The whimsical spirit of the holidays transforms Universal Studios Hollywood into a winter wonderland bringing merriment and cheer to families and friends this festive season as the theme park ushers in seasonal favorites, “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and “Grinchmas,” beginning Thursday, November 28 and running daily through Sunday, December 29, 2019.
An annual family tradition, “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” adds holiday warmth and cheer to this beloved land as the quaint town of Hogsmeade village is enchanted with seasonal décor uniquely themed to each of the individual storefronts and a dazzling light projection spectacular brings the iconic Hogwarts™ castle to life.

As night falls on Hogsmeade village, “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle” illuminates Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with colorful imagery and impressive dimensional animations that dance across Hogwarts castle in tandem to a musical arrangement from the Harry Potter movies.
Musical performances from the a cappella Frog Choir, comprised of Hogwarts students and their giant throaty frogs, entertain guests with their harmonized holiday-themed songs and fill the land with holiday cheer.
In time for the holiday season, a wide selection of custom-made Christmas ornaments created especially for “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” will be available. Collectibles include a decorative Hogwarts castle snow globe, Hogwarts crest and mascot ornaments representing each of the four houses, wizard card ornaments, unique tree topper, and house pennant garland.
Holiday-themed fare and hot Butterbeer further complement the overall experience.
Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood
An all-new state-of-the-art, topsy-turvy “Grinchmas” tree, twisting and turning over 55 feet in height and adorned with hundreds of ornaments and thousands of white and multi-colored LED lights choreographed to music, brightens the merry “Grinchmas” Who-lebration. Dazzling “Grinchmas” tree lighting ceremonies that take place every evening, accompanied by a snowfall flurry, bring this annual favorite to life, creating a festival of fun fit for The Grinch, his faithful dog Max and a roster of Who-ville Whos.
Spirited holiday décor and festive whimsy will also permeate throughout the theme park, bringing a crew of very merry and mischievous Minions to “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land” to gleefully spread Christmas cheer to visitors of all ages.
Universal CityWalk’s spectacular 40-foot tall Christmas tree will once again glisten with 200,000 LED icicles choreographed to the lights and sounds of the season as the magic of the holidays comes to life in the “5 Towers” outdoor plaza along with a slate of free concert performances and an eclectic ensemble of talented street performers.
CityWalk’s iconic, dancing water fountain with over 230 individual power jets will continue to mesmerize guests when it projects streams of choreographed water into the air complemented by red and green LED lights and an array of holiday-themed music.
The holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood is included in the price of theme park admission.

The Dow Villa Hotel offers vintage western charm and easy access to California’s Eastern Sierra Mountains (photo by Greg Aragon)
The 1930s was a great time for Hollywood westerns and for the city of Lone Pine, California. Film crews came looking for adventure in the nearby Alabama Hills, where giant granite boulders provided the perfect backdrop for hideouts, ambushes, stagecoach rides, and gunfights. These movies brought big names like John Wayne, Gene Autry, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Roy Rogers, Robert Mitchum, and Clayton Moore to name a few.
When daily film shoots ended, many stars and crew members headed back down to Lone Pine and stayed at the new Dow Hotel, which was built by local resident Walter Dow to accommodate the Hollywood influx. The hotel originally had 55 rooms and a large porch with incredible views of the Eastern Sierra Mountains and Mt. Whitney. In the 1950s the hotel expanded with the addition of The Dow Villa Motel.

I discovered Lone Pine and The Dow Villa (www.dowvillamotel.com) on the way home from a recent trip to June Lake, near Mammoth. I heard a lot of good things about the area, but I didn’t expect to find such a quaint small-town feel and old American West charm.
My getaway began when my friends and I checked into room number 105 at the Dow Villa Hotel. Also known as the Roy Rogers suite, the accommodation is a classic 1920s country. It features two rooms connected by a Jack and Jill bathroom. The bedroom has a comfy queen bed, large TV, office desk, closet, window overlooking the hotel patio and water fountain, and a private entrance. The living room boasts a sleeper sofa, big windows looking to the courtyard, large TV, closet, coffee table and chairs, and a hat/coat rack.

