The Real Failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story

2022 is turning out to be a thrilling year for Star Wars fans across the galaxy, bringing in a plethora of highly anticipated content through new shows, the return of fan favorites Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, as well as some well needed validation for anyone who grew up a fan of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

The media buzz couldn’t be more explosive, especially since Vanity Fair’s exclusive look into the future of our favorite galaxy far far away gave us all so much to be pumped about. The shoot included a look at all the new Disney+ showrunners coming to our screens at home within a matter of days, from Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka to Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor to Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen standing side by side as Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Streaming and Star Wars are here to stay.

The silver screen; however, will remain dark for a time. A huge player in that decision comes from the fan reception and acceptance of Lucasfilm’s vision going into this new era of Star Wars. In the Vanity Fair piece, writers got a chance to sit down and have an exclusive interview with none other than Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy.

Though the interview covered a lot of positive remarks and creative high ground, it’s clear that the current tone at the ranch is one of caution and careful planning. Reception and box office returns show, not everyone has been pleased with where Star Wars has been lead so far post the Lucas’ era. However, it’s also quite striking that in that discourse, one particular film was honed in on as a hard lesson for the studio, and one that has been the focus of media attention since the interview dropped last week.

Kennedy was prompted about recasting of legacy characters, a topic of contention in the fan community as more and more content has explored the gaps between already established parts of the Star Wars timeline. While some celebrate the idea, even going as far as fan casting their favorite choices for these iconic roles (Sebastian Stan taking the helm for Luke Skywalker for example), not everyone is on board.

There are plenty of fans who feel that the actors who made these roles so iconic should be the only ones to hold the reigns. Lucasfilm got a chance to experience that first hand with casting Alden Ehrenreich as a younger Han Solo in the second Star Wars Anthology film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Here is what Kathleen had to say about their experience with Solo and the idea of recasting in Star Wars:

There should be moments along the way when you learn things. That may have certainly been a learning moment. Some people have talked about how, well, maybe Solo should have been a TV show. But even doing Solo as a TV show without Harrison Ford as Han Solo…it’s the same thinking. Maybe I should have recognized this before. We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn’t a day I wasn’t on set where I wasn’t like, Yes—this is Indiana Jones.

Maybe I’m closer to the DNA of Indy, and always have been, than I was when I came into Star Wars, because now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that. You get excited by these things, and you want to revisit things you want. You want to have that feeling again, and you’re trying to resurrect that. I think that’s what we do even with our new characters. With Star Wars, everybody talks about a “feeling” they have about Star Wars. That’s that intangible idea that you’re looking for.

With the success of Rogue One, Kennedy’s gamble made sense. Solo seemed like a surefire way to add to the success and create a fun new adventure to hold fans over until the next Skywalker Saga installment. It would also give Lucasfilm the ability to continue to flush out gaps in the timeline to expand the Star Wars Anthology series into its own standalone saga. Together or apart, each film could fuel the fervor and give fans something unexplored, while staying safe and playing in an established universe.

Yet, the gamble came with risk. Though Han Solo is one of the most beloved characters in the canon, part of what makes him such a draw is Harrison Ford’s unforgettable performance. Similar to his other iconic persona, Indiana Jones, Ford’s DNA is intertwined with Han Solo. It’s very hard for fans to separate the man from the character.

To add fuel to the fire, Han Solo’s backstory is also very vague; which in turn creates a mystique and gateway into a fan’s imagination to fill in those gaps with whatever stories and ideas they can conjure. With that build up, comes expectation, which as we have seen in my previous discussions of the Star Wars fandom, can lead to a dangerous mix.

Solo was a mixed bag with fans and critics alike and considering the back stage drama, delays, and change in directorial vision, it’s hard to go into a film feeling as motivated and excited as we had seen with past Star Wars releases. From the very beginning of the project there was fan backlash with the recasting news and from that backlash, the studio decided to keep the project under wraps and essentially destroyed any opportunity to market the film in a way it deserved.

