastic job with it. He also captures much of Donnie Yen’s fantastic skills very well, but a few action sequences have a bit too much quick cutting, which lessens the impact of the action, as well as makes it hard to really get a feel for what’s happening. One of the biggest crimes many modern action films make is the lack of staging and geography, making it nearly impossible to tell what’s happening. Caruso never lets the film get that bad, but the quick cuts are at times a bit jarring, and make it hard to get a feel for what’s happening. Thankfully, by the film’s third act, those problems all go away, and the film ends on a strong note.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is a big, bombastic, over the top action film where logic doesn’t have to exist, because it’s ridiculous, and it knows it. The film is not just the return of Diesel as Xander, but it’s a return of fun for the franchise. Diesel and Yen shine throughout, kicking ass at every turn, while Deepika Padukone and Ruby Rose steal the show. The film delivers thrills, fun, and laughs, and is a great way to start the year at the movies.

Nintendo Switch Launches March 3 at $299.99

Nintendo has finally announced that the new Nintendo Switch system will launch worldwide on March 3, 2017 at a suggested retail price of $299.99 in the United States.

The system will include the main console, Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R) controllers, a Joy-Con grip (to which two Joy-Con are attached and used as one controller), a set of Joy-Con wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock (which holds the main console and connects it to a TV), an HDMI cable and an AC adapter. Two stylish versions of the system will be released: a version with a set of gray Joy-Con, and a version with one neon blue and one neon red Joy-Con. Both versions will be the same price.

“Nintendo Switch is a brand-new kind of home gaming system that offers a wide variety of play modes,” said Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima. “We will introduce the world to new experiences made possible by the unique characteristics of the Nintendo Switch hardware and the Joy-Con.”

Nintendo Switch is a breakthrough home video game system. It not only connects to a TV at home, but it also instantly transforms into an on-the-go handheld using its 6.2-inch screen. For the first time, players can enjoy a full home-console experience anytime, anywhere. The screen includes capacitive multi-touch capabilities for compatible games. Battery life can last for more than six hours, but will vary depending on the software and usage conditions. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for roughly three hours on a single charge. While away from home, Nintendo Switch can be charged by plugging the AC adapter into the console’s USB Type-C connector.

The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun. Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip. They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games. Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

Nintendo Switch also contains a number of built-in features that make it more interactive. The left Joy-Con has a Capture Button that players can press to take instant screenshots of gameplay to share with friends on social media. The right Joy-Con includes an NFC touchpoint for interaction with amiibo figures, as well as an IR Motion Camera that can detect the distance, shape and motion of nearby objects in specially designed games. For example, it can tell how far away a player’s hand is, and even if the hand is forming a rock, paper or scissors shape. Both Joy-Con include advanced HD Rumble, which can provide compatible games with subtle vibrations that are much more realistic than before. The effect is so detailed that a player could, for example, feel the sensation of individual ice cubes colliding inside a glass when shaking a Joy-Con. With HD Rumble players can experience a level of realism not possible through sights and sounds alone.

Nintendo Switch makes it easy for players to stay connected. Up to eight systems can be connected for local wireless play. The player can place the system upright anywhere by using the built-in stand, then easily share Joy-Con for multiplayer fun away from the TV. The system will support online Wi-Fi multiplayer gaming. Nintendo also unveiled a new online subscription service that will begin with a free trial at launch. The service includes a smart-device application available in Summer 2017 that will let users invite friends to play online, set play appointments and chat with one another as they play compatible games. The fully featured paid service will be available in the fall.

Nintendo Switch will be supported by world-class third-party publishers including Activision Publishing Inc., Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and major Japanese publishers. Some publishers, such as Bethesda Softworks, are joining Nintendo for the first time. Players can look forward to major franchises on Nintendo Switch such as EA SPORTS FIFA, The Elder Scrolls, NBA 2K, Minecraft and more. Nintendo Switch software will not be region locked.

The unique capabilities of the console and Joy-Con have combined with innovations from past systems to create Nintendo’s most flexible, feature-packed video game system ever. This is demonstrated by the wide variety of unique games that were announced for launch day, this summer and into the 2017 holiday season, from both Nintendo and its third-party partners. From the engrossing open-air experience of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the party fun of 1-2-Switch, Nintendo Switch offers something for everyone.

