Review: ‘Fright Fest’ at Six Flags Magic Mountain Offers some Good Scares

I want to start this entry with a little background. I love being scared. I love the ghoulies, demons, ghosts, Michael, Freddy, Jason… all of it. So much so, that I’m very fortunate that I have a friend who is able to take me to all three of the major Halloween scare based theme park events in Southern California.

For one reason or another, I’d never made it to Fright Fest at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Well, mostly because I can’t tolerate turbulent roller coaster style attractions (that’s mostly due to being over the age of 35). When the opportunity arose to cover the event for Socalthrills, I was excited and really looking forward to it.

While I knew I wouldn’t be experiencing the attractions, I was looking forward to experiencing the frights!

Upon arrival to the park, we were instructed to check-in at the all new Club 6-Feet Under, described as a “lively pop-up party with Deadly DJ spinning hot jams until the wee hours of the night.” The club is located in the heart of the park in the Metro Park Pub. There, we were able to nosh on some of the available menu items for the option Ghoulish Grub at the Pub dining opportunity. We nibbled on corn, ribs, fried chicken and some delightful caramel apples. Spirited beverages are also available for purchase at Club 6-Feet Under. As theme park food goes, it was pretty tasty. Not the best and certainly not the worst. During dinner, the theme park offers, what they call, “monstertainment.” It is exactly what you’d expect it to be .. some of the monsters from the scare zones and mazes are on hand to take photos, dance and encourage merry … err scary making! The DJ was spinning some classic 80’s music and the atmosphere was fun, especially with the monsters showing off their best moves.

At 7 p.m., we were invited to witness the surge. This is when the monsters are released onto the streets of Magic Mountain to make their way to their mazes and scare zones. I like to call it the running of the monsters! This is much more fun than it seems! I’ve witnessed something similar at Dark Harbor and I like to imagine the monsters have as much fun, if not more, than the fans eagerly awaiting their arrival. Once the gates have opened and the monsters have been let loose, the scares really begin. This is the official opening moment of Fright Fest. For the rest of night, screams and darkness are the order of Six Flags Magic Mountain.

With our trusty Fright Fest Express Maze Pass, we were set to experience the scares, screams and horror that was promised. I should mention, two levels of Maze Passes are available. The Haunted Maze Pass and the Express Maze Pass. Think of it as stand-by vs. THE FLASH pass.

The scare zones are top notch. Five zones are spread around the park and are included in the price of admission. If you’re looking for a scare, but, don’t want to splurge on a Haunted Maze Pass, the scare zones are the way to go. My personal favorite is the Damned ‘N Disguise scare zone. It felt more like a lively dance zone than a scare zone. Great upbeat music, lots of monsters and lots and lots of fog!

Any DC fan must make a stop to the Suicide Squad: The Six Flags Fright Fest Experience in the Park’s DC Universe area. Here, some of the “worst heroes ever” reign supreme over the chaos. It also provided one of the most fun photo opportunities I’ve experienced in a theme park in some time. That Harley Quinn is a character!

The mazes, on the other hand, were very much hit or miss. The vast majority featured top-notch sets, lighting and a great atmosphere to really set the tone. Unfortunately, for me, the scares were often expected and not quite as impactful as I had hoped. Red’s Revenge, for example, felt less like a major theme park production and more like a high school PTA fundraiser. On the other end of the spectrum, there was Dead End. Hands down my favorite maze of the night. It was fantastic! I don’t want to give anything away, but, if you’re willing to make the trek to the top of the mountain, you’ll be rewarded in a very illuminated manner.

The theme park offers seven mazes, that are interspersed between the rides. As with any visit to Six Flags Magic Mountain, be prepared to walk. To add to the scares, riders will experience most of the roller coasters in the dark.

So, I suppose this is the point of my review where I decide if I’d return to Six Flags Fright Fest. The answer, for me, is no. Not because I was disappointed (full disclosure, my socks weren’t blown off, but, it was fun). I simply would not return due to the limited offerings for someone like me. Since I can’t enjoy the roller coasters, I wouldn’t be able to justify the cost of admission AND the cost of the Haunted Maze Pass. If you’re a roller coaster person and a haunted attractions person, this may be right up your alley.

Thanks, Six Flags Magic Mountain for allowing us to check an item off of my list of things to do! It was a night full of fear, good friends and fog!

