Theatre Review: ABT Forward

What an experience! If you enjoy an emotional whirlwind (in a good way), chasse down to Costa Mesa to see American Ballet Theatre’s ABT Forward at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, now through March 19. ABT Forward is comprised of three ballet pieces from different choreographers, each with stellar principal dancers and compelling lighting and costume design. The first two pieces were very poignant and emotionally complex in their messaging—the audience still raw from a heartfelt dedication at the beginning of the show to the people of Ukraine, as some of the dancers have family there.

The first, Bernstein in a Bubble, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky and featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein, was choreographed in New York City in a Covid-19 quarantine bubble, so inspiration for the emotion was clearly close to these dancers from its initial digital World Premiere in 2021. Bernstein in a Bubble was beautiful, set to Bernstein’s 15-minute composition “Divertimento” and using deliberate costuming color choices to spotlight individual principles.

To me, each movement in Bernstein in a Bubble, echoed the many nuances and facets of navigating relationships in pandemic quarantine times. Such relationships were complicated at times, and the interactions between the dancers portrayed this perfectly through their movement. My personal standout memory from this piece was “Blues” danced by Catherine Hurlin and Aran Bell. Bell’s movements were especially awe inspiring in his stage presence and attentiveness to his partners throughout the performance.

Second, Single Eye, a world premiere choreographed by Alonzo King, felt like an impactful and thought provoking look at climate change. Set to poignant new music from Jason Moran, this piece is sure to pull at your heartstrings. Set and Costume Designer, Robert Rosenwasser, uses muted earth tones and the juxtaposition between skintight and flowy costumes to portray the tumult of climate impacts through stunningly beautiful movements overlaid by intense music.

The lifts throughout this piece were breathtaking, and the emotion portrayed truly evoked joy and suffering. This is a piece you do not want to miss, as this is its world premiere in a time where such a message is more impactful than ever. In Single Eye, your biggest takeaway will absolutely be the stunning principal solo by Calvin Royal III, as well as the tense energy of the piece as a whole.

Lastly, ZigZag, choreographed by Jessica Lang, was an uplifting and fun end to the show. Originally having its world premiere in October 2021 at the David H. Koch Theater in New York. This piece was certainly the crowd favorite. Buttoning up the performance in a delightful jazzy number against a high contract backdrop, ZigZag was a high-energy and funny Broadway-style performance and a love letter to Tony Bennett, even featuring some of his artwork thanks to clever scenery design by Derek Mclane.

The opening number “What the World Needs Now” was adorable and heartwarming. My absolute favorites were “Springtime in Manhattan” beautifully danced by Devon Teucher and “Blue Moon” danced by Joo Won Ahn.  Costume designers Wes Gordon and Carolina Herrera did an amazing job with the fun, high-contract costumes used in this piece. ZigZag frankly didn’t feel long enough, I could have watched an hour of just this number.

Overall, this was an emotional journey I am grateful to have been on. The show is absolutely stunning, and the dancers are truly top of their class. After the last few years, we mused that it was just really nice to hear the sound of pointe shoes on a stage again. If you are even thinking of coming down to see this performance, do it. It is one of the great demonstrations of human emotion and artistry.

Knott’s Boysenberry Festival 2022 Preview and Tastings

Knott's

Knott’s Boysenberry Festival is back! The annual theme park food event returns March 18 to April 24, 2022. This year’s limited-time event features more than two dozen new savory foods, specialty desserts, and thirsty drink selections featuring the boysenberry as the prime sweet and tart fruit ingredient. But don’t worry, some old favorites return as well such as the boysenberry meatballs! We had the opportunity to sample just a few of the many delicious options. Ready?

Turning Red

Knott’s did not skip out on the gooey cheese factor ratio. Mix in the spicy chili to encompass the mac with more breathtaking flavors to the crunch of the Fritos chips and you have an instant favorite. Who doesn’t love Fritos?