The Master Edition includes all of those items plus a Master Sword of Resurrection figure, and has a suggested retail price of $129.99.

1-2-Switch: This is the first Nintendo video game in which players compete in fun activities while staring into each other’s eyes instead of at the TV screen. From Wild West gunslinging to copying each other’s dance moves, the games in 1-2-Switch make creative use of a broad variety of Nintendo Switch features to liven up parties with anyone, anywhere, at any time. 1-2-Switch will be available alongside the Nintendo Switch system on its launch day in March.

ARMS: Featuring a unique multiplayer fighting sport that lets players trade blows using extendable arms, this game includes elements of both boxing and shooting games, plus a new cast of characters. After customizing a character with a variety of arms, the player holds one Joy-Con in each hand and throws left and right punches at the opponent. Characters can jump and dash, and players can bend their punches by twisting their hands as they swing. As players learn the game and improve their skills, they will discover a deeper level of advanced tactics. Players can compete against the computer, against a friend on a split screen using a second set of Joy-Con (sold separately), against worldwide rivals online, or with two Nintendo Switch systems over a local wireless connection. ARMS will be available this Spring.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: With Nintendo Switch, fans can enjoy the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 anywhere, anytime, even with up to eight friends in local wireless multiplayer. All your favorite tracks and characters return from the Wii U version, plus all DLC tracks and characters, and new characters join the roster, too: Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy from Splatoon, as well as King Boo, Dry Bones and Bowser Jr.! Plus, Battle mode has been revamped and includes Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast, with new courses such as Urchin Underpass and Battle Stadium, and returning ones like GCN Luigi’s Mansion and SNES Battle Course 1. Players can now carry two items at a time, including new items returning from previous Mario Kart games such as Boo (the item-stealing ghost) and the Feather, which gives players a high jump in Battle mode. Players can even choose to use a new Smart Steering feature, which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids, even at 200cc. Play in TV mode in up to 1080p. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches in April.

Splatoon 2: Traditional 4-on-4 turf battles return in this full sequel to the original breakout hit game, along with new stages, new fashions and new weapons such as the two-handed Splat Dualies. Players can compete on the TV or on the go. Whether they use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (sold separately) or Joy-Con, players can aim their ink using gyro controls. Splatoon 2 supports both local and online multiplayer matches. The game will also support voice chat using the new Nintendo Switch smart device app (a free, limited version of the app will be available this summer), and will add new stages, fashions and weapons after launch, as the original game did. Splatoon 2 is scheduled to launch this summer.

Super Mario Odyssey: This is the first sandbox game that allows Mario to fully explore his world since Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64 and Super Mario Sunshine on Nintendo GameCube. Mario jumps out of the Mushroom Kingdom and embarks on a journey through mysterious new places and new experiences, such as sailing between worlds aboard an airship and the ability to throw Mario’s cap. Super Mario Odyssey is scheduled to launch during the 2017 holiday season.

Snipperclips – Cut it out, together!: In this creative new kind of Action-Puzzle game, players communicate, cooperate and use their imaginations to solve basic and advanced puzzles by cutting paper characters into new shapes. People can play solo or with a friend in the main game, then bring in a bigger group to solve up to four-player dynamic puzzles or compete in other activities. Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! will release in March exclusively in Nintendo eShop.

Movie Review ‘Hitman: Agent 47’

Agent47Poster 1
Agent47Poster 1

This guest post was brought to you by William Reynolds

HITMAN: AGENT 47 is not a new movie, but in the context of one of the last releases of 2016, now seems like a good time to take a look back at it. Last month we saw the release of Assassin’s Creed, a film based on the popular Ubisoft series starring Michael Fassbender in the lead role. Viewed by many as a project that could reverse the trend of underwhelming game-to-film adaptations, Assassin’s Creed flopped with critics and was relatively disappointing at the box office. That’s not to say it was an outright failure. Fassbender is always enjoyable and the first quarter or so of the film was intriguing. In the end it fell prey to the same old lack of substance and confusing action that has doomed video game adaptations in the past.

It seems fair to ask if Hitman: Agent 47 was any better. The circumstances surrounding the movie’s release were similar to those with regard to Assassin’s Creed. Hitman wasn’t just a recognizable name in gaming, but a franchise that was in the midst of significant expansion across multiple platforms.

