Fresh Look: Hilton Anaheim Unveils Full-Property Renovation

Hilton

Hilton Anaheim held a private event on Thursday October 23, to commemorate the completion of the resort’s multi-phase, multi-million-dollar renovation. All 1,574 rooms and suites were redesigned with modern furnishings, upgraded lightning, and more. We had the opportunity to stay at the Hotel and attend the hosted private event.

“Completing this renovation, the most significant transformation in our history, is a major milestone for our hotel and our entire team,” said Sergio Bocci, general manager, Hilton Anaheim. “For over a year, we navigated construction, while keeping our commitment to serving guests, reimagining every space for the future, and honoring the legacy of what this property means to Anaheim. This transformation has allowed us to celebrate the property’s role in Anaheim over the past 40 years while creating a hotel ready to welcome guests, neighbors, and partners to gather for years to come.”

We were fortunate enough to be able to stay at the hotel and our room was fantastic. The park view room overlooks directly above the new Rooftide Terrace and pool area with Disneyland Resort overtaking the skyline. A comfortable private serene fireworks view away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded noisy walkways below.  The decor throughout the property including the hotel rooms take inspiration from the state of California, including hanging artwork of oranges. In fact, management plans to plant an orange tree on property as a symbolic connection to the city’s past with orange grooves.

The food and beverage program also went through an overhaul. Poppy’s Restaurant features new cuisine offerings in a brighter modern dining space. Just across is Hansen’s Market for grab and go snack items including fresh coffee and in-house bakery pastries. Poppy’s Lounge features more open space seating and circular bar set up for cocktails and appetizers.

Rooftide Terrace on the hotel’s fifth floor features outdoor lounge space, pool, hot tub, pool lifts for accessibility, children’s water play area, firepits, and lawn games. Guests will find Saltflower an open air poolside restaurant and bar featuring tastes of California.

Many areas of Hilton Anaheim is designed for small and large event gatherings. Even the wide open and inviting space of Rooftide Terrace and Saltflower is flexible for special occasions. The possibilities are truly endless.

Private Event Gallery

The hotel’s meeting and event space was updated and the lobby was reimagined. A pair of 9,000 acre outdoor event space has also seen a face-lift transforming a flat concrete layout into a grassy terrain with exterior overhang lighting. Event planners can even rent out hotel rooms adjacent to the outdoor space adding more flexibility to cilent taste and needs. Indoor ballrooms have moving walls to convert a wide open space into four smaller sections. New chandelier and matching chairs with freedom of lighting choices for whatever an event calls upon. The rings over the redesigned lobby bar reflecting the anticipated arrival of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“From the lobby to our guest rooms, from rooftop pool experiences to our signature dining venues, every element has been thoughtfully designed to deliver a world-class experience,” Bocci added. “We’re proud to reaffirm Hilton Anaheim as a leading destination for travelers seeking both comfort and connection in the heart of Orange County.”

Event Space Gallery

This is the property’s first full-scale renovation since its opening in 1984. This has been long overdue and a very welcome change. It’s practically a whole new premiere hotel experience for the Anaheim Resort area. Only steps away from major destinations such as the Disneyland Resort and the Anaheim Convention Center. An upscale California Adventure will imprint a lasting impression that can begin and end with Hilton Anaheim.

Poppy’s: A Culinary Gem Shines Brightly in the Heart of Anaheim

Poppy's

Anaheim, a city synonymous with magical escapes and family-friendly fun, has a new destination for discerning palates. As part of a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Hilton Anaheim—a sprawling and impressive hotel that serves as an excellent home base for those visiting Disneyland Resort—has unveiled Poppy’s, its new signature restaurant.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a media dinner to sample their offerings, and I can confidently say that Poppy’s is a culinary landmark worth celebrating.

IMG

The moment you step inside, you sense that this is more than just a hotel restaurant. Developed by Hilton’s in-house StiR Creative Collective, Poppy’s embodies the vibrant, fresh spirit of California. The menu, under the masterful direction of veteran chef Prabeen Prathapan, is a testament to the state’s abundant produce and commitment to mindful, sustainable dining. Chef Prathapan’s vision is clear: to capture the “colors and flavors of California” and serve them with “friendly and refined hospitality.” From our experience, he has succeeded on all counts.