Turning Red

This open faced sandwich is, to say the least, quite a mouthful. This would be a prime candidate to split amongst friends and family as the item on its own can be too heavy for one person alone. Didn’t really notice the boysenberry filling. But the bacon jam stood out.

Turning Red

All yes. A returning favorite for many, including myself. A boysenberry festival would not feel complete without the mouth-watering goodness of the boysenberry meatballs. This demands to be on everyone’s must-try list.

Turning Red

The chicken-less patty has a texture comparable to an imitation patty. Which is exactly what it is. At least this helps bump up the vegetarian option. The boysenberry jam contributes to the flavor.

Turning Red

Essentially and california sushi roll with boysenberry aioli. Although just fine on its own, compared to other surrounding tastings, unfortunately would be significantly low on the must-try list.

Turning Red

Another disappoint for the taste palate was the chicken dumplings. The wonton was on the mushy side and the chicken itself was bland and tasteless with little to no flavor. An easy skip unless you really like rice.

Turning Red

Longtime, eagle-eyed Knott’s Berry Farm fans may be delighted to spot the types of berries included with this lemonade drink. The boysenberry is a hybrid of blackberries, logan berries, and raspberries. So not only a fun sweet drink, but appropriately educational. It was delicious.

Turning Red

Crunchy yet moist, how could you go wrong with a brownie? The only way to make this sweet treat even better is maybe with some ice cream. But this dessert stands on its own.

Turning Red

There’s a lot of mousse and little cake to be had. But no complaints here. For whatever reason, slicing this cake with a knife felt pretty satisfying. Can absolutely be shared with two or three persons.

Knott's

The pie bar is perhaps the cream of the crop when it comes to texture, portion ratio, and sweet but not overwhelming flavor. The crunchiness of the crumbs with the smooth pie filling begs to swim in your mouth.

Checkout the food spread for more items waiting to be featured during the festival:

Knott's
Boysenberry Seltzer near an open fire

The carbonated refreshment retained its bubbly flavors. Surely to be a new favorite given the growing popularity of flavored sparkling water brands.

What’s a food festival without some merchandise to go along with it? There’s both edible and wearable souvenirs to be picked up.

A great way to indulge in the new boysenberry food items during the festival is by purchasing a tasting card priced at $50 (or $45 for season pass holders). The tasting card will offer six tastings from a selection of 25 boysenberry-inspired dishes and drinks. A variety of signature boysenberry items will also be available for purchase a la carte. Tasting cards are available at Knotts.com or at the theme park.

The Boysenberry Festival is included with admission to Knott’s Berry Farm or with a special Knott’s Hotel Boysenberry Package that includes overnight accommodations steps from the park, a tasting card, parking and more. Additional costs apply for food tasting experiences within the event.

Disney and Pixar “Turning Red” Press Conference

Turning Red

This week, Disney and Pixar’s latest offering Turning Red is premiering exclusively on Disney+ March 11.

Turning Red

In Turning Red, we meet 13-year-old Mei Lee whose carefully constructed life of dutiful daughter to her overbearing mother Ming comes completely undone with the advent of puberty.  In addition to the typical changes which come to her interests, body, and relationships, Mei gets an extra level of difficulty when her emotional volatility starts manifesting as a transformation into a giant red panda.

As Mei learns what it means to grow older and decides what sort of adult she wants to be, she must do it while navigating by a mother who refuses to let anything change the tight relationship they have in place, and the rising passions of the teen heart that gives preference to her friends, freedom, and 4-Town.

Turning Red

To discuss the making of Turning Red, some of the filmmakers met for a virtual press conference to talk about the characters, tiger moms, and puberty.  The first half was made up of voice talent Sandra (Ming) Oh, Rosalie (Mei) Chiang, Ava (Miriam) Morse, Maitreyi (Priya) Ramakrishnan, and Hyein (Abby) Park while the second half featured director Domee Shi, producer Lindsey Collins, and screenwriter Julia Cho.