Following the 2012 release of Hitman: Absolution, Square Enix and IO Interactive took steps to further branch out with the series. This began with internet casino gaming platforms, where it’s not uncommon to see existing characters used as subjects for slot reels and jackpot games. The Hitman slot reel involved recreates some of the most memorable features of the series, including a bonus game where players could choose a target to eliminate before obtaining that target’s hidden value. It’s more creative than you’d expect and signaled the decision by the publisher to expand the reach of the franchise.

That decision to branch out also led to multiple mobile games including Hitman Go and Hitman Sniper. The former is a turn-based puzzle game where you control an agent moving along various grids toward targets, and the latter is a point-and-click sniping game that stands out in a crowded genre of mobile shooter..

With all this going on and interest in the character at an all-time high they decided to follow up with a second Hitman movie. Unfortunately, Hitman: Agent 47 wound up being a mess and is considered one of the worst video game films not directed by Uwe Boll.

The movie tells the story of 47 (Rupert Friend), a specially trained and genetically altered assassin working for an international contract killing agency. Wishing to meet the man who helped create him, 47 begins a search for Katia (Hannah Ware), the same man’s daughter, who holds the clues to his whereabouts. Along the way a group called Syndicate International and their agent John Smith (Zachary Quinto) get in the way, attempting to stop 47 and find his creator for themselves. As the film progresses we learn that Katia too has the power to unlock assassin abilities, and she and 47 wind up on a frantic quest first to find, and then to rescue her father.

The movie does decent job of capturing the sleek aesthetic of the games and the action scenes are done well but aren’t enough to comprise a good film. The plot is bland, the characters are soulless, and the action, even if it’s not bad, is somewhat suffocating.

The only surprise is that no one involved saw that problem coming. Replicating video game action in an action movie doesn’t seem particularly difficult, but giving a video game character a compelling persona and an interesting mission is a different challenge. If you love the series, it’s still worth checking out, but if you’re just looking for some action-packed escapism, you’d be better off looking elsewhere.

The undoubtedly iconic sensational musical that is RENT has returned to Costa Mesa for a very limited engagement. This authentically done new production celebrates 20 years of the Tony Award-winning musical staying true to its original Broadway numbers and retaining its incredibly powerful vocal talents. Those familiar with RENT The Musical, whether the onstage production or the film adaptation, will all love this Work Light Productions version.  Staying genuine to itself, with limited adjustments to near zero story changes, RENT 20th ANNIVERSARY TOUR is the definitive tribute to this exuberant and emotional show that millions already cherish. “Forget, regret or life is yours to miss!” If you are reading this now, there are no more excuses to skip this production.

Opening with familiar staging and the obligatory “December 24th, 9pm Eastern Standard Time…”, the struggling artist, Mark Cohen, introduces us to his life and his roommates troubles with rent.  Instantly, this duo shines with convincing chemistry and inflection that closely resembles original cast members, Anthony Raap and Adam Pascal.  The voicemail beeps and it’s quickly apparent that RENT 20th Anniversary Tour is going to be strong and not let down the countless RENT fans that will be going in droves to see.

xXx: Return of Xander CageDebuting on Broadway in 1996, this little musical forever changed the landscape of American theatre and quickly grew to success. Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak profoundly to new generations and remains strong for repeat theatergoers. Often mentioned as being a re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows a year in the lives of seven struggling artists in New York City’s East Village during its Bohemian days of unconventional lifestyles of musical and artistic pursuits, often revolving around protests and standing up for their beliefs.  It was a time that HIV/AIDS was rampant and plays a integral part of the lives RENT follows.

Following a year in the life of this colorful cast ensemble, we are met with the familiar characters you are most likely already well-versed with.  Starting with Mark Cohen, played by Danny Harris Konfeld who stays true to Raap’s style that everyone expects from this character. He’s as innocent, charming and well-liked as he should be and also delivers impeccable timing this character needs for much of the shows comedy.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Mark’s roommate and friend, Roger Davis, played by Kaleb Wells, delivers a slightly higher pitched vocal performance than Pascal at times and also has sort-of this Daryl from The Walking Dead toughness that feels authentic.  While possibly the least flawless performance, I feel like he felt more real than past versions I’ve seen or heard.