Our evening began with a selection of expertly crafted cocktails and mocktails. The beverage program is a thoughtful extension of the California-inspired menu. I particularly enjoyed the Solstice Squeeze, a drink that perfectly balanced its components, made with del maguey vida mezcal, chinola passionfruit, ancho reyes amaretto, lime, orange bitters and tajin rim. The mocktails were just as inventive, a welcome sign that the bar takes every guest’s experience seriously.

The menu itself is a journey through California’s culinary landscape. We sampled an array of dishes, and while the entire meal was a delight, the main event was the Tomahawk steak. This was, without question, a standout. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, the steak was succulent and deeply flavorful, a true carnivore’s dream. The high-quality cut speaks to Poppy’s commitment to artisanal, hearty fare for its dinner service.

We also got a taste of the lighter, starter menu selections. The Kingfish Yellowtail Crudo was crisp and refreshing, a perfect example of a lighter dish executed with precision. This elevated the fresh Yellowtail, proving that simple ingredients can produce complex flavors. We also enjoyed the Hot Honey Mustard Wings, the California Summer Salad and Prosciutto Flatbread. For those looking for a heartier option during lunch, the Route 66 Chicken Club sounds like a comforting and delicious choice.

Dinner transitions to a more substantial menu, with a focus on prime cuts of meat like the Imperial Wagyu Filet and Prime Bone-In Ribeye. But it’s not just about the steak. The commitment to fresh, local ingredients shines through in every bite, from the seafood to the fresh produce.

To end the evening, we were treated to the Warm Poppy Seed Cake as well as the Dark Chocolate Espresso Mousse. The Poppy Seed Cake dessert is an elegant and fitting tribute to the restaurant’s namesake. Paired with orange blossom lemon curd and vanilla bean ice cream, it was a subtle yet satisfying conclusion to a truly memorable meal.

Poppy’s is more than a new restaurant; it’s a statement. It’s the centerpiece of Hilton Anaheim’s reimagined food and beverage program, a place where locals and travelers can gather to enjoy high-quality, California-inspired cuisine. And for anyone planning a visit to the magical realm of Disneyland, staying at the Hilton Anaheim now offers an added perk: an unforgettable dining experience right on site. Poppy’s is a triumph, and a must-visit for anyone who appreciates great food.

Poppy’s is located inside Hilton Anaheim and is now open. Reservations can be made at OpenTable. For more info click here.

CARVED at Descanso Gardens is not-so-spooky Halloween fun for families

Carved

Descanso Gardens‘ popular Halloween event, CARVED, is back this year and better than ever. We took in every inch of the nearly mile long route through the gorgeous grounds on opening night and loved what we found.

As you’d expect, there are hundreds of jack-o-lanterns, but Chainsaw Jenna’s massive wood carvings are also here and make for fantastic photo ops. A hay bale maze had kids running themselves ragged, and there are even two stops for snacks along the route. The second one was much appreciated as we were ready for a churro after all that exploring.

Hay bale maze

Gorgeous theatrical lighting illuminates the natural beauty of the gardens, and lots of intricate (but not particularly scary or spooky) scenes can be found throughout, leading up to the “Rhizome” light installation by artists Tom & Lien Dekyvere.

Ghoulish installations celebrate the Halloween season at Carved © Kathryn Rapier

We found multiple fun Halloween items in the gift shop after to take home, so if you’re a fall girlie, budget accordingly. We were treated to a sampling of fall treats from the table service Farmhouse restaurant and immediately made reservations to return. Parents will love the specialty cocktails (we loved the Drunken Pumpkin, a spiced bourbon concoction, the most), and our little one happily gobbled up the butternut squash tartlets.

If you’re bringing a stroller, just be aware that it will get dirty and the terrain can be bumpy. The event was filled with happy kids, so maybe just have some wipes on hand for afterward. CARVED also goes on rain or shine, so check your weather app before you arrive.

CARVED is available nightly starting at 6PM through October 30. You can purchase timed entry tickets here, but be aware that weekend nights are already starting to fill up – don’t wait!

Theatre Review: San Francisco Ballet’s Frankenstein

Frankenstein

San Francisco Ballet and The Royal Ballet bring Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel to the stage like you’ve never seen or heard before. For a limited run October 2 – 5, 2025 at Segerstrom Hall in the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

The Creature has been brought to life in this interpretation through dance. Choreographed by the late Liam Scarlett, San Francisco Ballet brings Frankenstein to Orange County. Scarlett called this work “a story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death, and above all, love… a Gothic love story … with an emphasis on exploring what it means to be human.”