The confidence in the film was low on all sides, making it hard not to wonder if the film’s poor reception could have been avoided if the studio spent more time selling the idea of Solo to fans.

The lack of trailers, the minimal marketing material, and overall lack of details leading into the summer release really hurt the film. It’s clear that Solo failed to capture the same warm reception that came with Rogue One, but things could have been very different if Lucasfilm backed it with assurance and confidence. The message taken goes beyond recasting: When you want your fan base to believe in a project, you have to believe in it too.

It’s a real shame when thinking back on the initial release of the film, because Solo: A Star Wars Story is not only a good film, but hits a lot of the right marks for a quality Star Wars flick. Alden Ehrenreich is not Harrison Ford, but he still provides a great performance that is full of charm and swagger.

Ehrenreich also adds a more fresh, less cynical approach to the character, which is perfect considering Han has not endured a lot of the scrapes and setbacks that might make him a little more callous and hardened by the time we reach Harrison’s version of the character in A New Hope. You go from “I’ve got a really good feeling about this” to “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” and that polarity alone shows character development that really adds even subtle layering into an already loved character.

Ehrenreich wasn’t alone though, since the entire casting of Solo was superb, giving off a chemistry that is hard to miss. Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian was met with critical praise and has fans rooting for Donald to return to the character in future Star Wars projects. Even when looking at the Vanity Fair piece, it’s clear to see that though Glover also had big shoes to fill with Billy Dee Williams’ iconic connection to Lando, that a recast can work just fine if you are willing to give it a chance.

The smoothness and bold presence of Lando was felt, and Glover was the perfect choice to follow up on Billy Dee Williams’ portrayal. So yes, it may have been a tough pill for fans to swallow, but both carried the burden of these legacy characters well.

What is also missing from the conversation is how the revisit of these legacy characters gave us a chance to get acquainted with new characters and shining performances. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3-37 is by far one of my favorite on screen debuts in Star Wars. Her level of sass can rival that of Obi-Wan, falling right in line with the very familiar humor from the likes of K2S0 and C3P0.

L3 also gives Star Wars a chance to continue to build on its legacy of social commentary, giving a voice to challenge the status quo and call for equality and understanding. Though a staple part of Star Wars, droids directly reflect society’s struggle with identity, being treated very often as secondary citizens. Even when rewatching A New Hope, R2 and C3P0 are very rudely asked to wait outside of the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Flash forward to modern civil rights movements, L3 acts as a perfect reflection of our current struggles and continues to carry the torch from her predecessors at bringing attention to the very core themes that makes Star Wars such an enduring part of modern society.

L3 is joined by plenty of other star studded performances, bringing in inspiration and new understanding for Han. Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra gives us an opportunity to explore the depths of the criminal underworld of Crimson Dawn, as well as give Han his first major lesson in trust. Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett also provides a role model for young Han, drawing parallels to a young Indiana Jones vibe that fans got a chance to explore in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Beckett provides the example and romanticism of what a smuggler can be; someone Han can emulate and look up to. All the while, Beckett also gives Han a chance to see where he needs to stray in order to survive in the seedier side of this dangerous lifestyle. Both Clarke and Harrelson pair perfectly with Ehrenreich, creating a dynamic that really sells the base of who Han Solo will ultimately become, as well as remind fans that no matter how hard Han may try, that capacity for good will always define him in the moments where it matters most.

All tied in with a great classic film plot that mixes old heist and mobster movies with that of the spaghetti western area, Solo really was a movie that deserved a lot more recognition than it got. There are also so many fun little parallels, from Chewbacca’s ripping off of a guard’s limbs on Kessell (Remember, it’s not wise to upset a Wookie!) to Han’s approach of Lando at the end of the film, putting up Lando’s defenses as he rushes towards him.

