The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Rises from the Depths

The Ringmaster and The Captain overlooking the crowd

Darkness has once again descended upon the legendary Queen Mary in Long Beach for Dark Harbor, Southern California’s most terrifyingly authentic haunt, with six mazes, private patios, and FOUR new captivating secret bars masked in menacing darkness, waiting to be uncovered. Those daring enough will have the opportunity to venture through Dark Harbor in hopes of stumbling upon the demented delights brewing within The SideBar, Door 13, The Line Up, and The Broken Compass. Guests are encouraged to push their curiosity, mingle with monsters, and test their fears in hopes of discovering the strongest spirits at Dark Harbor to sip on the to-die-for new specialty cocktails that only lurk within.

All your favorite spirits from the paranormal steamship make their appearances in seven “lands” composed of Shipyard, Galley, Port, Bayou, Nursery, Midway, and Midship.  The most important thing you need to know is that there are six scare mazes in the fairgrounds and onboard the Queen Mary herself.  The provided guide-map can be a little tricky to navigate, but we’ll try to be your compass through the confusion. Best to prepare yourself for the high seas so you don’t miss out.

In addition to the new secret bars and specialty cocktails, Dark Harbor hosts additional bars including Crime Scene Alley and Hideaway, The Last Drop, The Barrel Tasting Room, Rusty Nail & Pier and 9-degrees Ice Cave, which will also provide guests with delectable drinks to quench their deadly thirst. For those with more than just a hunger for horror, cabana menus offer tantalizing table service platters with a variety of enticing entrée options. Head to the Mess Hall at Deadrise for a loaded macaroni and cheese cup or work up an appetite for Poison Pizza at Feast. Guests can take a break from the tricks with treats like crepes, iScream malts and shakes, cotton candy martinis, and liquid nitrogen infused kettle corn that will chill guests to the core.

Learn more how to access the secret bars in the description at the END of the guide-map; where most people would not bother reading.  This makes the hunt even more gratifying!  Read carefully as a clue may be hiding in plain sight.  There are four secret bars altogether.  We were able to find two of them.  Continue to read which of the scare mazes have something to hide.

Performances throughout the evening occur on two main stages designed to be viewed from virtually any angle.  The Aerial Ring features death-defying acts.  Also in the Bayou is The Pyre stage with fiery acts twice nightly.  There’s also the smaller Sideshow stage in the Midway with close-up variety acts.  Vaudeville-type shows range from arial stunts, fire play, comedy, song, and hula loop dances.  Each act is only a few minutes in length, so you can grab a quick bite to eat and enjoy the shows.  Sliders also make the area their home with grandeur scheduled showtimes.  This group has more recently displayed the best of their skills here compared to competitors.  A 4-D Theater inside the ship and a ride on the swing from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch are extra cost attractions that have been around for years.

We followed a conga line of people that got lost in this part of the ship and walked a very long way before finding no exit and had to walk back.  This lack of safety was quickly corrected with a monster in this area to direct guests to the correct pathway as well to the bridge overlooking the massive boiler room.  There used to be a sparkler here a few years ago that gave a sense of scope as the illuminating sparks drifted to the floor.

And end of the maze featured what appeared to be victims of Samuel the Savage with their intestines hanging past your face.  This is one of the few mazes that has a catchy musical soundtrack.  A welcome break from the dull silence in the majority of the mazes at Dark Harbor.  The previous theme here had guests traverse through the murderous mind of Samuel the Savage.  It’s a fresh look into the same character but from a different perspective.

The story would have benefitted more if there were signs saying “Opening tomorrow night!” or Bearded Lady informing us to come back tomorrow for opening night.  We’re not open yet” to help strengthen the backstory the creators came up with.

The idea of guests sneaking into a closed circus the night before opening is fun. The path to the secret bar would be more visually interesting if the bookcase was in the maze as the entrance to the hidden room.  It doesn’t make much sense to have a hidden doorway to exit the secret room once you’re already inside of it.

DEADRISE

A sunken ship rises from the ocean floor.  It’s doomed crew chases you the down the course of the deck.  Flee from their clutches and explosions of fire and water.  A labyrinth of hatches, barrels, and cages slow you down.  But for how long?