In this Southern California premiere, audiences will be captivated by the stunning choreography, costumes, special effects, pyrotechnics, and a haunting original score performed by Pacific Symphony, that intensifies the dark and dramatic atmosphere. Frankenstein is horrified and repulsed by what actually comes alive on the operating table. As if the Creature understands his precarious existence and the unsightly horror others see in him, he proceeds to seek vengeance on Frankenstein and those he loves. Depth of this production reaching beyond the story that has been retold in countless variations.

Frankenstein

A brilliant yet reckless scientist, Victor Frankenstein is consumed by the idea of creating life. His fixation alienates him from his loved ones and leads to devastating consequences. As his experiment spirals into unforeseen horror, Victor’s inner turmoil and descent into despair form the emotional core of the ballet.

Victor’s devoted fiancée, Elizabeth embodies love, innocence, and steadfastness. As she grows into a woman, she serves as Victor’s emotional anchor, attempting to pull him back from his self-destructive path. However, she ultimately becomes a victim of his dark ambition.

Brought to life by Victor’s unnatural experiment, the Creature is both tragic and terrifying. Initially filled with childlike curiosity, it longs for acceptance but is met with fear and rejection. Consumed by loneliness and rage, the Creature turns to revenge, forcing Victor to confront the cost of his actions.

Frankenstein

Victor’s companion, Henry Clerval, represents emotional warmth and reason. Victor’s father, Alphonse, embodies wisdom and concern. Victor’s loving mother, Caroline represents the ideals of family, providing a stark contrast to the cold, scientific world Victor later immerses himself in. Loss and obsession with conquering death and the natural order, plays a significant role in motivating Victor’s experiments.

Justine grows up alongside Victor and Elizabeth as the family servant and ultimately becomes the devoted governess of Victor’s younger brother, William. William becomes an early casualty of the Creature’s wrath marking a turning point, as Victor realizes the terrible reach of his experiment’s consequences. Justine’s tragic fate highlights themes of injustice and the far-reaching destruction caused by Victor’s secrecy.

San Francisco Ballet “Frankenstein” is a gripping masterpiece in visual storytelling through interpretive dance and stellar music. The silent display of emotional turmoil plays very well hand in hand like a live silent movie remarkably appropriate for a Gothic romance. From the orchestra seating level, the intricate dance movements are on full display and stunning synchronization. The riveting stage is engrossed in functional costumes and dramatic set design. Leave your expectation of Frankenstein in Hollywood movies, this ballet focuses more on the emotional core of life and death.

Frankenstein

Castles and grave robbing prove to be unnecessary. The Creature is depicted with more depth than ever before disregarding signs of mental abnormalities. The third act culminates in dance sequences of flashbacks, hallucinations, and heartbreak. The final dance engulfed in passionate pain, exhausting fear, and unwavering despair manifested through blossoming love, desperate compassion, and utter betrayal. The final image a jaw dropping impression against a moving background of painted flames. The heart and soul awestruck from the tragic love of human desire.

San Francisco Ballet, led by artistic director Tamara Rojo, is a world-leading ballet company and a trailblazing commissioner, collaborator, and presenter in dance. With a deep commitment to new and contemporary works and the classical repertoire. Founded in 1933, the company staged the first full-length American productions of Coppélia (1938) and Swan Lake (1940) and, in 1944, we launched an annual holiday tradition when we produced the first full-length production of The Nutcracker in the U.S. Artistic Director, Tamara Rojo.

Executive Director, Branislav Henselmann. Choreographer, Liam Scarlett. Composer, Lowell Liebermann. Staging, Lauren Strongin and Joseph Walsh. Scenic and Costume Design, John Macfarlane.

Review: Queen Mary Dark Harbor 2025

Queen Mary

The majestic ocean liner Queen Mary is summoned by the sea making port in Dark Harbor for the grandiose return of the Halloween staple in Long Beach, CA. The demolition of the Old English Village in April was less of a tragedy opening new potential for event space. The 2025 season canvas to really let the creative team work their magic with less restrictions. They really take advantage of every space available for a new stage, new slider alley, expanded cemetery entrance, and more.