Turning Red
FRIENDS FOREVER – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee, a confident-but-dorky teenager with a tightknit group of friends who are passionate about a boy band called 4-Town. Featuring the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Hyein Park as Mei, Miriam, Priya and Abby, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Press Conference highlights:

On their characters:

Morse:  “Miriam is the best friend that you could ever want. She’s funny, she’s always there for you, she’s a party animal, and she just always knows how to cheer you up when you’re down.”

Ramakrishnan:  “Priya is pretty sarcastic, dry, very deadpan…but you know what?  She’s really cool.  I think she’s one cool cat.  And, yeah, she’s always down to clown, but always with a cool attitude.”

Park:  “Abby’s like this little ball of energy–very loving.  Very passionate, but comes up a little too explosive at some times.  I would say she loves her friends so much, especially when they’re fluffy.”

Oh:  “I play Ming, Mei’s mother, who is…I’d like to call her a hypervigilant, loving mother.  We basically go through this change in our relationship…a natural change between mothers and daughters when daughters have to become their own independent people.”

Chang:  “I voice Meilin Lee.  She is a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian who’s confident, ambitious, a little dorky, and a bit of an overachiever.  In this movie, she goes through these huge changes and she’s dealing with this, but at the same time, she doesn’t want to lose herself…as well.”

Turning Red
MIDDLE SCHOOL MAYHEM – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee, a confident-but-dorky teenager, is surviving the mayhem of middle school with a little help from her tightknit group of friends. Featuring the voices of (from left to right) Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, Rosalie Chiang as Mei, Ava Morse as Miriam, and Hyein Park as Abby, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

On dispelling negative female friendship tropes:

Park:  “…Because I’m a story artist at Pixar too…it is actually very important.  When we finally got the chance to make this female friendship, it was very important that it was authentic.  So, Domee talked a lot about her own experiences with her friendships, and how she would hate to add on to those tropes…So we actually shared a lot of different stories of the moments that we love in terms of female friendship.  Then she actually asked a lot of different people within the studios too, to get a really, authentic insight on how girlfriends are.”

Oh:  “I’m just gonna jump in.  I think that question is extremely important, because, having young women and young girls in my life, watching television and films with them over the years, you just realize I don’t know who sets this up that girls are like this.  Because I don’t think it’s very true…I think this is an extremely good representation of deep friendships, and the highs and the lows.”

Ramakrishnan:  “Yeah, but also on that, I think with TV and film, we always portray that your love interest is the one that you should be closer with.  You know, like, that’s, the real bond.  That always made me sort of skeptical, because wouldn’t the childhood best friend know you better?”

On Tiger Moms:

Oh:  “…I’m also not afraid of that concept of tiger mom.  I mean, I love my mom, and she’s a fierce, fierce person.  Tiny.  Tiny, but fierce.  You know, I actually do have something that I posted a very long time ago on Instagram because it was such an unbelievable quote that my mom said in the kitchen.  I had to write it down on a  Post-It, and then I put it up on Instagram.  Basically, she said (I’m not joking) ‘If only you were neater, I would love you more.’

“I happen to have a really good relationship with my mom, and I know not everyone does, but I do, and…I can’t stop her from being herself and I’m not gonna stop her, and I’m gonna enjoy her…So–I’m not gonna do what she wants me to do because that’s just not me, but there, within that is that pull that we are always having, I think, with our mothers and with our Asian mothers that it’s very, very difficult to satisfy them.”

Turning Red
MOTHER, PLEASE! — Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red” introduces 13-year-old Mei Lee and her mother, Ming. They’ve always been close, so when Mei begins showing interest in typical teenager things—like boys, for example—Ming is a little (or a lot) tempted to overreact. Featuring Rosalie Chiang as the voice of Mei Lee, and Sandra Oh as the voice of Ming, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

On Pixar Easter Eggs:

Collins:  “There’s a lot of ’em in there.  I mean, there’s all the standards…

Shi:  “We have Luxo ball.”

Collins:  “You know, we have a Luxo ball in there, we have A113 in there…I don’t wanna spoil all of ’em, ’cause I mean…you gotta watch it.  We have a couple in there that are super fun, though, that are from the Spark Shorts.  You see Pearl in Mei’s desk and there’s…a Burrow bunny.

