SeaWorld Plows Arctic Rescue to New Opening

SeaWorld

Regarded as the longest and fastest straddle coaster on the west coast, the all-new Arctic Rescue family thrill coaster is now open at SeaWorld San Diego. Park guests are enlisted by the SeaWorld Rescue Team to aid struggling wildlife in distress at the Wild Arctic habitat. Teams are equipped with snowmobiles capable of three launches upwards of 40 mph, reaching heights of 30 feet, and following 2,800 feet of track. Manufactured by Intamin, riders sit in eight rows of two people for a total of 16 people per train. With a 48-inch height requirement, this family-friendly launch coaster packs in an exhilarating punch to the growing lineup of roller coasters in the San Diego park.

Although other recent additions such as Electric Eel and Emperor can be overwhelming for most visitors to this zoological theme park, Arctic Rescue is an excellent addition to welcome and offer new and younger audiences a steady path to those bigger and higher thrills. At first glance, many may make immediate comparisons of the newest roller coaster offering to the Manta Coaster located on the other side of the park.

Manta features overhead lap bar restraints, speeds of 43 mph, a 54-foot drop, and snuggles riders inside comfortable seats with full back and headrests while allowing dangling feet. Arctic Rescue has riders lower down into a straddle position, legs apart inside feet rests, and a lap bar restraint that lowers in front of you. With this seating configuration, there’s no need to constantly lean forward like in other motorbike launch coasters found in other theme parks.

Think Disney’s TRON: Lightcycle / Run and Knott’s Pony Express with their backseat restraint, and think more of Universal’s Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. With Arctic Rescue’s seating design, riders have the ability to lean into wild turns weaving side-to-side at dramatic twists and curves.

SeaWorld has similar ride experiences with Intamin’s motorbike family launch coaster design in other properties. Jet Rescue opened in Australia in 2008. Wave Breaker: The Rescue Coaster opened in San Antonio in 2017. While both share a jet ski ride vehicle approach, all three share an animal rescue storyline that impacts wildlife. In case of Arctic Rescue, it is a spiritual successor to the jet helicopter motion simulator that previously offered a ride experience before reaching the Base Station Wild Arctic animal exhibit.

Nods to the retired attraction can still be spotted with the jet helicopter sitting on a landing pad in Arctic Rescue’s ride path alongside yellow caution signs, wayfinding signages, metal arch cover, billowing wind sock, waving flags, and minimal landscaping. The load station is even named Mission Outpost 97. Most likely a nod to the 1997 opening year of the previous ride occupant.

The station features a charming overhead lighting fixture with an aurora borealis – like effect giving riders a sense of immersion in freezing temperatures that can be found in an Arctic climate. Like its predecessor, Arctic Rescue exits into the Wild Arctic animal encounter. But not without passing a view of your ride photo and lockers for storage of loose belongings before entering the ride.

A ride or animal exhibit would not be complete without a merchandise line to commemorate and retain the memories upon your visit. SeaWorld offers an assortment of hats, shirts, mugs, tumblers, magnets, and stickers for Arctic Rescue’s opening season. In addition, a new alcoholic beverage will debut on the ride’s opening day.

The new Arctic Rescue Hard Seltzer is a custom-made seltzer created by Hess Brewing. It is a delightful fusion of real juicy raspberries and tangy lemonade, creating a harmonious balance of sweet and tart flavors. This blue-colored liquid concoction will get you revved up for any sub-zero adventure.

Arctic Rescue is only the beginning of an exciting summer 2023 season at SeaWorld San Diego. The open-air Bayside Amphitheater will debut a swashbuckling new pirate and mermaid-themed stunt show titled Pirates Ahoy: The Battle for Mermaid Cove. In light of the opening of the Sesame Place San Diego theme park, the Sesame Street area inside SeaWorld San Diego is being converted to SeaWorld Rescue Jr. And Shipwreck Reef Café is getting some much-needed TLC in preparation for a busy summer season.