The Village Graveyard has an expanded cemetery with tombstones, coffins, wagons, statues, waterfront, and other photogenic backgrounds. Take your time to soak in this atmospheric entrance as the exit will be elsewhere.

The Shipyard features a brand new set up for the main stage, slider alley, and oversized map of scare mazes, carnival rides, show times, bars, shopping, food, and extra experiences. A pirate themed shootout for an extra fee or included with VIP. Captain’s Club for VIP lounge sits on one side of the stage with private cabanas. On the other side of the stage with beaming light house is the Anchor Bar and The Crypt with cushioned bench sitting overlooking the crowds with the Queen Mary in the background. The Crypt is also designed as a private event space for special occasions. Just around the corner is the nearest scare maze, Breakout. You’re locked inside the maximum security prison with notorious criminal Samuel the Savage. Unruly justice, winding prison cells, and convicts abound.

Seaside Village has you covered with carnival fair foods from churros, milkshakes, ice cream, fish bowls, burgers, hot dogs, fries, turkey legs, kettle corn, pretzels, funnel cakes, tacos, nachos, corn dogs, pizza, kabobs, and mocktails. For the price, portion sizes appear quite descent. Sinister Swings from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch returns as a popular mainstay.

Entrance and Main Plaza Photo Gallery:

Voodoo Bayou conjures magic of roasting s’mores, smoking hookah, themed fries and nachos, cocktails, and the scare maze “Voodoo: The Queen’s Curse”. Navigate the swamp and escape the curse through zombie sailors, potion shops, coffins factories, and crackling lighting. A hidden speakeasy can be found here for those with sight to see the entrance. For knowledge and tokens to the speakeasy, guests will have to consult with Lady Mabel at the outskirts of Halloween Carnival. If you have VIP, you’re already granted access to the speakeasies.

Voodoo Bayou Photo Gallery:

Halloween Carnival is the gateway to roaming clowns, carnival rides, axe throwing, performance stage, cocktails served in oversized alien cups, and the scare maze “Big Top Terror”. This circus tent is full of deadly surprises and cursed tricks with mirror maze labyrinth inside a giant jack o’lantern, spinning tunnel, ball pit, and more. Apparently we missed the speakeasy in this one. Just means we’ll have to go back and try our luck again! Across from Lady Marbel is the scare maze “Lullaby”. Scary Mary is looking for a new playmate. A game of hide and seek through the ship’s lockers, changing rooms, nursery, and dark hallways just what she needs. The speakeasy here grants entry to the enormous void of the boiler. You’ll get a different perspective of guests walking over a collapsing bridge.

Halloween Carnival Photo Gallery:

Spirits of Dark Harbor is the central gathering inside the ship to learn more about the ship and its ghosts while sipping on cocktails or mocktails from the nearby bar. Additional cost experiences can be found with Trick or Treat immersive holographic VR and the exceptional seance. Join Lady Mabel to the summoning of the spirit of Samuel the Savage through darkness, billowing wind, unearthly sound effects, and splattering blood. The hidden speakeasy to the engine room can be found here. Bring a drink and loop around the confines of twisting metal pipes.

Spirits of Dark Harbor Photo Gallery:

Nearby is the scare maze “Feast”. It takes a strong arm to cut up and slice away delectable portions of fresh meat rising from Butcher to Chef. Guests may find themselves to be the missing special ingredient. Dare to take the challenge to crawl over spinning blades. The exit also features perhaps the most wheelchair accessible hidden speakeasy. Full tables and chairs to chill and relax with a cocktail while meeting the Chef.

Feast Photo Gallery:

“Infirmary” scare maze lead patients from the operating theater to deeper inside the bowels of the ship where the surgeon and his beautiful accomplice, Graceful Gale, conduct gruesome procedures. The hidden speakeasy here sends you down an elevator to the boilder room of the ship with its vast open chamber six fathoms below sea level. The deep darkness can certainly put one on edge. It is much appreciated to have clear visible signage within the ship’s mazes indicating where the designated paths continue. One wrong turn without supervision and a guest could easily get lost.

Infirmary Photo Gallery:

Merchandise, Food, Observation Deck Photo Gallery:

The Shipyard stage features not-to-be-missed Maidan Voyage Launch Party to “open the gates” to Queen Mary Dark Harbor, fire dancers, slider alley, and live DJ. There is even a Final Voyage with the main spectrals dancing with guests to  modern Latin music and reggaeton before a foam party across the way!