The suite also comes with a full-size kitchen with table and chairs, sink, refrigerator, stove and clock with a lasso wrapped around it. The bathroom has a shower/tub combination. The suite is accentuated by lots of fun, old pictures of Roy Rogers and some of the movies shot in the area.

Once checked in, we explored the town. With a population of about 2,000, Lone Pine is located along U.S. Highway 395 in the heart of the Owens Valley. When the 395 gets to Lone Pine it narrows and becomes Main Street. The thoroughfare is lined with western-style buildings, sporting goods stores, an old fashioned local market, an old wooden saloon, a store selling rocks and gems, and a few restaurants.
The restaurants are hearty and popular with hikers, outdoor people, and fishermen who pass through town on their way to nature areas such as Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra, including the Golden Trout Wilderness and 14,505-ft Mt Whitney. The latter, the highest point in the contiguous United States, is about 13 miles west of town and is accessed via Whitney Portal Rd.
The Alabama Hills have been seen in hundreds of classic westerns and other movies (photo by Greg Aragon)
Whitney Portal Rd climbs nearly 5,000 feet from Lone Pine as it zigzags its way up the face of the Eastern Sierra before reaching 8,300 ft Whitney Portal, the gateway for hikers bound for the summit.
We weren’t up to summiting Mt Whitney, so we explored the Alabama Hills, where hundreds of western, science fiction, thriller, and other movies have been filmed. Located about two miles up Whitney Portal Rd, the hills are full of massive rounded boulders, resembling something from the surface of Mars. The rocks are great for climbing on, biking and horseback riding around, and exploring by car. There are also countless spots in the hills to park and set up camp for the day.
One of the most famous spots in the 30,000-acre protected area is the Mobius Arch, a huge arch that majestically frames Mt. Whitney, making it a perfect photo spot. It is easy to see why so many movies were filmed here.
The Museum of Western Film History boasts hundreds of incredible movie artifacts (photo by Greg Aragon)
From the Alabama Hills, we visited the Museum of Western Film History (www.museumofwesternfilmhistory.org). Here, at the base of the hills, we browsed hundreds of incredible movie artifacts and exhibits from the earliest days of silent movies to some of the latest releases. Exhibits include displays on John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Randolph Scott, Gene Autry, and The Lone Ranger. Other showcased movies include “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Iron Man,” “Django,” and “High Sierra,” all of which were filmed in the Alabama Hills.