Arctic Rescue is now open at SeaWorld San Diego. For more information, download the official app and/or visit their website at https://seaworld.com/san-diego/

New Slater’s 50/50 Franks Available at Ralphs Grocery Stores

Slater’s 50/50, the brand best known for their gourmet burger restaurants founded in Southern California, has announced that their new 50/50 Beef & Bacon Hot Dogs are available to consumers at nearly all Ralphs grocery stores across California. The hearty and delicious quarter pound franks are 50 percent beef and 50 percent bacon, making for THE most flavorful premium hotdog on the market.

“These half beef, half bacon hot dogs have really started to take off, and we are super excited that Ralphs has picked them up, just in time for summer and the start of grilling season,” said Jeff Gaunt, Marketing Director for BAR-S Foods Co., manufacturer of the hotdogs. “We’ve spent a lot of time developing the perfect, high-quality frank that kicks the flavor to a whole new level, and we believe we have a product that embodies the Slater’s 50/50 brand perfectly.”

“Slater’s 50/50 restaurants were founded here in California and are known for our over-the-top menu options and mouth-watering flavor combinations,” said Ernie Romo, Chief Operating Officer for Slater’s 50/50. “This hotdog product extension was a natural next move for us, and we know our California consumers will love being able to find them on the shelves at Ralphs and throw them on the grill at home!”

Slater

The robust, quarter-pound franks are bursting with bacon flavor without having to wrap a regular hotdog with bacon strips. They can easily stand alone on the grill, paired with your favorite toppings or pack a big flavor punch in smaller bite-sized portions when entertaining a crowd.

In addition to Ralph’s stores, Slater’s 50/50 Beef and Bacon Hot Dogs are currently distributed in select Kroger stores in Atlanta, Nashville, Louisville, and Columbus, Ohio, as well as other retailers nationwide. The product includes four franks per pack and retails between $5.99-$6.99 per package.

Ghost Town Alive! and Summer Nights Return to Knott’s

Ghost Town Alive

Knotts Berry Farm kicked off the holiday weekend with its unofficial start to its summer with the return of Ghost Town Alive! and Knott’s Summer Nights. Both events have proven to be popular with Knotts visitors year after year and their return usually brings in the summer crowds that stick around all summer long till these events come to an end at the beginning of September.

If you plan on attending Ghost Town Alive!, start your day early at Knott’s Berry Farm. The daytime experience begins at the park opening and concludes at the center of the park with a hoedown to culminate the experience held at 5:30 pm daily.

Spider-Man

The immersive experience that runs throughout Calico Park is a mixture of immersive storytelling and character interactions that encourage you as the park guest to play a part in the larger story being told. The story being told is an exciting election, for the new mayor of Calico.

Spider-Man

If you are coming to this interactive experience at any point on your next visit, a good reason to come earlier in the day is to involve one’s self in the ongoings of Ghost Town. You’ll want to stick around town longer than you planned, once you get involved in the larger story. Each character you interact with, and each establishment you visit in Ghost Town is an opportunity to interact with the characters who make up the town of Calico and with the townsfolk who run the town.

Spider-Man

This experience is great for kids of all ages. You could find yourself at a Town Hall meeting with the mayoral candidates, which could include the town sheriff, the town outlaw, or even the town lawyer. If you visit the Post Office you could meet with the Post Master who might ask you for your help in delivering a few packages while you’re “visiting” in town.

Spider-Man

You might even cross paths with the Town Sheriff who might deputize you to help arrest a couple of outlaws and then walk with a posse to take those outlaws to jail.

All of this concludes with a hoedown hosted by the townsfolk of Calico on the stage at Calico Park, where the new mayor is elected and you’re invited to a dance to celebrate the occasion.

Spider-Man

So be prepared to experience the best immersive experience you didn’t think needed but is just what you’ve been looking for all along when you inevitably visit! this summer. Get ready to have fun, get involved in frontier living, and learn a thing or two about surviving in the Old West.

During the evening is the start of the nightly programming that makes up Summer Nights. The summertime party that occurs nightly is an invitation to party at Knott’s Berry Farm all summer long. If you are looking to unwind after a fun-filled day or are ready to dance the night away with music offerings throughout the park or even are looking to complement either one of those experiences with a taste of some summer food, then prepare to head over to Summer Nights for this one of a kind party experience.