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Movie Review

2015’s Kingsman: The Secret Service was a surprise hit when it opened. A love letter to the James Bond films in many ways, the film found an audience who was hungry for a film that was just balls to the walls fun, funny, and had a tad bit of heart. Director Matthew Vaughn had lightning in a bottle with the first film, down to the script and the cast, so it’s hard to expect a sequel that can match the quality of the first. But with Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Vaughn’s second film in the Kingsman series, we’ve gotten the rare sequel that while not as good as the first, still ends up being a damn fine entry in its own right. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a fast paced, kinetic, and over the top sequel that, while not quite as focused as the first, still finds the energy that made the first special to be a worthy companion to Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Within the film’s opening moments, you know exactly what you’re in for, as Vaughn starts the film with a bang, as he puts the audience right into a car chase through London, as Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is attacked outside Kingsman. From there, the film is off and running at an almost breakneck pace, never really giving the audience a chance to stop and breathe. It’s that breakneck pacing that is a bit of detriment for the film though, as unlike the first, it really doesn’t have enough time to really soak in the story and the characters. The first takes its time to ramp up to the insanity of the third act, but this film puts its foot to the pedal out the gate, creating a whirlwind of chaos for the audience.

Luckily, the film’s plot isn’t hard too hard to follow in any way, as Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) head to America when the Kingsman are destroyed by an outside enemy. All signs point to Poppy (Julianne Moore), an eccentric drug dealer who has an obsession with 1950s Americana and robots. Running low on options, Eggsy and Merlin must team with their American counterparts, the Statesman, to try and track down Poppy. But what the remaining Kingsman duo soon discover changes things completely, when they discover that Harry Hart (Colin Firth) is actually alive in America. With a global pandemic quickly threatening the free world, Eggsy, Merlin, and Harry must band together with the Statesman to stop Poppy before it’s too late.

This is all pretty standard spy fare, and for this film, that’s what it needs to be. Kingsman: The Golden Circle really harkens back to the last few years of Roger Moore’s time as Bond, going for an all out, over the top approach to the material. The film wisely never takes itself too seriously, and really, it’s even cheesier than the first in a lot of ways. For some, they’re going to find that enduring, while others may find that it leans too far on the humor and the over the top action compared to the first. This film is the definition of a sequel going bigger, but at the same time, it’s also never trying to top the first film. While the action in the first is what really left a mark, especially the church scene, this film never tries to recreate or top that scene. Instead, Vaughn goes in a completely different direction with the action scenes. Each action scene is fun, new, and exciting compared to the first, which makes it seem fresh and fun. And there’s a lot of action too, as the sequel goes all out putting a lot more action at the forefront than the first. This will please action fans, but at times it almost feels a bit too much as it takes away from the film’s story and characters.

The truth is, while the action and the humor are great, the reason that Kingsman: The Secret Service worked so well was the characters. Thankfully, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has some great character work for returning stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong. Egerton and Firth in particular get the most emotional heft of the film with the return of Harry, and what it means for Eggsy. The film is at its best when it focuses on their relationship, and the circumstances around Harry’s unexpected return into Eggsy’s life. There’s just a really wonderful bond between Egerton and Firth throughout the film that really makes their scenes that much more poignant, fun, and heartbreaking all at once. It’s a really balancing act, but Vaughn manages it splendidly, really giving these characters the film’s best arc.

The only real bummed is that much of the new cast isn’t given a whole lot to do here. Channing Tatum especially almost feels wasted, which is really too bad because he’s really proven to be one of the most entertaining actors working in Hollywood right now. His character, Tequila, has a few great moments, but is then ushered out of the film almost as quick as he came. Halle Berry as well is good as the Statesman version of Merlin, aptly named Ginger, who is fun, but also really leaves little lasting impression on the film. Jeff Bridges fairs better as Champ, the head of Statesman, because frankly, he’s Jeff Bridges. Whenever he pops up in things, he’s incredibly entertaining, and he’s a joy to watch in this film. But the standout in the new cast is Pedo Pascal, who is really fantastic as Whisky. His character is incredibly badass, while also a quick talker, and he uses a whip in a way that would put Indiana Jones to shame. It’s a real star making performance, and for those not watching Narcos, it’ll definitely put Pascal on their radar. Finally, it must be said that Julianne Moore is deliciously cheesy and wonderful as the villain Poppy, but man, is it almost like she’s in an Austin Powers film. She just hams up the screen left and right, but it’s hard not to totally love the character at the same time. Her character could really divide audiences, but her sweet talking, over the top nature is certainly an ode to some of the more over the top Bond villains, and for that she succeeds.