Every staff member from actors, foods, stores, operations, security, and more genuinely appear to be having fun and embrace the Halloween festivities. The staff and guests engage with each other between the scares, food, shows, and party time atmosphere. Not a single frown to be found. The most impressive hidden speakeasies to be found are those inside the ship. Guests are able to purchase exclusive cocktails and explore at their own pace. 2025 has been the best experience ever for Queen Mary Dark Harbor. We can’t wait to see what the creative team has cooking up for next year.

Review: LA Haunted Hayride 2025

Haunted Hayride

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride returns to Griffith Park unearthing the town of Midnight Falls with its perpetually undead citizens roaming the fairground. Elvira Mistress of the Dark makes official debut here for the 2025 season. Her presence includes a refresh of the Trick or Treat Maze, exclusive merchandise, voice over takeover of the Midnight Falls radio station, and a makeover of the Scary-Go-Round.

In addition, the upcoming release of horror movie “The Strangers: Chapter 2” has set up a photo booth and takes over the diner scene in the hayride itself. Both with live performers. Restrooms have been relocated to a more central, flat, and well-lit point of the fairground. A welcome upgrade from previous years of dark, cramped, and smelly corner. A new exit has emerged by the iconic pumpkin pyramid photo op. Extra charge experiences are back with axe throwing, Zombie Splat Gellyball Experience with live actors, Madame Aurora’s Seance Theatre, Mini Escape Games, and the Scary-Go-Round skeleton horses are dressed like Elvira’s dog, Gonk.

Midnight Falls Photo Gallery:

The namesake for the Halloween event has the Hayride return for the most part intact as previous years. The majority of the pumpkin monsters greet guests in the queue by the gas station. But even pass the merge point with between general admission and Fast Pass, it still took another 25 minutes before boarding. The number of operable tractors will affect efficiency. Speaking of which, operators would benefit counting bodies boarding to avoid overloading the trailers, telling people to move all the way down the bench without actually seeing if there is anywhere to go. The benches are back on the trailers which still provide a comfortable relief from lying down in hay.

The tour begins with the radio station tower falling. A great effect to start. But could have used lighting as the cause for the fall. With Elvira playing radio host, I was surprised/not surprised she has zero presence in the hayride. Not even a fake out with a costumed character. In the past, the radio DJ would build tension during blackouts thus introducing the next scene. I was hoping for the witness of Elvira’s voice. But nothing. A burning building, lakeside, alien crash site, greenhouse, and movie theater gets highlighted. Actors were thoughtfully staffed as well as animated figures and effects.

Of special note are the church scene and The Strangers at the diner. The church show scene actually had the tractor stop and able to see a character rise into the air. This felt like the hayride going back to proper form since a long time. Hope to see more of this in the future. Then the Strangers take over the old diner set. A nice synergy inclusion. But feels like a shameless promotion with posted characters on the windows and the movie title with release date coming off as more concerned as a promotion than a scare experience.

Hayride Photo Gallery:

Janelle Monae returns from last year for “Monae Manor”. A redressing of the manor that was there before hand. Unless you knew who you were looking for, most guests would have not noticed the singer’s Halloween passion on the digital screens. The music seems to reflect more of the artist.

Elvira Trick or Treat Mayhem is the latest collaboration for a scare maze. Having Elvira with her own maze attraction works well as guests briefly walk inside the house, television screens with the hostess, signature couch, movie theater, and one of the best parts, walking through Elvira’s chest via giant billboard and inflatable bags. There is a kitchen that features the monster in a pot from her movie. Would have been a great gag if the actor inside the kitchen taunted guests and opens the pot lid to reveal the monster moving around.

Should Hellbilly Halloween be next for a celebrity collaboration, who would you choose? A cannibalistic family in the backwoods of Midnight Falls invites guests for dinner. This scare maze features the most gore compared to the others.

Thankful to see some slight changes here and there to give each season a some reason to visit. It may not be enough for everyone, but for those that look at the details, it matters. The operational choice to only permit one entry per attraction may not be popular at the beginning of the season compared to a busier second half.

