FX on Hulu’s “Shogun” is a feast for the eyes but a mixed bag for the mind. This lavishly adapted James Clavell’s novel crackles with the clash of cultures, boasting meticulously recreated 1600s Japan and sweeping, cinematic visuals. Its ensemble cast does solid work, particularly Hiroyuki Sanada as the stoic and cunning Lord Toranaga – a thinly veiled take on real-life shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Where “Shogun” excels in spectacle, it stumbles narratively. Cosmo Jarvis’ Blackthorne, the shipwrecked Westerner caught between warring factions, is a conduit for the audience, but his emotional arc feels somewhat rushed. More damning is the pacing; the first half burns with intrigue, but the latter succumbs to melodrama, culminating in a final battle that feels spectacular but sacrifices thematic impact for brute force.
The portrayal of Japanese women is also a sore point. While Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) is given some power amidst rigid social confines, too many women fall into predictable damsel or seductress tropes, undermining the otherwise nuanced political landscape.
“Shogun” often evokes comparisons to “Game of Thrones”, and while the scheming and occasional brutality align, it lacks that show’s morally grey complexity. There’s a clear delineation of “good” and “bad” that simplifies what could’ve been a fascinating exploration of cultural relativism.
Overall, “Shogun” is worth watching for those craving historical epics. It’s a testament to the production team’s skill, but those hoping for a true thinking person’s drama may feel like a samurai without his sword – equipped with the form, but lacking the sharpness.
The 10-episode limited series is now streaming on Hulu.

Whether you’re putting together an Easter basket for a little one, or ready for some fun in the sun—or rain!—Disney has everything you need to make it a great spring season.

This spring, for the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious, butt-kicking new chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4.
After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.
That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.
Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.
So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who gets under Po’s fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.
The film features the voice talent of returning stars Academy Award® winner Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master, Shifu; James Hong (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Po’s adoptive father, Mr. Ping; Academy Award® nominee Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father, Li, and Emmy Award nominee Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu’s former student and arch-nemesis. Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) joins the ensemble as a new character, Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves.
Kung Fu Panda 4 is directed by Mike Mitchell (DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, Shrek Forever After) and produced by Rebecca Huntley (DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys). The film’s co-director is Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). In 2008, the Academy Award®-nominated 2008 inaugural chapter, Kung Fu Panda, became DreamWorks Animation’s highest-grossing original animated film and launched a franchise that has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box office.