Shi: “…Bunny on a notepad.”

Collins: “Yeah.  And then we also obviously have, as we always do, a nod to the next film up…Obviously, ours is a nod to Lightyear, which is coming up, and if you look carefully, you can actually see that one on Miriam’s skateboard.  So yeah, they’re all in there.  You just
gotta look.”

On normalizing female puberty:

Shi:  “Why was it ever not normal?”

Colllins:  “…It’s not even Pixar.  It’s just not shown…ever.”

Shi:  “But it never felt like, when we came up with it…it didn’t feel like a big deal.  It was funny, and it felt real.”

Cho:  “Well, it feels very timely, ’cause I think we are living in this cultural shift…where it has gone from being something to be embarrassed and ashamed of, to being really embraced.  I mean, there are graphic novels now that are all about it, and, my daughter is reading books, and it just feels like this whole new generation, for them it just is normal.  And so to write a film that reflects that–I love it.”

Turning Red
GIANT PROBLEM – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee “poofs” into a giant panda when she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS). Featuring Rosalie Chiang as the voice of Mei Lee, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

On what the audience can takeaway:

Shi:  “That was the goal for making the movie.  To make it for the 13-year-old me, who was like what’s happening to me?  No one’s telling me anything.

Collins:  “I think one of the worst things about going through some of this is how alone it makes you feel. Like, ’cause it feels so foreign, and so sudden, and so personal, and a little out of control.  You feel like you don’t quite understand your own behavior.  You know, you’re supposed to be the expert on yourself, and it feels very weird and you feel off-kilter.

“And so, hopefully, this movie will kind of dispel that, and be like, no, no, no, everybody’s feeling this way when they’re going through it.  Either they felt it before, they’re about to feel it, or they’re actively feeling it right now.  And it’s actually super normal.  It’s part of growing up, and it’s part of you becoming an adult.  All of these weird feelings are actually a huge evolutionary growth moment in your life, and it’s really okay.”

Cho:  “I think that stepping into a Pixar project, I did have this sense of This is someone’s collective generational memory right?  That is the way I’ve been touched by Pixar movies, and the way my kids are touched by them.

“And I think that the thing that I’m proudest of, is that we created, we hope, a film that makes anyone watching it, girl or not girl, kid or parent, feel seen and understood. For me, that was always the goal.  Fingers crossed, we landed it.”

Turning Red

In case you missed it, here’s the trailer for Turning Red:

Turning Red streams on Disney+ starting on Friday, March 11th.

Creating the Look of Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red”

Disney

On March 11, 2022, Disney and Pixar’s 25th feature film Turning Red by director Domee Shi will release exclusively on Disney+.

Turning Red gives us a look at the trials 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) undergoes as she navigates the treacherous route of adolescence between childhood and teenage years with the additional complications of an overly-attached mother, embarrassing emotional and physical changes, and a new tendency to Hulk out into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited.

Disney

Recently, Socalthrills.com was invited to take an early look at Turning Red and hear from some of the filmmakers on a virtual press day.  Part of the session was devoted to describing how the film got its unique character design and animation style.

Disney
Rona Liu is photographed on March 22, 2018 at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, Calif. (Photo by Deborah Coleman / Pixar)

Production designer Rona Liu spoke a bit on the cultural references–pop and otherwise–that informed the stylized world of Turning Red.

On constructing the style of Turning Red:  “We (Lui and Domee Shi) wanted to put into the movie all of the things that we loved at that age.  So we asked ourselves, what influenced our aesthetics when we were 13?

The answer was a mix of East meets West. Our teenage years were filled with best friends, boy bands, punky music videos, and glitter accessories.  We also watched a lot of anime movies and T.V. shows, and we wanted to mix in that chunky cute design sensibility, expressive character designs, and poppy color palettes.”