Spider-Man

If you are planning to enjoy live music as a part of the festivities keep in mind that there is an expansion of music offerings this year that reach as far as the New Fiesta Village at the Fiesta Village stage. With an option to travel further out into the park for music offerings, this is another experience that we would encourage you to come earlier. In Fiesta Village you’ll find music with a Latin flair, then hop over to the Midway you’ll find some Beach Boys-inspired tunes being played live on the patio of the Boardwalk Bbq.

Spider-Man

The midway of the park is where you’ll find the most familiar sounds of the summer, with rock-inspired music being played on the Calico stage just beyond the main stage which then features music from rock to pop all sorts of offerings in between. With either of these stages being on the midway, or the center of the park it is best to arrive early for the picnic-style seating in front of the stages, this set up encourages visitors to enjoy the food offerings that make up the festivities offerings of the “A Taste of Summer”. All this staging of the event and more make for a feeling that you never left town for a summer party or a bbq you might have in your backyard.

Spider-Man

If playing games out on the lawn or in the backyard is what makes for those memorable summer nights for you then be sure to visit the game opportunities along the midway. With simple summer games that are fun for all ages and most summer occasions, you are sure to find a game that suits your level of fun best.

Spider-Man

Take the time on your next visit to stop for a stroll along the midway for some classic summer fun, that you can just take in and enjoy without having to think twice if the experience will be too thrilling for your taste. If you look up on one of the roofs just beyond Charleston Circle, you’ll find a DJ there playing some of the best family-friendly club music that all ages can dance along to. All this and more can be your experience at Knott’s Summer Nights.

Fiesta Village Reopens at Knott’s with New Food and Merch

Fiesta Village
Entry from Silver Bullet

The reimagined transformation of Fiesta Village has finally opened at Knott’s Berry Farm! The refreshed land brings new Hispanic influences to rides, shows, merchandise, and food. Mariachi music, storytelling, and Bob Baker Marionette Puppet Show performances will play on the newly designed Fiesta Plaza outdoor stage.

The Peanuts gang also gets into the spirit of meeting their fans while wearing traditional garments. Previous attractions have received new paint and color schemes stringing a consistent theme throughout the land. Areas surrounding the Aztec pyramid, market, and Alebrijes Gardens offer distant sections within the land evoking a sense of discovery around every turn. Returning rides include Jaguar!, Sol Spin, Carrusel de California, La Revolución, Hat Dance, Dragon Swing, and Los Voladores. MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress will open at a later date.

Water features, mosaic tile artwork, fresh landscaping, structural enhancements, and giant brightly colorful Alebrijes add elemental touches that refresh previously stagnant areas.

The new nighttime street party, Calle Celebración, enlightens themes of family and community with color, music, dancing, stilt walkers, and oversized puppets. Set to the backdrop of moving projections and pyrotechnics atop the Jaguar roller coaster temple.

The food and drinks make a bigger and better impression now than it has in years past. A lot of focus went into upgrading the menu, locations, and seating for a more appealing dining experience. Baja Taqueria between the Hat Dance and La Revolución rides serves esquite and street tacos.

Taco proteins include fish, shrimp, beef, or mushrooms. Request the tasty taco sauce served on the side as it was a bit overwhelming. This is a huge improvement over the hot dogs that were previously part of the menu here. By the Fiesta Plaza, Papas Mexicanas will serve up carne asada fries and elote fries. Casa California Restaurante makes significant changes to the building occupants that were here.

The old arcade is now indoor seating while the store is now a restaurant serving build-your-own burritos or bowls, birria quesadillas, and tamales. The freshly made guacamole more than makes up for the extra salty tortilla chips. Regular churros and Oreo-flavored churros can now be found here. Grab a drink at the new outdoor Cantina Del Sur by the stage.

Sabor de Fiesta brings together food and games in festival booths located across from Silver Bullet. The best part is the summer’s tasting card, Flavors of Summer, is also included here. Expect to see potato and chorizo tacos, micheladas, and elotes.