You see that Lando uses the same approach to Han in The Empire Strikes Back. There are a lot of fun little moments that any Star Wars fan would appreciate. Ron Howard and company put a lot of love into this film, honoring the franchise history and little moments that build into these characters story arcs.

Thankfully, there are plenty of fans of the film out there, inspiring the trending movement #MakeSolo2Happen. Started by Star Wars News Net’s “The Resistance Broadcast” , the campaign has amassed a very loyal legion of Solo fans from across the globe, all hoping that Lucasfilm not only recognizes the demand for Solo, but gives the new tale a chance to be further explored in the Star Wars Mythos.

This demand is validated by the fact that Solo left a lot of open ended ideas at the end of the film. There are so many unexplored elements that could lead to some exciting content. If handled with care and confidence, both tales that follow Han and Lando, but also arcs tied into the criminal underworld would open the door to some very entertaining tales. From Qi’ra’s ascension to leading the syndicates to Darth Maul’s larger role in the criminal underworld, there is way too much there to simply toss aside.

Was Solo the best Star Wars film? No, but blaming the movie and the cast on its failure is dangerously ignorant and not the right approach. Whatever the case may be, Solo: A Star Wars Story still soars. Hopefully in the future the film will get the same opportunity for redemption that we are seeing for Ewan and Hayden’s work in the prequel trilogy.

Let Solo be a hard lesson not only for the Star Wars fan community, but also for Lucasfilm to be more open minded and receptive towards the type of content that may not be expected or fit within certain fan expectations.

Though Kennedy’s vision of moving beyond the Skywalker Saga is great, especially since the future of Star Wars will come down to creating new worlds, characters, and universes for us to explore, it shouldn’t come at the expense of projects that did their jobs well.

There’s plenty of room for different types of content in a galaxy larger than life itself, and if done right, maybe Star Wars can thrive in ways we can’t possibly imagine for future generations.

LEGO and Hasbro brings Optimus Prime to life

Leading global toy companies, the LEGO Group and Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) unite for the first time to bring the iconic Transformers Autobot, Optimus Prime, to life in LEGO® form – complete with alt mode.

The new LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime set is a tribute to the heroic Autobot leader with over 1,500 detailed LEGO pieces. Once assembled, the figure features 19 points of articulation that allow fans to convert from robot to truck alt mode and back again. This is one of the first times a LEGO set has been able to convert between two models, without the need to rebuild.

The new LEGO set will transport fans back to 1984 to when Transformers first exploded into popular culture with the original toy line and animated TV series. Modeled after the G1 Optimus Prime character, the new LEGO set includes remarkable attention to detail and features such as the ion blaster, Energon axe, an Energon Cube and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which can be stored in the chest chamber.

I am excited to see these two toy companies come together for the first time to celebrate the leader of the Autobots.

Prime Video Releases “The Terminal List” Teaser Trailer

Prime Video has released the official teaser trailer and teaser poster for the highly anticipated The Terminal List, starring Chris Pratt. All eight episodes, executive produced by Pratt, Antoine Fuqua, and David DiGilio, will premiere on July 1 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The Beach, a Lake and a Pool at The Leta Hotel in Goleta

For those who love the beaches and beauty of Santa Barbara, but want a slower paced, less touristy atmosphere, the small town of Goleta is only a couple miles up Highway 1, on the same stretch of coast known as the American Riviera.

The family and I recently snuck away to Goleta and discovered a charming, boutique hotel and a compact and walkable beach community with everything we needed for a three day, two-night stay.

Our getaway began at The Leta Hotel, where I enjoyed a free local beer upon check-in and then stepped into room 154, a light and airy California beach-inspired unit. Covered in earthy, eccentric textures and fabrics that give a nod to surf-culture nostalgia, the room was welcoming and efficient. It came with a comfy king bed, mini-fridge, large TV, table and chairs, and huge windows overlooking the property’s pool and winding paths lined with tall palm trees and rich vegetation.

