World’s Largest Cruise Ship, Harmony of the Seas, Arrives In Southampton

With a 46-year history of innovation at sea, Royal Caribbean International is today welcoming the arrival of its newest and most dazzling ship yet, Harmony of the Seas.

Harmony of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship with a bold and unexpected line up of experiences, and many ‘firsts at sea’. An architectural marvel, it hosts the best of the fleet’s features, combining the distinctive seven neighborhood concept that Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class ships are known for, with the most popular technological features from its Quantum class ships.

Innovative features include Ultimate Abyss, a thrilling 10 story slide – and the tallest at sea; Bionic Bar complete with robotic barmen, virtual balconies which provide guests in an interior stateroom with real-time views of the destination, and VOOM – the fastest internet at sea – so guests can stay connected, stream their favorite entertainment and share their adventures.

Unparalleled entertainment will keep guests wowed with exciting high-diving, acrobatic and aquatic performances in the deepest pool at sea at the iconic AquaTheatre; an ice show extravaganza and Broadway’s hit musical Grease.

Imaginative dining in the ship’s 20 venues include the widest variety of cuisine from Wonderland, a feast for all the senses to the popular Jamie’s Italian by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Sneak Peek at ‘Frozen – Live at the Hyperion’ at Disney California Adventure Park

In adapting Disney’s “Frozen” for the stage in “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion,” the team at Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment sought out new and exciting ways to tell Anna and Elsa’s story. Among other innovations, this dazzling theatrical production incorporates state-of-the-art projections and motion capture technology to create several “Wow!” moments for the audience.

Disney team members collaborated with award-winning video and projection designer Aaron Rhyne (“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” “Tangled: The Musical”) to produce projection effects that open up the world of the story, propel the action forward and blend seamlessly with physical sets and, in some cases, the performers themselves!

That custom video wall covers 2,200 square feet and includes more than 4 million pixels. In fact, it weighs so much, the stage deck had to be reinforced with steel plates to secure it! It’s just one of the incredibly impressive set pieces that will make “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” a not-to-be-missed spectacle.

The show makes its debut May 27 in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure park.

A Photo Tour: Disney's Art of Animation Resort

Among the many resort choices you can stay at during your Walt Disney World vacation, Art of Animation is one of the most fun and vibrantly themed. The resort features themes from four different Disney and Pixar films including The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, and Cars. Each theme immerses you within its movie from large statues of characters and scenes to dramatically themed rooms. As well, the resort features large family suite style rooms in all themes except for The Little Mermaid. Today we will be taking a tour through the outside themed areas of these resorts as well as the lobby.

First on our tour is the lobby area. When you first enter the lobby to check in, you will notice a large wall that features different animation sketches and concepts from various movies. The chandelier found outside the gift shop features actual prints from there movies. The gift shop also has an inking theme to it that can be seen when looking all around the top of the walls.

Upon leaving the lobby, you dive right into the Finding Nemo area and are greeted by a view of the “Big Blue Pool.” This is the main pool at the resort and is also the largest pool on Walt Disney World property. It also allows you to listen to some of your favorite Disney music under water! Guests staying at any area of Art of Animation can access it using their magic band. The Finding Nemo area brings the movie to life and sizes you down to a fishes point of view. Walk, or swim, around and be surrounded by different characters and features from the movie.

If you head to the left of the Finding Nemo area, you will enter The Lion King area. In this area you will get lost in the mighty jungle as you are put in the perspective of a young lion. Throughout this area you will find many iconic characters including Rafiki, Simba, Scar, and even the Hyenas. some of the different landscapes and features also allow you to walk through or around them, like the elephant graveyard.

The next area places you right in the story of The Little Mermaid. You may notice a few gadgets and gizmos a plenty lying around here. You may also observe that the building and rooms themselves look different from the rest of the resort. This is because these buildings were built to be an addition to Disney’s Pop Century Resort (Right across the bridge). Disney decided to instead create an entirely new resort and theme instead, but these buildings were already completed.