The biggest problem with Kingman: The Golden Circle really is that it goes so much bigger than the first, that it loses some of the smaller moments that made the first work. It’s not hugely detrimental, however, it would have been nice to see the film scale back a bit to let the narrative and the characters breathe. There was some great moments with Eggsy’s mum in the first film that are pretty much nonexistent here. While they do try to give Eggsy some personal side with his new girlfriend, Princess Tilda (Hanna Alström, returning from the first film), it’s more used for plot than anything else. It would have been nice had Tilda had more to do, making her a more emotionally grounded character that the film lacked. This all really comes down to the fact that the film opens and just goes from broke within the opening minutes, going from zero to three hundred miles per hour in a matter of seconds, before ending at a whomping twelve hundred miles per hour. This film is fast, furious, and fun, but it lacks a little bit of that character work that really grounded the first.

Even with the smaller issues aside, Kingman: The Golden Circle is a very worthy and fun follow up to the first film. Taron Egerton really carries the film and shows why he’s destined to be a famous leading man. He and Firth truly steal the film together, though Pedro Pascal is no slouch either, as he gets quite a bit to do. The film is full of action, humor, and has a bit of heart, but the breakneck pacing of the film becomes an issue when many of the characters suffer for it. Still, it’s not a bad follow up in its own right, and it’ll pair nicely with Kingsman: The Secret Service as a fun companion film. Of course, the film also leaves on a note that this may not be the end of the Kingsman franchise. Here’s hoping that’s the case, because there’s definitely mileage left in this franchise, and it would be a pleasure to revisit these characters again. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is definitely some of the most fun you’ll have in a theater all year, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the fun.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Review

The 2015 Tony Award-winning, including Best New Play, sensation that is THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME has made its Orange County debut at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa! This touring production takes its cues from its Broadway and West End counterparts and delivers it to our doorstep. Curious Incident is a technical masterpiece that immerses its audience into another one’s mind combining masterful sound mixing and sagacious staging with an intricate story and powerful acting into a one-of-a-kind play. This inventive stage production shows the revelations of life through another’s sophisticated perspective and leaves us understanding that life isn’t so clear cut while remaining optimistic of our own future.

Based off the 2003 best-selling mystery novel by author Mark Haddon, Simon Stephens’ adaptation of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME takes theatergoers on a heart-pounding journey within the realm of a 15-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. Staying vague on the boy’s actual disorder, Curious Incident stays grounded; the story is more concerned with the life-lessons learned and how others cope with them.

Christopher Boone, our leading man played by Julliard graduate ADAM LANGDON (Benjamin Wheelwright on select performances), must battle through life’s challenges without the social skills necessary to interpret certain situations. Known for disliking metaphors since he considers them technically lies in his book, figuratively and literally, Christopher goes on his own hunt for answers as he plays detective to identify the murderer of his neighbor’s dog, Wellington. Along his hunt, Christopher is introduced to new troubling discoveries that only make his decision making even more challenging.

Dealing with severe relationship issues with his own parents, Christopher is seen persevering through his Aspergers-like challenges, all while taking matters into his own hands. Through each step along the way, the set design is presented as though we are viewing the inner-workings of the child’s mind. A creatively intricate production and set design is masked by a seemingly simplistic set at first glance. Through the power of lighting, sound, high-tech projections, and imaginative lit cubes, they all cumulate together allowing for an original theatergoing experience like no other!

It’s important to remember that this is solely a play, not a musical. With that in mind, the lack of singing allows for us to suspend our disbelief further and enter into Christopher’s world with a little less hesitation. Loud jolting noises and lighting cues help mimic Christopher’s reactions in our own head in relation to his nervous breakdowns and other challenges faced being on the autism spectrum. This is of course all interpretive, but does the trick very well.

Curious Incident can be troubling. It is loud, it is uncomfortable… at times. However, this is all done with good reason. Insanely powerful performances by the leading actors, including a standout performance by Langdon as Christopher, creates an attachment to these characters even if your families aren’t similar. The play dives into the gray areas of family relationships and delivers an understanding that no one is perfect.

Lying is not an option for Christopher, but there will be times he will be lied to for his own protection, even if it’s wrong. These daily conundrums can be quite relatable, but in the end, Curious Incident teaches us that we must find understanding of one another. Ultimately, it is a thought provoking play that doesn’t just leave you with one underlying theme. Instead, it welcomes a new outlook on life.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts through Sunday 9/17.

The Disney Diaries: 5 Years of Cars Land

“Welcome to Radiator Springs!”