Take a stroll down Fiesta Mercado to find a variety of unique and authentic shopping items. Inspired by Los Angeles’ Olvera Street, guests can find selections of Chamoy candies, hot sauces, blankets, cups, glassware, magnets, shirts, hoodies, hats, pins, personalized parasols, and zarapes. There’s even a specially designed tiki mug inspired by the Montezuma roller coaster that is limited to 500 made. Collectors best grab this Fiesta Village exclusive before it’s gone!

Fiesta Village is now open at Knott’s Berry Farm theme park in Buena Park, CA. We expect to see finishing touches being placed as the weeks go on. So it will be exciting to see what comes next and what changes are made as the crowds convene to this newly reimagined land. The bold colors, green landscaping, enhanced placemaking, coordinated themes, tasty cuisine, refreshing libations, and daily performances really do come together making the best version of what was there before. It brings even more excitement to see what comes next in the park’s future.

Rail Service Cleared to Resume Through San Clemente

Rail

The rail line through San Clemente is set to reopen for passenger rail service on Saturday, May 27, as emergency work has stabilized a hillside north of the Pier that last month scattered debris into the rail right of way below.

Metrolink, which operates regional passenger rail service, and its contractors worked with San Clemente, the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency, which operates the popular Pacific Surfliner service, and the Orange County Transportation Authority, owner of the track through Orange County, to clear the way to safely re-establish service on the track.
Metrolink and Pacific Surfliner are working to re-establish their respective services as quickly as possible.

Spider-Man

  • Pacific Surfliner is set to resume rail service through San Clemente on Saturday, as well. One earlier train (794) from San Luis Obispo to San Diego will operate late tonight (Friday). Passengers are asked to visit pacificsurfliner.com/alerts for updated train schedules.

The rail line is being reopened at the start of the Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start to summer and a popular time for travel by all modes, including rail.

Spider-Man

The halt to passenger service began on April 27, when the slope behind the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens began to slide, prompting the city to start emergency work to stabilize the hillside.

Crews have finished the bulk of that work, and Metrolink has worked with a contractor to clear debris near the track, allowing passenger service to safely resume.

All the partners, including OCTA, San Clemente, Metrolink and LOSSAN, are continuing to work together to coordinate any future work and will keep the public informed of any significant updates.

‘The Boogeyman’ Movie Review

The Boogeyman

“The Boogeyman” will make grown-ups afraid of the dark again. This is the way horror movies should be made. Based on a short story of the same name by Stephen King, the film’s tight script and pacing is suspenseful when it needs to be, heart-pounding where it wants you, and a touch of heartfelt humor for tension relief before sucking audiences back into the darkness. The film doesn’t waste a minute on pointless characterizations or pop music filler in order to retain its atmospheric mood.

The interaction between wholesome father-daughter relationships and sisterly love appears genuine and authentic enough for audiences to want to see the family dynamic through their ordeal. The monster evolves into a spiritual manifestation of the family’s trauma as it feeds on their fears and insecurities just as any iconic beast should.

“The Boogeyman” showcases the most horrific iteration of the timeless monster that has been conceived. The premise is simple enough to follow what most remember about the basics of a monster lurking in dark and enclosed spaces. Yet the nerve-wracking cinematography and engaging characters bring new light to a familiar fright. The sound design will leave the audience thinking twice hearing the voices of unseen loved ones. Mercifully, the film relies more on the unsettling building of tension rather than shocking gore and redundant jump scares.

Horrifically satisfying. Finally, a horror movie that’s worth a trip to see in theaters.  As much as you want to leave in fear, you have succumbed to staying in your seat to see what happens next. Another fine addition to the category of elevated horror.

The 20th Century Studios film has been given a theatrical release after initially being intended for streaming on Hulu. The darkened movie theater-going experience has certainly elevated the grateful potential of “The Boogeyman”. Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair play sisters in their respective roles with uncanny professionalism. Incidentally, both played major roles in the Star Wars universe on the Disney+ streaming service.