Several buttons activate an explosion of air and water.  Carefully timed, this could be great fun.  However, a particular group went too far with the mechanism.  They lured unsuspecting guests to look INSIDE the barrel with the water cannon.  Because of the level the barrel was positioned, this causes great alarm for the safety of the guests inside the maze.  The water cannon should have been positioned on top of another barrel so as not to be a potential danger to someone’s face under high water pressure.

This maze also has a history of having trip hazards in its path.  Dragging camouflage netting and slippery floors are potential safety concerns.  Since the maze’s debut, it has been a crowd favorite for its unique design and winding layout.  But it never seems to get any noticeable upgrades in its logistics. Dark Harbor always appear to take a safe and proven route with little courage to proceed forward.

OVERVIEW

Offering the chance for repeat guests to unlock secret rooms definitely makes the experience different from previous years and makes itself stand out from other competing haunts.  It’s a scavenger hunt for adults which relies on puzzle solving without the “escape room” angle. The hunt is fun, but the reward may leave some slightly disappointed.  Thankfully the secret bar in Deadrise offers the chance to press a button to create their own scares at unsuspecting guests.  It’s a great concept.  Just needs more scare triggers, special photo ops (a chance to share on social media).  One downfall is the lack of communication how the concept works.  It is understandable to keep this a “secret” and want to lure people back.  Not sure how they ideally they want to attract people to this.

The mazes are more or less the same from previous years.  The creators boast how Knott’s Scary Farm maze designer Jon Cooke joined the Dark Harbor 2018 team and the “choose your own adventure” strategy.  It’s a hit and miss to some degree.  The crawl element in “Feast” is gripping.  Sinister Pointe accomplished something similar years ago.  It’s a sight for sore eyes this feature is brought back in some shape or form even in another maze.  The crawl element in “B340” should have been reversed.  Guests should have been guided to crawl under the bed instead of coming out of the bed on the other end.  The hidden ball pit and slide from “Circus” is missed from its days inside the dome next door.  We tried to go back and try the roped course in “Deadrise”, but we were directed to the challenge-less route.  The element of finding your way through the “scare zone” areas of this maze would be more enhanced as long as a monster splits the congo line of people walking through.

These “choose your own adventure” and “secret bars” can bring people back.  As long as they are aware these are what separates Dark Harbor from competitors upon arrival and in their radar.  Otherwise patrons can easily miss out on the uniqueness of the experiences and may leave disappointed.  This may also entice people to upgrade their tickets with Fast Fright, Evil Express, or VIP.  Which by the way, there is essentially three different types of fast passs, depending how much you are willing to pay; either with money or time.

The endless overpriced cabanas, bungalows, bars, food, parking, and add-on attraction prices may turn guests away after learning their discounted admission tickets was indeed “too good to be true”.  Safety may be questionable as well.  As we rode the Sinister Swing ride, we noticed a guest just wandered past the exit gate to get closer camera shots of her friends during the ride cycle.  There is no locking mechanism at the exit gates and the ride operator has no view of them either.

Overall, come early (with a full stomach) for the mazes and spend some quality time with the characters and shows. Try your hand at finding the secret bar coins for access and hope you find the entrance inside the mazes the first time.  Ticket upgrades will be your best option if you want to discover the secret bars yourself.  Given the very dark nature of the mazes, we recommend you hold on to your loose personal articles.  You wouldn’t want your car keys to get lost anywhere near the Queen Mary.  If you haven’t been to Queen Mary Dark Harbor in a few years, this may be a good year for a return.

Bringing the true infamous tales of The Queen Mary to life, the annual event is now open and continues through November 2, 2018. General admission ticket prices start at just $20 online, with Fast Fright, Evil Express, VIP, Ultimate Scream, and lodging packages available. For more information or to purchase tickets online, visit www.queenmary.com/dark-harbor.

Halloween Magic with DIY Main Street Mickey Pumpkin

There is nothing quite like Halloween time at the Park. You can bring a bit of the spooky magic to your home—with a DIY Main Street Mickey Pumpkin straight out of Disneyland Resort. This will make a great table display.