After unpacking, we hit the pool area where we swam and lounged against a beautiful backdrop of swaying palms and the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains. It was a gorgeous Goleta day and we could feel the cool sea breeze coming from the ocean about a mile away as the crow flies.

From the pool we explored the hotel. Formerly known as the Kimpton Goodland, The Leta is an easygoing, California-cool hideaway tucked between the Pacific Ocean and rolling mountains.

“If your idea of the ultimate Southern California retreat is longboards, poolside cocktails and coastal cuisine, you’ve found your place in the sun at one of the best Santa Barbara hotels around,” reads the hotel website. “Here at The Leta, we have a Golden State of Mind attitude, surf-inspired décor, and eclectic accommodations, plus a passion for music shared through our vinyl record shop and live music scene. All of our eccentric, laid back touches will no doubt have you enjoying the good life, one day at a time.”

Besides the pool, the 158-room hotel features a small fitness center, a restaurant / bar, 6,000 sq-ft of meeting space, free beer at check-in, and free record players for guests to use. There is a social hour each evening with complimentary wine.

In front of the lobby there is a classic old Woody station wagon and an iconic, silver Airstream trailer. One of the property’s best selling points is its fantastic location, within walking distance to great food, and a couple miles drive to the ocean, Santa Barbara Airport, and hidden gems such as Lake Los Carneros.

We heard about Lake Los Carneros from Barry Dorsey, general manager of The Leta. He said if we were looking for a nature walk, with beautiful scenery and animals, and lots of history then the lake was a must-see.

Located two miles from the hotel, the 136-acre Lake Los Carneros recreation area boasts numerous trails, small forests, and a bridge to explore. Los Carneros Park Trail is a 1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Lake Los Carneros (https://www.santabarbara.com/activities/parks/lake-los-carneros/) is also great for bird watching. There are migrant Rufous and Allen’s hummingbirds, warblers, tanagers, and grosbeaks, who are attracted to the fruits of the shrubs planted along the pathways and around the lake. The lake itself is frequented by Soras, Great Blue Herons, Virginia Rails, and more. Anytime of year you will find raptors hunting for prey. This is a great place to watch the many varieties of ducks that migrate here in the winter.

If this isn’t enough, the lake also boasts an 1873 Victorian home named Stow House, an old Southern Pacific box car, and small train rides for kids at the nearby Goleta Depot.

After enjoying the lake, we headed back to The Leta Hotel for an afternoon swim. We then walked across the street and found Nikka Fish Market and Grill (www.nikkafish.com) for lunch. This popular local eatery serves up an exciting and eclectic seafood mix, with touches of Mexican, Japanese, Thai, and Sri Lankan spices.

For our lunch we split a bowl of Nikka Cioppino with sautéed salmon, mahi-mahi, shrimp, crab leg, scallops, clams, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, and bell peppers, in a tomato basil sauce. Served with fries or salad, the dish was delicious and memorable. We also sampled the spicy and tasty Pasilla peppers, stuffed with shrimp, brown rice, zucchini, bell peppers, and onions.

After lunch we drove 5 minutes from The Leta Hotel to Goleta Beach Park (www.santabarbara.com/activities/beaches/goleta/goleta-beach-park/). Here we found a lovely, sandy beach, with lots of free parking spots right next to the water. We also found plenty of room to toss our blanket down, relax in the sand, build castles and play in the water.

Besides great surf and sand, Goleta Beach Park features 29 acres of grass, with numerous grills and picnic tables. There is also a paved bike path at the park that goes all the way to Santa Barbara and 1,500-ft-long Goleta Pier that is perfect for fishing and strolling.

For wine lovers, The Leta Hotel is also close to Santa Barbara’s world famous wine country (www.sbcountywines.com) a region known for some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Santa Barbara County vineyards produce more than 70 varietals, primarily Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet, in seven approved AVAs (American Viticulture Areas). More than 275 wineries speckle the landscape in rural northern Santa Barbara County and line the streets of cities, towns, and villages.