The last area of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is the Cars suites. This area takes you right into Radiator Springs to join Lightning McQueen, Sally, and the rest of the gang. If it’s a little warm along route 66, you can head to the Cozy Cone pool area. This area is unique because it is the only one that represents a dry climate. This creates a completely different scheme of colors compared to the many greens you see in the other three areas.

As you can see, Disney’s Art of Animation resort puts you right in the middle of each of these movies. Whether its cruising with Lightning McQueen or Swimming with Nemo, this resort has a little bit of everything. Have you ever stayed at Art of Animation? Which area is your favorite?

Interested in learning more about Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, or any of the other resorts at Walt Disney World? Then send an email to [email protected] and we’ll begin planning your next magical vacation together.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Offers So Much More…

Just off the 405, across the street from one of Orange County’s most popular shopping destinations, sits a gem that many may take for granted.  Many have grown up having this multicultural performing arts center formally known as the Orange County Performing Art Center right in their backyar.  Now branded as the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the campus has steadily transformed into a cultural center “deeply engrained in the fabric of our community, artistically ambitious, yet accessible to all…” thriving to “make the arts matter.”  If you thought The Center just presents musical theater productions, you’re missing out.

This past week we were invited to a similar style of show of what one may find at the iconic Hollywood Bowl.  Last week The Center proudly presented Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage 50th Anniversary Concert Tour.  Featured within the Segerstrom Hall, audiences found themselves walking into a seemingly silent theater with ominous sounds of what one could gather as Outer Space.  While many of us know that Space contains no sound, the deep sounds of vastness seemed menacing building anticipation and suspense for the music about to be played.

StarTrek: The Ultimate Voyage 50th Anniversary Concert

To sum it up simply, it was a talented orchestra playing the many songs of the Star Trek universe from the early days of the original series through all incarnations to the new movies of today.  With each song scenes were orchestrated to match the music or quite frankly played as background to memorable scenes of the TV series.  I’m not really a fan of the show. I watched my fair share after getting home from school, but never really followed.  However, I can appreciate good music just as much as the next.  This performance captivated me and the rest of the audience.  I was teleported into this musical universe for two and half hours before being beamed back to my seat.

Is watching a brilliant orchestra perform on a Space Age-like set to the tunes of Star Trek not your sort of thing, that’s okay as there are many fantastic shows and musicians lined up.  While I want to showcase Newsies coming up May 17th-29th, I’ll focus on the other not so well-known shows.

Mind you there are several venues to attend.  There is of course the Segerstrom Hall, the opera house still theater that features the biggest entertainment.  However, as beautifully and cleverly designed as it is, one cannot go without noticing that gorgeous and stunning serpentine glass facade of Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.  The interior is intricately decorated with Spanish granite, a silver leak ceiling with warm wood accented walls and Swarovski crystal LED lighting topped off with 300 stainless steel pendants atop the stage, oh, and a pipe organ spanning the floor to the ceiling.

The Samueli Theater is a multifunctional space allowing for lounge type seating for smaller gatherings or special events, to risers for smaller performances.  The Judy Morr theater acts the same though with a black box-style space and can feature some of the smaller productions.

With the places spoken for, here is a list of some of the entertainment offers coming up:

Captain America Civil War Press Conference

Last month in Los Angeles Team Iron Man kicked off the MARVEL Captain America: Civil War press conference with laughs and even questions from Robert Downey Jr. himself. Producer Kevin Feige shared his feelings for the complete ensemble cast and Director Anthony Russo shared with us the flawless introduction of Spiderman in this movie.

IMG_0308

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Based on the beloved Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” stars Chris Evans (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America; Robert Downey Jr. (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as Tony Stark/Iron Man; Scarlett Johansson (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow; Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Black Swan”) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier; Anthony Mackie (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Sam Wilson/Falcon; Don Cheadle (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “House of Lies”) as Colonel James Rhodes/War Machine; Jeremy Renner (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”) as Clint Barton/Hawkeye; Chadwick Boseman (“42,” “Get on Up”) as T’Challa/Black Panther; Paul Bettany (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as Vision; and Elizabeth Olsen (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Godzilla”) as Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlet Witch.