In the burning crucible of Arrakis, the spice-stained sands shift and the future of an empire hangs in the balance. Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited “Dune: Part Two” has landed not with a whisper, but with the thundering force of a sandworm breaching the desert’s vastness. Building upon the exquisitely crafted foundation of its predecessor, “Dune: Part Two” emerges as a triumph in every aspect: a sci-fi spectacle that pierces the eyes rattles the soul, and leaves an echo resonating long after its final, heart-stopping frame.
It is a testament to Villeneuve’s meticulous vision, and the strength of Frank Herbert’s source material, that “Dune: Part Two” doesn’t merely meet the impossibly high expectations set by the first film; it eclipses them. This is the explosive payoff, the crescendo after the operatic overture, where promises whispered on the wind are either bloodily fulfilled or shattered irrevocably.
Where “Dune: Part One” focuses on establishing the intricate web of players and the treacherous beauty of Arrakis itself, “Part Two” casts us into the inferno. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the young heir whose prescient visions hold a terrible, tantalizing future, is no longer just a pawn in a game he barely understands. Driven by a desperate desire to alter the devastating path he foresees, Paul navigates shifting alliances, bitter betrayals, and the growing burden of a messianic mantle he both craves and fears.
Chalamet’s performance has matured in step with his character. The wide-eyed naiveté of the boy duke is replaced with the haunted grimness of a young man forced into a brutal coming-of-age. Zendaya’s Chani, now far more than a spectral figure in Paul’s dreams, is a revelation. Her fierce love for Paul and her unwavering loyalty to the Fremen people are both her strength and potential vulnerability – a dichotomy Zendaya navigates with subtle brilliance.
New arrivals to this complex tapestry only deepen the intrigue. Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, daughter of the galaxy-ruling Emperor Shaddam IV, is a study in contrasts. Beneath her cool, regal exterior simmers the ambition of her Corrino bloodline and the chilling knowledge that she’s destined to be Paul’s wife, whether through politics or conquest. Austin Butler delivers a shockingly charismatic take on Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the twisted heir of the Atreides’ blood enemies. Butler’s Feyd-Rautha is both monstrous and mesmerizing, a cruel reflection of Paul’s potential darkness.
The world of “Dune” has always been one where political machinations are as dangerous as the desert itself. “Part Two” plunges us headfirst into the vipers’ nest of the imperial court and the desperate gambles of rebellion. Alliances forged in blood are broken with a whisper. Whispers themselves become blades, their echoes carrying promises of power and doom in equal measure. What’s breathtaking is that amidst the complex plotting and shifting power dynamics, Villeneuve never lets us forget the human cost. Every death, every sacrifice, every flicker of doubt on Paul’s face carries staggering weight.
To call “Dune: Part Two” visually arresting feels like an insult to the achievement on display. Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser, already a dynamic duo from their work on the first film, conjure a film of extraordinary visual power. The stark beauty of Arrakis, a brutal paradise of wind-blasted rock and shimmering, spice-laden dunes, is rendered with breathtaking detail. The immensity of the sandworms, ancient deities of the desert, is humbling in its scale – a testament to the brilliance of the creature design and the special effects team.
Yet, Villeneuve’s eye extends beyond mere spectacle. The film is rife with painterly compositions: a splash of blue-within-blue eyes against a ragged Fremen stillsuit, the flicker of candlelight on a face etched with sorrow, the vast sweep of a battle contrasted against the aching intimacy of two figures clasped in desperate embrace. Each shot is meticulously deliberate, infusing the narrative with unspoken layers of meaning.
Hans Zimmer’s score is an entity unto itself, transcending mere accompaniment to become a driving force in the film’s emotional power. Otherworldly yet primal, Zimmer’s compositions weave an auditory spell. Tribal drums thunder beneath mournful female vocals, mirroring the relentless heart of Arrakis and the keen of desert women over their lost warriors. Electronic pulses and dissonant chords intrude with increasing frequency as Paul’s visions bleed into reality, unsettling both the characters and the audience.

The annual and ever-popular in-park 5K fundraiser “CHOC Walk in the Park,” presented by Disneyland Resort, returns this summer to raise funds for Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), the pediatric healthcare system serving children and families in Orange County and throughout Southern California. The event is now in its 32nd year and will take place for the first time in July.
As the sun rises early on Sunday, July 21, 2024, enthusiastic fundraisers will begin their roughly three-mile course, winding through Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, encountering fun, delightful, and whimsical surprises before the parks open to the public.
“CHOC Walk in the Park is an extraordinary event that unites thousands of people from all over the world to help advance pediatric care, research, and education. Disneyland Resort and its cast members work tirelessly to ensure participants enjoy a memorable and magical experience. I look forward to seeing everyone on July 21, when together we will take steps to keep children happy and healthy,” said CHOC president and CEO Kimberly Chavalas Cripe.
The walk event is the most unique and magical pediatric fundraiser in the nation and brings the community together for one single goal – to raise funds for research, education, and CHOC healthcare programs in the greatest need, all benefitting Southern California children and families. Based on previous CHOC Walks, this year’s event is estimated to feature around 350-400 teams, including participants from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Japan. The beloved fundraiser also coincides with the 2024 60th anniversary of CHOC and its ongoing legacy of striving to create happy and healthy futures for children.
“We’re thrilled to bring back ‘CHOC Walk in the Park’ for another magical 5K experience inside the parks,” said Ken Potrock, president of Disneyland Resort and CHOC board member. “We’ve partnered with CHOC for over 30 years to help raise $44 million for children and families in our community, and we’re proud to continue Walt Disney’s legacy of being an active, supportive, and caring neighbor.”
“By moving the event to late July, we hope to help families join us by avoiding conflicts with back-to-school activities or planned August family vacations,” stated Jessica Miley, senior vice president and chief development officer for CHOC. “The date change will also help us avoid any liquid sunshine (like last year’s Hurricane Hilary), which was a ‘first’ for all of us during CHOC Walk.”
Event information, registration specifics, and information on joining or forming a team can be found at www.chocwalk.org.