Scare Maze Photo Gallery:

To satisfy your hunger and grab something to eat before watching the live cover band or waiting in long queues, the Halloween event has you covered with kettle corn, cookies, burgers, hot dogs, skewers, baked potatoes, and fire pits to roast s’mores. New for the 2025 season is the hot apple cider and donut combo. This special delight is quite refreshing to put anyone in the autumn mood. An apple flavored treat actually makes a lot of sense for those overwhelmed with pumpkin flavors. A welcome debut for perhaps more tasty apple treats in the prospective future.

Food Photo Gallery:

The distinctive sight and sounds of Monte Revolta and his Band of the Living Dead always guarantee a great entertainment value to the price of admission. You really can’t go wrong with their musical tributes to horror movies. From “The Exorcist” to “Stephen King’s IT”, the devilish theatrics is a crowd pleaser in front of the stage and while waiting in line for the hayride.

As a special tribute to the film’s 50th anniversary, “JAWS” was presented complete with the Amity billboard, Monte Revolta in the mayor’s anchor print jacket, Chief Brody, Captain Quint, and the shark itself. It was unfortunate however for a Midnight Falls citizen to use a blowhorn during the tribute. Other citizens were more in character playing up the joy of listening to the live band.

Monte Revolta Photo Gallery:

The Midnight Falls General Store and pop-up store now features exclusive Elvira Merchandise. With products from Kreepsville Clothing, Elvira has already had products sold before in the past. But it’s a lot more prominent branding this year. From shirts, aprons, pins, tiki mugs, and more, there’s a little something for everyone.

Shopping Gallery:

LA Haunted Hayride seems to repeat itself taking one step forward, but two steps back. This year’s layout with entrance, additional exit, food booths, extra cost experiences, restrooms, stage, and mazes works very well. There’s a more laid back approach to the event. It’s not a party type atmosphere. A stepping stone for those new to attending scare events. Just enough thrills without being too overwhelming. Perhaps that’s due to the location being in a city park and restrictions on alcohol sales.

The apple cider debut is great direction for the rest of the food booths to take on more thematic roles. Make the food specific to Midnight Falls and not just a generic fair atmosphere seen across the country. Popcorn for the movie theater. Hot dogs for drive-in movie theater. Introduce creative flavors. Feature mocktails. There’s a lot of untapped potential that LA Haunted Hayride can’t quite cross over. Make the season pass ticket worth coming back.

Guest Services tent is now accessible from both in and out of the event space. A very practical layout. Too bad it closes with the event operations. Since the parking shuttles are scheduled to close 30 minutes after closing, guest services should do the same as patrons exit for the evening. There were many guests hunting to find an employee to speak with. I had comments to address myself regarding the operation.

But as soon as I was finished speaking, the employee’s response was to immediately just walk away leaving me with me with nothing. Don’t even bother with Emergency Services either. They were too busy scrolling on their phones to be bothered. Many, but not all, employees had a “I’m just here for a paycheck” attitude. A disappointing but regular expectation.

Does Elvira Mistress of the Dark officially partnering with LA Haunted Hayride make it worth the effort? Somewhat yes, but mostly no. More specifically, under utilized. The redressing of the Trick or Treat scare maze and Scary-Go-Round is the best part. The idea of Cassandra Peterson as the radio host is a great use of her distinctive voice while remaining retired from dressing up as her iconic character. In that case, her voice should be heard in more locations. Intro and outro of Monte Revolta. A decrepit vehicle with a working radio. The safety spiel to boarding and disembarking tractor trailers. Not even a closing announcement to wish guests “unpleasant dreams”.

Theatre Review: A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder

Love and Murder

Laguna Playhouse presents their opening season production of the 2014 Tony Award winning Best Musical, “A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder”. Climbing the social ladder of Edwardian England proves to be a comical endeavor paired with a dash of mischief. Within the confines of prison, Monty Navarro (Andrew Hey) writes his memoir of his determined rise to wealth. Following the passing of his mother, family friend Miss Shingle (Jean Kauffman) reveals that Monty is in fact the ninth in line to inherit the D’Ysquith family wealth.

Motivated by his devotion for the beautiful Sibella (Lauren Weinberg), who is set to marry another man, Monty puts into play a scheme to do away with each member of the D’Ysquith family (Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper) in order to obtain the status and wealth of his love’s affections. To his surprise, he falls head over heels in love for his distant cousin, Phoebe (Katy Tang). A woman so distinct from Sibella, he could not turn away. No one has uncovered Monty’s murderous trail until Inspector Pinckney (Michael Cavinder) comes into the picture.