Mimi, club dancer and drug addict who becomes involved with Roger, is played brilliantly and stronger-than-ever by Skyler Volpe who brings the house down with an epic performance of “Out Tonight”. Singing “Light My Candle” ever-so-slightly different, her mannerisms and performance is out of this world and brought the audience to cheers.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Mark’s flirtatious ex-girlfriend, Maureen, has always been a difficult role to compete with Idina Menzel’s performance, but Katie Lamark has hit it out of the park! Usually such a role must be made its own and requires a strong improvisational-like feel as its typically the most comedic performance. Lamark is no exception and was able to prompt the audience to give the most thunderous “Moo” I could ever imagine. Her girlfriend, Joanne, also has an equally as strong performance by Jasmine Easler. Their “Take Me or Leave Me” is just as big, sexual, and mesmerizing as one could want from the two.

Benny, a yuppie scum and a sell-out to the rest of his friends, is far more ‘douchie’ than his films counterpart.  Played from a strong performance by Christian Thompson, Benny remains as the hated ex-roommate wanting to take over his former close-friends building to make a tech driven studio. I still find his possible past involvement with Mimi odd, but more fitting than if he was played as a more stand-up, reasonable character as the film. I guess it’s possible their lives still cross paths, but feel this storyline that has remained since Broadway makes more sense to be omitted like in the film.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

This leaves me with the “computer genius, teacher, and vagabond anarchist who ran naked through the Parthenon” Tom Collins and his love Angel, street percussionist and young transgender that always is the life of the party.  Collins, who is played by Aaron Harrington, has that deep Jesse L. Martin voice we have come to know and is as vocally strong as one would want throughout all his epic solos. David Merino delivers an invigorating and infectious performance as Angel. Staying incredibly animated and as ferocious as ever, Merino’s performance will have your butt cheeks moving to the beat of his “drum”. Yes, I had to maintain my composure during “Today 4 U”.

It’s clearly obvious that I enjoyed everyones performance from their vocals to their dancing, to everyones onstage chemistry to their individuality in the roles; this RENT production is second to none and I can honestly say that I was captivated by it all. The band remains tucked away in the corner onstage for all to see and the stage design remains refreshingly stagnant, having the focus stay on the cast members superb performances. While, as a whole, I really don’t need to complain of anything, but with the first Act being so dominant with numerous hits and wildly upbeat numbers, the second Act does suffer from some long repeated themes that could benefit from some cut lyrics. However, this is an anniversary show so it makes sense for it to stay as close to the original as possible.

RENT is one of the first musicals I listened to apart from seeing it live. Its one of those shows that I heard so much of before ever seeing it that just hearing any of the songs live, gives me goosebumps. I realize that not everyone seeing this show will experience this, but when a production is so similar to it’s Broadway cast recordings, one cannot deny that this is anything less than astonishing. This emotional show with themes of the importance of love, friends, and living each day to its fullest should hold true to everyone. Whether if you are only semi-familiar with RENT or not at all, this is a universal theme that we should all encompass. It’s surely not for those that aren’t the most open-minded, but at its core it should open doors for those that have lived with them locked for so long. With that, I am going to leave you with my same closing as my first review for RENT; what are you waiting for… there is “no day but today”.

RENT 20th ANNIVERSARY TOUR is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts through Sunday, Jan. 8th and remains on tour throughout the year. For ticket details, visit SCFTA.org.

Disney•Pixar’s “Cars 3” First Look!

CARS 3 a045 28k alt pub.pub16.70

Disney•Pixar’s “Cars 3” filmmakers revealed key cast members and new characters in the upcoming faster-than-fast film. Joining Owen Wilson in the all-new story that tests the heart of a champion in a high-tech world are Cristela Alonzo and Armie Hammer as unconventional trainer Cruz Ramirez and next-gen racer Jackson Storm, respectively.

“Cristela is full of optimism and a positive energy that I think really comes through in Cruz’s personality,” said “Cars 3” director Brian Fee. “And of course, she’s a hilarious comedian, so that doesn’t hurt either.”

“Armie brought a great combination of intensity and charm to the role of Jackson Storm,” said Fee. “His charisma helped create a character you really love to hate.”

Directed by Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2“) and produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short), “Cars 3” cruises into theaters on June 16, 2017.