What You’ll Need

  • Large pumpkin
  • Orange, yellow, white, green, and brown acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • 2 styrofoam balls
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Molding paste
  • Hot glue
  • Air-dry clay
  • Awl
  • Tacky glue
  • Moss mat
  • Styrofoam base
  • Foam core
  • Gray foam sheet
  • Small pumpkins
  • Floral twine
  • Small fake flowers
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Small beads
  • Thin black chain

How To Make It

  1. Paint the large pumpkin a brighter orange color, adding a green stem and details with a red-brown color. Let it dry. With a light orange/yellow color, paint Mickey’s face on the large pumpkin, and let it dry.
  2. Shape 2 styrofoam balls to look like pumpkins, using a knife (or sculpting/carving tool). These will be Mickey’s ears. With scissors, cut into the bottom so they will sit flush with Mickey’s head. Add molding paste all over the styrofoam to smooth out the texture, and allow them to dry. Paint both to match the Mickey pumpkin (minus the facial features), and let them dry.
  3. Then add the ears by hot gluing the styrofoam pumpkins to Mickey. Let them dry.
  4. Make a pumpkin leaf (creating veins with an awl tool), curly vine, and 2 small stems out of air-dry clay. Allow them to dry. Paint leaf veins brown, the surface green, and the vine and stems green. Let them all dry. Hot glue the leaf and vine to the top of Mickey’s head and the stems to his pumpkin ears. Let them dry.
  5. Make a base for Mickey and the pumpkins. Cut the moss mat into a circle about 1” smaller than the styrofoam base, as it will become the curb. Use tacky glue to adhere the moss to the styrofoam. Let it dry.
  6. Cut the foam core and gray foam sheet into rings of the same size that will fit right on top of the styrofoam base. This will be the curb. Then hot glue the gray foam sheet onto the foam core ring, and the ring onto the outer edge of the platform. Cut a strip of gray foam sheet for the side of the platform and hot glue it. Let everything dry.
  7. Make the small pumpkin-stack base. Paint the small pumpkins just like you did the large one for Mickey (minus his facial features). Let them dry. Then hot glue them in a circle and build up layers. Mickey will rest in it when finished.
  8. Twist up sections of floral twine to look like pumpkin vines. Paint them green and allow them to dry. Add vines to the pumpkin stack using hot glue. Then add white and yellow flowers around the stack with hot glue. Next, add starburst details to the pumpkin stack using yellow paint. Let them dry.
  9. Make the fence. Paint 11 small bamboo skewers black, and let them dry. Thread a black bead through each, to the middle. Then punch 11 holes (evenly spaced) in your curb using the awl. Insert the skewers. Drape the chain from one skewer to the next. Add a bead at the top of each “fence post” using a dab of tacky glue.
  10. Place Mickey on top of the pumpkin stack, and enjoy your masterpiece!

A bone-chilling walkway that’s looking sharp
El Capitan
Release the Kraken

This maze makes quite an extraordinary use of space compared to the location’s previous tenant. The level of detail in the props and sets have really brought another level to what Knott’s is capable of in that department.  The giant bones, rocking ship, oversized sea creatures, and a low-tide simulation with laser and fog with potential scares really sets this apart from your typical theme park haunt maze.

A beacon of fright

If you adore H.P. Lovecraft or the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, this may be your new favorite.

  • DARK ENTITIES

The other new maze for the season comes in the form of a sci-fi space alien mission gone wrong in “Dark Entities”.  This offering replaces “The Tooth Fairy”.

El Capitan
Robots would never bring harm to human life…

Alarms are blaring and the ventilation system is billowing smoke.  A foreign species attacks your space station with no end in sight.  This thing is in search for a new host and devours the crew.  Will you be able to make an escape back to earth?

El Capitan
Houston, we have a problem

If you love the Alien movie franchise or 1997’s “Event Horizon”, this sci-fi horror themed maze will blow you away.

  • DARK RIDE
El Capitan
Exploring the abandoned Dark Ride

Returning for a second year is the thrilling “Dark Ride”.  Walk in, if you dare, into an abandoned dark ride full of illusions and magic designed to amuse.  What’s more amusing in this amusement park ride is the residents that still reside within the facility itself.  Be careful of the maintenance bay, there are sharp tools and whirling gears in there.