In 2013, the world was taken by storm with Walt Disney Animation Studios’ fairy tale musical based on the classic Nordic story by Hans Christian Andersen. Frozen has been one of the most profitable animated features in Disney history, holding the position of highest-grossing animated film for nearly 3 years (it was surpassed by Finding Dory in Summer 2016). The Frozen craze took over all parts of Disney: the amusement parks in Anaheim and Orlando were rethemed to celebrate the film for nearly two years, the Norway Pavillion in EPCOT had their attraction redesigned for the film. Before 2017’s Pixar film, Coco, there was an animated short that served as a sequel to the film called Frozen Forever After that had Elsa create mini ice monsters with her sneezes. There is even a Broadway musical based on the movie! For a couple of years, it felt like Frozen was here to stay and I was not on board with the change.
I was not a fan of Frozen when it came out in 2013. I found the movie to be mediocre, and I did not understand its popularity (I always found Tangled to be a much more enjoyable film). Walking into the theater for its sequel, I made sure to put my previous judgment aside and to enter with an open mind. My only thought was this: please be good. It is with great pleasure that I write a review praising this exceptional film! In every way that I did not connect with the first Frozen film, I bonded with this sequel. Without further ado, here is my honest, spoiler-free review of Frozen 2.
Disclaimer: This is not an opinion-free review. While this review does not contain spoilers for the overall film, I allude to particular scenes and plot points in my overall evaluation of the film. Continue at your own risk.
Story
One thing that you may have heard since the first trailer for Frozen 2 is one word: dark. The shots of Elsa struggling to walk on water over crashing waves by a shoreline, purple fire chasing Olaf, and Anna leaping from one cliff to another. These are just a few of the moments shown that have had fans of the first film raise an eyebrow. But this is a good thing!
The story continues a few months after Elsa has lifted the curse of the Eternal Winter in Arendelle. Set in the Autumn season, the story reflects the one word that describes the season: change. In many ways, the story pivots from a focus of sisterly love to a story of generational change. Don’t get me wrong; Elsa’s and Anna’s relationship is rekindled and the shared trauma they have experienced is at the forefront of this film. Unlike the first film, Frozen 2 is not afraid to challenge its audience to think about more complex topics.
Much of the film is surrounded by the mystery of an Enchanted Forest that our heroes find themselves in. While they discover the truth of where they are and its significance to Arendelle, the plot develops from a sing-song holiday movie to an epic fairy tale. Director/Writer Jennifer Lee has said in multiple interviews that she and the creative team viewed Frozen 2 as Act II of the overall play that is the Frozen franchise. Much like in the works of classical theater, the “Act II” of the Frozen story holds more emotional weight than the first act.
Character
Minor Spoiler: There is one line that Olaf repeats a phrase several times through the movie: “The Enchanted Forest is a place of transformation. I wonder what will happen to us!” This quote from the film perfectly summarizes the character development for each protagonist. This is reflected in each of the character’s “moment” of the film.
Unlike the first film, where the main characters were Elsa & Anna, each character has their turn in the limelight. This is particular true for Kristoff and Sven. Kristoff (voiced by Johnathan Groff) transforms from Mountain Man to a sentimental gentleman who’s a role model to all young boys and young men. Of all the character developments in this film, I was most impressed with Kristoff’s development. It felt natural and genuine, all while not distracting the audience from the narrative of the story.
Visual Effects
The visuals of Frozen 2 are incredible. The fire effects and water effects are eerily realistic, redefining the term “animation”. There is a moment where Elsa falls in a body of water (if you’ve seen the trailers, then you can figure out what scene I’m referring to), and her head is drenched from the splash. The visuals of her freckles shimmering in the moonlight, her off-white blonde hair tied back reacts to her movement seamlessly (and physically accurate, unlike her hair in “Let It Go”).
Elsa’s ice powers are beautiful, creating chillingly stunning looks. Olaf’s snow looks fluffy, Sven’s fur looks warm, and Kristoff’s coat looks comfy. The story is greatly affected by the shift from cool colors in Frozen to the warm Autumn colors of Frozen 2. Not only has the color palette transformed for the character outfits, but also for the world around them. Anna has ditched her bright purple winter hat for a darker maroon coat and a burgundy scarf.
If it weren’t for the stunning visuals, the movie would not have left such a positive impact on my view of the movie.
Conclusion/Recommendation
All in all, Frozen 2 is a fantastic follow-up to Part 1 of the story of the sister princesses the world fell in love with six years ago. I would be remiss to not reiterate how impressed I was with this sequel. Frozen 2 broke all the rules of a sequel as it pushed the conversation with complex storytelling, all while maintaining the level of humor and fun from the original. It is to my much-delighted surprise that I write this review with a high level of recommendation for moviegoers to watch this film.

Filmmakers and cast of ‘Frozen 2’ talk about the return of Elsa & Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf for an adventurous sequel that has a darker tone than the original film.
On Saturday, November 9, press gathered in Hollywood, CA at 9:00 a.m. to check-in. Right across from the hotel, the Pantages glimmered with gold morning light. The sun illuminated the sign announcing the future production of Frozen on Broadway coming to the glamourous Hollywood theatre this December. It was the perfect place to discuss the behind-the-scenes and decision-making for Disney’s newest film: Frozen II.
Press Conference held in the W Hotel in Hollywood, CA on November 9, 2019. Source: Thomas Kuhlmeier / TLEV Media
Six years after the original film, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen II continues the story of the princess sisters, the mountain man, and his reindeer, all accompanied by a loveable snowman as they embark on another quest. The music is bigger, the story is more emotionally complex, and the jokes are funnier. All in all, Frozen II is an exceptional sequel (more on that in our review coming out later this week). With such an evolution in the character development from the original film, it left me wondering: what were the creative choices made that led to such a drastic change?