Lightning McQueen is world champion—a modern-day racing legend who’s riding high with five Piston-Cup wins under his hood. Suddenly, he finds himself faced with a new generation of racers who threaten not only his dominance in the sport—but the confidence that got him there. Determined to get back to the pole position, the #95 must decide if his love for racing is enough to fuel the comeback of his life.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Owen Wilson (“The Royal Tenenbaums,” upcoming “Wonder”) returns to the racetrack as the voice of the champion. Wilson stars in the upcoming Woody Harrelson-directed live film “Lost in London.”

Cruz Ramirez is a sunny-but-fierce unconventional trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She expertly arms the team’s talented rookies with cutting-edge tools to tear up the track—but she nearly stalls when her longtime idol Lightning McQueen shows up. While she’d love to help him find his way back to the top, she knows the competition is faster than ever, and victory is all about speed—or is it?

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Cristela Alonzo (“The Angry Birds Movie”)was called on to help bring the character to life. Alonzo’s debut stand-up special for Netflix, “Lower Classy,” which debuts on Jan. 24, 2017, showcases the comedian’s life as a the daughter of an immigrant, touching on important issues like social class, breaking the glass ceiling and how she can’t get the hang of Zumba.

Jackson Storm is fast, sleek and ready to race. A frontrunner in the next generation of racers, Storm’s quiet confidence and cocky demeanor are off-putting—but his unmatched speed threatens to redefine the sport. Trained on high-tech simulators that are programmed to perfect technique and maximize velocity, Jackson Storm is literally built to be unbeatable—and he knows it.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Armie Hammer (“Birth of a Nation”) was tapped as the voice of Jackson Storm. Hammer recently appeared in Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals.” He will next be seen starring in “Free Fire,” directed by Ben Wheatley; “Final Portrait,” directed by Stanley Tucci; and “Call Me by Your Name,” directed by Luca Guadagnino.

‘Elf The Musical’ Warms the Hearts of Orange County

The wildly successful holiday comedy, Elf, has made its way to the Broadway stage and now to its Orange County premiere at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.  This now modern day Christmas classic has been adapted to the musical stage front from the cherished 2003 Will Ferrell film. ELF THE MUSICAL features a brand new line-up of flashy, cheerful upbeat melodies and remains as charming as the original movie filling the hearts of new audiences with holiday spirit. This new on-stage production will leave audiences all warm and tingly inside as ELF THE MUSICAL keeps the magic of the original while adding memorable onstage performances and reminding those that have forgotten, Christmas can bring love and joy to one and all.

Including many new songs from Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), director Sam Scalamoni has staged a fun-filled ‘laughfest’ with some fantastic comedic performances.  Holding the intension span even of the youngest of crowds, ELF THE MUSICAL keeps a high energy flow from start to finish keeping children at bay while still never alienating its adult audience.  Keeping true to the movie, there is some over-the-kids heads adult oriented humor and it strays away from the squeamish over-the-top holiday musical production you may be worried about.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

I went in skeptical and apprehensive of what I may be in for, but ELF THE MUSICAL was able to prove my skepticism wrong.  Taking over the recent annual production for The Center, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is absent from this years lineup and instead, the light hearted now near holiday classic ELF has taken over Segerstrom.

ELF THE MUSICAL does take a little time to warm up to as one may be hoping for too much of the same performance as Will Ferrell delivered in the film.  Fortunately, SAM HARTLEY (Beauty and the Beast National Tour) plays a charming and charismatic Buddy the Elf who remains true to the role yet still makes it his own.  Hartley has golden comedic timing, and while his “SANNNTTTAAA!!!!” line was lacking, he still added something a little different.  Instead of playing ridiculously over-the-top, Hartley instead brings it down a notch basically grounding the character somewhat.  His vocal talents and onstage presence shine through the entire musical.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

In case your unfamiliar with the story, ELF is the comical yet unbelievable tale of a young orphan child who has grown up at the North Pole with elves unknowing of his true human decent. Buddy’s non-elf sized body and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. Coming to the realizations of his true history, Buddy learns of his human father and embarks on a journey to New York City.  In his effort to gain the love of his scrooge-like workaholic of a father, Buddy must bring the city to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