It was a delight to see them both on the big screen acting opposite of each other. The horror movie also stars Chris Messina as their desperate father. Marvel and DC cinema fans will also recognize David Dastmalchian in a significant and memorable role.

“The Boogeyman” opens in theaters on June 2, 2023. Directed by Rob Savage. Rated PG-13 for terror, violent content, teen drug use, and some strong language.

“The Little Mermaid” Press Conference Highlights Part 2

The Little Mermaid

Early pre-production on “The Little Mermaid” began in Los Angeles in 2019. During this time, storyboard artists worked closely with Marshall, producer John DeLuca and production designer John Myhre on visuals for the designs of the CG animated characters and the look of the sets. Because a significant portion of the film, specifically everything that takes place underwater, would be created digitally by visual effects supervisor Tim Burke in post-production, it was crucial that these shots were worked out in advance.

Executive producer Jeffrey Silver explains, “We started by doing pre-vis animation that calculated and designed and created the entire way that the scenes would play out, and then we looked at every shot to decide how it could best be accomplished.”

From day one, Marshall stressed the importance of the reality of the land and the fantasy of the sea. He wanted to ensure everything on land was rooted in deep reality and looked as realistic and authentic as possible so as to best show the contrast between the two worlds.

In the second part of the press conference, we had the opportunity to hear from the filmmakers and how they put this production together. In attendance were Alan Menken (composer), John DeLuca (Producer), and Rob Marshall (Director/Producer).

Q: During the World Premiere in Hollywood, the audience was losing their minds throughout this film. Like, cheering after every musical number. How are you feeling about that?

Rob Marshall: “Well, it was a dream premiere. I mean, there’s nothing like that. I mean, when you imagine what it will be on a massive screen like that in the Dolby Theater with this gorgeous audience that was just there to actually enjoy every moment of it, and it was a dream come true for all of us. I mean, it was very emotional. It’s taken us four and a half years to create this film. So to have it play like that with, you know, our entire cast was there, which we brought up on stage, which was incredible. They were on stage as well. It was just, I don’t know, it was one of the great moments in our lives.”

John DeLuca: “And I was amazed at how much they listened. ‘Cause, you know, sometimes it premieres, they just go wild and it’s just like, whooping, you know, excited. But I heard it differently last night. And I’ve seen it quite a number of times. I heard every line and every breath. They were really with it. They were really wanting to go on the journey.”

Q: John, didn’t you say that Under the Sea was the most complex thing to shoot in the film?

DeLuca: “Yes. And to conceive and shoot. And just, to have an idea of what we’re gonna do, and then how we were gonna do it. The logistics of that. I remember Rob and I kind of put it aside for a long time.”

Marshall: “I know, it was so daunting. Because there’s one live actor. One live actor in this massive production number.”

Q: It’s the song. And on this one, ’cause Ariel got to sing.

“Yes, that was the best. I mean, you know, we said, “Alan, we really need her to sing,” and he went into the piano and said, “How about this,” and, “How about this,” and –”

Q: Well, your music in this is iconic and legendary, so maybe that’s the intimidating part.

Alan Menken: “I try to filter everything through the music scene as much as possible because they should have somebody they’re really comfortable within the room who’s plunked out the notes for them, and giving them phrasing notes. And then when I give notes, I want to go through them also.”

Spider-Man

Q: Alan, so we got new music for this, which I think is fantastic. Where do you decide, like, where do these come about? How do they land in the film?

Menken: “It’s a group process. Rob and John, David Magee, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and I got together. Like first at your apartment, then at my studio. And we went through how the story’s being adapted by David, and how the structure is. And then there are the potential spots?”

“So it’s simply as simple as that. And those decisions are made, first of all, by character, by moment, but also by sequence of a score, and what’s needed at a certain moment. So we chose the moment when Prince Eric, he’s been told, “Don’t go back out there, you can’t,” and he just thinks about this girl. And it’s a love song to her, and it’s a love song to the sea. And to his uncharted waters. So his life is ahead of him. So it ends up being a really important theme throughout the movie.”