At 10:13 a.m., the creative team behind Frozen II joined the spectacular voice actors for a panel discussion on what returning to these characters meant to each of them. “It’s never ended between Frozen 2 and Frozen 1 for me,” said Idina Menzel (‘Elsa’), “I still sing ‘Let It Go’ with the same level of passion.” This prompted Kristen Anderson-Lopez, half of the EGOT-winning songwriting duo that worked “Let It Go” (the breakout power ballad of the first Frozen film) to say “There would be no ‘Let It Go’…without Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck in the Writers Room…it was created in the idea of a complicated, layered sisterhood.” Writer/Director Jennifer Lee and Director Chris Buck drew heavy influence on the story of Frozen from the Nordic legend of “The Ice Queen” written by Hans Christien Andersen. In that legend, the Ice Queen is a villain with the supernatural powers of ice. It isn’t hard to put two-and-two together that Elsa was originally supposed to be the villain of the story, but Lee and Buck reshaped the story to be about sisterly love rather than a story of monsters and humanity.
The sisterly love between Elsa and Anna didn’t stop at the characters. In fact, actors Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel felt an immediate connection. Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, reminisced about “proposing” to Idina Menzel at the red carpet premiere. “This girl is the most talented person ever,” Gad said, “I told myself ‘either I’m going to marry or be part of an animated franchise with her.'”
But even the actors admitted that the first Frozen film was not flawless. One of the biggest criticism from fans was the lack of singing opportunities for Johnathan Groff, a Broadway performing star whose biopic includes Spring Awakeningand Hamilton. Kristen Bell, the voice of Anna, had this to say: “That was my one criticism of the first one. I was like, look, it’s an excellent film. But Jonathan Groff doesn’t sing, so that’s how it fails. This time, everybody knew what to do. And Jonathan has, dare I say, I mean it’s very difficult to describe and I don’t want to blow it, but it is one of the best — it’s one of the top three moments of the film.” Josh Gad further added, “I think it’s the funniest song in Disney Animation history.”

I won’t give much away, out of respect for those who have not had the opportunity to listen to it (which should be accompanied by the movie visuals for the full effect), but Groff’s character, Kristoff, shines in a way vastly different than from the original film. All that I will say is that the intention of this moment was to serve as a model for young boys and young men alike to see that it is okay to express feelings. “You feel what you feel,” said Groff, “and I want kids to feel like they can express themselves.”
The panel then opened up for questions from the press/media audience to discuss the film. During the Q & A portion of the press conference, a concerned mother asked the panel if the movie was appropriate for children to see due to its darker tone from the original film. The cast shared with the mother that while some scenes may be a bit intense for some audiences, there is no better place to experience such emotions than at the movies.*
“I think it was important to us to remind people of the scope and scale of the first movie that they perhaps had forgotten,” producer Peter Del Vecho informed the audience, “The first movie had a lot of action, had a lot of emotion and drama. And I thought it was important — I think we all thought it was important — to very quickly reestablish that to the method that this was a movie for everyone.”
CCO/Director/Writer Jennifer Lee echoed Del Vecho’s sentiment. “Sometimes we forget, if you go back to old, traditional fairy tales, like Pinnochio and Bambi, they always have a moment that gets a little scary. And that’s part of what fairy tales are for. There’s so that you as a child and as a person in your life can experience things and you’re safely in the seat. And that helps you cope with life. And I think those are really important, and kids reach out. So I think we didn’t go into the characters being full of fear and violence in that way. We went to those things we knew that are provocative and mythic and fairy tale.”
Kristen Bell further reiterated what Lee and Del Vecho’s stance on the tonal shift. While Frozen II is darker than the original, parents and society don’t give children “enough credit to be able to understand what we believe to be ‘darker’ themes and emotions” expressed in stories. Bell addressed the audience member empathetically, saying “I have two little girls too, and I know exactly the feeling that you’re talking about. And the more I thought about it, and then having shown it to them a few weeks ago, I really think that we’re always asked, ‘Why do you think the first one hit?’ I think my conclusion is, we don’t give kids enough credit — because they’re projections of us and we want them to be happy because we want ourselves to be happy all the time. We don’t give them enough credit for their ability to digest complex situations and trauma and struggle.” Bell alluded to temper tantrums in toddlers as an example of children testing their newfound emotions.