DisneyTURNING RED concept art

On character design:  “Since this story centers around Mei’s relationship with Ming, we wanted to make sure that they visually contrast each other.  Their colors give them a
huge statement, so we made sure that Mei is fire red and Ming is emerald green and that they sit on the exact opposite sides of the color wheel.

Disney
TURNING RED

Mei panda symbolizes all of Mei’s intense feelings, so it’s important that she feels cute but also gives the vibe that she is really messy and she doesn’t have it all together.  We made her figure round and chunky, and her fur is ultra-fluffy, but also comfy in areas to show that she’s not perfectly groomed.  We even designed her whiskers to be uneven and crinkled, and to give the vibe that she’s a magical red panda, we gave her little swirls on each arm.

Disney
TURNING RED

Mei human is a confident dork. For her, we looked to ourselves–the chubby cheeks that we had as teens, our sparse eyebrows, and the way that we have moles sprinkled all across our faces.  We gave Mei a pink Peter Pan collar shirt with a thick-knitted cardigan, so she looks like mom’s good girl, and then a denim skirt to give her that early 2000s flair.

We look towards anime for inspiration for her multitude of expressions: Stars in her eyes when she is amazed, giant droplets of tears when she’s sad, and pupils that can shrink down to a dot when she panics.

Disney
TURNING RED

“That’s the complete opposite of how Ming comes across. She’s controlled and elegant with a graceful beauty mark placed under her left eye to contrast all of the random moles on Mei’s face.  She’s dressed in a punchy, emerald green power suit over a slimming qipao dress with perfectly drawn red lips and thinly plucked eyebrows like the ladies from 1960s Hong Kong.”

On the setting:  “Even though we’re going for a squatter scale to fit our character designs, we’re still keeping believability in structure and construction.  We’re reducing complexity so that it’s never diverting attention away from our characters, but everything that you see in the set would function as it would in the real world.

We created a fantastical Toronto and tweaked the real world to fit our design needs while still keeping the city instantly recognizable.  One of the things we constantly said to ourselves was instead of going for photorealism we are going for believability in all aspects of our designs.”

DisneyTURNING RED

Finally, animation supervisors Aaron Hartline and Patty Kihm walked us through some of the processes they went through to create the specific anime-influenced animation style for Turning Red.

Disney

Disney
Patty Kihm is photographed on January 24, 2018 at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, Calif. (Photo by Deborah Coleman / Pixar)

Kihm:  “The first thing we do as animators is immerse ourselves in who the character is, so we can take those traits and find the performances that are true to those characters.  We learned that Mei is an overachiever, straight-A student, but she’s also an awesome uncompromising 13-year-old girl…about to embark on the roller coaster ride that we call puberty.  We wanted her to be full of enthusiasm, but we also wanted her to be somewhat awkward and clumsy to reflect that she’s still in her adolescence.

“We wanted to tap into Domee’s passion for the two genres of animation that she loves, anime being the east and Pixar Disney animation being west.  Turning Red lives somewhere in between these styles.

We often referenced anime eyes on this film, and one of the great things about anime is that it’s not afraid to push the character designs to an extreme.  The character’s eye shape can be drastically different depending on the mood of the character.”

Disney

Hartline:  “The next thing is Mei’s friends, and they are a huge, huge part of this film.  They are her besties, her crew, her ride or die.  We set up a role for each of these friends:  So, Miriam, in the upper left there–we always wanna show off her dorky braces.  Abby always has angry brows, so even if she’s happy, those brows are down and intense.  And Priya, she always has half lids.

We would have discussions in the film, ‘can we just raise it a little bit?’  ‘No.’  It’s always half lid the entire show. To show that the girls are tight, that they are one, we literally move them as one. They would start and stop, all four of ‘em, at the exact same time.”

Disneyland Resort Nighttime Shows Return April 22 and May 28, 2022!

Disneyland

Disneyland Resort proudly presents the homecoming of four beloved nighttime spectaculars and a new grand finale to the “Main Street Electrical Parade” for its 50th anniversary. On April 22, 2022, the “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular will ignite the night at Disneyland Park, and “World of Color” will return to Disney California Adventure Park. “Fantasmic!” is preparing for its return to Disneyland on May 28, 2022.