This year marks 5 years of racing, cone puns, and neon lights. Cars Land has now reached a big milestone, one that seems like it came faster than Lightning McQueen around Willy’s Butte. With those years have come an impressive number of crowds and well earned mileage for the area. With Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge being the latest themed land to be in the spotlight, it’s hard to forget the fanfare and explosion of excitement when Cars Land was first announced.

"The cutest little town in Carburetor County!"
“The cutest little town in Carburetor County!”

Debuting in June of 2012, the Disneyland Resort brought something monumentally special. With careful tooling, Cars Land not only recreated the town of Radiator Springs masterfully, but created a unique environment that everyone can enjoy. Even if you haven’t seen any of the films, the land fits perfectly and stands on its own. It truly is a place unlike any other, and one that still turns heads each day from sun up to sun down.

This place is remarkable, especially given the fact that Cars Land and I have a very special attachment. When I worked for the Disneyland Resort, I was stationed at the Casa Della Tires and worked the late Luigi’s Flying Tires attraction. So much has changed in that tire yard, but the memories are still as fresh today as the days they were formed. Since my departure, the land has continued to mature and foster a timeless feel that can only be summed up as amazing.

The moment you walk through the entrance, you are transported and become completely immersed a part of the world of Cars. Walt’s showmanship and attention to detail were definitely kept in mind with this addition, which is very important in this modern age of quick demands and changes. Park guests are evolving, and it takes more than a quick paint job to make a lasting impact.

Not a single detail was overlooked, from the delayed flashing of the town stoplight, to the nightly “Lighting Ceremony” that illuminates the entire town in neon lights. That ceremony is picture perfect and one of the rare opportunities to be a part of the story of the town. One of my favorite pastimes is visiting the town for the ceremony and looking for all the reactions and looks from the guests nearby. It still comes as complete surprise all these years later. It’s wonderful to see how people respond to witnessing it.

Pure Neon Beauty.

Now that we are driving into the 5th year, many more exciting things are finding their way to Radiator Springs. With the release of Cars 3, Cruz Ramirez has made her way to the park and fans of all ages are able to meet the newest member of the town. Also, the entire land is getting a Halloween overlay this year. Finally, Disney California Adventure gets to share in the holiday fun and Cars Land will be one of the most prominent themed areas for the fall season. With Halloweentime officially starting this weekend, our team here at SoCal Thrills will be giving you the full scoop. It’s truly an exciting time!

Whether it’s your first visit, your ten thousandth road trip, or your daily routine, really take your time to experience all the land has to offer. There is plenty of amazing food to go around, unique merchandise, sights to see, and attractions to take for a spin.

5 years has just sped by and I honestly can’t wait to see how the land will continue grow as we lean into that final curve taking us to the 10th anniversary. See you out on the track and on Route 66!

Apple Watch Series 3 brings built-in cellular and other new enhancements

Apple introduced Apple Watch Series 3, adding built-in cellular to the world’s number one watch. Whether users are out for a run, at the pool or just trying to be more active throughout their day, Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular allows them to stay connected, make calls, receive texts and more, even without iPhone nearby. The third-generation Apple Watch is an amazing health and fitness companion with intelligent coaching features, water resistance 50 meters1 and a new barometric altimeter that measures relative elevation. Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two models, one with GPS and cellular, and one with GPS, both featuring a 70 percent faster dual-core processor and new wireless chip.

https://youtu.be/jUvD80mNKBM

“We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Apple Watch Series 3 combined with the power of watchOS 4 is the ultimate device for a healthy life.”

Soon, the combination of cellular and watchOS 4 will allow Apple Music users to stream 40 million songs right from their wrist. Beginning Friday, September 15, Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) will be available to order in 10 countries and territories, and Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) will be available to order in 28 countries and territories. Both models are available in stores starting Friday, September 22.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) features a full LTE and UMTS cellular radio that switches seamlessly to cellular when it is away from iPhone. The watch shares the same number as iPhone so there’s no need to provide an additional number to family, friends or colleagues; and to help get customers started, participating carriers are also offering special introductory cellular plans at launch. Customers have the ability to make cellular calls directly with Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) and, when paired with AirPods, enjoy a seamless and fully wireless experience. Apple also pioneered an industry-first antenna design that uses the display itself as both a transmitting and receiving element for LTE and UMTS, while introducing a built-in eSIM that is over one-hundredth the size of a traditional SIM card, making over-the-air activation possible without compromising space.2