This maze has many twists and turn

El Capitan

El Capitan
The Greatest Show-woman

The set design is full of details with its winding pathway.  Yet another maze that surpasses its predecessor in the same space.  Not much has changed from last year, but It’s still entertaining as always.  The entrance starts with you following the path of a bus bar for a dark ride.  Think of the scene in the first live-action Scooby Doo movie where the gang explores a closed dark ride. The big finale room full of clowns has the path peaking in here before verifying and back, giving you just a taste before exiting.

  • SPECIAL OPS: INFECTED
El Capitan
Obtain your weapon and check your ammo

“Special Ops: Infected” is a welcome return to an interactive scare maze.  Guests are armed with rifles and sent out into a zombie infected city in search of destroying a deadly virus.  Game points are collected with headshots only.

El Capitan
A briefing about the story and your mission

It’s still quite an amazing sight to see practically full size helicopters and damaged cars in the cityscape.  Walking thru a shopping reminds recalls scenes from 1978’s “Dawn of the Dead” and a train full of zombies is like the scene from 1990’s “Predator 2”.

The finale has been repositioned so guests can try and get a better look at its boss battle baddie. What also makes this maze have such a high repeat value is the focus between shooting zombies and the detailed set design. There’s a lot to go back to check out.

  • PARANORMAL INC
El Capitan
Paranormal Inc facade

Investigations continue with “Paranormal Inc” with case #13 – the haunting of Harden Hill.  The queue video still does an excellent job of bringing the audience into the world of the maze and sets them up for their investigation.  The first room still packs an awe-inspiring punch, especially for first timers.  Because as we know, every good theme park attraction starts off when something goes terribly wrong.

El Capitan
What supernatural mysterious shall we uncover?
El Capitan
A “live” procedure of medical torture
El Capitan
Would you dare place your name in the guest book?

First you’re at an abandoned hospital known for torturing its patients.  Then next thing you know, you’re pulled into another world full of darkness.  Will you become the newest patient of this murderous medical staff?  The talent here undergoes many physical feats to deliver the scares.  If you’ve conquered this case before, beware of a brand new ending that may satisfy your curiosities.

  • SHADOW LANDS
El Capitan
Live by the sword, die by the sword

Enter “Shadow Lands” and bring honor to your soul.  Undead demon samurais raise their blades for new victims to slice and dice.  Do not be seduced by the geishas, they have other plans for you behind closed doors.

El Capitan
A geisha sticking her neck out for you

This was quite the winning maze when it first debuted with many Japanese motifs that drape the design.  The images also harkens back to Japanese inspired horror movies like “Ringu” and “The Grudge” with its water wells and long-haired deities.  The bath house scene can be unsettling.  The music delivers a false sense of eerie serenity.

El Capitan
Not quite the geisha experience that was in mind

There is one hallway full of samurai statues against either side of the walls that would benefit from one change.  A scare talent is among the statues, but they can be seen out of place compared to the rows of statues already there.  If one of those upper half-body statues on a pedestal could be replaced if a live person, that would probably be more effective and visually appealing.

El Capitan
A closer look reveals a samurai design

If you’re a repeat visitor, you may have noticed the opening room has been omitted and you are lead straight into an exterior scene.  That first room didn’t quite lend itself to as much of an impact as “Paranormal Inc.”, so this is a welcome change that gets you straight into the setting.  The original layout may have proven too cumbersome for guests to grasp.

  • TRICK OR TREAT
El Capitan
Lights out!

A long stable with Halloween Haunt since the return of the Green Witch has been “Trick or Treat”.  Even with room modifications every year and an upgraded facade, a new element was introduced last year that kept this experience alive.  And people are loving it.  Guests are given a flashlight to navigate through the house.  But just like in the movies, your light flickers on and off.  At times it reveals special messages and designs hidden under a blacklight effect.

  • PUMPKIN EATER
El Capitan

“Pumpkin Eater” returns for a second year located nearest to the park entrance.  Based on the nursery rhyme of which the character Peter kept a wife in a pumpkin shell.

El Capitan
Who’s hungry?
El Capitan
Go ahead and pull up a chair

This maze has a stellar design with its pathway and set aesthetics.  The scarecrow pumpkin head at the front is still animated, speaking to guests as they enter.  But this experience suffers from flat and dim lighting,  especially once you enter inside the pumpkin head.  There is a lot of grotesque walls of decomposition from the pumpkin that must be left to the imagination.  The talent this year has seen an improvement in comparison to its opening season.