This NETworks Presentations, LLC production is a top notch production with wonderful actors, but expect quite a few differences from the film. At its core, the musical is very much the same of its film counterpart, but as always when it comes to stage productions, it will have its fair share of changes. Gone is the head elf and basically replaced by more interactions with Santa who is basically our MC for the evening. Introduction to Buddy’s family is somewhat different, the brother is more accepting, Buddy’s love interest is afraid to sing, and there is no shower scene… okay I get that may have not worked as well in this setting. Nonetheless, there are changes to make this work better for the stage. It will be good to be prepared for some story telling changes.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

The first third of the musical suffers from a lackluster group of songs that are more cheesy than magical, but Buddy’s step-mom and step-brothers relationship brings much of the shows charm. The two breakout songs are a duets by these two and by far the most memorable. The rest of the songs, besides the notable and climatic “A Christmas Song”, are rather forgettable but no doubt still fun.  I just wish there were some more powerful ballads to write home about.

After a strong ACT II, ELF THE MUSICAL still managed to choke me up and help me remember the magic of the holidays.  By finding the power of family, innocence and the simpleness of finding the joy in life can help turn around a number of “bah humbugs”.  The show is hysterical at times, entertaining its entirety and overall a happy-go-lucky production that is a perfect treat for this holiday season that is perfect for the entire family.

Elf is playing though 1/1/17. Tickets to ELF THE MUSICAL start at $29 and are available online at SCFTA.org.

Movie Review ‘Rogue One’

RogueOne578eb3acbbdad
RogueOne578eb3acbbdad

In what is quite possibly the darkest, most-gritty film in the Star Wars franchise to date, director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) has brought justice to a Star Wars prequel in their first standalone story.  ROGUE ONE remains strongly reminiscent of the imagery most audiences have come to love from the saga combining classic galactic styling with a modern twist meshing a continuity between timelines.  Packed with story development and countless worlds Star Wars is known for, Rogue One combines quality acting and emotional character development with one hell of an intense “first battle” and climatic third act. This is by all means a Star Wars lovers dream come true with storyline that occurs just a short time before the start of Episode IV, most notably known as A New Hope. And it’s just that, hope – that’s what this documentary on society is truly about after all.

Stop! I am not getting preachy here. Don’t worry. BUT, that is George Lucas’s own words on his films after all.  Rogue One is no exception. When Gareth and the writing crew of Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy along with story developers John Knoll and Gary Whitta and not to mention the rest of this epic crew, sought out to create it’s very own style and feel for this first standalone Star Wars film, they thankfully failed miserably by ultimately making the culmination of the best aspects all in one film.

Every moment, every shot, every fine detail within each costume piece to each set to each sound queue will stem memories of the first trilogy. Rogue One is a love story to the saga itself with it’s very “being” only coming to fruition thanks to the likes of Lucas Film veteran John Knoll and the mystery that has plagued us ever since that first scroll of off-yellow words ever crawled up the silver screen. How did the Rebels ever get the plans to the Death Star?

Episode IV, A NEW HOPE It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy….

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

No spoilers here, but if you want to know what Rogue One is all about… well then, you just had to turn to Episode IV’s prologue.  A catalyst to the introduction of the Alliance rebellion, Jyn Erso, Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Like Crazy), is a Rebellion soldier whose troubled childhood has lead to a life left in hiding.  After being recruited due to her connection to an influential Imperial scientist, Jyn is faced with the most important mission to the Star Wars universe; steal the plans for the Death Star.

An entirely unneeded prequel, but a prequel that everyone wanted nonetheless. While it may have not been necessary to find out how the plans to the Death Star were obtained, it helps provide clarity and insight to how the Rebel Alliance became such a threat to the Dark Side.  Most importantly, Rogue One helps put an end to several unsolved mysteries and wonders as well as tie together Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope together.

Ahhh!!! There is so much more I want to say here but for the sake to the films surprises and revealing moments, this synopsis must remain vague.  While Lord Vader has been featured heavily in marketing material, there are far more goodies throughout the film that will have even the most casual of fans ‘fangirling’ like never before.  I am getting giddy just thinking about it now!