Flashback to 1988: Classic animation dominated the market, fans of all ages were coming off the high of the Disney Afternoon, and Walt Disney Animation Studios was preparing to enter a golden era of animation with the Disney Renaissance. Fans of all ages reaped the benefits, with clever adaptations springing up on the small screen in ways nobody could have ever dreamed of.

Whether we look at the Indiana Jones-esque inspired adventures of DuckTales, or the high flying hi-jinks that brought Baloo of the pages The Jungle Book for TaleSpin, there were so many incredibly iconic series being created that found a way to keep these beloved Disney characters in the limelight for a new generation.

One of these legendary series of course was Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The series hit all the right boxes, being a nice mix of the classic detective genre that still held onto the classic Disney charm and antics that you’d expect from an animated short.

It was funny, it was zany, and brought in a fresh take on two of Disney’s most recognizable characters while bringing everyone new favorites like Gadget and Monterey Jack. Disney took the 80s, threw it in a blender, and brought out a product that would stand the test of time. To this Day, Rescue Rangers is still one of the most beloved Disney animated series of all time.

It’s not even a surprise that after all these years, Disney would decide to revisit the series. In a time where nostalgia is dialed up to a dominant overload, and an era where live action remakes, reboot culture, and legacy sequels make us feel like we woke up in the early 90s, this film fits right in with the audience demand. Rescue Rangers was brought back, and the question that Disney Afternoon diehards have to ask themselves is: Is Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers worth it?

To answer that question, we first take a look at the film that this film took inspiration from, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The film not only broke the fourth wall, it shattered expectations; and as a result, brought us a world where animation and live action lived side by side, creating a groundbreaking experience that set the example for animators for years to come.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was in the purest sense of the phrase, a love letter to animation of all kinds. All these years later, Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers takes up that mantle, and in essence, breaks down the fourth wall even further, giving fans another glimpse into a world where our favorite animated characters coexist in our crazy reality. The result is a stunning display of remarkable and cutting edge animation that visits all eras of the medium and features a grab bag of fun easter eggs and funny moments worth revisiting beyond the first viewing.

It also holds up a mirror to the vacuum of nostalgia, not being afraid to make fun of the very industry that created it. A perfect example of comparison would be the 90s action classic, Last Action Hero. Like the Schwarzenegger flick, Rescue Rangers plays with the commonly used tropes, gags, and cliches that help define the medium.

All the while, looking back at some of the industry’s not so successful moments and failed ideas, laughing along with us as we explore how truly weird the world of animation really is. So much has changed, and through the good, the bad, and the truly ugly, animation has been through so many iterations. It’s refreshing to get to look at it through this lens, being on the nose just enough to keep you intrigued and giggling versus running for the exit wondering why.

Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers brings the humor, and in some of the weirdest ways, provides us all some reassurance that despite all the truly bizarre things we endure, there is always a little room for the familiar to remind us that it is okay to laugh, start fresh, and enjoy the moment.

An intimate instructional documentary series, “Sketchbook” with Walt Disney Animation Studios takes us onto the desks and into the lives of talented artists and animators as they teach us how to draw a single iconic character from a Walt Disney Animation Studios film. Each episode focuses on a single artist illustrating a character that either they helped create or inspired them to want to be an artist at the Studio.

As we learn the steps to drawing these characters, we also discover that the artists each have a unique story to tell about how they made their way to Disney and their chosen character. From the creators of “Chef’s Table,” this exclusive experience will give viewers of all ages a new understanding of how these beloved characters come to life on-screen while introducing them to a new cast of real-life characters along the way.

Gabby Capili’s path to Disney Animation began at a young age when she saw her first Disney film in a theater with her father, “The Emperor’s New Groove.” As Gabby teaches us how to draw her favorite character from the film, “Kuzco,” she also shares the importance of following your instincts and being free to let life guide you where you belong.