For anyone that was fortunate enough to have seen “The Remarkable Mister Holmes: A Madcap Musical Comedy Murder Mystery” in spring 2025 at Laguna Playhouse, you’re in for another treat with “A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder”. While the former was a cross between Sherlock Holmes whodunnit meets the music of “My Fair Lady”, the later has the audience follow the murderer and understand their motivation. The deaths themselves are less horrific malice and more diabolically hands off. Monty sets up his murders that allow his victims to make the deaths look more like freak accidents.

“A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder” charms its way with amusing wit and fast paced musical numbers leaving you breathless with curiosity for the next untimely demise and balancing romance. The curtain remains unveiled following Monty’s every sinister act. Little mystery to solve except for the murderer to cover his own tracks. So no need to follow or disregard red herrings. The deaths play out as all in good fun as the family murder victims are played out by a single talented and skilled actor. Easy to digest flurry just as the fall season springs up for the Halloween season.

Review: Celebrating The Sound of Music’s 60th Anniversary in 4K Ultra HD

Sound of Music

The 60th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of The Sound of Music arrives as a genuine event for film lovers, offering a definitive presentation of one of the most beloved musicals ever produced. More than just a commemorative set, this lavish release demonstrates the benefits of modern restoration techniques and presents the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic in a form that is both faithful to its original roadshow grandeur and revelatory for a contemporary audience.

Restored and scanned from the original 65mm negative, this new transfer represents a substantial leap beyond prior editions. Across every frame, detail is extraordinarily precise: fabrics reveal delicate stitching, and sweeping Salzburg landscapes carry a crispness and dimensionality rarely seen outside the cinema.

SoundOfMusic FamilyOverAlps jpgThe HDR10 grading avoids excess gloss, instead favoring a naturally balanced palette that restores subtle contrasts often lost in earlier formats. Whites achieve brilliance without blooming, and the famed Technicolor hues of the production—whether in verdant hillsides or the muted stone textures of the abbey—resonate with new fidelity. The grain structure remains intact, preserving a distinctly filmic essence that underscores the authenticity of the restoration.

The newly remastered Dolby Atmos track brings renewed vigor to a score that has enchanted audiences for six decades. Orchestration rings with lush, full-bodied resonance, expanding into the room with an immediacy that rivals a live performance. Dialogue is well anchored and consistently clean, while vocal performances—from Andrews’ soaring delivery to the ensemble pieces—rise out of the mix with clarity and warmth. The immersive qualities of the Atmos design lend fresh spatial presence to iconic moments like the “Do-Re-Mi” montage and the concert hall finale, reaffirming the central role music plays within the film’s emotional architecture.

Special Features

Complementing the feature presentation is an array of supplemental material designed to both educate and celebrate.

  • New Anniversary Documentary: A feature-length exploration of the enduring cultural impact of The Sound of Music, with a particular focus on its reception across generations.
  • Restoration Featurette: A behind-the-scenes account of the technical challenges and artistic considerations that shaped this landmark restoration.
  • Legacy Commentary Track: Featuring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, supplemented by archival insights from director Robert Wise.
  • Salzburg Then and Now: A newly produced location tour revisiting iconic sites with historical context.
  • Musical Moments: A curated option allowing viewers to access each song directly.
  • Legacy features from prior Blu-ray editions—screen tests, documentaries, and archival footage—ensure that nothing of historical significance has been lost in translation.

The release arrives housed in a sturdy slipcase adorned with elegant anniversary artwork, accompanied by a handsome booklet featuring rare production stills and a reflective essay on the film’s enduring influence. Both Blu-ray and digital copies are included alongside the 4K UHD disc, underscoring this set’s versatility for modern audiences.

Few restorations manage to thread the needle between archival fidelity and contemporary polish as successfully as this 60th Anniversary edition of The Sound of Music. It enhances without embellishing, presenting the film in a way that both honors its cinematic heritage and showcases the potential of home theater. For collectors, musical devotees, and cinephiles alike, this release is as complete and as authoritative a presentation as one could hope for—a perfect celebration of six decades atop cinema’s highest peaks.