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Not only does Rogue One – A Star Wars Story contain many “aw ha” moments and several surprises that will leave you rejuvenated for all things Star Wars, but there are countless goosebump inducing moments that should bring absolute pure joy to your face.  From a familiar score by Michael Giacchino (Zootopia, Inside Out, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond) that is ever-so-slightly altered to be its own entity, to morbid resurrected dead actors, to astonishing new scenery that feels so similar to the originals yet somehow is new, nothing feels out of place or out of sync within Star Wars universe.  Most notably the costume and set design is so on point to the classics that the line between new design and old design is blurred.

Greig Fraser’s (Zero Dark Thirty) slightly more gritty yet hand-held driven cinematography helps bring a grounded approach to film to a genre that usually seems so sci-fi that realism is lost in space. Rogue One follows The Force Awakens direction by remaining real-life set heavy with numerous 360 degree hand built sets and effects that are near photorealistic. This has helped bring a sense of belief this could take place within our world even though the number of worlds visited are vastly different than anything found on Earth.

With gorgeous cinematography and well-shot scenes, Rogue One can stand on its own just by the landscapes and scenic design, but the film offers a docu-war biopic feel leading toward an epic battle sequence that is well-choreographed, shot and edited.  Offering some martial arts and non-Light Saber heavy fight sequences, Rogue One holds its own with new invented ways to stage fight sequences.

While Felicity Jones delivers a superb performance that will surely lend a whole new standard for female role models, her character is not just some feminists addition to help show the saga can have a diversity.  No, instead Jyn is a gender-nutural kind of character that does not sell itself on sexuality, but rather holds to morals that stand for wither male or female.  Female leads are of course no stranger to this intergalactic cinematic world, but don’t tell that to the Star Wars haters.

That being said, it is appreciative to see far greater diverse cast of human characters which actually contain accents and give off the appearance of being from different worlds opposed to the first trilogy.  Though, keeping with the Nazi theme of the Empire and retaining the similarities of Stormtroopers to well, the Stormtroopers of the Nazi party, the Empire is just as dark as ever!

Jyn’s Rebel squadron is matched by the likes of Cassian Andor, Diego Luna, a respected Alliance intelligence officer. Coming along with Cassian is the new droid of the film, K-2SO, a reprogrammed Imperial security guard who is wildly comedic with a voice being lended by the hilarious Alan Tudyk. K-2 definitely contains the Star Wars branded comedy with bickering style of Chewy to Han or C3PO and R2D2. The relationship between K-2 and Jyn is witty and hysterical.  I am always welcoming of these antics in movies that can tend to take themselves too seriously.  K-2SO is the light heartedness needed to keep a giant film like Rogue One levelheaded.

Cassian along with the rest of the band of misfits have all done awful things in the fight to do what they feel is for the greater good. Rogue One does not shy away that the Alliance has their own set of challenges and problems. Also joining Jyn’s crew is Chirrut Îmwe, a blind monk that has found the Force, along with his faithful friend Base Malbus.  Recruiting an Empire cargo pilot, the crew also takes on Bodhi Rock, Riz Ahmed.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

The entire cast is far cry from the days of Episode I through III.  Everyone is able to build some depth even though it’s a self containing story. I wont touch upon all the characters, but I can go on without mentioning the complicated character of Saw Gerrera played by Forest Whitaker.  This intense outlaw has his own attributes making him stand out from the others, but his powerful presence helps direct Jyn is the right direction.  I’ll commend Whitaker by going all out with the character, though I feel like we could explored his character more.

By no means is Rogue One a film that will be loved by non-Star Wars fans.  This is still after everything a Star Wars story, and caters to those that are already well-versed in this world.  Bringing in many connections to other Episodes and characters, it may be useful to brush up on some of Episode IV and perhaps some Revenge of the Sith if you aren’t too familiar. While I myself enjoy Star Wars, I am not knowledgable in all the characters, planets, and small plot lines from each film. Rogue One was still able to capture my attention and make sense of it all while still being incredibly rewarding in the end.

There is no denying that the first half or so can drag if you aren’t aware of what is to come. Just remember the character development is worthy and your patience will be rewarded. Disney is no doubt headed in the right direction with their more recently obtained intellectual property. I don’t believe any one should be concerned of the direction the Star Wars universe will continue. I’m more excited than ever for future of the franchise and above all else, they can help bring a sense of hope for our own world.  Again, the subtext is not preachy nor taking any political side if you are worried about its relation to todays political climate. I mean, this is just a documentary after all according to George.