Disneyland

Since Disneyland Resort reopened in April 2021, guests have been able to rediscover the wonders and magic of returning entertainment – such as Jambalaya Jazz in New Orleans Square at Disneyland and “Disney Junior Dance Party!” at Disney California Adventure. New experiences have been introduced, too, like the Raya encounter in Redwood Creek Challenge Trail and Celebrate Soulfully entertainment throughout the month of February. Each of these offerings highlights the incredible momentum at the Disneyland Resort as part of its phased reopening.

A guest favorite since its debut in 1972, “Main Street Electrical Parade” features cherished floats such as the classic train and drum unit and Elliot the Dragon. With an electronic musical score based on “Baroque Hoedown” by Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley, this parade was the first to play unique musical arrangements synchronized to each float unit. The lineup of floats has changed over the years, and Disney parks around the world have presented evolving versions of this iconic parade.

Disneyland

To honor the milestone 50th anniversary of “Main Street Electrical Parade,” Disney Live Entertainment will introduce a magnificent grand finale that celebrates the theme of togetherness in an all-new float. This universal theme is reflected in the creative concept of the grand finale sequence, drawing inspiration from the original design of classic “Main Street Electrical Parade” floats and Mary Blair’s iconic art style on “it’s a small world.”

The seven-segment float stretches 118 feet in length and brings to life more than a dozen Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios films, making it one of the longest and grandest sequences in the parade’s history. These stories will be interpreted in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sound, with unique representations of beloved characters as animated dolls.

Disneyland

Guests along each side of the parade route will see different stylized scenes from classic and contemporary favorite stories such as “Encanto,” “The Jungle Book,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Aladdin,” “Coco,” “Mulan,” “Brave,” “The Princess and the Frog” and more. The finale also pays tribute to the parade’s heritage with the return of the Blue Fairy character from “Pinocchio” and a unique, 19-foot-tall representation of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

“World of Color” at Disney California Adventure brings animation to life with powerful fountains that create an immense screen of water. Combining music, fire, fog and laser effects with memorable animated sequences, “World of Color” floods the senses and immerses audiences in some favorite Disney and Pixar stories, including scenes like WALL-E and Eve zipping through the cosmos, Pocahontas exploring just around the riverbend and Jack Sparrow battling on the sea. The mega-scale spectacular is presented on a massive “stage” of water, color and light that is bigger than a football field and encompasses all of Paradise Bay. Plus, the powerful fountains can send water to heights ranging from 30 feet to 200 feet – higher than the top of Pixar Pal-A-Round!

Disneyland

The inspiration for the show came from Walt Disney himself, and “World of Color” is tied together by a soaring musical score that includes familiar Disney melodies and a contemporary version of the 1960s television theme for “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color,” originally composed by Richard B. and Robert M. Sherman, the Oscar®-winning composers of “it’s a small world,” “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” and many other iconic songs for Disney.

“Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular is a street-to-sky celebration filled with sparkling pyrotechnics and immersive projections that envelop guests in a breathtaking journey with surprising special effects. Main Street, U.S.A., and a few other spots in Disneyland become a magical canvas, transporting guests from an Anaheim orange grove into the worlds of timeless Disney and Pixar stories. “Disneyland Forever” also features two original songs: the theme “Live the Magic” and the inspiring closing song “Kiss Goodnight,” written by Disney Legend Richard B. Sherman.

Disneyland

“Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” will be available for a limited time at Disneyland. From April 22 to late spring, “Disneyland Forever” will perform Fridays through Sundays, and the “Mickey’s Mix Magic” projections-only show is scheduled Mondays through Thursdays. “Disneyland Forever” fireworks will then run nightly in the summer. “World of Color” will return to its regular schedule upon reopening.