Frozen “Olaf”
While teaching us to draw one of Disney Animation’s most beloved characters, “Olaf” from the worldwide hit “Frozen” films, Hyun Min Lee shares the joyful wonder of the character and how she channeled personal loss into being a guiding light in her career in animation.

Aladdin “The Genie”
Legendary Disney animator Eric Goldberg guides us through the steps of drawing his most iconic character creation, “The Genie” from “Aladdin” while learning along the way the levels to which Robin Williams impacted the character and its animation.

Peter Pan “Captain Hook”
Growing up in South Korea, Disney animator and character designer Jin Kim was always fascinated by the villains of Disney’s films. As Jin teaches us to draw “Peter Pan’s” “Captain Hook” we learn that his journey to America and working at Disney almost didn’t happen because of his colorblindness.

Encanto “Mirabel”
Disney Animation story artist Samantha Vilfort teaches us how to draw one of the Studio’s newest characters, “Mirabel Madrigal,” from the award-winning hit film “Encanto.” Through her story we learn that her connection to Mirabel’s struggle of being different from everyone else in her family hits close to home.

The Lion King “Simba”
Storied Disney animator Mark Henn teaches us how to draw one of his favorite character designs, “Young Simba” from “The Lion King.” Through Mark’s story, we learn the importance of never giving up on your dreams, even in the face of rejection.

Live theater is back and better than ever in Cerritos after a two year absence. The audience and especially the cast and crew of this state-of-the-art facility is ready to stop the presses and knock your socks off with this high-energy spectacular.

Based on the true story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 and the 1992 Disney live-action musical film of the same name, this family-friendly production centers on Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of being an artist far away from New York City for Santa Fe. When publishing giant, Joseph Pulitzer, raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack and his fellow newsies band together in protest with the help of a new reporter, Katherine, making New York wake up to the power of “the little man.”

It’s a classic and timeless tale of David vs Goliath. It’s a fascinating set of circumstances when a real-life event turned into an underappreciated live-action film musical with so much love and devotion from fans that found new life on stage. The behind the scenes story is just as fascinating as the story audiences will adore again and again. There’s no challenge the “Newsies” have yet to face and has overcome. There are even members of the cast that have waited two long years to be able to perform this show for fans.

Production designs consists of brick housing for the wings of the stage and metal scaffolding center stage. The scaffolding is manually pushed in, out, spins, and manipulated to fit the required settings providing the illusion of fire escapes, fenced gates, theater seating, backstage rigging, dreadful housing, and may appear limited at first glance, but the transfiguration and performers sell the space.

Several occasions call for the stage to open up for Medda’s stage show, Pulitzer’s office, and local restaurant. Thankfully projections are limited to a rooftop backdrop and animated chalkboard signage as the stage relies more on showcasing the performers interacting with the practical applications of the talented design team.

“Newsies” stacks up an impressive cast of performers who deserve front page news. Dillion Klena as dreamy “Jack Kelly”. Charming looks and deviant voice can only take him and his cohorts so far. Allison Sheppard as the sweet writer “Katherine”. Is her alliance a good sell? Norman Large as nefarious “Joseph Pulitzer” stirs up trouble retaining his power and influence.

The audience favorite and show-stopping numbers with “Carrying the Banner”, “Seize the Day” and “King of New York” will want to make you jump out of your seat to join the cast in flips, spins, and kicks. The gravity-defying acrobatics whisks the audience into a heart-pounding whirl of joy. You’ll buy into and eat up the irresistible toe-tapping, high-energy of “Newsies”. Outperforming the movie and surpasses the convenience of streaming services. This show is meant to be experienced live on stage with an excitable audience.

Disney and Pixar’s New Feature Film “Elemental” Details Revealed

Pixar Animation Studios revealed details about its 27th feature film, “Elemental,” which will release on June 16, 2023. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Partly Cloudy” short) and produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Cars 2”), the film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together.

The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

“Elemental” is an original film inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director.

“We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to ‘Elemental.’

“Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