The film also stars Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man,” “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”) as Scott Lang/Ant-Man; Emily VanCamp (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Revenge”) as Sharon Carter; Marisa Tomei (“My Cousin Vinny,” “Love the Coopers”) as May Parker; Tom Holland (“In the Heart of the Sea,” “The Impossible”) as Spider-Man; Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones; and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies”) as Everett Ross; with William Hurt (“A History of Violence,” Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk”) as Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Bourne Ultimatum”) as Zemo.

Q: Even though Civil War has this unbelievable emotional pull, were there certain technological advances that allowed for this movie to happen in the extraordinary way that it does?

Part of the popularity of big special effects driven movies is the fact that technology is such an incredibly high value. You reap the benefits if you push forward on every film and this movie has a very remarkable sequence where Robert Downey Jr. plays a 20-year-old man, which is pretty incredible. It took months and months of work on that shot. In fact, it was the last shot completed for the movie and was dropped in just 5 days ago.

Q: Can you talk about bringing Spiderman into the mix? It was so flawlessly done. Did it feel forced at all or is this one of the amazing aspects of the film?

Spiderman was very important to us, all four filmmakers. We knew we wanted to tell a very complicated story between Captain America and Iron Man, a story that went to really dark places. For us it became very important to find a way to change the dynamic in the movie by bringing in characters that didn’t have the same emotional element that the Avenger’s have with the events that unfolded, very serious and complicated events.

To bring in characters like Spiderman and Ant-Man who don’t have that emotion, it gave us an opportunity as storytellers to bring new elements into the film at a deep place in the movie. I think it balanced that big fight they have with one another at the airport.

Making his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. Playing Spider-Man is a dream-come-true for the 19-year-old Holland, who became a Spider-Man super-fan after seeing the first movie. “I remember watching that as a kid and just losing my mind,” says Holland. “It was the first superhero film I had ever seen and ever since then I’ve just been hooked. I have countless photos of me as a kid dressed as Spiderman. I have Spiderman toys everywhere and I used to have Spiderman bed sheets. So I remember when they were casting ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’—I was probably 15—I asked my agents if there was any chance. They said no, but then the third time it came around I was like, ‘Come on guys, third time lucky, can I please get an audition?’ And here I am today.”

For directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the opportunity to introduce Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” was an interesting and exciting challenge. “We had a very strong point of view of what we wanted to do with the character in this film and what we felt Marvel should do with the character moving forward,” explains Joe Russo. “We were very aggressive on the casting front, looking for the right actor, the right age. I felt it was better to go much younger and to not have somebody who was 30 playing a 16 year old. It was more important to find somebody more age appropriate that would convey that energy and that naiveté that would come from being that age and having that kind of power. We also thought it was really interesting to take that naiveté and smash it into the cynicism of Tony Stark. What better way to bring that character into the MCU than through Tony Stark?”

Next up was Team Cap taking the stage. The cast seemed very excited to be there and even began to make fun of Team IronMan.

IMG_0332

With the story of “Captain America: Civil War” taking place all over the world the production would find itself based in familiar territory, anchoring at Pinewood Atlanta Studios with various units shooting in Germany, Austria, Iceland, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Brazil and the United Kingdom during the film’s production schedule.

Captain America: Civil War is now playing in theaters.

Just Keep Swimming with New ‘Finding Nemo’ Products from Disney Parks

We have great news for fans of Disney-Pixar’s “Finding Nemo.” During recent visits to Disney Springs Marketplace and Epcot, We “found” new products featuring several favorite characters such as Nemo, Dory, Crush, Squirt and Bruce. These new items are part of a regular assortment update that takes place every few years at Disney Parks. You may recall reading a previous “Finding Nemo” article in 2012 when I visited Disney’s Art of Animation Resort at Walt Disney World Resort. Here’s a look at some new merchandise guests may find during their next visit to Disney Parks.

The updated assortment includes a host of items including apparel, home décor, pins, seasonal goods and more. One of my favorite items is the Dory-themed ear hat which I photographed outside The Seas with Nemo & Friends at Epcot.