Then almost in a parallel of her character in the film, Kristen Bell addressed looked at Idina Menzel when saying, “And I think in this second one, that’s the power of story. You don’t have to tell them that the world is a scary place even though it really is. But you can let them see a story that has a resolution…I actually think that it’s great for kids to be a little bit on the edge of their seat because it’s a safe environment to try on those emotions.”
At that very moment, Kristen Bell finished speaking, and the moderator announced that time had run out for the panel. The cast then posed for pictures, sang one of the songs from the new film soundtrack (a bit off-key, but nobody seemed to care), and then proceeded to exit while the press was dismissed.
The sentiments of the actors and the filmmakers are expressing is one of love and passion for their craft. While the trailers for the next chapter of Anna & Elsa show a more troubling adventure than the first one, the movie is fun for the full family. I can say with confidence that if you liked the first Frozen film, you are going to love its sequel!
Frozen II hits theaters nationwide on Friday, November 22nd. Will you enter the Enchanted Forest for part two of the Arendelle tale?
Independence and the Winnedumah Hotel offer an authentic, historic old California experience (photo by Greg Aragon)
While recently charting my course to California’s Eastern Sierra, I spotted a tiny town on the map called Independence. It was located off Highway 395, right along my path. And with a name like Independence, it screamed history and small-town California. I had to investigate.
My getaway began at the historic 1927 Winnedumah Hotel, where a couple of friends and I met Cindy and Derek Abrahams, the property’s general managers. They told me about the fascinating history surrounding the Winnedumah and set me up in the Bing Crosby suite. That’s right, I stayed in the same room that the legendary actor/crooner stayed in while he was in town filming or sneaking away from Hollywood.

Vintage and charming, the Crosby suite features two rooms that share a Jack and Jill bathroom. The suite has a 1920s décor, with classic hardwood floors and furniture, metal-framed beds and period-era bathroom fixtures.

There are no televisions in the hotel rooms, but the serenity of the property, with its gentle creaking wood floors and crackling fireplace in the lobby, inspire relaxation, book reading, or conversation with friends, fellow visitors from around the world, or with Cindy and Derek, who are knowledgeable about the area and treat guests like family.

“When people visit Independence and the Winnedumah Hotel, they are going to get an authentic, historic Eastern Sierra Nevada experience,” says Cindy. “This is the old west and we’ve got the mountains, the high desert, and quintessential small-town USA. And when you stay here, you get a very personal, boutique hotel experience.”

Independence is located off U.S. Route 395, the main north-south highway cutting through the Owens Valley. The tiny town is a gateway to outdoor havens such as the John Muir Wilderness Area and Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks. Hikers pass through while trekking the Pacific Crest Trail, or on their way up California’s two tallest peaks, Mt. Whitney and Mt. Williamson. Others stay at the Winnedumah Hotel for quieter experience while skiing in busy Mammoth. Whatever the reason, the hotel gets about 60 percent of its clientele from international travelers.

But many of the Winnedumah’s first visitors were local, coming from Hollywood. Numerous early westerns were filmed in nearby Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills. This brought the likes of Roy Rogers, Gary Cooper, Gabby Hayes, John Wayne and Bing Crosby to the newly built Winnedumah Hotel. Wayne had a favorite room at the hotel and when Crosby visited, he was given the room above the managers’ suite so they could hear him sing in the shower. Even famed California photographer Ansel Adams sought comfort at the property while on photo shoots.