“Fantasmic!” lights the night beginning May 28

Celebrating its 30th anniversary at Disneyland in 2022, “Fantasmic!” is Disney’s longest-running nighttime show. “Fantasmic!” is an emotional extravaganza of colorful Disney-animated film images, choreographed to an exciting musical score and highlighted by the 45-foot-tall, fire-breathing Maleficent dragon. The waters of the Rivers of America come alive as Mickey Mouse dreams he is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and faces some of Disney’s most dastardly villains, using the power of his imagination to save the day.

Along the way, fantastic events and images as seen in Disney films like “Fantasia,” “The Jungle Book,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and more come to life with live performers, character appearances, enhanced special effects and pyrotechnics.

Disneyland

“Fantasmic!” will return to its regular schedule beginning May 28.

It continues to be an incredibly exciting time at the Disneyland Resort with the return of these nighttime spectaculars and an entertaining slate of other fan-favorite offerings.

Guests may view the latest entertainment details and schedules at Disneyland.com and the Disneyland mobile app.

Disney Launches New Business to Develop Residential Communities

As more and more fans look for new ways to make Disney a bigger part of their lives, the company today announced plans to introduce Storyliving by Disney, vibrant new neighborhoods that are infused with the company’s special brand of magic. These master-planned communities are intended to inspire residents to foster new friendships, pursue their interests and write the next exciting chapter in their lives—all while enjoying the attention to detail, unique amenities and special touches that are Disney hallmarks.

The first Storyliving by Disney community will be built in Rancho Mirage, in California’s Coachella Valley—a location where Walt Disney himself owned a home and would spend leisure time with his family. Additional locations in the U.S. are under exploration for future development.

Disney

“For nearly 100 years, Disney has shared stories that have touched the hearts and minds of people all around the world,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “As we prepare to enter our second century, we are developing new and exciting ways to bring the magic of Disney to people wherever they are, expanding storytelling to storyliving. We can’t wait to welcome residents to these beautiful and unique Disney communities where they can live their lives to the fullest.”

Disney

At each location, including some neighborhoods for residents ages 55+, Disney Cast Members trained in the company’s legendary guest service will operate the community association. Through a club membership, Disney will also provide access to curated experiences, such as wellness programming; entertainment ranging from live performances to cooking classes; philanthropic endeavors; seminars and much more.

Disney Imagineers will play a key role in developing the creative concept for the communities, working in conjunction with respected developers and homebuilders.

“Disney Imagineers are exploring the richness of each local region to inspire the theme of Storyliving by Disney communities,” said Michael Hundgen, executive producer, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Distinctively designed indoor and outdoor spaces will offer residents new opportunities to explore, engage and create the next incredible chapter of their story.”

Announcing Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community

Where better to plant the first stake in the ground for a Storyliving by Disney community than an area that once felt the footsteps of Walt Disney himself. Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community, will be built in the heart of the Greater Palm Springs area. The brilliant mountain-ringed valley was once a rejuvenating retreat for Walt and Lillian Disney. Architecture and amenities of this Storyliving by Disney community will reflect the history and present-day inspiration of the rich valley culture.

Cotino is being developed in collaboration with DMB Development, which is highly regarded for its development of large-scale planned communities in the U.S. According to Brent Herrington, the company’s CEO, “Cotino represents the creativity and operational excellence of Disney combined with the extensive community development expertise of DMB Development. We are delighted to collaborate with Disney in this groundbreaking new concept.”

Disney

Cotino will welcome homeowners of all ages and will include at least one section expressly for 55+ residents. Home buyers will have a range of home types to choose from, including estates, single family homes and condominiums.

Per the Specific Plan approval for the development, the community is expected to surround an approximately 24-acre grand oasis featuring clear turquoise waters with Crystal Lagoons® technology, enabling crystalline lagoons of any size to be built sustainably, with low water consumption and using a minimum amount of additives and energy. A voluntary club membership will offer access to a waterfront clubhouse, a club-only beach area and recreational water activities, as well as Disney programming, entertainment and activities throughout the year.

Cotino also has Specific Plan approval for a vibrant mixed-use district featuring a range of shopping, dining and entertainment, a beachfront hotel, and a professionally managed beach park with recreational water activities that can be accessed by the public through the purchase of a day pass.