Guests will also find several shirts for adults and kids that have new artwork created by Disney Design Group artists. The Bruce shirt seen in the first image is perfect, while the shirt with the phrase “Mr. Grumpy Gills” makes me laugh. There is even a shirt that shows you how to speak whale just like Dory.

The “Mr. Grumpy Gills” artwork was also used on a D-Tech phone case. Other “adoryable” apparel includes turtles Crush and Squirt as well as Dory.

Finally, guests will find new mugs, magnets, a mystery pin set and a detailed Dory-themed ear hat ornament.

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U Will Be Playable for the First Time at E3

Nintendo will transform its booth at the E3 video game trade show next month in Los Angeles to immerse fans in the world of the newest game in The Legend of Zelda franchise – playable for the first time ever at the show. To ensure attendees are able to truly experience the freedom of exploration the game offers, The Legend of Zelda for Wii U will be Nintendo’s focus of the show this year, and will be the only playable game in Nintendo’s booth via extended demos.

“At E3 this year, we’re treating people to an immersive Zelda experience,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “By giving attendees extended hands-on time with this remarkable game, they’ll be able to get a much deeper understanding of something new for the franchise.”

Nintendo’s kickoff to the E3 show happens at 9 a.m. PT Tuesday, June 14, when Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime introduces Nintendo Treehouse: Live, which will be dedicated to a day of live-streamed gameplay of The Legend of Zelda. This will be the world’s first in-depth look at the game, which will also include commentaries by Nintendo developers. The Legend of Zelda gameplay will be streamed from the E3 show floor via Nintendo’s channels on YouTube and Twitch, as well as on http://e3.nintendo.com. The stream will include game coverage, behind-the-scenes info and plenty of fun.

Series Producer Eiji Aonuma has said that this new installment in The Legend of Zelda franchise will be a clean break from the conventions of previous games, removing boundaries that forced players to follow a set path and introducing new gameplay that has not been experienced in previous games in the series.

While people everywhere will be able to watch The Legend of Zelda gameplay online, one lucky fan and a companion will be flown to Los Angeles to enjoy the action in person and be among the first to play the game on the show floor. Between now and May 10, Nintendo is offering a sweepstakes on Twitter for a chance to win a trip for two to E3 to play the game. Anyone who tweets @NintendoAmerica a note about what The Legend of Zelda series means to them while using the hashtags #MyZeldaLegend and #NintendoSweepstakes will be entered for a chance to win. Fans can share messages about their favorite games, characters or memories of the franchise. Nintendo will select a winner at random. The prize package includes airfare for two, a hotel stay, tickets to E3, a $500 prepaid VISA debit card. For all the details about the sweepstakes, visit http://e3.nintendo.com/#section-sweepstakes.

Walking in the Boot Steps of Bakersfield, Merle Haggard and The Padre Hotel

After the recent passing of country music great Merle Haggard, I decided to take a trip to his hometown of Bakersfield / Oildale, CA to see where it all started for him and learn more the rich history of the region. It was also a chance to stay at the legendary Padre Hotel, which like Merle, has become an iconic figure in the area.

The getaway began when a friend and I checked into a luxurious 4th floor suite at the Padre. Featuring two full size beds with Isoform mattresses, a shower/tub combo, a relaxing chair and ottoman, a large flat screen television with Direct TV, an office work station, and free hi-speed Internet, the 400-sq-ft room had all we needed for a wonderful two-night stay. It also boasted a great window-view overlooking the city below.

padreLike Merle Haggard, the Padre is a Bakersfield icon

Once acquainting ourselves with the room, we explored the rest of the historic hotel. Originally opened in 1928, the Padre began as tourist spot for travelers passing through Central California and as a mini-getaway for hard-working men and women toiling in nearby farms and oil fields. To help keep the classic memories alive, the hotel features a large mural of a cowgirl in the grand lobby, and ornate wall paper with swirly patterns of oil wells, farm tools, cowboy hats and boots, saloon girls, and other period symbols.

bel

The Padre’s decor boasts colorful reminders of Bakersfield’s fascinating past

Today, after a massive, recent renovation, the property is the place to be in Bakersfield and has become a sophisticated boutique hotel with restaurants, nightlife, wedding venues and conference facilities. The 8-story structure currently stands as Bakersfield’s only 4-Diamond Hotel.