Q: That’s who you are. I don’t know if I’d call it unconventional, but they were saying the rehearsal process was so different from what they usually know in films. And I think they were saying it felt like they were making something so small, but it was so big. Like, they were doing theater work, like, stage work, it almost felt like, during the rehearsal process. Is that a signature Rob Marshall move, or is that what you knew you had to do for this film?

Marshall: “I think it’s something I always do. know, obviously, I come from the theater. the theater.”

“So there’s a process that I think you have to do. Musicals are kind of a hybrid in a funny way. Movie musicals are a hybrid of theater and film. Because you have to, you know, you can’t just walk in and start singing. You have to learn. Or the choreography. It’s like all part of it. I mean, I always feel that my job as a director is to protect the actors. Make them feel safe in a space where they can screw up and be terrible, and then get better. And not feel judged. I mean, that to me is the most important part of it. And so, it does feel small. It feels intimate. Because you’re creating. And you know what, the film is very intimate.”

“I mean, of course, it’s massive in some ways, but the scenes are, you know, in a way, it’s a small story. You know, it’s about a father and a daughter. You know, a father learning to let go, and these two kindred spirits learning to change the world and not be afraid of someone that’s different than them. And so it’s this beautiful story. And, you know, I mean, what I never want any actor to feel is sort of the pressure of the film, and pressure of the filmmaking, and the technical portions of it. Because, especially with this movie, we always talk about it, we didn’t want the technical aspects of the film to lead it.”

Working on a film with so many photo-real elements was a first for most of the department heads, but Marshall fully entrusted everyone with the building of these worlds. “Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder are played by CG animated characters,” explains Marshall, “but they do not look animated in the traditional animation sense. They are photoreal. These fantastic puppet masters worked with us so they could actually interact with the other actors so we could capture the video references for all their scenes.”

Ariel’s three underwater friends are also transformed for this new live-action adventure. Flounder is a tropical reef fish, based on a Timid Damselfish. Sebastian’s look was born from a Cuban Land Crab with specific gestures borrowed from a White Crab. And Scuttle is now a black and white diving bird known as a Gannet. Marshall says, “This was done specifically so that Ariel would only meet Scuttle underwater because, at the start of our story, Ariel has never dared go above the surface.”

Q: Can you talk about the experience shooting in Sardinia?

DeLuca:: “Oh, Sardinia. Italian and Italian and Italian and Sardinia. But, I mean, the first thing that comes to mind is lobster pasta. We looked at quite a number of islands. But we did scout a lot of places and ended up with this. To me, I love this small beach we found in Sardinia. And thankfully, Rob went along with it. And it just helped not only us in our imaginations and with the tale.”

It was not without its challenges though, and the finale scene called for over 100 extras, half in the water and half on land, which is always a challenge due to creative reasons and safety protocols. The extras portraying members of Merfolk families all came from the U.K. and were diverse in age, ethnicity, gender, body shape, and disabilities.

Locations in Sardinia included Cala Moresca, a fisherman’s wharf and cove on the Northeast coast, where the fishing village and the scenes around the castle dock were filmed. Rena Majore was selected as Ariel’s beach and was where the iconic scenes where she rescues Eric and emerges from the water onto her rock would be filmed. The rock itself was custom-made and transported to Sardinia and placed in the water at this location prior to the cast’s arrival. The carriage-run scenes with Ariel and Eric were filmed on the rugged coast of Rena di Matteu.

Q: “You have a gift with ballads, particularly for female characters. What is your approach to these characters and their emotions that inspires you to create these iconic songs?”

Menken: “You write for the moment. You write for the concept of how you’re telling a story. What is the tone of the story? What is the exact moment?”

“You set up the DNA. I have a palette of musical colors, like, you’re painting them. And then, you start to shape those colors. For instance, “A Part of Your World.” Okay, you could say that’s Ariel’s colors, but also, that figure was simply the water flowing. I was just started with. It’s just that sense of motion, and it all grows out of that.”