Disney+ Debuts First Trailer for “Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers”

Disney

Disney+ has released the first trailer and a new poster for the original movie “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.” A comeback 30 years in the making, the hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles. “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” premieres May 20, 2022, exclusively on Disney+.

“Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” stars John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) as Chip, Andy Samberg (“Palm Springs”) as Dale and KiKi Layne (“If Beale Street Could Talk”). Also joining the cast are Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”), Eric Bana (“Dirty John”), Flula Borg (“Pitch Perfect 2”), Dennis Haysbert (“24”), Keegan-Michael Key (“Schmigadoon!”), Tress MacNeille (“The Simpsons”), Tim Robinson (“I Think You Should Leave”), Seth Rogen (“Pam and Tommy”), J.K. Simmons (“Being the Ricardos”), Chris Parnell (“Saturday Night Live”).

The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer (“Saturday Night Live”), written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and is produced by Todd Lieberman (“Wonder”) and David Hoberman (“Beauty and the Beast”), with Alexander Young (“Extinction”) and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.

In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman.

Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.

The RAMS are going to Disneyland to Celebrate!

Rams

When the final whistle blew to seal the Los Angeles Rams’ remarkable Super Bowl LVI victory Sunday night, the jubilant MVP Cooper Kupp, Aaron Donald and Matthew Stafford turned to the TV cameras and, with the help of their families, shouted those famous words that every NFL player dreams of saying – “We’re all going to Disneyland!’’

That line is the centerpiece of Disney’s famous Super Bowl commercial, which annually features star players from the game in a nationally televised TV spot currently airing on social media sites and major TV networks nationwide. This is the first time three Super Bowl players have appeared in the commercial.

Rams
Continuing a long-running Super Bowl tradition, Aaron Donald appeared in DisneyÕs iconic ÔIÕm Going to Disneyland!Õ commercial Sunday, airing nationwide after the Los Angeles RamsÕ Super Bowl victory in Los Angeles. Following his dazzling Super Bowl performance, Donald plans to celebrate the championship with a fun-filled day at Disneyland Resort on Monday. (Los Angeles Rams)

This year’s “what’s next” commercial also features several Make-A-Wish® kids who made a wish to attend the game and cheer on the Rams, including Kupp, Donald and Stafford. Since 1980, Disney and Make-A-Wish have granted more than 145,000 life-changing wishes globally for kids with critical illnesses.

RamsThe iconic commercial is just the beginning for the three players, who are making the short trip from Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Ca., to Anaheim where they will continue the Rams’ Super Bowl celebration with a fun-filled day at the Disneyland Resort. Kupp, Donald and Stafford are expected to experience some of the theme parks’ exciting attractions, interact with beloved Disney characters and generally have the most magical time of their lives.

Guests at Disneyland Park may see the celebratory cavalcade down Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland Park featuring the three players at 1:30 p.m. PT. Fans may also look for a livestream of the cavalcade LIVE on @DisneyParks TikTok and @DisneyParks Instagram at 1:30 p.m. PT.

It will be a fitting celebration after Kupp, Donald and Stafford stepped into Hollywood’s biggest spotlight – at least for one spectacular night – in leading the Rams to a 23-20 Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. They dazzled the capacity crowd at SoFi Stadium and millions of TV viewers worldwide with their performances.

Leading the Rams to victory, Kupp scored on a one-yard touchdown pass from Stafford with 1:25 left in the game to cap a dramatic scoring drive, finishing with eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Donald had four tackles and two sacks, including a sack of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow on fourth-and-one in the last minute that sealed the victory. Stafford threw for three touchdowns and completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards.

Kupp, Donald and Stafford join some of the most revered names in the NFL who have appeared in Disney’s popular Super Bowl commercial, a tradition that has become woven into the fabric of the game since 1987 when New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms first appeared in the commercial following his team’s Super Bowl victory. Donald is only the third defensive player from a Super Bowl game to be in the commercial.