After touring the property and enjoying a tasty chorizo burger and a pork belly Cubano sandwich at the hotel’s Brimstone bar and grill, we drove to the Kern County Museum, where thousands of local historical and cultural artifacts and 56 historic buildings are displayed on 16 beautifully landscaped acres.

The biggest current highlight of the museum is the Merle Haggard BoxCar – the old rail boxcar the Haggard family purchased in 1935 for $500. Last summer, the boxcar was relocated from nearby Oildale to the museum. On hand at the relocation ceremony was Merle and his 94-yr-old sister Lillian Haggard Rea.

boxcar

Merle Haggard’s childhood boxcar home is a museum highlight

Merle, who wrote some of the greatest country songs of all time, such as “Mama Tried” and “Okie From Muskogee,” lived in the boxcar with his sister, mother Flossie and father James, who added a couple rooms to the structure. Now rundown, with rotted wood and peeled paint, the boxcar is on display but the inside is closed to the public. It is currently getting a full facelift and will soon be open for walk-in tours.

Besides Merle’s Boxcar, the museum is packed with fascinating exhibits, such as Gold: The Oil Experience. This features giant iron pieces of actual mining equipment and buildings used in local oilfields, along with interactive displays demonstrating how oil is formed and recovered and then transformation into many products we use today. This is interesting considering Kern County provides 64% of California’s oil production, and oil production has been a crucial component of the local economy since 1895.

The Kern County Museum boasts thousands of local historical and cultural artifacts

The museum also houses the Bakersfield Sound exhibit, dedicated to the music created by the likes of Haggard, Buck Owens, Bonnie Owens, Fuzzy Owen and others; along with 56 restored structures like a general store where visitors could get a 25-cent bath, a tiny courthouse sitting above a jail, an archaic dentist office, a chuck wagon and a hotel, where meals were 50 cents.

And speaking of meals, after the museum, we drove back to the Padre Hotel for a fabulous dinner at the property’s signature Belvedere Room Restaurant. Elegant and inviting, the Belvedere is a modern steakhouse based on the classics and firmly rooted in the California cooking philosophy of using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.

steak

The Belvedere Room Restaurant is a classic California steakhouse

Our meal began with jumbo tiger prawns with Sriracha lime cocktail sauce; and Heritage pork belly with apple-golden raisin chutney appetizers, and a couple glasses of cabernet. We followed this an orange-mint sorbet intermezzo, then for a main course we split wild mushroom risotto and potato puree, while I devoured a succulent 8 oz Brandt farm, corn-fed beef tenderloin, and my friend sampled the lump crab cake with remoulade frisee. For dessert we split a decadent mudslide cheese cake.

Review: ‘World of Color’ Dessert Party at Disney California Adventure Park

Socalthrills recently had the opportunity to experience the Disneyland Resort’s latest dining package, Word of Color Dessert Party. The dining package features a large assortment of desserts, artisanal cheeses, as well as fruit.

image

The plate we were served included; grapes, brie, manchego, mild cheddar, mini chocolate mocha bundt cake, Mickey coconut macaroon,  mini French macaron, dulce de Leche filled shortbread cookie, and a mini berry tart with lime yogurt mousse. We also got a small basket with baguette slices and toasted asiago sticks for the table.

Not only do you get all these delicious treats, but the best part is that you get to enjoy it while sitting at high-top tables in a reserved area. Furthermore the selection of drinks offers beverages including champagne, sparkling cider, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and soft drinks. For children 12 and under they get the “Made with Magic” light-up souvenir cup.

Overall we thought the experience was great. Champagne, desserts, and reserved seating for the “World of Color – Celebrate!” show makes for the perfect date night for couples. If you’re visiting Disney for the first time or coming back again, this would make a great way to watch World of Color while enjoying some tasty treats and it’s worth the price.