Loving Lausanne and the Lake Geneva Region of Switzerland

pic 1 Copy

The train ride from Zurich to the French-speaking city of Lausanne is a never-ending postcard of the beautiful Swiss countryside. The journey is filled with green meadows with grazing cows, rolling hills with old farms, ancient cities with historic structures and castles, and stunning views of the country’s many waterways.

A friend and I recently took this journey and it is something we will not soon forget. The adventure began when we landed at Zurich Airport and used our Swiss Travel Passes to board the luxury train. The passes (www.swisstravelsystem.com/) are an all-in-one ticket for travel by rail, road and waterway throughout the country. They also get you into hundreds of museums as well as mountain railways and more.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

The train ride to Lausanne is full of beauty and adventure

When the train pulled into Lausanne Station, we met local guide Christine Seuret, who showed us to our room at the Royal Savoy Hotel (www.royalsavoy.ch/en).

Dating from 1909, the Royal Savoy is an iconic structure in Lausanne. Overlooking Lake Geneva, the elegant, Art Nouveau-styled hotel has been a hideaway for the rich and famous since its inception. The Spanish royal family lived here in exile, and Thailand’s king spent his youth here. I spent one night here and will never forget it.

Our luxurious room at the five-star hotel featured a balcony overlooking the lake and the historic city, a spacious living / sleeping area with king bed, large TV, and office station, free WiFi, mini-bar, hardwood parquet floor, a Nespresso machine, in-room iPad, and a plush bathroom with rain forest shower head.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

The Royal Savoy Hotel has been a luxurious, lake-front retreat since 1909

After unpacking, we joined Christine for a walk around town. Lausanne is the second-largest city on Lake Geneva and the capital of the Canton of Vaud. The town is built on three hills, surrounded by vineyard-covered slopes, with Lake Geneva at its feet. Rising impressively from the opposing French lakeshore are the Savoy Alps.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Lausanne’s old town is largely car-free, with cobblestone alleyways, sidewalk cafes, and ancient buildings

We began with a stroll through medieval old town, which is largely car-free and is highlighted by small cobblestone alleyways, sidewalk cafes, centuries-old statues and fountains and structures, old arched river bridges, mountain and lake vistas, and the Lausanne Cathedral.

Considered one of Switzerland’s most impressive pieces of early Gothic architecture, the giant, stone sanctuary was constructed from 1165 onwards. It is the country’s largest cathedral and has one of the finest stained-glass windows in Europe, dating from the 13th century.

The cathedral also boasts a night watchman, who every night since the 1400s has kept an eye on the city and shouted out the times between 10pm and 2am. At the top of each hour, he yells “C’est le guet, il a sonné dix, il a sonné dix…” (This is the night watch, the hour has struck…). I got to meet Simon Bhatt, one of a couple people who serve as “The Watchmen.” He took me on a tour of tower and his perch, some 200 ft above the ground.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Lausanne’s giant stone Cathedral was built in 1165 and is the country’s largest

“I do this because I am from Lausanne and it gives me a chance to carry on this tradition in such an amazing place,” says Simon, a part-time college student. “It feels incredible to do something in the exact same place that it has been done for over 600 years.”

Before meeting “The Watchman,” I met Francois Michel, who works with tourism for the Canton of Vaud. Francois took me to a local restaurant called Cafe du Grutli that is located in a building from the year 1340.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Cafe du Grutli specializes in local favorites such as fresh venison from the Alps

It is hunting season in the Lake Geneva region and fresh deer from the local Alps was on the Cafe du Grutli menu. I had a sampling of a local favorite called Saucisse a rotir de gibier des Grisons selon arrivage. In English this is handmade deer sausage from Grisons with Madiera sauce and cranberry jam. It was comforting and delicious.

After an awesome day in Lausanne, we retired to our room at the Royal Savoy and in the morning enjoyed an incredible buffet breakfast of fresh local fish, meats and cheeses in the hotel’s dining room.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

The lake views from rooms at Royal Savoy are memorable

In the morning we walked a couple blocks to the world-famous Olympic Museum (www.olympic.org/museum). Sitting on the shore of Lake Geneva, this incredible museum welcomes guests from around the globe who come to see Olympic memorabilia and hands-on exhibits, and learn the history of the Olympic Games, from the first ones in the summer of 1896 in Athens to the present day.