Powering Apple Watch Series 3 is the S3, Apple’s third-generation architecture featuring a faster dual-core processor, which allows for quicker app launch times and smoother graphics, and, for the first time, enables Siri to speak using the built-in speaker. Apple designed a new custom wireless chip called W2, making Wi-Fi 85 percent faster and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 50 percent more power efficient, while still providing all-day battery life and keeping the size virtually the same as before. Apple Watch Series 3 also features a barometric altimeter that assists with tracking activity, flights climbed and outdoor workouts, including elevation gain.

watchOS 4

watchOS 4 features an updated Heart Rate app, giving even more insight to heart rate, including measurements during resting, workout, recovery, walking and Breathe sessions. Customers can also choose to receive a notification when their heart rate is elevated above a specific threshold while inactive. Other great watchOS 4 features include the proactive Siri watch face that displays the information users need most throughout the day, an enhanced Workout app with new interface, custom High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout type and auto-sets for pool swims. With GymKit, users will soon enjoy the ability to connect to their favorite cardio equipment and experience two-way synchronization of data with just a tap, resulting in the most accurate information possible.

The redesigned Music app experience automatically syncs playlists like New Music Mix and Favorites Mix, along with the user’s most listened to music. Later this fall, Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) will stream music, giving users access to any song from Apple Music, straight from the wrist. Apple TV 4K brings home the magic of cinema

Apple introduced the new Apple TV 4K designed to deliver a stunning cinematic experience at home. With support for both 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR), Apple TV 4K features unbelievably sharp, crisp images, richer, more true-to-life colors, and far greater detail in both dark and bright scenes. With Apple TV 4K, viewers can enjoy a growing selection of 4K HDR movies on iTunes. iTunes users will get automatic upgrades of HD titles in their existing iTunes library to 4K HDR versions when they become available. Apple TV 4K will also offer 4K HDR content from popular video services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, coming soon.

“Bring the magic of the cinema straight to your living room with the new Apple TV 4K,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Customers will love watching stunning 4K HDR movies from an impressive catalog on iTunes, while also getting automatic upgrades of 4K HDR movies already in their iTunes library and enjoying 4K content on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, coming soon.”

4K and HDR

Built on the groundbreaking A10X Fusion chip — the same chip that powers iPad Pro — the new Apple TV 4K delivers a vivid 4K HDR experience.
  • Support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10 ensures users can enjoy incredible-looking TV shows and movies on any HDR TV.
  • Built-in high-performance 4K video scaler makes HD content look better than ever on a 4K TV.
  • Always outputting to the highest resolution possible allows viewers to get the most out of their TV, whether it’s an older HDTV or the latest 4K Dolby Vision OLED.
  • Automatic detection of a 4K TV’s capabilities optimizes setup for the best quality picture.

Siri and the Apple TV App

Siri and the Apple TV app are easy ways to find and play exactly what you want. The TV app brings all your favorite shows and movies together, and Siri makes it possible to search and access content across Apple TV using just your voice.
  • The TV app supports over 60 services on Apple TV and iOS devices, with more being added all the time. Whether you’re at home or on the go, it’s easy to discover and watch TV shows and movies from multiple apps in one place.
  • Siri is smart about 4K HDR, so it’s unbelievably simple to find movies and TV shows in the highest picture quality across your apps (e.g., “Show me movies in 4K”).
  • Later this year, the TV app is making it easier than ever to watch and get updates about live sports just by saying “Watch the Warriors game” or “What’s the score of the Cubs game?”
  • Sports fans in the US will be able to track their favorite teams and get on-screen notifications whenever they are playing, as well as see all the teams, leagues and sporting events currently playing through a dedicated Sports tab.2
  • Starting this month, the TV app will be available in Australia and Canada, in addition to the US. And, by the end of the year, it will expand to France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the UK.

Apple TV at Home

Apple TV is the perfect addition to any household, with great apps from the App Store on Apple TV, as well as photos, videos, music and more. If you already own an iPhone or iPad, there’s no better choice in the living room than Apple TV.
  • Users can share recent photos and videos from your iPhone and iPad, including the best Memories, with friends and family on the biggest screen, with iCloud on Apple TV.
  • It’s also simple to send movies, TV shows, home videos and photos from iPhone or iPad instantly to the TV using AirPlay from your iOS devices.
  • With support for AirPlay 2, coming later this year, Apple TV can control multiple AirPlay 2-compatible speakers as well as your home theater speakers to create the ultimate home music experience.
  • Apple TV goes beyond entertainment to help deliver on Apple’s vision of the smart home. Since Apple TV is always at home, it’s perfectly suited to act as a home hub for all of your HomeKit accessories, enabling remote access as well as automated control (e.g., automatically turning on the lights at sunset).