“And then, you know, part of it comes from also experience, of just doing it a lot for many years. You let go, and you just sort of pour into that shape that you’ve created. Oh, very important. You create [laugh] a mold, a shape. Where does the song start? Where does the song end? How does the character progress dramaturgically throughout the song? Are we gonna open it for dialogue? Everything that’s happening, the world we’re in, the palette we’ve decided to use, and then, you just go into that mold.”

“‘The Little Mermaid’ is very much a love story in many ways,” says director/producer Rob Marshall. “It is about finding your soulmate, finding someone who you connect with. And that’s what Ariel and Eric ultimately find in this film. Together they begin to break down the walls and barriers between two disparate worlds and strive to eliminate the unfounded prejudice that has always existed.”

Marshall adds, “The way we survived was as a team. We all knew we were working on something very special — an iconic story that has touched millions around the world. Like Ariel herself we all felt a drive to discover something new, something rare, something we had only imagined. It was that leap of faith we all took that not only brought us together but brought us this miracle of a film.”

“The Little Mermaid” Press Conference Highlights Part 1

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid” is Disney’s live-action reimagining of the studio’s Oscar-winning animated musical classic. Inspired by the Timeless Tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, it is the quintessential story of an outsider, and a story that speaks to everyone.

Ambitious in scale, but grounded in reality, the big-screen musical features a brilliantly talented all-star cast, including Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Noma Dumezweni as The Queen, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, with Javier Bardem as King Triton and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Set in the 1830s in and around the waters of a fictious island in the Caribbean, Ariel is a spirited 18-year-old mermaid with a beautiful voice and a thirst for adventure. She is the youngest child of King Triton, who rules the oceans from his underwater kingdom and is the most defiant of his daughters of the Seven Seas. Frustrated with the confines of her life, Ariel is fascinated with the world above the surface, but it is a world inhabited by humans, with whom Triton has forbidden all merfolk from interacting.

Ariel makes a deal with the evil Ursula, a sea witch feared by all merfolk. Ariel chooses to give up her mermaid gifts, including her siren song, in exchange for legs and a chance to experience the human world.

During a recent press conference, we had the opportunity to hear from Talent on what it was like to be part of this live-action film.

Twenty-three-year-old Halle Bailey, one-half of the GRAMMY-nominated R&B duo Chloe x Halle was cast as Ariel, the strong-willed mermaid from under the sea. Casting a young woman of color in such an iconic role was a no-brainer for Marshall. “Our goal was to find someone who was incredibly passionate, smart, vulnerable, clever, with a great deal of fire and joy,” he says. “When I first saw Halle, she was so young and sort of otherworldly, and the voice was simply angelic. Plus, she had such a deep connection to what she was singing about.” Marshall continues, “We were just looking for the best actor for the role, period. We saw everybody and every ethnicity. There really was no agenda. As a director, your hope is that an actor comes in and claims the role and says, ‘this is mine,’ and that’s exactly what happened with Halle.”

Spider-Man

Q: Ariel is the Disney princess, and now you have been bestowed that. Do you feel like you have kind of a kinship with her just any way? Do you feel like you and Ariel have things in common?

Halle Bailey: “Absolutely. I mean, I tell people all the time I feel like Ariel truly has helped me find myself and like this young woman version of me, you know, because I, well, it’s been five years of my life now.”

“From 18 to now being 23, so those are like very intense like transformative years as you’re developing as a young woman. But I feel like especially these themes of the film and what she had to go through with her passions and drive and speaking up for herself, and even though it may be scary, she went for it. I feel like those things I really try to adopt and give to Halle now. So, she’s taught me so much, for sure.”

King Triton is played by Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”). “I was especially drawn to the relationship he has with his daughter,” says Bardem, “because even though he loves her very much, it’s not always in the best ways. He needs to grow up and face what he fears the most, which is his daughter’s freedom, her independence, and that conflict was very interesting to me.”

Spider-Man

Q: King Triton has to be a helicopter parent, and you were like he’s the ultimate helicopter parent. Don’t go five feet away from me. But like what about the relationship that you all just, you know, developed with each other? Did you have a little bit of a paternal feeling over here?

Javier Bardem: “Oh, yes. Right in the moment I met her, I just fell for her. I mean, she has this thing where you just can’t help yourself but love her unconditionally.”