The area before entering the pumpkin mouth is slightly different.  But it’s hardly noticeable.  Whether it be intentional or not, the corn maze near the end is an appreciated nod to an old maze, ‘Corn-stalkers”.

Guests enter a large oven as they will be part of the special ingredient for pumpkin pie.  Yum!

THE RED BARN

El Capitan
Another kind of ‘animal farm’
El Capitan
New entrance for fresh meat

Returning for another herd of cannibalism is “The Red Barn”.  The maze features a new entrance which makes much more logical sense.  An auctioneer-type individual is also at the front calling for more victims.

El Capitan
Hold on, dinner is coming

This is perhaps one of the goriest scare maze options you can find in the park.  So if you are easily startled by disembodied limbs and dripping blood, best to stay clear.  For everyone else, it’s a horrific hootenanny!  There’s plenty of pigs and demonic horses for you to ride off into sunrise.

This looks inviting

LIVE SHOWS AND EXPERIENCES

Knott’s Scary Farm offers three main shows and at least three mini-shows throughout the season.  For those with a Halloween Haunt season pass, this will definitely be a benefit as some shows are not the same twice.  In other cases, there are mini-shows to be discovered.

  • THE HANGING
El Capitan
Shhh… It Happens

This annual parody show has always been a hit-or-miss depending on the quality of the writing.  Sadly to say, this is one of those lackluster performances.  The Lawman and the Executioner try to avoid the censorship from taking away the annual tradition hanging the worst offender of the year.  The two are met with pop-culture references, fights, and gags to entertain the “good citizens of Calico”.  There seemed to be a lack of dance choreography given the absence of any other dance show offerings inside the Charles Schulz Theatre.  You’ll find characters going head to head with each other such as Han Solo, Black Panther, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, Elastigirl, Lara Croft, Venom, Deadpool, The Avengers, Ready Player One, and The First Purge.  The set is inspired by “A Quiet Place” with its string lights switching from white to red.  This is probably one of the better references to this year’s show.  As for the person actually being hung for the finale, The Hanging selected two others before making the final choice.  That character’s introduction actually fits well within the context of the show.

  • CONJURERS
El Capitan
Magic and Mirth at the Birdcage Theatre

The show that will most likely win over audiences is surprisingly a magic show.  September features a new magician every weekend.  But one artist will perform throughout October.  On opening weekend, Dana Daniels delivered his brand of mind-reading acts blended with good, clean humor.  The theatre often permits food and drinks inside.  Something to keep in mind if you’re on a tight schedule.  We recommend to be in line +30 minutes before showtime.

A team of improv performances invites audiences to participate in a variety of acts.  Portions include moving the actors bodies to match their dialogue or creating sound effects with their mouths.  The stage is nicely decorated to encompass the spirit of old movie palaces.  Each show will be different, so your mileage will vary.

  • RANDOM ACTS
El Capitan
An upbeat saloon mini-show

The most entertaining of these unscheduled mini-shows is atop of the Calico Saloon.  Dancers come out to upbeat tunes as a gathering audience watches from down below.

The new Forsaken Lake scare zone, located underneath Silver Bullet, debuts with a procession of the undead.  Lighting and crowd control can be difficult in this area.  You’d definitely want to at least go for the music: it’s to “die” for.

El Capitan
Westward Ho

The Calico Medicinal wagon has been perched by the exit store of the new Hangtime roller coaster where you can meet and greet a character for photos.  Something similar has occurred before with the steam locomotive at the train station.

An art show in the Bizarre Bazaar, a zombie VR, and Awaken the Dead, a dance party in the Fiesta Village, completes the live entertainment and experience offerings.

OVERVIEW

Knott’s Scary Farm has really been stepping up their game with the quality showmanship of their maze designs.  Just needs some lighting work with darker areas.  The reduction in live show offerings is noticeable with very little headliners.  Hopefully the unscheduled mini-shows will see growth in the future as they can be quite the little treat.  Overall, a fun season in this year’s lineup.

Knott’s Scary Farm has welcomed millions of visitors over the past 46 years and has become an institution in the Southern California theme park landscape. Knott’s Scary Farm is open 7:00 pm – 1:00am on select Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, and 7:00pm – 2:00 am Fridays and Saturdays.