The hotel lobby still has the original 1892 piano that Bing used to sit at and sing as well as other furnishings from the 1920s, including the overstuffed chairs in the lobby and the steel mesh chairs on the front porch which can be seen in Roy Roger’s first movie “Under Western Stars.”
Besides the Winnedumah, the town also boasts a tiny post office, one restaurant, a sandwich shop, and a taco truck. For culture, there is the Eastern California Museum, located a couple blocks from the hotel. After a complimentary buffet breakfast at the hotel, we walked to the museum and discovered an incredible collection of beautiful, hand-crafted Native American baskets.

The display is one of the largest exhibits of local Paiute-Shoshone basketry in the nation. Ornamental and functional baskets, along with cradleboards, projectile points, bows and arrows, and rare examples of Paiute beadwork are included in the extensive exhibit. The basket exhibit includes more than 400 pieces and nearly 100 other, related artifacts, and is contained in about 14 large display cases.
The museum also showcases a large collection of historic photographs, Owens Valley history, scores of old west guns, and extensive mining and farming equipment and historic structures found outside in the museum yard. There is also lovely creek and pond outside, with majestic views of the Eastern Sierra mountains in the background.

Directly across from the Winnedumah Hotel is the iconic Independence Courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1969 the courthouse held 24 members of the Manson Family for possession of stolen vehicles and property.

About three miles northwest of Independence is the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery. Built-in 1916, it has supplied trout eggs to other hatcheries in California and other western states. It is the only hatchery to produce golden trout, California’s state fish.

Have you heard? There’s a rumor in Costa Mesa… Anastasia has swept into Segerstrom Center for the Arts to dance into your heart in a completely reimagined way!
Set in the early 1920s, the musical immediately differs from its animated counterpart by being more historically accurate. It begins with a flashback of the night in 1917 when Bolsheviks stormed the palace and killed the entire Romanov family. Scene cut to a day in the life in Soviet Leningrad (formerly St. Petersburg) where life for the general populace has been bleak since the fall of the Russian Empire. Rumors are spinning that it’s possible that one of the Romanov children, Anastasia, somehow survived the palace raid and escaped. The Dowager Empress is offering a reward to anyone who can find Anastasia for her, and no one is more excited than local conmen Dmitri and Vlad. They hatch a plan to audition women to play the role of Anastasia, but just when they were about to give up amongst the droves of terrible actresses, a woman walks in who will change their lives forever—could Anya actually be Anastasia?
Lila Coogan (Anya) has an amazing voice. She did an amazing job portraying the innocent naivety of Anya. Jake Levy (Dmitri) was charming in his role Dmitri is arguably not all that likable of a character, but he served him well. The standout performances for me were Edward Staudenmayer (Vlad) and Tari Kelly (Countess Lily). Their comedy and athleticism in the number “The Countess and the Common Man” had me screaming in laughter! Stayed Mayer was warm and lovable in the role of Vlad. As a fan of the movie, I was grateful for that. I had difficulty understanding much of Jason Michael Evans’ (Gleb) singing which was problematic because of his important role.
The set design was extremely simple but compelling: consisting of a practical set of walls, but relying heavily on projections. The projections served the story well. The one exception was a remarkable train car set that allowed for fantastic visual storytelling in a few numbers.
If you are a huge fan of the 1997 animated film, as I am, you will likely enjoy this musical. If you have never seen the animated film, you will absolutely love it! I found it interesting that the antagonist in the animated film (Rasputin) was replaced with a more historically accurate Soviet officer (Gleb). His role of being torn by whether he is desperately in love, or consumed with hatred fell a little flat to me in this performance. I wanted to feel more but just didn’t. Overall this was a great performance, but when it comes to comparing this story to its animated inspiration, I think I would rather take a Journey to the Past.