“So, that was done on the first day. So, the rest will be just having fun with it and enjoying the process and I feel it was easy for us just to connect and [dance?] together. And I was always mesmerized by the quality of her as a performer, let alone the singing that I knew. But as an actress, how willing and courageous she is. And in going to the places that she had to go to. And that was amazing.”

Scuttle, voiced by Awkwafina (“Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Crazy Rich Asians”), is a neurotic, dim-witted seabird who thinks of herself as an expert on all things human, and upon whom Ariel relies as a source of information. While clueless most of the time, she is a loyal friend to Ariel.

Q: Awkwafina, what does like seeing this cast, the diversity of it, just the naturalness of it, and what it means to audiences? What do you think about that?

Awkwafina: “I mean, I think that as you said, I think it reflects the world we live in. And I think that everyone deserves to see themselves on screen.”

Q: Do you feel a kinship with Scuttle?

Awkwafina: “Yes, I do feel a kinship with Scuttle. I mean, like I am Scuttle. Like after like two margaritas, you know what I mean, on a Tuesday. I mean, we have that we’re neurotic, things like that. Yeah. Yeah, I am Scuttle.”

Jacob Tremblay (“Luca,” “Good Boys”) is the voice of Flounder, a timid fish and Ariel’s best friend. Flounder is boyishly charming but is still somewhat childish and a little skittish.

Q: Were you familiar with Flounder or did you go back and like watch the film multiple times?

Jacob Tremblay: “Yeah, no, I don’t remember not knowing about the movie and not knowing the characters. So, it was cool ’cause obviously is still a big part of my childhood and I love the film.”

” I did definitely watch it quite a few times before going to film because I did wanna make sure that you know when people watch the film, they felt like it was Flounder because obviously there’s a lot of things that I had to embody like his, I guess, like his anxiety and his anxiousness. But at the same time, I wanted to make sure I made him my own, and I think that’s when like having everyone there really came in just being able to riff off each other.”

Prince Eric is played by Jonah Hauer-King (“A Dog’s Way Home”). “Eric is kind and compassionate and adventurous and spirited,” says the actor. “But when we first meet him, he’s actually quite lost. I don’t think he knows who he is, and there is a kind of churning, restless spirit in him. That is why he’s so drawn to the sea; because he is drawn to the unknown and what’s out there and not just what’s in front of him.”

Spider-Man

Q: Now, Jonah, we know being a Disney princess is a big deal, but being a Disney prince is nothing to sneeze at either. Are we ready for this?

Jonah Hauer-King: “I don’t know if I’m ready for it, to be honest, but it was, yeah.”

“But yeah, it’s a great privilege. It’s a huge honor, but I think what’s special about this is it’s all, I don’t know, the whole story, the whole film feels very grounded in reality. So, the Disney prince and the Disney princess aspect is amazing and it’s fun and exciting, but I think watching it last night made me realize that for all of us, even though we’re living in this fantasy space, it just feels really connected to the world and to the real world.”

“And the themes feel connected to the real world now. So, yeah, but who knows? I mean, being a Disney prince is weird, isn’t it? It’s kind of weird.”

Two-time Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) is Ursula, the cruel and vindictive sea witch, half-woman/half-octopus, who has been banished by King Triton for her misdeeds. As the sister of Triton, she plots her revenge and dreams of one day ruling the sea herself.

Spider-Man

Q: What was the best part of filming, and then what was the most challenging thing for you for this film?

Melissa McCarthy: “It was the rehearsal, it was the crazy 60-foot clam shell. It was trying so desperately not to cry every time you sang a melody because I was like, I don’t want her to think I’m crazy, as, like, tears are running down my face.”

“The whole process. Rob Marshall, I think we all agree, sets up this world that is like, it is like why I fell in love with plays. It feels so small and yet you know it’s this enormous thing, but it just feels like if we all do our best, like, maybe we can make a show.”

The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall with a screenplay by David Magee. The songs feature music from Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, with new lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film is produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John DeLuca, and Rob Marshall, with Jeffrey Silver serving as executive producer.
