Stop me if you have heard this one…A Rabbi, a Priest and a Buddhist walk into a bar. You’ve heard it? Okay how about this one…A drug dealer, a stripper, a runaway and a virgin jump into an RV. Oh you haven’t heard this one? Well then, sit back and get ready to laugh your a** off.
David Clark is a local drug dealer that has just been dealt a bad hand in his profession and needs to make a quick buck or his boss is going to have him, well you know how the drug world works. However his boss, who also happens to be his old college buddy, has a way to make things up. Drive down to Mexico and pick up a shipment for him and deliver it asap. But how does he get all the drugs from Mexico to the US and not be caught, hmmm. Light bulb moment, get a pretend family, get an RV and pretend you’re on vacation. Then again he doesn’t have a girlfriend or kids, but he does know a young man who thinks he’s the best, a neighbor who’s a stripper, and a runaway that kind of put him in this situation. When all is said and done David may learn an important lesson in life and what it truly means to live.
Keeping up with his success with out of the ordinary and over the top comedies Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) has taken the story penned by the writing duo that brought us ‘Wedding Crashers’, Bob Fisher and Steve Faber and spun a hilarious comedy that would make anyone a fan of the National Lampoon Vacation series proud. This is a witty film filled with such sight and well detailed story that you are laughing the entire film. From the opening to the end credits you cannot turn away or laugh to hard or you will miss something. I even have to go see this film again as I was in stitches.
This film is jovial at its best with a great cast of actors that fit their parts to a tee. Lead by David Clark, uh Miller, played by Jason Sudeikis (Hall Pass, Horrible Bosses) who leads this rag tag family with Jennifer Aniston (Friends, Office Space) as his wife Rose, Will Poulter (Son of Rambow, Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Trader) portrays his son Kenny, and rounding out the family is his “daughter” Casey, played by Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew, Wildchild). These four have come together and bring to the screen the perfect example of today’s dysfunctional family with all its ups and downs. From Sudeikis’ complete breakdown, Poulter’s innocent demeanor, Roberts edgy teen angst to Aniston showing she has a lot still going for her at 40+, you will be wanting more at the end. And in regards to Aniston’s, uh strip scenes, believe me everyone was looking and there was no body double there. These four anchor his film and keep it driving throughout. With an excellent supporting cast to boot, you will be looking at this film as a sleeper hit comedy of the summer.
There really is not much that I can say about this film that would or could be negative. With its sound directing, outstanding talent, solid written story, it is hard pressed to not want to see this movie a couple times this summer. If anything, I would have liked to have seen more interactions in the story from the Mexican drug lord played hysterically by Tomer Sisley. With that said and with a lot of discretion, this is not a family film, unless everyone in your family is at least 16-18, then you might make this a family outing. If not, get your friends together and be prepared to snort from all the laughing you will be doing through this film.
Thinking about this film and how comical it is, there is a little moral to be learned, never look a gift horse in the mouth. David was so focused on trying to get his money, pay off everyone and get on with his life, that he couldn’t see what was right there in front of him. However throughout every trial and tribulation that is thrown his way, David learns that those who he takes for granted make his life a little easier and more importantly, meaningful. The family he created is better than the family he may have. Many of us have had similar situations, we do not feel comfortable with those who raised us or are our blood kin but are comfortable and close with those who we choose to be with on a regular basis, our chosen family. It is how many are able to get the one thing we all as humans crave, love. With this in mind, remember that we all have the ability to make our lives both meaningful and full. Keep your eyes open as you never know where you’ll meet your “family” member that helps make your life complete.
